Dye showed prime passion for hockey Watching his grandson David Robinson captain the Watkin Motors Mustangs in the Winter Carnival CocaCola Pee Wee Hockey Classic a few years ago put a huge smile on Vern Dye’s face. Hockey brought a lot of happy memories to Vern, a highly respected sports pioneer who died in December after a courageous six-month battle with cancer. He was 82. The first lifetime member of the B.C. Junior Hockey League in 1989, Dye was the league’s 12th president from 1980-81 and later served as vice-president. He was part of an 18-member group which signed $300 notes and bought the Vernon Canadians from Bill Brown for minor hockey. “Two years later we bought it off minor hockey for $5,000,” Dye told The Morning Star in a 1999 interview. Vern served as GM of the franchise for a long run with teams known as the Blades, Essos, Vikings and Canadians. He is remembered as a father-figure by many Junior A players who not only played for Vern, but spent time in his billiards hall or billeted with his family. “Vern was great,” said former Esso scoring champion John Price, who played a lot of crib and pool with Vern. “He made sure we had spending money and a charge account at the pool hall for food. He looked after all of us and he was always there for you. He was like a parent, both him and Odie (coach Lowe). They treated you like men. When you were in the pool hall, you could always talk to Vern about anything.” If you lived with Vern and his wife Joyce and five kids, you were given the house key without any background checks. “It was a hockey house,” said Joyce. “We always had two or three billets and they felt like sons. Our kids weren’t put out by having other kids living with us. One time I counted and I cooked either lunch or dinner for 27 kids in the same day. We had sandwich bags all over the place.” Vern, who also managed one Coy Cup championship team in Vernon, joined his brother-in-law Ernie Kowal and city engineer Dave McKay in 1971 to have Lakeview Park built for baseball diamonds. He loved to go with local talent and the 1971-72 BCJHL championship Essos had 11 Vernon products. “He was a good man,” said Esso goalie Charlie Briskham, who stayed with the Dyes. “He didn’t do it for the money because every Junior player who came through a stall owed him money.”

GREATER VERNON MINOR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION President’s Message On behalf of the Greater Vernon Minor Hockey Association, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all visiting players, coaches, parents and fans who are attending the 34th Annual Pee Wee Winter Carnival. It is an honour to host such an esteemed event, which has involved many players throughout the years who have gone on to higher levels of hockey, including the NHL. We are proud of our alumni, which include Eddie Johnstone (New York Rangers), Ken Holland (Detroit Red Wings GM), Brent Gilchrist (Montreal Canadiens as well as the Detroit Red Wings), Jarred Smithson (Los Angeles Kings) and Troy Mick (National Championship Royal Bank Cup Coach of the Vernon Vipers). Greater Vernon Minor Hockey has shown a tremendous growth over the past six years. We have seen our numbers grow from 511 players in 1999 to over 670 this season, which shows an enthusiasm for our national sport in the local area and a wonderful playing experience for all members year after year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank every volunteer involved with Greater Vernon Minor Hockey for his or her enthusiasm and efforts, which contributes to the enjoyment of the sport by all participants. Thank you also to Peter Murray and the Vernon Winter Carnival Pee Wee Tournament Committee and their sponsors for making this one of the most prestigious events to be involved with.

THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF VERNON February 2005 Welcome to the 34th Annual Coca-Cola Classic Invitational Pee Wee Hockey Tournament! The Mustangs, as of this writing, have competed in three tournaments (Abbotsford, Salmon Arm, Lethbridge) compiling a 8-4-2 record which resulted in an appearance in the final of the Salmon Arm event. The team is made up of 5 first year Pee Wee’s and 12 second year Pee Wees with 6 of the second year veterans playing on the AAA team last year. The team has a good balance of size and

speed, with the offence coming from all three lines and a very mobile defence core. The solid goaltending tandem of Tyler Steel and Conor Barrie provide excellent back up to the run and gun style the team generally uses. The Mustangs are at their best when a physical presence is added to the mix. All Mustang players, parents, and coaches wish to extend their best wishes to all visiting teams. Thanks to the work and dedication of the many Winter Carnival Tournament volunteers all of you will be treated to one of the most memorable and finest hockey events in Western Canada.

The Anchorage Northstars Pee Wee AAA is excited and proud to represent the State of Alaska in this year’s Coca-Cola Tournament. The team consists of 17 players all 1992 birth dates and this is the third season this blue collar core group has been together. They have finished 2nd and 3rd place at their State championships over the past two seasons. The Northstars are in the comp division of the Anchorage Hockey Association which has been teaching and promoting the growth of Alaskan Hockey for over forty years. The team has traveled outside the state several times to tourneys in San

Diego Ca, Seattle Wash, and Colorado Springs Colo. This will be the first trip into Canada for many of the players, but the coaching staff’s excited to introduce the players to the high caliber and style of Canadian hockey, but more importantly will provide a venue for both players and parents the opportunity to experience the game at its purest form. We would also like at this time to thank everyone involved with this awesome event and letting the 49th state participate in this prestigious tournament. We look forward to this being one of the many highlights of our season. Thanks Vernon!

While we are a small association we routinely compete against some of the largest associations in the province. Our team is comprised entirely of 1992 birth year players with six of them returning from last year’s team which made it to the AA Provincials in Cranbrook. Most of our players have played

together since they were five and have participated in many teams together including spring league hockey since that age. A tight knit group, our players have been friends away from the rink in a variety of sports. This tournament is a highlight of our regular season and we look forward to making new friends.
