Voices in Action 2019-2020 ANNUAL REP OR T

Together, We Lead When I reflect on this past school year, I am filled with both a boundless sense of awe and a deep sense of gratitude for the student leaders of SGS. Their curiosity and enthusiasm for life, loyalty to one another, and earnest desire to make a mark on this world are inspirational. And, these days we could all use something to inspire us. The ongoing pandemic and protests demanding racial equity and the end to police brutality had a profound impact on our community. In a time when our school family would have provided an anchor for action and reflection, we were separated from each other and relearning how to connect across virtual platforms. It was a moment when the wellbeing of our children could have been in jeopardy. Yet it was our students who adapted the fastest to this new reality. As our community reckoned with our individual and institutional responsibility in the midst of social outrage, our students stepped forward to take action in support of the Movement for Black Lives. This courageous leadership is the heart of what makes the Seattle Girls’ School mission special. Our school is a space where the powerful cycle of social change happens; from planting the seeds of learning to the labor of difficult conversations and self-examination to the incredible blossoming of our students into community leaders and thoughtful activists. My immense appreciation extends to all of our SGS families, our indefatigable faculty and staff, and to each one of our community members who has stood with us throughout this year and so many others. Together we are building a brighter future!

Mission-Driven: Inside the design and planning process for Seattle Girls’ School’s future home

Over the past three years, Seattle Girls’ School has steadily moved towards its goal of building a permanent home; a new building and campus that will meet the expanding needs of its students, faculty, and staff. In dreaming of a new campus, SGS leadership was challenged to envision a space that would be as creative and dynamic as the SGS community itself. Through an intense planning process in collaboration with Mahlum Architects, that vision will soon come to life. The focus on mission fit began when SGS chose Mahlum Architects to plan and design the new building. The firm specializes in pre-K-12th grade schools and healthcare facilities, has a holistic approach, and has the same strong female leadership that SGS prides itself on fostering. Mahlum Principal—and lead architect on the project—Corrie Rosen explained, “When we design a school, we don’t think of it just as a place for learning. A school is also where students experiment, live, and heal, and the building needs to reflect that.”

3

Incorporating input from students, faculty and the community in an iterative process, Mahlum settled on three main drivers for its design: student ownership, collaboration at multiple scales, and a community space. On the first floor of the new building, a large gathering area will house community meetings and other all-school events. Permeable classrooms and flexible spaces will allow the school to maximize square footage and make our environment fit our collaborative approach—not the other way around. Staying true to the values of the original campus, the new space will also integrate

On the second floor, classrooms with sliding doors open onto a larger shared learning space.

the environment around it with rain gardens and other garden spaces to grow plants, vegetables, and flowers. As the space evolves, later phases of the design will incorporate a full gymnasium for sports and additional community space, as well as expanded classroom spaces for more students. At every level, the new campus will reflect Seattle Girls’ School’s focus on community and joyful learning. This is the building where future leaders will find their voices and champions of change will gain their courage. We are thrilled to see its fruition.

The capital campaign made remarkable progress in 2019-20, even though the COVID-19 crisis put our efforts on hold for more than three months. Our ability to maintain momentum through these challenging times has been a testament to the commitment of our volunteers and donors. In our conversations with donors, it has been truly inspiring to see how the mission of SGS resonates with each and every one. We are grateful for their incredible support, which has enabled us to seize this opportunity to build a permanent home for SGS. We are now within striking distance of our fundraising goal and we look forward to bringing the entire SGS community together in 2021 to make our dream a reality. —Karen Lane and Natalie Anderson, Rise-Up Campaign Co-Chairs

18th Annual Luncheon Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the SGS annual Luncheon was held virtually on Friday, April 3, 2020. In an affirmation of our mission we raised over $117,000 for tuition assistance—a boon to families affected by the economic stress of these difficult times. SGS remains committed to supporting our families, fulfilling our mission of equity and empowerment, and providing our students with the highest quality education. We would like to once again thank each and every person who tuned in to celebrate our students, and we are beyond grateful for the continued support we received from our community.

This year’s recipient of the Grace Hopper Award for Outstanding Achievement was Dr. Leslie Walker-Harding, the Chief Academic Officer and Senior Vice President of Seattle Children’s Hospital. Over the past 25 years, she has focused on equity and inclusion in our workforce of health providers to achieve excellence in healthcare and to eliminate health disparities. In her taped remarks, she said that “Most importantly, I valued embracing change, because I thought that the true path to freedom for AfricanAmericans in this country was change.”

Annual Fund The SGS Annual Fund is our primary fundraising campaign of the year, with the purpose of covering the difference between tuition and the actual cost of a child’s education. Money raised from the Annual Fund is considered unrestricted, and goes towards such necessary programming as Wednesday Workshops, classroom resources, academic excursions, and sports. Though Annual Funds are common to independent schools, SGS sets itself apart by placing greater importance on the participation of our entire community rather than the individual amount given. In the 2019-20 school year, we achieved 96% participation of our families, faculty, staff, and Trustees, and raised over $133,000 for the Annual Fund. Throughout the six weeks of the campaign, we celebrated SGS values such as Appreciation, Balance, and Compassion, and the myriad ways that our students live those values every day. We are incredibly grateful to our SGS families and each and every person who donated an individually meaningful amount to help us reach and exceed our goal.

SGS students participate in the pumpkin carving party and community event that kicks off the Annual Fund each year.
