Lazar owns winning trend team float in the parade.” Lazar and alternate captains Alex Gillies (Michigan Tech Huskies) and Jordan Burns (Salmon Arm Silverbacks, BCHL) represented the core of that Vernon team, coached by Ross Jewell. “Definitely not,” said Lazar, asked if he ever gets tired of hoisting trophies. “People say I’m getting pretty good at it and I told everybody after the game that my junior career is now complete. “That was a phenomenal game. It was junior hockey at its finest and there really wasn’t ever any doubt we were going to hold on. The fan support was incredible. That was probably the loudest crowd I’ve ever played in front of.” Lazar, a power forward, finished with five goals and nine points. The two-week experience was also golden for Lazar’s family. His parents, Dave and Karen, and siblings, Jenna, Ryan and Cory, followed him just about everywhere. Lazar was born in Salmon Arm and moved to Vernon at age 10. He played two years of Pee Wee AAA hockey in Vernon before joining the Pursuit of Excellence program in Kelowna for two seasons and finally spending one year with the Okanagan Hockey Academy in Penticton. He was the second player taken, by the Oil Kings, in the 2010 Western Hockey League Bantam draft, and the 17th choice, by the Senators, in the 2013 NHL entry draft.

That ever-present grin Curtis Lazar wears is now recognized all over Canada. Just 20 days after recording his first NHL goal with the Ottawa Senators, Lazar received the 2015 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship trophy Jan. 5 before 19,014 delirious fans at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Loaned to Team Canada by the Sens, Lazar was a classy, upbeat captain and one of seven returnees from last year’s fourth-place lineup in Sweden. The drama-jammed 5-4 win over the Russians left Lazar sleepless in Toronto. Lazar helped the Edmonton Oil Kings claim the Memorial Cup seven months ago in London, Ont. and in 2011, joined current Canadian teammates Nic Petan and Sam Reinhart to strike gold for B.C. at the Canada Winter Games in Halifax. The down-to-earth centre broke Sidney Crosby and Steven Stamkos scoring records with a dozen snipes and 17 points for that gold medal. And in 2008, Lazar was captain of the Vernon Watkin Motors Mustangs, who stopped the Swift Current Broncos 6-0 in the A final of the Coca-Cola Pee Wee Classic. “The Winter Carnival was an awesome experience,” said Lazar. “I remember playing in front of a packed Civic Arena and the atmosphere was great, not to mention the opportunity to have a

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE On behalf of the Greater Vernon Minor Hockey Association executive, staff, volunteers and members, I would like to welcome all the players, coaches and families to the 44th Peewee Tier 1 Coca Cola Classic! This tournament has become a proud tradition in Vernon, and a highlight of the Vernon Winter Carnival held every year for ten days in February. The countless hours that are dedicated to our youth by coaches, officials, administrators and hockey moms and dads, is truly heroic. It is through world class tournaments such as this, that all your efforts are rewarded by the smiles on our kids’ faces. As an Association, we embrace the principles of Respect in Sport, which reminds us to respect our coaches, volunteers, officials, the fans, and perhaps most importantly, our opponents. The history of this tournament is a proud one, and we are honoured you have chosen Vernon and the Coca-Cola Classic tournament as a place to build positive memories for your team and its supporters. Have Fun! Sincerely, Richard Frater, President Greater Vernon Minor Hockey Association

The Vernon Peewee Tier 1 Mustangs play in the Greater Vernon Minor Hockey Association. They are affiliated in the OMAHA Tier 1 Division along with Kelowna, Kamloops and Prince George. The GVMHA Is one of the smallest Tier 1 Associations in British Columbia by registration numbers. The team is made up of 13 players born in 2002, seven of which are returning from last season and 5 players born in 2003. The Mustangs play a good team game, with a focus on passing and puck possession. Our goal is to develop a drive to compete and skills for creativity. Although we are from a small Association, we always give our opponents a run for their money. We have been successful in winning games against two of the three opponents in our division and have our sights set on league playoffs. The Chilliwack Peewee A1 Bruins play out of the Chilliwack Minor Hockey Association. The Bruins began the PCAHA season in flight two but were moved up to flight one after finishing 1st in placement, with a record of 6-1-1. The team is made up of 16 players born in 2002 and 1 player born in 2003. The Bruins have a good mix of size and speed, along with 2 solid goaltenders. The team has had a lot of success in the early part of the season and is trying to learn and take something positive and constructive from both the wins and losses. A 7-3 win over a strong NSWC A1 team this season has been a highlight thus far. The Bruins lost to Nanaimo in the final of their opening tournament in Abbotsford and finished 4th out of 12 teams in Langley’s tier one Gil Martin Memorial tournament nearly making it to the finals after losing, in overtime, to a strong Springbank team in the semifinals.. Chilliwack Peewee A1 Bruins have played well in PCAHA’s flight 1 and know that they have to work hard and stay focused every time they step on the ice, taking nothing for granted. The Bruins are excited to participate in the 44th Annual Vernon Winter Carnival Coca-Cola Classic Invitational Pee Wee Hockey Tournament!

We are the Kelowna Tl Jr. Rockets and our home association is the Kelowna Minor Hockey Association. Kelowna traditionally has one of most competitive PeeWee teams in the Valley and we are excited to play teams from allover the north west. We play in a small league with only 2 other teams so we look for opportunities to play teams outside of our league. We have approximately 15 - 2nd year players and 2 - 1st year players and expect to compete at a high level. Last season the team had a very strong record losing only a hand full of games all year. We hope to continue that success and showcase the great hockey talent and development programs the Okanagan has to offer. We offer good goaltending and a strong offensive core and play a clean, skilled game of hockey. Our coach is originally from Chicago and has a long history of success and we hope to carry that into this season.

The Seattle Junior Peewee A1 NW Admirals currently play in the Fraser Valley Conference of the PCAHA league. Seattle Junior (SJHA) celebrated 40 years in 2014 and has a proud tradition of producing highly competitive teams and talented hockey players. Currently the SJHA Peewee A1 NW Admirals are 5-3 in tiering play and finished third in the inaugural “Don Chiupka Memorial” tournament hosted by Seattle Junior Association. The team is comprised of 11 second year and six first year players, all of who take pride in being tough to play against and being an exciting hockey team to watch. The coaching staff focuses on the development of individual player’s skills and the “effort” that it takes to win rather than the wins and losses.

The Spokane Jr. Chiefs Peewee “A” team is proud to represent Spokane American’s Youth Hockey Association (SAYHA). The team plays in both the Pacific Northwest and West Kootenay Minor Hockey Associations providing for opportunities for its players to face competition from 8 other teams in PNAHA and 3 other teams in WKMHA with travel opportunities throughout Washington, USA, and the West Kootenay region of British Columbia, CA. The Jr. Chiefs are maintaining a winning record and recently took second at a tournament in Boise, ID, USA where they went undefeated to get into the championship game. The team is made up of 2 returning “A” level players along with 10 other second year peewees and six first year peewees. All players are coming from winning seasons in their respective divisions in the 2013-2014 season including two state championship titles. The coaching staff is committed to continued player and team development with a fifty game season culminating in what they hope to be both Washington state and West Kootenay first place finishes. With an 18 player roster the Spokane Jr. Chief Peewee A team is proud to have players that represent not only the Greater Spokane area but other cities from the western United States as well. Players from Kenai and Anchorage, Alaska are enjoying the balminess of Spokane while players from Phoenix, Arizona and Las Vegas, Nevada have discovered pond hockey since coming to Spokane.

History of Trophies “A” DIVISION TROPHY - AMY MYLES TROPHY Best known for her untiring work with the Vernon & District Minor Hockey Association, Mrs. Myles was a familiar figure around the arena for over 15 years. She was one of the first mothers to start the “Mothers’ Auxiliary to Minor Hockey”. In April 1965, Minor Hockey said “thank you” to Mrs. Myles by presenting her with a Life Membership in the association. In 1968 the CAHA presented her with a Scroll of Merit in recognition of her outstanding service and dedication to hockey and to the physical and mental development of young Canadians. Born in Ontario, she moved to Vernon with her husband Dan after the Second World War. She is survived by her husband Dan and one son and daughter. Amy Myles was a true and great friend to all who knew her. “B” DIVISION TROPHY - ALEX KULY TROPHY Born and raised in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, Alex Kuly played some of his Junior Hockey with Portage La Prairie Terriers. He then moved to the Flin Flon Bombers defence. During the war he served in the Air Force as a physical education instructor and later returned to play defence for the Flin Flon Bombers. He moved to play defence for Kamloops, and to Vernon where he coached for one season. He was the head referee for the Okanagan Mainline Minor Hockey Association until he was transferred to Quesnel as the Forest Ranger. While in Quesnel he coached the Quesnel Kangaroos. He returned to Vernon in 1961 where he was a strong supporter of Minor Hockey. “C” DIVISION TROPHY - MICKEY McMAHON TROPHY Born in Nelson, raised in Revelstoke, Mickey McMahon came to Vernon in 1951, where he was employed as a Telegrapher for the CPR. His avid interest in sports and a love of hockey, along with his enthusiasm for the younger players started his involvement with Minor Hockey in 1968. He managed the pup division and Pee Wee rep teams. Along with coach Walt Trentini, he took the team to win the “A” Division in 1973 and “B” Division in 1974. Mickey held various positions in Minor Hockey including President, 1975-76. He was presented with a Scroll of Merit in 1972 by the Canadian Legion for his contribution to Minor Hockey. In 1977 he was honoured by the Mother’s Auxiliary and was also presented with a Life Membership in the Vernon Minor Hockey Association. He is survived by his wife, one son and a daughter. “D” DIVISION TROPHY - MICKEY OGASAWARA TROPHY Michael Barton “Mickey” Ogasawara was born in Vernon July 22, 1936. Mickey started playing hockey as a Pee Wee, then played with the bantam and midget rep teams who won valley titles. In 1952, although of midget age, he helped the Vernon Juveniles Hockey Club to win the B.C. Championship in Trail. In 1953, he played for the Juvenile Lacrosse team, coached by the late Ben Douglas and they won the B.C. Juvenile Championship, defeating New Westminister at the coast. In 1954, he was catcher for Nick’s Aces softball team (fastpitch) and won the B.C. Senior “B” Championship in Aldergrove. In 1956, the Vernon Junior Hockey team won the B.C. Championship in Victoria with Mickey as a team member. In 1954 he started work for Kelly Douglas & Co., and became a “25 Year Club” member. After marriage he was head referee for the North Okanagan Hockey League and in the summer he umpired senior baseball games throughout the valley. His two daughters are carrying on his athletic traditions. Mickey passed away October 18, 1981. DAN OXNARD TROPHY - MOST SPORTSMANLIKE TEAM Dan Oxnard was born in Lytton, B.C. August 1944 and moved to Vernon in 1966. He was a professional firefighter for the Vernon Fire Department for 28 years. Dan gave a great deal of his time off helping raise money for Muscular Dystrophy and the B.C. Burn Unit. He got involved in Minor Hockey in 1975 where he spent 12 years coaching, managing teams or holding down executive positions as Director, Vice President and President. If there was a job to be done Dan was always there to help. Dan joined the Pee Wee Hockey tournament committee in 1985, spending the next 8 years making it the success it is today. Dan died in a skiing accident in January 1995. Dan is survived by his wife Darlene, daughter Tanis and son Dano. He is missed by all who knew him. ERNIE KOWAL TROPHY - COACH’S AWARD Ernie Kowal was active in Junior A and minor hockey in Vernon since moving to the city in 1958. ‘Esso Ernie’ served as a coach, manager, vice-president and president in the Vernon Minor Hockey Association and was an owner with the Vernon Essos of the B.C. Junior Hockey League. A volunteer firefighter and former member of the RCMP Auxiliary force, Ernie died December 12, 1997 at the age of 63. He is survived by his wife Viv, son Tom (now an NHL referee) and daughter Sue. Ernie and his brother-in-law, Vern Dye, ran the Junior A franchise in Vernon for more than 20 years and the two men used their own vehicles to transport players on road trips. Ernie coached the juvenile Reps in 1983 and made national headlines with a no swearing policy on the team. He was named provincial coach-of-the-year in 1985 after he and Tom lead the Vernon Atom Reps to the Okanagan title.
