COVID-19 ROADMAP OUT OF LOCKDOWN: WHAT IT MEANS FOR ANGLING The Angling Trust has responded to today’s government announcement on the easing of lockdown restrictions in England saying: "Although it’s positive that the government have accepted the case that outdoor activities such as angling should be first to fully open up it looks like no real change for us until March 29th when restrictions are lifted and outdoor sports can resume.

"The Stay Home message and travel restrictions remain in place until then with the exception of a provision for outdoor recreation as well as exercise. Since angling has been deemed ‘permissible exercise’ throughout lockdown this is unlikely to affect us. We will know more when the regulations and DCMS guidance

are published in the coming days and will update everybody if anything changes.

"Having a clear date at least means that anglers, clubs and fisheries can plan for the forthcoming season with more certainty and we can all look forward to once again being able to fish our favourite waters in a manner of our choosing," Currently anglers are restricted to fishing locally once a day, as a form of exercise, with one other person and no organised gatherings or competitions. Most other sports remain prohibited. The Angling Trust submitted a case to government for the early and full resumption of all forms of angling including night fishing and competitions. These will now be possible from March 29th.

BACK TO BASICS By Martin Wood

Plaice fishing: With Spring approaching and warmer weather on route that means that a good table fish will be making way back in range of the shore angler before long.

Plaice is a fantastic and my favourite table fish, with its winter spawning out deeper to sea now over they are making their way back towards the warmer wa‐ ters closer in.

So let’s look at a few way that will get you on your way to catching a plaice.

The Plaice is great table fish and lots of people fish for them, they are a right eyed flat fish with a light brown upper and or‐ ange spots on them, they have very small scales which produces a very smooth texture to the touch.

Plaice can weigh up to the 5lbs but more commonly they are around the 2lb mark on average.

Plaice will feed around the clock no mat‐ ter the weather so you stand a good chance at catching them.

Rigs: Plaice rig: 60lb main rig body, 20-30lb line for hook lengths with green & black

Peeler & squid: cut half a small peeler in half and whip it to your hook and then get a strip of squid and hook a couple of times and leave nice movement hanging off the end.

Grounds: Plaice prefer sandy sea beds or gritty beds, sandy beaches with a with rocky outcrops tend to hold more food and will have shoals of Plaice. It’s best to use shorter hook lengths as a lot of flatfish like their baits hard on the bottom and predictable in movement not flapping everywhere.

by Philip Higgins Not a great deal has been happening due to restric�ons and the relentless wind but as the end of Feb is here the sun is shining and the winds have dropped out to allow some days afloat with 1 other, I and many others from Poole have taken full advantage and the results have been good for the �me of year with plenty of Plaice which are

in surprisingly good condi�on and are of a decent size. Some boats have ventured further afield to the Turbot marks and have caught a few small fish but for most it has been more about ge�ng back into fishing than catching, now with a �metable issued to resume a new style norm we can plan the future and enjoy the good �mes ahead.

NORTH DEVON REPORT

By Wayne Thomas The local only lockdown has inevitably impacted upon angling activity along the coast but despite this some superb fish have been landed. Kyle Bishop landed the best specimen reported this winter a superb spurdog that pulled the scales down to 18lb 1oz a new Combe Martin SAC record. Several other spurdog have been tempted from renowned marks along with some good huss and even an early smoothound. A few specimen conger have been landed and several lost in large winter seas.

As the winter weather passes by I expect Spring to come early with a few bass showing from the estuary and shallow water rock marks where lure anglers can often succeed if water clarity is favourable.

Grey mullet can be located from some marks and large specimens are sometimes amongst the early arrivals.

Some mullet remain along the coast all year round a possible sign of our changing climate?

A trip to local beaches after dark could well produce a small eyed or blonde ray.

Rock marks should continue to produce huss, conger and rockling with the chance of spurdog.

LRF tactics can bring exciting sport and variety with smaller species adding something different to the angling experience. Ilfracombe Pier and many harbours are ideal venues to try this intriguing branch of sea angling.

Boat anglers will be looking forward to the gradual lifting of COVID restrictions when charter boat angling should be able to restart out Ilfracombe. Spurdog, huss and conger will the predominant species with the possibility of trips further West in search of early porbeagle.

EAST SUSSEX DIARY

By Kevin Morgan ANDERIDA The last club match that was able to be held prior to lockdown was fished on Tuesday 15th December, with 17 anglers fishing in Pevensey Bay. The winner on the night was Jim Whippy with 3lb 31/4 oz.

Second was Les Glazzard with 2lb 7oz and third James Blackmar with 2lb 5 ½ oz.

The biggest fish was a dogfish of 1lb 2 ½ oz for Colin Everest.

Due to the current restrictions no more competitions have been currently held and so the final championship results for 2020 finished with the 2020 champion Colin Isaacs with 303 points. 2nd Les Glazzard 284 pts. 3rd Jim Whippy 266 pts. 4th Damion Chant 212 pts. 5th James Black‐ mar 188 pts. The top Junior was Ollie Franks with 102 points.

GENERAL With the lockdown set to continue, fishing has slowed down in the region, especially with the poor weather which hasn't helped .When anglers have managed to brave the conditions some nice fish have been caught. Unfortunately still seeing plenty of small whiting ! but there are some nice fish caught when conditions are good. Les Glazzard and Gary Banfield have caught some nice dabs and plaice along East‐ bourne seafront, as has Peter Cornwall re‐ cently. Some nice thornbacks are beginning to show Lorcan caught a thorn‐ back during the day at Langney Point on

lug/squid and Chris Kirrage caught a nice 6lb 3oz fish on bluey at the end of January.

Not to be outdone his dad Tony Kirrage caught one of similar size on February 2nd also on bluey in Eastbourne.

The ray and plaice fishing is really starting to pick up from the shore at the moment with some lovely catches being reported.

Scott Brown and his son Oliver caught some really nice plaice at Langney Point recently, with Oliver managing the biggest at 50cm and Scott catching 12 to 49cm!!Kim Mcgreevy caught some good plaice to 43cm and Gary Banfield also caught plaice to 43cm. Luke Ripley has managed a couple of sessions catching Thornbacks from Eastbourne with his biggest so far at 8lb 2oz. Peter Cornwall has caught Rays to 7lb as has Les Glaz‐ zard who managed 5 in a session to 7lb 1oz. Kevin Morgan also has caught a few Thornbacks with his largest at 8lb. Some lovely pics of youngsters with plaice at Langney Point not just Oliver Browncatch‐ ing a bigger one than his dad but young Darcy Gifford pictured with 2 plaice while fishing with dad Mathew !

During the calm conditions the plaice fish‐ ing during the day should remain good and other venues such as Seaford will pro‐ duce some quality fish!! The ray fishing has also picked up and again should con‐ tinue to fish well during March.

RNRMAA VETERANS SEA ANGLING CLUB Fishing hit the Covid buffers for the newly formed Royal Navy and Royal Marines Veterans Sea Angling Club at the start of 2020. However, that didn’t halt the efforts of Club Administrator Trevor Sutch from Fareham, Hampshire, who recruited 36 comrades during the year, some 25 years after leaving the service himself.

Huge advances in social media helped the Club locate sailors through Facebook and WhatsApp, many now retired again after second careers, interested in returning to sea angling as a form of exercise and recreation which they so enjoyed during there senior service days.

With get together meetings banned under Tier and Lock-down 1 and 2, a Most Species Competition was introduced from August until December which allowed members to fish and register catches when exercising locally, thus improving the morale and the mental state of Veterans. 23 rose to the challenge and caught a total of 244 fish in that period, represented by 31 different species from the boat and shore.

154 were landed whilst boat fishing by 17 different Veterans, and 90 from the shore by 16 Veterans. 18 of those were specimen fish, 14 from the boat and 4 from the shore and more importantly all fish were returned alive to the water as we promote a catch a release policy, whereby nothing is retained unless intended for the table.

LT CDR Steve Clements RN from Weymouth won the Boat Most Species Competition with 18 different species.

(Black Bream, Bull Huss (13lb 4oz, 6.010kg at 110.4%), Conger, Dogfish, Red Gurnard (2lb 1oz, 0.935gram at 165.0%), Tub Gurnard, Mackerel, Plaice, Pollack, Pouting, Blonde Ray, Thornback Ray, Scad, Tope, Turbot, Whiting, Ballan Wrasse and Cuckoo Wrasse).

CPO Pete Hegg from Portland won the Shore Most Species Competition with 25 different species. (Bass, Black Bream, Gilthead Bream, Bull Huss, Cod, Conger Eel, Dogfish, (2lb 8oz 12dms, 1.155kg at 101.8%), Garfish, Grey Gurnard, Red Gurnard, Tub Gurnard, Mackerel, Red Mullet, Pollack, Plaice, Pollack, Pouting, 3 Bearded Rockling, Scad, Shore Rockling, Smoothhound, Sole, Trigger Fish, Whiting, Ballan Wrasse). Both winners won £100 cash prizes.

The Clubs Best Specimen Fish was a Spurdog of 23lb 8ozs, 10.659kg at 196% caught by WO1 Tom Worthy from Plymouth, which was also the 2nd best Boat Specimen fish caught in the country during 2020. The event was hailed a tremendous success by all members and put the Club into the Top 20 Angling Trust Affiliated Clubs in the country in our first year. Recruitment and the Most Species Competitions continue in 2021.

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT

BY CRAIG BUTLER I hope you are all keeping safe and well and some of you have been able to wet a line.

The past month has been very much a feast or famine for the anglers managing to get out.

With travel restrictions still in place until the end of March anglers continue to fish locally to home.

When the fishing has been good the infamous Bristol Channel spring codling run has been showing some good potential with 3-4lb fish making up a good percentage of catches.

-Good numbers of bass have also been making regular appearances which is good to see. This time of year normally throws up the bigger fish so it’s been encouraging to see 4-6lb fish showing up.

The Ray fishing continues to be good with the spotted Ray numbers increasing at Minehead.

The month ahead should see the spring codling continue along with the rays and bass and with the prospects of fishing in the warm spring sunshine’s just makes it better.

Good luck in the month ahead.

Not much has changed…if anything this February 2021 has been much worse with nothing happening and not much to look forward to in March. Things change and those changes are often unpredictable…so we must ‘hang in there’ and hope for better things to come as they surely must.

IF any fishing can take in March place then the inshore reefs and banks will produce better than normal with plenty of species including turbot to 16lb, brill, spur dogs, blonde rays, smooth hounds, undulating rays, congers and huss.

There’s usually plenty of baitfish about on the Shambles Banks which is a good sign for the spring and traditionally gives us all hope after the winter months.

When an extreme and unprecedented long lasting situation develops as it has now, business models collapse and those few who are in a happy state of self-sufficiency are at a massive advantage both financially and mentally. There are indeed many extremely worried charter boat owners out there right now.

This is when having a steady local trade can be an immense bonus. IF restrictions are eased, then it will be local anglers who can help to get the charter businesses running again. March often suprises with good showings of mackerel and herring plus good catches of very early bream up to 2lb on the inshore reefs along with huss, dogfish, pout and wrasse. There will be anglers who will not find these species (bream and mackerel apart) particularly alluring but then there are many who would just love to get out to sea and enjoy the day which, with these species, would involve plenty of bites and action.

Apart from the reefs, the Banks can also produce quality fish especially when specifically targeting turbot and brill with the possibility of plaice appearing. The Kidney Bank to the west of Portland is famous for some excellent ray fishing with blondes to 25lb possible.

Offshore wrecking trips are at their very best in March for pollack with drift fished mackerel good for finding ling on the neap tides at the end of the month.

The very first Channel Island trips of the year used to start at the end of March but it is extremely doubtful if a return to the Island is likely for some time yet.

We are all hoping for a reversal of fortunes and long for ‘normality’…let’s hope it returns soon.

LANGSTONE HARBOUR AREA BOAT FISHING REPORT

Well goodbye February. According to the few who could go fishing, those who couldn’t travel to their boats weren’t miss‐ ing much. A late cod or two and a run of spurdogs were the highlights. The whiting worth catching have moved off leaving a horde of bait-robbing pin whiting in their place. There are still a few roaming conger on open ground but as March opens they will go back to the rocks and wrecks, and we will see the first of the plaice as they come inshore to spawn. They will be in better condition in a few weeks’ time after they recover.

March also heralds the opening up of the bass restrictions. The previous EU rules were rolled forward into 2021 which means recreational anglers can keep up to two bass per day from March to Novem‐ ber inclusive, minimum size 42cm. This may change so watch out for further an‐ nouncements. The first mullet have arrived back in the marina which seems early, but the sea temperature is trending upwards so perhaps this is normal now.

Many charter boats are taken out of the water for maintenance during the fishing lull in February, but with the much-anticip‐ ated easing of lockdown restrictions many are taking bookings already. The first few months on the new charter season prom‐

ise to be very busy as anglers make up for lost time.

This month we usually report on the Southsea Marina Angling Club Presenta‐ tion Night, but with no actual presentation night yet, we will celebrate the successes here.

Club Champion is Kevin Johnson (11 Points). Kevin also takes the Bream Cup (3lb 13oz); Bass Cup (11lb 10oz); Pollack Cup (12lb 14oz); Best Specimen (Bass) and Pairs Cup with John Jones. He how‐ ever did leave some other cups on the table, and John Evans won the Plaice Cup (2lb 2oz); Bill Arnold won Species Hunt day competition; Peter Churchill won the annual Species Cup (33); Neil Glazier won the Cod Cup and Cod Pool (22lb); Jim Col‐ lett won the Catch & Release Cup with a Spurdog (22lb 8oz). Junior Species Cup went to Jake Kelly (13); Ladies Cup to Aedy Merritt for her bream (1lb 4oz) and Ladies Species Cup was won by Haley El‐ lis (10). Congratulations to all the runners up as well! Out of respect for the Lock‐ down restrictions, some of our competi‐ tions could not be run this year so those cups will not be awarded this time.

I’m hoping for good weather as soon as we are allowed to travel again. I think there will be a lot of boats on the water that day!
