13 people, who drowned in 2017, might be alive today had they been wearing a lifejacket or buoyancy aid.

These are the findings of this year’s Casualty Review Panel. The panel meets annually to discuss the previous year’s appropriate maritime fatalities and whether those who died might have survived had they been wearing a lifejacket. Wearing a lifejacket or buoyancy aid appropriate to your activity greatly improves your chances of surviving the shock of entering cold water. The panel also advise on other measures which might increase survivability. This year they looked at 27 fatalities and of these 13 might have been

saved had they been wearing a lifejacket.

People who have been drinking alcohol are more likely to be involved in a fatal accident.

In 2017 14 of the 27 fatalities had been drinking – accessing boats in harbour was a particular issue. Over recent years many harbours have introduced lifejacket lockers so people using tenders can store lifejackets securely while they are ashore, and the panel strongly recommended that boat users consider using them.

Carrying a means of raising the alarm and knowing how and when to use it is vital in an emergency, making a real difference in

survivability rates. In 2017, two people’s lives might have been saved had they been carrying a means of communication, to tell the Coastguard where to search. In particular the panel recommended *Carrying a vhf DSC radio and knowing how to use it to contact the Coastguard or other vessels *Carrying a PLB or EPIRB will help rescuers to locate you and even if you’re unconscious the alarm will be raised. *Downloading the RYA SafeTrx app on your phone and using it in an emergency could make all the difference.

Fishing has not been easy but its the time of year when many want to get out fishing with holidays and of course the fantastic weather we have been having and the anglers coming out with us are enthusiastic but many lacking in boat angling skills, but hey its our job to get fish for them.

Regular anglers are generally catching good mixed bags of rays hounds and a few bass and in the last week lots of small to medium rays have tuned up to keep us busy.

Hounds seem to have been down in numbers this year this may be due to many factors and number one I think is the lack of food primarily hermit crabs which suffered badly in the very harsh winter and the proof of this is our pots which we lay every year

to catch hermits for our anglers has been very difficult and a two to three day soak has been produsing hardly enough hermits for a days fishing i.e last year a three day soak would give you enough hermits to last all week.

This phenomenon has also seen hound numbers which were caught in certain areas in great numbers hardly worth travelling too and patchy in other marks.

The weather has also played its part in our up and down season with the tropical conditions and in our part of the world having relatively shallow waters has made fishing at times difficult and the wheel house unbearable and if this continues I may invest in air conditioning.

It’s good to see that the mackerel shoals have finally arrived in South Devon which has at least provided some sport for those venturing out although the arrival of the baitfish hasn’t resulted in an upturn in the number of specimen fish being caught and on the whole fishing remains a bit on the slow side.

It seems this year mixed in with the usual mackerel we are used to catching are large numbers of atlantic chub mackerel, not to be confused with Spanish mackerel which is something different altogether. There are clear differences between our usual atlantic mackerel and the chub mackerel once you get them side by side, with many of the chub mackerel caught recently around South Devon having been in excess of 1lb in weight. The best I have heard of caught by a Plymouth club angler so far is a fish of 1-8 caught by Jack ‘200%’ Hillon which was a new Castaways SAC club record. It seems that all of the usual spots in Plymouth Sound and the River Tamar are producing chub mackerel along with Slapton/Beesands and the deep-water rock marks around Torbay such as Berry Head and Brixham Breakwater.

The warm weather we have been experiencing this summer has also resulted in triggerfish showing-up within Plymouth Sound, with the hotspot areas being around Sutton Harbour and the deep-water marks on the Tamar such as Devils Point and Mutton Cove. An early morning start for Ricky McGuire was rewarded with the capture of 3 triggers up to a maximum weight of 3-4 which was a new PB and Castaways SAC club record. The fish was returned after weighing. To be successful with the triggers it is essential that you don’t cast too far as they love structure and most times will be down the wall under your feet.

fishing being rather quiet many anglers have been going out targeting thin lip mullet from the upper estuary marks using small mepps spinners baited with small king rag or maddies. Whilst many of the fish you are likely to catch are no more than 2lb, there is always the chance of finding some better fish. Al Hobbs of Roving Rods SAC had a nice surprise on a recent trip spinning for thin lips when he hooked a nice bass of 8-1 which put up a cracking fight on light line. As well as thin lips the estuary marks in South Devon and Cornwall continue to produce some nice gilthead bream. Unattached Plymouth angler Anthony Barton has had a cracking season on the bream catching a good number of specimens up to a maximum size of 5-10 which is a cracking gilt. Worm and crab are the top baits and you will do a lot worse than focus your efforts on marks in the Kingsbridge Estuary.

Turning to the boats, Malc Jones on Sea Angler 2 has now returned from smashing large cod and coalies up in Northern Norway and has been finding his customers plenty of blue sharks up to 155lb along with ling and congers on the wrecks. He has also found a new area which is producing some good-sized undulate rays (along with small eyeds) which is great to see and adds a bit of variety to the already excellent sport we get in the boats here off Plymouth.

Over on Size Matters, Kev McKie is having an excellent season on the sharks, with one recent trip producing 80 blue shark, with the best shark of the season so far going 130lb.

He has also had ballen wrasse to 7-4, john dory to 7lb, turbot to 12-4 and ling to 36lb. It seems that shark fever has certainly taken a hold in Plymouth – I need to get myself out there on a shark trip!

I think Its now safe to say the mackerel are definitely showing along the whole of the beach along with scad and the odd chub mackerel making an appearance.

nightmare. The fish seem to be there the only thing is trying to keep a bait in the water long enough before it becomes carpeted in the dreaded weed.

Chub mackerel are normally located in the warmer waters of Europe like the Mediterranean but can sometimes be caught along the south coast of the British isles. They are not really common enough for anglers to specifically target but can sometimes be caught while feathering for the more common Atlantic mackerel.

The bream are finally making an account for themselves now with good numbers showing from the deeper end all the way to the shallower end of the beach. Colin Searle had a nice surprise Axillary bream while fishing Chesil. Thats another species not native to our waters!

The best way to identify chub mackerel is with there spots running along the lower half of the flank which are not present on the Atlantic mackerel.

POOLE REPORT

The fishing around Poole has remained steady with some good action along the beaches with plenty of Plaice, Bream, Mackeral, Gurnards and the much-prized Trigger Fish being caught. David Gostling landed his 1st sea fish a cracking 3lb 4 Plaice. The Swash channel has thrown up some surprising big fish with Bream to 2lb, Bass to 9lb and on the ½ tides good Plaice. Local angler Mike Foyle did battle with a big fish which took his worm bait and proceeded to give him an epic 15 minute running battle on light gear which proved to be his downfall in the end when his 8lb trace parted. Inside the confines of the Harbour Gilthead Bream have given a few anglers some good sport along with some nice Plaice in the main channels, in the shallows around Evening Hill and

Southdeep Smoothhounds have been caught. On the banks plenty of small Tope have been hitting the baits and there has been some quality Ray action. Kim Burns was having a terrible day missing bites and not landing any fish whilst plenty were being caught around her but she did have the last laugh catching the biggest fish of the day a 15lb 5ozs Undulate Ray. Looking forward we should see the wrecks and offshore rough ground marks holding some big Bream up to 6lb and large Congers, just around the corner the winter species will soon start to appear.

SILVER SPRAY REPORT

With the wreck fishing on the drift all but finished for 2018 we have started to target plaice and rays further inshore. No monsters like we had earlier in the year yet but I’m sure September will bring with it a few bigger fish just like last year. With the right conditions it’s no problem to get 50-60 plaice mixed in with turbot, brill, gurnards and small pack tope, all good fun on the light tackle. Although the drift fishing is

nearly finished we will still be doing a few neap tide trips to anchor for ling and big black bream around the wrecks mid channel. Elsewhere the tope continue to be reliable; getting some fresh mackerel works wonders for them for obvious reasons. Over the next month we will be doing some more shark fishing and the last few trips over to Alderney to target the wide variety of species on offer at this time of year.

Spoilt for choice this summer with an abundance of species to target along the North Devon Coast. Tope fishing has been exceptional with the calm settled conditions that dominated throughout July ensuring that boats could get offshore to target these hard fighting sharks with numerous boated of over forty pounds.

thin-lipped mullet taking baited spinners in the Taw and Torridge estuary. Thick-lipped mullet are being caught from both coast and estuary with the next few months likely to yield fish to over 5lb. large mullet are often glimpsed but seldom take even the best-presented baits.

Ilfracombe based Charter boat Reel Deal skippered by Dan Hawkins did a few long distance trips to the Celtic Deeps where several blue shark were tempted.

Triggerfish and gilthead bream have also featured in catches and many will speculate that this is a consequence of this long hot summer. Both of these species should be around for the next couple of months.

Mackerel numbers have started to improve with fish tempted from both shore and boat.

The clear water has also ensured that lure anglers have enjoyed some good sport from both boat and shore. Boat anglers fishing over reefs have taken several goodsized Pollock to double figures. Numerous bass have been tempted with surface lures that have worked well in settled conditions.

A few pioneering anglers have also enjoyed catching bass after dark on lures. Grey mullet are present in good numbers with

Shore fishing for tope will undoubtedly see dedicated anglers setting their stall for these powerful fish. At the other end of the scale species anglers will be targeting fish on LRF tackle with Ilfracombe Pier a favourite venue. If you want to catch a double figure bass then late summer and early autumn is the best time with big fish baits anchored off a storm beach likely to reward the patient angler.

I had the pleasure of guiding Steven Hone for an evening for a session on our infamous Somerset reefs. Steven is a keen and very competent angler and loves this area of the channel and it’s fascinating reef system. Living in Tavistock it’s a 180 Miles round trip for Steven. With a road trip like this anyone would want to make sure it’s not a wasted trip and so they could get the best out of their time and consequently set them up for possible productive and more importantly safe return trips. So it was a worthy guided trip. Conditions and tide where spot on with an evening low tide with a stunning sunset. From the first cast bites were quick to come by with small congers

and dogs being a bit of a pain. The mark in question is only accessible 2 hours each side of low water and it’s one of those marks that any unsuspecting angler will get cut off by a back filing gully if leaving it too late to leave. This danger was explained for Stevens peace of mind for the future. As the session came to the close and Steven packed one rod away to aid a quick exit, his 2nd rod pulled down and line slackened with 5 minutes to spare Steven steered a fine hound and target species to the shore.

After a quick weigh, photo and release it was time to go before we got marooned on a rocky weed island.

LANGSTONE HARBOUR AREA BOAT FISHING REPORT

By Neville Merritt, Southsea Marina Angling Club The calm sunny weather continued, causing widespread confusion. We have never experienced so many fishable days all in a row – what’s going on? This has all changed in the last week, but it was really good while it lasted. The calm seas in the background of many of the photos demonstrates how pleasant it was, right out into the Channel too.

Last month we were a little concerned about the apparent lack of mackerel despite huge concentrations of recently hatched fry. Well, word must have got out because the mackerel have turned up in good numbers, and in good sizes too.

Early in the day, we can stock up on big fat barrel-shaped mackerel, full to the gills with fry. Later in the day, digesting their huge breakfasts, the mackerel have been a lot harder to catch.

There has been an interesting demonstration of the food chain in action in the eastern Solent. The proliferation of fry attracted mackerel, which in turn has attracted the dolphins. In previous years we have had the occasional treat of the sight of a pod passing. This year, the dolphins have been much more numerous and a number of boats have had the amazing experience of dolphins following the boat, playing alongside and riding the bow wave.

The photo here was taken by David Cheal from his boat off the Isle of Wight. Dolphins have even been travelling into Chichester harbour.

Back to the fishing – the larger tope have now moved off leaving smaller pack tope which can be a bit of a nuisance at times. The larger smoothhound are still around, as Bill Arnold demonstrates with his impressive specimen caught inshore.

Offshore wrecks and reefs are producing good summer pollack. Rough ground holds bull huss, and although they are usually nocturnal they can be caught during the

daytime in deeper water, as shown here.

Another benefit of the calm water has been the ability to spot our regular summer visitor, the sunfish. When basking (which they do on their sides, strangely) their pectoral fins stick out of the water making them easy to see at a distance. They can be scooped up in a landing net for inspection, but Kev Johnson caught one legitimately with feathers, estimated at 18-20lb. With water temperatures now 20C (a full two degrees warmer than this time in previous years) we have had reports of more unusual fish sightings. Luke Scott even videoed a large, unidentifiable fish behaving very strangely just below the surface. Unfortunately this became a non-catch report because it could not be tempted. He did catch a beautifully marked starry smoothhound later though.

Mullet are a summer feature in our marinas and harbours, and can grow to a size that gives a good bend to a light rod. We once thought these fish were uncatchable and they are a challenge, but with a very delicate approach and lightening reflexes they can be landed. They also feed at night so a few hours in the evening can give great sport. Christopher Sart shows off his pier mullet, Bill Arnold has an impressive 4lb 7oz fish, and Heber Crawford tempted both thin- and thick-lipped mullet.

The juniors were also busy this month. Jake Kelly shows off his undulate ray of 13lb 8oz, and at the other end of the size spectrum Heber Jr. and Archie Crawford have been having great fun on LRF gear catching shanny. Dad Heber Crawford caught this monster (?) shanny – all things are relative.

RECENT CATCHES ABOARD SEAFIRE II

At last the spell of fantastic, almost tropical weather is beginning to show a break.

Blustery conditions making some days difficult but hey, we can't complain though no doubt, some will. Fishing remaining good with a few mackerel to the west though numbers are drastically down on what we used to see. Tope fishing has again been steady though big tides and murky water will send them scurrying for the western approaches. Closer to home the rays have again delighted many charter parties. Small eyeds and blondes reaching specimen size on many trips. On one trip we had a rare visitor in the form of a lesser weaver. These poisonous little beggars are plentiful down channel on the offshore sandbanks but we

rarely see them up towards the east. Trying to be helpful, I pointed out to Steve Chillcott the captor that it would be dangerous to get too close to this fish as the sting from their dorsal fin can be very painful. Of course, the inevitable happened to the absolute delight of everyone watching. As I reached to carefully remove the weaver, it flicked its tail and stung me on the finger!! To make matters worse, Steve's first fish on the day after was yet another weaver! Needless to say, he had to remove this one himself, lesson learnt, I hope! AlyKat's fish of the month has to be a lunker of a bream for Andy Bickle. Weighing in at 4 lb 4 oz it was just two ounces short of yet another Bristol Chanel record for AlyKat.

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT

In true August fashion the fishing along much of the Bristol Channel has been tricky for many anglers.

To say the fishing has been poor over the past month is a big misconception of what is primarily going on. The general fishing has been slow in parts but it’s been far from poor.

When August arrives it’s wise to change and adapt the approach with tactic to target the species that are there to catch. Thinking outside he box and doing something different to get results plays a massive part.

The main species that have produced some fantastic catches recently are the bass , rays and sole. These fish are fairly easy to catch if you move away from the 2 up 2 down big baited rig approach.

The area around Weston has seen some good Thornback action with lots of small congers and a good few bass. The Burnham area around the light house overvlow water up has produced some fantastic fishing with rays , bass and sole if you don’t mind a good old bit of mud. Sometimes you have to get a bit covered in mud to get results.

Well worth a bit of fun in the mud especially if your fishing buddy ends up on his arse in it.

The reefs have been a little disappointing this summer . A splattering of hounds , lots of small eels and a good few rays have shown up here recently. The bass have

been the star fish from the reefs when anglers have actually stopped to think about targeting them. A few doubles have been recorded from this area.

The st Audries beach has fished ok with rays, congers, bass and the odd hound still showing. Blue Anchor through to Minehead golf links has fished extremely well with good numbers of bass, small eyed rays a few sole and just as I’m getting this report finished off the codling are starting to show in catches again after the moved off in mid June. The plump little codling are around 1,8lb now and if early siting was anything to go by we could have a half tidy autumn run going on by this time next month. This will keep the masses happy and the tackle & bait shops ticking over with lug sales.

As we move into September we hopefully expect the small eyed ray fishing to increase at Minehead and some good mixed bags of fish from Minehead’s town beach. This beach has been fishing very well recently after dark with rays, bass, sole, eels and the odd codling and don’t be surprised if a Smoothound picks up a worm bait intended for bass & sole.

That’s it this month. Let’s hope things get back to being a bit more consistent for everyone. Don’t forget, target what’s there.

Much the same as last month, plenty of sunshine and plenty of fish. Inshore the Bream fishing is still going strong with the occasional fish around the 3 lb mark.

There are also some big Bream starting to show in the channel on the deep water wrecks. Undulate,Small eyed, Thornback and spotted rays seem to be quite plentiful in the Christchurch bay area. Mackerel and Scad are in abundance, along with some

pretty big shoals of Bass. It was good to see some of my regular anglers quite prepared to do a catch and release Bass trip, they had some cracking sport.

A smattering of Plaice are starting to show on the inshore marks, these fish should be much fatter than the early season run.

For those who don't mind fishing into the hours of darkness, there are some good Sole to be caught, a sure sign of Autumn.

This is the month we start to target the Dover sole and Plaice along the inshore marks, this is done through the hours of darkness and can be very exciting and a new experience for some of our anglers, plus they are very good for the dinner table. We have also experienced a good run of Mackerel through the West Wight

area along with big shoals of Bass, mostly smaller fish of around four to six pounds which are returned to the water. The amount of self control shown by the anglers has been total (return every fish) and I hope this no take rule for the Sport angler will show some Common Sense and fair play for next year.

Port Report When I had the pleasure of reporting the results of successful anglers in the various Dorset SAC’s competitions, I was always mindful of how easy it was to disguise their achievements under a list of weights and statistics. It’s not easy to do well in a competition especially against stiff opposition.

Results do not show all the hard work, preparation, dedication and effort people put into their sport and, in the case of angling, participants often need to cope with difficult weather conditions as well.

The European Federation’s two day conger competition was held in Weymouth in late July and was a great success with our visiting anglers enjoying some of the very pleasant weather we’ve experienced this summer rather than being thrown all over the place at sea as often seems to happen during anchoring based events.

The Weymouth skippers are renowned for their keen competitive spirit although that never stops them from helping each other during the day. Over these two days, 21st and 22nd July, the points tally swung from boat to boat with Adrian Brown’s ‘Al’s Spirit’ emerging as Top Boat with an average of 63.12 points per angler.

Winner of the event, The Euro Species/ Line Championship 2018, was Cliff Newbolt with a superb 140 points tally which also included the best eel of the two days at 64lb ahead of Peter Neale’s 51lb and Ash Currier’s third placed conger 49.5lb narrowly beating Weymouth Angling Centre’s Andy Selby by 8oz. These eels were beaten using 30lb braid for this line class event.

Cliff was 10 points ahead of 2nd placed Michael Clarges on 55 points beating Michael Elliot, also on 55 points, with 9 eels compared to Michael’s 7 eels.

Tomorrow, Monday 20th August, the three day Weymouth Conger Festival begins with boats leaving port at 0700. Again, after so many years of being battered, the three event days are forecast to be fished in improving and then pleasant conditions especially on the 21st and 22nd. The results of this are always worth recording and I look forward to next month’s Port Report when I can do just that!

Needless to say, all the eels are measured and weighed at sea and returned alive.

The inshore fishing in Weymouth has focussed mainly on the bream with many fish coming from a variety of reef marks along with some super specimens to 4lb plus. The wrecks have also produced some excellent bream sessions with good specimen sizes recorded. The wreck bream have come during anchoring sessions for conger and ling with anglers switching to the lighter tackle as soon as the tell-tale bites of bream are felt on the baits intended for the bigger fish.

Although not always easy to find, this year’s mackerel fishing has been easy than recent years and this has allowed for some lively tope, rays and conger fishing from the reefs and also given the boats travelling to Alderney the chance to sample some of the superb tope fishing across the Channel thanks to being able to take a good stash of fresh mackerel bait across.

It’s not just the big fish that the competitions

concentrate on. This year Weymouth held its first brill and turbot specimen based event with 1st and 3rd places going to anglers fishing aboard Lyle Stantiford’s Supa Nova. Josh Atkinson won the event with a 5lb 1oz brill with second place going to John Sherman’s 4lb 13oz brill whilst fishing from Keith Brown’s Amarissa.

The year races away and we are fast approaching what are generally regarded as the best two months for Weymouth’s inshore fishing. September plays host to the Police Nationals and the Weymouth Angling Society Festivals with the WIBAC (Weymouth International Boat Angling Competition) taking place in October.

Expect everything and anything. Turbot and brill on the Shambles Bank whilst on the drift along with undulates, blondes and spotted rays when at anchor plus whatever else might take the baits. Readers may recall the surprising amount of small porbeagle sharks taken on mackerel baits fished at anchor for rays last September.

The bream fishing will be at its best with these rocky marks producing strap conger, gurnard, pouts, huss and a bonus fish such as a Pollock or stray cod.

The Kidney Banks to the west of Portland always fish well in September and October for blonde rays with a very good chance of brill and turbot during the anchoring sessions for the rays.

There’s even a few plaice about but these are scattered and should be treated as a bonus.

The plaice are usually taken on the drift with gurnard and pout featuring from the current plaice areas. 9And don’t decry pout…have you seen the current fish mongers prices with pout fillets at £6.50 per kilo?!

Offshore wrecking gives way to the variety of the inshore marks over these next two months although congering will be taking place and pollack sessions will be the mainstay of the wreck drifting.

September through until November was always the prime time for bass fishing and this will be sadly missed. I’m sure all those responsible for making it illegal for Recreational Anglers to retain even one bass.

These draconian restrictions have savagely damaged many of the charter businesses around the south coast of the UK and will have a marked effect on the Channel Island trips which featured bass fishing for these last two important months.

As ever, thank you to all of you for coming to Weymouth and supporting the charter boats and we especially wish to thank our European anglers for making the journey to the UK for the various competitions. Apply for a free Fishing for Schools course at your school

COMPETITION BEST LURE CAUGHT FISH PRIZE

Schools across England and Wales need to mark 1 October in their diaries, as that’s the day they can start to apply for free Fishing for Schools courses in 2019.

Fishing for Schools is an initiative run by The Countryside Alliance Foundation (TCAF), the charitable arm of the Countryside Alliance. It provides free, short angling courses at schools across the country, to aid the education of 12 to 16-year-olds who may not respond to traditional classroom-based learning but flourish when you get them outside onto the water. It celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2017.

Due to phenomenal interest in our courses, Fishing for Schools (F4S) is now operating an application process where schools use an online form to apply for our free sessions annually.

Who can apply?

Applications are invited from educational providers in the following geographical areas: Avon, Bath and North East Somerset, Cambridgeshire, Derbyshire, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Kent, Norfolk, Somerset, Wales, Wiltshire and Yorkshire.

We welcome applications both from new schools and those that have previously participated in F4S. All schools and educational establishments are welcome to apply.

Our courses are suitable for children aged 10-16 years of all educational abilities.

F4S director and founder Charles Jardine said: “There has been a huge growth in demand for our free Fishing for Schools courses, which is brilliant. We believe the new application process is a fair and consistent way of deciding how our resources are used.”

Schools can still benefit from Fishing for Schools if their application is unsuccessful. F4S can provide paid-for courses where a school would be charged for sessions.

How to apply Schools should apply using our online form, which will be available on our website from 1 October 2018 until 9 November 2018. Successful applicants will be notified in early December 2018.

Shirley SAC Here are the results of our last 2 comps which were a Deep Boats trip on Sun 22nd July out from Hayling aboard ' Valkyrie' and a Shore Solent Rover on Sat 28th July.

DEEP BOATS. 10 members fished with 9 catching & releasing 13 Pout, 7 Bream, 2 Pollack, 1 Bull Huss & 5 Conger Eel with the best fish being a nice Conger eel of 20k 412gms caught by Richard Knight.

RESULT. 1. Richard Knight 3 fish 53pts 2. Darren Taylor 6 fish 35pts 3. Steven Blewitt 5 fish 30pts 4. Steve Southwell 4 fish 22pts 5. Phil Folkes 3 fish 16pts Kim Tang 2 fish 16pts SHORE. With all the Glorious weather around 12 members were greeted with strong wind & squally showers so most headed fro Magazine Lane. 6 members weighed in 14 fish for 8k 000gms. Species were Pout, eel, Bass & Undulate ray withe best fish being a nice Undulate ray of 5k 613gms caught by Robert Cooke. Not a bad fish for Magazine Lane wall.

The low water channel at Talacre offers some of the deepest water available to shore anglers in North Wales but with hordes of lesser weevers grabbing baits within minutes of being cast out, fishing was difficult with flatfish, in particular, very scarce.

Adrian Moody with a 6lb 3oz bass which was measured and weighed and then released.

Junior Summer League Competition 27th July.

On Friday evening 27th July Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a Junior Summer League competition on Lymington Sea Wall.

The weather for the evening was sunny, dry and warm with a light breeze. Fish caught were gilthead bream and bass. Only edible fish are retained. All other fish are measured and gently released at the bottom of the sea wall.

Seven club members signed on and all had fish measured.

In the Assisted League.

Four club members fished and all had fish measured.

1st Ollie Savin 9 fish 170cm, 2nd ___ ___________ 9 fish for 168cm, 3rd Max Munden 6 fish for 118cm, 4th Finley Munden 2 fish for 45cm.

In the Solo League.

Three club members fished and all had fish measured.

1st Riley Price 32 fish for 677cm, 2nd Owen Strange 17 fish for 337cm, 3rd Curtis Driver 8 fish 115cm.

In Zone A, Bill Lindfield landed a 95 cms smoothhound on his first cast and smaller specimens were also caught by Jim Morris and Kevin Martland but towards the mid point if the match, Wallasey’s Mike Parker beached a bigger hound at 98 cms for 512 points from Zone B. Despite Bill managing a school bass, Mike won the match, pocketing the Golden Peg jackpot in the process.

The only three dabs caught came from Zone A with mike Wood’s 23 cms fish taking the flatfish pool. John Waugh’s single bass proved crucial: he has increased his championship lead.

LDSFC Shallow Boat Competition 5th August 2018.

On Sunday 5th August Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a Shallow Boat competition. The weather could not have been better, sunshine right from the start with a light wind all day, which made all the anglers very happy and provided a good day’s fishing.

Six club members signed on and all six weighed in fish consisting of dogfish, mackerel, scad, smooth hound, undulate, thornback, and blonde rays, pouting, black bream, wrasse and bass.

A total of 43 fish were weighed and measured for a total weight of 94lbs 3.7oz. Only edible fish are retained. All other fish are released straight away at sea.

Best specimen on the day was a black bream of 1lb 10.4oz (46-42% of specimen fish) and was also the heaviest fish brought back to the scales, caught by Phil Morgan.

Results: 1st Robert Miness with 7 fish for 27lbs 7.2oz, 2nd Barrylittle Fair with 9 fish for 24lbs 8.4oz, 3rd Denis Mapes with 9 fish for 14lbs 15.6oz, 4th Phil Morgan with 8 fish for 14lbs 7oz, 5th Adrian Moody with 6 fish for 9lb 6.5oz, 6th Alan Martin with 4 fish for 3lb 7oz.

Wild Weather and Wide Smiles The infamous British weather tried its very best to confuse the public last weekend for the launch of National Fishing Month (NFM). Despite blistering heat, high velocity winds and even lashings of rain, NFM events kicked off in style, bringing instant joy and lasting memories to the many people who took part.

At a showcase NFM event at The Game Fair at Ragley Hall, near Evesham, coaching teams from The Professional Anglers Association and the Game Angling Instructors Association battled the wild weather conditions to give free coaching sessions to hundreds of youngsters and adults alike, often with whole families having a go, to cast a fly line or catch a fish on the lake. Some fabulous fish were caught, and there were wide smiles on the faces of the happy participants.

In addition to offering coaching sessions, Nick Watkins (PAA) and Rob Doyle (GAIA) spoke about getting new people into fishing at the Fishing Theatre in the centre of Fishing Village. Nick commented: ‘The audiences were great and were certainly interested and engaging.’ Rob added: ‘The Game Fair organisers deserve hearty congratulations for recognising the importance of recruiting new anglers and for providing such a fabulous public platform to showcase how we carry out our coaching.’

Everyone who took part in a coaching session went home with a NFM ‘goody bag’ containing the ‘Get Into Fishing’ booklet full of information on how to get started and advice on different types of fishing, a log book to make a note of their first catches and a special certificate as a memento of their days free fishing.

There are still hundreds of free events available to attend nationwide, listed online at www.nationalfishingmonth.com so there’ll be a participating venue close to everyone. Taking part is simplicity itself – just need to register online and then turn up. Everything will be provided without charge, and most people will experience the ultimate thrill of catching their first fish under the watchful guidance of their coach.

National Fishing Month 2018 runs between 27th July and 2nd September.
