Greetings to all this Holiday season, I hope everyone is having a great start to this busy season. I would like to take this time to say a big THANK YOU to all the board members of the Master Association Board of Gulf Harbour. Also, THANK YOU to all the support from the residents of Gulf Harbour. Being on a board can be a thankless job, but I would like to say it’s nice to see what a difference one person can make.
At our October meeting, Lonnie presented a great outlook of what the island can be again, with some support from the residents and Master Association. Everyone enjoyed the beautiful island, for walking or just watching the sunset. The Master Board felt it was in the best interest of the residents to help with this project. All board members voted in favor of giving Gulf Harbour $60,000 to get the island off to a good start of recovery. We believe this is an important amenity of Gulf Harbour.
The Master Board is also working with security on a couple of items which have been discussed at our meetings. First is the problem with trespassers fishing in the lakes on the golf course. The young men have approached golfers with aggressive behaviors. As of now our first approach to help with this is to hire off duty police that can arrest them. The officer will be on site 3 hours a day. With rotating locations, secondly, we have installed new cameras and new lighting detection at both gates.
If you have any suggestions or comments, please feel free to reach out to any board members.

THE HOUSE ON BISCAYNE BAY
The Gulf Harbour Book Club met on December 2 to discuss with Chanel Cleeton on Zoom her latest book The House on Biscayne Bay . There were 34 of us in attendance.
Fran Cleaver was very clever and lively in her bio review of Chanel. Here is a synopsis. Chanel Cleeton is The New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Cuban Heiress, Our Last Days in Barcelona, The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba, The Last Train to Key West, When We Left Cuba , and Reese’s Book Club pick Next Year in Havana . She received a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Richmond, The American International University in London and a master’s degree in Global Politics from the London School of Economics & Political Science. Chanel also received her Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law. She loves to travel and has lived in the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia. Chanel is very well educated as her family encouraged her to obtain this education. However, she found she had a passion for writing which she pursued. She has been a prolific writer.
Chanel was most entertaining in discussing how she develops her ideas and does the research to ensure her historical fiction books are authentic. You could visibly see
her brain working as she answered our questions. She is a fascinating person.
In The House on Biscayne Bay her character development surpassed that of her other books. This was a romance, murder mystery, and historical fiction of the first people to populate Miami from the society pages of New York City. The book alternates between 1918 and 1941 with both female leads, Anna and Carmen, who were fish out of water. Her descriptions of the building settings transport you back in history. This was her first Gothic novel.
With the Great War finally behind them, thousands of civilians and business moguls alike flock to South Florida with their sights set on making a fortune. When wealthy industrialist Robert Barnes and his wife, Anna, build Marbrisa, a glamorous estate on Biscayne Bay, they become the toast of the newly burgeoning society. Anna and Robert appear to have it all, but in a town like Miami, appearances can be deceiving, and one scandal can change everything.
Years later following the tragic death of her parents in Havana, Carmen Acosta journeys to Marbrisa, the grand home of her estranged older sister, Carolina, and her husband, Asher Wyatt. On the surface, the gilded estate looks like paradise, but Carmen quickly learns that nothing at Marbrisa is as it seems. The house has a treacherous legacy, and Carmen’s own life is soon in jeopardy . . . unless she can unravel the secrets buried beneath the mansion’s facade and stop history from repeating itself. (Synopsis from Goodreads)
Unless you are one of those readers who reads the ending first, no one at Book Club guessed the ending.
Enjoy this book!
The Gulf Harbour Book Club meets on the first Monday of each month in the club’s boardroom. If you want to join the Book Club email joankaplan@mac.com. Zoom is available for members during the off season. We have six more authors lined up for the

Gulf Harbour Women Build
The Gulf Harbour Builders Team began in 2024, raising over $10,000 for Habitat for Humanity through Women Build. The mission of Women Build is to engage women in the effort to provide safe and decent homes for families in need of affordable housing. By recruiting, educating, and inspiring women, we can transform lives in our communities.
Since 2011, Women Build in Lee and Hendry Counties has built 27 affordable homes in partnership with female-led families. In 2024, 75% of families actively partnering with Habitat for Humanity to build a home were led by women, highlighting the critical need for affordable housing for women and their children.
Together we raised $534,000 last year to support the life-changing effects of homeownership for female-led households, providing them with stability and security for future generations. 2025 is the 15th year of the Women Build campaign, and we have set our goal at $600,000.

2024 Golf Cart Parade
TIM BALDWIN BALDWINFINANCIAL@COMCAST.NET
On Sunday, December 8th from 3 to 5:30 p.m., 45 golf carts initially gathered for judging by 3 Waterside employees. The winning carts are pictured in this article .
First place went to Candyland by Janie Collins, second went to North Pole by Rita and Jake Keltner, and third went to Snowmen by Mike and Kathy Needler.
Then we toured the various communities here in Gulf Harbour, stopping to sing some carols in a rowdy way! Our accordion accompanist for the last 6 years, Bruno Glavich, is moving away so we honored him for his smiling leadership at each stop. There were many opportunities for cookies, and an assortment
of beverages and we were all tuckered out by the end which culminated in Marblehead Manor which provided sandwiches and cakes in addition to the aforementioned fare.
This is a fun event each year! I hope you will consider joining in next season! Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, and a Happy/Healthy/ Prosperous New Year to all!
Ladies’ Luncheon
Our “Last Minute Shopping Event” was a huge success! Over 170 ladies gathered for a fun afternoon of friendship, shopping and holiday cheer! There were 14 vendors displaying their products ... everything from puppy sweaters to high-end jewelry. Thanks to Chef for a delicious buffet, Jennifer, Alidor and Jesse for their attention to detail, and of course, our great staff for their dedication to spot-on service.
Happy Holidays, see you in January.

JANUARY ON THE WATER
With 2024 behind us, let’s look ahead to a new year of fishing and with luck, no hurricanes. January is our coolest month, and our water temperature will be the lowest of the year. Lucky for us, Southwest Florida cool fronts only last a day or two, then it’s back to sunny mild days. There should be plenty of great opportunities on the water this month.
With cooler days and water temperature of winter, shrimp
is the top or preferred bait for most species. If you prefer throwing artificial baits, soft plastics in shrimp patterns is your best bet.
Sea trout are the most popular inshore game fish in Florida and hungry through the winter months. Fish for them in four- to eight-foot depths across grass flats, around the edges of sand holes and bar edges. On the cooler days they often relocate to deeper protected areas where the water is not as cold. These
could be residential canals and waterways, bays, and oyster bars.
Favorite trout baits include live shrimp freelined or suspended under a popping or rattling float. Scented DOA shrimp and a wide variety and color of soft plastic baits allow you to cast and retrieve to cover a lot of area, and they catch fish. If it’s cold, fish baits near bottom and slow down your retrieve.
Winter and cold weather are the best time for catching
sheepsheads. You will find sheepsheads hanging around some type of structure as they feast on barnacles, oysters, worms, small crabs, and other critters that live around these areas. Structure may include dock, pier, and bridge pilings, rock piles or jetties, oyster bars or any submerged structure that has life on it. Nearshore, in gulf waters, large sheepsheads are caught around the many artificial reefs well within sight of land and over ledges and hard coral bottom. Shrimp is the top bait for sheepsheads. They have small mouths full of big crusher teeth, so a large bait isn’t necessary. Fish baits on bottom with just enough weight to keep it there and use a small sharp hook or jig head. Sheepsheads often bite best on the coldest days.
If fishing nearshore in gulf waters expect to catch mangrove and lane snapper, tasty grunts, and possibly permit or grouper along with sheepsheads. Good bottom fishing in gulf waters is often between twenty-five and fifty feet, a short run offshore on a nice day.
Chances are good at hooking redfish and pompano over the month. Around inshore waters they are often caught while targeting sheepsheads or sea trout. Pompano are generally
on the move along bar drop-offs, shorelines, off oyster bars, and like sheepsheads they only eat mollusks and crustaceans, fish is not in their diet. Shrimp is a top bait for pompano along with a small colorful jig most anglers call a silly or pompano jig. When slow bounced across a sandy bottom it mimics a shrimp or small crab escaping.
current regulations with pictures to help identify fish.
I hope everyone has a great New Year and takes some time to spend on the water.
Redfish range over a wide area. They might show up on the flats and bar edges while trout fishing, around oyster bars, mangrove shorelines, and the same structure mentioned for sheepsheads. Redfish are scent feeders; their eyesight isn’t the best, so they rely on their nose. Shrimp is a great bait and often rigged with the tail pinched off on a jig head. This allows shrimp scent in the water. Another proven method is to find a likely area to hold reds such as a shoreline or structure and fish cut baits, like pinfish, sardines, mullet, ladyfish, or shrimp on bottom.

WE’VE SPOTTED FRAUDULENT ACTIVITY …
On a personal note, few things trouble me more than hardworking individuals … especially seniors … losing their life savings to fraudulent activity.
Individuals toil for decades, scrimping and saving, hoping to gather savings for their retirement.
Decades of savings can be lost in a matter of minutes.
While there are variations to this criminal act, it generally begins with a phone call, text or email from a company or lending institution that you are familiar with. In reality, this message emanated from a scammer.
“We have detected fraudulent activity on your account,” they indicate. “It is highly
recommended that you move your funds to a secure account.”
You will subsequently be “transferred” to an “account specialist,” “security specialist” or an individual with a similar title, who will help you to protect your hard-earned savings.
These “specialists” may claim to be government employees,
bank employees, etc. They are merely part of a criminal group preparing to steal your funds.
“We can move your money to a secure account.”
“Transfer your money into a cryptocurrency account in order to protect your savings.”
The recommendations vary. The only commonality is that they are all scams.
In prior “Fraud Alerts,” we have discussed some of the many techniques used by criminals to make it appear as if they are reaching out from a reputable agency or corporation. Technology continues to make it easier and
easier to fraudulently present oneself as a governmental employee, utility representative, bank employee, etc.
Many computer-savvy individuals have been fooled and have fallen victim to this type of fraud; don’t feel badly when you are uncertain about a call, email or text.
As always, never send money, provide personal identification information or agree to any type of transaction based upon a phone call, email or text.
Pause. Scammers try to create a sense of urgency. Don’t allow yourself to be stricken with concern.
Using telephone contact information that you know to be accurate (customer support numbers on the back of credit cards or contact numbers that you find on the bank or agency’s website), call the agency and verify the status of your account. Nearly every time, you will discover that the individuals that you were interacting with were criminals.
If you remain uncertain, please reach out to the Federal Trade Commission by calling (202) 326-2222.
Lastly, please report fraudulent activity to your local law enforcement agency.

ALVARO PUIG, CONSUMER EDUCATION SPECIALIST
HOW LONG WILL YOUR SMART DEVICE GET SOFTWARE UPDATES? IT’S HARD TO KNOW
Smart devices are everywhere. Devices track our health and fitness, control our lights and thermostats, and keep an eye on our homes and pets. We pay a premium for the smart features and functionality of these products. But what happens if the manufacturer stops updating the software that makes them “smart”?
Manufacturers of smart products often push out free software updates with new features or bug fixes that can be critical for the product’s smart features to work as intended. As a consumer, knowing how long the manufacturer will update the product software could mean the difference between a product that you want and one you don’t care to have. But an FTC report revealed that many manufacturers don’t make it easy to find that information.
So, before you buy a smart product, consider if it’s worth the price. Search the product website or look on the manufacturer’s website for information about how long the manufacturer will update the software. If you can’t find it, contact the manufacturer by phone, email, or chat.
Consider how the product will work if the manufacturer stops updating the software. For example, a smart light bulb might still work the old-fashioned way, by flipping the
switch, but you won’t be able to control it remotely. But if your smart speaker can’t connect to your music streaming service, it’s not very useful.
If the manufacturer does tell you when the software updates will end, find out whether the manufacturer offers a trade-in or recycling program for used electronics.
Finally, if you buy, or already have, an internetconnected device, learn how to protect it from hackers.
