A Message from the L.I.F.E. Foundation It is with sad hearts that we have decided to dissolve the LIFE Foundation, the main purpose of this Foundation was to fundraise and create grants for Indigenous Female Entrepreneurs and to hire local Indigenous females. The few online fundraisers we had at grassroots level, has been reported to the government as "online gaming", and we are not a registered charity nor do we have gaming license and cannot do any fundraising efforts. This Foundation has taken a lot of volunteer time for me to build and I really had best intentions to support Indigenous Female Entrepreneurs this way, and to keep our one paid employee going, but without funding or fundraising this cannot happen. November will be our last grant we give out, and the remaining funds will be donated to an organization who supports Indigenous Entrepreneurship. We will payout this month for the monthly grant and the balance of the fundraising dollars will be donated to an organization who supports Indigenous Entrepreneurship. On December 1 our Facebook page will be closed, and our website will also close. You can still stay connected with us through our business page - Be Inspired! Professional Centre https://www.juliejohn.ca for updates, upcoming events, community engagement and our Secwepemc LIFE Newsletter updates etc. From the bottom of my heart, I give out a sincere apology. Julie John

FINANCE AND ABUNDANCE WORKSHOPS By Julie John

When Julie started her Be Inspired! Events & Event planning business, she dreamed of creating and hosting her own workshops. Julie’s dream was always close to her heart, but she was afraid to put herself out there. Fear of criticism which turned out to be her own self-criticism. Julie is now taking a leap of courage to step out of her comfort zone to facilitate and teach. Teaching what she had learned from her own personal experiences with finances and what she has learned over the years. From a very low point in her own financial story, she wanted to learn more about money, finance, abundance, savings and investing, so she started to read books. The more she learned, the more fascinated she became about this topic and wanted to share. In the hopes of inspiring others on the path to a positive mindset and financial wellness. Now she is offering free workshops to further master her skills, with room for improvement! “It’s amazing, what I grew up witnessing, and how normal it was for me to continue unhealthy patterns with money, and learning to unlearn those patterns I didn’t even know were holding me back.” Julie finds it interesting to learn new tricks and tools that she had no clue were even possible. She’d always “wish” things were better, or always dreamed of some of the things she is creating today. The power of your mind is so phenomenal, once you tap into knowing!! Julie recently completed a facilitation course - Indigenous Ways of Knowing - taught by Erica Doehring. It is a ‘train the trainer course’, focused on creating safe spaces, Indigenizing and decolonizing space when facilitating. This course has brought a lot of great tools, and provided a safe space to practice facilitating. It boosted Julie’s confidence to try on her own to facilitate what she has learned with money and start teaching others. Julie has now facilitated a few workshops with positive responses! The workshop titles include: Discovering Your Financial Starting Point and Goal Setting Dare to Dream – Budgeting Workshop Let’s Talk about Debt Law of Attraction and Vision Boards If you would like to book a facilitated workshop, please contact Julie John at 250-879-1087 (cell) or 250679-1156 (office) or email info.secwepemc@gmail.com

Check out upcoming upcoming workshops on the next page The Secwepemc L.I.F.E. Newsletter is copyrighted and may not be reproduced in whole or in part without the written consent of the publisher.

Christine Anderson is a Secwepemc woman from Neskonlith. She started her business – In My – Defense – to advocate for and raise awareness about Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls (MMIWG). In My Defense creates legal self-defense keychains with multi-use tools including a lanyard, seat belt cutter/window smasher, door opener/stylus/bottle opener, personal alarm, and a pom pom as a fun aesthetic addition. This self-defense based project was motivated by Christine’s vision to support people in feeling safer and more prepared in their communities. Christine comments, “I'm terrified of being an Indigenous woman, or just a woman in general these days” and this motivates her to take action to empower women by creating tools for self-defense and peace of mind. Christine’s biggest challenge is the rapid growth of her business and keeping up with demand. As one of the biggest projects Christine has taken on, the process has been rewarding and life-changing, filled with personal growth and new opportunities. Success for Christine is finding the courage to share her own personal story and having the opportunity to raise awareness for MMIWG. The brand is not exclusive to Indigenous women+ and everyone is welcome to purchase In My Defense products as Christine is looking to help all women+ feel safer. Becky Boughten and Luke Webb (Penticton Indian Band) are social entrepreneurs with LIVN GIVN Design Company - a clothing/apparel company with designs inspired by 10 year old Luke. LIVN GIVN was inspired by the mother and son duo seeking ways to encourage and uplift people in their struggles. You see, Luke and Becky have faced some monumental challenges together - having endured chemotherapy, meds and surgery while Luke was still in the womb. At four years old, Luke went through open-heart surgery and currently lives with three cardiac abnormalities. Despite these challenges, young Luke lives life to the fullest. Luke and Becky have sought ways to pay generosity forward, setting out on a mission to “share hope and ensure everyone we meet feels valued, supported and not alone no matter what life throws at them!”. LIVN GIVN Design Company contributes a portion of the apparel proceeds from each item to help people facing difficult life challenges. As social entrepreneurs, it is challenging to create and maintain a balance of heart and business. Becky expresses, “having overcome challenges of our own and observing many areas of need, it can be easy to give more and outside of what is reasonable to run and sustain a business well”. LIVN GIVN continues to increase their awareness and build a toolset in this area while anticipating creating and growing positive partnerships for the future. Success has come in the form of “being in a position to ‘connect the dots’ with bringing the right people together through personal relationships and corporate networking to further their mission(s) to help others. It is such a privilege to see people in our community and province working together for [collaborative] causes to encourage and lift up those who need it most”, Becky says. LIVN GIVN has been featured alongside local BC businesses and individuals in the inaugural Glohaven Community Hub ‘Indigenous Globox™’ in partnership with Shop First Nations and Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association. LIVN & GIVN is also a proud member of the Shop First Nations online initiative, the World Trade Centre, Vancouver and the RBC Global Connect/Trade Club. Check them out at www.livn-givn.com

INDIGENOUS ENTREPRENEUR HUB Greetings, I wanted to give an update on the Secwepemc Lakes Indigenous Entrepreneur Hub Action Plan meeting that was held on Wednesday, October 20th and Wednesday, November 17 to inform all the Steering Committee members and partners on our progress. Summer ended up being a slow time for committee members and we are now moving forward with the Task Team leads to move our goals forward. We adjusted the dates on the plan to fit the current time frame and I have attached the updated plan for your records. A meeting was set up with Brock Endean (Chase Chamber) on the development of the Business Plan for Thursday, October 28th at 10am with Julie and Dorothy to address the tasks for the Business Plan and Financial Strategy development. An update will be provided to the committee members. Regular meetings have been set up and will be held on the second Wednesday of each month. So the next two meetings will be held on Wednesday, December 15 at 6pm by Zoom. Please make note of the recurring meeting in your calendars.
