Community Interests BUTTERFLY CLUB NEWS DUANE PARKINSON, HERONS GLEN

Spring is here, and I’m sure that you’ve noticed many more butterflies flitting around the beautiful flowers in your yards! Warmer temperatures mean many more butterflies are going through their metamorphosis stages, ultimately hatching out into adult butterflies. Then, of course, they flit off in search of nectar for food. Mama adult butterflies only live for about two to three weeks. In this time, the hundreds of eggs she lays on the host plant turn into a caterpillar larva stage, followed by the chrysalis pupa stage. Then the chrysalis changes into a beautiful adult butterfly. The male and female adult butterflies mate, mama lays the eggs, and then she dies. It’s the butterfly circle of life.

Summer also marks our own resident snowbirds return north while some of us remain here but take summer vacations. Consequently, our Butterfly Society meetings will resume on Thursday, October 9 when we have more members present. Watch for future notices for the time and meeting location.

The annual dues are $25 per person and are due at the October meeting. These dues cover some continuing garden maintenance costs but certainly not all the costs. 

And the Glen’s wonderful Butterfly Garden is seeing its share of the winged wonders also! Our Herons Glen residents are using the Butterfly Garden for many different purposes other than just watching butterflies and other insects.

Many people come to the garden just to take a few minutes and to meditate, pray, or just to relax on the benches provided in the shady, cool areas. Others come to watch the golfers on hole No. 18, across the narrow lake; watch our resident alligators; or watch the female tilapia fish compose their circular nests in the shallow edges of the lake. http://hggcc.com 9

One of the common and beautiful butterflies in our garden is called the Sulfur. You can tell by its name the probable dominant color of this butterfly – vibrant yellow, since the chemical element sulfur is yellow in color. But Sulfur butterflies can have green hues also. There are, however, many different species of Sulfur butterflies, as you can tell from the photos. The Sulfurs are a subfamily type of butterfly, with about 300 different species, of which 36 species reside in North America. They range from Mexico to northern Canada. Sulfurs are very particular about where they lay their numerous eggs – primarily on one host plant – the Cassia.

Their primary source of food is nectar from red, tubular flowers. Sulfurs prefer the tubular flowers because

they have a long straw-like proboscis to suck up the flower nectar. When Sulfurs reach down in the flower to feed, they can spread the pollen on the male stamen part of the flower onto the female pistil part to pollinate the plant. Many, many plant species reproduce in this way, aided by insects.

So, what then eats Sulfur butterflies?

Birds and other insects. Sulfurs do have a camouflage type of coloration, however, to aid them in their success to their short-lived adulthood, mating and reproduction cycle. Female Sulfurs lay their eggs normally on Cassia plants so the young caterpillars have leaves to eat that they can digest.

It’s always a good time when residents in the various neighborhoods gather to enjoy each other’s company.

And that was once again the case for the neighborhood party in The Dells, the Via Montana and Kayla Way neighborhood in the Outback area of Herons Glen.

This year’s event was scheduled for a beautiful sunny – and hot – afternoon, April 2, starting at 4 p.m., and was hosted by Rich Strout on his lot on Via Montana. About 50 neighbors braved the heat, and Tom Foster provided music for the festivities.

Before the party got underway, neighbors helped set up tables, tents and chairs. As folks arrived, they brought beverages and food to share.

Most importantly, your house needs to be prepped for a possible hurricane while you’re away.

What a wonderful opportunity to spend time with old friends and meet new ones!

Here are some of the key suggestions to consider:

PREPARING TO GO NORTH … OR EVEN AN EXTENDED LEAVE

• Make sure your yard and porches are clear of loose objects that can be blown around by high winds, including gas grills, lawn furniture, potted plants, etc. Put these items in your garage before you leave.

FROM THE HOA OFFICE

If you are planning to head north for the summer or if you expect to leave your Herons Glen home for an extended vacation trip, there are some general guidelines you should follow to be sure your house is adequately prepared.

• Secure your storm shutters before you leave; or make arrangements with a caretaker to close your shutters if a 

major storm or hurricane is forecast while you are away.

a property tax bill, or a utility bill with your name and the Herons Glen address.

• Let the HOA and HGRD know of your seasonal address and contact information. The easiest way to do this is to fill out the online form: https:// heronsglenhoa.wufoo.com/forms/q7x3s5.

Also, be sure to let them know when you return to Herons Glen.

• Notify the post office to hold your mail or have your mail forwarded to your seasonal address, or ask a neighbor to collect your mail while you are away.

• Be sure to take some identification which proves you are a Herons Glen resident in case you need to present it to law enforcement personnel before you are allowed to reenter, such as after a hurricane. This could be your driver’s license with your Herons Glen address,

• Have copies of important documents to take with you, such as wills, insurance policies, etc.

• Be sure to leave your house clean.

• If you have a humidistat, follow the instructions you have been given. If

not, leave your A/C set at 80 to 85 degrees, and replace the batteries in the thermostat. (It’s also a good idea to have your annual A/C maintenance done before you leave and change your A/C filters.)

• Consider hiring a home service or asking a friend to periodically check your residence while away.

It’s always better to be prepared than return to problems which could have been avoided. Happy summer!

• Dispose of perishable food.

• Pour a little salad oil into your garbage disposal unit and let it remain there while you are away; this will keep it from “freezing up.”

• Add several cups of water to your dishwasher after its last use; this will keep the seal pliable.

• Make arrangements for pool care, landscaping, and pest control.

• Some folks leave roach tablets under the sinks, on pantry shelves, etc.

• Unplug your TC, VCR, microwave, dryer, and other appliances.

• After the last use, clean your toilets thoroughly, flush, refill the tank and then turn off the water to the tank. Then add one cup of bleach to the water in the bowl and cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap.

• Turn off your washing machine water sources, and turn off the water main to the house. http://hggcc.com 19

FOOD TRUCK FESTIVAL DENISE FELL, HERONS GLEN

The HGRD Resident Events Committee’s Food Truck Festival was held on Monday, March 24.

It was a resounding success and brought the community together to revel in flavors from around the world. The four food trucks served over 500 delectable meals from Italy, Mexico, Greece, and the USA to our residents. The Bacio Dolce’s dessert stand stayed open late into the evening providing a sweet finale as our residents forged new connections and strengthened community bonds.

BEING PREPARED FOR HURRICANE SEASON! LINDA LYNCH, HERONS GLEN

This year National Hurricane Preparedness Week runs from May 4 through May 10, but if you’ve missed it, it’s not too late to prepare for the upcoming Florida hurricane season. The official season runs from June 1 through November 30.

But what does being prepared actually mean? Well, reading through this entire article is a step in the right direction as you start getting ready for whatever powerful summer weather comes our way.

DETAILED PLANNING

One reliable source of detailed information that you can access at the HOA website is the Herons Glen Emergency Preparedness Plan issued by the Security, Safety, and Emergency Preparedness (SSEP) Committee. Here is the direct link: https://hggcc. com/hghoa/pdfs/ssep/emergency_plan.pdf.

This HG Plan incorporates information from Lee County (also available at their website, http:/leegov. com/hurricane). Additional information is also available through the State of Florida in conjunction with the National Weather Service at their website, http://weather.gov/safety/hurricane-plan.

Regardless of what information you consult and your degree of pre-planning, it is necessary to realize that being prepared will take time and energy on your part 22

and really must be done BEFORE a hurricane strikes so you already know what you need to know and do.

SEASONAL RESIDENTS

Prior to the arrival of a storm, it is the responsibility of all residents of Herons Glen to prepare and secure their own property. If you are a winter season resident, your house and yard need to be prepared for the possibility of a storm or hurricane before you leave.

This includes assuring your yard and porches are free of any loose objects, such as grills and pottery, which could be blown about by high winds.

Securing your windows with storm shutters before you depart is also highly recommended.

YEAR-ROUND RESIDENTS

For year-round/summer residents of Herons Glen, there are a few more steps in your hurricane preparation: • Be sure to have a full tank of gas in your car.

• Put aside a gallon of drinking water per person per day of need.

• Assemble a first aid kit.

• Check to assure you have needed prescription drugs and any special medical equipment.

• Have a battery-operated radio and a flashlight available, both with spare batteries.

• Fully charge your cell phone and

consider an additional battery pack or power bank.

• Provision canned and nonperishable food and drink items.

• Gather eating utensils, a manual can opener, sanitary care items (toilet paper, etc.), mosquito repellent, plastic bags and containers, and bleach.

• Compile copies of your homeowner’s insurance policies, other important papers (wills, checkbook, tax information, credit cards, etc.), and proof of residency (driver’s license with Herons Glen address, tax receipt, utility bills).

• Consider keeping some cash on hand.

Herons Glen lies in Lee County Evacuation Zone D. It is a good idea to think through an evacuation route in advance, but you’ll need to consider the most current local information before heading out.

If you evacuate, be sure to let family or friends know where you are headed, as well as the HOA or HGRD or Security.

Information about when it is safe to return to Herons Glen will be provided via TV and radio.

HOA COMMUNICATIONS

The Herons Glen HOA will also notify residents by email news bulletins, text messaging, community channel, and the official HOA Bulletin Board.

PET OWNERS

If you have a pet, securely fasten up-todate identification on the pet’s collar, carry a photo for identification purposes, have a pet carrier (or leash or harness) to secure the pet if needed, pack food and water, and gather immunization records and medications. The HG SSEP Plan provides additional tips related to pets.

In the event of a mandatory evacuation, Lee County will designate a cat- and dogfriendly evacuation center.

EVACUATION ORDERS

It is each individual’s responsibility to comply with voluntary or mandatory evacuation orders. Evacuation decisions are made by the local government based on the severity and characteristics of a storm.

Notification is provided through numerous TV and radio stations.

LOCAL SHELTERS

For those unable to leave the area, Lee County provides shelter, at the North Fort Myers Academy of the Arts (1856 Arts Way) and the North Fort Myers Recreation Center (2000 N. Recreation Park Way off of Business 41, near the library).

While you can’t prevent a hurricane, you can avert or mitigate many of the problems that result from one. As Herons Glen residents who have sheltered through past hurricanes already know, being prepared, helping each other, and sharing information are the best ways to maximize everyone’s safety.

LUCKY LOUISE JACK NELSON, HERONS GLEN

She was only in her late teens when she was becoming a well-known artist. Her painting and drawing skills were being compared to the likes of Frida Kahlo and Georgia O’Keefe. Now in her early 20s, Louise McNeil’s achievements were winning blue ribbons in art galleries across America. She had mastered virtually every medium, and most critics agreed that her oil paintings were her forte.

Louise’s talent as an artist was recognized early in her life. As a first grader, she mastered the use of watercolors, an achievement unheard of at that age. Her art teacher was awestruck by the youngster’s results. But what captured everyone’s attention was Louise’s crayon and ballpoint pen drawing of a rainy street scene in downtown London.

The school’s principal was so enthralled by this magnificent piece of art, he had it framed and hung it in the hallway outside his office for everyone to see. This was the first public showing of the child prodigy’s work.

By the time Louise entered eighth grade, she had become adept in virtually every medium of art. She struggled with acrylics because of the fast-drying quality of the paint, but she soon conquered it, so much so, that her acrylic of a seascape took the blue ribbon at an art show in Santa Fe. An art dealer was so captivated by the painting, he offered her $10,000 for it. She gladly accepted. Louise McNeil was now a professional.

Now in her senior year, the 17-year-old Louise was cranking out an average of four pieces of art per week, and her latest pursuit was charcoal. She used her fingers as brushes, and the softening of the hard edges brought out a mesmerizing effect. After graduating, Louise was participating in art shows from New York to San Francisco. Her blue ribbons were piling up to the ceiling in her bedroom closet.

To enhance her artistic skills, Louise entered the Cooper Union School of Art in downtown Manhattan. She continued showing her work, and the board of directors of the newly formed American School of Fine Art invited her to show her work at the world-famous New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. Now Louise would be afforded the opportunity to reap financial reward for her years of toiling at her easel.

The Met reserved a whole floor to display Louise’s art. That much space was needed, since Louise would be entering over 100 paintings and drawings. The curator, Art Hall, met with Louise to decide on prices for the collection. The prices would be entered into a computer, printed out, then placed on the wall next to the appropriate piece of art.

On a desert landscape, the price was set at $350. On a portrait of Louise’s mother, an oil painting measuring 3 x 5 feet, the agreed price was $2,600. Later that evening, the museum staff placed the price tags next to the appropriate art, taking them until nearly midnight to complete the task.

It was showtime the next day. At 10 a.m.

The Met would be opening its doors to the public. By 9 a.m. there was a line a block long waiting to enter. At 9:30 a.m. Louise and Art Hall arrived, and much to their disbelief, all of the price tags had added an extra zero. The landscape was now listed at $3,500, the portrait of Louise’s mother showed $26,000, and so on. There had been a glitch in the computer’s program, which added a zero to all the prices!

Now Louise was in panic mode. What could be done to correct this monstrous blunder?

Nothing. That was Art Hall’s recommendation.

As he wrapped his arm around her shoulders, he told her that she was worth the price increases and that she’d sell out well before closing time at 5 p.m. He was right on both counts. Shortly after 2:30 p.m., the last painting was sold. The price? $370,000! After all sales were tallied, Louise had garnered over 3 million dollars! She was now a bona fide millionaire! Lucky Louise!

VOG GATHERS FOR ANNUAL END-OF-SEASON PICNIC PAM SCHEID, HERONS GLEN

It is customary for the VOG to hold its last meeting of the season on Kaidon Lane with a picnic. Like all VOG meetings, this one began with The Pledge of Allegiance.

Then the 32 picnickers filed into the garage for a delicious BBQ meal catered by Hogbody’s Bar and Grill.

The VOG will meet again on the second Wednesday in October.

However, tickets for the Veterans Day Dinner Dance on November 11 will go on sale in June.

On Friday, April 4, Herons Glen residents were treated to a FREE ballroom concert featuring popular songs from various genres.

The concert was performed by six talented musicians that also live in the community. The concert raised $780 from audience donations for the Veterans of the Glen.

Paul Lowe and Tom Foster deserve special recognition as the group relied heavily on their equipment and professional contributions. They were a significant key in making the concert a reality and ensuring its success. The group performed 21 songs that included America the Beautiful in which the audience stood and sung along, pictured below. Also, thanks to Bob McCoy for taking many pictures during the concert, including the two shown here.

The musicians included Dick Muller – mandolin, Don Lynch – acoustic guitar/ vocals, Tom Foster – acoustic guitar/vocals, Paul Lowe – electric guitar/vocals, Dan Alter – vocals/percussion, and Mike Stropes – acoustic guitar.

This was the inaugural event and per Don Lynch, the group’s organizer and spokesperson, a similar event is being planned for next season. There will be a callout for musicians interested in taking part in the next Musicians’ Showcase.

When protecting your home from wildfire you need to get your mind in the gutter.

We often say how the small things matter BIG when it comes to protecting your home from wildfire. Gutters on your home certainly fall into this category. But when wildfire happens, they become a hazard filled with dry dead leaves, pine needles and debris that give blowing embers a foothold for ignition to your home.

Keeping gutters clear of flammable debris is not only important, it’s not something you have to do once a year and then forget about.

Maintenance of your home ignition zone is an ongoing process whether it is your gutters or other parts of your property.

And that’s not the whole story. What your gutters are made of is equally important, metal gutters while more expensive and sometimes requiring additional maintenance tend to be much better under fire conditions than vinyl, which can often melt and ignite carrying fire to other parts of the structure.

NFPA, USAA, the University of California and the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, (IBHS), all have information and resources on a host of risk reduction measures, including gutters. IBHS has some specific information on building materials including gutters for fire resistance in their Best Practices Guide for Wildfire. The University of California’s Homeowner’s Wildfire Mitigation Guide is another great resource for gutter and building material information. NFPA’s Firewise website provides a list of principles for reducing wildfire risk for your home and USAA has information for its members in what they need to consider protecting their home.

The small things add up, but if you take them one at a time, utilizing the basic practices above you will be able to significantly reduce your risk. So go ahead, get your mind in the gutter.

OHIO CHALLENGE ROSE SWISHER, HERONS GLEN

Sunday, March 30 found 16 Ohio Club members at the bocce and shuffleboard courts for an afternoon of fun! Due to the low turnout of Ohio Club members, we invited some Michigan friends to participate in an Ohio-Michigan bocce challenge!

The Michigan teams of Anne and Joe Billings, Jim and Dottie Wogan, Mike and Denise Fell, Jim and Rikki Nelson took honors winning three out of the four bocce games.

The Ohio team of Lisa and Ross Thompson, Edie Ochab and Art Reiff were the winners of one game! Other Ohio Club members participating were Ron Camp, Keith Burnfield, Nancy Nudo and Gary Swisher.

IT’S FIVE O’CLOCK SOMEWHERE WINE TRIVIA 101 – PART 4 CANDACE HUETTEMAN, HERONS GLEN

In Part 3 of Wine Trivia 101, you were introduced to the sommelier who assured you that screw top wine bottles in no way indicated that the wine you had chosen was cheap. You were happy with your selection after you were told in what order to sample wines. When ready to propose a toast, the sommelier told you to take note of the “legs” on the side of the glass. “Legs!”

What could he possibly be talking about? Legs are the streaks of wine that appear after giving your wine a swirl in the glass. They are an indicator of the wine’s alcohol content. There has always been a misconception that a wine with “legs” indicates the wine’s sweetness, however this is not the case.

Generally speaking, wines with “great legs” are fullbodied and have relatively high alcohol contents.

Characteristics of great “legs” often appear on the glass as a slow drip in thick or long streaks.

Another word I wasn’t sure I understood was “full bodied” when talking about wine. Since this is Wine Trivia 101, let’s keep it simple. A fullbodied wine is characterized by a rich, weighty, and mouth-filling texture. It is often described as having a thick, viscous feel, and is typically associated with higher alcohol content, more tannins, and a more complex flavor profile.

Examples of full-bodied red wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Syrah, and Malbec. While full-bodied white wines are less common, some white wines like Chardonnay can be full-bodied, especially those aged in oak barrels.

A light-bodied wine has a higher acidity level, and a lower alcohol content, fewer tannins and less color. If you are looking for a lighter-bodied red wine, Pinot Noir is an excellent choice, and you should expect a smooth taste. If looking for a light-bodied white wine, Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc are good choices.

Will it ever end? Will I ever truly understand wine? Now I’m wondering “what are tannins?” They are found mostly in red wines. But what are they and how do they affect the taste and texture of wine? I guess I’ll have to read Part 5 of Wine Trivia 101 in the next issue of The Heron.

On March 20, 12 Alpha Delpha Alpha (ADA) Sisters traveled to Shell Point Retirement Community for a tour of their Tribby Arts Center followed by lunch at The Vue, which looks out on their golf course. The Tribby Arts Center is a world-class hub of creative and cultural activity at Shell Point that is home to theatrical, educational, and musical programming. It is a 44,000-square-foot building boasting a 400-seat auditorium and three art galleries showcasing several art forms from residents as well as regional and national artists. There are several opportunities for residents to express their passions in the studios for music, painting, pottery, photography, glass, quilting, crafts, and the performing and literary arts.

Visitors can relax in the Tribby Café, reflect in the outdoor sculpture garden, and find something special in Serendipity, the Tribby gift shop. The building is funded 100% by donations of the Shell Point residents. We had a wonderful unofficial guide who is a dear friend of one of our Sisters.

Alpha Delta Alpha, a chapter of Beta Sigma Phi (BSP) Sorority, met for their monthly meeting on Thursday, April 3. Founder’s Day was observed by reading the Founder’s Day Pledge. BSP was founded 94 years ago, and the founding ideology perseveres to this day: social, cultural, educational, and community service opportunities. Our members raise funds for local charities and donate volunteer hours every year.

Each chapter determines its own service projects and participation is voluntary. Sisters have their own strengths to contribute.

We look forward to more learning experiences next season when all our Sisters will be in the Glen.

In addition, officers for the 2025/26 year were installed. Our last meeting will be in May, and we are looking forward to summer socials to be decided for those that stay through the summer months.

ALPHA GAMMA DELTA CHAPTER NEWS NANCY THOMPSON, HERONS GLEN

As the first chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi international sorority established in Herons Glen, Alpha Gamma Delta (AGD) has developed a long history of service-oriented fundraisers supporting charities and donations through a variety of projects. Most recently, Alpha Gamma Delta hosted its annual Herons Glen Craft Fair in the ballroom of our community on Saturday, November 2, 2024. With over 47 vendors, both HG crafters and outside vendors, the ballroom was a kaleidoscope of crafts, products and colors.

Represented were artists’ original paintings,

ceramics and pottery, crafters’ knit goods, leather goods and other unique handcrafted items. The AGD chapter sisters sold their famous homemade cheddar cheese and beef/onion cheese balls and over 300 various flavors of artfully decorated chocolate, yellow, white, and spice cake balls. Raffles for $100 of lottery tickets, wine and liquor baskets, along with a Booze Buggy (you guessed it, booze!) and so many, many more, were big hits! This Craft Fair continues to be the primary fundraising project of AGD. All monies earned by the vendors’ table rental fee are donated directly to Special Equestrians, Inc, as a 501 (c)(3) charity.

Established in 1987, this organization’s mission is to enhance physical, emotional, and cognitive growth for individuals with disabilities through equine assisted activities and therapies. The organization serves people referred to Special Equestrians by doctors, therapists and teachers, “helping people one stride at a time” is the aim of Special Equestrians (website). There is a new program, Horses and Humans in Harmony, specifically designed for the personal unmounted interactions of veterans with the horses.

Our AGD chapter contributes service along with financial support to several other organizations.

We donate Bears for Cops to the local police agencies for use in situations where children or a disabled or challenged adult may find calmness and security during stressful interactions, to our Herons Glen Hearts and Homes for Veterans, and to the Glen’s annual Pretty in Pink fundraiser.

Our Alpha Gamma Delta chapter is always eager to embrace questions and provide information on our group to anyone interested joining a service-oriented group of women dedicated to sharing ourselves, our treasure and our talent, our love, with our Herons Glen community, our local community, our neighbors and our friends, for the continued celebration of people helping people. CHORUS: CONCERT AND NEWS JANET SLATER, HERONS GLEN BOB MCCOY, HERONS GLEN

The singing started even before Herons Glen Chorus members took their seats for their concert on the evening of March 23. Led by chorus director David Muir and accompanist Claudie Tweedle on piano, the sell-out audience sang You’ll Never Walk Alone as the chorus filed up the aisles, following the example of the Liverpool Football Club fans who sing the song as their team enters the stadium.

That support continued throughout the evening, fueling the enthusiasm of both the singers and the audience. Titled Musical Memories, the concert featured a range of music from old favorites (Danny Boy) and swing classics (including Blue Skies and Sh-Boom) to movie hits from Cats and Titanic, classic rock (Sweet Caroline), a tribute to fallen veterans, and a fun piece that alternated voice and kazoos. Soloists included Art Essery with Dennis DeLuca on guitar, and Ken Knop. Trudy Flanery accompanied several songs on her flute,

and Susan Atkin and Janet Bryan each conducted one of the chorus songs. The concert concluded with the chorus’ theme song, The Journey, a tribute to the spirit of our Herons Glen community.

DIRECTOR DAVID MUIR The chorus celebrated the next night with an afterglow dinner at Misto restaurant that ended with a sad farewell. David Muir, our beloved director since the chorus’ rebirth three years ago, has sold his house in Herons Glen and returned to Canada. Chorus members will always remember Dave for his positivity, fun spirit, his appreciation of our caring community, and his contagious love of music and the joy it brings to body and soul. After his announcement at Misto, Ana Ellis read a poem she wrote before knowing that Dave would be leaving. It served as a tribute both to our chorus and to our director.

It only took a day for the chorus to be blessed with a new director. Maureen Nauss, who lent her beautiful voice to the alto section for the first time this year, has years of experience directing choruses and brings enthusiasm and music expertise to lead our group. She is at her home in Michigan now, but will be back to lead the chorus for the next season that begins in early January. CORNHOLE IN HERONS GLEN STEVE CHRISTIANSEN, HERONS GLEN

Have you heard?

Cornhole was approved by the Herons Glen Recreation District Board in March to be a sanctioned activity at Herons Glen. This journey to make cornhole an activity/amenity began when the Herons Glen Resident Events Committee sponsored a Cornhole Tournament in May 2024. Due to the excitement for this tournament as shown by Herons Glen residents filling the tournament quota of 100 participants in less than 24 hours (with continued interest for two subsequent tournaments) and fun had by them at the tournament itself, a Cornhole Committee (Committee) was formed consisting of eight Herons Glen residents to develop a plan to make cornhole a sanctioned activity/amenity at the Glen. Members of this committee are Steve Christiansen, Joyce Forman, Vance Scherrer, Ron Decker, Sherri Long, Susan Wasserott, Laurie Decker, and Donna Moffat.

The Tournament Coordinators are Denise Fell and Shelly Christiansen.

After many meetings and discussions with the HGRD Board and the HGRD General Manager and his staff as well as support from the Herons Glen residents, the committee was successful in getting approval to make cornhole a sanctioned activity. The HGRD also 36

granted us approval to play cornhole on the shuffleboard courts if they are adequately protected with astroturf during play. Costs to purchase cornhole boards, bags and astroturf to protect the shuffleboard courts must be funded by donations from the residents. The committee has been working to obtain funds to purchase these items.

We are excited to begin developing our processes for Cornhole Leagues and “open play” and will communicate that information very soon. Again, thanks to the HGRD Board, HGRD General Manager and his staff and the many Herons Glen residents who made this happen.

WRAPPING UP IN PINK JANET SLATER, HERONS GLEN DENISE JOHNSON AND DICK MULLER

It was a day of fun, a day of honoring and remembering, a day of giving. A day to be Pretty in Pink.

The air was chilly on the morning of March 19 as women grabbed coffee and bags of snacks from the breakfast table at the golf range.

But the sun—and maybe the smiles?—quickly warmed things up as the full field of 136 golfers enjoyed a special “game” on each of the 18 holes in a step-aside scramble.

Many nongolfers joined the women at a luncheon following the tournament, filling tables draped in white and decorated with tall pink plumes. Dozens of beautiful raffle baskets

lined up on tables at the front of the room, waiting for the drawing of the lucky winners.

Danielle Lecavalier read her poem written for the occasion, and survivors of all types of cancer were honored in a rose presentation ceremony. Sharon Munsey, board member of Partners for Breast Cancer Care, Inc. (PFBCC), received a check representing the generosity of all who supported Herons Glen’s Pretty in Pink.

Sharon also spoke briefly, sharing information about how our donated money is used to save lives in Lee and surrounding counties.

PFBCC works with its Partners in Health, medical professionals committed to its mission, to provide breast health screenings and cancer treatment at no cost to qualified uninsured, low-income residents of Southwest Florida. The Partners in Health give care to PFBCC patients at greatly reduced rates that have not changed in 35 years. For example, for a mammogram that normally costs $472, PFBCC pays only $65 for its patients. A lumpectomy, normally $20,000, is provided for $1,000. And for those PFBCC patients requiring radiation and/or chemotherapy, each treatment normally priced at $100,000 only costs $500.

Last year these Partners in Health provided over $4.5 million in care to PFBCC patients.

Partners for Breast Cancer Care is deeply appreciative to this team of about 23 medical professionals and facilities (including Lee Health) that support its mission. And we at Herons Glen can know that each dollar we donate to Pretty in Pink goes a long way  http://hggcc.com 37

in bringing lifesaving care to needy women and men in our larger community.

This year’s Pretty in Pink events raised a total of $35,884.53. Hearts & Homes for Veterans has received $1,000 of this money, and Partners for Breast Cancer Care received the remaining $34,884. Pretty in Pink 2025 was successful because of the incredible support of our Herons Glen community.

Thank you to all the many people who served on a committee, baked for our Bake Sale, donated raffle baskets and items, sponsored a golf hole, flocked a friend, bought tickets for the jewelry or basket raffles, attended our golf tournament and luncheon, or gave their time, talent, and donations in other ways.

We couldn’t do this without you, and we are deeply grateful for your support.

Pretty in Pink is not all about the women! We are grateful for the enthusiastic support of the men of Herons Glen who not only pitched in to help but also came up with their own ways to contribute.

A large part of the money raised for Partners for Breast Cancer Care, our PIP beneficiary, comes from hole sponsorship. This year, signs at each of the golf tees that identified hole sponsors included men’s golf groups that together contributed $3,700. Then there were the Veterans of the Glen, the softball team, and other groups of men and individuals that sponsored holes in memory of or as a tribute to loved ones, in support of those battling cancer, or honoring survivors.

Cindy Matheny, chair of the Hole Sponsorship Committee, says her husband Dave was right there with her every step of the way. Other PIP committee chairs say their husbands also were a tremendous help.

Many men were out on the course at various holes, making the day even more special for the lady golfers. Several long drivers of Herons Glen soared tee shots toward the green on Hole 13 (and raised some money for extra shots), men on Hole 17 served refreshments and took photos of each golf group, guys on the par-3s measured for closest-to-the-pin, fished out errant balls, gave putting advice, and (on Hole 4) gave a 40

hole. They also provided a pink-ribboned golf ball for each of the golfers.

Did you know there were about a half dozen men who helped with flamingo flocking? They enjoyed it, too! And thank you to all the men who set up and cleaned up, and volunteered their time, talents, and resources in many other ways. We

appreciate you, guys! You all went above and beyond to support Pretty in Pink and make the event a big success.

MARBLES PATTI CUMMINGS, HERONS GLEN

What a victorious night for the ladies at the Marbles Tournament on Sunday, March 30! Although there were three sweeps that night, only one table had a photo to share (shown below). Everyone had a fun time, and the ladies should be very happy with a total of 68 wins. Men, however, are still leading with 78 wins. There’s one last chance to defeat the men’s teams, so be sure to come out to play on Sunday, April 13. As usual, doors open at 6 p.m. and each group should try to play three games.

The final matches of the 2024/25 Marbles Season were played on April 13. Seven tables of “serious” players participated in the final meet. Going into the evening, men were leading with a score of 78 wins to women’s wins of 68. Although an earnest effort was made with the women scoring 10 wins, the men pulled ahead squeaking out 11 wins! In the end, men had 89 wins and women had 78 wins.

Everyone, despite the ladies’ loss, had a fun time.

For this the last meeting, no sweeps, so no photos this time. More fun will be in store next season, so watch for announcements about the Marbles Tournament 2025/26.

On Wednesday, April 16, the Resident Events Committee sponsored the much-anticipated Tournament of Champions. The event brought out six teams of three prior jigsaw puzzle competition winners. The stakes were raised for this very talented and highly focused group.

Instead of the usual 500-piece puzzle, the champions had to complete a 750-piece

puzzle in three hours or less. All teams had the same puzzle. Only one team finished before the deadline with an amazing time of 2 hours and 32 minutes. That team, consisting of Stephanie Meirhoffer, Maryann Simpson and Karen Katz, took first place and bragging rights for this coveted title.

Eyes are focused on the Herons Glen stage, but what is happening in the back of the room is where a lot of the action takes place. Sound and light technicians work in close collaboration with the technical director, play director, and stage manager, to align their technical ability with the vision of the performance. While actors and scripts tell the story, it is the dedication of sound and light technicians that enhances the magic of live performance. Their skill, creativity, and technical expertise ensures that each performance is as immersive and impactful as

possible. Despite careful preparation, live performances present challenges that require quick thinking and adaptability.

Unexpected microphone malfunctions, as well as sudden changes in lighting needs, can test a technician’s ability to solve problems on the fly.

are crucial in following the actors. Sound technicians set up microphones, manage sound cues, and ensure that dialogue and music are perfectly balanced. Long before the show begins, the sound technician researches the special sound effects needed for the performance. They conduct sound checks to test levels and troubleshoot any potential issues. During performances, they run the soundboard and make live adjustments as needed to maintain the highest audio quality.

Facilitating clear and consistent communication between the sound, lighting, and stage manager is Technical Director Karen Jessop. You may notice her at the podium off to one side of the ballroom. She works tirelessly to ensure all the technical pieces fit together seamlessly.

She coordinates and keeps organized documentation for every performance to integrate sound and lighting technicians, as well as the stage manager backstage.

Keep in mind, all the lighting and sound technicians, as well as the technical director, are volunteers from the Herons Glen community. The next time you enjoy a Players of the Glen performance, take a moment to appreciate the invisible hands working diligently to perfect the auditory and visual spectacle unfolding before you; these technicians include: Paul Koenig (lighting for 12 years), Paul Chipman, Jeff Buxton, Bill Cashell, Steve Dahlstrom, Bob Hansford (sound for 20 44

years), Rob Dentel, Bob Herbstritt, Jeff Jensen, Bob Panek, and Jayne Schwarz. We miss one of our treasured lighting technicians, Bob Lemere, who passed away last year.

READY CLASS KAREN WILLS, HERONS GLEN

On March 28, 20 Herons Glen women trained to Respond with Empowerment & Awareness to Defend Yourself (READY). The self-defense class, sponsored by the SSEP and CERT Committees, was taught by Chelsea Long, Crime Prevention Practitioner from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

During an hour and a half class, participants were not only given key information about

their safety but were able to practice escape maneuvers.

Members were taught to know their options, including assertive verbal and physical resistance. Being alert, engaged, confident and always on the lookout for danger while being prepared with an escape plan was discussed at length. Sticking to well-lit areas and well-traveled roads and keeping your cell phone charged are also important points to remember.

The most important thing learned was that you are your own best defense, and you have the power to escape and survive!

SINGLES CLUB: IN THE PRESENCE OF ROYALTY PAM SCHEID, HERONS GLEN

Eighteen members of the HG Singles Club journeyed to the Florida home of Colonel Hermann’s Royal Lipizzan Stallions, located south of Myakka City.

These magnificent white and freckled equines are a mix of the Arabians and Andalusians and were bred to be powerful war horses.

They are no longer the fearsome beasts ridden by knights into battle. Nevertheless, they are still admired today because of their beauty, their size and strength, their intelligence, and their extraordinary ability to master unique moves.

ROYAL LIPIZZAN STALLIONS IN TRAINING

The Lipizzan stallions were a proud part of the Austrian culture for generations. However, during WWII, they were in danger of becoming food for hungry German soldiers.

General Patton and the military action “Operation Cowboy” are credited with saving the breed. (Moviegoers might remember the scene in Patton where the general, mounted on a Lipizzan stallion, rides around the arena as he talks to reporters.)

Colonel Hermann brought these horses from Austria to the United States after WWII. He showed them across the country and increased the herd to 30 horses. Eventually, the Hermann ranch in Myakka became their home and training facility, where these clever stallions learn the moves they are so famous for. Today,  http://hggcc.com 45

the herd numbers 15, and it is Colonel Hermann’s granddaughter and great-granddaughter who train and perform with the horses. Visitors to the ranch can observe training exercises and demonstrations of the moves these horses are learning. One of these moves, characteristic of their Andalusian heritage, is the ability to walk sideways. Equally impressive is the sight of a large horse on its hind legs pawing the air, a formidable sight in battle, but beautiful to see in the arena.

HG Singles member Joyce Russell, who organized the trip, has visited the ranch many times. She explained that in its early days the family bred and trained 30 horses. Today there are 15 being prepared for their traditional performances and even for dressage. This training home for The Royal Lipizzan Stallions offers another special Southwest Florida experience.

The HG Singles celebrated their third anniversary on Wednesday, April 9 with a lively picnic. Fortyone members gathered at Ponce de Leon Park in Punta Gorda for barbecue, games, CAROL BRYAN and fellowship.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL BENEFITS THE ISLAND COAST HS JAZZ BAND DENISE FELL, HERONS GLEN SUE GREGOR AND SUSAN WASSEROTT, HERONS GLEN

In a shining example of community spirit, ice cream socials have been bringing neighbors together to support worthy causes since the 19th century. Honoring this tradition, the HOA Activities Committee hosted an Ice Cream Social on Sunday, April 6, in the Ballroom from 4 to 6 p.m. that will be etched in wonderful memories.

and volunteers. The Island Coast High School Jazz Band performed with gusto, and residents showed appreciation by donating generously, enabling the committee to present their music program with a large check to aid in the purchase of a saxophone. Additionally, many new friendships were established and existing ones reinforced during this

gathering. A special thanks to Rich Eilers, Mike Fell, Jeff Jensen, and Terry McElfresh for their crucial roles as our “Scoopers,” serving over 220 complimentary sundaes.

Their efforts were instrumental in making the event a resounding success.

SOCIALITES END THEIR SEASON IN STYLE PAM SCHEID, HERONS GLEN

Members and guests filled the Ballroom for the annual style show. They gathered around tables decorated by Mary Lou Pierozzi with colorful faux purses in their centers. Gracing the runway this year were Socialites Char Lowe, Candace Huetteman, Jean PerilloRoman, Donna Snead, Pat Cryster, Anne Trimble, Mary Lou Pierozzi, and Val Treichel.

Each model wore three outfits from Anthony’s in Punta Gorda. The representative from the store, who described the clothes and accessories, announced that Anthony’s, wellknown for women’s resort wear, has its many stores throughout Florida, celebrating its 130th year in business. The models looked beautiful, and it’s possible that eight closets were needed to make room for at least one more outfit.

At this last meeting of the season, some board members announced their retirement: President Janet Kerns, Vice President Karen Coburn, Secretary Bonnie Lucas, and Decorations Chair Mary Lou Pierozzi.

TWO SUMMER BALLROOM ACTIVITIES MIKE STROPES, HERONS GLEN

Now that the snowbirds have mostly retreated to the north and activity within Herons Glen slows considerably, the full-time residents that remain might be wondering how to fill some time.

ALERT: THERE ARE TWO FREE EXERCISE SESSIONS YEAR-ROUND EVERY MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, AND FRIDAY IN THE BALLROOM! Both sessions are conducted in the ballroom using DVDs played on the TV. These have been ongoing for years and resident participation is welcomed all year, every year. Going at your own pace is emphasized … the group is very non-judgmental as it’s not a competition, but an individual activity done in a group setting to maintain your health and mobility. Check out the Center for Disease Control’s article on the benefits of exercising: Physical Activity Benefits for Adults 65 or Older | Physical Activity Basics | CDC. This article can be summed up in this statement: “A single session of moderate to vigorous physical activity provides immediate benefits for your health. In addition, regular physical activity helps prevent many chronic diseases.”

The first session is Step Aerobics at 8 a.m., every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The DVDs vary each day and there is a limited number that is cycled through weekly. Steps are available as is basic instruction if needed. However, using steps is optional as each of the DVDs that are played can be done without using a step. Keeping moving

The second session is Fitness for All at 9 a.m., every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This session also features exercise DVDs with music. There are a variety of types of exercises that include aerobics, weights, stretching, walking, Pilates and some simple dance moves. Some of the exercises are done seated or using a chair but none require getting down on the floor.

TRAVEL CLUB HEADS TO NAPLES PLAYERS! DUANE PARKINSON, HERONS GLEN

On Sunday, April 6, 78 excited members of our Herons Glen Travel Club boarded two modern motorcoaches and headed south to Naples to see the matinee show Man of La Mancha at the Naples Players Theater. You might be familiar with the plot of the Broadway show, which was also a movie starring Peter O’Toole and Sophia Lauren. The show was inspired by a book titled Don Quixote written by Miguel de Cervantes in the 17th century.

It tells the story of Cervantes, who is imprisoned during the Spanish Inquisition for a play he wrote that was critical of the Inquisition Tribunal.

As Cervantes and his manservant wait to be called to trial, his possessions are taken by the other prisoners, including the manuscript of his play.

So, Cervantes puts on the play from his manuscript (a small play within the larger play), with the other prisoners acting as the jury to justify taking his manuscript. In this play within a play, Cervantes takes the role of the knight Don Quixote, who sets out with his manservant Sancho to right the wrongs of the world. Don Quixote thinks a nearby windmill is a giant and attacks it. He goes to an inn, where he meets a wench prostitute; he thinks he can save her and change her to the ideal woman named Dulcinea. In the small play within the play, the character Don Quixote drops dead, thinking that he has righted many wrongs. However, in the larger plot, Cervantes convinces the prisoner jury of his innocence, and his manuscript is returned to him. Then Cervantes and his sidekick Sancho are called to the real trial in front of the Inquisition Tribunal.

You might recognize songs from the show, such as The Impossible Dream and Dulcinea.

We thoroughly enjoyed the show and the venue, and will definitely return for another show in the upcoming season!

After the show, the 78 club members had dinner at one of the wonderful restaurants on Fifth Avenue in Naples. The restaurants there ranged from inexpensive (yes, you can find inexpensive dinners in Naples if you know

when and where to go – I got a very large pasta dish at the excellent Vergina Restaurant for $13 by ordering before 5 p.m.) to pricey. Dinner reservations were made on their own by small groups of friends at the restaurant of their choice.

After dinner, there was some time to venture out on Fifth Avenue to the shops and galleries or have a Kilwin’s worldfamous ice cream cone. Delicious!

We then boarded the motorcoaches, said goodbye to Naples, and headed back to the Glen, returning at 8:45 p.m. It was a

wonderful day seeing the show, having dinner, and exploring Naples. We will definitely plan this Naples show and dinner experience again!

Sports BOCCE MEN VS. WOMEN 2025 PATTI CUMMINGS, HERONS GLEN

On March 22, the kickoff to the Men vs.

Women Bocce Tournament was complete with cheerleaders – and they were a very enthusiastic trio of cheerleaders. This very cute trio is pictured at right. With three times and six courts used for each time, the day was filled with earnest groups of players and cheering spectators as well.

The outcome wasn’t what the ladies hoped for, but even though the day ended with men scoring 17 wins and women scoring 7 wins, the ladies have not lost hope.

We will be back with renewed optimism come 2026! Both Larry Cummings, men’s team captain and Shelly Christiansen, women’s team captain, are pictured at the official scoreboard. Better luck next year ladies and keep honing those bocce skills.

Sports MIXED BOWLING LEAGUE MIKE STROPES, HERONS GLEN

The results of the Herons Glen Mixed Bowling League’s 2024/25 season are listed in the following tables. However, there was a uniqueness to this year’s results, the same team won both the first half and second half of the season as well as the overall season championship plus winning the Team Handicap Series! A truly notable outcome. Pictured at right MARY ANN PECKHAM, BILL ESHBACH, EDIE OCHAB AND RUTH POSTER are the Bowl-Dacious Fun team members: Mary Ann Peckham, Bill Eshbach, Edie Ochab and Ruth Poster. Also amazing, the team’s average is only 110 which meant they were getting around 90 pins per game in handicap from their competitors. After 22 weeks of bowling, they succeeded in outscoring their competition sufficiently to win it all! This appears to be proof that the handicap system can produce winning results!

IMPRESSIVE SCORES! In other noteworthy bowling statistics, there were 112 scratch games bowled over a score of 200!

Furthermore, there were four scratch scores over 250!

The following table lists all the teams in finishing order for the spring season. The Herons Glen team finished the spring season in fourth place after finishing sixth in the fall season, improving by two places.

Additionally, congratulations to Herons Glen team member Jim Ingersoll (pictured at right), who was awarded the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for the Fall 2024 season at the awards ceremony on March 28. Jim played 35 matches over seven weeks and won 27 of those matches with only eight losses for 262 total points – an outstanding performance! The MVP award is given each fall and spring to the best player for each season.
