Music Makes You Smarter Did you know that playing a musical instrument is scientifically proven to improve learning abilities in children? Studies show that playing music can significantly enhance the brain. It also builds confidence, self-discipline and creativity. Plus there are proven social benefits too. It isn't just children who learn instruments like the piano or guitar who benefit, percussion instruments like simple shakers or tambourines can have a very positive effect on the development of young children. According to research undertaken by the University of Central Florida, "young children with developed rhythm skills perform better academically in early school years". The continued academic benefits of learning a musical instrument stretch far beyond primary school. Research also shows that children

who played musical instruments performed significantly higher in standardised tests, than their non-musician peers. A study of medical school applicants found that music students were the most likely group of graduates to be accepted to study medicine. Welcome to Kids Direct and our very first Liverpool issue . Kids Direct is published by parents for parents and has been established in the North West for over 20 years successfully connecting families with local services and events in Wirral, Chester, Warrington and North Wales. We are very excited about reaching Liverpool and really hope you will enjoy our Summer 2012 magazine. In this issue, we have 5 fantastic competitions for you: Dawsons Music in Liverpool are giving away a Stagg percussion set in a free prize draw (page 3). They are also offering free trial lessons on keyboards, guitar and ukuleles and if that wasn’t enough they are offering a 20% discount on selected instruments (page 2). We also have great competitions with Legoland Discovery Centre, Camelot, David Lloyd in Speke and the National Wildflower Centre in Knowsley. With the summer holidays upon us and the new term approaching, our calendar of events should give you plenty of ideas for things to do over the next few months and as the Olympics are here, don’t miss our great interview with Chris Boardman (Olympic cycling gold medallist). WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre has launched a brand new adventure play area: Rushes Play Space. The play area involves climbing structures, tree houses, swings, slides, sand pits and waterplay around a central boardwalk for adults to sit and relax in beautiful surroundings. The design reflects Martin Mere's focus on the environment and natural play allowing children ages and abilities to play in a social and safe environment. Features include: ● Mini marshlands - Toddler play space with swings, see-saws, play houses and wobble dishes. ● The wetlands - water play space with dams, bridges and channels to explore. ● Fly like a bird across a cableway. ● The reed bed - giant timber sculptures with nets and ropes for climbing, jumping, sliding and clambering. ● Giant tree house - climb up the nets into the giant tree house and fly down the slide. ● The sand flats - sand play area with playful grassy mounds and smooth boulders.
