Seabrook Community Foundation Giving back to the wider Grays Harbor community has been a Seabrook priority from very early on. In 2007, the Seabrook Community Foundation was formed by Seabrook founders Casey and Laura Roloff and ever since, it has operated as a separate entity to help in all areas of Grays Harbor County. Each time a house is sold in Seabrook, the seller of the home donates 1% of the selling price to the Seabrook Community Foundation. Homeowners have also pooled resources to purchase a penny press, which resides in the Seabrook Kids store and provides a fun way to collect money for the Foundation. The Foundation funds are then provided to the community as scholarships for individuals and as grants for organizations. That is where the magic begins: Ten thousand summer lunches were provided to kids in rural areas. Our secretlyknown Hidden Coast Scenic byway will soon be labeled with brand new signage. The North Beach Museum is building a new museum with the Foundation’s assistance. Elementary kids spent time exploring a tall ship in Grays Harbor. There are truly too many stories to tell of organizations who are helping people with the Foundation’s help: a list of grant recipients may be found on the Foundation’s website. The Seabrook Community Foundation Board of Directors is lucky to have a diverse group of Seabrook homeowners and residents from North Beach and Grays Harbor County. They are passionate about the people, history, culture, and the overall wellbeing of these areas. Traditionally, the focus for the Foundation has been support for emergency and human services that include food banks, shelter and safety, children’s lunch programs, and the arts. Grants are also provided for animal welfare, youth recreational activities, historical preservation and other community based projects. Welcome to Seabrook! On behalf of everyone at Seabrook – staff, merchants, guests, homeowners and neighbors – I’d like to thank each and every one of you for making Seabrook what it is today. The vision for our future is being implemented daily and now is a very exciting time to be a part of Washington Coast’s beach town. Over the course of the past year, we have added the Farm District neighborhood, a world-class beach volleyball tournament, four new businesses and we have broken ground on our Town Center. The Town Center will feature an ocean view from almost all of our Main Street shops and live-work units. Over the past year, we have sold more than 46 homes and opened one oceanfront model home and will open another in the Farm District this fall. Business is strong in Seabrook! We couldn’t have done all this without all of you. Within these pages, we have compiled a showcase of Seabrook stories and tried to capture the spirit of what Seabrook means to us – a vibrant beach community. Ruby Beach is one of Washington State’s most beautiful and rugged stretches of the Olympic National Park where a short, winding hiking path takes you down to a coastline unlike any other in the state. Its beaches are blanketed with tumbled rocks and enormous surf-tossed logs, deposited on higher ground during stormier months (word of caution, watersoaked logs are extremely heavy and can become dangerous when rolling in the surf. Never turn your back on the surf). At the end of your exploration, return to your Seabrook basecamp for a campfire s’more, a carefree meal, or a sunset cocktail at your local favorite eatery.

Know before you go. Tips for an easy trip! Make sure your car is fully charged or gas tank is full or you have taken advantage of Seabrook’s electric car charging station. Most trails are dogfriendly in Olympic National Forest – leashing and pet waste retrieval mandatory. Dogs are only allowed on Rialto Beach, Kalaloch beaches – Ruby to South Beach and Peabody Creek Trail. Dogs are allowed anywhere you can take your car in Olympic National Park, but not on trails.

its all about bikes Everywhere in Seabrook you find bikes. Mostly beach cruisers – which you can rent at Buck’s Bikes. But there is also a culture of mountain biking, of which you may not be aware. Heading out into the Mill District there are little-known trails that connect to a larger circuit reaching as far as Copalis Beach and Ocean Shores. You may acquire a full map at Cottage Rentals or at Buck’s Bikes or log on to the Strava app for the complete, available information. But the crème de la crème is the loop that is accessible south of Seabrook off of Highway 109.

referred to as the Mike-O-Rama loop – named after our passionate homeowner, Mike Marino who spear-headed the project. It was carved out by Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance, under the direction of Kevin Kelly, and director, Mike Westra. To get to the loop, head south on Highway 109 out of Seabrook until you come to a dirt road just round the bend. It’s an uphill trek to get there, but worth it. The trail combines a heavily forested trail with a sweet ocean view of the Pacific Ocean half-way through. The loop only takes about 5-minutes, but it is well-worth repeating. Combine it with other trails for an extended ride. Maps available at Seabrook Cottage Rentals and Buck’s Bikes.

Going clockwise you fly through the flowing rollers, past through the dark forest and out of a tunnel of overgrowth. Rusty Anchor offers day, month, and year-long memberships on all state-of-the-art, Pre-Cor equipment. Owner Brian Evans leads summer boot camps, fun runs, and January goalsetting workshops in an effort to keep all of us in shape. Buck’s Bikes is your go-to for outdoor activities. You will not only find bikes but skimboards, wetsuits, tennis and pickleball racquets for rent year-round as well. Work out in the gym, run on the beach and then head back to the Farm District for tennis, pickleball and basketball. There is even an adjustable hoop for kids. If you’re looking for more laid-back activities,

Buck’s Bikes has you covered as well. Outdoor games such as croquet, shuffle board, Bocce ball, backyard Jenga, ladderball and cornhole can be checked out by guests and homeowners on a first-come, first-served basis. Stop by Rusty Anchor Fitness and Buck’s Bikes, take a swim in the indoor pool, or visit the playground for kids of all ages. There are multiple health events throughout the year at Seabrook, but Father’s Day weekend takes the cake. Plan to visit (and participate in) our annual AVA Beach Volleyball Tournament, when more than 100 semi-pro, junior and local amateur teams come to Seabrook to win big prizes. With 20 sand volleyball courts, there is plenty of action to go around.

Grant and Ellen Melocik greet guests into their oceanfront home in stocking feet – a Seabrook tradition.

ix pairs of brightly-colored Nike tennis shoes are neatly arranged in the mudroom cubbies. They all belong to Ellen and she wears a different pair each day, depending which daily route they take around Seabrook: a walk on the beach, a hike through the forest or a stroll through town. But, she confesses, color coordination may play a deciding factor in choosing at times. Aesthetics are important to the Melociks and are evident in their choice of décor – blue hues with complimentary orange accents are repeated throughout the house and create the feeling of the ocean sunset each and every day.

The Melociks found Seabrook after reading the Sunset Idea Town article and they immediately put themselves on the mailing list, realizing from their California experience, that if you find a good deal, you’ve got to jump on it. And this is exactly what they did. While Ellen was still teaching English, in 2013 Grant flew to Washington state to buy a piece of property. He called Ellen to say he had chosen what his agent, Robyn Roloff, called “the best oceanfront property” in Seabrook – a midblock corner with a 180-degree view of the ocean. Fast forward three years. They are now

mostly retired. Mostly. Grant still works as a technical sales rep, selling switches for fancy motorcycles and battery chargers which include big, high-powered fast-chargers for electric cars. He thinks he has a fast-charger that may be of interest to Seabrook which will be able to charge visitors’ cars in less than one-half hour. Stay tuned! Retired from being a high school literacy consultant, Ellen spends her time teaching piano and has elected to be the fulfillment arm of her daughter’s online business newheeltips. com – a website which offers high-heeled fashion solutions. Shoes and fashion are a recurring theme with Ellen.

Grant and Ellen agree that sitting in one of two orange rockers on the deck, with their feet up on the banister, is their favorite thing about living in Seabrook. The Melociks met in college at Ohio State and display their roots on the walls with a collection of artwork from Cincinnati-based, Mad Men-era graphic artist, Charlie Harper. Harper’s modernistic style shows depictions of nature simplified, in the most complex way. Harper’s work lacks detail yet is striking, much like the Melocik home in its clean simplicity and well-thought-out composition and use of color. Harper’s art occupies the entire carriage house, aptly called Lady Bug, a recent addition to Seabrook’s Cottage Rental program. Half of the walls in the main house display Harper, the other half is reserved for a collection of WWII Japanese prints from Ellen’s grandfather. Three favorites, called the “Pearl Divers,” depict three females with oyster shells which they plucked from the ocean. The three prints occupy one of two guest bedrooms on the second floor. Along with the artwork, only the essentials inhabit the home. These essentials include only a few items brought from their last home in Fresno, California: an extensive 300-piece China set belonging to Ellen’s Aunt Mary and in the kitchen a humorous knife block situated so that it guards Ellen’s pride of the house, the induction range. Other interesting treasures which occupy space

in the house include a small collection of rocks and a prom dress. Three pieces of childrens’ art – one from each of their three kids – are displayed on one wall of “Riley’s Room,” a special place they have reserved for their 3-year old granddaughter when she visits. They also love their attic media room and all the en suite bathrooms which include steam showers and heated floors. But the best space is the bath on the third floor, attached to the “cloud room,” a full tub overlooks the ocean, complete with remote-controlled blinds.

Then Grant cut in, “I told her she was worth five pianos.” From the piano, looking through the windows is the deck. It sits atop a bluff, fronting the Pacific Glen Esplanade. Grant and Ellen agree that sitting in one of two orange rockers which occupy the deck, with their feet up on the banister, is their favorite thing about living in Seabrook. Each night they count ship lights. The most in a night: 13.

Though these areas may be their favorite parts of the house, one cannot help but notice something a little more spectacular: the white, baby grand piano – a surprise gift from Grant to Ellen years ago, somewhere in the middle of raising three children. Situated on the main floor, it commands attention as it overlooks the ocean. “My teacher, Ms. Weiss, had five pianos. Students began learning on an old upright and then advanced through the various quality increasing instruments until the fifth piano, which was a white, concert Steinway. “I didn’t make it there. I ended my lessons on the fourth piano – a lovely concert Bechstein – but not the Steinway.”

SURF FISHING TIPS • If you go fishing in the ocean, the first thing to remember is to always be safe. Tell someone where you are going and better yet, fish with a friend.

• You need a good pair of

waders and a spinning rod and of course, a fishing license.

• The best time to fish,

according to Grant is at slack tide and thereafter.

• Grant catches and releases Grant enjoys fishing for surf perch just steps from his Seabrook home.

scratch map — kind of like a scratch lottery ticket, only the reverse is true. Each time you win – by taking a vacation – you scratch the gold lamé off a country. For the Melociks it is the perfect map to be tacked to the wall.

The Lady Bug is one of Seabrook’s newest editions. It has a sneak peek to the ocean through a porthole window that Grant insisted the builders add during the framing stage. The Melociks are excited to share their home with travelers, as they too love to travel.

On the map, Grant, points out his bucket list location, the Kamchatka River in Russia. “The best fishing spot in the world,” he says. “The fish are so big, they eat mice that fall into the river.”

Their next stop: Japan. “Some people buy things. We travel,” says Ellen. In the corner of their media room, a third floor attic cave – designed to eliminate the light from clearstory windows when viewing their 72” TV – is displayed what Ellen calls her “white elephant gift.” For some, it would be a kitschy

Ellen looks at the map, three-fourths of it still under the metallic foil. “There’s still so much to see, I hope I live long enough.” But for them, they are also pretty happy at home. Ellen and Grant both like to say, “Out of ten stars, we give Seabrook a twelve.”

SUNSET MAGAZINE IDEA TOWN Being named the first ever Sunset Magazine “Idea Town” was a big milestone in our young town’s history. When Seabrook first introduced itself as a beach town in 2004, few could have visualized a community large enough to warrant such a lofty title. Yet just nine years later, one of the nation’s leading lifestyle magazines recognized that Seabrook is just that – a true town in the making. What was an annual, showhome project for Sunset Magazine turned into the first ever Idea Town – two stunning oceanfront homes created by design aficionados with beach lovers in mind. The mix of modern yet casual features make the Red Sunset House one of Seabrook’s main landmarks. Next door, the Blue Sunset Home fits the more traditional architecture of the Northwest Glen neighborhood while seamlessly fitting in with the Idea Town concept. A vibrant, spacious courtyard united the two homes and offered a one-of-a-kind area for outdoor living at the beach. Seabrook and Sunset Magazine worked with Peter Brachvogel of BC&J Architects to design the homes, while renowned Seattle designer Brian Paquette brought the interior to life with his unique touch. A striking courtyard garden, designed by Seabrook’s very own Stephen Poulakos, welcomes you to the homes.

n the spirit of great American towns and towns all around the world, an important aspect is a place where people can gather. Seabrook’s Town Hall is a timeless piece of classic architecture. The bell tower which reaches 50-feet into the skyline is also the terminating vista for our soon-to-be-complete Main Street. By design, the Town Hall is Seabrook’s civic building which provides a place for people to gather, to exchange ideas, perform school plays, celebrate weddings and family reunions and more.

Accommodating leisurely retreats, weddings, formal dinners or board meetings, Town Hall is located within walking distance from all Seabrook neighborhoods, restaurants and shops. The hall is equipped with tables, chairs, linens, plates, glassware, and audio and visual equipment. You may also prepare meals in the state-of-the-art commercial kitchen, or hire one of our local caterers to do it for you. If you are looking for something a little more informal, Seabrook’s event tent at Crescent Park is great for cook-outs, team building events and wedding receptions.

With three floors that can accommodate 120 people, and 38-foot tall ceilings reaching past the mezzanine, it is a great place for gatherings.

HORSESHOE PARK Outfitted with an inviting, sunken fire pit and a perennial display garden to come, Horseshoe Parkâ€™s large lawn is perfect for a wide variety of events and games. Expect blossoms in the spring of 2017 from the flowering cherry trees, which will be planted in the fall of 2016 and will encircle the park. ORCHARD AND BERRY PATCH In addition, an orchard and berry patch have already been planted directly opposite the rustic Wind Gate Equestrian horse barn. The orchard will surely be a popular place for weddings and other casual events. While these are just a few of the amenities in the Farm District, there is more excitement planned! COMMUNITY GARDEN In the early stages of design, a space for a community garden was set aside. The community garden will allow Seabrook residents to participate in the gardening of this special spot. Longer term plans for the garden include a small greenhouse, a tool and potting shed, and a series of planting beds. We are planning to prepare beds in the fall of 2016 for planting in spring of 2017. LONGER PATH SYSTEM You will also be able to connect to a larger cedar-mulch path system which will link to the Mill District neighborhood and then out to the Elk Creek beach trails.

North coast Montessori School Middle School is the next milestone North Coast Montessori is excited to head into its fifth year of education, growing and learning every day at Seabrook. Located above Rusty Anchor Fitness, the students and teachers have happily settled into the new classroom – an open environment with a view of the ocean, where teachers offer quality, cutting-edge Montessori education which supports each child’s whole development. This unique program takes students outside of the classroom for authentic field studies in botany, zoology, physical science, and more. Grays Harbor history is absorbed through firsthand stories and field trips. For the 2016-2017 school year – starting in September – North Coast Montessori is excited to offer a Middle School program to students in grades six through eight. Students can look forward to immersion weeks at the end of each of five cycles, in which they engage in real-world interactions with the local community through activities such as community service, internships with local businesses and more. www.seabrookwa.com

In addition, middle school students will bond and grow together through activities unique to middle school, such as an overnight trip to an outdoor education camp, public school integration through sports, and student run businesses. With two full-time, certified teachers, and two part-time teaching specialists, North Coast Montessori is dedicated to maintaining a low teacher-to-student ratio that is aligned to Common Core state standards. Ms. Jessie has 10 years of experience and is returning for her third year at Seabrook; Mr. Marc has five years of teaching at the middle school level and will begin his first year with Seabrook in the fall. Specialized programs for all students now will include swimming, fitness, music, drama, French, and art. Ms. Lindsi has been our music and drama teacher for the past four years and Ms. Carly will be teaching the swimming program. All the teachers are excited to bring their combined experiences together to the students and local community.
