LETTERS THANK YOU TO THE COMMUNITY Dear Sir/Madam, We would like, through the medium of Seaside News, thank everyone for their help and donations to the shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse. • Thanks to the community hub at Gilgal for beautifully made toys, dolls and linen school bags for girls. • Thanks to Nottage Primary schoolchildren and helpers for many well-filled boxes. • Thanks to Sker WI Ladies Craft for an array of headgear, gloves and small toys. • Thanks to friends at Margam Village – bringing over 30 boxes – bulging to the brim with so many hats. • Thanks to the many kind people who left carrier bags of stationery, cuddly toys and toiletries on my doorstep. • Thanks to the many who simply donated money to help with transport costs. • Thanks to Michael for all his energy to box and load them all. We’ve also been given several bags of wool – so yes, next year we will do it all again! The truck came from Cardiff on Sunday 23rd Nov to Gilgal to collect the boxes, and we are delighted to say that over 400 Christmas boxes were sent……and as the gentleman collecting them said, “That’s at least 400+ smiling children!”. God bless them all. With sincere thanks, Linda, Val & Vera

PROPERTY WHY JANUARY CAN BE A SURPRISINGLY STRONG MONTH TO SELL A HOME! The start of the year is traditionally a period of reset, and the property market is no exception. Once the Christmas break is over and people return to their routines, many begin to browse property portals for inspiration about their next move. While spring is often viewed as the prime selling season, there are several reasons why January can, in fact, be an advantageous time to bring a home to market. One of the most significant benefits is reduced competition. Compared with the busier months of March, April and May, January typically sees fewer new listings. This quieter backdrop can help properties stand out more easily, particularly when buyers have a smaller pool of options to choose from. Those who are browsing at this time of year often fall into the category of motivated buyers—individuals facing job relocations, changes in family circumstances, or other pressing reasons to move. As a result, winter viewings can attract purchasers who are ready to make decisions and proceed efficiently. The mindset shift that accompanies the New Year also plays a role. For many, January represents a clean slate and an opportunity to plan for the months ahead. This psychological “fresh start” can drive people to make big life changes, including moving home. Despite the common belief that homes are best presented in spring sunshine, winter brings its own advantages. A well-staged property can feel especially

inviting during the colder months. Thoughtful lighting and warm décor help create a sense of comfort and refuge—an atmosphere that can be appealing when the weather outside is less forgiving. There is also the potential for a smoother process. Although not guaranteed and dependent on individual circumstances, the manic rush that mortgage lenders and conveyancers were battling with in December to complete before Christmas is over. Historical trends show that some strong sales occur in the early part of the year, particularly in January, February and March. While every seller’s situation is different, January can offer an opportunity to reach a committed audience before the market becomes more saturated in spring and summer. For homeowners weighing up the timing of their sale, considering the advantages of the early New Year market may provide a useful alternative to the traditional spring launch. For more information or to discuss any aspect of the housing market, contact McHattons Estate Agents on 01656 331577, email us at enquiries@mchattons.co.uk, or visit your local high street branch. BOOKS BOOK OF THE MONTH 59 MINUTES - HOLLY SEDDON

NEW BOOKS AT PORTHCAWL LIBRARY

If you knew you had fifty-nine minutes until everything and everyone you love would be lost forever, what would you do with that time? It’s an ordinary evening. People are coming home from work, cooking dinner for their children, cuddling on sofas with their lovers. And then the message arrives, shattering everyone’s worlds: Missiles are set to destroy England in fiftynine minutes. Everyone should seek immediate shelter. 59 minutes follows the journey of three women trying to make it home to and protect their families. The journeys should be simple, but with a lost schoolchild seeking help, a teenage daughter suddenly going missing, and dangerous criminals on the prowl, there is peril at every corner.

POEMS PORTHCAWL HOWL I saw the best souls of Porthcawl alive in the salt-bitten dawn, wind-lashed hair and laughter rising with the gulls above Rest Bay, sunburned, hungover, running, walking, limping toward the tide like pilgrims searching for something older than prayer. They howled joy across the promenade, past the blue railings and chippy queues, where vinegar steam mingles with the sea’s wild breath. I saw them dance under neon lights outside The Harbour Bar, or half asleep in doorways after too many pints in the Ancient Briton, telling stories of rugby victories that only get bigger every retelling. I saw the young ones skate the ramps of the Goedwig, eyes wild with the electricity of not being grown yet, boards smacking rhythm against concrete like restless hearts that refuse to slow down. I saw the old ones — steel-spined, weather-proofed — walking dogs along Coney Beach, staring out to the horizon like it still holds an answer they’re not done asking for. I heard the laughter echo down New Road, down Esplanade, down John Street with its coffee shops and fish counters and gossip woven thick as winter scarves. I saw lovers kiss outside the Pavilion, where music ghosts still dance, and the stage remembers every trembling debut and triumph. I saw storms hammer the shore, waves rising like roaring ancient gods trying to reclaim something we stole — and still the people stood there faces toward the chaos, laughing, fearless, alive. O Porthcawl — you stubborn, glorious, salt-sweet town, built of tides and memory and grit and song. Your people stride forward with weatherproof hearts, full of fire and daffodils and jokes only Wales understands. And when the sun sinks into the edge of the world beyond the pitch-black silhouette of Ogmore and Southerndown cliffs, the moon will rise over the lighthouse and whisper: 22 | seaside news

This place remembers you. This place is part sea, part sky, and part unstoppable soul. And the people — blessed mad beautiful people — will howl back: We are Porthcawl. And we are not finished yet. Wilfy Edwards, Porthcawl

FOOTSTEPS

BIRDSONG What is this dawn chorus you’re singing as light begins a new day? Each chirp is a perfect staccato that crescendos over the bay. Are you all singing off the same hymn sheet? Or is Karaoke your style? Whatever it is you are singing, it’s certainly making me smile! Do your verses rhyme like a poem? Do you beat a heavy refrain? All I know is the music I’m hearing, needs playing again and again! Rippling notes, a trill and some whistling, each cadence descends from your tree. Flute-like notes that warble and chatter, like a brook babbling on to the sea!

Footsteps in the snow A sound to love I know Another season is complete And still the sound of his feet Footsteps in the rain A feeling of no pain Spring has come and gone And still we are one

And who is conducting your birdsong, marking your time to the beats, interpreting your signals and gestures, shaping your notes and your tweets? Symphony, Aria, Sonata, I hear your melodies soar. Harmonies that blend nicely together, tracking your invisible score.

Footsteps in the sun Walking and then run Feelings of utter joy He is still my boy Footsteps in the leaves Everything he sees Another year has past Loving life at last Footsteps in the snow One less footprint though This was one fight he couldn’t win He left his footprint and finally gave in Kevin Bywater, Porthcawl

Are you calling your flock to a meeting, like the church bell that’s tolling to call parishioners to hear divine message, to remind them that God loves them all. Even though I’ll never identify your clear and confident voice, your low-pitched song is so beautiful it beckons me in to rejoice. Have you ever had a best seller, or made it to the top of the charts? Won an Emmy, a Grammy, a music award? Been honoured for work in the Arts? Or perhaps you’re just singing a lovesong, enticing your mate to make nest. Dove, pigeon, blue-tit or robin, feathered friends, your song’s simply the best! Verne Farrugia, Porthcawl

FESTIVE EXCESS

JUST TWO WORDS

THE RED PILL

Farewell to Christmas 2025 and refrains of auld lang syne, we have stuffed our way through the turkey and drank our own body weight in wine. Now all that’s left in the cake tin is a collection of currants and crumbs, over consumption quite evident on our widening hips and tums. Festivities pass in a haze of excesses there’s far more of us than before, we shall soon need to buy bigger dresses as our stomachs are still craving more. A mass of food purchased just for one week filling fridges and emptying the purse, creating mountains of waste, it’s appalling, not sustainable.... and it’s a curse. Time to end this crazy indulgence, resolutions should immediately start, if not for our own bank balance more importantly...for our poor heart. Don’t buy so much next Christmas, it’s too late once it’s been bought, think of those who have so little whose needs often count for nought. Maybe, set an extra place for dinner for someone truly in need, it costs nothing but for the kindest thought and just one extra mouth to feed. Catherine Millard Payne, Bridgend

Every morning when you wake up say thank you… For the opportunity to get back on track with the diet or an addiction, For the possibility to ease the guilt that has built up over time, For the chance to right a wrong, For the time to catch up with a friend or member of the family, For the moment to appreciate the world in which we live, For being allowed to take that first step to being a better person, For simply being alive, For tomorrow never really does come and you know this… Marilyn Cook, Bridgend

My Name is Not Neo, But I Know Kung Fu I could have taken the blue pill and been happy. Her name was Anna Maria, she was Mexican American, and very beautiful. We could have got married and made lots of little beautiful brown eyed children who all voted for Donald But instead, and I don’t know why, I didn’t stay in the USA, and I jumped on a ‘plane and came to Britain. There was no Anna Maria there, but I learned to think, and without realising it I had taken Greg Lord, Porthcawl

JANUARY BLUES The bite of January chills our bones and we dream of warmer climes. The dank air penetrates ev’ry breath. and noses compete to outshine. With extra layers, scarfs and gloves, we’ve more padding than some chairs. It never fails to amaze— how the cold seeps everywhere! Decorations once stowed away, will leave the house quiet and yet— Laughter still echoes in my head. joy I will never forget— Of faces beaming, gifts unwrapped, age-old rituals we can’t ignore, Will be enough to keep me warm, ‘Til Spring awakes once more. FOOTPRINTS

I SAW YOUR HEART

DREAMS

We arrive and we depart with nothing. Like footprints in the sand washed away by the incoming tide. Sometimes our stay is short, so short that we have no time to leave any mark. Sometimes it may seem long but marked against the history of this great planet it is miniscule. Some people make a difference and are remembered long after their time has passed while others fade into instant oblivion. Some are born with incredible advantages yet still achieve nothing whilst others rise from poverty to greatness. Many are remembered for the benefits they bring, benefits that serve to help all mankind. Others trail sorrow and despair in their wake and remain despised long after their shadow has been extinguished. We live and die, we love and we hate, but breathing is never the same as living and every life eventually ends in the same way. There are no pockets in shrouds, and noone gets a second chance So, we must make every second count and ensure that our footprints remain long after the wind has spread and swept away our dust. So, live each day and cherish each moment, never stop learning, always give rather than take and pass on those precious memories and golden moments so that YOUR footprints survive the incoming tide and your love and wisdom live on. John Coutanche, Porthcawl

Raining hard, lost my coat, soaking wet and cold Heard a voice, saw a hand: a brolly for me to hold Not a glance, not a touch, but felt your embrace And I saw your heart before I saw your face

I search through the crowd, and I make out your face, And all else fades away as you give me that smile. Because nothing matters except being with you, Just sharing such moments makes my whole life worthwhile. I reach out and kiss you, place my arms round your waist, Then we stroll off together, all the time in the world. Just a pair of young lovers, no worries no cares, Our love like a blanket, brand new and unfurled. I kneel down beside you and you give me your hand, Our bodies united so your heart must be mine. As I slip on the ring and wipe the tears from your eyes, All my prayers have been answered; our love is divine. I turn and watch you as you walk up the aisle, A day to remember, our future’s set out. You’re standing there smiling as I recite my vows, A love that’s forever of that there’s no doubt. Then I awake to a new day and reach for your hand. But there’s no-one beside me, just a dark and cold space. I make my way to the bathroom to begin a new day, And the loneliness hits me like a punch in the face. For you’re there in my dreams but our time has now passed, The years slipped away and my cupboard is bare. I see you at night but can touch you no more, All that’s left is the memories of the good times we shared. John Coutanche, Porthcawl

Busy road, busy day, I’m walking fast Stepping out, speedy car, then it zoomed on past Heard a shout, felt a hand, pushed me out of place And I saw your heart before I saw your face Love can strike when you’re not looking for it Life can take you by the hand The greatest things are often not what you planned When I’m ill, when I’m stressed, when I’m feeling down Will you care, will you share, will you be around? Can I know that to my side you’ll race Now I saw your heart before I saw your face? Beauty’s fleeting, so they say Only skin deep, not made to stay But if you look beneath the skin True beauty is found within Love that lasts, love that’s real: it’s not a trend It runs deep from inside, means you’ve got a friend What we have, it can’t be replaced ‘Cos I saw your heart before I saw your face When I’m ill, when I’m stressed, when I’m feeling down I know you’ll care that you’ll share, that you’ll be around And I know that to my side you’ll race ‘Cos I saw your heart before I saw your face Greg Lord, Porthcawl

every ward and to areas like the promenade for the first time in decades. This is a new scheme, in partnership with BCBC which aims to grow year on year. So if you have any ideas of how we can bring more lights into more areas next year, please email info@ porthcawltowncouncil. gov.uk and we will add your potential ideas to the feasibility plan.

Regeneration & Refurbishment BCBC are now considering your feedback to the Porthcawl Waterfront Regeneration Masterplan which was launched on 4th November 2025. We have been listening to your views and will be submitting our own report to BCBC, passing your feedback before the full planning process commences. Whilst some strong opinions remain, there appears to be a lot of positivity for the latest plans, and perhaps now is the time for compromise. The John St Toilets Project is at the final stage of sign-off and will be advertised for tender. We look forward to bringing you a full project plan with timeline so that you can follow the restoration journey of this well-loved local treasure. There is a slight delay with the renovation of the shelter on West Drive due to finding a suitable contractor to meet the specialist needs. We will continue to keep you up to date on the process. The Butterfly Project in the north area of the Wilderness is well under way, with landscape work commenced and creative workshops with pupils from Porthcawl Primary School taking place over the coming months. There has been a slight misunderstanding with this project, but we look forward to ensuring that this area is safe for nature and people, and that biodiversity is increased for future generations.

Other news/ Newyddion arall I am pleased to report that council is considering not to increase the precept for 2026-27 and the final budget will come to full council in January 2026.

NEWS DON’T MISS OUT ON SUPPORT! First, I’d like to wish everyone a happy New Year. As we step into 2026, many are feeling the strain of colder weather, everyday costs and bills. That’s why I’ve teamed up with Policy in Practice to help ensure that no one in our communities misses out on the support they’re entitled to. Research from Policy In Practice shows that around £70 million in Neath Port Talbot and £60 million in Bridgend is going unclaimed every year. This includes vital support such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Carer’s Allowance, Housing Benefit and Child Benefit, as well as water social tariffs, broadband support, the Warm Homes Discount and free TV licences. Too many people simply don’t know this help is available. To make things easier, Policy in Practice offers the Better Off Calculator—a simple, confidential tool that shows what benefits and financial support you may be eligible for, including local and national schemes that can make a real difference. You can access the Calculator here: https://stephenkinnock.co.uk/better-off-calculator/ Just enter your details, and the Calculator will guide you through what support could be available. As your MP for Aberafan Maesteg, I’m here to help—please get in touch if you need support. STEPHEN KINNOCK MP for Aberafan Maesteg www.stephenkinnock.co.uk/contact/

FINDING A NEW CAREER IN 2026 I hope you all enjoyed a peaceful Christmas and Happy New Year. If one of your resolutions includes finding a new job, vacancies are available within Bridgend County Borough Council’s social care teams for anyone who has the right values, and is positive, caring and motivated. Full training and support are provided along with a social work apprentice scheme and opportunities for gaining new skills, including a funded degree course, so why not find out more by visiting our social care vacancy pages at www.bridgend.gov.uk? In other news, I would like to thank the residents and businesses who helped and supported the recent Christmas Kitchen appeal, which provided more than 1,000 vulnerable people with dinner, gifts and festive treats. As always, my fellow volunteers and I were truly touched by the generous donations of food, drink, gifts and more that we received. It all went to good use and ensured that vulnerable people all around Bridgend County Borough who were lonely or struggling could enjoy a merry Christmas. None of it would have been possible without the support of our army of volunteers who worked tirelessly out of Talbot Community Centre to make the event such a success – now let’s make Christmas 2026 even better! DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CITIZENSHIP AWARD? Happy new year, everybody. As we make our way through January, I would like to begin 2026 by once again reminding readers that there is still plenty of time to nominate someone who you think has gone the extra mile in improving their local community for a Mayor’s Citizenship Award. Designed to celebrate the achievements of individuals, groups and organisations that have made an outstanding contribution to life in Bridgend County Borough, previous winners have ranged from an electrician who has given his time and expertise for free to install defibrillators across the Llynfi Valley, a dedicated youth club volunteer who ensures that young people always have a safe and welcoming place to visit, and the organisers of the Bridgend Music Service who have inspired generations of young people. To nominate someone, you can complete an online form on the council’s website and email it to mayor@bridgend.gov uk with ‘2026 Citizenship Award Nomination’ in the subject line, or post it to: Mayor’s Parlour, Mayor’s Citizenship Award Nomination, Civic Offices, Angel Street, Bridgend, CF31 4WB. Past winners can be nominated for new achievements, but please note that nominations will close on Friday 16 January 2026 so don’t delay – nominate someone today! WHAT NEXT FOR THE REGENERATION PLANS? The deadline for providing comments on the final draft Porthcawl Waterfront Regeneration masterplan expires on 5 January, and I want to thank everyone who has already taken part and provided their views. Well over 1,000 people attended our public event at the Hi-Tide Inn and the proposals received a wide range of reactions. The next move will involve analysing all that feedback so that a report can be compiled. Once that has been considered, a formal planning application can be submitted. Whatever the outcome of that phase, it is important to note that a great deal of work still needs to be carried out before any construction can begin, including finalising and preparing the regeneration site, sourcing funding and development partners, selecting suitable contractors, satisfying the requirements of the planning process and more. If all goes well, we anticipate that marketing of the site can begin in late spring 2026, with the first phase of development following later in the winter. Don’t forget that answers to some of the most frequently asked questions on the masterplan, including issues such as where will people park and why the plans have to include housing, remain available at www.porthcawlwaterfront.co.uk, and the site will be updated as progress is made. ANOTHER BUDGET PROMISES MORE MISERY Being leaked online, Reeves’s Budget was portrayed as a responsible reset. Yet, UK Labour Government risks burdening ambition whilst offering little to those powering economic growth. Under-65s will see their immensely-popular ISA limits almost halved as a disincentive for responsible savers – nonISA tax on savings income increasing by 2pc – ‘salary sacrifice’ limited to just £2,000. Labour’s re-opened Pandora’s Box on commitments by previous Conservative governments keeping welfare sustainable, at a time that sickness-related benefits may hit £100bn by 2030, with welfare generally reaching nearly 11% of GDP (at an astonishing £313bn.) It’s incredibly telling that only one Labour MP, who was since suspended, felt brave enough opposing their Family Farm Tax. Milk or milk-substitute drinks will be taxed too, included in the Soft Drinks Industry Levy. Fuel Duty is increasing after September 2026, despite every Conservative Budget freezing this. Whilst from 2028, Electric Vehicle drivers are expected to pay 3p per mile now, even if they are abroad, in a pay-per-mile scheme punishing more motorists. Meanwhile, English Mayors will get powers taxing tourists - which we know add additional expenses even for travellers taking ‘staycations’ elsewhere within our Union of Nations. Ultimately, Labour’s latest Budget makes us question whether fiscal choices betray aspiration. DR ALTAF HUSSAIN MS Welsh Conservative Senedd Member for South Wales West

BLWYDDYN NEWYDD DDA A CROESO I 2026!

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas with family and friends. We had a very busy end to the Autumn term with lots of events running at PCS. The PE department held our annual Winter Games competition, we held trips to Winter Wonderland, and we also travelled to Lille Christmas Market! We watched some excellent performances in our Young Playwright Festival, we delivered several Year 6 Science Transition events, and we supported the Foodbank Appeal. We delivered a series of end of term assemblies, and pupils and staff enjoyed their Christmas Dinner. The standout highlight was being able to host our Carol Service once again at All Saints Church in the centre of the community. It was lovely that we were able to welcome parents, carers, and members of the community to celebrate with us. The music once again was outstanding and special thanks to Mrs Giles, Mrs Smith and all the staff involved in contributing to a wonderful evening. Our Year 11 pupils will receive their GCSE Numeracy and/or GCSE Mathematics results very soon and I must congratulate them for their hard work and commitment in preparation for this examination – I look forward to hearing about their success very soon. I look forward to a positive and successful 2026. Mr Stephens, Head Teacher

HI, FROM THE BRIDGE ALTERNATIVE PROVISION A new year is upon us at the Bridge, so why don’t we recap the moments from our last school year? Firstly, our year began with a very successful Estyn inspection from which we received three spotlights, one for our well-being support and guidance the second for our therapeutic support. and the third for us offering an inclusive and equitable curriculum for all pupils. Secondly, another success we had, thanks to our Eco Crew, was the harvesting of a bumper crop from our new allotment. We grew strawberries, potatoes, sweet corn, tomatoes and onions as well as so much chard, we could have created our own forest! Some of the crop we used in our cookery sessions, producing delicious meals such as Chinese curry, red pepper and sausage casserole and creamy chicken pasta with peas and spinach. Yum! At the Bridge, we never forget the importance of parental involvement, so this month, we introduced 30 | seaside news

As we step into the new year, Nottage Primary reflects proudly on a joyful end to 2025. December was filled with festive cheer, and our Christmas shows were nothing short of spectacular. Pupils shone brightly on stage, proving themselves a true credit to their families. The PTA’s sponsored Jolly Folly Reindeer Run was another highlight, raising an astonishing £3,097 towards exciting 2026 projects. Pupils dressed in Christmassy outfits and dashed around the school grounds, spreading laughter and energy. Reception pupils also delighted in the Jolly Postman Christmas card deliveries, an educational initiative by Royal Mail that helped them understand how the postal service works. Our youngest learners brought joy to the wider community too. Early Years pupils visited the RMBI Albert Edward retirement home, singing carols to residents, while the Glee Club performed around the Christmas tree at Porthcawl Medical Centre. Meanwhile, Years 1–6 embraced creativity in Digital Tech workshops provided by ‘Three’, exploring comic books, cartoon making, stop motion animation, animated adverts, and even movie production with green screen technology. Early Years pupils also enjoyed magical trips to meet Santa at Role Up Play Village. We now welcome 2026 and the Spring Term with smiles, laughter, and warm wishes of peace and good health to all the readers. The first term was filled with a variety of learning opportunities and experiences for all pupils. The highlight for parents and carers was the Celebration of Learning. Each class held a performance and shared their work with family and friends. They also created Christmas crafts to be sold as part of a class-based business enterprise. Learners from Year 2 to 6 visited St Fagan’s on an educational visit. In addition, they walked to St Mary’s Church in Mawdlam to learn about the history of the building. To end the school term, they watched a performance of the Story of the Birth at Tabernacl Chapel in Bridgend. Our younger learners were treated to a musical show by Martyn Geraint to celebrate Christmas around the world. Year 5 and 6 visited Maesteg Town Hall to watch Ysgol Gyfun Llangynwyd perform a Welsh-language version of ‘The Little Shop of Horrors’. Wellbeing and Outdoor Learning days have been held. SCHOOLS HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM PORTHCAWL PRIMARY SCHOOL!

We had a wonderful end to 2025, and we’re really looking forward to everything we have planned for 2026! To start the year, we wanted to take a moment to look back at some of our achievements from the Autumn term. We are incredibly proud of what our school community has accomplished by working together. Some of our highlights include: Creating our own monthly pupil newsletter. Supporting charities and raising over £200 for Children in Need and the British Legion. Friends of PPS organising an incredible Neon Disco that raised

£245 for new school equipment. Running a successful book fair and ordering brand-new books for our school. Hosting our PPS Art Gallery event at Porthcawl Museum, where every pupil had their artwork on display. Welcoming over 500 people into school to watch our amazing Christmas shows. Holding our first parent STEM afternoon, where parents and carers joined pupils for hands-on activities. This is just a snapshot of what we have achieved as a school. We are so proud of our pupils, and it has been wonderful to see so many of them shine and share their talents with our community! Sixth Form Information Evening Wednesday 14th January 2026 Time: 5:00pm – 7:00pm

This is an opportunity for Year 11 students and parents/carers to visit the fantastic facilities and learning experiences on offer at Porthcawl Comprehensive School Sixth Form. The purpose of this event is to support students in deciding on their future education and employment pathways for the next academic year. The event will begin with a short presentation in the Sixth Form Hall by the Headteacher and members of the Sixth Form leadership team, followed by an opportunity to speak with different subject leaders about the courses offered in the Sixth Form. Many students in previous years have reported how useful this event was in helping them to decide on the next steps in their lives, and we highly encourage all Year 11 students and parents/carers to attend this event. Year 11 students should also be aware that the deadline for options choices is Friday 23rd January 2026. National Success!

This year, we were informed by Alps (a national school data analysis system) that our 2025 A Level results place us in the top 25% of schools and colleges for value-added progress. This is for schools and colleges across the United Kingdom not just Wales. Alps is an analysis and tracking tool used by many post-16 providers across the UK. The system looks at a student's prior attainment (their GCSE grades) and sets a challenging A Level target grade (what the top 25% of students with similar GCSE results achieve). The system tracks and measures each student’s final achievement against their target grade. In 2025, almost all our students met or exceeded their 'minimum expected' Alps grade - this is an excellent achievement!

We are very proud of our Sixth Form – our students are role models and there is a real sense of ‘belonging’ and ‘community’ in all that we do! Sixth Form is about more than just gaining qualifications and I am sure you will see all that we have to offer on our Information Evening. Please visit our website: Porthcawl Comprehensive School | Ysgol Gyfun Porthcawl (porthcawlschool.co.uk) If you have any questions please contact the school via info@porthcawlschool.co.uk or 01656 774100.

We look forward to seeing you there! 34 | seaside news

FEATURES KENFIG NATURE RESERVE NEWS BIRD RINGING AT KENFIG

GUIDE DOGS FOR THE BLIND

A dedicated group of volunteers carries out weekly bird ringing surveys at Kenfig National Nature Reserve, throughout the year Bird ringing involves the erection of a fine net across areas where birds are known to fly. Birds getting caught in the net are quickly and safely removed. The birds are counted and identified, and a small ring is attached to the bird’s leg. The ring records when and where the bird was captured, so that it can be identified later buy other recorders. Measurements are taken and the birds are weighed before being released. The information from these surveys goes into a national database, and adds to our knowledge of the movements of birds and their condition. Operating a ringing net requires a lot of training and expertise, and only fully qualified and trained ‘ringers’ are allowed to handle the birds. At Kenfig on an average day in the spring or autumn , up to 70 birds are caught, measured and released, and upwards of 40 species are regularly recorded. These sometimes include rare ‘migrant’ birds passing through Kenfig, which is an important stopping off point for birds on migration. Recent records include a number of Firecrests and Yellow-browed Warblers.

A puppy raised in Porthcawl is helping to produce the next generation of guide dogs. Golden retriever Corby, named in memory of local man Neil Corben, was chosen to become a guide dog dad and has already fathered two litters of beautiful puppies. Neil’s widow Sandra, who raised Corby, was invited to visit the first litter of 10 puppies. “It made me so proud to see Neil’s legacy continued through these puppies, who might one day become life-changing guide dogs,” said Sandra. “It was very special and so lovely to see my grandpups. I know that Neil would be so thrilled to think this has happened, and that his legacy was going to continue in that way.” Volunteering as a puppy raiser with Guide Dogs helped Sandra cope with the grief of losing Neil, who was just 57 when he died. The couple had shared the dream of becoming guide dog puppy raisers. Sandra went on to fulfil the role alone, raising nine puppies so far – and there could be more to come. “I hope to raise one of Corby’s pups in the future to continue the legacy,” she said. THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Hi folks, as I do every year, I want to wish you and blessed and fortunate New Year. Here’s a prayer I’d like to pray over us and our families: “Lord Jesus, I pray you will bless us and cause peace to rule in our lives, our homes and our communities. The word bless means to be happy and fortunate and that is exactly what we need. We make a personal choice to put our trust in you and ask you for your supernatural and spiritual guidance. That leads us to eternal life and life in abundance. Our eyes and faith are on you alone for our spiritual security that also manifests itself in daily life, bringing peace, joy and order. You free us from confusion and loneliness and cause our lives to become all you have in mind. Your plans are good for us, so we continue to turn to you. Amid all the problems and issues of life, you continue to weave your presence and plans into our life, turning everything around for good. So, bless this New Year ahead Lord. We look to you.” Neil Harvey

PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD NEWS

the evening added to the warm, spirited atmosphere. And, of course, the magnificent buffet was a feast to remember, making the whole event brilliant. Another highlight of the month was the joy of celebrating Anna’s remarkable 90th birthday. It was a touching and memorable celebration for a very special member. We rounded off our festive season with yet another WI Christmas outing, this time to the Atlantic Hotel for their Dirty Dancing themed evening. With great food, a few festive beverages, and plenty of laughter, it was the perfect way to mark the end of our December celebrations. A good time was certainly had by all. It was truly a December to remember, full of community spirit, celebration, and the unmistakable sparkle of WI. Pamela Powis

PORTHCAWL ROTARY ROUNDUP December went by in a flurry of activity. The wearing of “bling” and the theme of glitz and glamour at the Christmas lunch was a triumph. Members wholeheartedly embraced and entered the spirit of the occasion. Our speaker to welcome in the new year will be Lynda Bryant on the 14th. Lynda previously stepped into the breach in September of last year and her lecture was memorable and so we truly welcome a return visit from this lovely lady. A brand new year and the continuation of our meetings on the second Wednesday of the month at 2pm in The Grove Golf Club. If your spirits are low and you fancy a change of outlook and want to make new friends, then come along and join us and sample our hospitality. We will greet you and look after you. Being in our company hopefully will give you a sense of mixing with like-minded friends. There is no need to feel alone, just come along meet and mingle with our ladies and sample our warmth and friendship. Finally members would like to wish every reader a happy and healthy new year. WI NEWTON PORTHCAWL December was a month overflowing with festive fun, friendship, and first-class entertainment for our WI. From theatre triumphs to milestone celebrations, our members certainly know how to make the most of the holiday season. We discovered some truly talented thespians among us during our wonderful production of The Sound of Music. The performance was nothing short of delightful, filled with energy, charm, and plenty of laughter. Joyful carol singing set the mood perfectly, while humorous stories shared throughout FROM THE SHORE TO YOUR DOOR

Rotary Porthcawl was delighted to welcome two new members, Tony and Alison Jones, to the club. The induction ceremony was conducted by President Dr. Alison Thomas, and both were warmly applauded by everyone present. November proved to be a lively and productive month for the club. Members enjoyed the 75th Anniversary Dinner, followed by a successful Fish and Chip Night. The month also featured the Young Musician Club Round at Margam Abbey, showcasing local talent. In addition, members attended a special presentation at Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital Wales, following Rotary Porthcawl’s collaboration with Rotary Mumbles to purchase five Medical Gaming Carts for young patients. Festive December brought its own flurry of activity, including the traditional Carolcade, the ever-popular Christmas Post, and fundraising collections along John Street. Looking ahead, we will be hosting four quiz evenings at the Jolly Sailor on Wednesdays from 7th-28th January. These enjoyable evenings will raise funds for a local charity, and all are welcome to join in the fun. The Area Young Musician Final will take place on Tuesday, 27th January at 18:00, held at Cowbridge Comprehensive School. Rotary Porthcawl extends sincere thanks to everyone who supported us throughout 2025. Wishing you all good health and good fortune in the New Year. Rtn Robert Lee

TALBOT COMMUNITY CENTRE A Happy New Year to you all. With Christmas just a memory, it’s a time for new beginnings; starting on a fresh page – the way we older ones did at school when given a new shiny red exercise book! We at the Talbot have packed away the Christmas trimmings and are deep in discussion, thinking of new ways to encourage members of the public to use our facilities. As is usual, I try to remind you all that we have an excellent venue at the Talbot, with five toilets, a fourwalled garden, three kitchens, two halls and (a partridge…) suitable for holding kiddies parties, lunches, suppers etc. Anyone wishing to hire the halls for birthday parties (primary children’s age) will receive a 10% discount if booked before the end of 2025 for parties in January, February and March 2026. With Easter Sunday on 5th April, we hope to be holding our Easter Roast lunch for members of the public and of the Talbot. So please if you would like to pass on ideas, or even rent this lovely building, please don’t hesitate to contact me or any Trustee or member of the Talbot. Cheryl Butcher, Trustee

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY Join Trinity Care & Support in supporting adults with learning disabilities in Porthcawl. Trinity Care & Support is a muchloved local charity dedicated to improving the lives of adults with learning disabilities. We are calling on members of our local community to lend a helping hand. Our charity runs a popular Activity Club, where adults with learning disabilities come together to socialise, build confidence and develop new skills through crafts, games, music and outings. The charity is currently looking for volunteers to help at the club — friendly, patient people who can give a few hours of their time each week or month to support activities, chat with our members and help create a warm, inclusive environment. No special qualifications are needed — just enthusiasm, empathy and a willingness to get involved. In addition, TCS is seeking volunteer Board Trustees to help guide the organisation’s future. Our Trustees play a vital role in shaping strategy, ensuring good governance and helping the charity continue its important work in a sustainable and ethical way. This is an ideal opportunity for people with skills in areas such as health, social care, management, finance, community development or communications — or simply a passion for inclusion and equality.

FEATURES FRIENDS OF MONZE ( ZAMBIA )

This year we are supporting another new project in the Monze area. There was a widespread drought across Monze in 2023 but some areas also suffered a drought in 2024. The villagers here are extremely hungry and tired through lack of nutrition. They are currently relying on digging old roots to boil and boil again to eat. This is not nutritious but fills their stomachs for a while. In the two worst areas we have enabled permaculture teaching about drought resistant nutritious roots ,cassava, and methods to conserve rain water. We have 30 families from each of the two areas trained ready to build weir dams. These will slow down rain water flow across farmland and raise water table levels so it can be naturally stored underground for use through the year. As a bonus, soil washed downstream from the heavy rainfall will accumulate at the dam and be used to improve the farmland. To enable villagers to continue with the project a sack of maize is to be provided to each family. The rains are expected towards end of October and hopefully next year will be better for these communities www.friendsofmonze.org.uk Kind Regards Belinda Green.

MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI Mynydd Cynffig WI celebrated Christmas early with a tea party at our final meeting of 2025. During the afternoon we had a quiz which proved to be quite difficult, a secret santa pass the parcel and story, with the parcels being moved left or right as the story unfolded. This meant the parcels progressed one way or the other, this caused great hilarity and confusion as members tried to keep up with the storyteller. Eventually every one landed up with a parcel. The party food, provided by the members, was excellent as usual and enjoyed by all. We also remembered members who are unwell and thanked all members for their contribution to WI life and projects during 2025, particularly the ‘Dental Health matters’ project. Our new secretary was thanked for the excellent job she has undertaken in keeping us up to date throughout the year. On reflection 2025 has been a successful year for us with interesting speakers and some hands on craft sessions. We would also like to thank all members of the Talbot community centre for their hard work and dedication in making our meetings so successful. We hope that 2026 will be as successful, happy and healthy as 2025. Katherine Hier President

HISTORY JANUARY 1964 - TOP OF THE POPS

The first edition of Top of the Pops was broadcast on Wednesday, 1 January 1964 at 6:35 pm from Studio A at Dickenson Road Studios, Manchester (pictured). The first show featured, in order: Dusty Springfield - I Only Want to Be With You, the Rolling Stones - I Wanna Be Your Man, the Dave Clark Five - Glad All Over, the Hollies - Stay, the Swinging Blue Jeans Hippy, Hippy Shake, and the Beatles - I Want to Hold Your Hand. The original set resembled a coffee bar disco with a disc jockey sitting at the turntables. Each week, around 150 youngsters danced to the artists. Even though it was officially against BBC policy, the artists lip-synced to their records. Inevitably, some artists were better at this than others. Bill Cotton came up with the name Top of the Pops. Along with Johnnie Stewart and Stanley Dorfman, he devised the show’s format - the programme would always end with the number one record; only the number one record could appear in consecutive weeks; the show would include the highest new entry and the highest climber on the charts; any song going down in the chart would be omitted. not unusual for towns to hold their own. Hailed as Porthcawl’s Second Annual Semi-National Eisteddfod it was held on 5th August 1918 under a marquee lent by Miss Ruffle, the Matron of the Rest Home, on land lent by Mary Brogden. During the 1920’s /30’s Tabernacle, the Welsh Congregational Chapel, Fenton Place supported Porthcawl Eisteddfodau; the event being held at the Grand Pavilion following its opening in 1932. In 1948 the Grand Pavilion began hosting the Miners’ Eisteddfodau until 2013. October 5th, 1957, was the Eisteddfod that Paul Robeson sang to 5000 miners over the airwaves from New York having had his passport confiscated due to his political views. HEALTH COST OF CANCER - WHAT WE DO Happy New Year everyone. We hope you all had a great Christmas. To all those who are currently going through treatment, we were definitely thinking of you. If you are unsure of what we do as a charity here, we help families of those who are going through treatment for cancer to pay the everyday household bills. The bills that still come in month after month, bills like gas, electricity, water, council tax, etc. We can also help to reimburse travel costs too. So, if you know of anyone that is in this exact position, please do tell them about us. 2025 was the charities biggest year, we gave out over £20,000 which is just incredible, a more accurate figure will be released soon. With this in mind, we are putting on a few events this year, the first is 18th April in 96 Deg coffee in Cowbridge, this is a jewel of a venue, it’s a licenced coffee shop and can hold 50 people easily so we’re dipping our toes into doing an event with a night there. We have the amazing singer Kate Layland and her band to entertain everyone. We’ve got our 10th Anniversary charity ball which will be the 24th October in The Bear in Cowbridge so please keep these 2 dates in mind. More details to be released soon for both events. We’ve also signed the charity up for places in the Cardiff Half which we’re really excited about. Anyway, thanks in advance to anyone who likes, follows and share the page and for those who have already done it you’re awesome. Nicky, Emma & Cath Trustees

HEALTHY EATING FOR 2026 Sprouts may not be at the top of everyone’s dinner wish list, but they should be. Packed with vitamins, minerals, fibre, antioxidants, and more vitamin C than oranges, they really are a gift for your gut and your immune system. To elevate yours, try our Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Mint and Pomegranate Chimichuri. This twist on a classic side dish offers a burst of freshness, 8 plants, and 5g of fibre per serving — a combination your gut will love. Fermented foods bring balance to rich dishes. Tangy krauts, yogurt dressings, and pickled sides cut through heavy flavors and brighten the plate while offering probiotics proven to support digestive health. This Super-simple Kefir Dressing from Prof. Tim Spector (ZOE’s Scientific Co-founder) can add zing to a winter salad or can even be used as a crudité dip before the main event. Tip from a ZOE Nutrition coach: When your meal is served, make sure half (or more) of your plate is filled with colourful plants and eat those before the meat and potatoes. It might sound strange to make sides the star when meat is often the focus, but this tip ensures your meal is balanced, your gut microbes are happy and can even help you tune into your fullness cues and steady your blood sugar. A HEALTHIER HAPPIER 2026 FOR US ALL As we step into 2026, I want to take a moment to wish everyone in our wonderful community health, happiness, and a truly fantastic year ahead. My name is Millie, and many of you will know me from my local Slimming World groups. My own journey has been life-changing - I’ve lost over 8 stone - and that experience is what inspires me every day to support others on their path to feeling healthier, happier, and more confident. I’m incredibly proud of what my members achieved in 2025. Together, we reached some remarkable milestones: 122 members celebrated hitting their personal Target weight, and in total, my groups have lost an amazing 9,115.5lbs - that’s roughly 651 stone in weight! Every single pound lost tells a story of determination, commitment, and belief, and I couldn’t be prouder of each and every member who walked through my doors. If you’re thinking about making a positive change this year, I’m here to support you. Whether you’ve tried before or you’re starting for the very first time, you’ll find a warm welcome, a friendly community, and all the help you need to achieve your goals. Here’s to an inspiring and successful 2026 for us all! WHAT A TRIP As the New Year begins and you reflect on what happened in the last 365 days, where do your thoughts turn? How was your life? Perfect? Would you like to repeat it or maybe make a few adjustments and if so where to start. You may be dreaming of a holiday and wondering where to go and what to take. 2026 is like that as well. Where do you plan to go and what should you take for the journey? Many of us carry around with us every day a bag full of worries responsibilities regrets resentments excuses a heavy bag which would be such a relief to set down and empty. What would you pick to let go of first? Take a moment is it a person alive or dead recent or long ago. An event you cannot change or maybe something you did and now regret. Maybe you were not aware of carrying this load every day and that you can now decide to let the weight go. You cannot go back and change your past, but you can choose what to take forward. Try and release one memory first and when you feel lighter pick another. Be gentle on yourself. Margaret Brown

FINANCE CAN CARS ACTUALLY MAKE YOU MONEY? When you think “investment,” what pops into your head? Sharply dressed advisers tossing around words like “diversification,” “risk profiles,” and “ISA allowances”? Or is it the smell of old leather, a set of spanners, and a 1973 Jag purring in your garage? Let’s pit classic car “investments” against traditional adviser-led portfolios—and see which revs your financial engine. You probably think of cars as a major expense which can only lose you money, as we typically think of cars as a depreciating asset. However, some cars aren’t just old, they’re classic. Classic cars are a rising alternative investment which can not only save you money but can even make a profit! And here’s the thing— no Capital Gains Tax! Cars and Motorbikes are both considered classic over 40 years old. Past this point, your vehicle is exempt from paying road tax! More gains could come from the rise in the value of the vehicle; this is where most classic car collectors make their money. But be warned: turning a profit takes the right timing, patience and cash. You invest not just in potential profit, but in an experience—plus, you can drive your investment! And about that space issue: Maybe consider a motorbike instead as they are much easier to store, being a fraction of the size. They can also offer higher and quicker returns than classic

cars, as motorbikes are typically more volatile yet have a much lower price of entry. But let’s not forget our trusted financial advisers. With their help, you can invest in ISAs, stocks, bonds. You don’t need oil under your fingernails or to befriend a chap called Dave at the classic car club. Portfolios deliver diversification (spread your risk), regular rebalancing, and are stored securely—no garage required! Classic cars and adviser-led portfolios don’t have to be enemies. Rock a well-oiled portfolio for the sensible part of your wealth and keep a classic in the garage for excitement (and potential profit). Just remember, one provides compound interest, the other occasionally leaks it on the driveway. So, next time you’re weighing up share certificates and spanners, ask yourself: do you want to check a balance online, or polish one in your garage? LEGAL LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY (LPAS) What happens when I can’t make decisions for myself? Many of us would like to plan for a time when we need help making decisions and looking after our affairs. A stroke, dementia, Alzheimer’s, heart attack, or a severe accident can leave us dependent upon others to help make crucial choices in our lives. Or we may need to give someone decision-making power for us if, say, we’re going to be in hospital or abroad for a time and can’t easily carry out decisions for ourselves. To plan for the future you can create an LPA. An LPA is a simple way for you to choose someone you trust to make decisions for you. LPAs can be a lot less expensive than other ways for people to make decisions on your behalf and can make things much easier for other people in your life than the alternatives.

• Your spouse, children or friends will have to go to court to make decisions on your behalf – which will be a lot more expensive and time-consuming than making an LPA now. If you still have mental capacity, LPAs are a simple and legally robust way of giving someone you trust the power to make decisions for you – temporarily or for a longer time. Westminster Law are specialists in organising this.

JOSEPH COLEMAN Westminster Law

What would happen if I don’t create a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)? • You will no longer be able to decide who makes decisions for you and looks after your affairs (you can only make your LPA while you still have mental capacity). • People you don’t know will end up making crucial decisions for you instead – such as where you live, whether to accept medical treatment to keep you alive, what you eat and wear, and about your property and your finances.

SIMPLIFYING SEPARATION For family lawyers, the New Year is a busy time with more people seeking advice on issues arising from the breakdown of their relationship. It may be that a couple has decided to remain together for one last Christmas for the sake of the children, only to find that the plan hasn’t worked out. Or it may be an individual who, having separated from their partner some time previously, wants to deal with matters as part of a New Year’s resolution. If you have called an end to your relationship, there are things that you can do in preparation for your first appointment with a solicitor.

With you every step of the way Our services include:

Firstly, gather your bank statements and credit card bills, obtain an up to date mortgage redemption statement and ask an estate agent to assess the value of your house. You should obtain details of your eligibility for tax credits and child benefit.

Wills & Probate · Conveyancing Family · Corporate and Commercial

The Child Maintenance Service has a helpful online assessment tool to help you work out how much you will receive or pay for your children. This information will give you an idea of the income you are likely to have from all sources and then you can work out your budget going forward.

Contact our Porthcawl Office

The courts now expect you to try mediation before making a court application. Some family lawyers offer a service known as Resolution Together in which separating couples who have already reached agreement can jointly instruct a solicitor to help them fine tune the agreement and file a clean break order at court. This has the advantage of keeping acrimony and costs to a minimum. At Red Kite we have solicitors who are qualified Resolution Together experts who will be able to assist you if you choose this course of action. Happy New Year everyone!! Although the weather limits what can be done in the garden this month. At least time indoors can be spent planning new garden designs or changes to your plot, or plan what you fancy growing this year. ARTS STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK

Miles Malleson, has created a female robot called Olga, which he has based on his niece, Penelope (Patricia Roc). The robot is uncannily lifelike and responds obediently to verbal commands. Nigel Patrick and Stanley Holloway are given the job of taking the robot out for the evening, as a test to make sure everything is working, but they don’t realise that Penelope has substituted herself for Olga, and that is when the fun begins. Patricia Roc was one of this country’s biggest female stars of the 1940s, and deservedly so, in my opinion. She had a natural beauty and poise that one so rarely sees these days. If you decide to spend 87 minutes watching this classic farce on YouTube, I don’t think you will be disappointed. Anthony Hontoir, Downwood Films 07510 934299 Picture: Anthony Hontoir

PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR It feels odd as I’m writing this, as you will be reading it in January and in fact I’m writing it in early December owing to the magazine’s early deadline. So, I hope you all had a great Xmas, if you are still with me? I must admit I really hate January and February, and glad to see them out of the way. I feel sorry for all the pubs, it’s a struggling time for them so support them all if you can. Nice to see that three new ones have popped open in the last twelve months or so, including Cheetah’s, Bar 32 and Fraser’s Bar in the old Brentwood. Check out some of the jam and open mic nights at the following: the Picton Hotel Tuesdays and Thursdays, The Rock open mic on a Thursday (all Porthcawl), and I think the Royal Oak in Kenfig Hill does a jam night on a Thursday but check first. The Marine has a band night on a Friday so there’s plenty of live music on offer. Finally, Porthcawl’s Xmas Lights, or light, as I call them were an embarrassment to the town, I’m sad to say! A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW

If there’s one thing that the British used to be able to do extremely well, it was to make films that were completely daft but highly entertaining and hilarious to watch. One film comes to mind. It is called “The Perfect Woman” and was made in 1949, starring Patricia Roc, Nigel Patrick and Stanley Holloway. A slightly dotty professor, played by 54 | seaside news

With so many unique events, 2025 has been one of the most memorable years for the choir. These included singing at Paddington Station during Wales Week, live on BBC Radio Wales’s Owen Money Show during the Porthcawl Elvis festival and at the Principality Stadium before the Wales vs Argentina Autumn International game. Additionally, we have just released an album of our favourite songs titled, ‘Songs from the Seaside.’ The CD version at £10 is excellent value and will make a nice Christmas present. Contact Marilyn Hill on 07789037458 to purchase. Our Christmas concert at All Saints church was very well attended, despite the terrible weather. All who braved rain and high winds enjoyed a lively blend of choral and seasonal music. During this busy period the choir have held concerts for the Porthcawl Stroke Club, the residents of Prince Albert Court and our friends at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. We would like to wish all the readers, our supporters and friends a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. On an incredibly sad note, baritone Phil Tew, a long serving member of the choir recently passed away. The choir sends deepest condolences to his family; his absence will be missed. contact@pothcawlmalechoir.co.uk or Ian Williams 07927 219544

KENFIG HILL MALE VOICE CHOIR

SOUNDS FAMILIAR

Wow, 2025..How did that pass us by so quickly. Lets take a brief look into how this year panned out. A superb St. David’s Day concert at Cornelly Community Centre, Our tour to St. Helier, Jersey, was a highlight in May, allowing us to share our music with new audiences. The annual sell-out concert at Margam Abbey was a staggering success. The Prostate Cymru support concert at Kenfig Hill RFC raised awareness and essential funds for such an important cause. The autumn concert, featuring the Maesteg Gleemen, shared our love of Welsh choral heritage. And to finalise an amazing year, we hosted another Christmas Carol service for the South Wales Emergency Services at Llandaff Cathedral, which is always a pleasure. As 2025 drew to a close, we bid farewell to Terry Thomas and Tony Ulberini as Chairman and Secretary as they step down from their committee roles, expressing deep gratitude for their years of service. Both intend to return as choristers in the new year. So, as we embark into another year, we would like to wish all of our followers, families, and friends a Happy, Safe and Prosperous New Year for 2026. Kind Regards Paul Butterworth Chairman

The final concert of 2025 for Porthcawl choir Sounds Familiar was held at Arlington Road Presbyterian Church. Once again it was a sell-out concert and an appreciative audience enjoyed a variety of less familiar carols, and songs associated with popular Christmas films. The audience was in fine voice to join in the traditional carols that were included in the programme. Both Musical Director, Nick Wayland Evans and accompanist, Stewart Roberts are former members of Only Men Aloud and their wide experience has proved an asset to the choir which is developing a repertoire for any occasion. Maesteg soprano, Rhian Hughes was the guest soloist and enthralled the audience with her beautiful singing. In the New Year the choir will be preparing for a special concert in April, when they will be performing with Pontarddulais Male choir at All Saints’ Church in Porthcawl. That will be a concert not to be missed! Laurence Chilcott

PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB We had our last competition of 2025 on 4th of December which was judged by Rob Mitchell – who was very impressed by the standard of the images. The winner of the best PDI was Neil Woods for his stunning dragon fly image ‘Ruby Skimmer’. Best print went to Frank Shipton for his portrait ‘Chloe’. The Club’s Christmas dinner was enjoyed at the Atlantic Hotel which is getting to be a regular venue for us. We will be hitting the ground running with Club Competition 2 on the 8th January. Happy new year to all, and I look forward to seeing you in 2026. Bill Robertson

Good businesses do not leave visibility to chance.

SEA & SPORT FISH NET ZERO BEACH CLEANS

By the time you read this we’ll have started our Fish Net Zero 2026 beach clean campaign. This will be our 5th year cleaning Coney and the South Wales Coast. Over that time, we’ve changed our name a couple of times starting out as Sea Shepherd UK, we are now part of the Marine Conservation charity Fish Net Zero. It’s been a tad confusing at times so thank you for your understanding…but now we have an incredibly firm foundation, there’s no holding us back anymore. Along the way we have never forgotten our cause. Saving Marine life wherever possible…simple as that…preventing our rubbish from entering the ocean saves the lives of fish, marine mammals and seabirds…literally. We were quite shocked when we started putting some stats together to have an idea of how much we have achieved over the years. Last year for example we had 35 organised beach cleans and prevented 3110 Kg of debris from going into the sea. However, that’s only a part of our overall picture. Since we started, we have removed 9,457 tonnes from our beach. That’s about the weight of two Orcas! We could only do that with a total of 2,084 incredible individual volunteer interactions… How amazing is that In total we have had 98 organised beach cleans…so this month will see our 100th clean! We just can’t thank everyone enough for coming together and helping us. We are of course not the only ones cleaning our coast, with so many individuals and groups including the Wombles, SAS, and Volunteer Beach clean to name just a few. So many caring folk coming from far and wide to help our sea life … incredible…thank you! If you’d like to join us on any of our beach cleans, or contact us to retrieve a net, please check our FishNetZero FB and insta pages. Check out the Pantri-Box window for dates and times. Get in touch info@greenbritainfoundation.co.uk It’s for their Ocean! Elkz, Porthcawl

PORTHCAWL SURF REPORT By the time this article is published we’ll have welcomed in 2026! However, we’re looking back to December before looking to the New Year. A couple of swells lit up our local beaches over the festive period seeing some of Porthcawl’s stalwart surfers and club members including George Schofield and Steve Childs get stuck in and showcase their well-honed skills. Meanwhile Greg Owen set off to warmer climes to compete in the Masters event of the Spring Surfest Las Américas Pro 2025 in Tenerife, securing 6th place against some of Europe’s top surfers in this category. It was also great to have a flying visit from one of Porthcawl’s great surfing expats, Rhino, who is much missed in the line-up. Several of our younger surfers have also been seen running to the beach after school trying to catch even one weekday wave before losing the light. The keenness of so many groms, especially those who came to the spring/summer club surf sessions, is resulting in a great young surf community. Many of them got together just before Christmas at the Welsh Surf Federation Surf Series Awards night. It was a night which not only celebrated the junior surfers who took the overall top spots having competed in an inter club series of surf comps across Wales, of which we can proudly say included several of our club members, but for all the groms to meet up, revel in the fun surfs that they had in 2025 and celebrate their improvements. Thanks to Rest Bay Cafe Bar for hosting a great night. The older surf club members had an opportunity to get together and regale their 2025 surf stories at the club Christmas Party. A lively night at the Greedy Pig which also saw the giving of a range of annual awards from recognising commitment to the club and stand out local surfers in 2025 to skid mark of the year (least proud surfing moment)! Like most years 2025 kept us on our surfing toes from stand out clean days and epic grom club sessions to some less than appealing conditions where we force ourselves to get in for paddle practice (or not). Hopefully enough of us asked Santa for an increase in the quota of good wave days for 2026! We’ll have to see! Emma C

PORTHCAWL NCI REPORT In March 2023 our watchkeepers observed a large piece of driftwood make its way up the channel, They contacted the Coastguard at Milford Haven thinking it may be a danger to shipping. It was subsequently washed up on Town Beach and became “Lizzy”. Recently, our watchkeepers watched as Lizzy departed because of a big Spring tide and gale force winds. Now the weather is getting colder, wetter and windier, there is much less activity on the beaches and shoreline, which is reflected in the amount of log entries the watchkeepers are making. This can be difficult for the crew as, even when there is little going on, the watchkeepers still need to remain vigilant as incidents can occur at any time. With the sun setting earlier this time of year, the station is now closing at 16:00 every day. Our group of trainees that started their training in October, have progressed to being trainee watchkeepers in the tower, along with a mentor and an additional qualified watchkeeper. Hopefully, they will all be assessed early in the new year and gain qualified watchkeeper status. The station will be open on Christmas Day from 09:00 to 12:00 to keep an eye on the start of the Christmas swim. If you’re passing the tower, call up for a chat and a biscuit or chocolate. Deb Gurton Media Officer, Porthcawl NCI
