WINNER The Dutch Sea Angling Federation chose the beaches around Domburg in the Netherlands to host the FIPSMer World Championships between 16th to 23rd October 2015 for the Junior and Youth teams.

The Angling Trust England Junior team consisted of; Jaon Voller, Jack Cairns, Thomas Wartnaby, Adam Howard, Joseph Smith, David Graham (manager) and Chris Clark (assistant manager).

The Junior team arrived three days early so they could practice the three match venues, Domburg, Joossesweg and Zoutleland before the start of the championships.

Fishing was good with plenty of Bass, Dabs, Flounders and Whiting during practice, but winter had really set in with a freezing north east wind chilling the anglers to the bone.

There were mixed results during the championships with some highs and lows, but the team pulled together and gave their all on the beach every day. Joseph Smith and Jaon Voller both managed day wins during the championships and were presented that evening with trophies and gifts from the championships sponsor.

We are a funny bunch us fisherman. We will quite happily go out and spend several hundred pounds on the latest rod/reel and not bat an eyelid or think we have to justify the price but are we always getting value for money? I’m not so sure. That being said, when I first got to try out Snowbee classic waders that have recently been re-launched I had to double check the RRP. At a mere £89.99 for the full chest waders and £65.99 for the Thigh version I thought there may have been a mistake. You would think you might be getting an ‘inferior’ product for that sort of money but that’s certainly not the case. Made with 4mm neoprene they not only offer reliable protection from the water but they keep you relatively warm as well. The neoprene allows a lot of movement with it being a stretchy material you feel no restrictions what so ever. The boots are lightweight and come complete with a cleated sole making them usable on a multitude of terrains. The built in chest pocket is a great addition as it enables you to keep those useful tools like snips, bait elastic etc close to hand when on the mark. A problem I have found in the past with other such products is the shoulder straps. These have been known to dig in when supporting the weight of the waders but Snowbee have combated this issue by providing padded straps that are fully adjustable.

These really are a necessity of the modern day beach angler but you wouldn’t look out of place on your local reservoir or stretch of river either.

After the first day the Youth team were in second place with the Dutch in first place in the last hour of the match.

Team England Junior team did well to finish in fifth positon overall in the championships. After some very consistent fishing Jaon Voller, who is in his last year as a junior, went out in a blaze of glory with a well deserved silver Individual medal win.

On day four there was a glimmer of hope with Callum taking control of his zone and Ryan also doing well. Toby, Keelan and Charlie were fishing well, but not able to find as many fish as hoped, but the difficulty for them was being pegged in the middle of a groyne. It was still very close between England and Portugal competing for second place. With the final results in sight it was England who managed to secure team silver.

Youri Mounderhous of the Dutch team took the gold individual medal with an incredible four day wins. Toby Oldfield was very unfortunate after lying in third place going into the last day that he was not on a good peg, but Callum Graham took full advantage of his peg to take podium position with the individual bronze.

The team would like to thank Tronixpro, Turkana fishing, Vass rainwear and waders, Asso line, Christchurch Angling Centre, Christchurch and District Fishing Club, Dorset Police Fishing Association, Colin Olver and Pete Tope for all their continued help and support for the Junior team.

The practice sessions went well apart from a rough sea on the first day, but valuable lessons were learned and the team caught more fish, and sorted out rigs and tactics during the week leading up to the main match. All the team worked extremely well together sharing tactics and information.

Team England were; Callum Graham, Toby Oldfield, Ryan Casey, Keelan Owen, Charlie Tudball, Henry Randell (reserve) and Malcolm Stote (manager).

The second day produced similar, although Team England were being chased by the Portuguese team. The Dutch team had another day win again doing well in the later stages of the match.

by Lee Bollingbroke Well I have plenty of time to write this report as for the first time this year I have had a ten day forced reprieve from charters due to the terrible windy conditions of which I don’t have to tell you all about, we seem to have slight lulls when I don’t have a booking and blowing a hooligan when I do they call it sods law.

It’s all the worst as well because fishing is so good with lots of cod whiting rays etc etc but one thing that has come to light in these awful conditions is cowboy skippers, with their eye on nothing more than a quick buck and sod the safety and misery of their wet windswept paying guests knowing full well that anglers will be lucky to catch a small whiting or if you’re lucky a tea plate size ray.

These anglers should boycott any future trips with these type of money grabbing skippers most of them have full time jobs any way and if an accident god forbid did happen it would have reparations for all skippers good and bad buy the authorities that licence us.

That’s my rant over for this report, as I say when we have made it out the fishing has been fantastic with lots of good codling up and over the five pound mark rays to seven pounds and lots of good whiting as my pictures of some of our November catches will testify.

A summit was held yesterday (19 November 2015) at the Department for Environment, Fisheries and Rural Affairs (Defra) to discuss how to address failing stocks of Atlantic salmon in England after 2014’s catches were the lowest on record, prompting Trout & Salmon magazine to launch a Save Our Salmon campaign which the Angling Trust & Fish Legal were voted by readers to lead.

The summit, which was attended by senior government officials including the Chairman and Acting Chief Executive of the Environment Agency and the Fisheries Minister George Eustice, heard about the many pressures on salmon and a number of immediate actions were proposed before the meeting in a joint paper from the Angling Trust & Fish Legal, the Atlantic Salmon Trust, Salmon and Trout Conservation UK and The Rivers Trust.

In a speech at the summit, the Angling Trust called for an end to all netting of salmon and the designation of salmon and sea trout as sport fish, to recognise the far greater social and economic benefits of catching these fish on rod and line than in nets. The Trust also demanded that the Fish Passage and Screening Regulations should be introduced urgently, after more than five years of working their way through Whitehall.

It also called for firm but fair regulation of agricultural pollution, which has been identified by the Environment Agency as the principal cause of poor salmon populations in English rivers, and for abstraction reform which has still not been brought forward to parliament.

The Trust noted that most of the actions required to save salmon were not in the gift of the Environment Agency’s fisheries department, which has been subject to repeated cuts in funding from government, but required action by other parts of the Agency and across government departments.

The Environment Agency announced that it would be launching a 5-point plan for restoring salmon stocks in the new year which would include actions to: Improve marine survival Further reduce exploitation by nets and rods Remove barriers to migration and enhance habitat

Maximise spawning success by improving water quality Safeguard sufficient flows Defra also announced during the day that in light of the long-term decline in salmon stocks, Defra and the EA are considering a ban on the killing of wild salmon by nets and rods unless the rivers or estuaries can demonstrate the fishery is sustainable.

The changes being explored (which will be consulted upon in 2016) include: The suspension of commercial net fisheries; Mandatory catch and release of salmon for recreational anglers on some rivers; Rules on angling methods to reduce the accidental killing of rod and line caught salmon.

The Angling Trust is concerned about widespread introduction of mandatory catch and release for anglers, particularly given the lack of confidence in the current stock assessment methodology on individual rivers.

Imposition of catch and release may lead to the alienation of some anglers which will cause a further decline in rod licence income and the many donations of time and money to the work of organisations like the Rivers Trusts, which are vital to the future restoration of our rivers.

Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust & Fish Legal, said: “We welcome the Environment Agency’s initiative in organising this summit, the headlines around tackling long-standing issues with the water environment and the plans for a suspension of all commercial net fisheries. However, we will need to see evidence of action being taken and results being delivered before believing that this is anything other than warm words.

"Salmon Action Plans were published ten years ago, but have largely sat on shelves gathering dust. Anglers already release more than 75% of the fish we catch and we are not responsible for the decline in fish stocks, which has been caused by decades of government failing to protect both the freshwater and marine environment. Hopefully, this summit will prove a turning point for the fortunes of these magnificent fish.”

By Scott Smy The capture of a potential new british record shore-caught Gilthead Bream of 10-7 by unattached Plymouth angler Ryan Carter from the Kingsbridge Estuary has certainly been the outstanding capture over the past month. Having been fortunate enough myself to capture a ‘giltie’ of over 9lb from the shore I can appreciate just how good a capture this is and good luck to Ryan with his record application.

The on-set of heavy rains over the past week has resulted in the usually gin clear River Tamar taking on an appearance which is more akin to the Bristol Channel and this coloured water seems to have triggered the conger eels into feeding.

Having put in a considerable number of trips over the past few months Gary Mitchell of Rodbenders SAC was richly rewarded for his efforts with a cracking PB eel of 40-9 which was one of several caught by Gary during a late evening session at Devils Point. Not to be outdone Giuliano Pellecalle of Pot Black SAC also landed a PB eel of 33-1 during the same session on a crab bait intended for Cod. Both eels were returned alive after weighing.

The last set of smaller tides resulted in an increase in the number of Cod being caught from the Tamar, with most fish being in the 5-8lb bracket. Lug/squid and crab/cuttle bait combinations appear to have been most successful. Venues such as Devils Point/Mutton Cove at the bottom of the river and Saltash Pier further up will give the best opportunity of latching into a Cod with the chances of a double figure fish increasing as we get closer to Christmas.

There is currently some very good eel fishing to be found out on rough ground open coast marks, with the area between

Frowards Point to Scabbacombe Head worth a try for heavy weight eels and huss. Steve Federicks of Castaways SAC landed a very good eel of 34-1 whilst Gav Cuthbertson and Dave Down of the same club registered bull huss of 13-2 and 12-9 respectively, with Gav’s fish being a new Castaways SAC club record and breaking the previous record held by Matt Parry of South West Sea Baits (and secretly he is just a tad gutted). Get back out there Matt!

Prior to the recent deluges which have turned most rivers the colour of chocolate, the unseasonably mild temperatures didn’t seem to have impacted upon the flounder fishing which traditionally is better during colder conditions. Rob Batten of Ford Hotel SAC made the trip up to the Teign during the latest round of the Plymouth and District Shore League and managed several flounder including a cracker of 3-5 which was a new PB. During a recent spell of settled weather yours truly managed to get a quick weekday visit to the Teign and managed 2 flounder, with the best a very respectable 2-13 although most of the day was spent feeding crabs and tiny schoolie bass. Hopefully by the time of the December report I’ll have more to report on the flounder front and Kingsbridge will have started to fish by then.

Prior to taking his boat out of the water to fit a new engine, Malc Jones of Sea Angler 2 confirmed that the fishing on the wrecks was still excellent with numbers of Cod to 17-18lb and Pollack to 13-14lb being caught. Malc has confirmed that Sea Angler 2 will be back in the water in December which usually heralds the start of fishing for big Pollack over the wrecks off Plymouth (for which he is now taking bookings).

EAST SUSSEX DIARY

ANDERIDA FISHING CLUB On Tuesday 27th October in Pevensey Bay 14 anglers fished a club match, Nearly all the fish caught were whiting and pout. The winner was Jim Whippy with 14lb 6 ½ oz. Second was David Tame with 10lb 13 ½ oz and third Tim Lane with 10lb 6oz. The biggest fish and superpool winner was Jim Whppy with a whiting of 12 ¼ oz.

On Wednesday 11th of November 17 anglers fished in dry and fairly calm conditions and again Jim Whippy was the winner. Jim managed 60 whiting for a winning weight of 22lb 2oz. Second was Colin Isaacs with 18lb 6oz. Third was Kim McGreevy with 14lb 5oz and fourth Tim Lane with 14lb 1 ½ oz. The heaviest fish and superpool winner was a bass of 3lb 13 ½ oz for Phil Metcalf.

THE RAILWAY TAVERN The 17th round was fished on Sunday 1st November with Steve Merner landing 8lb 14oz of whiting to win.

Second was Dennis Puttick with 4lb 12oz and third Kevin Merner with 4lb 11 ½ oz. The heaviest flat was a flounder of 9 oz for Dan Puttick and the heaviest round, a whiting of 9oz for A.J. Puttick.

THE EASTBOURNE NOMADS On Monday 28th September The first nomads cup was fished with the winner Paul Christopher catching 9lb 11oz 4dr of whiting, pout and a codling. Second was Keith Erridge with 7lb 4oz 12dr and third David Hollobone with 6lb 8oz. The heaviest fish was a cod of 4lb 6oz for Paul Christopher.

On Monday 12th October the second Nomads match was fished with Malcolm Payne winning with 11lb 4oz. Second was Tony Kirrage 10lb 1oz and third Neil Marshall with 9lb 12oz. The heaviest fish was a cod of 4lb 2oz 2dr for Tony Kirrage.

On Wednesday 28th October Paul Christopher won the match with 13lb 7oz. Second was Dan Wood with

13lb 5oz and third Malcolm Payne 11lb 13oz. The heaviest round and superpool winner was Malcolm Payne with a cod of 4lb 4oz and the heaviest flat a dab of 4oz 4dr for Dan Wood.

OVER FIFTIES On Friday October 30th 15 anglers fished at Whitehorses with Paul Christopher coming first with 15lb 6 ¾ oz. Second was Malcolm Payne with 9lb 2oz, third Sam Samson with 8lb 11 ¾ oz and fourth Tony Kirrage with 7lb 14oz. The heaviest round was a whiting of 11 ¼ oz for Paul Christopher and the heaviest flat was a flounder of 13oz for Malcolm Payne.

GENERAL The shore fishing has improved !! earlier in October with the mild weather some nice bass were caught on surface lures, with some anglers managing to catch their 3 bag limit with some nice fish to 8lb such as Antonio Santos who caught several fish on poppers, and father and son Mathew and Michael Love using savage surface lures. Although there are still plenty of whiting some nice cod have also been caught recently. Fish to 10lb have been caught between whitehorses and Eastbourne Seafront. On Friday 13th November plenty of cod were caught from Eastbourne and Pevensey shoreline. Gavin Croft weighed in 3 cod the following morning at Anglers Den, 7lb 13oz, 7lb 4oz and 5lb 12oz using lugworm and he lost two others!! Brett Green fishing on the same night landed a nice sizable Thornback (returned alive) and his friend Scott managed 3 cod to 8lb using livebait rigs. Marco Marsiglia landed a couple of 5lb+ fish at whitehorses and several other fish were also caught that night.

Earlier in the week Bill Simms managed a nice 7 ½ lb fish and his friend Tim Harmer caught a couple around the 5lb mark. Phillip Coates Landed a nice bass caught on squid over low water.

SILVER SPRAY REPORT As you can imagine I haven’t really got a whole lot to report about the last months activities except about the weather. Not sure I can remember a sustained period of high winds like this for such a long time.

Although it finally looking like backing off to the north this weekend and then dying down. Despite all this though we have managed half a dozen trips over to the Isle of White for cod and whiting. Cod have been coming up every trip into the mid teens which

is nice to see. As November pushes on, provided we can get out to them, we should start to see those 20lb+ fish. The whiting have made a great start as well, using mackerel baits 2/0 hooks around slack water we are getting plenty of them at the 2lb plus mark.

Hopefully next month we have done a few more trips and will have more to chat about.

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins The fishing in Poole Bay during October along the beaches and Piers was excellent with some boats landing over 100 Plaice in a single session (many have been returned alive) the average amongst the boats is 50 + per trip although these fish tend to be in the 1lb to 1 1/2lb stamp there are a few larger fish amongst them. Ragworm tipped with uncooked Prawn or slipper limpet has accounted for the bigger hauls, in amongst these fish there are plenty of Gurnards, Dabs, Red Mullet and a few Garfish. Sea Trader skipper Adrian Ponchard has been finding some fine fish with the one of the best a specimen size Brill being landed by Steve Daley whilst fishing along the Piers. There have been some good size Bass being caught with many double figure fish being reported, Random Harvest skipper Andy Adams landed a 10lb + Bass and 3 small Cod whilst at anchor, the best Undulate of this month is 18lb 2ozs caught by Andy Hopkins on Sea Trader.

As the temperatures continue to drop and the sharp cold of the early morning’s sets upon us our attentions turn to Cod, Whiting and Flounders, during November the Poole charter fleet headed towards the eastern marks searching for those big winter Cod and Whiting. Mistress Linda angler Conn Bratcher landed a specimen Turbot of 17lb 12 ozs using a size 4 hook and a tiny piece of mackeral whilst fishing for whiting, Gary Taylor and Mark Turner managed to whittle out a couple of Cod making it a very productive day. As the fishing improved the Autumnal weather took a turn and Atlantic gales battered the south coast confining most boats to port for 2 weeks or more.

by Andy Robbins of Poole Sea Angling Centre, as the day dawned with our 1st hard frost of the winter the previous bad weather had subsided to leave a gentle northerly wind and flat seas, 80 anglers entered the comp 20 Cod were weighed in and the winning fish of 24lb 10 ozs was caught by Ron Lake, Top private boat went to Tom Smith’s ‘illusion’ whilst top charter boat went to Philip Higgins’s Mistress Linda Now December has arrived Poole Harbour will produce some fine Flounders and as the early morning frosts increase the fishing will get better, there are already a few fish being caught in the upper reaches of the Harbour, Flounders of 4lb + can be expected during the winter. The Poole Charter boats tend to move back to fish the Poole Bay marks looking for those well fed winter cod and big whiting, Rays and congers will be providing plenty of sport and will often take the smaller baits whilst you are targeting the whiting.

For your last minute tackle and bait requirements on the Quay you can use Sea Fishing Poole (opening times 7am to 9 am during the winter) or Poole Sea Angling Centre (opening at 7am up to Christmas) both have a good range of bait

/ tackle which can be pre ordered for you to collect as you depart on you trip.

SIFCA have introduced a recreational angling committee and I asked Robert Clark (SIFCA) to write a brief explanation (below) of the mandate for this new committee.

Southern Region - Recreational Angling Strategic Group ‘’A Southern Region - Recreational Angling Strategic Group has held initial meetings to enable a dialogue between Southern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority and recreational fishermen in the areas of Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight. The purpose of the group is to enable Sea Angling representatives to effectively engage and communicate with the Southern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority so as to inform decisions made by the authority and to enhance the sea angling experience in the IFCA area. The Strategic group aims to be inclusive and representative. To achieve this aim, whilst enabling the group to retain a strategic function it will seek to engage with representative organisations in particular those affiliated with a wide membership recognising that the diversity of angling interests. The group aims to achieve effective geographic representation and reflect the interest of shore anglers, private boat anglers and charter boat operators. Presently the Group has representatives from the Wessex Region Angling Trust, Isle of Wight Angling Trust, The Professional Boatman’s Association, The Poole and District Sea Angling Association. The group is also seeking new members particularly from the tackle and trade sector. The third meeting of the group will be held in November 2015, on the agenda: Marine Conservation Zones, Bass management and IFCA enforcement. About the group Robert Clark of the Southern IFCA said “we are delighted to be engaging with the recreational anglers in such a positive forum: we all recognise there are many challenges in inshore fisheries management. The team for 2016 has a blend of experienced anglers with previous international experience and two new caps, Callum Jones and Adam Molloy. Callum and Adam have progressed to the England team from the Angling Trust’s England Talent Pathway, a programme designed to support young anglers to learn about international tactics and techniques.

Seventeen youngsters took part in the 2015 programme which was led by current England Seniors, Junior and Youth managers Chris Clark, David Graham and Mark Hurcombe and supported by current England Youth anglers and qualified coaches Callum Graham and Charlie Tudball.

The Angling Trust has announced the England Junior team for the 2016 Sea Angling Liaison Committee (SALC) Home International Shore Angling Championships.

WINNER

England will look to build upon their success in the 2015 home international where the team took the gold medal. The 2016 SALC Home International Shore Angling Championships will be organised by the Angling Trust for Men’s, Ladies, Youth and Junior teams on the beaches of North Norfolk and the River Nene Estuary from 7th - 9th July. The Championship will be fished on a conservation basis using a measure and return format using a points system to determine the results.

Further details of England teams and management will be announced early 2016.

Sea Angling News, December 2015 NWASAC Match Report: 9th Round of NWASAC Personal Members Championship, Sun 25.10.15, Perch Rock & Golden Goose Banks, New Brighton (16 rods).

The two low water banks at the mouth of the Mersey were on top form with both numbers and variety of fish on offer to worm, crab and fish baits.

With the fish feeding throughout the match, speed fishing came to the fore and Bootle’s Joe Perry’s skill at this earned him the win from Zone A (Perch Rock Bank). In the upriver Zone B, Jim Morris found five dogfish to win that zone for runner-up place. Heather Lindfield’s angling style suits high water marks more so her third place was an impressive performance at this low tide venue.

A solid result from Andrew Dawkins allowed him to regain his series lead with just one match remaining.

The Boat Match League has gone from strength to strength in the last few years, allowing some of the most competitive anglers in the area to compete against each other on a level playing field. This year saw the expansion of the league to other ports to push the competitors outside of their comfort zone in both Lymington and Poole, fishing aboard Saxon Mist (skippered by Mick Stone) and Strongbow (skippered

by Dick Peckham).

Fishing was often fast and furious with multiple areas fished during each competition in order to make the most of the wide range of fishing areas available from the ports. In all, just under 1000 fish were landed (and returned), comprising 33 species, during the 6 matches of the league.

One week before the competition the whole squad set camp in Bundoran, set for a week of practice. After several days of fact finding fishing sessions, the six man team spent over a hundred hours of rig making, including bait preparation sessions, as it would take one and half hours before every competition to prepare the bait supplied.

The start of the competition saw a move to another hotel, and a very warm welcome from Irish hosts. With 14 different nations competing, the atmosphere was set. Day one saw Team England finish in second place just behind Italy. Day two put them on top of the leader board. With one day to go the potential of Gold was on the cards. With the final results out and only one fish making the difference, Team England secured silver just behind Italy. What an excellent effort, Italy is totally sponsored by their nation, what an effort from our self-funded England Team.

All was not lost as England had the best ever Worlds medal tally, including Gary Galbrath with an individual Gold, and Mark Smith with an individual Bronze, and of course Team Silver.

The species caught over the three days were: Pollack, Coalfish, Wrasse, Ling, Whiting and Dogfish.

The weather started off very dull but fortunately it changed to become a very good day. Fish caught consisted of dogfish, pouting, smoothhound, whiting, spotted and undulate rays, bull huss and tub gurnard.

LDSFC ED WINS LYMINGTON AND DISTRICT SEA FISHING CLUB- MATCH BOAT LEAGUE Top matchman Ed Taylor has secured first place in Lymington and District Sea Fishing Club's 2015 Boat Match League sponsored by Loni's Angling Centre.

Ed was presented with a trophy and £100 cash for winning the league by Derek Smith (Club President) and Steve Bachelor (Team England Boat Squad member), who has just returned from Ireland where his team secured Silver in the FIPS-M World Boat Angling Championships.

After narrowly missing out on first place last year by one just fish, Ed narrowed his focus to make sure he was going to be on the top spot in 2015, in what again proved to be a hotly contested series.

After a rocky start in the first match and only managing 5th place, Ed then proceeded to win 3 out of the 5 remaining matches to win the series with 449%, beat-

England World Silver Medal success for Steve Batchelor Steve started his England Boat career after qualifying for the Home International Team at a squad weekend at Weymouth in 2012. Shortly afterwards he was picked to fish for his country in Stornaway in 2013, returning with a Gold medal and second overall as an individual. Steve’s form continued in 2014, when he fished in Portrush Ireland as captain picking up a team Silver medal.

2015 brought a new challenge with selection to the England Worlds Team, becoming part of a six man team fishing in Bundoran, Donegal, Ireland. The team members including Gary Galbrath, Colin Searles, Cliff Newbold, Mark Smith and Rolf Marschalek.

The total focus for the squad being team work, sharing information and ensuring that had the best opportunity to win Gold. The team were informed that the three day competition was fished on a bait supplied basis, including 50 Ragworm, 3 Mackerel and 10 Sandeels per angler a day, fishing to minimum size limit of 30cm.

With this in mind some of the squad flew over to Bundoran one month before to practice on a competition to get an insight to the venue. Steve topped the leader board becoming the top European angler on the competition, and more importantly, with a better understanding of how to catch fish on the baits selected and

The 2015 Cod Open was as last year fished in perfect conditions with light winds and sunshine for most of the day. We had 180 anglers fishing (5 ladies, 5 Juniors, 7 OAPs, 163 Seniors). There were 19 anglers who brought fish to the scales with a total of 22 Codling.

The top angler won £1000 and all other anglers had a choice from the £3000 prize table. All anglers who weighed in and attended the presentation went home with a prize.

The SLO had it's eleventh competition at Eastney on Saturday the 7th of November 2015 from 6pm until 11pm. 38 anglers fished in 2 zones with 34 anglers weighing in. The 261 sizeable fish consisted of 1 undulate Ray, 1 spotted Ray, 5 Rockling, 15 silver eels, 1 Tub Gurnards,35 Dogfish,1 Dab,127 pout,74 whiting and 1 cod a total of 288 fish were caught. The Winner of the match was Dale Brenton from Southampton with 20lb 8oz 8dr from peg 8 consisting of a 14lb 10oz Undulate, 11 pout, 1 whiting and 1 topup. Second place was Mike Brown from Southampton on peg A20 with 15lb 2oz . Third place was Matt Brook on peg A15 with 13lb 14oz 8 dr. Penn points on weight will be awarded to Dale Brenton, Mike Brown and Matt Brook. Heaviest round was Dale Brentons 14lb 10oz Undulate ray and the flatfish pool went to John Delaney with a 9.5oz Dab(Both £72). Zone Winners picked up £100, nominated fish pool winners with Whiting Dave Lane 44cm(£36).

NWASAC Final round of NWASAC Personal Members Championship 2015, Sun 8.11.15, Maddock Bank, Wallasey, Sun 8.11.15 (22 rods).

There were probably fewer fish and the weather was wetter and windier but this was almost a rerun of the previous match at Perch Rock a fortnight ago in that there was another win for Joe Perry and Jim Morris was once more the runner-up (again, with dogfish crucial to his score).

Fish were mainly small and the centre pegs at this low water bank in the Mersey Estuary were the most productive.

Lymington’s Andy Dawkins is confirmed as the 2015 Personal Members Champion; in truth, this welltravelled angler had sewn up the championship before a line was cast and his effort and consistency has earned him the John Norbury Trophy.

John Waugh’s flounder at short range on his last cast took the flatfish pool but this multiple former champion finished as series runner-up with the consolation of winning the Mersey Cup. Bill and Heather Lindfield are the first ever husband and wife pairs winner and will be awarded the Neil Williams Memorial Cup.

ALDERNEY ANGLING REPORT

For fear of repeating every report you may be reading n this issue……………………..***** weather! Say no more!!

No boat sport has really taken place so lets crack on and tell you what we can about how the shore fishing has been. Of course the weather has played a major part in the difficulty of trying to get on marks, we are so exposed here that when the wind is over a constant 30mph it just envelopes around the island. However we are having a good time on the Red Mullet, best year for a number of years now with Scott Audoire, who has had a terrific month, has had two PB’s both at 1lb 10oz! Plenty more less than that with some nights seeing up to 8 or 9 per rod. Sole have been thin on the ground though but what has come out has been good. Scott once again with fish of 2lb 8oz (daylight!) and 2lb 10oz topping out what everyone else has been having. Some good Black Bream fishing to be had on the float with fish to 3lb as they pass the island, we are though getting hoards of 1lb fish which don’t quite provide enough sport. Also on the small side we have never seen so man Couches Bream – these have now become almost a resident fish. Fair bit of Bass around too, fish to 4lb frequent on worm baits and fish to 7lb coming out on the lures. The big fish fishing is where we have found it difficult because of the weather. However Darren Braby managed a 9lb+_ Huss whilst Tope fishing but can’t wait for the weather to settle and we can get back amongst it. Plenty of Thick Lipped and Golden Grey Mullet about too, it seems if someone does target them it is with some sort of success.

Its not fishing but many of us love doing it – squidding!

Plenty of it down the quay. If the weather allows I am really looking forward to the next 10 weeks – come on you wind blow yourself out!!

Alderney Angling Annual Lure Species Hunt In its fourth year now with some superb cash prizes and one of the best prize tables for any lure event. This year it is being held over the weekend of the 3rd/4th September 2016 and runs for 33 hours. Maps and species available al supplied an separate cash [prizes 1st/2nd/3rd for Local and Visiting anglers. Costs of flights yet to be determined but we generally get a fair discount. Results of last year below, each prize winner walked off with £100+ of prizes outside of the cash ones! 26 species caught overall!!

Firstly being a Worm only event limits the species to be caught which in turn there are nominated species anyway with a bag limit of 2 of each with size limits…………..hmmmmmm! It makes for a frustrating comp normally won by the person with the most persistence in sitting tight and not get flustered by the lack of the sought after quarry. In this case though it was won by the person who is currently on fire…………..Scott Audoire. Only 9 attended and species allowed were Bass, Red Mullet, Black Bream, Couches Bream, Plaice and Sole.

No Sole or Plaice were caught and although Couches were caught none of any size were landed.

Scott has followed his recent good form with a match win, his bag consisting of a Red mullet of 1lb 10oz, a Bass of 2lb 13oz and one Bream for a total bag of 5lb 3oz. Plus he played his joker so had double points for the win! Second spot went to Ross who spent half the night in the curry house and thought a Poppadum was on the list and 3rd went to Mick ‘Anyone Can Fish’ Maurice who again played his joker and gained double points.

Welcome Aboard Hello and welcome aboard the ‘Fishing Dartmouth’ (www. fishingdartmouth.co.uk) column with myself, Rob Miller Top Story The top story of this month is about the National flounder Championships which were held in Teignmouth on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th November run by the Teignmouth Sea Angling Society. What a soggy beginning to the event with strong winds and persistent rain for the 276 entrants. This on top of the wet conditions earlier in the week saw lots of murky freshwater running into the river, making the river resemble the Bristol Channel. But despite this the entries were up on last year which goes to show the anglers appreciate a well run event. Sadly the fishing has hampered with only two fish over the two pound mark bought to the scales with the best fish of the day going to PSAA member Mike Johnson with a good fish of 2lb 7oz 3dr with the next best going to Rich Voisey with another good fish of 2lb 4oz 3dr.

So it was all to fish for on the Sunday Day two saw lots more flood water running into the river from the hills which hampered the fishing again. There seemed to be similar numbers of fish to day one but none could break the 2lb mark so the overall winner was Mike Johnson with his Flounder of 2lb 7oz 3dr from Saturday and the Best Overall Junior was Dartmouth angler Lewis Sharam with his Flounder of 15oz 3dr . Well done Mike and Lewis.

One thing that was noted was how many prize places, three in fact, which had to be settled with a toss of a coin for equal weighing fish. All the final results are listed on my site at www.fishingdartmouth.co.uk/how_fishing.htm The TSAS actively encourages ‘catch and release’ and it’s always a pleasure to see the Flounder swim off again This month’s Boat report and outlook The local charter boats ‘Anglo Dawn’ (Chris Roberts), ‘Outlaw of Dartmouth’ (Owen Mallia) and ‘Samuel Irvin 3’ (Ian Noble), and who all send me regular reports of what their anglers are catching. With the onset of the Winter weather is has been unsettled but when they get out they all say there are quality fish to be had and the catches have been very good.

Mid Channel wrecks - This time of year they’re mainly targeting Cod, Pollack and Ling. The Cod have thinned in numbers to the point where anglers don’t target them as a species. Most that are being caught are in the 7-9lb range but there are bigger fish to be had with the odd fish in mid teens coming to the net. The Ling are here in reasonable numbers.

The best this month was caught by Len from Liverpool with a fine fish of 31lb 5oz which he caught aboard the Brixham based charter vessel ‘Spot On’. The Pollack are still around

in numbers as well and some big ones, well in the teens are still being caught. Hopefully we’ll see the first of the ‘lunkers’ moving up from the Western Approaches soon Some nice Bass are showing as well on the inshore wrecks.

The biggest I’ve heard of was a very nice specimen for 7 year old junior angler Joseph Cooper of 12lb 6oz caught from a boat out of Dartmouth.

‘Skerries Banks’ - Further inshore the ‘Skerries Banks’ is fishing okay for Plaice. Reasonable numbers are being reported and hopefully this will continue for a short while before they move out into the Channel to breed. The sizes seem to be a bit smaller this year and a lot of anglers are returning the smaller ones to fight another day.

The Rays are still around in numbers with some nice Blonde Rays coming to the net. The best Blonde Ray was a cracker of 34lb 7oz 8dr for PSAA member Gordon Richards fishing from his own private boat. On the same trip he also had two other specimens of 24lb and 28lb. For the most up to date catch reports from our area please visit www.fishingdartmouth.co.uk/how_fishing.htm This month’s Shore report The shore fishing has taken a big hit with the rough conditions affecting the coast and the plentiful rain colouring the rivers. However a few good shore fish have been reported.

The best I would say was a 15lb 7oz 3dr Bullhuss for PSAA member Keith Nathan. Some Wrasse are also being targeted with Garry Harding and Paul Scott weighing in an identical pair at 4lb 10oz 11dr.

With any luck the weather will subside and the Flounder fishing will be back on track in the River Teign and Kingsbridge inlet. Plus I would hope the Codling and large Whiting will start to make a show on the popular marks of Berryhead and Hopes Nose

Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association Sorry for the lack of report last month but an error on my part resulted in me missing the deadline. Fishing has certainly improved with the arrival of the cod with congers, thornbacks and dogs making up the bulk of catches, though as I write this no boats have launched from Burnham for a fortnight due to excessive wind!

The are still a few bass around though numbers are dwindling but there is always a chance of a decent one while cod fishing.

Cod started to show in the last week of September with father and son, John and Martin Quinn having a great days fishing landing a number of cod including 3 doubles to 14lb 2oz, the biggest falling to John. As we moved into October the cod were still showing well with Martin Quinn again amongst them with another double. Nigel Devey and Andy Georgiou also found a few cod with Andy landing a cracker at 15lb 2oz.

Fish of the Month for September was won by John Quinn with a cod of 14lb 2oz.

We held 2 competitions in October both hampered slightly by wind.

The first one on 11th was won by James Devey with a cod of 4lb 2oz. There were a number of thornies, conger, dogs and

whiting caught but none brought to the scales.

The second comp was the Tony Holly trophy fished as a best specimen on the 18th and had a better forecast with 10 members and 5 guests taking part.

Winner with a fine huss of 10lb 4oz was Anthony Georgiou, second with a doggie of 2lb 8oz was Martin Quinn and third with another dog of 2lb 4oz was Andy Georgiou. The cod pool was won by Anthony Georgiou with a cod of 5lb 14oz.

Fish of the month for October was Andy Georgiou with a cod of 15lb 2oz.

Four club boats were out on the 1st of November and steamed down to Watchet in the fog. Plenty of fish and a number of cod, the biggest 8lb 4oz again to Andy Georgiou and another nice one of 7lb to Fred Saxby. No competitions yet in November but we do have one scheduled in for the 22nd with our AGM 3 days before.

If the wind is kind over the next month then fishing should be very good indeed with plenty of rays, congers, dogs, whiting and hopefully a few more cod.

by James Wigglesworth I would like to start this month’s report by stating how much I dislike wind! I’ve personally lost three boat trips this month to the weather which I’m sure you will all agree is rather frustrating. I suppose it’s to be expected this time of year though .The herring shoals are now abundant in our waters which in turn should bring up some of the predators that feed on them. The cod fishing has been a bit patchy still with some trips boating up to 12 and then a trip to the very same spot the following day not producing any. That being said, the fish that are around seem to be of a very good stamp with a lot in the 6lb to 9lb bracket. We are still to see that 20lber but with the odd double figure fish around I doubt it will be too long. Almost all the fish being taken that I have heard of are coming to fresh lug but I dare rag and crab will catch on their day and the bigger specimens favouring larger squid baits. As this month’s paper goes to print we are coming off the end of a really good blow and the temperature has really dropped so with more settled conditions and a good cold snap I would like to think that general numbers of fish should increase. The coming weeks will be interesting and we should be able to gauge what sort of season we are going to have. There are still other species to keep you busy on those cold inshore days though. The

ever present thornbacks along with eels and dogfish are still showing in numbers from the grounds close to Watchet.

The Minehead charter fleet are mostly concentrating their efforts around the Dunster and Blue Anchor areas in search of the cod but the ray fishing can still be productive from the favoured marks west of the harbour with all four species still a real possibility. I have heard reports in the last day or two of the first of the spurdogs have turned up. This is not unexpected as we have a good run of these every year. The Ilfracombe boats usually see the best of the sport on the spur front as they migrate up the deeper parts of the channel.

Some days can see well in excess of a hundred boated and although not everybody’s cup of tea it can provide a nice alterative to sitting inshore cod fishing all day. There seems to be a distinct lack of decent whiting again this year. Last year they didn’t show up and it looks like it could be going the same way. There does seem to be a good amount of pin whiting around with the odd fish of a pound or so thrown in but the nice edible size fish just aren’t there. I guess there is still plenty of time yet though.

Good luck to you all who are venturing out in the coming weeks. That lump of a cod is out there somewhere. Stay safe and fish hard.

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT

By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle The past month has seen the cod fishing improve considerably along the shore of the Bristol Channel. Catches have been blowing hot and cold, and the conditions, tides and location are playing a massive influence on it. Unlike last year when masses of smaller codling were wide spread competing all over the place for food. This year we have a quality stamp of fish that are not in such big number and therefore not competing so hard for food . The past month they have tended to have a liking for rougher ground or the muddy ground with a bit of depth nearby. And worm , squid and crab baits working best. Every year a pattern to it becomes clear if you look carefully enough. The past few months I've noticed the sporadic catches of cod and codling have been greatest and occurred As the biggest tides of that set of tides are dropping away. With just the odd fish on the risers and a modest handful on certain neap tide marks.

With the best stamp of cod/codling available in many years with 4-9lb fish being the norm, but we are seeing a few year classes of fish this season with 2-3lbers, 4-6lbers and 9-12lbers. It's amazing how few anglers are about on the beaches, especially mid week. While I've been here and there putting in some hours,I've only seen the odd angler on occasions. Tapping up this report in the last week of November. We are just being hit with the first of the winters cold snaps and NW stir ups and this will only mean one thing and that's better cod fishing. Traditional the next 8 weeks is prime Bristol Channel cod time both beach and boat.

I'm a big fan of regular short and sweet 1.5 - 3 hour sessions this time of year. Maybe only having half a dozen cast a time.

Three short trips often pays out better than one. The past few weeks has seen some quality small eyed Ray's caught over high and low water at a Minehead. The next several weeks is a great time to target a bigger Small eyed. Look for a settled period and a mid range rising set of tides to give the best chance. As we all know fish don't have rules and guide lines so if conditions are not perfect when you can fish, just go for it. Along with the small eyed will be the feisty little spotted ray to give a bit of variety. The trusty Bristol Channel thornback will remain a positive target species. And a welcome catch if the cod are playing hard to get.

ever remember weighing into the high twenties being reported, but one can only record 21lb being our best fish so far.

Other fish making the report are Channel Whiting, which have been in the area for more than six weeks now; as the season moves on, so the fish are getting bigger; best fish so far 2 ¾ lb. One other fish worth noting is the Spotted Ray; these fish have turned up in great numbers, with some boats netting in excess of 10 fish per trip, which is quite unusual.

It is mid way through the Cod season and the weather is not doing us any favours.

At the moment most trips are having to be cancelled because of relentless SW airflows.

There has been the odd occasion when the wind has moved round to the South. This direction we can seek shelter in the Solent.

As most of you know, it can be a difficult place to fish during day light hours. There are plenty of Cod there at that moment,it's a case of whether you can tempt them to take your bait . Most recent trips we have been catching 2 to 9 Cod a trip,so it's well worth

making the effort.

Just before this latest run of bad weather, fishing of the Needles was starting to peak. There seemed to be a lot more Cod in the double figures along with some bigger Whiting.

My annual Bass catch and release competition is coming to an end this year,you still have until the end of November to catch that winning fish. The fish to beat is 14lb 12oz caught by John Blake.

This can still be beaten ! I will be continuing to run this competition 2015 -2016.

By Arthur Savage According to statistics, this year has been the windiest year since 1994 and I wouldn’t argue with them; over the past two weeks we have managed just two days with more poor weather forecasted – it is very disappointing, as this is one of our best Cod seasons for many years. The Solent just keeps on producing, with many angling boats going into the double figures on some trips; the average size of the fish is around 6lb, but you do stand a chance of one much bigger, as we have experienced.

The weed has all but gone, so you can fish almost anywhere throughout the Solent. If you are worried about the bigger tides, you can fish down to the East,

i.e. East Brambles, North Channel, East Ryde Middle, on the Neaps, Solent Bank, West Lepe and Newtown; all of these marks are producing Cod, plus sizeable Channel Whiting.

The Cod grounds South of the Needles are also productive; however, as mentioned before the weather has pushed most boats into the Solent over the past week or so and most of the marks have only been fished a few times, but with some really good fish reported.

The bonus for most of the boats was an early run of Pollock through the area with our best Pollock I can

A third of the 68 anglers enjoying the event caught Cod but the biggest of all fell to ‘Lazydaze’ skipper Jeff Semple whose 12lb Cod was more than enough to claim the £400 first prize. The high catch rate was due to restricting weather keeping the anglers in the Solent with Lee Price finishing second with a 10.15lb Cod, 1 of 9 caught on his private boat that day. The top three were capped off by none other than World Champion boat angler Gary Galbraith at 8.75lb fishing aboard ‘White Maiden’.

The day does not just belong to the individuals as Jeff Semple and Tim Daw were the top two man team with a combined weight of 19.85lb with Steven Rickman and Steve ‘George’ Phillips runners up for 12.45lb. John Baggs produced a superb Whiting of 3.6oz for the heaviest other fish prize with Rich Burgoyne second for his 2.4lb Bass.

Last Laugh was the Top Charter for the second time in recent years with 5 anglers catching a total weight of 27lb 8oz.

Port Report What a terrible month November was. Today the Weymouth charter fleet went to sea for the first time in 17 days….dreadful! This must go down as the worst year ever for cancelled trips…unbelievable.

And so, to the highlights of this gale struck month.

Nov 1st was flat calm, sunny and unseasonably T-shirtedly balmy. The Portland Race was flat calm with a big spring tide. A stack of perfectly sized joey-mackerel was at the head of the flood Race and probably fighting a losing battle against the south running tide…and the bass…big ones….were waiting.

These are the days and perfect sea conditions that make charter skippering the best job ever. The bait was easy to catch and placed into the live bait tank; the boats were lined up for the first approach into the Race area and hopes were high. A run of bass in the 5lb to 7lb range with several into double figures and topping out with Dorset angler Richard Spracklen’s14lb 6oz made this by far the best bass session of the year and gave rise to November being the month we had all dreamt of with weather to salvage what had been a hard year.

A lively bream session followed by drifts on The Shambles Bank producing turbot and a good amount of brill shared amongst the boats confirmed this to be the best ever start to November anyone could wish for.

The next couple of days saw further bream, bass and flatfish sessions with a very productive blonde ray session taking place aboard Lyle Satiford’s SupaNova from the banks west of Portland.

And then the weather started to change and go rapidly downhill with the XC Weather- Watchers having the best time of their lives watching the computer generated pretty colours change on their six hourly cycles.

Anglers were provided with plenty of ammunition to torment and bombard skippers with days ahead of their trips to expound their knowledge as to the predicted forthcoming conditions on their allotted day and to grill we unfortunate few (the dejected skippers) as to whether ‘their trip (often a week away) would be on’.

Despite the opening week of strong winds the of the Weymouth charter fleet were very fortunate to be involved in another of Chris Caines’ brainchilds, the annual Pairs Competition, organised by Weymouth Angling Centre. With the aim of the event for each ‘pair’ to catch two of each species with no size limit imposed as everything is returned, the participating anglers caught an amazing diversity of species with the top pair on Day One totalling 19 different species but with the majority of the teams catching between 15 to 18 species. The overall winners after Day Two had found 21 species which really does show how many varieties are available for the skilful angler to catch.

The Shambles fished well at the start of the flood tide with a few turbot and a very good run of brill coming to boats opting to fish there rather than in The Race which also provided a reasonably lively bass session. Several boats opted to try for whiting at anchor on The Adamant Bank and were rewarded with a very good run of fish, the east side bank proving far more productive than the west side of Portland marks.

The weather looks unsettled again this week but if any boats do go to sea then it will be all about the bass and whiting with a short session for flatfish. The bream have gone so no point trying for them now but they are replaced with the whiting. The whiting marks also produce a good mixture of rays, conger, smoothounds, pout and dogs to keep the rods busy.

December is, of course, all about the weather. It conditions are kind then bassing can easily continue throughout the month with artificial lures accounting for the fish. Expect a few cod to turn up from the bass marks.

Anchoring sessions for whiting will be a mainstay with the marks producing all those species mention above along with a few bonus cod and an increase in conger.

Blonde rays can provide good sport from the west side marks and these banks will also provide cod, bass, turbot and undulate rays during the anchoring sessions.

Calm days, if there are any, will allow boats to try the grounds well west of Portland off Abbotsbury on the most prolific whiting marks which offer very real chances of cod and good sized gurnard of mackerel and squid baits.

There will hopefully be some fair weather opportunities to try the offshore wrecks for pollack.

There may even be a few cod left on the wrecks after such a bumper year for this species.

Nine juniors and ten adults braved the strong icy cold north-westerly wind to fish the match on East pier West Bay. fifteen of the entrants managed to catch fish to weigh-in, due to the dirty colour of the water three dogfish were caught along with the usual species of pout, bass, whiting, rockling & shanny. Adults took the top five places with the top junior Nathan McMaster taking sixth place this also won him the Junior Shore Festival Trophy for being the highest placed junior. after the match we all retired to the Salthouse for hot drinks and the presentation of the trophies.

Chesil Beach Report

Come the end of October we saw the cod fishing slow up along Chesil, with flat calm and crystal clear seas playing a big part as these conditions are far from perfect for our favourite winter quarry. Weymouth Angling Centre held their annual Abbotsbury Cod Open. 180 anglers signed in for the comp to what proved to be an extremely difficult day. Out of the 180 anglers only 19 anglers returned to the weigh in with sizeable cod. Ryan Casey won the comp with a brace of cod for a total weight of 10lb 13oz winning him a healthy £1000. Runner up was last year’s winner Dave Lane with a brace of codling for a total weight of 8lb 12oz and 3rd place went to Ant Buik with another brace of codling for a total weight of 8lb 4oz. Best cod went to Ross Stewart with a nice fish weighing 8lb 12oz and the pairs winners were Dave Lane and Ant Buik with a combined weight of 17lb. The comp was extremely well run it was just a shame the fish didn’t want to play ball. As we moved into November we have had low pressure after low pressure swinging in from the south west, which has given the whole of Chesil a spurt of life and when there has been a gap in the weather anglers have been taking advantage of this opportunity. Cod have been showing the whole length of Chesil this year with Abbotsbury and Ferrybridge being the most productive. So far this year these areas have produced some of, if not the best cod fishing in the south west of England. With the conditions being the way they are in the shape of some strong south west gales smashing waves into the shingle there has been little chance of the flatties at West Bexington but there is still some good fishing to be had there on the codling and some good whiting at night. Derek smith and Paul Blake of Lyme Regis SAC decided to have a session at West Bexington using two rods each. Target species were sole and cod. Paul was the first into a fish on the cod rod with a prime plump 5lb codling that couldn’t resist his black lug bait. Derek was next landing another good codling of 5lb 7oz. Shortly after Paul had a few rattles on his sole rod armed with size 6 hooks to 10lb snoods on a flapping rig with small worm baits. The rattles continued so Paul picked up the rod and as soon as he lifted into the fish he realised it was a lot more than a sole. At first Paul and Derek both thought he had hooked into a tidy cod but after a good 10 minute battle they finally landed Pauls prize in the shape of a fine undulate ray weighing 12lb 1oz which is now the Lyme Regis SAC shore caught club record. Abbotsbury has produced some fantastic sport on the cod especially around the Dragons Teeth area.

Also there are still a few nice ray about with a good chance of a nice undulate or thornback at night on fish baits. There has been a lot of double figure conger showing at the moment from Abbotsbury to Portland.

A big fish bait put anything over 70yards over high water in the dark doing the trick. I have not been to the Bridging Camp for a while myself but the anglers with a boat to cross the fleet or the super fit prepared for the miles trek across the shingle from Ferrybridge have done very well. Steve Perry and Sam Quilliam

had a tidy session at the Camp landing a total of 14 cod between them. The first four hours seemed to be doomed with both anglers loosing multiple sets of tackle and it seemed like there were no cod in front of them. Eventually after a patient wait it was as if someone had flicked a switch and let the cod out to play. Steve had 8 cod all over 6lb, the biggest being 7lb 6oz and Sam managed 6 cod and the fish of the day which was a good fat 9lber. Ferrybridge has also produced some awesome cod fishing along with some good action at night on the conger. Wayne Hand and Dean Fowler ventured down to fish with some friends at the Severn Estuary Anglers SAC meet. They have both had lots of success along Chesil in the last couple of months and this trip was no different with plenty of codling up to 7lb and Dean also had another good Chesil undulate weighing 12lb 4oz. It has been really nice to see so many double figure undulates hit the shingle this year and I hope next year gives us the same. As we enter December the fishing will be pretty much the same as this month although the bigger whiting have started to show and it looks like it might be a good year for the better fish. To target the bigger whiting a good sized fish bait is your best option, even whole sprat can be a killer for the species and they are very cheap bait from your local supermarket. There is still a lot of bass along Chesil at the moment but I haven’t heard of or seen any bigger fish with most being around 3lb. If the sea is not too rough then a lob of 10yards can be very effective with a big mackerel or squid bait. For the cod in my opinion daylight over low water is the best time to target them, with lug worm, crab and squid baits producing the goods.

Usually December into January can produce some very good cod so good luck to all and happy hunting.

The Angling Trust will tell the European Commission it is wrongly targeting sea anglers following the publication this week of the Commission’s proposals on bass fishing in 2016 "to halt the dramatic decline in this important stock".

The proposals include "a complete fishing ban for commercial vessels and recreational anglers in the first half of 2016", and in the second half of 2016 "a monthly one tonne catch limit for vessels targeting sea bass and a one fish bag limit for recreational anglers".

The Angling Trust's response said: "Government figures show that recreational sea angling is enjoyed by more than 800,000 people in the UK and is worth £2bn to the economy. Bass is our most popular sport fish and a huge amount of bass caught by anglers are returned to live, breed and fight another day.

“Anglers have been warning about commercial fishing causing a decline in bass stocks for the last 20 years and it is only recently that the European Commission and the Member States have started taking the issue seriously. Whilst we welcome the proposals to further restrict the commercial harvesting of bass it is monstrously unfair to lump all forms of bass fishing together.

“There is absolutely no equivalence between a trawler dragging a huge net across the ocean and a group of anglers going out at the weekend with a rod and line and fishing sustainably within agreed size and bag limits. The Angling Trust intends to tell the Commission it is picking on the wrong target."

The European Anglers Alliance (EAA), of which

the Angling Trust is an active member, has already identified that the technical detail of the Commission’s proposals are unclear with regards to whether the ban on fishing in the first six months of 2016 refers to recreational fishing. The Angling Trust is currently waiting for a correction from the Commission in order to clarify this.

David Mitchell, the Angling Trust’s Marine Campaigns Manager, said: “Members of the public fishing recreationally for publically-owned fish stocks will find it very difficult to accept why they are being so severely restricted while it’s business as usual for many commercial fishermen in the second half of 2016.

“Over the next fortnight we will be liaising with our colleagues in the Bass Anglers’ Sportfishing Society (BASS) and our partner organisations in the European recreational fishing sector in producing a carefully worked response to the Commission's proposals.

“This will focus on trying to ensure all sectors contribute to conservation of bass stocks in a more balanced and proportionate way. We intend to put this forward for consideration at the December meeting of the Council of Ministers where we expect the Commission's original proposals to be substantially amended."

KENT Earlier this month the Angling Trust met with the UK Fisheries minister George Eustice and briefed him on the need for further restrictions on the commercial harvesting of threatened bass stocks.

Court victory shows protecting our precious rivers and wetlands is no longer a ‘last resort’ Today, the Angling Trust, Fish Legal and WWF-UK's Judicial Review secured a major step forward for the protection of our country's most important rivers and wetlands.

David Nussbaum, Chief Executive of WWF-UK, said: “This takes the ministerial handcuffs off the Environment Agency which can now better protect our most precious rivers and wetlands.

The High Court judge recognised the need for urgent action to protect these precious places and the wildlife that lives there.

“The Government must now act with haste and put necessary measures in place to tackle pollution from farms that is devastating these specially protected sites.”

As a result of the legal victory today, the Government must evaluate the use of mandatory Water Protection Zones (1) alongside voluntary steps by farmers, which have so far failed to protect these vulnerable places from farm pollution.

Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust & Fish Legal, said: “This is a win for cherished species like the kingfisher, salmon and trout which are seriously threatened by this pollution.

The environmental organisations claimed that ministerial involvement had stifled necessary action to reduce pollution from farms harming England’s ‘natural’ crown jewels.

“This is a clear message to Government that they must stop dragging their feet and they must now take the necessary steps to improve the health of these precious rivers and wetlands.”

The judge, Sir Andrew Collins, said: “It is obviously of the greatest importance that proper measures are taken as soon as possible to meet the obligations of the Directive (2). We all know our wildlife is suffering as a result of pollution and not only just wildlife, people as well.”

David Wolfe QC, said: “Defra and the EA’s new statement should mean that they will now actively consider WPZs as the way of delivering benefits for the environment rather than waiting until other approaches had demonstrably failed before even turning to them.
