Phyllis Merrifield, Co-ordinator for Seaford U3A Orchestra Phyllis, who is 98, has lived in Seaford for 40 years and has been in her current role for 24 years, building the orchestra from 3 to 35 players. Before she retired, she worked as a primary school teacher and as a lecturer in child development. Not only does she play piano and percussion, she also plays with the U3A recorder group. She is also a member of Cross Way Church. Phyllis was educated at North London Collegiate School and Bishop Otter College, Chichester. She is widowed with two daughters, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. What are your hobbies and interests? Reading, Crosswords, Tapestry, Classical Music. What is your favourite piece of music? Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto. What is your favourite film? Rebecca. What book are you reading at the moment? Belgravia by Julian Fellowes. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Taking part in family gatherings. What is the first line of your favourite poem? Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. What has been your most embarrassing moment? Falling over in the shower and asking for help getting up. Where is your favourite place to go in Seaford and why? Crouch Gardens because it is peaceful and aesthetic. What makes you sad? Children suffering.

What is your greatest extravagance? Chocolate. What is your greatest fear? Falling. Which living person do you most admire? The Queen. What is your favourite smell? Roses. What is the best advice you have ever been given? Try to put things right yourself before seeking help. Which person in history would you most like to meet? Frances Mary Buss who was a pioneer in promoting women’s education. She founded my school in 1850. What or who is the greatest love in your life? My husband and family. What would your motto be? Keep smiling.
