Greetings Neighbors, As we move into the heart of summer, midJuly to mid-August brings both sunshine and the peak of hurricane season. Your safety and well-being are our top priorities, so let’s make sure we’re all prepared!

Now’s the time to finalize your hurricane preparedness plan. Don’t wait until a storm is on our doorstep! Do you have at least a three-day supply of water, nonperishable food, medications, and a first-aid kit? Don’t forget batteries, chargers, and flashlights!

Refresh your memory on local evacuation routes and designated shelters, including options for your beloved pets. Discuss 2

with your family how you’ll communicate if cell service is down; having an out-ofstate contact is a smart move. Secure any loose outdoor items, trim back overhanging tree branches, and ensure your windows are protected. Take a moment to review your home and flood insurance policies. If you have a generator, remember to always operate it outdoors and far away from windows to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Finally, bookmark local emergency management websites and sign up for severe weather alerts to stay informed.

While we’re vigilant about storm season, let’s also enjoy the best of SW Florida summer!

Our beautiful sunshine comes with serious heat. Remember to hydrate frequently, even if you don’t feel thirsty, and apply sunscreen generously. Seek shade during peak hours, and if you need a break from the heat, look into local cooling centers. And please, never leave pets or children in a parked car!

Mark your calendars for some wonderful opportunities to connect with your neighbors! Remember to join in on the Ladies’ Luncheon, Coffee, Tea, and Chat, and the Men’s Breakfast. See the community calendar for full details on dates, times, and locations for all these gatherings.

Whether you’re enjoying our community pool, heading to the beach, or out on the water, safety first! Always supervise children around water and be aware of rip currents at the beach – know how to escape them if caught. If boating, ensure everyone has a life vest and understand basic boating safety rules.

Even with the summer heat, your garden can thrive! Focus on heat-tolerant plants like bougainvillea, plumbago, and ixora.

Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation, and keep an eye out for common summer pests.

FIREWORKS AND FINANCES: TIME FOR YOUR MID-YEAR MONEY CHECK-IN July – a time for barbecues, beach days, and fireworks – lots of fireworks. But while you’re dodging mosquitos and perfecting your potato salad recipe, there’s one more thing that deserves a mid-summer spark: your finances.

Yes, we’re halfway through the year, and it’s the perfect time to ask, “How are my finances really doing?” If the answer is “I have no idea,” don’t worry. You’re not alone – and you’re not too late.

Review Your Goals: Are They Still On Track?

Remember those goals you set back in January? You know, the ones made with hopeful enthusiasm for the new you in the new year? Now is the time to dust them off. If you planned to save $12,000 this

year and have only saved $2,000 – you’re a bit behind. But the good news? You’ve got six months to course-correct. Adjust your savings strategy, reassess your goals if needed, and, most importantly, forgive yourself for that spontaneous new TV that you just had to buy because your team made it to the Super Bowl.

Tax Planning: It’s Not Just For Accountants No one wants to talk taxes in the summer – except your future self, who will thank you for planning ahead. Mid-year is a great time to do the following: Review your withholdings; estimate your potential tax liability; and look at opportunities for tax advantaged savings like IRAs and/or HSAs. If you had major life changes – got married, had a baby, changed jobs, or started a side hustle – you may want to update your tax strategy now, not scramble in April.

Investment Portfolio: Rebalance Like A Pro Not A Panic-Seller Markets move, and so does your asset allocation – sometimes without you realizing it. If your original plan called for a 60/40 stock-to-bond ratio and it’s now looking more like 75/25, it’s time to rebalance.

Rebalancing isn’t about timing the market.

It’s about maintaining your plan and managing risk. It’s the financial equivalent of getting a haircut before things get too wild.

Bonus tip: Use this time to harvest any losses for tax purposes or to reassess your risk tolerance if the past few months have made you queasy.

Emergency Fund: Your Financial Airbag If you dipped into your emergency fund this year, it’s time to replenish. If you haven’t started one yet, let this be your nudge. A good rule of thumb? Aim for three to six months’ worth of living expenses. And remember: A true emergency fund is not a vacation fund in disguise.

Final Thoughts: Your Financial Freedom Isn’t On Autopilot A solid financial plan is like a GPS – it helps you get where you’re going, but only if you check it once in a while. MORNING STRETCH MONDAY, WEDNESDAY AND FRIDAY – 8 TO 8:30 A.M. AND 8:30 TO 9 A.M.

There are two, half-hour stretch segments. It’s an excellent way to work all the different parts of the body while improving your balance, coordination and strength. It uses your own resistance as we strive for total body toning and fitness.

Each class is a cross between tai chi, yoga and Pilates. This is a great class to achieve a full stretch.

You can come to one session or both, depending on what works for you. Come and join us!

VACATION DISCONNECT When sailing on a cruise, you are assigned a fob or a cruise card. When you check in, you are provided with this item. It has your name on it and a few other details but not your cabin room, for security. You use it to enter your cabin, leave/return to the ship at ports (your photo is linked so they know it’s you). You also

could use it to buy things in the various shops, play in the casino, or purchase beverages not in a plan.

This means that your wallet and phone could be placed in the cabin safe, nothing to carry but this fob or card for full access.

In addition, you could visit the Internet café, purchase Wi-Fi access from the ship, or use data from your service provider’s plan for your own devices. In your cabin, you can watch satellite television and stay informed, or … you can do the vacation disconnect.

You need not watch the news on TV, read a newspaper, or go online.

You could just focus on what you were doing and whom you are with.

A cruise allows you to do as much or as little as you want with so many options available 18 hours per day.

Of course, there are other types of vacations in remote areas where you can do the same, but more likely, you’ll read a headline or hear some news on the car radio. Cruising makes it easier to really detach and recharge your

batteries, coming back more refreshed. And disconnecting for a week or more makes you realize how connected we are most of the time.

Technology continues to offer new options for greater connectivity to the world at large, which I think is not always such a great thing. But I still have the ability to control what I connect to, and I do.

YOUR SUPPORT IS NEEDED! As you can see from above there is a range of extremely important issues that the Engage Estero team of volunteers has been working hard to address.

We have been in touch with the Village of Estero’s management and the mayor, Joanne Ribble, who have agreed to lend support to help alleviate the impact

of I-75 being widened through Estero from six lanes to 10! We have also involved the Lee Metropolitan Planning Office and the Florida Department of Transportation as well as other traffic experts. The team has also assisted local communities with their traffic concerns and will aim to better understand the results from the Village Traffic Survey and the actions that are planned once the final analysis has been completed.

These aspects are only a part of what the organization is involved with to try to ensure we continue to enjoy our quality of life in Estero. But we cannot do it without an increase in our financial support. We are a registered 501 (c)(3) organization, and all but our webmaster and communications coordinator who runs a business are unpaid volunteers. But, there are many aspects of expenditure in what we do, including obtaining expert input, covering the costs of our communications and the information provided at our community meetings and public forums, paying for our YouTube videography, conducting podcasts and the cost for updating our equipment, setting up an emergency fund for local residents who suffer storm damage, etc.

Audit Results 2023 JOHN DETTERBECK, TREASURER, STONEYBROOK HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION

After quite some wait, we have finally received the 2023 Audit of the HOA finances. I believe that a big reason for the delay was with the state having changed the requirement for audits, more communities were forced to get one done.

The audit will be shared through our email blasts so everyone will have a chance to see the report for themselves.

I am pleased to say that our audit shows that everything has been done appropriately. And that Stoneybrook continues to be run with fiscal responsibility. The auditor did point out that the reserve account (they called replacement) at the end of 2023 was a bit too light to cover our future needs.

Having seen this, the board addressed this in the 2024 and 2025 budgets. We did a massive review of the “Five Year Plan” which shows what assets are going to be needed to be replaced or need large amounts of repair work.

Knowledge is power, and the more we understand what goes into the budget the better we can control it. I believe you will find those areas that we were in negative numbers in the 2023 financials have been addressed by reduction in contracts, with elimination of the item or small budget increases.

A budget is a plan, but as we cannot perfectly predict the future we must always be reviewing and refining our view of what is needed. Our board has worked hard to clear up old spending problems and refine the contracts we have. With our last month-end report (May 2025) we are within 1 percent of our budget on expenses and about 2-1/2 percent to the good on our overall position.

The most important part is that we stay focused on offering the best services for our residents at the most affordable prices we can.

It is unfortunate that it has taken this long to get the audit back, but this was not under our control. I recommend that if you can find the time, read through the audit as we will be back at the numbers in September for the 2026 budget.

JULY ON THE WATER As we progress into the heat of summer, fishing both inshore and offshore can still be good, just prepare for hot days and keep an eye on the weather. Many anglers prefer to get an early start and off the water ahead of the midday heat and afternoon storms.

Inshore, the mangrove snapper bite will continue to heat up. A variety of baits including shrimp, pilchards, herring, small pinfish, and cut bait will entice fish around

docks, piers, bridges, under deeper mangrove shorelines, oyster bars, sand potholes, and rock ledges in and near the passes. Mangrove snapper is one of our tastier fish and fights hard for their size. They make a great summer target. They are leader and hook shy, if the water is clear, it’s often necessary to lighten the tackle. Inshore, I go with 2 feet or more of 12- to 20-pound fluorocarbon leader and a 1/0 circle hook or smaller.

The best snook and redfish action will come on days with strong tides. They can often be

caught together around docks, shorelines, and structure around the gulf passes, as well as oyster bars and shoreline overhangs on the higher tides. Season for spotted sea trout and redfish is open, while snook season is closed. As the water warms over summer months, some of the better action for trout will come from 4- to 8-foot depths in areas with a grassy or sand/grass mottled bottom.

Calm summer mornings will give good opportunities to run offshore. To the best of my knowledge, American red snapper season is open for the month of July for those willing

to make the long run offshore. Please don’t take my word and check regulations before venturing out. It looks like both red and gag grouper seasons are closed.

For fun and fast action offshore, look for bonito and Spanish mackerel harassing bait schools in depths from 30 to 80 feet. Silver spoons or Tuna Jets in various colors can bring instant hookups when trolled around feeding activity. Watch for birds and surface commotion to locate the fish. Also look around the artificial reefs. Spanish mackerel are also plentiful around the gulf passes and inshore around schooling baitfish.

KATIE’S SLOW COOKER PULLED PORK (BBQ) Who wants to heat up the kitchen in July? Not I! Summer is here! It’s time for cookouts, barbecues, pool parties and picnics! Happy eating!

This recipe is popular with kids and adults and can be altered many ways. It makes terrific leftovers too!

6 to 8 hours to make • Serves 6 to 8 (or more) INGREDIENTS 1 2- to 5-pound pork butt/pork shoulder roast (with excess fat cap trimmed) Salt, pepper, garlic powder and your favorite allpurpose seasoning or barbecue rub 1 medium onion, thinly sliced Approximately 12 ounces liquid (apple juice, Dr. Pepper or other soda, beer, broth, etc.)

3/4 cup of your favorite barbecue sauce (more to taste and to top) (I use Sweet Baby Ray’s Honey.)

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar DIRECTIONS 1. Layer onions in bottom of slow cooker.

2. Place meat on top of onions. If necessary, cut in half to fit.

3. Season meat with salt, pepper, garlic and seasoning. (You can use any seasonings or spices you like.)

4. Add your liquid of choice and vinegar.

5. Cover and cook 8 to 10 hours on low or 6 hours on high.

6. Transfer meat to a cutting board or large bowl and pull apart into shreds using two forks or meat claws. (If there is a lot of liquid in the slow cooker, I drain most of it but save the onions.)

7. Return meat to the slow cooker.

8. Stir barbecue sauce gently into the shredded pork and onions.

9. Spoon meat on to buns with a slotted spoon or tongs.

10. Serve on your favorite rolls or Texas Toast and top with coleslaw of your choice, if desired.

VARIATIONS • In place of pork butt/shoulder you can use pork chops or southern-style spare ribs, boneless chicken (breast, thigh or both), beef (roast or cheaper steak cuts) as well.

• You can add the barbecue sauce after it’s on the buns instead, so leftovers may be used for other things.

• For tacos or nachos you can use peppers (fresh or jarred) and no barbecue sauce. (Add cumin or packaged taco/fajita seasoning.)

• Experiment and adjust your seasonings, sauces and liquids to change flavors for tacos, fajitas, hoagies, Phillys, etc.

This time of year, also brings a beautiful variety of seasonal vegetables, perfect for making this cool summer side dish! This fresh versatile salad is sure to please.

INGREDIENTS Note: All vegetables and amounts are subject to your taste; they can be omitted or increased to your liking!

1 avocado 1 small can quartered artichoke hearts, drained ½ pound fresh asparagus, quick steamed 1 small cucumber, peeled, halved, seeded and sliced 1 red, yellow or orange bell pepper 1 cup white button mushrooms, sliced 1 small yellow summer squash, halved and sliced 1 small zucchini, halved and sliced 10 to 15 grape or cherry tomatoes, halved ½ cup red onion, quartered and thinly sliced

DRESSING 1 package Good Seasons Garlic and Herb Salad Dressing and Recipe Mix ¼ cup balsamic vinegar 3 tablespoons water ½ cup neutral oil DIRECTIONS 1. Quick steam the asparagus in the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes, just enough to crisp and brighten a bit. Let cool before chopping.

2. Chop and slice all veggies into bite- size pieces (I like mine ⅛- to ¼-inch thick).

3. Mix all vegetables, except avocado, in a large bowl.

4. In a separate bowl or cruet make dressing mix according to package directions, substituting the regular vinegar with balsamic vinegar.

5. Pour the dressing over the chopped vegetables and toss lightly.

6. Add the avocado and incorporate gently as not to smash it.

7. Refrigerate 1 to 2 hours.

8. Gently toss again before serving.
