Lisa Schneck has penned a very important Wellness article titled A Remedy for Loneliness…Extend Your Life

by Making Friends, which begins on page 17. In it she sites social isolation as the most significant predictor of both dementia and premature death.

As a result, in May, HP’s Wellness Programs will be devoted to building connections here at Heritage Palms! *********** It’s a common belief that doing puzzles, word games, and other brainstimulating activities can stave off cognitive decline. That said, please know our own HP Library, located on the 2nd floor of the Activity Center, has a TON of jigsaw puzzles for you to enjoy (as well as many, many books!).

They range from 300 pieces up to 2000, with a wide variety of subjects.

*********** As they say, timing is everything. Luckily, the Heritage Palms 2025 Golf Championship was held the weekend of April 5 and 6, right before my BTP deadline. See both the Club Champions low gross winners and the Presidents Cup low net winners starting on page 10. This issue also contains the 2025 Tennis Doubles Champions (see Spring Doubles Challenge on page 14). It also includes a listing of the Ladies 9-Hole League 2025 champions (see LNHGA News on page 42). What missed the cut are the listing of the 18Hole WGA League 2025 champions. Have no fear, as these champions will be featured in the June BTP! *********** My husband, Bob, and I “run” HP’s Duplicate Bridge game every Wednesday evening. We had 640 players compete in the Friday and Saturday shot-gun rounds of HP’s Annual Meeting Scramble held March 28 and 29. Perfect weather prevailed both days and into Saturday evening until about 5:30, when the skies opened up. Despite the deluge, over 900 owners partied

under the high-top tents. Double Dare provided great dance music, and there were fireworks at dusk to celebrate our 27th Anniversary! Special thanks to our hard-working staff who kept everyone well supplied with drinks and vittles galore!

Spring Doubles Challenge CHAD DYER, DIRECTOR OF TENNIS & PICKLEBALL CDYER@HPGCC.COM

We held the Spring Doubles Challenge (Mixed and Men’s/Women’s Division) during the weekends of February 21-23 and March 1-2. There were 35 teams competing in all three divisions. Round Robin play in each division determined the two top teams who advanced to the finals. We had 50-75 people watching the finals each weekend. Winners and finalists were awarded engraved crystal trophies.

A Remedy for Loneliness…

EXTEND YOUR LIFE BY MAKING FRIENDS At the Activity Center, May will be the time to lay the groundwork for some vital social programming. As I write this column, we just held our “Eight Dimensions of Wellness: Social Health” lunch and learn. While most members know social support is essential to overall health, they may not appreciate just how important it is – social isolation is the

most significant predictor of both dementia and premature death. As a result, in May, our Wellness Programs will be devoted to building connections here at the Heritage Palms! Read on for more information on the significance of social connection and a list of our May Social Connection Initiatives!

The 2023 Surgeon General’s Advisory on the Healing Effects of Social Connection and Community tells us that social isolation is

more dangerous than smoking up to 15 cigarettes per day, drinking six alcoholic drinks per day, being physically inactive, and being obese.

The report tells us, “Data across 148 studies, with an average of 7.5 years follow up, suggests that social connection increases the odds of an individual’s survival by 50%.” Furthermore, the report tells us that “a synthesis of data across 16 different longitudinal studies shows poor social relationships (social isolation, poor social support, loneliness) were associated with a

29% increase in the risk of heart disease and a 32% increase in the risk of stroke.”

So, how can we ensure we live a long, highquality life? We can be both discriminating and intentional with our social connections.

Relationships should fit our needs for structure, function, and quality.

We aim for diverse, impactful, social connections that are supportive which yield satisfying outcomes. Similarly, we would limit relationships that are unhelpful and hurtful.

well-supported and thriving members are inclined to offer support to others. Providing support is rewarding to oneself and impactful to the other. It is a powerful way to add value to community life overall.

Fortunately, here at Heritage Palms, our community infrastructure is rich and encourages supportive relationships with like-minded folks; visit the Lifestyle tab on the website for a complete listing of our Club and member-led activities. When choosing among the many ways to connect here at HP, here are a few questions to consider:

This month, we will begin three initiatives aimed at increasing the social health of your community: • The Lifelong Learning Club – an intellectual initiative that will begin early next year. We will solidify the details over the summer. Member champions for this initiative will be key to its success. This will be a great opportunity if you are looking for intellectual stimulation. Please reach out to me to take part in shaping the club.

• What are you most passionate about? By choosing a group or initiative you are passionate about, you will have the added synergy of something you love and meeting others who share your passion.

• What do you need most? Some members have ample support and are looking for the opportunity to give to others, while others may be navigating difficult times and realize that they don’t have someone to share their thoughts and feelings with. Being unable to talk about our hardships can make them seem more powerful than they are, amplifying internal stress. While we don’t want to overshare or be indiscriminate, having someone we can confide in can go a long way toward feeling supported and connected. At the same time, www.hpgcc.com 19

• HP Walking Groups - a physical health initiative beginning on Monday, May 5.

Members will gather at the Activity Center on Mondays at 8 a.m. for a 3-mile walk and on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. for a 1-mile walk.

• The Wellness Community Group – an overall Wellness Support group where members will come together weekly, hear a short 10–15-minute presentation and participate in a helpful and positive discussion surrounding the day’s topic or any other wellness-related items that are pressing to them at the time.

You’ll learn more about these programs in my Wellness Update – an email blast sent out once a month on the second full week of that month. Together, we can build these initiatives over the summer and be ready to engage our full membership as they return in the fall.

Finally, please join us at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 22 for our “Eight Dimensions of Wellness: Environmental Health” lunch and learn. The event will be held in the Palms Dining Room and includes a healthy lunch buffet. It will be a lovely time, and I hope you will join us.

St. Patrick’s Day Celebration JANE BREISCH, EDITOR

Heritage Palms kicked off its St Patrick’s Day celebration with a parade of 20 or so cars and golf carts decorated in a myriad of green colors to commemorate the holiday. They traveled up Wine Palm and onto Washingtonia Palm before arriving at the Clubhouse. There they were greeted by 430 residents who gathered in the HP parking lot for our annual St. Patrick’s Day party. Delicious fare was offered, drinks flowed and many, many front-of-the-house and kitchen staff ensured

we were happy revelers. The Mirage Band provided wonderful music, and HP demonstrated their moves on the macadam dance “floor.”

It’s been a very active and fun season for the members of the HPPA, including a Welcome Back to Season Party, End of Season Party, Breakfast at the Courts, and three fun Round Robin Tournaments. But nothing beats the site of four new courts open for play.

The HPPA started with a few members in February, 2021, and is now 153 strong! There are also many HP residents who choose to just play pickleball. So, obviously these courts will get a lot of use! The courts opened last month.

The next task assigned to the HPPA, Chad Dyer and his staff, and the Tennis & Pickleball Committee, is how to use our six courts in the future. One new opportunity is joining a local pickleball league. It’s a very exciting time for our pickleball community.

The HPPA ended the season with a vote for new officers.

Our annual Health Fair was held the morning of March 4, and proved to be a great success. With over 150 people in attendance, the Activity Center was a buzz. The screenings were again the highlight and included balance, blood pressure, blood glucose, and postural alignment, to name a few. The 25+ exhibitors in attendance were spread throughout the Activity Center and shared educational information and dialogue with our members.

In keeping with our commitment to maintain our designation as a Lee Health Partner in Wellness, we work with Molly Grubbs, Lee Health Community and Business Relations Representative, to

provide opportunities to continue to educate and share important health information with our members at events such as our annual Health Fair as well as with our Wellness Speaker Series. Molly is a valuable resource to this community.

A big thank you to my fellow Health Fair committee members: Diane Hanson, Stasia Arcarese, Jacklyn Rechel, and Susan Smith, Lisa Schneck, our HP Wellness Director, and the many volunteers who helped to make this event a success.

Close to 100 HP men’s tennis players who play in the Lee County age 50 Plus and age 70 Plus respective tennis leagues and their guests, attended the Men’s Year End Tennis Party held April 1 in the Palms Dining Room.

HP had three teams in age 50 Plus league and three teams in the age 70 Plus league.

There are several divisions in each league.

The Community Relations Committee held its last event on Monday, April 28 in the Activity Center. Keith Robbins, District Safety Administrator FDOT District 1, presented the “Safe System Approach,” a proactive shared approach to safety.

Attendees learned about the six core principles to roadway safety which have been adopted by the U. S. Department of Transportation.

Also, on March 31, the CRC welcomed Carol Obermeier, Director of Air Service Development at the Lee County Port Authority. She shared many surprising details about the impact of RSW and Page Field operations on SW FL, as well as throughout the world. She graciously shared her PowerPoint slides and her presentation is posted on our website.

Post Cards From Ginny Tullis: The Chicks with Sticks golf group held our annual Can-Am golf tournament mid-March. The flags were flying, and everyone was dressed in their respective colors. It was neck and neck all the way, however, the Canadians managed to squeak out a win. Our group has been in existence for 18 years, and the friendships just keep on growing.

From Ginny Tullis: The Queens of the Green Tuesday afternoon golf group had a wonderful 2024-25 season at HP! For many of us, we have known each other for 30 years up north, so it’s wonderful to continue the friendships down south, as well. Cognitive and Emotional Self-Awareness ANDREW WEINER WEINER@UKY.EDU

In my last column, I indicated there were two significant components to emotional intelligence (EQ/EI); self-awareness and awareness of others. Today, I want to talk about the two types of self-awareness; cognitive self-awareness (what you are thinking in a given moment) and emotional self-awareness (what you are feeling in a given moment). Are they the same? Not necessarily.

Cognitive self-awareness focuses exclusively on thoughts which can emanate from self - talk. You experience an event almost as if you were taking a video of the event. You then assign it meaning, and formulate inferences and

conclusions from that assigned meaning.

Unfortunately for many of us, the meaning we assign the event may not be accurate, or may be biased based upon previous experiences. In a rush to come up with an opinion, we confuse an assumption (something we believe to be true but have no evidence) with an inference (a conclusion based on evidence). Bottom line - just because you believe something to be true does not make it true, no matter how strong your belief. That is why I advise others to take a moment and reflect internally (challenge your thinking), before formulating an opinion and climbing what is known as a “ladder of inference.” As you can see, the topic

is complex but, the thoughts you assign to an event or person, can contribute directly to your feelings about same.

Emotional self-awareness, focuses on what you are feeling in a given moment and why you may feel that way. Many of us try to deny our feelings, but, as the expression goes, “have your feelings or they will have you.” Having your feelings does not mean acting upon them; it means acknowledging them. How can we have our feelings and not be “hijacked” by them? Why are our feelings so strong? and how can we use cognitive selfawareness to manage them? These topics will be addressed in future columns.

HP Bingo Night Results 235 HP members came to test their luck on HP’s March 12 Bingo Night.

After enjoying a delicious buffet of salad, crab cakes, fried chicken, roast beef, veggies, and mashed potatoes, players had a wonderful strawberry shortcake for dessert. Then the games began! $3,470 was in the pot to be shared over ten games. There were 14 lucky winners, with Karen MacMillan winning the largest prize of $500, closely followed

by Maria Milazzo at $450.

The HP 18-hole WGA finished the year with 326 members. We hosted a sunny Member/ Guest event on April 2, and closed our season on April 30.

Our Charity Event, benefiting the Dubin Center, was held March 27. 195 golfers participated in the event. We raised a generous $40,431 for The Dubin Center, which is based in Fort Myers. They provide free education and support to caregivers of people living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The Dubin Center provides educational classes, support groups, one-on-one coaching, resource referrals, engaging day trips, and social events. Lynne Gerstner chaired this most successful event, with a committee of 17 hard-working women.

I conducted our Closing Cocktail Party and final membership meeting on April 7, celebrating another great year of golf and comradery. The Board of Directors thanked me with a gift. I celebrated our WGA extensive network of 53+ volunteers who generously gave their time this year, and expressed gratitude with flowers to the following outgoing Board members: Joan McIvor, Secretary; Susan Klimas, Treasurer; and Shirlee Firebaugh, Tournament Director.

The Closing Cocktail Party was also the venue we chose to elect officers for the 2025-26 season. by Jo Piazza. This historical fiction novel is rooted in the author’s own family history about a long-awaited trip to Sicily, a disputed inheritance, and a family secret that some will kill to protect. The book has two narrators, presentday Sara, and her great-grandmother Serefina, who lived in the early 1900’s. One reviewer wrote, “I enjoyed Piazza’s twisty narrative and complicated characters, especially her contemporary women, who are strong and feisty.”

Club meetings are open to all residents who read the book.

As the season came to a close, many of our golfers headed north for cooler temperatures. But before they left, they enjoyed a flurry of activities.

The March 12 luncheon with a St. Patrick’s Day theme saw plenty of green on our members and in the decorations. A 50/50 raffle made several people happy. The charity chosen for this year was the Ray V. Pottorf Elementary School. A check of $9,000 was presented to Brandy Macchia, School Principal at the luncheon. Vice Principal Katie Halbarson also attended.

The end of the year celebration of the League’s 21st Birthday was held on March 31. Upon entering the Palm Dining Room, members enjoyed a sparkling grape drink. A photo arch provided many opportunities for memorable photos. A photo book was available for browsing, and a slide show provided a summary of the year’s activities.

Chip-in winners were announced as well as LNHGA champions. Ending the event was a red velvet birthday cake decorated with flowers. Committee members were: Pat Vegh, Sue McNeilly, Paula Kraft, Peg Sheeran, Barbara Gregg, Melody Smothers, and Kay Riordan.

Hello from the golf shop. Summer is here and as always, the heat comes with it. We remind everyone at this time of year that you can’t drink enough water while playing golf. We want everyone to stay safe and if you’re not feeling well, quit.

Both courses will get two separate five to six weeks’ closures which will allow golf course maintenance to get much-needed work done, and give both courses the rest they need. Also, mark your calendars, both courses will be closed on August 24 and 25 for our yearly Curfew application for Nematodes.

Through April we have played over 51,000 rounds year-to-date. Thank you to Greg Kriesch and his staff for the outstanding playing conditions they have provided us with all year.

The Summer Reciprocal program has begun and runs through the end of October. You will notice that many of the clubs continue to raise their rates. As we see at HP, many clubs have more members staying year-round, and their members book the most desirable morning tee times. Please remember to give us multiple club options and a suitable time window as we try and book your requests. You can find a copy of the 2025 Reciprocal list on our Club

website. The golf shop accepts reciprocal requests two weeks out, and we can book the times two days in advance. Please make sure that you carry your membership cards with you when you travel, and remember that you do represent Heritage Palms when playing these courses.

Do You Know the Rules?

You are playing hole #7 on the Sabal Golf Course. You hit your drive into the bunker on the far-left side of the fairway. You have a choice for your next stroke. One, hit your next stroke to the right avoiding the penalty area or two, hit your next stroke at least 150 yards to carry over the penalty area.

You decide to hit your next stroke over the penalty area going directly at the green. Your shot does not carry over the penalty area, but you did not see a splash. You go to the other side of the penalty area and find your ball unplayable in the bank of the penalty area. You don’t want to go back toward the bunker where it crossed the red penalty area line. There is an area within one club-length of your original unplayable ball that you could drop your ball for one penalty stroke and would not have to go back toward the bunker to play your next stroke.

Do the Rules of golf allow you to take an unplayable ball relief from a penalty area?

NO! Rule 19.1 Player May Decide to Take Unplayable Ball Relief Anywhere Except Penalty Area Unplayable ball relief is allowed anywhere on the course, except in a penalty area.

If a ball is unplayable in a penalty area, the only relief option is to take penalty relief under Rule 17.

Rule 17.1d Relief for Ball in Penalty Area If a player’s ball is in a penalty area, including when it’s known or virtually certain to be in a penalty area even though not found, the player has these relief options, each for one penalty stroke: (1) Stroke-and-Distance Relief. The player may play the original ball or another ball from where the previous stroke was made.

(2) Back-on-the-line Relief. The Player may drop the original ball or another ball outside the penalty area, keeping the estimated point where the original ball last crossed the edge of the penalty area between the hole and the spot where the ball is dropped (with no limit as to how far back the ball may be dropped). The spot on the line where the ball first touches the ground when dropped creates a relief area that is one club-length in any direction from that point, but with these limits: Limits on Location of relief area: • Must not be nearer the hole than the estimated point where the original ball last crossed the edge of the penalty area, and • May be in any area of the course except the same penalty area, but • Must be in the same area of the course that the ball first touched when dropped.

Here is this month’s golf etiquette tip: Players should always alert grounds crew nearby or ahead when they are about to make a stroke that might endanger them.

Hot Tub/Spa Safety Reminder MICHAEL JOHNSON, SAFETY COMMITTEE MEMBER

Now that we have only one Hot Tub/Spa available to our HP members, let’s all remember the rules and regulations, so together we can keep it safe and open for all.

The Safety Committee would like all members to educate themselves, their families, and guests to the guidelines that have been established by the Club and by the state of FL. These rules are posted by the Hot Tub/Spa for everyone to see.

Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, FL statutes prohibit persons under the age of 12 from EVER using the Hot Tub, and anyone aged 12-16 MUST be accompanied by an adult.

The Spa has had to be closed, cleaned, and refilled multiple times due to “accidents.”

Most of these accidents are a result of our members, and/or their guests, using the equipment without regard to the posted guidelines.

When the rules and regulations are followed by everyone, the Hot Tub/Spa can remain open and we all can and enjoy this amenity.
