GRAYS HARBOR COMMUNITY HOSPITAL
Making communities better places.
When Seabrook founders Laura and Casey Roloff first came to the Washington Coast in 2002, they saw that the area had many economic challenges after the core industries relating to timber had been reduced to almost nothing.
Struck by the beauty of the rugged Washington Coast, they had a vision to build a new beach town. Along with it came the idea to give back to the neighboring communities and they created what today is the Seabrook Community Foundation. “We simply wanted to leave the surrounding towns and villages in a better place than when we came to this coast in 2002,” said Laura Roloff. “We decided to use Seabrook as a vehicle to improve the lives of others in and around Grays Harbor. We have appointed a board made up of local residents as well as Seabrook residents with specialized backgrounds to ensure that these funds are put in the right places. They have been doing a great job.” For each property that is sold at Seabrook, 1% of the sale goes to the
Seabrook Community Foundation. That money is then awarded to non-profit organizations within Grays Harbor County.
The foundation was built to partner with local non-profits in an effort to expose them to a larger audience using Seabrook as their stage. The Foundation not only supports infrastructure improvements for local non-profits, but sponsors events that bring even more attention to their causes thus attracting more contributions. The hope is that these community events will give people more reasons to come to the Washington Coast. This not only has a positive economic impact on surrounding businesses but also raises more awareness to the needs of this coastline. Last year, approximately $80,000 was awarded, said Foundation president, Mim Groesse. To date the Seabrook Foundation has accumulated over $1 million dollars. Some of these dollars have been deployed already to the community and the board continues to review grant requests that match
mission of the goals of the Foundation.
The Foundation is comprised of six members. Groesse who resides in Pacific Beach, Paul Dockendorf of Moclips, Tim Kerr and Jeff Feldman of Seabrook and Seattle, Helen Gilbert of Pacific Beach and Britta Folden of Aberdeen. The Foundation board has hired Seabrook homeowner Jim Whitney as administrator. The members meet quarterly and discuss the merits of each application. So far this year, the Foundation has granted $10,000 to Habitat for Humanity and $15,000 to the Grays Harbor Community Hospital Cardiac Care Campaign. Seabrook also partnered with Grays Harbor Habitat for Humanity for a women’s build and ladies tea. Just recently in June, the Grays Harbor Community Hospital sponsored Seabrook’s “We HEART Dads” fun run during Father’s Day weekend. More than 100 runners showed up for the run.
