Hello VCC Community

It is always busy here, and the past several weeks have been no exception. While unusual rain and hurricanes created increased attention needed to our grounds, we continue our work to make VCC better than ever and to keep you informed about “What’s Going On” behind the scenes and between our meetings. As always, if reading this brings questions, concerns, or comments to mind, please contact us at: vccmasterboard@vccgolfclub.com. Your Master Board October 2024

WHAT’S GOING ON?

We thank Steve Zielinski for his many years of service on the Master Board. He must leave the board due to ownership rules, but

has volunteered to continue to serve in support of many of our initiatives. Thank you, Steve!

1. We have appointed Michelle Suarez as a new board member at large to replace the vacancy left by Steve Zielinski. Michelle will fulfill Steve’s term which ends in March of 2025. Welcome, Michelle, and thank you for serving.

2. We thank Kristen Elliott who has agreed to serve as Secretary upon Michelle’s move. And we appreciate Kathy McElroy for serving as Assistant Secretary in Kristen’s place.

3. The new front door has received permitting and been installed

and painted. The windows provide a much safer entrance and exit as we can now see each other coming and going before opening the door.

4. We are still waiting for permits for our handrails. You can imagine how busy the Village of Estero is after back-toback storms, but our General Manager is in contact with them at least once a week to try to move our request forward.

5. The improved website is completed and will be released by the end of October. Please take some time to click around and let us know of any problems you find. We have tried to troubleshoot descriptions, directions, links, and listings, but let us know if you find a glitch. We offer a special thank you to Jim Luzzi for donating some of his absolutely incredible photographs to add color and beauty to the site.

6. We have received the finalized Reserve Study, and it has been examined in great detail by the Master Board, the General Manager, and our Finance Committee. The study is serving as an integral part of planning for VCC’s immediate needs and future projects.

7. Now that we have examined our financial status in detail, we

are ready to look at remodeling of the clubhouse, the main pool, and the patio area, as well as mobile food opportunities. The Facilities Committee will be taking the lead on this with contributions from the Ad Hoc Committee and from members. Watch your email and the website for upcoming open forum meeting dates.

8. Thanks to the hard work and many, many hours donated by our Treasurer and Finance Committee, our General Manager and staff leaders, and every single volunteer committee, we have established a 2025 budget. Our Treasurer and Finance Committee volunteers are hosting an open meeting to explain in detail every aspect of the new budget. It’s very important that members attend the meeting so we all understand our financial status.

On the Master Board, we appreciate a good tune and a sense of humor, so this month we offer lyrics from the Scorpions (1997). “The future’s in the air, I can feel it everywhere, Blowing with the wind of change.” We are excited about the future for VCC, so we’re embracing the wind of change happening here. Hope you feel the same!

Common Grounds Committee

This past year many of you have heard me, Pat Smoyer, speak about Ganoderma, a deadly palm disease. Although it has been around for many years, only a few of you recognize it. A tree can have Ganoderma for many years and we won’t even recognize it until the conks start to show near the base of the tree. Usually the fronds start dying, or drooping, and no new fronds form.

There is no good way to determine if the tree is diseased prior to the conks appearing. Once conks are discovered, the tree needs to be removed and the stump ground out. Because the disease is spread by spores, tree removal and stump grinding needs to happen ASAP.

We could lose our palms if diseased trees are ignored. This year the Common Grounds Committee spent over $30,000 for the removal of diseased palms and their roots located all around the community on Common Grounds.

Please help us eradicate the diseased trees by keeping an eye out for the conks. Should you spot a possible infected tree, fill out a RIF paper from the office or online and bring it to the office. The Common Grounds Committee will check out the tree in question to verify if it has Ganoderma. If a tree does have Ganoderma, and it is on private property, it is the responsibility of the owner(s) to have both the tree and the stump removed.

Tennis Notes

The men started their Bonita League tennis on Monday, Oct. 21 for the 70+ 6.5. That was a home match against Valencia Bonita. On Thursday, October 24, we played at home against Miromar. Both matches began at 11am.

The season will be 8 weeks and run through the week of Dec. 13th.

Wii Bowling

Fall Wii bowling took a hit from Hurricanes Helene and Milton but, just like VCC, came out strong. We were stalled at the start, but Wii flourished with lots of good sport, great scores (and some not so great) and lots of camaraderie. Fall bowling will continue each Monday until Nov. 18, 2024. Sign up yourself, a friend or a foursome in the notebook in the lobby of the clubhouse. Cost is only $2 per game and ALL monies are returned to the winning bowlers (one mystery high score and one mystery low score).

New to Country Creek? Not new to Country Creek? Watch as our dining room transforms into a seven lane bowling alley!

Winter league bowling will begin January 13, 2025, and continue through March 31. During league play, there are teams of 4 that are scheduled each week to play. Again this season, we anticipate 56 teams. If you are not part of a team, please contact Jess Rott @ 701-498-3565 and she will try to place you on a team. If that’s not possible, we are ALWAYS in DESPERATE NEED of substitute bowlers.

Cost of league play will remain at $40 per player or $160 per team. If you would like a new team name, that will be done at registration. More information regarding registration and Captains’ meeting will be in an email.

Have fun this season!

Care Bears

Care Bears is an organization at the Villages at Country Creek that is totally free to our residents. It is run through the goodness of our residents that have donated many wonderful medical equipment pieces to be loaned out to those of us in need. Again, it is free. If you are in need of a wheelchair, walker, seated walker, knee scooter, shower chair, commode, crutches or cane, we should have one available for your temporary use.

We also provide transportation to doctor visits when we can, or shopping for groceries that you may need. Please allow us time to coordinate any trips you might need.

SPINACH SALAD

Attention HOA Presidents—

I have new information sheets to be placed in your bulletin boards at your mailboxes or at the bulletin board at the swimming pools. Please call me (Karen @ 217-220-0626) and I will be sure to get these important notices to you.

To update our records for volunteers, please contact Karen Dougherty at 217-220-0626 if you are willing to drive members of our

A History of the Villages at Country Creek

The May issue of The Villager included a short history of The Villager itself. With the knowledge that we have many new members, the Villager staff will continue a look back at where we came from by reprinting over the next few months some of the articles from “A Short History of the Villages at Country Creek” compiled in 2013 by Mary Ann Moyer and others. This year a celebration of VCC’s 35th birthday is scheduled for December 12. Details will be

forthcoming, but the event will include Glow Golf and activities at the clubhouse.

And so, we begin . . .

THE EARLY YEARS–1900–1987

In the early 1900s, cattleman millionaire, Daniel Augustus Green Floweree, came to Fort Myers from Montana and bought land in Alva and in Estero to grow citrus crops.

At one time his Estero and Alva groves, combined, were the largest individually owned citrus grove operation in Florida—some say in the whole United States. The story of Villages at Country Creek begins on property that was once Floweree’s Estero citrus grove.

Floweree’s home was not on the Estero property. While his mansion was being built on First Street in Fort Myers next to the Burrough’s house, he rented the Thomas Edison home. The Floweree mansion was torn down in the 60s.

Among the structures Floweree built in Estero in 1902 were a hunting lodge on the north branch of the Estero River and a packinghouse on the south branch. The north branch runs behind Blacksmith Forge. The south branch runs by the clubhouse and first tee. The women workers lived on the second floor of the packinghouse. (Pilings remain at the site.) The location on the river was chosen since fruit was shipped out by boat. Even though the river was sometimes difficult because of sandbars along the way, boats were still a better means of shipping because roads were impassable in those days. The lodge became the on-site supervisor’s house and remained until the 1970s.

Forbes Horne was the last on-site manager of the Floweree Grove. Other members of his family preceded him as managers. Dorothy Horne Evrard, the daughter of Forbes and Helen Horne was born there and still lives today on River Ranch Road.

The Floweree citrus operation was the largest, but there were other smaller citrus groves in the area. They, too, would become part of VCC. One grove was the 30-acre

“Joy Farm” that was situated in the area of the present entrance to the Villages at Country Creek. It was owned by R.G. Collier, who served as a Lee County commissioner from 1909 to 1914. He was involved in a major issue in those days—the need for a good hard road from Naples to Fort Myers to replace the existing sandy two-track road. For financial reasons, Lee County was not able to complete its portion of the Tamiami Trail. (The Fort Myers to Naples section of the Trail was completed in late 1926 and the entire Tamiami Trail in 1928.)

In early 1953, the Floweree property and other small groves were acquired by the Winter Park Land Company headed by the influential heiress

Jeannette Genius McKean. In the 70s the land company rented the Estero property to a group of investors from Alva who cleared the land and tried to raise avocado trees but failed.

In March 1985 Weiner Homes, a New Jersey company, purchased 283 acres in Estero. After zoning approval and a tree survey were completed, Lee County granted the final development order. In May 1987 Weiner Homes finally took title to the site and began construction on a new community infrastructure and golf course, soon to be called the Village at Country Creek.

NEXT MONTH: THE NEW COMMUNITY 1987-1990

Residential Safety –How to Deter Thieves

While most of us know the basics of home safety, it was pleasant and informative to hear Sheriff Representative Heather Turco remind us of them. And we learned some new things as well. The Residential Safety–How to Deter Thieves presentation took place on Tuesday, October 15 at the clubhouse. Approximately 35 residents attended. The presentation focused on our homes, valuables, vehicles, and neighborhood contacts. Among the tips were:

• Keep doors and windows always locked.

• Keep your garage door closed.

• Use alarms and/or cameras and keep blinds/drapes closed at night and open during the day.

• Never hide keys outside.

• Do not mention travel plans on social media.

• Keep shrubs and trees trimmed (so no one can hide in or behind them).

• Shred important documents.

• Store valuables in a safe place other than the master bedroom (this is where thieves look first).

• Keep an inventory of valuables–either a list, video, or photographs (including serial/model numbers).

• Attach trackers on bicycles, golf carts, even wallets.

• Always lock your car and remove valuables.

• Know your neighbors and communicate with them.

• Report suspicious people, behavior, and vehicles (239-477-1000).

• Report a crime in progress or an emergency by calling 911.

• If you spot someone/something suspicious, focus on identifying a person from the top down (hair, clothing, shoes) or for a car, focus on color, dents, decals, and other identifying elements.

Criminals hate lights and noise or attention–they do not want to risk being caught. They dislike dogs, nosy neighbors and they look like an “average person.”

Thanks to Raphael for scheduling this presentation and to Heather Turco and the Sheriff’s Department for bringing it to us.

Stay safe everyone.

HEATHER TURCO

Oktoberfest, October 4, 2024

The start of our Fall season began with an Oktoberfest party in the Clubhouse on a rainy Friday evening. The Clubhouse was beautifully decorated with Octoberfest décor and filled with people ready to enjoy the menu of soft pretzels, pork schnitzel and sauerbraten, as well as apple strudel with ice cream for dessert, all prepared by Chef Kwaze. As usual, Rafael did a marvelous job!

There was a live band rather than a DJ, and all were having a wonderful time enthusiastically dancing to the music. There were even individuals dressed in Lederhosen.

Resident Directory News

Now that VCC is using a digital form of the resident directory, there is a very easy way to access it and some other important information on your phone through Clubhouse Online. The Clubhouse Online Mobile App can be found in your phone’s App Store and on both Google Play and Apple.

Download the app and you’re all set! Once you open the app, scroll down to find Villages at Country Creek. Login information will be the same Username and Password as the one you use on the VCC Website.

When you login, you will have three areas to choose from: Events, Roster, and Statements. Events will list upcoming calendar events at VCC. Roster is the up-to-date resident directory and can be searched by either name or address. For example, you can search by first name, last name, house number or street name. Statements allows you to view your current balance/statement and past statements.
