Faith Over Fear

Issue. 11 - úpekst ell nek̓ ú7

By Julie John

Fear is a bugger! It creeps in all of the time, and it can transform into a huge mountain if you allow fear to take control. When I first started this newsletter, it came to me as a thought, an idea! I love supporting Indigenous entrepreneurship, I love sharing information, resources, and promoting Indigenous businesses. I just finished reading a book called Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love), and she talked about how ideas that specifically come to you are meant for you to carry out. If you don’t follow these ideas, they move on to someone else. This concept made a lot of sense to me. Right after I read this book, I had this thought/idea that came to me, so naturally I thought I was being put to the test! I thought of creating a free online newsletter to promote, support, encourage, and share information/resources for Indigenous entrepreneurship within the Secwepemc Nation and beyond! I acted immediately on this idea, and put it out there! After the first article, I thought, “what the heck am I doing?” lol, I had no idea/experience running a free online newsletter, let alone gathering content etc. So I hired people to help me out. This is where Lisa Orton comes into the picture, I hired Lisa to help me with the layout of the newsletter, she edits, she gathers content, and she lays everything out and is quite creative and marvelous.lays everything out and is quite creative and marvelous.

She also conducts interviews and shares stories, events in the newsletter. This brought a lot of ease, and thinking ok, we are doing this, and it will be ok, after my panic and self-doubt of course! As this free e-newsletter is coming up to its one year, I kept mentioning I’d start writing content/articles. And as great as Lisa is, she kept asking me, “When will you submit, what will you write, can you write something for next article”. So, I started writing, which was an ok process, I sent to Lisa to help edit, and make sure it was all good to go. Once the newsletter came out that month, I started to panic and get fearful again. I was fearful of being judged, of being not good enough, of the worst. I was literally so scared and was frozen in fear. I thought what’s the worst that can happen?? I get a bad review, but I will learn from this experience and better myself. We did get some feedback, and it was very positive and supportive, HUGE RELIEF!! I allowed fear to stop me from writing and sharing. How I allowed fear to control me, instead of having faith it will all work out, and if it doesn’t I will learn!

Indigenous Entrepreneur Profile 2022

Red Hummingbird Boutique

Red Hummingbird Boutique recently opened at 632 Shuswap Ave, Chase, BC at Be Inspired Centre. Through the cooperative work of Secwepemc sister’s Miranda Dick and Gwa Ts'elletkwe, the Red Hummingbird Boutique transpired – a shop filled with Indigenous clothing, art, and home decor. It is a truly unique shop with one of a kind items, incorporating Indigenous art and design into unique pieces– beaded jewelry, necklaces, earrings, ties, ribbon skirts, ribbon shirts, new and upcycled clothing featuring Indigenous designs and Pendleton applique pieces, and a lot of home décor selected. They select what catches their eye, based on an item's colour or design - choosing what inspires them. Miranda appreciates streamlined and subtle aesthetics that represent her style. Miranda and Gwa create items with clean lines, embodying qualities that are different, authentic, and creative. Miranda started sewing clothing and star blankets many years ago for her children and community members with much of her inspiration coming from her mother who sewed clothing, star blankets and quilts. Her star blankets have been ordered from around the world from the US, Australia and Alaska. There are always challenges to overcome in small business ownership. Making time for family while building a business is a big one. Dealing with small administrative hang ups that overall do not seem that big but still set back sales and accessibility can be a challenge. For example, a square reader bought from the U.S. that does not work in Canada.

However, Miranda conveys her excitement in opening a storefront business and being a part of Be Inspired Centre in Chase that is creating and transforming space for Indigenous business owners. Moving from a virtual to a physical space to display and sell key pieces is a great success although virtual shopping is always available, you can visit the Facebook page to view items or make an appointment on Facebook to look at items via livestream. Visit the Red Hummingbird Boutique at 632 Shuswap Ave on the mainstreet of Chase, BC, Monday - Friday 9-4pm.

No More Stolen Sisters

Prayers and love for our stolen sisters

Remembering the women & girls loved and lost across Turtle Island

Art by Alex Dennis

We pray for justice for all of our stolen sisters. We want to honour and respect missing and murdered women and girls across the continent. Colonial violence against Indigenous women and girls is an ongoing issue, and while we are grateful for the rising awareness of MMIWG as a human rights crisis, we call for legislative justice and continued advocacy for Indigenous women and girls to live in world that honours and respects our existence, strength, and sacredness. We are grandmothers, granddaughters, daughters, mothers, nieces, wives, community members, leaders, and WE ARE LOVED.
