Karavan 4 the Kidz

Raised so far - £1,855

Dear Editor, We have just embarked on Karavan GET £30,000 4 The Kidz II and would love the TAR local community to get involved with fundraising. For those who are unaware - in 2013 a few friends got together and raised nearly £25,000 to purchase a caravan and site it locally at Trecco Bay. The caravan was then donated to LATCH, the Welsh Childrens Cancer Charity, the idea being that the caravan was used by the little kids suffering from this terrible disease and indeed their parents and brothers and sisters. The caravan is in constant use and proved to be a massive success to the point where the charity would love to own a second caravan to be able to offer even more children and their families this crucial respite. The target is to raise £30,000 this time so any help would be gratefully appreciated, whether you would like to organise a quiz, coffee morning, sponsored run, or even ask your employers if they have a designated charity? Any donations can be made through Just Giving Karavan 4 The Kidz, or contact us through our Karavan 4 The Kidz Facebook page or Emyr Owen branch of Latch page, here you’ll find more information about Latch and a list of different fundraising dates so you can get involved. Last month we held the ‘Music in the Marquee’ night. Thanks to the Hi Tide, the Natwest gang, Porthcawl Hotel Gym, Beales and Flow Surf Shop. Thank you also to The Fairways Hotel, who donated some amazing prizes for a very successful WRC raffle. We would love the local community to continually embrace this project and see what we can achieve together! Karavan 4 The Kidz

Dear Editor, To brighten our darker days. If winter comes, can spring be far behind? Anthony Callaghan Porthcawl

Project Ration Pack Dear Editor, Surprisingly, there are many ex-servicemen in our communities that are struggling with finances and unemployment, maybe through a mental or physical disability sometimes resulting from combat tours. When you are faced with a decision weather to eat well, or pay the bills to keep a roof over your head, many would choose to go hungry or make do with less. HTW Support are a Veterans Charity previously based at the Rest in Porthcawl and our aim is to give support to all ex servicemen and their families who find themselves suffering hardship and are sometimes too proud to ask for help. Now based at Kenfig Hill, HTW have recently launched ‘Project Ration Pack’ which is working in partnership with Tesco Swansea Marina and gives food parcels to hungry Veterans in the community. Getting the word around that this service is available is vital and we are asking the general public to please get in touch with HTW Support if they are aware of any Veteran or a Veterans family that could benefit from a food parcel. Working together this way, we can maybe help reduce the pressure that is so clearly on our food banks who provide groceries to so many families in need. Letters Charity Night for the Motor Neuron Disease Association Dear Editor, On Monday 12th October I organised a charity ladies night in Nottage to raise funds for the Motor Neuron Disease Association. The theme of the evening was ‘shoes, bags and scarves’ with people donating their unwanted quality items and then purchasing some great new buys on the night, all whilst enjoying a glass of wine or two! The event was inspired by the fact that I could no longer wear my heels having been diagnosed with MND in July this year. The event was a great success, raising £780 for the MND Association. The MND Association aims to improve care and support for people with Motor Neuron Disease, their families and carers. They also fund and promote research that leads to new understanding and treatments, to and brings us closer to a cure for MND. The MND Association also campaigns and raise awareness so the needs of people with MND and everyone who cares for them are recognised and addressed by wider society. I wish to thank family, friends, ex-colleagues and friends of friends who made the evening such a success and a big thank you to all of the local businesses who donated fantastic raffle prizes for the night! To find out more about MND or to find out how you can help this worthwhile cause please visit www.mndassociation.org Linda White Nottage, Porthcawl

Thanks From Macmillan Cancer Support Dear Editor, On behalf of Macmillan Cancer Support, I would like to thank your readers for their amazing efforts to ensure the success of World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. We know that thousands of coffee mornings were held in schools, workplaces, community centres and homes all over Wales to raise money to support people affected by cancer. This year was the 25th anniversary of World’s Biggest Coffee Morning and what a fantastic celebration it has been! We have seen photos of the most amazing cakes but we have also seen the most brilliant photos of people getting together with friends and colleagues for a chat, a cup of coffee and a slice of cake to raise money for Macmillan. Today in Wales more than 130,000 people are living with and beyond cancer. The money raised will help us to continue to provide services in Wales, including funding our nurses, physiotherapists, welfare benefits advisers and our information centre in some of Wales’ hospitals. Susan Morris Head of Services for Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales

More Thanks From Macmillan Dear Editor, The Bridgend Committee of Macmillan Cancer Support wish to thank all who supported their recent fund-raising events. The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning at Trinity Church, Porthcawl raised £778, collections at Marks & Spencer, McArthur Glen raised £2,258 and collections at Tesco on Maesteg and Bridgend raised £914. It was a magnificent effort by volunteers and public alike THANK YOU ALL! Frank Murphy, Porthcawl

My Garden As Your Dog Toilet Dear Editor, I would be very grateful if you could print this email in order for me to thank the dog owners who walk their dogs along the Whimbrels in Rest Bay and allow their dogs to use my front garden as their own personal dog toilet. Not only do they allow their dogs to soil my lawn but those who do bag it up feel that they can leave these bags on my lawn as well. So may I take this opportunity to inform these irresponsible people, and you know who you are, that because of them I cannot allow my grandchildren to play on my lawn and to say shame on you! A Really Fed Up Resident (Name and address supplied)

Porthcawl Sunset Dear Editor, Here’s some pictures I randomly took on a walk with my dog over Rest Bay Porthcawl when the weather was unusually sunny recently (roughly October 1st) which I would like to share with Seaside News readers. I liked the view so much across the cliff top I stopped to take a few pictures. I was going for the sunset with sea and a bit of land as the colours looked fantastic and seemed to merge into each other (my second picture which I quite like) but my favourite one is just catching the bench with the lady sat down looking out to sea (picture 1). I have titled it ‘Looking out at what tomorrow may bring’ (by now my creative juices were flowing). Mind you it also reminds me of Forrest Gump on the bus bench but maybe not as good a title! I’m no photographer but my iPhone really caught the colours of my pleasant walk. Hope you like them as much as I enjoyed taking them and titling them. SCHOOLS Porthcawl Comprehensive School

Our Year 12 had a treat recently when we held a team building and development day at school. As well as designing and building towers out of newspaper, strong enough to hold an egg, teams also played people bingo and games designed to improve their communication and team skills. The highlights of the day were visits from the Marines who put the pupils through their paces on the field, and from Adventures who re-iterated the importance of teamwork by encouraging pupils to put their trust in each other by leaning backwards together holding a circular rope! As we go to press, our National Young Consumers Champions have been invited to the BBC studios in London. Unfortunately Nat King is unable to join his team mates as he is away in Aberystwyth at university, but Jack Bridger, Felicity Williamson-Sarll and Matthew Dang are going. Here they will be interviewed by the BBC “Rip off Britain” programme, and take part in a further quiz against a team of adults, including Trading Standards members. Further details to follow! Year 10 Textiles pupils enjoyed spending time at Coast Café last week as part of their research into designing a new sea front café for their coursework. Owner, Alison Bennett has kindly agreed to display some of their work inside. We are getting into charity mode here at school with our annual Charities’ Week later this month when our pupils will raise money for Children in Need amongst several local charities. We have already collected sweets for Romania and raised over £220 in the MacMillan coffee morning, and look forward to seeing what our Head Team has in store for us this year! Our Year 6 Open Evening for prospective pupils for 2016 was a tremendous success last month. Young pupils particularly enjoyed the “hands on” Science experiments. We are now expecting over 200 pupils into Year 7 next year. Anyone who missed this, but would like further details is welcome to contact the school on 01656 774100, or visit our website on www.porthcawlschool.co.uk. ECO Teams Link Up Together The Eco Team at Pencoed Comprehensive have visited Pencoed Primary’s Eco Team to kick start what is hoped will be a long lasting and rewarding collaboration. Mr Pownall, Head of Geography at the comprehensive believes his pupils can learn a lot from year 5 and 6 pupils at the primary. He says; “it is at primary school age that the raw ideas develop to make significant changes to the way a school can operate more sustainably. The transition from year 6 to 7 is a busy time and the good work that the younger pupils have done in primary can be overlooked when they arrive in year 7”. The first collaborative activity was a recent beach clean at Ogmore Beach. The schools were met by Tim Wort from Keep Wales Tidy. It was a very enjoyable and successful project with numerous locals approaching the pupils and staff and commending them on their hard work and ‘green’ attitudes. Thank you to Mr Lambert and Mrs King from Pencoed Primary for agreeing to this exciting partnership. We are currently planning our next joint venture. Linda Harpwood School Manager Pencoed Comprehensive School

Annual Prize Day Ceremony St Clare’s School has revived the tradition of rewarding its young achievers with an Annual Prize Day Ceremony at The Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl. Boys and girls from the Prep School right up to Sixth Form received prizes for academic excellence and sporting achievements. Headmaster Simon Antwis commented: “Porthcawl’s famous Grand Pavilion provided the perfect stage to celebrate the achievements of the past year, showcase the talents of our pupils and reinforce our ambitions for the coming year.” St Clare’s welcomed the Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayoress of Porthcawl as Guests of Honour, with Geoff Howell as Guest Speaker. A retired Aerospace Engineer who worked on the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) more commonly known as the ‘Star Wars’ project in the 1980s, Geoff is also a Chair of Governors for several schools in Bristol with a reputation for championing the education of pupils. Addressing a full house at The Grand Pavilion, he shared some of his favourite motivational quotes with the audience, “Education is what remains after you have forgotten everything you learned in school”, “Live the life you imagine” and “Set your course by the stars, not by the lights of every passing ship”. The longest half term of the year is nearly done and we have already fitted so much in. Our ‘We are Writers’ book is now finished and every pupil in the school has completed their amazing story. The front cover, and colour scheme, has been chosen by our year 6 pupils and the book is being published at the moment. There are a number of amazing creations in the book and the pupils are very excited about seeing their work in print. We will be having a special Book Launch Day in November when all pupils will come in dressed as their favourite book character. We have also been training hard for the start of the rugby and netball season. We have played our first few games and are looking forward to building on our fantastic achievements from last year. Finally we are working hard towards becoming a Platinum EcoSchool. We have lots of events planned for an action packed Eco Week which will include a power free day as well as an Eco fashion show in which all models will be dressed in recycled clothes. Andrew Wood

Whilst summer saw Cynffig’s best GCSE results ever, autumn too has been a season of celebration and success. Our award winning A level Engineering Team of Lucy Davies, Ross Hooper, Hywel Park and Laura Underhill, were invited to showcase their pioneering EESW prototype at Sony in the presence of Finance Minister Jane Hutt. Cynffig’s commitment to improving literacy for all has been recognised by Central South Consortium in naming Cynffig a ‘Literacy Lead’ school. This year we will welcome practitioners from across the country, from both primary and secondary schools, to see how we support and encourage our pupils in developing literacy skills in every subject area. This September we celebrated all that is Cynffig when we welcomed record numbers to our Year 6 ‘Open Evening’. Prospective pupils and parents were given a taste of the learning innovation and pupil care that’s at the heart of our community school. Finally, we are so proud of year 9 student Nia Anderson, who fought off over 4000 other competitors to win the secondary category of the national ‘My Money Week Competition’. Nia and her family will attend the ‘Prize Giving Day’ at The Museum of London. For further coverage visit www.pfeg.org/mymoneyweek Hannah Castle Head Teacher 01656 740294

SCHOOLS Autumn At West Park Primary

Afon y Felin News

This month our junior pupils visited Pembroke Castle for an exciting trip to support their theme. A fantastic time was had exploring the medieval castle and its underground cavern. The children were delighted by the fascinating guided tours about the birthplace of Henry VII. School elections have taken place and the school and eco councillors have already attended meetings. They are enjoying discussing plans for school improvement in particular the outdoor environment. We have recently taken delivery of two fantastic wooden outdoor learning structures; a potting shed and a science station. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our parents and families for their harvest donations. We chose to donate to the Bridgend Food Bank, an organisation that provides local people with three days of nutritionally balanced food through a voucher system in times of need. Thanks also to Father Craig for holding our Harvest services and of course to the children for their wonderful behaviour and enthusiastic singing which was noted by parents. Mr I Bird Head Teacher

A big thank you to Demi-Leigh Gifford, Scarlett Andrews, Charlotte Jones, Keiran Andrews, Charlie Perham, Natalia Purcell, Rhianna Knowles, Cerys Pritchard, Sofia Chayka, Alfie Price, Ellis Pride, Adam Clatworthy, Amy Williams, Lily-Joe Murphy, Matthew Walker, Scarlett James, Matthew Munday, Ben Smalldon, Charlie Murphy and Kurtis Dobbin, who represented our school at the Harvest Festival Open Day in St. James’ Church. The singing was outstanding, and very much enjoyed by the congregation. Results of the dress the vegetable competition are: 1st Cerys Pritchard, 2nd Demi-Leigh Gifford and Matthew Walker, 3rd Sofia Chayka and Scarlett James. Nursery and Reception enjoyed a visit to Cardiff Museum and Roath Park, where they particularly enjoyed the dinosaurs! PC Steve has been a frequent visitor, he spoke to The Little Acorns about people that help us, to The Oaks concerning cyber bullying and internet safety, and to the school on how to keep safe on Halloween and Bonfire Night - all very important lessons. Kerbcraft has commenced with The Willows, where the children are taken on walks and taught road safety. The Reading Café and Family Learning have proved popular with parents attending to support their children. The Cedars are off to Cardiff Castle and The Oaks are visiting Cardiff City Stadium, as part of the Literacy Programme that has been taking place this term, and they will also get a tour behind the scenes! Annual Prize Day Ceremony

Pil Primary News

St Clare’s School has revived the tradition of rewarding its young achievers with an Annual Prize Day Ceremony at The Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl. Simon Antwis Headmaster

Year 4 have had an extremely busy fortnight completing their project work on ‘999 Emergencies’. The children have been making links with our community hero’s, including a visit from the paramedic first response car, where they investigated different types of emergency situations and response times. During their visit to Kenfig Hill Fire Station they had the opportunity to use a real fire hose. They also visited Pyle Library to improve their research skills and the local PCSO’s gave an informative talk on the role of the police within the community. The children would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped with this project. S Mustoe Class Teacher

SCHOOLS Newton Primary School Pupils from Year 3 and 4 have been helping to Keep Wales Tidy and make a difference to their community. They joined forces with Brain Jones from Keep Wales Tidy to help clean up Wales in one of the county’s biggest clean-up campaigns. With litter pickers and bin bags provided by Keep Wales Tidy, the pupils went down armed and ready on to Coney Beach in Porthcawl to undergo a litter pick. Year 5 pupils have been working with artist Nigel Talbot to create individual clay plaques as part of a wooden sculpture on display for the Porhcawl Shout and BCBC led refurbishment of the Station Hill subway area. The sculpture commemorates the site of the former signal box and crossing. The pupils attended the official opening and met with Bridgend AM Caryn Jones. We held a coffee morning at school in aid of MacMillan, the pupils entertained family and friends singing their favourite songs and sharing a cup cake. Thank you to everyone who came and helped us raise £487 in support of this charity. Rachel John Head Teacher

Nottage News Thanks to Mrs Aileen Jones who organised the Macmillan Coffee Morning on 25th September. We had lots of donations of cakes from staff and parents. Many volunteers helped to set up the canteen and serve on the day. The school choir also sang to entertain our coffee drinkers. Well done to everyone in raising a grand total of £800 for a really worthwhile cause. Once again, the PTA Discos were a roaring success and the children thoroughly enjoyed throwing their shapes to music. There are trips galore this term. Year 6 pupils had a fantastic trip to Theatr Na Nog to watch Rosie’s War and Swansea Museum to support their work in history and literacy. Year 3 visited St Fagans where they weaved wool, ground grain and had a sneak preview of the new Celtic Village. The Sherman Theatre has been working with our Year 2 children. Our Harvest Festival was a lovely occasion and food donations were given to the Bridgend Food Bank, who provide meals for needy families in the borough. Christmas will soon be upon us and in the weeks to come the children will be hard at work preparing for their Christmas concerts. Kerry Townley

Mr Jones’ Ironman Journey

Bryntirion Comprehensive School teacher Mr C Jones has recently completed his greatest ever accomplishment in finishing the Ironman Wales event held at Tenby on September 13th 2015. The Ironman is widely considered one of the most difficult oneday sporting events in the world consisting of a 2.4-mile (3.86 km) ocean swim, a 112-mile (180.25km) bicycle ride and a marathon 26.2-mile (42.2km) run, raced in that order and without a break. Mr Jones successfully finished the race in 12hours 49minutes placing 66th in his age category, beating the 17 hour cut-off time and strict check points to become an Ironman. Bryntirion Comprehensive school supported Mr Jones in the month’s building up to the event by helping to raise money for the charity ‘Scope’ through various fundraising activities such as a Christmas craft fare, cake sale and a staff v sixth form football match. The total amount raised was an astonishing £2000 which made Mr Jones the top fundraising athlete at the Ironman event. Mr Jones explained, ‘it was a great experience with many challenging hills on the Pembrokshire coast, I’d like to thank Bryntirion Comprehensive School for supporting me every step of the way and all their fundraising efforts for the charity Scope’. Mr Jones loves a new challenge and is setting his sights on swimming the English Channel in 2016. Nick Brain

News Shaping Bridgend County Borough’s future There’s still time to tell us what you think about Bridgend County Borough Council’s new priorities and budget proposals as our consultation doesn’t end until 22 November. The council has already found £20m of budget reductions over the last two years, but we’re still facing a shortfall of up to £50m by 2020 and cuts like these demand big changes. It’s plain to see that some very difficult choices need to be made that will affect each and every one of us in different ways. We plan to focus on fewer priorities over the next four years, reduce spending on some services and introduce or increase charges for others. Around 140,000 people live in the county borough and we want to ensure everyone has the chance to have their say on our proposals. So help us shape Bridgend’s future by visiting www. bridgend.gov.uk/future where you can complete an online survey and see details of community consultation events. Everyone who completes an online survey will receive a free seven-day pass to a Halo leisure centre plus the chance to win a full year’s free membership. Alternatively, call us on 01656 643664 to request a paper copy or pick one up from a library. Councillor Mel Nott OBE Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

Time For Action On Historic Building As Shadow Welsh Heritage Minister, I repeat my call to Bridgend County Borough Council to take action to save one of Porthcawl’s historic buildings. The old Harlequin building at the entrance to the lower Hillsboro Place car park is in urgent need of repair and restoration and I am backing Porthcawl Civic Trust Society’s demands that something be done. Despite attacks on me from cabinet member Chales Smith, I want to know when this building was last inspected by the council and when was any money spent on maintenance – and how much? BCBC wanted to knock it down as part of its plans for the Porthcawl regeneration but Welsh government and Cadw refused consent. It has historic significance as the last remnant of Porthcawl railway station. BCBC has had years to consider what to do but so far has managed to do nothing. And while it does nothing, the building is deteriorating. As they cannot knock it down, they should renovate it now before it reaches the point where it will cost a fortune to put right. SUZY DAVIES AM Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com

Porthcawl Celebrates Its First Blue Plaque Tackling The Housing Crisis A month ago I outlined to a Chartered Institute of Housing Cymru conference Welsh Liberal Democrats plans to increase the current housing budget of £35 million per year to £70 million per year in the next assembly term so as to set a target of 20,000 new affordable homes over the same period. This would be double the Labour Government’s target for the current term. We would also make it a statutory requirement for the Welsh Government to set a target for new affordable homes at the beginning of each Assembly term and to report on progress annually. The Welsh Liberal Democrats are the only party with the ambition to tackle Wales’ housing crisis. We believe that every person should be able to provide a secure environment for their family. Wales needs a government that will invest in a house building programme so everyone can have a roof over their heads. Sadly, under the Labour Government in Wales, that ambition has been completely lacking. For decades, successive Conservative and Labour governments have not built enough homes. This has left us with a crippling undersupply of housing while demand for social housing has soared. Welsh Liberal Democrats will address this imbalance.

Last month saw the unveiling of Porthcawl’s first Blue Plaque to commemorate the area’s historic links with the Dyffryn Llynfi railway line and the South Wales coal industry. The plaque has been installed at Station Hill as part of a project led by the Porthcawl Shout forum which both the council and Porthcawl Town Council have supported. Located near a piece of artwork that features railway-themed designs from the pupils of Newton Primary, the Blue Plaque is a great reminder of the town’s heritage as visitors and younger residents may not be aware of Porthcawl’s association with the railway - from the coal deliveries that began nearly 200 years ago to the steam trains that puffed into the town packed with holidaymakers. Blue Plaques are placed at sites of historical importance across the UK, so it is hoped that the one at Station Hill will be the first of many to adorn points of interest across Porthcawl. Plans are also underway to launch the Porthcawl Townscape Heritage initiative later this month, and this will restore a number of old buildings from the town’s historical past - look out for more details on this in the next edition of Seaside News. News Samaritans Launch 24 Hour Helpline Samaritans have been providing support to people struggling to cope for over 50 years. They provide somewhere to turn and someone to talk to about problems, freely and anonymously. I work closely with Samaritans as part of my role as chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on suicide and self-harm prevention and I see the fantastic work that they do. Being given the time to talk through your problems with someone you do not know without judgment is an added weight off the mind of a caller. I was so pleased to see that from 21st September all calls to Samaritans in the UK are free of charge after the launch of the number 116 123. As Samaritans own research suggests people in the lowest social economic groups are ten times more likely to die by suicide than those from more affluent areas. These figures clearly show the need for a free phone line so that an ear can be lent to anyone in need. I know this has been a long-term goal for the charity, Ruth Sutherland, Samaritans CEO said recently, “it has long been an aspiration for Samaritans to make our helpline number free to callers, so this is a really positive step in improving access to our life-saving support”. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Samaritans for all the brilliant work they do. If you are in need of help please give their free helpline a call on 116 123. Now it is up to the Welsh Government to build on the success by showcasing the nation on a pan-European level and even global stage as never before. This tournament will be seen not just across the European continent but screened across the world and, as a result, the Welsh Government must focus its marketing efforts on promoting Wales. A team of marketing and business experts need to be out in France during the tournament selling our nation. Many towns and cities in Wales have close twinning links with counterparts in France. They may be able to provide support and advice on establishing links so we get from the best tournament for Wales. Our fans will also have a key role to play as ambassadors for the nation. Wherever supporters travel in Europe they always show the best of Wales with their friendliness and enthusiasm. Participation in the tournament should also give a boost to businesses here, particularly in the leisure industry. BETHAN JENKINS AM Plaid Cymru www.bethanjenkins.org

Visit To The Senedd By Porthcawl U3A

Empty Shops Benefit Nobody

I always enjoy meeting constituents and I was delighted that a group from Porthcawl U3A accepted my invitation to visit the Senedd, the main public building of the National Assembly, in Cardiff Bay. Porthcawl U3A has recently celebrated its 20th anniversary having been set up in 1995. Porthcawl U3A is part of the University of the Third Age providing informal educational, creative and leisure opportunities. There are over 500 members and 34 interest groups. During their recent visit to the Senedd, the group from Porthcawl U3A enjoyed a cup of coffee and a cake in the café in the Oriel before embarking on a guided tour of the Senedd. As part of the tour, the group learned about how the Assembly has evolved since the institution was set up in 1999, about decision- making and accountability and about the history of the Senedd building itself. The group also had the opportunity to ask their own questions. I was also delighted that the group was able to have the opportunity to watch a session of First Minister’s Questions. People who have visited the Assembly often tell me that it is different watching it in real life to watching it on television. During a particularly lively exchange, I was pleased that I was able to refer to my constituents. It was great to meet the group, to hear what they thought about First Minister’s Questions and to learn more about Porthcawl U3A. I hope that everyone enjoyed the day.

I’m sure that, like me, you were concerned to learn that as of November this year, seven public toilet facilities in Bridgend are to be closed by Bridgend County Borough Council. This is a serious public health issue, about which I have quizzed the First Minister in the Senedd. Even more worrying, however, is that this may be symptomatic of a deeper problem. Almost a fifth of shops in Bridgend town centre now stand empty, with the unthinkable possibility that we could pass “the point of no return”. Businesses are rightly worried. Our town must not be allowed to slide into permanent decay and the County Borough Council must respond with vision, flair and imagination. ‘More of the same’ can no longer be good enough. Empty shops benefit nobody. Welsh Conservatives would begin by cutting business rates, working for better access, more investment, and a brighter future for all. Bridgend deserves better.

News George Jabbour Challenges The First Minister Syrian-born George Jabbour has been selected as the local Conservative candidate for Bridgend and Porthcawl, and will be facing Wales’ First Minister Carwyn Jones in next year’s Assembly Election. The 33-year-old, who has a background in engineering and investment, was one of three candidates who participated in an open primary selection meeting. Mr Jabbour was successful on the first ballot when he secured more than 50 per cent of the vote. Conservative Association chairman Coun Ken Watts said: “We were delighted to see so many people at the open primary. The primary has resulted in the selection of an excellent, high-calibre and committed candidate who will take the fight to Labour and to Carwyn Jones.” Mr Jabbour, who lives in the constituency, moved to Britain in 2004 and became a British citizen in 2011. He has degrees in civil engineering and finance. George worked in banking before setting up his own business offering financial advice to public sector organisations. He commented: “I am delighted to have been selected as the local Conservative candidate for Bridgend and Porthcawl. I want to use my background in engineering and investment to deal with the local challenges”.

Emergency Lesson For Pyle Primary Pupils Year 4 pupils at Pyle Primary School were given a valuable lesson by local police officers recently. PC Gerry Mckay and PCSO Kyle Maiden dropped into the Pyle Life Centre to bring to life the children’s current term project which looks at the work of the emergency services. The budding teachers gave a lesson about the difference between the 999 and 101 non-emergency numbers. They also talked about the differences between their roles and about the work they do for the community. PCSO Kyle Maiden, said: “Visits like these to young children help build relationships and make impressions that last a long time. It’s important that children see police as the approachable people that they are and should be. They were really interested in what we had to say and had lots of questions. We all had a lot of fun.” Kyle Maiden PCSO

Macmillan Coffee Afternoon

This month I’d like to briefly talk about the resurrection of Jesus. Obviously one may contend that the resurrection of Jesus actually happened, but there seems to be plenty of evidence for it. One is how the disciples in the bible were changed in their beliefs about the resurrection. One author said, “The apostles did not blindly accept as truth the resurrection of Jesus. When Mary Magdalene first saw the resurrected Lord, she went to the apostles, but they did not believe her”. However, Jesus later appeared to the disciples which they claim really happened. Paul the apostle also claimed that Jesus had appeared to him and also five hundred at one time and that some were still alive when he wrote about it, meaning that if anyone wanted to check out his story they could easily ask those present at the time (1 Corinthians 15 v 5 – 6). Also, there was something radical in the way they shared the message. Most of these people mentioned were actually martyred for what they came to believe in. They were so convinced in what they saw they died testifying about it. I believe these guys really did see the resurrected Jesus, which obviously means that he is alive today and one day coming back. Neil Harvey

On Friday the 25th September RMBI Albert Edward held its annual Macmillan Coffee afternoon. We were lucky that so many of our staff and residents families baked cakes and supported the event. We were so grateful that the Golden Oldies performed for our guests. Not only did they perform they also donated a £200 cheque to Macmillan to add to our total. The highlight of the event was when Elvis came back and did a rendition with the Golden Oldies. ELVIS WAS BACK IN THE BUILDING! We served tea, coffee and cake and held a raffle and together with the Golden Oldies cheque a grand total of £ 581 will be donated to Macmillan. This is a charity that is very close to our hearts here at Albert Edward with many members of staff having either had cancer or a relative that has suffered from this cruel illness. This is the 5th year that RMBI Albert Edward has run a Macmillan Coffee Afternoon and this year’s total has taken us well above the £1,700 mark since we have started the coffee afternoons. We look forward to making next year the biggest and best yet. Rebecca Timms

It’s Getting Closer! News From The Talbot It’s that time of the year again when everyone is planning their Christmas parties. The Talbot has planned their Christmas Showtime for Saturday, 28th November, with two Talbot Diners’ Christmas Lunches on Friday, 11th and Wednesday, 16th December. As always, our bingo players will have a bingo buffet on Friday, 18th December, culminating with a New Year’s Eve Party – it’s a big house party, (no empty bottles to clear away the next morning) with your friends, neighbours and family! We make our own entertainment, bring our own ‘leftover turkey’ sandwiches, and alcohol beverages of our choice. But please book early, tables are already being reserved. Our alterations are moving forward; we can access both the Rees Hall and the Talbot Hall by means of a corridor. We are currently planning our new kitchen by knocking down three small rooms and building one big kitchen serving both halls. By the way, our Computer classes now extend to Friday mornings, for those who need to know about Microsoft Windows 10, as well as advice on tablets and i-pads. FEATURES H.M. Coastguard Porthcawl - Team News

Glamorgan Family History Update

On the 19th September we took part in the ‘barrel smuggle’ event which involved teams attempting to smuggle an empty barrel from the lifeboat station to the Prince of Wales in Maudlam. The event was organised to commemorate the sinking of the SS Cato in 1940 off Nash Point with its cargo of stout subsequently washing ashore along our coastline. This was an excellent day with good fun had by all and the money raised going to the RNLI. A week later we had a training exercise on water rescue at Porthcawl Marina with Coastguard teams from Chepstow, Penarth and Port Talbot also taking part. This involved practising with the use of equipment such as throw lines, flotation devices, tethered buoys along with techniques to safely rescue people from terrain such as the pier as this can be required in bad weather. Despite the reasonably good weather, the period from midSeptember to mid-October saw only a handful of callouts for us with mainly safety advice given. Tim Vincent, Station Officer

Life with Porthcawl Lions It is hard to believe that it is November already and that Porthcawl Lions Christmas events start later this month when Santa will be in his grotto on Saturday 28th November from 10am until 4pm. And this year he has a new grotto in the museum in John Street. He is really looking forward to meeting his young friends and giving out lots of lovely presents, so do go along and say hello. He will also be in his grotto, waiting for you, every Saturday in December up to Christmas. It is now time, too, to register online for the Boxing Day fun run, which starts and ends at the Hi-Tide. Full details and a registration form can be found on the Porthcawl Lions website: porthcawllions.org.uk. Alternatively you can turn up and register on the morning. There will also be the usual tea party and singsong for Porthcawl’s ‘senior residents’ so if you know any older, lonely who would enjoy an afternoon out please let the Lions know. Again, with Christmas in mind, Porthcawl Lions agreed to give a donation to the Christmas swim and also make an additional donation to the food bank in addition to the regular monthly donations and, to mark the end of Porthcawl RNLI’s special year the club also agreed a donation. Porthcawl Townswomens Guild News As I write this in the middle of October we are enjoying beautiful autumn weather – I hope it doesn’t go down hill from here! All our groups: craft, games, literary and luncheon club have met and some members enjoyed one of the popular Pavilion lunch time plays. At our October meeting we welcomed one new member and three visitors who we hope may soon join us! Members were reminded to bring articles for the Christmas Fayre on December 4th. This will be held in Trinity Church Hall and is in aid of the British Lung Foundation who will have a display table. It was our Harvest Tea so after some lovely and humorous readings from members and a Second World War sing-a-long we settled down to a delicious tea. Our next meeting is on the 11th November,2pm at All Saints Church Hall when we will have a Craft Afternoon with a demonstration of various crafts which we can all try our hand at! It should be fun so do come along - everyone welcome. Dorothy Thomas Tel 772157

FEATURES Russia Returning To Moon Over 40 years have passed since human beings walked on the moon, and all of them were American. Russia has plans to change that as the US turns its attention to Mars. Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, wants to set up a high-tech lunar base, complete with human habitats, scientific and technical laboratories, a launching and landing port for spacecraft, and even an astronomical observatory. During the Apollo-era space race, the former Soviet Union landed robotic rovers on the Moon --but a series of rocket failures and explosions halted progress on any man-carrying missions. Eventually, Roscosmos decided that its Moon programme was not worth the money and shut it down. Now Roscosmos is reviving that programme and thinking of sending a robotic spacecraft, called Luna 25, to the Moon to do some scouting for a future lunar base. The agency has announced that it will land Luna 25 at the Moon’s south pole in 2024. Engineers are already building the spacecraft, and the finished product will carry eight cameras. Roscosmos isn’t the only agency hinking about a return to the Moon. ESA has already announced plans for its own Moon colony. Clive Down Bridgend Astronomical Society

Porthcawl U3A Visit The Senedd

It was a brilliant sunny autumn day when the coach full of Porthcawl U3A members left for Cardiff. Dorothy Jones had worked her normal miracle of organising it and our visit to the seat of the Welsh Government. Coffee on arrival was followed by a tour of the Senedd with manager Richard acting as our guide and minder for the day. Sitting in the aerial chamber we were given an enthusiastic history and appraisal of the building, its functions, visitor’s protocol plus a question and answer session. The original Assembly building served lunch and an excellent display of Victorian pictures of Wales c1880s and I thanked my lucky stars I was not in any of them as life looked extremely harsh. Afternoon Question Time was the main event and we all watched as First Minister and our host for the day Carwyn Jones AM was verbally assaulted from all sides but survived unscathed which seems to be a characteristic of politicians. He later left the chamber to meet us and take important but more genteel questions from his constituents. The visit ended with a pleasant waterfront stroll in the sunshine until the coach arrived to complete an interesting and enjoyed day. Gary Victor

Porthcawl RNLI Fundraiser Irene Is Awarded Gold Thirty years of voluntary fundraising and dedication to the RNLI has resulted in Irene Williams being awarded the Gold Badge for her services to the charity. On holiday with husband John back in 1987 Irene visited the RNLI lifeboat station on the Isles of Scilly and was impressed with the station’s souvenir shop run by volunteers. Back home she set up a very humble display of souvenirs on a table outside Porthcawl’s small lifeboat station. In 1996 Irene’s dream took a huge step forward with the opening of the purpose built shop incorporated in the new RNLI station. Lifeboat Operation Manger, Philip Missen MBE said, ‘Over the years our shop has been one of the RNLI’s most successful and has raised several hundred thousand pounds for our charity. Chairman at Porthcawl, John Abraham, added, ‘Irene’s contribution to our charity also included many hours organising and showing people around on educational visits to the station. We are delighted that this award has been made in recognition of her dedication here in Porthcawl. Without fundraisers like Irene, lifeboats crews would not benefit from the first class equipment that they rely on when that call to launch is made’. Ian Stroud, Lifeboat Press Officer, Porthcawl

Porthcawl Inner Wheel News Dr Elizabeth Jones, a very special member of Inner Wheel, both nationally and internationally, has passed away. She was a much loved member of our Club and will be greatly missed. Rotarian Anne Jarrett, a supportive honorary member, has also died, a great loss to Rotary and Inner Wheel. Plans are being made to celebrate Christmas. In November Diana Richardson has arranged a club outing to the Christmas Market in Gloucester. The Christmas Tree Festival, arranged by Rotary and actively supported by Inner Wheel members, will be held in All Saints Church from November 30th to December 6th. District Chairman, Marian Curtis, attended our Club meeting in October. She spoke of the Inner Wheel being representative of women on the world stage. Inner Wheel is now the largest Women’s Organisation worldwide. Chairman Marian told us about her charity, Fair Share Cymru, which is helping to distribute food to people in need throughout South Wales. Irene Williams, a member of our Club, was presented with the R.N.L.I. Gold Award in October. We congratulate her on her achievement. The Sandville Help Centre and the R.N.L.I. are President Mary’s charities this year. Eileen Thomas Club Correspondent Seaside News | 31

You may require help in the future from someone to make decisions about your health, finances or property, at a time when you are unable to do so. If you want someone to be able to look after your affairs if you become incapable then you will need to appoint an attorney. A power of attorney (LPA) gives someone (your ‘attorney’) the power to make decisions on your behalf. You can prepare an LPA whenever you like, provided you have the mental capacity to understand what you are doing. However, the LPA does not take effect until it has been registered at the Court of Protection. There are two separate types of LPA: 1. Property and Financial Affairs. 2. Health and Welfare. The Property and Financial Affairs power of attorney, appoints an attorney to deal with your bank accounts, handling dayto-day finances, dealing with taxes and making gifts that you used to make (eg birthday presents to relatives) on your behalf. The Health and Welfare power of attorney, appoints an attorney to make decisions such as giving or refusing consent to particular medical treatments, being able to take decisions about ‘life-sustaining’ treatment, deciding whether you should continue living at home or move into a residential care home. Almost anyone over the age of 18, including your spouse, can be appointed as an attorney (though someone who is bankrupt cannot act as an attorney under a property and financial affairs LPA). An LPA can also appoint more than one attorney. If you choose to have an LPA with a single attorney, or attorneys who must act together, the LPA could cease to be effective if one attorney can no longer act (eg: if an attorney dies). You need to decide who you would like to act as your attorney, and check that they are willing to be appointed. We can prepare the LPA forms on your behalf to ensure you do not overlook any important issues and to ensure that it has the desired effect. The forms are then signed by you as the donor, the attorneys and certificate providers (who sign to confirm you have understood the implications of this). Natalie Thomas Associate

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Porthcawl WI

Sker WI News

We meet at All Saints Church Hall on the 4th Thursday of each month at 2pm. We are a small friendly group and give a warm welcome to all guests and prospective members. In September we had a talk from a volunteer from the Guide Dog Association. She brought along a very well behaved puppy that was being trained. Also, our members enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea at Llanerch Vineyard. In our next meeting in October, we are holding a Bring & Buy Sale. We will also have a talk on Christmas Traditions, to put us in the mood for all the Festive treats through November and December. This includes Christmas Shopping in Hereford, Children’s Carol Singing and a Christmas Lunch. Our WI has many activities planned for 2016. Why not come along and join us. Just ring Sue Strachan on 713124 for a friendly chat. Sue Strachan

The October meeting of Sker WI was held recently and President Nora Williams welcomed the members present and two visitors. To celebrate the Centenary of the WI in September 40 members enjoyed lunch at the Seagull. The speaker for the evening was Linda Feagan, with her dog Ruby, from The Dogs Trust. The Trust, which was formerly The National Canine Defence, was formed in 1891. The Trust has over 20 re-homing centres across the UK, which do an amazing job in looking after the dogs in their care. The dogs are checked thoroughly before they are found new homes. No healthy dogs are put to sleep and most are neutered before they leave a centre. In 2014 nearly 15,000 dogs were re-homed. We have a Fashion Show to look forward to and our Christmas Fayre at Trinity Church Hall on 27th November from 10-12 noon. There is also a trip to Llanelli House with some retail therapy in Carmarthen coming up in December. The next meeting is on 12th November at 7pm in St David’s Church Hall, Nottage. The speaker will be Ms Angela Gorman on ‘Working with African Mothers’. Anyone wishing to join us is very welcome. Ann Vipond

Mynydd Cynffig WI News Tuesday the 13th of October 2015 saw Mynydd Cynffig WI meeting in our usual venue The Talbot Centre in Kenfig Hill. Minutes were read and WI business discussed. We had a visitor from a neighbouring WI who had fetched her mother in law to our meeting to see what we were all about, as she lived in our area - she was 93 years young. It made me think of the reasons we had for joining the WI - making friends, catching up with old ones, learning new skills and supporting each other. Having the opportunity to stretch ourselves doing things we would not normally have tried. Listening to talks every month by people who are passionate about their subject, like the gentleman who gave us a talk on Welsh Homes of Distinction, who was informative. Hopefully the talk next month by Debra John, titled Edwardian Maid, will be as good. Our calendar leading up to Christmas is full, but our doors are always open. Call in, we would be glad to meet you, share the fun and friendship we enjoy as being members of one of the biggest women’s organisation in Great Briton. Also, we make a good cup of tea and we have biscuits! Christine Callaghan

Newton WI At our October meeting, after the usual WI business was attended to, we celebrated ‘Harvest Festival’ in style with a delicious fish and chip supper, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. On September 16th we celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the WI with a lovely buffet and entertainment provided by the talented Accordion Band’. The evening proved a great success with a little singing and dancing. Preparations are in hand for the Christmas Fayre’ to be held this year on November 14th at Newton Institute - a good opportunity to purchase your Christmas bargains. Our walking group had a lovely stroll along Aberavon Beach blustery weather but very invigorating, culminating at ‘Remo’s’ for lunch. Thanks to Shirley for organising. For more information on Newton WI please ring Pearl Mason on 772657. M Freeman Seaside News | 34

Laleston WI News Vice President Barbara Rees welcomed everyone, including two guests, to the October meeting. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. The members who represented Laleston WI in the Federation Quiz in September were congratulated on their efforts. Arrangements were made for this month’s Luncheon Club in the Caeffatri Inn and Book Club in the Library. Transport details were given for the Mark Evans evening in the Porthcawl Pavilion and the Federation Dinner with Owen Money in the Hi-Tide Inn. Names were taken for the Christmas Lunch on December 8th in the Atlantic Hotel and to end the business part of the evening the Calendars and Diaries for 2016 were sold. Barbara then introduced the guest speaker - Mr Alex Belojica who gave a very interesting talk on Norse Mythology and a vote of thanks was given by Elaine Jones. Refreshments followed and the meeting closed after the raffle was drawn - which was won by Maureen Morgan. The next meeting will be held on November 5th at 7.15pm in Blandy Hall (Laleston Gardening Club) when the topic of guest speaker Mr George Brady will be ‘Policing in Gibraltar’. Visitors warmly welcomed. For further information call Margaret on 01656 660384. Barbara Rees

Finance Critical illness cover provides a tax free lump sum if you are diagnosed with a specified serious illnesses. It is a one off payment that could be used to help repay your mortgage, liabilities or to make alterations to your home such as wheelchair access should you need it. Conditions covered could include heart attack, stroke, certain types and stages of cancer and conditions such as multiple sclerosis but you need to be aware that not all conditions are covered. Some policies may also include permanent disabilities as a result of injury or illness. Some policies may make a smaller payment for less severe conditions or if one of your children has one of the specified conditions. People typically purchase critical illness cover when they take on a major financial commitment. You might already have some cover included in other products or work benefits, however, if you don’t, State Benefits might not be enough to replace your income if something goes wrong. In this eventuality critical illness cover should be considered if you don’t have sufficient savings to tide you over if you become seriously ill or disabled, or you don’t have an employee benefits package to cover a longer time off work due to sickness. The good news is that medical advances mean more people than ever are surviving conditions that might have killed earlier generations. For example, more than 90% of men diagnosed with testicular cancer are still alive five years later, while more than 80% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have the same survival rate, according to the Office for National Statistics. If you’re not sure if this type of protection is suitable for you, or you’d like to discuss your options, please do not hesitate to contact us. A Tale Of Two Sons Meet David and Tony. Both are in their 50s, still working, have a mortgage still running and have various other things in common. I have changed their names to protect their identities. However, there’s one thing they have in common which also sees them poles apart in circumstances. Both of their widowed mothers were diagnosed as having lost mental capacity, Tony’s Mum with a severe stroke, David’s Mum with dementia. Sad circumstances, with a whole new set of issues to face – but that’s where the similarity ends. Around two years ago, David perceived a noticeable change in his mother generally and suggested she gave him Power of Attorney over her affairs, both financial and health-wise, just in case her health deteriorated, as indeed, her own mother’s once had. This was a very sensible move, since he is now able to look after his mother’s wellbeing in all ways, for the rest of her days. In Tony’s case, the news is less good. Neither he nor his mother had taken the necessary steps to put any Power of Attorney in place. They had discussed it on more than one occasion but just never found the time to get around to making it happen. Unfortunately it’s now too late, a classic case of getting things sorted before the worst happens. Tony must now take his mother’s case to the Court of Protection, with all the hassle and paper-filling process that Seaside News | 36

entails, as well as the high costs involved – at the time he least feels able to cope with it. Very often, we talk about certain matters, saying that ‘we’ll do it tomorrow’ or ‘it won’t happen to me, surely?‘ What these two cases show so clearly is that, any of us could be similarly affected by such issues, and without any warning of time or place. We all know that we will eventually pass away but we just don’t know when – it will happen, nevertheless, and making preparation for later years shows the utmost common sense. At Cambria Financial, we often assist Clients in such matters, providing guidance and assisting to facilitate the appropriate solution. Call me for an informal chat on 01656 782545 or 07768 418308 – it may be the best call you make today. Paul Fielding Cambria Financial 01656 782545

Pensions - How Confused Are You? Taking advice around your retirement option are essential in order to maximise the quality of your retirement. Consumers will often move money from one bank to another due to one having a better rate of interest than the other, yet consumers seem reluctant to seek alternatives when it comes to their pension. Much of this is to do with Pensions for many being too complex and confusing. That is why getting advice is not only important it is essential. At Bartholomew Hawkins we not only will provide you with an initial consultation free of charge, but also a report outlining all of your options and our recommendations. Our sole belief is that we should add real value to your situation – not a layer of unnecessary charges. This is what one of our clients recently said in a testimonial “Bartholomew Hawkins have helped me understand some complex areas of pension and investment advice. Leaving the reports with me to look over in my own time. I feel very trusting in what they recommend.” With over 200 years of experience we are certainly more than able and willing to help in dealing with your individual needs. CST Wealth Management CST Wealth provides tailored wealth management service for every client we work with. Whilst we provide short-term solutions our skills are best used as part of a long term partnership built on trust, integrity and excellent client care. We link the following as part of your financial plan: *Asset and cash management *Tax guidance and compliance *Cash flow analysis *Family protection and disaster planning *Setting up tax efficient investment structures *Building your pension fund for retirement New Pension Freedom Using the new pension’s freedom introduced in the 2015 Budget to your advantage could make a big difference to your financial wellbeing in retirement. Taking the wrong steps could also prove costly, for you and for your family. Since April 6, those of you saving for your retirement are now able for the first time to pass on your pension pot, potentially tax-free, to anybody they want after you die. This creates the opportunity for a pension to be an increasingly important part of financial planning. For some people it could now be more efficient to live off assets such as savings accounts and ISAs that would be liable for inheritance tax, before withdrawing money from their own pension. Our case studies demonstrate how we can help protect your family and save for a comfortable retirement www.cstwealth.co.uk/case-studies Gwyn Williams, Director 01656 867167

Birdwatch: Starlings

Laleston Gardening Club

Starlings have iridescent purple/metallic green plumage with small white spots. In flight their wings are triangular in shape, and they fly fast and straight with quick wing-beats followed by short wing closures and the occasional glide. On the ground they have a confident walk, often stopping along the grass to probe the ground for insect larvae. Starlings coming in to roost are a sight not to be missed. Small flocks join with other flocks until there are many thousands of birds performing mesmerising aerial displays.

Remember, remember the 5th of November. There’s lots happening this month before Christmas. There will be a Mince Pie and Coffee Morning at Cliff Cottage on Saturday November 7th with craft stalls, including hand-made Christmas Cards, also a preserve stall with homemade jams , pickles etc. As we seem to have had summer at last, jobs in the garden usually sorted in October have been delayed. We are still harvesting cucumbers and some tomatoes. Soon the greenhouse will have to be cleared and cleaned, ready to start all over again. Lupin plants put in the border for next spring are flowering, these are plants brought on with seeds saved from original, there are lilies also flowering for the second time, like us the plants are making the most of this lovely weather. The lawns still need to be cut as the grass is still growing strong. Remember if you have a bonfire for Guy Fawkes to check that there are no hedgehogs or other hibernating small animals cwtched in before you light up. We are now online at: www.lalestongardenclub.co.uk where any info about the club will be available. Gwen Bradford

BTO Garden BirdWatch data show that the reporting rate of Starlings increases dramatically during winter months due to an influx of migrants from Europe. Conservation status: RED (of high conservation concern) due to long term decline. A BTO Garden BirdWatch subscription makes the perfect Christmas gift! Celtic Chemicals - Pressure Washer Hire It’s ‘that time of year’ again, the leaves are falling, blocking drains and breaking down into slippery patches just waiting for someone to walk over. Algae, made worse from the damp summer, are also showing up in various places around the outside of our homes. What can you do about this – well a pressure washer is an excellent tool for removing these dangers and unsightly green patches. By hiring a pressure washer to use yourself, gives you the benefit of controlling how, where and when it is used. Celtic Chemicals is a local, long established supplier of cleaning materials and we have the experience to match you with the correct machine for your needs. All the machines we hire - from cold water, light-weight pressure washers to large industrial hot machines, are new, safe and reliable. If this is a new experience for you, we give onsite training when we deliver the machine to your premises. Give us a call for more information on our very competitive rates and for all new and returning customers quote the reference PW115 for a £10 discount off your next hire. The lovely Chrysanthemum is the flower of November; keep them free of weeds this month especially chickweed, which hosts pests that are harmful to Chrysanthemums! Once they have finished flowering cut down to 6” from the soil this will encourage base growth for lots more next year! Get your tulip bulbs in before the end of the month, try planting them in pots so that they can be planted out, pots and all, in any part of the garden that lacks a bit of colour in the spring! Time to dig over the vegetable plot- yippee! Get those muscles flexing, cutting down spent crops, if you have access to manure, now is the time to spread it over your vegetable beds to rot down over the winter. Lift parsnips after the first frost (due any time!) when their flavour will be sweetened. Did you know Britons eat more Brussel sprouts than anyone in else in Europe. The area of Brussel sprout fields in the UK is equivalent to 3,240 football pitches – wow! We have a quiz on November 24th 7.30pm in the Green Hall, bring your own nibbles and drink, come and pit your wits against the eggheads of Cefn! Chris Early

Health Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

Skincare & Coconut Oil

People who really know about health also know about extra virgin coconut oil. It’s the oil of choice for health-conscious people, and it’s used in everything from smoothies to personal care products. You can use coconut oil both inside and outside your body. Coconut oil has a surprisingly long shelf life - up to several years on the shelf due to its ability to naturally resist oxidation. When stored in the refrigerator, it is naturally a solid. When warmed in ambient room temperature, it becomes a liquid. Try replacing your current cooking oil with our coconut oil. It naturally resists creating high-heat carcinogens, meaning you can cook with it at higher temperatures without poisoning your food as often happens with corn oil, soybean oil or other cheap, low-end vegetable oils. Coconut Oil & Coconut Water are hot topics at the moment, they are becoming more readily available in the shops and the cost is coming down so that there is more chance of it being a staple item in your shopping basket. Aldi are now selling Vitae Coco coconut water for £1.99 and on a regular basis, what a bargain compared to other well known supermarkets! Coconut oil is an excellent massage oil for the skin as well. It acts as an effective moisturizer on all types of skin, including dry skin. The benefit of coconut oil on the skin is comparable to that of mineral oil. Fortunately, unlike mineral oil, there is no chance of having any adverse side effects on the skin from the application of coconut oil. Coconut oil is therefore a safe solution for the prevention of dry and flaky skin. It also delays the appearance of wrinkles and sagging of skin which normally accompany aging. Coconut oil also helps in treating various skin problems including psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and other skin infections. For that exact reason, coconut oil forms the base ingredient of various body care products like soaps, lotions, and creams that are used for skin care. Coconut oil also helps in preventing premature aging and degenerative diseases due to its well-known antioxidant properties. Mandy Davies Vale Laser Clinic Tel: 01443 223353 mandy@valelaser.co.uk

Essential Winter Foot Care - Top Tips With winter approaching bringing freezing temperatures, it is important to look after your feet. After all, you’ll want them to be healthy and ready for action once again when spring finally arrives! Here are some ‘top tips’ to help you through the winter: * Dry your feet thoroughly after washing them, especially between the toes. Damp feet are a breeding ground for conditions like fungal nail infections and athlete’s foot. * Try to keep to a regular moisturising routine, particularly after showers/baths or at bedtime to help prevent dry, cracked skin on the heels. * Natural fibres are best for winter feet! 100% wool or two layers of cotton socks are fantastic at trapping a layer of heat, keeping your feet warm, preventing chilblains and cracked heels. * If you have to sit still for a long time this winter, periodically rotate and stretch your feet at the ankles to improve blood flow. * Regular checks with a Foot Health Professional will provide the required foot care and advice needed to maintain healthy feet. POEMS Mallards Reach?

The houses are going up quickly But I feel a little bemused That ‘Mallards Reach’ is the name someone chose And it’s made me a wee bit confused! It’s the little word ‘reach’ that’s the puzzle And it’s made this poor pensioner frown For - coming after the name of the duck – Is it a verb or a noun? Now, if it’s a verb, I’d just like to know What or where the Mallards are reaching; But if it’s a noun, then I’ll need to recall A fact that I learned from my teaching. Apostrophes, I know, can be awkward But, if I may be permitted, May I remind you they’re used for possession Or in place of a letter omitted? So, if ‘reach’ is a noun, is there one duck or more That will find the reach further upstream? A well-placed apostrophe will show me the answer And light up my eyes with a gleam! Ivor Williams Porthcawl

Farewell To Ruby

Wrought in the bowels of eternity From the heart of God you came A jewel fair for all to see And Ruby was your name Firstborn, so many little ones Soon looked to you for care Your mother-heart was plain to see E’er your own were nurtured there As lapidary’s skill is used Pain is now merged with joy To cut and shape a jewel rare God does such means employ Sadly we bid our last farewells Dear sister, mother, friend We know you’re hid with Christ in God Still safe in the palm of his hand Pauline Lewis Porthcawl

Exacterly

I like roses – although their prickerly I like onions –in jars all picklerly I like streams – all wet and trickerly I like you -you’re cute! I want ice cream –its soft and lickerty I want jam–bright red and stickerty I want shoes – high heels go clickerty I want you- you’re lush! I love ponies – all clip and clopperty I love rabbits – all bounce and floppertyI I love corn – all sweet and popperty I love you-you’re fab! Chris Early, Cefn Cribwr Seaside News | 44

The Whispers From The Shadows

I hear whispers from the shadows, Those passed over from generations before, Some through pain and suffering, In lands so deep with war. You can feel the heartache, From the suffering of old, In buildings built upon land, Where many people died upon, feels cold. The pain through years of torture, Lack of food grown upon the land, Killed just to take these produce away, Because this was all unplanned. The whispers from the shadows, In languages I shouldn’t understand, Translated by Spiritual forefathers for me, So we have this information to hand. David Boyce Brackla , Bridgend

Autumn

Our summer has gone and Autumn is here A beautiful time of the year, The woodlands glow with bronze and brown This beauty shared by all around, The acorns fall from oak trees tall Our furry friends will have a ball, They gather the acorns to fill their store This food for winter they’ll need for sure, They look to find a nice warm place Where they for months will hibernate, The wild geese fly in V formation As they fly away for winter duration, The birds migrate and fly away It’s too cold here for them to stay, The trees shed their beautiful leaves they fall gently to the ground Making a carpet of colour all around, The Autumn moon is big and bright Lighting up the darkness of the night, The shining stars compliment the beauty of the sky The likes of which you cannot buy, As summer bids it’s sad adieu We look towards a season new, When winter comes bringing snow and rain We look forward to Spring and Summer once again. Basil Walters Cefn Glas, Bridgend

An Ode Too A Generous Friend

In the meadow you stand with your feet neatly crossed And your arms out-stretched to the sky. You clasp the warmth of the sun to your breast And wave as the winds pass by. All through the year you strive to appear Majestic, sturdy and bold You look serene in your springtime green And endure the winters cold. There are creatures waiting to harm you To satisfy their greed But most are truly grateful When you offer them what you need. You attract and nurture many lives, The lambs frisk around you, unafraid, The birds seek refuge on your branches And the cattle rest in their shade. There are times when you feel encumbered With branches growing heavy and hard. And craftsmen seek to create beauty From the timber you readily discard. The winds might bear family tidings From the off-spring of trees long gone Those which like you, stood with dignity Worthy of being gazed upon. It is said that one helped an outlaw Whether legendary or true And sitting beneath its branches He planned the deeds he dared to do. Another was honoured by a king in battle And it saved him in his flight Its mantle of leaves shielding him from his foe Through most of the day and the night. If a young tree feels very nervous On its journey along life’s way, It can turn to you for guidance And calm its fear of going astray. So benevolent tree, your presence I admire, Standing vigilant and caring as you do. To continue thus and remain steadfast, Is my earnest desire for you. Joan Pardoe Porthcawl

Arts Bridgend Male Choir Roundup

Successful Choir Rugby World Cup 2015 associations with the charity, Shine Cymru benefitting from Phil Steele’s Rugby World Cup at Cardiff; a visit to the Tiger’s Fan Zone at Leicester’s Welford Road HQ and more locally at Bridgend Athletic RFC Clubhouse when they hosted Tokyo team, Superman RFC led the choristers into more traditional activities. A visit to Tabernacle Welsh Congregational Church for its Annual Concert was considered a huge success, the variety enhanced with Eisteddfod winning soprano, Ellen Williams and Choir music team members Scott Williams with his organ solo and Rhiannon Williams-Hale and Ryan Wood with a piano duet. Bridgend Male Choir is currently recording its latest CD to be released in time for Christmas. Keep an eye on the Choir website for details www. bridgendmalechoir.co.uk Choristers will be out in force for Bridgend Male Choir’s invite to the town’s Remembrance Service at the Cenotaph on 8th November and for a visit to Pembroke Comprehensive School on the 13th in a concert for Pembroke Lions which will also feature the school choir. The next local concert is the Friendship Concert at St Mary’s Catholic Church, Bridgend on 4th December, also featuring St Mary’s Catholic School Choir. The BMC content will include songs from the CD and appropriate Christmas items. Tickets available from the Church. David T Burt

Porthcawl Male Choir News

At the invitation of Mr Dave Jones of the Hi-Tide, the choir entertained guests at the two marquees set up in the club’s car park for visitors attending this year’s Elvis Festival. The choir has a number of Elvis songs in its extensive repertoire but has never before performed at this event, which attracts such a large number of his fans. There was a slight feeling of trepidation as to how the fans, who come from all over the country, would react to a Welsh male voice choir singing the songs of their hero. This concern turned out to be totally unfounded. The fans reaction at the two performances given by the choir was fantastic, they genuinely appreciated both performances and showed their appreciation with resounding applause. John Owen Jones has agreed to be the guest performer at next year’s annual concert, for which we are already started rehearsing. John Williams

Arts A Film Maker’s Point Of View

One of the reasons why I have persisted in shooting film whilst the rest of the world has been increasingly embracing digital technology is that, quite simply, I prefer the film look – an intangible quality that puts it, in my view, head and shoulders above electronic imagery. But it is becoming ever more apparent that digital images may not survive in the long term – an information ‘black hole’ is being predicted because as technology changes, the means may not be there in the future to view pictures retained on CD discs and SD cards. You might scoff at the idea, but I have one of my early film productions copied onto 1-inch ‘C’ format videotape, and I don’t think there are many machines around these days, if any, that run the old 1980s format, and what happened to high-band and low-band U-matic? I am presently sorting through several dozen rolls of 16mm film shot between the 1930s and 1950s for my Penarth film production, and because much of it exists on negative, it is potentially as good as new. For those of you who are interested in the future of film, look up www.savefilm.org, or contact me to give me your opinions. Pyle & Porthcawl Photographic Society Our membership is still increasing and is now at an all-time high for this early in the season. We have had some great presentations so far, including a world class Nature presentation by BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year judge, Paul Harcourt Davies. We also held our annual Chairman’s Trophy Competition, which was only open to images taken during a club evening or field trip. The competition, as the name suggests, is judged by our Chairman, Glyn Edmunds and the well-deserved winner was ‘Fetch’ by Geoff Baker. We also won our annual 3-way competition for the second year running with Aberdare and Old Bridge, Pontypridd clubs. We have a full programme lined up for the coming season, including presentations, competitions and practical evenings. Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk or contact Glyn Edmunds on 01656 772831 for more information. We welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, so if you have an interest in photography, come and join us on Thursday evenings at 7.30pm in the Glamorgan Holiday Hotel. Stag’s World of Rock New Bridgend prog band Last Flight To Pluto release their debut album ‘See You At The End’ and it is available on iTunes. The project is fronted by vocalist Alice Freya who co-wrote all the songs. The track ‘Red Pill’ is brilliant, and check out the album sampler on YouTube and on www.lastflighttopluto.com. On the Elvis Festival weekend I wound up instead at the Elvisfree zone, the Porthcawl Hotel lounge bar, to catch the Cover Sluts. The place was crammed as it always is for their gigs and hotel owner and ex-rugby star Phil Booth made them play an extra set, saying: “They’re the best band in South Wales!” Sad to hear that the Alarm’s Mike Peters’ cancer has returned for a third time. Our careers from ’78 had a similar trajectory after his band supported mine. They went on to sell 5 million albums and I sold 4 (records, that is!) I wish Mike a speedy recovery. Finally, there’s a Steve Strange Tribute Concert in Cardiff Millenium Centre on 22nd November with Boy George. It’s raising money for the Steve Strange Statue Appeal, which will be erected in Porthcawl. Sport Tap It Out CC 7 club members took on the Welsh Iron Man in September, and what a fantastic achievement to have finished this grueling event. The amount of training these members have to put in is extraordinary and each one is a credit to the club. So I take this opportunity to say, you are an IRONMAN to you all. Daniel Palmer 14hrs 57min. Richard Webster 13 hrs 13mins, Julie Webster 13hrs 36mins (pb). Kerrith Ashby 14hrs 33mins, Jason Murphy 16hrs 10mins, Teifon Thomas 12hrs 35mins and Richard Wintle 13hrs 51mins. The Welsh National Crit Road Race was also held in Porthcawl, organized by club member Dai Lloyd and what a fantastic event and day of racing we were given. Thank you Dai. Club juniors Laurence Hunt and Finley Morgan had their first races and both really enjoyed the experience. Club rides are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. All new members welcome so any questions please contact me on nickemorgan@hotmail. co.uk. Stay safe and KEEP ON TAPPING. Nicky Morgan

Porthcawl RFC U7’s

Since the last issue the boys have played three additional fixtures. All have been excellent results where we have outscored all our oppositions in each game. Matches have been played against Bridgend Athletic, Ystrad Rhondda and Kenfig Hill. In the four matches to date the boys have amazingly scored 76 tries and only conceded 23. What is most pleasing however is how we are scoring these tries, with such a talented group of under 7’s we have been encouraging passing along the line and scoring in space, not just passing when we get tagged. So far every opposition coach has praised our boys for the way we play the game. As coaches, we are extremely excited to think how much more the boys will progress as they get older by gaining more experience and developing better game understanding. With the Wales rugby team being so injury hit, we are preparing our boys for a call up! And finally a special thank you to Peter Alan for sponsoring our shirts and for Bartholomew Hawkins for sponsoring our training tops. Geraint Evans

Rest Bay Nippers

Porthcawl Lifeguards News

Another beach season over with - and what a fantastic year again for the nippers! We didn’t have good summer weather, but that didn’t stop us having great fun. Onwards now with winter training ready for the Welsh Still Waters in the new year, and with presentation night to look forward to in November. Anyone who would like any information on the nipper section at Rest Bay S.L.S.C please contact: Chris Howells chris.howells5@btinternet.com

Porthcawl Lifeguards juniors finished their competition season with an outstanding third place overall finish at Rhoose Lifeguards Junior Carnival at Barry Island on the last weekend in September. This result was gained due to a lot of hard training through the season and contained many great individual performances, but overall a brilliant team effort, which will give us great confidence for next season. Beach training at the club will finish on the first weekend in November and resume next March. This will give everybody a good break after a very busy season but also allow us time to carry out essential maintenance on the club building during the winter. Training will continue at Pyle Pool every Friday throughout the year allowing us to maintain fitness till spring. If anyone is interested in joining the club, especially nippers aged 7-12 please take a look at our website: porthcawlifeguards.co.uk Andrew Barnes
