Welcome from the Team It’s taken six of us enthusiastic souls to resurrect your own, brand new Sedgeberrow Post, with six copies a year. Hopefully we will ease the burden by spreading the load and maintain even greater longevity for your new newsletter. We also mustn't forget those stalwarts who brave the elements, pound our streets and give up their time to deliver your Post.

Your Village needs You Have you any experiences you wish to share, a skill that could please our villagers? Do please us all by submitting articles, recording your events and most importantly, hitting our deadlines.

Submitting material for publication If you are a local villager you will have a choice of a double A5 page spread, a single A5 page, a half page and a quarter page. We have some estimates of how many words you will need for each size. These are just approximations and will vary according to logos that you may also want to feature and the number of large headlines that you want. By working to these parameters when you are emailing your piece, you will help the editorial process immensely. Some of you will have a basic template that you can modify accordingly for each new issue. Email is best for us.

I’ve been collecting old writing/office desk memorabilia ever since the 1960s, when I rescued a wooden calendar from a traditional grocer in the Midlands that my Potteries global bakery firm were “modernising.”

So it was no surprise when a decade later I bought a wooden ink blotter, compatible with its period, from a junk shop on Cheltenham’s lower High St. The dealer’s story was that it came from the nearby Ladies College. I took that with a pinch of salt until I dismantled it to replace the blotting paper. I then discovered this hidden graffiti. An insight into the minds of youthful ladies of that era and what they must have seen as their own secret little world………...

Back Faster Broadband for the Village The Worcestershire Broadband plan aims to get superfast broadband to 90% of the county by 2015, and for all communities to have access to at least 2 Mbps download speeds. In Sedgeberrow, my own experience as a domestic user is pretty good. I get 2 Mbps download speeds and can usually watch football and use the BBC iplayer, but it does stick more than I would like. However, if you have to upload, there are problems, as the speed is very slow. This might affect domestic users, and it will certainly affect businesses who have to upload documents onto a website, or who send large attachments in emails.

You can help influence the speed with which superfast broadband is rolled out.

If you go to http://www.worcestershire.gov.uk/cms/superfast-broadband.aspx you can click on the 'Show Support for Fast Broadband for Worcestershire' link, and do just that! Solar Panels Feed in Tariff (FIT) Update 23rd March. The Supreme Court has thrown out the government's appeal against a previous ruling that deemed its controversial changes to solar feed-in tariff (FIT) incentives as unlawful. The decision brings to a close a long-running legal saga.

It confirms that solar installations completed between 12 December last year and 4 March this year will receive the original 43p/kWh rate, rather than the 21p/kWh rate proposed by the government.

So, if you were smart enough to get your panels installed and up and running by the 4th March, make sure that you are receiving the very attractive 43p/kWh rate.

Statement by Energy and Climate Change Secretary Edward Davey : “We are disappointed by the decision of the Supreme Court not to grant permission to hear this case. But the Court’s decision draws a line under the case.

We will now focus all our efforts on ensuring the future stability and cost effectiveness of solar and other micro generation technologies for the many, not the few.”

Editors note: This is an important court ruling if you are planning a renewable energy installation. It provides the certainty that a Government cannot make retrospective cuts to future schemes that are installed at an agreed tariff.

Door to Door Sellers West Mercia police are warning residents to be mindful of people selling door to door in the Bredon Hill area.

Over recent weeks police have received reports of people selling overpriced household cleaning products and items out of black holdalls in the villages of Ashton Under Hill, Sedgeberrow, Kemerton and Eckington.

In an attempt to reduce the number of residents being mis-sold items, a door sticker has been designed and distributed by West Mercia Police. This can be used to remind vulnerable residents not to open the door if they are not expecting anyone or do not recognise the person, and to let callers know that they are not welcome without an appointment. News from Sedgeberrow CE First School 01386 881391

Our Eco-committee have been very busy this term. They evaluated the school environmental review and produced a detailed action plan for achievement before Easter. We have all been working on reducing our electricity usage by making sure doors are shut and lights turned off where possible. The graph on the eco-board shows that these measures are proving successful. The committee are also trying to reduce our water usage by installing ‘hippos’ in the toilets and monitoring taps around school which are left on unnecessarily. They have requested replacement push taps in the mobile classrooms to save water. This has been agreed so the committee has written to our handyman to ask if he will undertake this work for us.

An Eco-week is being planned before Easter which will have a focus on Design Technology. Each class will make something different like bird boxes and animal habitats to be put around the school to encourage a greater range of wildlife to visit us.

The creatures seen in each area in our grounds will be recorded to establish whether we can make a difference. Another ongoing project is turning the pond into a wildlife area.

Year 5 began the work using their forest school expertise and now each class in turn spends an hour on a Friday afternoon tidying the maintaining the area so it doesn’t get overgrown. On the same afternoon they work in groups with our volunteer gardeners developing our new school gardening area. Lots of other environmental work has been going on too. Year Two’s topic this half term is The Great Outdoors. They started off with a Science week looking at different plants and animals that live around our school.

They went on an animal hunt and found out that some animals live in all of the areas in school where as others live in just one of the areas.

For example they found lady birds in a lot of different places but only saw a frog in the pond area. Year Two were very lucky to have found a newt in the forest area which Ronan found underneath a log. We hope to be able to gain ‘Green Flag’ status for the school later this year.

Sedgeberrow Songsters Winners of Wychavon’s W-Factor Talent contest Held at No 8 Pershore Immy Ackland

Well done to two clearly talented singers. Rose at 15 has won the singing aged 14-18 category and Immy at 14 has won the under-14s category. Rose plays the saxophone and clarinet as well as singing and is a member of a student jazz band (For hire, see www.secondlinejazz.co.uk). Immy’s achievement is quite remarkable at her age as she has only been playing the guitar for just about five months. She paid tribute to her time at Sedgeberrow School where she was inspired by Fiona Smith, her teacher when she was a pupil there. Both girls will be taking part in some local festivals, organised by Wychavon this summer, as a result of their success in the competition.

The Annual Parish Assembly was held on 1st March and was attended by six parishioners (where were the other 650 of you?!). Main concerns were dog fouling, speeding in the village, cases of threatening behaviour by callers, overgrown hedgerows and Himalayan Balsam growing along the banks of the River Isbourne.Failure to remove dog faeces on a footpath, public pavement or verge within a 30 or 40mph limit is covered by Wychavon’s Dog Control Orders and carries a penalty of a fine up to £1,000. If you witness any offences taking place, please notify Wychavon’s Environmental Health Dept on 565015. All complaints are treated in confidence.

Inappropriate speeding of motor vehicles in the village, particularly on the sharp bends, and threatening behaviour by callers, have been reported to the Police.

There is also a problem with vehicles parking on the zig-zag markings outside school, resulting in the school bus being unable to pull in.

Himalayan Balsam is a tall annual herb with explosive seed heads and mature plants have pink-purple flowers and fleshy stems. It spreads by its seeds and is very aggressive and out-competes other native plants. It is listed under Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and as such it is an offence to plant or allow it to grow. Where it grows along river- banks it can impede flow at times of high rainfall and increase the likelihood of flooding. In order to remove it, the Environment Agency suggests that it should be sprayed during May. At the last Parish Council Meeting, CSO Simon Williams reported that between 1st March 2011 and 1st March 2012 there had been 22 reported crimes in the village. These were: 1 burglary of a dwelling (detected), 2 burglaries of non-dwellings, 1 assault, 7 thefts (1 detected), 3 criminal damage, 4 vehicle damage, and 4 others. This compared with 23 reported crimes for the same period last year.

Worcestershire County Council is conducting a consultation on the temporary traffic management options when the river crossing is closed to traffic for a 10week period in the summer of 2013, during the construction of the new Evesham Abbey Bridge and Viaduct. Leaflets that explain the options and include a response form can be obtained from Evesham Library or the Wychavon Shop.

Comments and suggestions should be returned to that Council by 20th April 2012.

A new timetable for the 540 Bus Service came into force on 19th February. Sedgeberrow Women’s Institute

By the time that you read this report Easter will be upon us - but just before that - - - - -.

In February we had a very entertaining and educational talk by Gordon Forrest of the Worcestershire Wild Life Trust. He brought some wonderful slides including one of an elusive Green Woodpecker.

At the beginning of March we held our second Book Club meeting and we are hoping to visit the Cheltenham Literary Festival later in the year. No coffee morning in March as we had rather a busy programme - - - - - - - .

A group meeting, Ladies Day at Cheltenham Races, a Visit to Cheltenham Ladies College followed by tea, a Talk by Andy Pedrick on Gardening, a visit to the Arts Centre. There was also a skittles match against Greet which we won I am happy to say. Congratulations to the ladies concerned!!

April so far promises to be fairly quiet , but you never know.

The coffee morning will be on Monday 23rd April and our speaker that month will be Pam Atanga. Her talk will be about 'Afro Creations' In May we shall hear about the work of St.Richard's Hospice followed by a visit later in the year.

Have a Happy Easter and I look forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting. New and old friends are always welcome, so come and join us.

PS. There will be a 'Cake Decoration' competition at The Summer Fete celebrating the Diamond Jubilee. Judging will be on the decoration only.

Auris Hybrid Car – Derek McMullan … a what?! An Auris Hybrid That’s how the conversation started. I thought it time to change the car and the 3 litre Jaguar gas-guzzler we had enjoyed for the last 10 years was shortly to go and be replaced by a Toyota Auris Hybrid; as my wife asked “a what?!”.

The Auris car uses the Prius hybrid-drive system in a car that is more aligned to “small family car” than the Prius’s “eco-car” credentials. I’ve looked at the Prius, even to the extent of taking a test drive, but the car never quite appealed enough to make the jump from my luxury saloon. The Auris has cleverly re-packaged the Prius drivetrain into a far more acceptable everyday car.

So what is this hybrid drivetrain? The car uses a 1.8 litre engine and also carries electric motor/generators (one on each front wheel) which do whatever seems most useful at the time! Running downhill; they will generate some electricity for future movement. Need some hill-climbing or overtaking power; they will help the engine to get a move on! All this complexity is managed by a clever electronic controller which decides which power source is best applied to the task in hand.

The upshot is that the driver is almost completely unaware of when the engine runs and when it does not!

Coming from the background of the Jaguar “business man’s express” it won’t surprise you that we have bought a high-specification version of the Hybrid with a few more creature comforts. For me a car has to be relaxed and quiet and, yes, I still like to have a bit of power to get a move on when needed. The hybrid isn’t cheap; there is an added cost of £1,300 - £1,500 for the hybrid version.

Going for the higher spec compromised the fuel consumption promised as we had larger wheels than the “cooking” version; so only 69 mpg was the target set by the official fuel consumption figures. The earlier Prius car was slated by the Press as Toyota’s quoted consumption was rarely realised by owners.

The key question; does it realise the fuel consumption figures quoted? Well I have to be honest and say I haven’t achieved more than 68.5 mpg so far – that was on a trip down to London so it included a lot of Motorway miles and some bumper-tobumper queuing into central London. I’ve never before crawled along in traffic and seen the average mpg go up! The car switches to battery power and as the engine isn’t running the choked sections of road become “free miles”. Using the car locally we still manage to achieve excellent fuel economy. Derek McMullan

WALKING AROUND SEDGEBERROW As the days lengthen and the possibility of warmer and brighter weather increases, hopefully there will be many opportunities to explore and enjoy our beautiful local countryside using our rural paths. The Wychavon Way which you can see signposted through the village is due to be officially opened soon, accompanied by the publication of a guidebook.

Happily the route is already available to use, and if you follow the distinctive signs you can walk into Broadway, or perhaps all the way to Droitwich in the opposite direction!

For the more manageable Broadway walk of about 5 miles, parking a car at the other end might be a good idea, especially if it is to be a family ramble .... ending with ice-creams all round of course.

Our 8th annual programme of walks, aimed at introducing the network of paths to villagers, starts with what has become a traditional midsummer stroll on the evening of Thursday 21st June. We will be meeting at the village hall at 7.30pm, and follow a route around the locality covering about three miles, aiming to be back in Sedgeberrow by 9.30pm. Everyone is very welcome to come along.

There will also be a walk in both July and August, and further details of these and the June midsummer walk will be given in the next edition of “The Sedgeberrow Post”.

Recently I have been approached about the state of our roadside paths (pavements), including concerns about broken tarmac and farm debris.

However these footpaths are not my responsibility, and any complaints should be taken up with the Worcestershire Highways department, either on-line or on telephone number 0845 6072005.

A growing reputation...............

The highlight for the flood group since the last post update has been a visit from two delegates representing “Tokyo Kensetsu Consultants” and “Japan Water Forum” on Wednesday 8th February.

It all started with them seeing a UK government document called “Preparing for emergencies - what you need to know”, a case study from Sedgeberrow Flood Group laying out why and how we started and what we do. This led to an exchange of emails, answers to various questions and a request to meet the flood group whilst they were visiting the UK. My thanks to Sue Morris, who hosted the visit, Dave May for his input and support and Annette Dawson for her technical presentation pack The visit had a very relaxed feel with plenty of opportunities to respond to a long list of questions followed by a walk along Winchcombe Road to the road bridge explaining as we went what had taken place to this part of the village in 2007, and with some amazement that the River Isbourne could wreak such havoc. Plenty of photographs were taken as we went to the footbridge further down river.

As I saw them off at the Railway station they gave a present from Japan for the group to share. I have since heard they have arrived back in Tokyo safely and have prepared a presentation for their organizations.

I felt the day had been a great success and am pleasantly surprised that our efforts have attracted such International attention.

Working World A Training Centre for people with a learning disability Helen Hurdman was a lecturer at Evesham College of Further Education for 16 years. She worked primarily with students with learning disabilities, pioneering and leading many programmes also for people with mental health problems and students with an acquired brain injury. She also taught year 10 and 11 transition pupils from local high schools.

Helen had become increasingly concerned each year as students were leaving the college with little else available for them to do in the local community.

In 2008 her concern about the lack of opportunity for these students and future funding issues led her to leave the security of her College job and set up Working World. It is run as a non-profit making organization that offers clients with learning disabilities realistic training experiences that can be transferred into the home environment. Helen is the Project Manager After finding premises at Evesham Adventure Playground Helen soon found dedicated, experienced and qualified staff, helped by volunteers passionate about the project. At the end of 2011 they now have 29 clients on their books.

They have good relations with Rooftop Housing Group, where the clients prepare lunches and provide coffee mornings at four of their schemes. In the summer of 2011 Rooftop Community Fund kindly awarded Working World £5,000 for a new portacabin. Lunches and hospitality are also provided once a month for an Evesham Volunteer Centre group. Activities carried out at Working World include packing confectionary for a local businessman. administrative duties for PATOSS (The Professional Association of Teachings of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties) Working World offer an ironing service, gardening and cleaning services. Clients cook their own meals on a regular basis. They work on menu planning, budgeting, purchasing the ingredients and meal preparation, a skill also transferrable to their own home situation.

Other significant events have been to receiving visit from HRH The Duchess of Gloucester and group weeks away in France. They enjoy trips to London, plus disco nights, social groups, meals out, bowling nights and joined the fundraising drive

by Working World clients, family, friends and supporters to raise funds for an LDV 17 seater minibus that could take clients to work and training experiences.

Working World Café Opening. A café based at Evesham Adventure Playground, just behind Morrisons, is planned for the beginning of April. It is an amazing opportunity for the clients training as well as offering a meeting place for people in the local community.

Excitement Looms for Sedgeberrow Resident Local distinguished resident Peter Looms expanded his family recently and has taken delivery of three chickens. You may not be aware of this as he only speaks about it most of the daylight hours. He has even learned to speak chicken-ease. His wife Suzette tells me he spends much time at the chicken coop mumbling to himself and the new arrivals, mind you he did that before the hen house arrived, but hey ho! I wouldn’t say he is obsessed but they are treated to breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.

Unbeknown though to Suzette he is expecting delivery any day of a further 1544 residents (it was to be 1545 but he ran over one at the suppliers) apparently chicken with Land Rover tyre tracks and broken bones is still OK to eat. He is awaiting planning permission for the installation of 500 additional hen houses so gardening this summer is out.

UPDATE : We are now in the process of clearing the land (it is a mass of tangled brambles and rubbish gathered over the years) and are beginning to plan the uses for our first allotment and community garden patch in Churchill Road, Sedgeberrow.

It is hard work, but incredibly exciting, knowing that we are soon going to be growing our own fruit and veg.

A RIGHT ROYAL BIT OF A DO This year the Village Fete on Glebe Meadow is being combined with the Jubilee Celebrations

Sunday 3rd June @ 2.00pm till 5.00pm Sedgeberrow Play Group, as The Royal Band, will lead a procession from the Village Hall to Glebe Meadow at 1.30pm to officially open the fete at 2.00.pm. Anyone wishing to join in with the procession may do so whether as part of a group or as individuals.

News from your local County Council representative Councillor Liz Eyre. The Parish Council has a full report from Liz every month.

“Ageing Well” Strategy seeks views. Residents across Worcestershire are being urged to speak up about the future of health care and support services for people aged 50 and over. A new draft strategy has been developed by a partnership of statutory, voluntary and private sector organisations alongside public representatives – led by the Older Peoples Consultative Group. The strategy aims to offer help to all people aged 50 years plus to meet their personal care and support needs in the most effective way. A three month public consultation on the new strategy is now on. Questionnaires have been placed in GP surgeries, libraries and other public venues throughout the county. See Worcestershire County Council website Budget Reductions: Budget consultation January, involving parishes & school governors, informed by extensive consultation with public passed through Council on 16th February.

Highways: Anyone in Wychavon who spots a pothole on the roads is being urged to report it to Worcestershire County Council. Residents can use the County Council's online reporting system to alert the authority to any defects.

Metal theft: metal thieves stealing manhole and gully covers have cost taxpayers in Worcestershire more than £100,000 in the past 12 months. A bill to make buying scrap metal for cash illegal and to increase fines for those breaking the law has been proposed.

Buses: Bus travel could be made cheaper and easier for passengers marking complicated journeys. A new system is set to be put in place that will allow passengers making journeys on different buses to pay for just one ticket that will take them to their desired destination.

Wychavon New Homes Bonus The Bonus aims to ensure that the economic benefits of housing growth are returned to the councils and communities where that growth takes place. For every new home built and occupied, we will receive six years of New Homes Bonus grant from the Government. (See Wychavon website) Youth provision: The County has a rolling out process for positive activity funding to support young people in youth activities out of school hours.

Vale Landscape Heritage Trust Charity No 1080109

Vale Landscape Heritage Trust was set up in 1999 to conserve the diminishing pieces of land around the Vale that have escaped “progress”, for future generations to enjoy.

To date, approximately 200 acres of orchard, woodland and meadows have been acquired, all of which have their own special characteristics from uncommon plants and insects to declining breeding and passage birds.

The Trust is managed by seven local trustees, and an ever growing volunteer group who meet every Wednesday, 10am-1pm, (weather permitting!) to do various tasks such as tree planting, plum picking and scrub clearing.

Hallo Everyone, Muppet here.

First the good news – we’ve stopped biting our ‘two-legs’ toes to wake her up in the morning – yep, we can jump on the bed and give her great big kisses and bite her ears instead!

Being a puppy is not easy you know, for example, sometimes the ‘twolegs’ will say “what’ve they got now?” and when we tell her in clear dog, you know, “bark bark woof woof” she looks at whatever it is, calls it a “leave it!” and takes it away – so many things called “leave it!” no wonder we get confused.

My brother Doofuss is ever so generous (though not always with me) and gives his toys (strangely also known as a “leave it”) to the two-legs, she throws it away and we both chase after it and he takes it back to her – I don’t, I hide MY “leave its” in the garden!

The ‘two legs’ that looks like my granddad (it’s the grey muzzle that does it) has some seriously strange habits – he picks up our Poo, and if that wasn’t bad enough, he walks round the village carrying it in a bag! I mean, how weird it that?

The “It’s a broom you idiot” has been joined by “It’s a mop you idiot”. I don’t know if they are related but they both need training especially the “It’s a mop you idiot”, IT makes the floor all wet!

We’ve met lots of other very nice ‘two-legs’ and they all say I’m a very pretty girl, then they go and spoil it by saying Doofuss is a handsome boy. I ask you, what are they thinking? I reckon they must need glasses where my brother is concerned. WINDOWS SUPPORT, TELEPHONE SCAM This scam seems to be doing the rounds again ……

The scam always starts the same way: the phone rings and the caller – usually with an Indian accent – asks for the householder, quoting their name before saying "I'm calling for Microsoft. We've had a report from your internet service provider of serious virus problems from your computer."

The owner is then directed to their computer, and asked to open a program called "Windows Event Viewer". Its contents are, to the average user, worrying: they look like a long list of errors, some labelled "critical". The caller then says. "Now let me guide you through the steps to fixing it."

The computer owner is directed to a website and told to download a program that hands over remote control of the computer, and the caller "installs" various "fixes" for the problem. And then it's time to pay a fee: £185 for a "subscription" to the "preventative service".

The only catch: there was never anything wrong with the computer, the caller is not working for Microsoft or the internet service provider, and the owner has given a complete stranger access to every piece of data on their machine.

The scam seems to have moved on from giving you your address (which they get from a telephone directory) and a fake IP number to convince you that they can really see your system. The scammer will now ask you to check a CLSID. This is where the average punter gets bamboozled. A CLSID is a Class Identifier stored in the Windows Registry . The caller uses this to make you think they have access to your computer and craftily achieve this by the things it asks you to do. Though people on dozens of web forums have recorded their experiences with the scammers, police and trading standards officers in the UK are powerless to stop them. UK telephone numbers for contacting the company on the sites are not "geographical" ‑ tied to a location ‑ but instead allocated to voice-over-internet providers. That means that the calls connect internationally, but cost the scammers almost nothing when anyone calls them. In the same way, it costs them virtually nothing to make the calls because the international part of the call goes via the internet.

If the payment has been made on a debit card ‑ as many are ‑ there is no hope of reversing the payment. "Microsoft does not make unsolicited phone calls to help you fix your computer." It says on its website. " If you receive an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft Tech Support, hang up.” Chris Wilson
