Choral Call to Worship Open to Me the Gates of Righteousness John Ness Beck Sanctuary Choir; Dr. Michelle Louer, conductor (1930-1987)

Open, open, open to me the gates of righteousness. I will praise Thee: for Thou hast heard me, And art become my salvation. Open, open, open to me the gates of righteousness.

Text: Psalm 118: 19, 21 (adapted)

* Call to Worship Rev. Danny L. Carpenter

One: O Lord, open to us the gates of righteousness so that we may enter them.

All: We will sing praises to you, for you hear our prayer, and you have become our salvation.

One: Give thanks to God, for God alone is good.

All: Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Holy God. Hosanna in the highest!

One: Let us worship God.

* Prayer of Adoration

Processional Hymn #88

Invitation to Confession

Kyrie Kyrie (from Symphony, no. 9, II) Antonin Dvořák (1841-1904) arr. Ruth Elaine Schram (b. 1956)

Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison.

Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Prayer of Confession

Patient God, we confess that we love a parade. We are happy to see banners waving and hear shouts of praise. Our hearts thrill to the spectacle. But we fail to see the resolve of Jesus; our shouts block out his words. He comes to us as King, and we expect to crown him with power. How fickle we are, O Lord. Soon, we will turn our backs and run from his presence. Still, you forgive us. You call us to turn our lives around — to see the needs of others, to reach out in trust, to witness to your good news of saving love. Heal our hearts and give us courage for the days ahead; for we ask this is Jesus’ name. (Silent Prayer)

Prayer for Illumination

First Scripture Lesson Psalm 118:19-29 (p. 554)

Anthem Ride On, King Jesus

Ride on, King Jesus, ride on, the conquerin’ king.

Oh, Ride on, King Jesus, ride on. No man can a-hinder thee. But now my race is almost done. No man can a-hinder thee. King Jesus rides a milk white horse. No man can a-hinder thee. The river of Jordan he did cross. No man can a-hinder thee.

He’s the King and the Lord of all. He’s the first and the last. He’s the Lord of Lords. Jesus is the Prince of peace. Oh, Ride on, King Jesus, just ride on. No man can a-hinder thee.

Spiritual arr. Moses Hogan (1957-2003)

Second Scripture Lesson Luke 19:28-40 (p. 957)

Protest of Palms

“He answered, ‘I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out.’”

(Luke 19:40)

Sermon
Rev. Christopher A. Henry

We Give Thanks to God

Prayers of the People and The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Invitation to Discipleship and Generosity

Offertory O Bien-aimé (from Marie-Madeleine) Jules Massenet Kristin Shaffer, soprano (1842-1912)

Tu meurs! Ne m’abandonne pas!

Ah! Je suis prête à te suivre où tu t’en vas!

O beloved, under your dark crown your bloody forehead shines, your forehead shines more than the forehead of a king!

Eternal glory already illuminates you, heaven is calling you!

The promise you made to me, I remember it!

Master! Do not abandon me! You are dying! Do not abandon me!

Ah! I am ready to follow you wherever you go!

* Choral Benediction Dein Will gescheh (from St. John Passion)

Your will be done, Lord, God, likewise On earth as in heaven. Grant us patience in time of sorrow, to be obedient in love and suffering; check and guide all flesh and blood That acts contrary to your will!

J.S. Bach (1685-1750)

Postlude Allegro molto (from Sonata No. 6) Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)

Note: Today’s Choral Benediction and Postlude quote the German chorale Vater unser im Himmelreich (Our Father in Heaven), a paraphrase of the Lord’s Prayer by Martin Luther.
