Grandma Grace’s joy knows no bounds with the arrival of her first grandchild, Sarah. The clear delight that fills her heart whenever she sees Sarah is obvious in her every action. This precious bond between grandma and Sarah is strengthened by Grandma Grace’s unshakable love and the special time they share together. One of the most endearing aspects of their relationship is Grandma Grace’s love for singing her favorite church hymns to Sarah. Each melody is not just a song but a heartfelt prayer and a wish for Sarah’s future. Grandma Grace dreams of the day when Sarah will sing in the church choir, or perhaps even lead the ensemble as the choir director. Through these hymns, she imparts not only her love for music but also her deep-rooted faith and the values she holds dear.
The anticipation of lazy summer days spent together fills Grandma Grace with excitement. She envisions holding Sarah’s hand, walking through the park, and engaging in conversations about life. These walks awill be more than just a leisurely activity. They will be an opportunity for Grandma Grace to share her wisdom, stories, and experiences with her granddaughter. Each stroll is a step towards building a lasting connection that will be cherished for years to come.
However, there is one thing Sarah is blissfully
unaware of: Grandma Grace is not a good cook. Her cooking, while prepared with much love, often doesn’t taste good. It is guranteed to turn a smile upside down. Meals tend to be too salty, and her cookies are too sweet. Despite this, the family has grown accustomed to her cooking over the years. We endure it not out of obligation but, out of love and respect for the effort that Grandma Grace pours into every dish she prepares. Everything Grandma Grace does is driven by her love and the desire to bring joy to her loved ones. Whether it’s singing hymns, planning park outings, or cooking meals, her actions are a reflection of her deep affection and dedication to our family. This love has only grown stronger since the passing of Grandpa Ted. His absence has brought the family closer together, united in our shared memories and love for one another. Grandma Grace’s relationship with Sarah is a beautiful blend of music, dreams, and heartfelt moments. Her love, expressed in both grand and simple gestures, creates a foundation for a bond that will always grow stronger with time. Our family cherishes her for the love she so freely gives. Grandma Grace’s joy and love is what keeps our family close, making every moment spent together special.
From Adam and Eve to You and Me- “We are Family”
Daphne Perry
In the beginning, Adam, and Eve, the first family of biblical lore, found their bond in the Garden of Eden, where love flourished amidst lush foliag e and whispered promises of eternity. They were humanity’s progenitors, their union a testament to the divine design of family—a sacred covenant between two souls bound by love and shared destiny.
As history unfolded, the concept of family evolved. From the tr ibes of Israel, where kinship was defined by blood and lineage, to early Christian co mmunities, where believers found solace in the fellowship of faith, family expanded, encom passing not just biological ties but spiritual bonds as well.
Yet, amidst this evolution, a darker chapter unfolded. Enslaved persons, torn from their homelands and families, found solace and strength in newfound b onds forged in the crucible of oppression. Together, they became family, supporting each other through hardship and suffering, their resilience a testament to the enduring power of love.
During the Renaissance, a time of enlightenment, the rise of hu manism and individualism transformed familial dynamics. Love and companionship took prec edence over tradition and duty, marking a radical shift in the perception of family.
The industrial revolution brought seismic shifts in family stru cture. Urbanization and globalization reshaped the social fabric, giving rise to nuclea r families and extended kinship networks. Yet, amidst change, family remained a sanctuary of love and support in a world fraught with uncertainty.
In the modern era, family reflects the kaleidoscope of human ex perience. From traditional households to blended families, from same-sex couples to chosen families, kinship embraces myriad configurations. At its core, family remains a beacon of hope—a sanctuary where hearts find refuge and souls find belonging.
Jesus taught that disciples and anyone who does the will of God are His family. This is good news! We all belong to God, and through Jesus Christ, God made a way for us to be part of His eternal family. Fam, “are you in the FAMILY?”

Based a true story
Major Keels has been an unwavering pillar of faith within the hallowed halls of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Manhattan, New York, for over three decades. As a dedicated deacon, his journey towards spiritual enlightenment has been intertwined with his steadfast service to the church community. Raised in the Baptist tradition, Major found solace and belonging within the walls of his home church, where his devout commitment to his faith flourished. Even though he occasionally visited other denominations, he felt most at home within the Baptist congregation. It was here that he found resonance with the teachings and values that shaped his spiritual identity.
While some may have been called to preach, he humbly recognized the enormity of such a commitment and instead found fulfillment in his role as a deacon. The responsibilities of a deacon demand dedication and service, qualities that he embodies with staunch devotion.
framework of his faith, Major came to understand the transformative power of merging spirituality with activism. This realization ignited a passion within him to advocate for justice and equality within and beyond the church walls. Through his loyal service as a deacon, Major has forged a deep and abiding connection with the divine, finding solace, purpose, and fulfillment in his firm commitment to his faith and his community.
In addition to being a deacon, Major enjoys his role as a husband, a father, and a grandfather. Married for over 50 years, he and his wife have nurtured a love that stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and family. As a proud father and grandfather, Major cherishes the bonds of kinship that enrich his life, instilling in him values of love, compassion, and unity.
Throughout his tenure at Abyssinian Baptist Church, Major’s perspective on the intersection of politics and religion has evolved. Initially skeptical of mixing the two realms, it was the influence of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that challenged his beliefs. Witnessing King’s untiring dedication to social justice within the
Faith and family are intricately woven threads, in the tapestry of his life, each contributing to the vibrant mosaic of his existence. As he continues to walk his spiritual journey, Major Keels stands as a beacon of light and inspiration, embodying the timeless virtues of faith, service, and love.

t 45 years old, Calvin has lived a life filled with challenges, many of which his family believes are of his own making. Despite being saved as a teenager, his path has been anything but smooth.
Calvin has had difficulty holding down a stable job, which has led to a lack of reliable transportation. Even when he does manage to secure a decent car, he often finds himself arriving late, perpetuating a cycle of instability. His health problems, including heart disease and type 2 diabetes have further complicated his life, creating additional stress and hardship.
One of Calvin’s belief’s is that God will always take care of him because of his faith. This conviction has given him a sense of hope, but, it has also led to some troubling behaviors. Calvin has never been married or has had a steady relationship which has isolated him from forming a strong, supportive relationship with God. Financially, Calvin has relied on his family
for support, often borrowing money without the intention or ability to pay it back. His family, bound by their Christian faith, has shown him grace and forgiveness, though it has not been without frustration. They suspect that Calvin’s belief in their Christian compassion has led him to take advantage of their kindness.
Calvin is a talker. He can strike up a conversation with anyone about anything, a trait that has both charmed and exasperated those around him. However, his tendency to drink and smoke marijuana too much, which he attributes to stress, has caused further concern among his family members.
Despite all his flaws and the difficulties he faces, Calvin’s family holds onto the belief that God loves us unconditionally. However, they also recognize that God calls us to be responsible and to make wise choices. Calvin’s story serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between faith, personal accountability, and the love that family can provide.
So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army.

Saturday morning coffee with my mom is a special ritual, a sanctuary of warmth and connection in the bustling chaos of life. It’s a time when the world slows down, and we can simply be together, savoring each other’s company and the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee. It’s the time when we can take pleasure in knowing that the day brings with it God’s new and tender mercies.
Since my father’s passing, I’ve taken on the role of caring for my mom, ensuring she feels loved and supported through the waves of grief and adjustment. Our Saturday mornings have become more than just a caffeine fix; they’re moments of solace and shared strength. As we sit across from each other, sipping our steaming cups of coffee, there’s an unspoken understanding between us, a silent acknowledgment of the love and resilience that binds us together, and a silent acknowledgement of the empty chair that sits across from us.
In these precious moments, conversation flows effortlessly, punctuated by laughter and the occasional quiet reflection. We discuss everything from trivialities to life’s profound mysteries, finding comfort in each other’s presence and the familiarity
of our shared experiences. Through these conversations, I’ve come to appreciate not only my mom’s wisdom and perspective but also the depth of our bond. I am so thankful that God chose her to be my mother. Our Saturday morning coffee dates have solidified the closeness between us, reinforcing the knowledge that no matter what challenges life may throw our way, we have each other’s unwavering support, and a faithful God that controls all. In these stolen moments of intimacy, I am reminded of the immeasurable love I hold for my mom and the profound impact she has had on shaping the person I am today.
As the steam from our coffee mingles with the morning sunlight streaming through the window, I am filled with gratitude for these simple yet insightful moments of connection. In my past, I was a thief. I would sneak into my mother’s purse, snatching away bits of her hardearned money without a second thought. I lied to my parents about where I spent my time, who I was with, and what I was doing. I’ve been arrested for shoplifting more than ten times, very reckless behavior.
Alcohol was my temporary escape from everything wrong within my life. Daily, I’d indulge in weed, altering my mind with its smoky allure. Promiscuity became a game, a pursuit of pleasure with no regard for consequence or connection. Secular music pumped through my veins, its lyrics resonating with my wild spirit as I danced through the night, lost in the thumbing beats of non-stop rebellion. Partying every night was a ritual for me. However, one fateful evening, the music faded into silence as I found myself in the wreckage of a horrible car accident, my body was badly injured. Life hung in the balance as I lay in the hospital, hooked up to machines, barely sustaining life. Then, amidst the sterile walls and sterile beeps,
a very bright beacon of hope appeared. A local pastor, a messenger of divine grace, spoke of a love beyond comprehension, a love that reached even the darkest corners of my soul. In that moment of vulnerability, I felt the weight of my longtime sins and the longing for redemption.
As his words poured over me, a realization dawned—a longing for change, a desire for salvation. With trembling hands, I reached out, grasping onto faith like a lifeline. In that hospital room, amidst the steady hum of machines and the scent of antiseptic, I surrendered my brokenness and embraced the light of Christ. From that moment on, my life transformed. The darkness that once controlled me to be the way I used to be was replaced by a radiant grace, a guiding light leading me down a path of redemption and renewal. I was saved, not by my own merit, but by the unyielding love of a Savior who saw beyond my flaws and forgave my transgressions. And in that newfound faith, I found purpose, peace, and a love that knows no bounds. I was saved at the right time.

My dedicated father’s wisdom and kindness guides our family

My father makes me smile and laugh all of the time. We read the Bible together. He explains the stories in the Bible to me. My Daddy makes it clear to understand. I feel confident with him
My father makes me smile and laugh all the time. His sense of humor is wonderful, and his jokes always brighten my day. One of my favorite times with him is when we read the Bible together. He has a unique way of explaining the stories that makes them come alive. His explanations are clear and easy to understand, which helps me grasp the deeper meanings and lessons within the scriptures. Daddy’s approach to teaching me about the Bible is gentle and patient. He never rushes through the stories or overwhelms me with too much information at once. Instead, he takes his time, ensuring that I fully understand each part. His
insights are thoughtful, and he often relates the stories to real-life situations, making them even more relevant and meaningful. What I appreciate most about these moments is the bond we share. Reading the Bible together isn’t just about learning; it’s about spending quality time with my father and strengthening our relationship. His guidance and wisdom make me feel confident and secure. I know I can ask him anything, and he’ll provide a thoughtful answer. His presence in my life is a constant source of joy and comfort. His laughter and love are like a warm blanket, wrapping me in a sense of safety and happiness. I’m grateful for every moment we spend together, and I cherish the way he makes even the simplest activities, like reading the Bible, so special and enjoyable. My father’s influence has shaped my understanding of faith and life, and for that, I am profoundly thankful.

Moments to engage deeply with Him enhancing your faith
Jack Reese
In our busy daily live’s carving out quality time to spend with God can be challenging but, in these moments of devotion and connection we will find ourselves growing in faith, feeling refreshed, receiving encouragement, and expressing our gratitude for all His blessings.
Spending time with God allows us to deepen our relationship with Him, fostering spiritual growth. By reading His word, engaging in prayer, and meditating on His promises, we build a foundation of faith that withstands life’s trials. As we grow closer to God, we gain a clearer understanding of His will and purpose for our lives. This spiritual maturity not only strengthens our faith but also equips us to be a light to others, sharing the love and truth of God in our communities. Life can be draining, but time spent in God’s presence brings a unique and profound refreshment. Just as Jesus retreated to pray and seek the Father’s presence, we too find rest and rejuvenation in moments of quiet communion with our Creator. These times of solitude and reflection allow us to lay down our burdens, worries, and fears at His feet, receiving in return His peace that surpasses all understanding.
God’s word is a pool of encouragement. When we dedicate time to study the Bible, we discover countless promises and examples of God’s faithfulness. These stories and assurances uplift our spirits and remind us that we are never alone in our struggles. Furthermore, through prayer,
we open our hearts to God’s comforting presence, finding solace in knowing that He is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble and need.
In our fast-paced world, it is easy to overlook the blessings that surround us daily. Spending time with God creates a space for us to pause and reflect on His goodness. By thanking Him for His countless blessings—both big and small— we cultivate a heart of gratitude. This attitude of thankfulness not only honors God but also shifts our perspective, helping us to see and appreciate the beauty and provision in our lives.
God is always speaking to us, whether through His word, the Holy Spirit, or the circumstances around us. However, we don’t always hear or listen to His instructions. By setting aside intentional time to be with God, we tune our spiritual ears to His voice. In the stillness and quiet, we become more attuned to His guidance and direction. It is in these moments of listening that we gain clarity and discernment, enabling us to walk confidently in His will.
Spending quality time with God is essential for our spiritual well-being. It allows us to grow in faith, be refreshed, find encouragement, and express our gratitude. Let us prioritize these moments of connection with our Heavenly Father, knowing that in His presence, we are transformed and empowered to live out our faith more fully.
“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty”. “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty”
Psalm 91:1
William Lynn Hamilton
Although our Families hail from different segregated soils in the South, have different names and are of different shades we are grounded in our faith in God. For you it was by faith that we were uprooted by our humble Southern beginning and planted in what was then unknown and underdeveloped soil in the North.
If was in this Northern soil that we planted our families, our lives, our hopes and dreams believing that God would give the increase. From this soil we have harvested generations of greatness.
This soil we have been blessed the nation with Leaders, Businesswomen, Businessmen,
Musicians, Actors, Athletes, Entertainers, Educators, Laborers, Politicians, Preachers and influencers in every walk of life. From this soil came grounded, God fearing, family men and women of diverse colors, cultures, and creeds. Our differences make stronger.
By faith these families that were uprooted and planted in the north have produced fruit that is still nourished but the ties and traditions of their original Southern Soil.
May God forever bless your Family. May your Family remain united in love and forever growing in Fatih. Just like a tree planted by the rivers of water, our Family and Faith shall not be moved.
