600 British Army soldiers take part in war-fighting experiment

Government outlines nuclear deterrent

More than 600 soldiers from the British Army have been taking part in a war-fighting experiment in California. They were joined by thousands of troops from six partner nations in the US to carry out Project Convergence Capstone 4 (PC-C4).

The exercise was staged to see how the US and its international partners would fight in a multidomain battlespace. Some of the cutting-edge technologies tested during PC-C4 have never been used on the ground before.

The Defence Nuclear Command Paper shows how more than £200 million of government funding will be invested at Barrow-in-Furness, the home of submarine building in the UK.

Commandos trial huskies to supply troops

British commandos have been trialling the use of huskies to supply troops with food and ammunition deep behind enemy lines in the Arctic Circle. The dogs could be used on high-risk supply runs in adverse terrain, a theory that the Commando Logistic Regiment and the Commando Helicopter Force’s Ground Mobility Troop put to the test in Norway.

Some 5,000 apprenticeships have also been announced for the next four years. BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, EDF and Babcock are among the industry partners helping the government to ensure the benefits are felt from the naval base on the Clyde to the nuclear laboratories in Aldermaston.

Brigadier Neil Budd, commander HQ 1 DRS BCT, said: “PCC4 is enabling us to develop and test new capabilities, taking advantage of new technologies and concepts that will ensure we are more lethal and net contributors to a multinational fight. It is about winning. PCC4 is allowing us to adapt in step with the emerging threat."

Mr Shapps said: “The threats facing the UK and our allies are increasing in scale, complexity and diversity, which is why our nuclear deterrent is as important now as it has ever been. This government has always been unequivocal in its support to the UK’s nuclear deterrence, which is foundational to national security, but also brings huge employment and skills opportunities.”

Considerations that were taken into account included the distance the dogs can travel, how snow conditions affect their speed and endurance and the planning required to navigate complex routes.

Captain Al Hunter of the Royal Marines said: "We have been addressing the threat of high tech weapons by looking at low tech, low signature solutions, like the huskies, to resupply advanced forces."

UK defence industry spending tops £25 billion

Stats published by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in February showed spending has topped £25 billion for the first time. It reflects the government’s commitment to improving the defence sector and equates to £370 being spent for each individual living in the UK.

It’s the third consecutive year of increased defence spending, with some 209,000 jobs being supported by the industry. Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland also saw an increased level of expenditure compared to previous years.

Grant Shapps, defence secretary, said: “As threats increase across the globe, it’s crucial that investment in our Armed Forces matches that picture. These statistics demonstrate how all parts of the UK are playing their part in that crucial work, delivering through our fantastic defence industry and boosting local prosperity.”

HMS Richmond destroys nine drones in the Red Sea

Royal Navy warship HMS Richmond has taken over from HMS Diamond in the Red Sea and destroyed nine drones with her Sea Viper missile system and guns. As part of Operation Prosperity Guardian, the ship is working to ensure freedom of navigation as vessels face attacks by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels.

Key objectives in the operation include intercepting weapons being smuggled to Yemen and strikes against Houthi military targets in the country. These measures are being backed up by imposing sanctions on members of the Houthis to hold them accountable for actions in the Red Sea.

Commander Peter Evans, commanding officer of HMS Diamond, said: “The situation in the region is fraught, and ships in the force are firing on a daily basis – we hand over the baton with our best wishes to the fantastic team in Richmond who we know will do a great job.”

PM hails civil servant hub

Rishi Sunak travelled to the North East to visit staff at the Darlington Economic Campus (DEC) earlier this month. It marks three years since the project was announced in a bid to move 22,000 civil service jobs out of London.

There are currently 750 people working at the DEC across a number of governmental departments, with this number expected to grow to 1,200 next year. When a new office is completed on Brunswick Street in 2026, hundreds more jobs will be created.

The prime minister said: "I am inspired to see brilliant civil servants from different departments working to deliver a brighter future for Britain. In just three years, DEC has attracted a huge amount of talent from the local area and has established itself as a central hub of government policy making."

Security researchers recognised with awards

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) hosted a special event at its headquarters in London to thank researchers for disclosing critical vulnerabilities.

As well as the presentation, a number of talks offered insight into the experience of finding and reporting vulnerabilities to the government. This enabled researchers to present their thoughts on how security posture and best practices within the field could be improved.

GCHQ joins LinkedIn

GCHQ has joined LinkedIn in a bid to recruit a wider mix of people to tackle real-world and online threats facing the UK. It has marked its arrival on the professional networking platform with the publication of a puzzle.

Anyone who can solve the 13 clues to spell out a message may have the lateral-thinking skills the intelligence agency is looking for in its recruits. The puzzle was created by Manchester-based artist Justin Eagleton to celebrate GCHQ’s presence in the city.

CyberFirst Girls winners attend ceremony

The winning teams in the CyberFirst Girls competition attended an awards ceremony hosted by the University of Oxford’s Robotics Institute. More than 50 girls had their cyber security skills recognised at the celebration.

Ollie Whitehouse, CTO of the NCSC, said: “It was great to meet with members of the UK-based researcher community and an honour to award them their coins. We want all security researchers, regardless of where they are in their career, to feel empowered to be able to responsibly discover and report vulnerabilities without negative repercussions and ultimately feel safe to hold a mirror up to government to help keep us honest.”

Anne Keast-Butler, director of GCHQ, said: “The world is getting more complex and we're only ever going to stay ahead of those threats by bringing together the right mix of minds that lets us tackle the challenges ahead. For us, that means bringing in people with different backgrounds, different experience, different insights, different knowledge, and creating a team where all of us can play our part. For us, it's clear that that diversity is mission critical.”

The event saw the participants undertake multilingual codebreaking, programming drones and role-playing scenarios. Oxford High School was the top-scoring team overall, with Newlands Girls’ School from Berkshire being the best newcomers and The Tiffin Girls’ School from Surrey the highestscoring returning team.

Felicity Oswald, interim CEO of the NCSC, said: “It’s fantastic to see so many talented young women engaging with cyber and technology and I hope it inspires them to consider a career in the cyber security industry, which needs more female representation.”

NCA works with international partners against LockBit

The nonprofit member organisation for cyber security professionals ISC2 has teamed up with IBM to launch a new certification. The entry-level programme will be accessed through the Coursera platform.

Professional Certificate, candidates with no previous experience will be prepared for a job in the field. It utilises content from ISC2’s CC certification training, which has proved popular seeing 360,000 people enrol.

Tech leaders make cyber security number one priority

Cyber security is the number one priority for 58 per cent of UK digital and technology leaders, according to a new study. Run by UK IT Leaders and the Horizon CIO Network, it found the issue to be a higher priority than digital transformation.

As more evidence emerges that threat actors are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their methods, using advanced technology, tech leaders are responding. Businesses require greater levels of protection and an increased focus on cyber security.

Lindy Cameron, CEO of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), said: “With incidents on the rise, it is vital organisations work with their suppliers to identify supply chain risks and ensure appropriate security measures are in place. Cyber incidents can have severe impacts on organisations of all sizes, both in the short and longer term, from causing reputational damage to grinding operations to a halt.”

Deputy PM hosts conference on hackers for hire

Oliver Dowden, deputy prime minister, is joining France in hosting 35 nations at an inaugural conference to challenge the irresponsible use of commercial cyber intrusion tools and services. It will culminate in the signing of the Pall Mall Process, an agreement to take joint action.

Big tech leaders, legal experts, human rights defenders and vendors of cyber intrusion tools and services will join the countries at the conference. During the events, the participants will discuss action on the commercial market for cyber intrusion tools and services, as well as the threat they pose to international security, human rights and the stability of cyberspace.

Paul Chichester, director of operations at NCSC, said: “It’s powerful to see such a broad community come together to discuss how we can make the commercial intrusion sector work better for security and society.”
