What a difference a month makes calm seas temperatures in the high seventies today it just does not seem possible we had such terrible weather just a month ago, it is still having an effect on bookings and when you think about it many tradesmen that would have booked a fishing trip are playing catch up with jobs that should have been finished weeks ago many who could not get to work are out of pocket still the ripples are far reaching.

When anglers can get a day or two off and managing a trip out on charters they are being rewarded amply with plenty of rays many in double figures, some very big whiting up to four pounds yes it’s not a typing error four pound whiting and many close to three pounds.

Plenty of big spur dogs well off and charter boats with the anglers that fancy something different and can spend a bit extra dosh on a long distant trip are being rewarded with

sixty and more fish per trip and fish up to twenty pounds as caught by retired charter skipper John Rawl.

A few hounds have started to show up also a good sign for this great fighting fish only small fish at this time in our area but reports are coming in that several ports not far from us are catching some bigger fish.

Still a few codling being caught up to four pounds just a few miles off Clacton but these will soon be gone until the Autumn when we hope and it should be a much better season .

Also some early reports of mackerel but I am a bit sceptic may be the odd one or two perhaps we don’t normally catch them until mid-May. So there you have it get out on the charter boats now you wont be disappointed and many of the boats have had a tough time and need revenue and support if you want them around in the future.

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE

There has only really been one ‘plaice’ to be this month and that is at Beesands near Kingsbridge where some incredible plaice fishing has been experienced by both local and visiting anglers. This is similar to what happened in 2016 and some believe it is due to the severe storms experienced earlier in the year.

I have heard some anglers catching as many as 40 fish in a session, with the average size of fish around 1-8. The largest fish I have heard so far from Beesands is a fish of 2-8 caught by Dan Bassett which now leads the way in the South West Sea Baits Plaice Comp. It does seem that the neap tides are fishing much better than the springs and its’ essential that the water is relatively clear along with bright/sunny conditions. If you don’t get all the elements in your favour then a blank is very much on the cards. Rag/lug baits have been the most successful.

In addition to Beesands, Slapton is also worth a try when conditions are spot-on.

Although it been regularly fished, I have not heard much coming from the ledges at East Portlemouth although this spot is usually about size rather than quantity.

With the recent spell of settled weather I decided to have a look out on the rocks for a huss and after a short session was rewarded with a nice fish of exactly 11lb which was returned after weighing. It’s important to return the big females this time of year as they come inshore to lay their purses. Any of the rock marks around Prawle, Dartmouth or Scabbacombe have

the potential to produce big huss.

Although Chesil hasn’t been on form yet for plaice, it has been producing some good ray at the western end in the deeper water.

Gav Cuthbertson of Rodbenders SAC found a cracking undulate of 13-7 which was a new PB. If the water is coloured then it is definitely worth chucking out a large fish bait for rays when fishing Chesil at the moment.

It’s not often that I get pictures of youngsters for inclusion within this report so I was really pleased to get a picture and report from Dan Bassett as his young lad Charlie had a cracking early season mullet of 3-12 caught on a light 5-12g rod. This was Charlies first ever mullet and was returned after weighing. Nice one Charlie.

On the boats I understand that Size Matters has now returned to Plymouth following a winter season in Liverpool and a few weeks in the Scottish Highlands chasing huge skate (which proved to be very successful).

Hopefully I should get a report from Kev McKie next month. Sea Angler 2 has been based up at Dartmouth for the past week in preparation for the Dartmouth Plaice Comp taking place this weekend. Fishing the Skerries anglers on-board Sea Angler have been fishing some nice plaice to 2-8 along with blonde ray into double figures.

CHESIL BEACH

CHESIL BEACH REPORT

Fishing along chesil beach has been very slow at times this past month with anglers turning up to near perfect conditions with very little to show for their efforts. The water clarity still isn’t at its best with recent reports of the sea being slightly milky in colour which could explain why things still haven’t kicked off as of yet.

I suppose the proof was when myself and a few others entered weymouth anglings flatfish open along with 161 others with only 25 anglers catching sizeable fish on the day. A total of 22 plaice, 9 dab and 2 flounder brought back to be measured. It was great to see the majority of anglers returning their fish back to the sea with the angling centre offering prizes for fish being kept alive for release at the end of the event.

Well done to Ant Davies who won the match with 3 fish going 102cm and picked up an impressive £500 cash, 2nd place went to Dave lane with 2 fish for 97cm and 3rd to Mike Taylor with 76cm.

Since the competition things have improved slightly with some fair sized plaice showing to a few anglers and the odd turbot making an appearance. Paul Hepworth managed to find a few fish with some lovely sized plaice, he also fished chesil a few days prior to this targeting hounds and landed a respectable 9lb smoothy.

There have been a few reports of hounds being caught along beach now with peeler crab being the best bait to target them but don’t neglect a nice squid bait as they will also pick them up with no hesitation as

Paul Blehs proved with three hounds all falling to squid baits.

The ray fishing on chesil beach has been fairly steady with mainly undulates being caught on big fish baits. Ben stockley has been back on the blondes with an outstanding session landing 4 ray with two doubles the biggest going nearly 13lb.

The east end of the beach has chucked up a few surprises as always with Rob Batten and a few mates went on the intention of targeting ray which then quickly turned into a bream session with all four of the lads setting new pbs!

Wayne hand also headed to the east on a recent trip and managed a fair size ballan wrasse on a lovely chesil evening. The best baits to target bream are worm and squid baits while the wrasse tend to fall to worm with the better fish coming to crab.

Personally I love this time of year as things start warming up and you just don’t know whats going to come along next. There have been a lot of reports of garfish showing around Weymouth which can provide great sport on light tackle and dare I say it the mackerel shouldn’t be far behind now as long as the weather holds out! With the waters clearing day by day the fishing should improve and hopefully the summer species will move in. Flatfish should start to make more of an appearance at the west end of the beach and hopefully we see some more bream and hounds soon too!

EASTBORNE NOMADS On Tuesday 20th March the Presidents cup was fished with Paul King winning with 1lb 15 ½ oz, Pauls catch was mainly dabs and ling. Second was Phil Chapman with 1lb ½ oz and third Tony Kirrage with 11oz. The heaviest round was shared with a 4oz Ling for Paul King and Tony Kirrage.

On Monday 16th of April the 1st Flack Cup was fished and the winner was Dan Wood with 4lb 2oz (including 2 dogfish). Second Ian Hopper with 2lb 6oz and third Paul Parsons with 2lb 5oz. The heaviest round was a dogfish of 1lb 9 ½ oz for Dan Wood and the heaviest flatfish was a flounder of 9 ½ oz for Michael Moule.

THE RAILWAY BEACH FISHING CLUB On Saturday 17th March the club fished a match in Pevensey Bay. The winner was Ken Filtness with 2lb 9 ½ oz. Joint second were Gary Windeatt and Tristan Parsons with 1lb 9 ½ oz. It was cold and blustery with the majority fish being Flounders and Ling. On Sunday 1st April the bulk of the fish caught were flatfish! Mainly dabs and flounders. The winner was Michael Adamson with 1lb 9 ½ oz. Second was Ricky Moss with 1lb 4oz and 3rd Dennis Puttick with 1lb ½ oz.

ANDERIDA Anderida Clubs annual Big Fish bash was held on Sunday 24th March and was a great success with 22 anglers fishing. Each anler can bring back just 1 largest flatfish and 1 largest round to the scales. The 3 category winners were Heaviest Flatfish Tony Fitch.

Heaviest round Rod Reynolds and the Heaviest combined weight winner Gary Banfield.

On Monday 19th March fishing was hard with the winner Paul King catching a Flounder and a ling for 11oz. Second was Colin Isaacs with 10 ½ oz and third Jim Whippy with 7 ¾ oz. The heaviest flat was a Flounder of 9 ½ oz for Paul King and the heaviest round was a ling of 3 ½ oz for Kevin Morgan.

On Wednesday 28th March conditions were warmer and so a few more fish were caught. The winner was Kevin Morgan with a mixed bag of a Plaice, Flounder and dabs with a total weight of 3lb 15 ½ oz. Second was Colin Findley with 2lb 7 ½ oz and joint 3rd were Paul King, Harry Spencer and Jim Whippy all with 2lb ½ . Heaviest flatfish was a plaice of 1lb ½ for Colin Findley and

the heaviest round a ling of 5oz for Colin Everest. On Tuesday 17th April fishing at White Horses, Colin Everest won with 1lb 7 ½ oz. Second was Tim Lane with 1lb 2oz and 3rd Richard Cowderoy with 7oz. The heaviest round was a Smoothound of 1lb ½ oz for Colin Everest and the heaviest flat was a Plaice of 9 ¼ oz for Tim Lane.

OVER FIFTIES The 6th Over fifties match was held at White Horses, Pevensey Bay on Tuesday 20th March with 24 anglers fishing. Plenty of fish were caught, mainly dabs and flounders.

The winner was Dave Rudland with 4lb.

Second Gary Hazelgrove with 3lb 10oz, third Mike Perfect with 3lb 8 ½ oz and fourth Colin Sargeant with 3lb 7 ¾ oz. The heaviest flatfish was a flounder of 12oz for Dave Rudland and the heaviest round fish a 5 ¾ oz whiting shared between Tony Kirrage and Gary Hazelgrove.

The 7th match in the series was held on Tuesday 3rd April with 18 anglers taking part. The winner was Ian Hopper with 3lb 12 ½ oz. Second Paul Parsons with 2lb 11oz, Third Tony Fitch with 2lb 7oz and Fourth Vernon Vivian with 2lb 1 ½ oz. The heaviest flatfish was a Flounder of 1lb ½ oz for Vernon Vivian and the heaviest round a whiting of 5oz shared between Tony Fitch and Dave Rudland.

The Eighth match in the series was fished on Tuesday 17th April with 24 anglers fishing again at White Horses. The winner was Tony Kirrage with 3lb 3 ½ oz. Second Keith Erridge with 3lb 3oz, Third Malcolm Payne with 3lb and Fourth Ian Hopper with 2lb 10 ¾ oz. Heaviest round fish was a dogfish of 1lb 2 ¼ oz and the heaviest flatfish were Plaice of 10oz for Tony McDonald and Malcolm Payne.

GENERAL Mixed bags can be caught along the East Sussex coast at the moment with Smoothounds beginning to show as well as random Black Bream. Chris Eyre caught a surprising 3lb Black Bream at Langney Point On Saturday 7th April, not only is it early but large for this area as Well !!

Stephen Donoghue manage a mixed bag on Thursday 12th April, his catch included whiting, pouting, dabs , plaice, bass and a smoothound. Local Angler Jim Whippy took his Grandaughter 13years old Annalise fishing in Pevensey Bay and she caught her first sizable Plaice.

Spring has at last emerged and the fish are starting to feed, the offshore Spurdog fishing late in March produced some good fish around the 20lb mark and on one of Poole Dolphins trips produced 5 new PBs for anglers with fish ranging from 17lb to 21lb, the distant wrecks have thrown up some cracking Pollack around the 15lb stamp with many more smaller fish as well.

Locally the fishing had been hard with a few small Plaice, Whiting and Gurnards on the drift and Rays, Dogfish and odd Turbot at anchor. Anglers aboard Matt Rowe’s boat Piscary have been have plenty of success Ray fishing. Lady angler Kim Burns caught her 1st Turbot of 4lb 8ozs much to the disgust of her husband who has yet to land one – no jealousy there. It is with a big smile that I can report the much sought after Black

Bream have arrived with local anglers Tony Partridge, Keith Trim and Martin Gough fishing onboard Mistress Linda getting in amongst the action to land the early Bream.

SILVER SPRAY REPORT

I hope everyone is enjoying the hot weather over the last week r so, long may it continue. Spring/ summer fishing is properly underway now. Inshore we have had the first black bream of the year, more should arrive on the next spring the first weekend in May and then some bigger ones shortly after. On the drift we are getting some cracking early season plaice as they start to feed after they have finished spawning. Tim Davies has the biggest so far at a whopping 4lb 8oz. Turbot and brill have mostly been on the small side so far but

Phil Folkes did manage our first double of the year at 11lb just to prove the bigger ones are down there. Out on the wrecks the big Pollock are still plentiful although we shall shortly stop winding the lures and start bouncing to target the summer cod.

In the last week we have seen 3 decent sized john dorys which is always a welcome bonus. You don’t always see 3 in one year let alone 3 so close together. The biggest went to Russ Orchard at 5lb 9oz.

Evening trips start at the beginning of May to target the bream and plaice.

Match sea angler Jack Reynolds of Worlebury tried his luck at wreck fishing out of Weymouth and did not disappoint.

Sailing on board ‘Fish On 2’, skippered by Josh Simmonds, he came up with the best catch of the day.

The 11-year-old using a Shimano Ax Braid 20-30lbs rod and Penn 555 Multiplier reel caught a pollack weighing in at 9lb 5oz.

The fish was caught using a Sidewinder ‘Skerries’ Eel 6” 25 gram lure.

Elite sea angler Jack Reynolds of Worlebury took the short trip to the Weston beach for the Weston-super-Mare Sea Angling Association (WsMAA), Spring Open match.

The 11-year-old won the longest fish in his zone, with a flounder, coming away with a cash prize of One hundred and fifty pounds. Quite an achievement considering the adult anglers that he was up against.

April has been an excellent month for Jack

Jack was using a Zziplex Match Pro sea fishing rod with an Infinity 8000 reel. The reel was sponsored by Michael Busby of Weston-superMare. Earlier in the day Jack had dug his own lug worm bait to use in the competition.

It’s been a difficult couple of months along the North Devon Coast with the bitter cold March weather having a prolonged impact upon sport with sea temperatures down and poor reports deterring anglers from venturing out.

At the end of March a few calmer days enabled Ilfracombe Boat Bluefin to take anglers to deep-water marks off Ilfracombe in search of spurdog. The big packs were undoubtedly departing with surprisingly few boated. Kevin Pike did however enjoy success boating a new Appledore Shipbuilders record spurdog of 21lb 6oz.

As April arrived and warmer conditions prevailed boat anglers landed several quality huss in Bideford Bay and the first of the seasons smoothound. It is to be hoped that the first mackerel will be showing by the time this is published which signals the true start of summer sport.

Shore anglers have landed a few huss with the best a fine specimen of 12lb 4oz to the

rod of Paul Hutchings. Rockling, Pollock and dogfish have kept rod tips rattling along the shoreline. Jonathon Stanway enjoyed success from the Ilfracombe area landing a fine small-eyed ray of 11lb 2oz.

Ray should start to move onto the surf beaches at Woolacombe, Putsborough and Saunton as the sand warms and sandeels arrive. Combe Martin SAC hold their everpopular Open at Putsborough beach on May 12th.

Several bass have been reported from marks in the lower Taw and Torridge estuary with the best topping 8lb. Bass sport should steadily improve with the chance of gilthead bream.

Grey mullet are being caught from local harbours with several caught over 3lb and plenty of bigger fish seen but as always proving elusive. There is optimism that fishing in the estuaries for mullet and bass will see a big improvement following the new IFCA byelaws that will see the cessation of netting.

SPECIES LEAGUE 2018

FISHING GUIDES DIARY

Do you enjoy sea boat fishing, like the variety of fish that are around the coast but are not that bothered about filling the freezer.

Then why not come to some of the Species League events, fish with like minded anglers on some of the best Charter Boats around who specialise in Species Hunts. Enjoy a friendly competition and pick up some tips on how to catch more fish.

No membership fees, just a small charge per trip (normally £5), monthly on Fridays, bait provided.

The 2018 Species League finally got under way on the 30th of March with three boatfuls of anglers setting out from Lyme Regis. In far from perfect conditions 23 very wet anglers set to work, trying to catch what they could on a variety of fishing marks. Fishing took place at anchor initially and then on the drift as the skippers tried their hardest to find the different species. Despite the conditions, at the end of the day a total of 15 species had been accounted for including whiting, cod, huss, cuckoo wrasse, pollack and plaice.

Boat winners for the day were Steve Batchelor (Pegasus), Perry Dack (Blue Turtle) and Richard Ferre (Alice Rose).

The bait for the day was supplied by Darren Herbert at The Bait Box and thanks goes to Lewis Hodder of Lymebay Charters April 13th saw the Species League entering new territory with the competition being held out of two ports for the first time,

Weymouth and Sheerness.

In Weymouth, on Meerkat and Supanova, the target was big fish and the anglers weren’t disappointed with congers, blonde rays, spurdogs, huss and turbot being boated, as well as some smaller species.

Boat winners for the day were Brett Lomas (SupaNova) and Ray Barron (Meerkat).

After the event the trophies for 2017 were finally presented.

On Dentex out of Sheerness, seven species were accounted for, exceeding expectations. Dabs, smoothounds, rays, dogs and whiting were the order of the day with boat winner Matt Osbourne catching a very welcome big points earning bass.

The next event is on the 4th of May with the competition again taking place at two ports, Poole and Minehead.

Recently I had an enquiry from the grandparents of 10 year old local boy Corey Brody for a fishing lesson. Corey had shown signs of interest in fishing but with no family members that fish they were at a lost end. With Corey being autistic this complicated it a little. It is proved that engaging in something of interest is a real benifit for focus and general well being and motivation, whether it be fishing, cars, football or whatever. In this case for Corey its fishing.

After a quick chat with Corey and his grandparents a couple of weeks ago we set a time and place. So on Saturday we met up at Blue Anchor beach on a glorious afternoon. In just a short time Corey was practicing casting with a spare rod while we had a baited rig out trying to catch a fish.

At this point I have to mention that I was amazed at just how instantly Corey picked things up. It was like he’d been fishing

loads of times. Two things in particular I was amazed to witness was the way Corey tied a blood knot, it was like he’d done it a 100 times before. I didn’t even have to demonstrate how to tie it he just took the line and swivel from me and I talked him through it and there was none of that all fingers and thumbs stuff that is often the case when doing something fiddly. Then when it came to bait cutting and knife etiquette . It was simply a case of showing Corey what to do and he just did it. No slashed ripped or random cutting. Just perfect cuts and bait cutting.

To round of an amazing short session Corey spotted the only bite he had and caught his first ever fish in the shape of a dogfish so we even managed to get a bit of safe fish handling in before we packed up. His smile says it all and. Myself. I feel totally humbled to assist Corey and what a pleasure it was too.

ENGLAND BOAT TEAM GATHERING The Tubertini sponsored England Boat Team gathered in Weymouth on April 15th for a team building day and to talk tactics prior to the 2018 Home Internationals being held at Cork in June. Having won the gold medals at the last two Home Internationals, England are keen to make it a hat trick of wins.

Unfortunately the weather put paid to their planned boat trip so it was off to the stone pier for some gar fish action before they headed back to the Weymouth Angling Clubhouse for a discussion about rigs, tackle and tactics.

DEVON ANGLER LANDS GIANT COMMON SKATE

On 3rd April after a few months of planning and lots of research Cornish Anglers and good friends Nathan Giddy and Kris Dawson drove and met fellow friend Edward Reilly at Lee Mill in Plymouth for a 13 hour drive to Oban, Argyll in Scotland for a Common Skate Fishing Trip for Nathan’s birthday.

The First day saw Kris landing his first ever

Common Skate- this was a Male weighing 114LB, followed by Nathan Landing his first ever Monster of a Skate which is though to be the biggest Male Skate caught off shore, measuring 65Inch Wing span and 83Inches Nose to Tail, estimated at 156LB. Both fish were caught using whole Bluey and using 5-6 Foot pulley rigs.

LANGSTONE HARBOUR AREA BOAT FISHING REPORT

By Neville Merritt, Southsea Marina Angling Club After weeks of challenging fishing, April was like turning on a switch, with many boats reporting exceptionally good catches.

We had some good spells of weather for a change enabling the boats to get out, although some of the very calm days also came with thick fog which wasn’t helpful.

Nevertheless we have, at last, some good fishing to report.

Plaice are the target inshore species during March and April, and they have been very obliging for those boats that found the all-important shellfish patches that hold the fish. Best method is casting out from the boat and allowing the rig to roll slowly down-tide, covering ground and creating movement. You will notice from the photos that some serious bling is required.

These are known as WTF rigs. The fish sees some colour in the distance, thinks “WTF”, goes over to investigate and finds a conveniently placed snack. Baits included rag, lug tipped with squid or prawn, and Isome worms in light colours. Fishing has been so hot at times that triple shots were recorded, Heber Crawford’s threesome is pictured along with his son Archie’s first ever plaice. Other pictures were supplied

by John Evans fishing from Boxerfish, 11 plaice to 2lb 13oz and Derek Norman with Brian Dale and Ken Saunders fishing from Blue with 25 plaice best weight 3lb. These early fish are thin having recently spawned.

Bill Arnold’s fish weighed 2lb 10oz although from the dimensions you might have expected closer to 4lb.

The Langstone Harbour Fishermen’s Association ran their Plaice Competition 14-15 April. The winners were based on heaviest fish caught rather than bags, so smaller fish could be returned. The winner was Terry Greaves with 1lb 15oz fishing

aboard Limpet, and second place went to Terry Edgerton with a plaice of 1lb 10oz.

Plenty of herring have been shoaling and anglers are now targeting these very successfully. They make great eating, a good bait and can be fun to catch on light tackle. Small Sabiki rigs size 6 hooks and smaller work well. The trick is to hold the lures stationary at the depth the fish are shoaling, unlike mackerel lures which rely on movement.

Further out on the wrecks the target fish is pollack. Some good fish have been caught and gave great sport. The only downside is the distance travelled, many of the wrecks lie over 30 miles from Langstone which makes a long day – but worth it if you find the fish.

Heber Crawford, 2017 SMAC Species Champion demonstrated that anything is possible. Using LRF tactics he caught a Butterfish, slightly salted of course, while at Anchor using bread. We thought this was jammy but he was Utterly delighted.

Smoothhounds will be around from now on and the first have already been caught.

A few bream have been reported caught in nets and will be another inshore target species over rocky marks and broken ground soon. I expect we will have some photographs of these next month.

Spring sees the migration of birds over the Channel to Great Britain, and it is very common to have one arrive unexpectedly on the boat. It is remarkable that such a small creature can fly across miles of sea, settle with a few feet of people, rest for a while then head on – and in the right direction. If fishing is quiet, take a bird identification book with you. This example from Heber is a Chiffchaff.

ANGLESEY - READERS REPORT

Following on from our success a few weeks ago and with light winds forecast, Dylan and I headed back to the rock marks of Anglesey for the evening.

A morning of heavy rain had left everywhere saturated and the rocks of our chosen spot very slippery. But as we began setting up the sky brightened and the sun slowly appeared.

Despite the lack of waves the conditions were far from calm with the remainder of a large swell from the previous day, and for the first few hours fishing was very slow with just a few Dogfish showing an interest.

But as the daylight wained, so did the swell and steadily the bites increased.

A small but perfectly formed predatory Huss of around 3lb for Dylan signalled the start of a feeding spell and I found it's twin 20 minutes later.

A good pull down resulted in a small Thornback Ray for me before Dylan shouted that he was in and after a good tussle, added to the tally with a lovely Huss of just under the double at 9lb 13oz.

I managed another couple of smaller Thornies over the next hour before a cracking run produced a nice female of 7lb and no sooner had I returned her, my other rod registered a few big angry nods. As I held the rod, it slowly pulled over.. another nice fish on! Moments later another lovely Huss of just under 9lb graces the rocks.

By now the evening had turned into a beautifully clear starry night.. the fish were on the hunt and we were loving it!

Without even realising, a few more Dogs between us and a fifth and sixth Thornback for me, took us through into the early hours, and just as I was contemplating the time to retire I had another registration on my left hand rod which at first resembled another pesky Dogfish. Watching it develop, the line suddenly dropped almost to the rocks!! Quickly winding in all the slack line I "feel" for the fish and after two long taps I lean in... I feel a fish on but as I reel it comes in easily and as it nears our feet and I'm thinking "Doggie" it suddenly wakes

up and dives!

I know now this is a very good fish as it stays deep and takes from the drag twice... gingerly I ease it to the surface where my wingman awaits to land it. Dylan is now between the fish and myself and as it surfaces he screams "oh my god it's massive!" I can't see it so naturally think double figure Thornie, but as I step sideways and look past him ... there lying in the tide is a stunning Blonde Ray! But all is not done, almost giving me a cardiac she flaps those big wings and kites right and dives a third time! I'm praying I don't lose her and I tease her back up again.. this time I guide her into the now rebuilding swell and expertly Dylan uses the wave action to drop her on a small ledge below where he fast as lightning picks up her up with a big groan!

She's ours! Screams of delight, laughter and hugs .. pure elation!

by Bristol Channel standards she's no monster but in North Wales and at 15lb 2oz she's as rare as hens teeth and a fish I've searched for many times. Although she's not my PB, putting her back and watching her gracefully swim away is equally as special as my biggest from the Channel.

And as I sat and watched the tips for my final cast I just couldn't wait to do the write up and tell you all about it.. if there's a cloud up above number 9 you'll find me on that one today!

Burnham on Sea

At last spring has sprung, temperatures have been slowly rising and even the wind is giving us the odd break to get out. The summer fish are moving in lower down the channel and over the next few weeks we should see the first hounds showing in the bay. As I write this temperatures are just starting to drop again but hopefully this will be short lived and we can look forward to blue skies and light winds.

March 25th Four Buoys with a crew of 4 made it out for a short one over high.

Fishing was very busy with an incredible 52 thornies caught but nothing over 7lb, the seabed must have been carpeted with them as nothing else had a look in.

April 8th and Four Buoys was out again for another short one over high water with just a crew of 2. There rays weren't as plentiful as before but it did give the conger and dogs a chance to add a bit of variety. On the same day Nigel Devey and Andy Georgiou towed Ultra White down to Weymouth for their first away day of the year. They found a few small turbot and dogs on the shambles and Nigel had a nice undulate of 14lbs. A move for plaice worked out ok with the best going 4lb again to Nigel.

April 14th and a few of us had a charter on Valkyrie 7 from Hayling Island 40 miles out in the English channel drifting for pollack.

It was fairly slow in the morning but picked up in the afternoon and we all had a few fillets to take home. Nothing massive with fish to about 12lbs but good sport on balanced tackle.

Four Buoys made it out again for another short one on the 21st. Just 2 on board again, we started off at Lilstock hoping for a late cod. Sport was steady with rays, dogs

and conger but at slack water we made a move to a bank for the start of the ebb tide.

It turned out to be a good move as within 5 minutes of setting the anchor Stephen Saxby had something different that was swimming across the tide and staying a bit deeper. I grabbed the net just as the first bass of the year popped out of the murky water. At 3lb 10oz it was a welcome sight even though it had to be released.

On Friday 20th we held our presentation evening at the sailing club. Top man for the year was undoubtedly Andy Georgiou collecting 8 trophies including the Mustad Trophy for the most points over the year, the Labbe cup for the most species and the Best Overall Specimen with a conger of 33lb 51/2oz. Nigel Devey was runner up for the Mustad Trophy and his boat Ultra White won the Porthcawl trophy for the most points for the year. to the west of Porlock Bay are starting to produce pollack though recent spring tides have coloured the water making fishing with artificial lures impossible. The next neaps will I'm sure produce much better results. Surprisingly, on or two decent cod have also featured in charter catches with a couple pushing the scales into double figures. It would be great to have a good spring run to make up for the appalling winter one! As usual, if you get cancelled on the South coast with strong southerly winds, give us a last minute call, we could possibly get you out!

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT

Finally after what feels like the longest winter forever. Things are turning around.

The past month has seen the general fishing pick up considerably. It wasn’t really that that bad before. More the lack of fish being caught down to the lack of rod hours being put in, But here we are at the back end of April and it’s looking more familiar.

The thornback rays have started to move back in closer to the shore after the cold water had pushed them out into deeper water or they were just hibernating because it was so cold. There has been some great catches reported with a good few well in to double figures. Steve Parsons bagging a fine one of exactly 13lb and other multiple catches of up to 9 rays by other anglers.

There are plenty of small codling featuring in catches throughout the channel. This is very encouraging for the coming winter.

These codling being mainly about 10-12oz will use the channel as a nursery all summer and gorge of the rich pickings and pack on some weight quickly. They may only be 1-1.5lb by autumn, but many anglers love catching them by the handful.

There still a modest amount of fat plump 3-5lb codling present in the channel and these will continue to feature in catches throughout the next month especially with anglers targeting the Smoothounds.

As I knock up this months report the first reports of the hounds from the shore around

Minehead have leaked out . Every year the first catches are kept a little quite by the angler/anglers and that’s understandable to protect the location for as long as possible before the hot spots get potentially packed out . This is only normally for a couple of weeks until the sporty Smoothound start surprising un suspecting anglers and everyone sees it.

As the hounds numbers start to increase off the shore by mid to late May . The demand for fresh peeler crab at all our local tackle shop throughout the Bristol Channel goes through the roof. It’s a good idea to get them while you can and freeze a few dozen down for the occasions when they are scarce.

Bass numbers are increasing with the smaller 1-2lbers making more of an appearance in catches along with the bonus 5lb plus fish.

The bull Huss is also a realistic target species all year round theses days with west of Minehead being the best area to give attention too. A good few specimens to over 13lb have been reported recently with a good few fish around the 8-10lb showing.

Anyway I hope the month ahead treats you to some good fishing and with the hound season upon us things are looking great.

Port Report Aah…the jubilation amongst the Weymouth charter skippers is apparent.

Bunting and balloons adorn the now active vessels, wild music and festivities welcome the crews to Weymouth, everyone is breathing a collective sigh of relief and the Bank Managers are rubbing their hands together again…. yes, the weather has allowed the fleet to go to sea…at last!!!

It has been, in the words of Groundhog Day, a ‘winter that is never going to end’ but now there are signs that the Groundhog can no longer see its own shadow and things are on the up! The days are longer, the rain is warmer, the cloud covering is a bit higher and less dense and the winds have been light enough for a sustained 2018 record breaking run of 8 days in a row for some of the boats.

And, most importantly, there have been some fish.

The pollacking out on the wrecks has been very good on some of these days but, as expected, when the tides eased the fishing became harder. The neap tides produced mixed fortunes with some boats struggling but others doing OK…it all depends on which wreck was chosen and if the fish decided to feed when the anglers arrived. Very good news is that a few cod have been caught and also a number of ling…..so it all looks very promising for May. The inshore fishing has been great.

The best news of all is that quite a few plaice to 4lb have been caught. We are all hoping that the plaice are making a return after their disappearing act after those horrendous winter storms 4 years ago. We know ports to the west and particularly to the east have continued to enjoy good plaice fishing whilst Weymouth has suffered badly from their demise….so here’s hoping that these catches are signs of a very welcome plaice revival.

There’s been plenty of different species caught with the ‘big fish’ fishing being very productive. Blonde and undulate rays have featured along with a sprinkling of spotted, small-eyed and thornbacks. The Shambles Bank has shown promise with turbot to 14lb and some very unexpected brill to 8lb.

Anchoring sessions on the Shambles have provided some very pleasant days with dogfish, smoothounds and tope adding to the variety throughout April.

This good fishing, combined with calm seas has put smiles back on everyone’s faces…..although it would be nice if it were to be a tad warmer and the rain and mist were to leave us alone now.

May, we hope, will be a great month.

In an ideal May, which we did not experience last year, cod will move onto the wrecks and such will be their numbers that the pollack will be outnumbered (we hope!!). There will be a few more ling about.

Inshore, bream should feature from marks along the Northern Shoreline to the east of Weymouth and along the edges of the Lulworth Banks. There will be wrasse, dogfish, gurnard and undulate rays plus the chance of a pollack and early season mackerel from the reefs close in to the Northern Shore, particularly in the Warbarrow area, with tope, smoothhounds and spurdogs adding to these species further offshore along with the various different rays which we have been enjoying for the last few years.

It will be very interesting to see what happens as regards the plaice…if they have or are moving in, they will give a massive boost to the inshore fleet as plaice are such a popular species to try for and many anglers enjoy fishing for them.

The first Alderney runs have taken place but reports are that the banks over there were quiet in April. The water was described as gin clear, which is very different from the visibility in Weymouth Bay. I know we are always looking for reasons why we don’t catch but gin clear water is not good for flatties. When the plaice fishing was at its peak a few years back, we experienced some unusually clear conditions and could see the bottom of the Shambles Bank very clearly. The plaice could be seen but simply would not take the baits.

In May the water around the Islands does cloud up with plankton and that does tend to lead to an improvement in the turbot and brill fishing. Catches on the wrecks on the way to Alderney in April produced pollack mainly with an occasional cod but May should see more cod featuring.

So, it has been very good to see the cheerful trip reports from the various boats on the social media and going on the amount of ‘likes’ the photo’s are receiving and relieved comments anglers are expressing, we have hopefully ‘turned the corner’ of a long, lean spell and the Groundhog shadow will now disappear completely until next winter.

A big Thank you is to be expressed to the heroes that have supported the Weymouth Fleet throughout this ordeal called ‘winter’ and is very much appreciated. It is now time for everyone to be rewarded for this lengthy period of suffering……let’s hope for a good season from now on!!

ANGLING TRUST TEAMS UP WITH SCIENTISTS STUDYING RETURN OF BLUEFIN TUNA TO UK WATERS

The Angling Trust is supporting a two-year scientific study to confirm the return of Atlantic bluefin tuna in British waters and investigate their movements.

The Thunnus UK Project is being carried out by the University of Exeter and the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) and will use state-of-theart tracking devices to improve knowledge of the species and help secure its future around the UK. Atlantic bluefin tuna are amongst the biggest, fastest and most valuable fish in the sea and were once a common sight in UK waters, ranging throughout the Celtic and North Sea. However, they largely disappeared from British waters in the 1990s, possibly due to overfishing, and are now recognised as an endangered species.

In recent years they have been observed more frequently in UK coastal waters, particularly during the late summer, autumn and winter as they move into coastal areas to feed on energy rich fish such as sprats and herring.

The research team will be supported by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund, and scientists will work with stakeholders including commercial fishers, recreational anglers, wildlife watchers and NGOs to share knowledge and to deploy around 40 satellite tracking devices.

The Angling Trust has been pushing the government to begin a tagging project since bluefin tuna started appearing in inshore UK waters three or four year ago when anglers fishing for sharks began to see them and catch them accidentally.

Vast numbers of tuna up to 400kg have been returning to the Baltic Sea where the Angling Trust’s sister organisations in Denmark and Sweden have already completed a successful tagging project in 2017. Anglers have also been tagging tuna successfully with scientists off the west coast of Ireland for a number of years and Norway looks set to begin a tagging project in the near future.

Atlantic bluefin tuna can migrate over huge distances, moving over the entire Atlantic Ocean to North America and back again in a single year, crossing both coastal waters and the deep offshore. However, despite historic evidence, little is known about their movements, how long they stay in British waters and where they go once they leave.

The work will help scientists to understand:

Where and when Atlantic bluefin tuna are found in British waters; Long-distance migrations and where Atlantic bluefin tuna go when they are not in UK coastal waters; Where Atlantic bluefin tuna found in UK waters go to breed; and Interactions between Atlantic bluefin tuna and both commercial and recreational fisheries.

The information will improve knowledge of the species, ultimately aiding in their future conservation.

Dr David Righton, lead scientist on the project for Cefas, said: “This exciting collaboration will enable us to gather and share knowledge of this incredible species, and uncover the role they play in UK waters.

Cefas has a long history of investigating the behaviours and migrations of many species of fish, and we’re looking forward to using our expertise to address some of the fundamentally important questions that need answering about bluefin tuna."

Dr Matthew Witt, lead scientist on the project for the University of Exeter, said: “This a ground-breaking project for the UK and another important step towards the use of evidence-based approaches for marine conservation.

“These are huge, exciting top predators, yet with an uncertain future. We are incredibly excited to be able to work on these fish, which I suspect to many conjure thoughts of tropical warm waters, yet they are here in our coastal sea.”

David Mitchell, Angling Trust’s Head of Marine, said: “The return of bluefin tuna to UK waters has generated huge excitement amongst UK sea anglers. Tunny, as they were known, were once a top target for anglers fishing in the South West and the North Sea before they disappeared. The Angling Trust is very excited about helping the sea angling community become involved in this research project.

"Looking into the future, the Angling Trust can see the potential opportunity for a legitimate recreational bluefin tuna fishery to work alongside further scientific research and conservation. As well as helping to advance science, this would bring huge economic and employment benefits to many coastal communities.

“We would like to remind anglers that bluefin tuna are currently protected and should not be targeted. Any caught accidentally should be released unharmed as soon as possible and not brought onboard the boat.”

Fishing was very poor throughout the evening with only 10 of the 24 fishing weighing in 13 fish for 2k 285gms. Species were 10 Pout, 1 Eel, 1 Dogfish & 1 Smoothound with the best fish being a nice Dogfish of 980gms caught by Martin Neale. We did wonder whether the inshore trawlers had been through during the week.

LILY BATE OF PADSTOW WINS CORNISH SEA ANGLING AWARD

This year has been a particularly proud time for sea angler Patrick Bate of Padstow, Cornwall.

His daughter Lily has been 'Crowned' the Cornwall Federation of Sea Anglers under 11 yrs of age Sea Angling Champion of Cornwall at the annual CFSA Award ceremony held on 21at April 2018 at St Dennis Working Mens Club.

Lily had a superb year catching some excellent fish and setting a new u-11 record with a flounder of 3lb 1oz, a record which had preciously stood since 1997.

She showed real skill and tenacity with the fishing rod often catching more and bigger fish than her dad.

Lily and her dad started fishing in May of last year, targeting mullet in around the quay at Padstow, Patrick had seen some nice fish swimming around and knew that Lily was keen to catch one so one Saturday afternoon they headed and tucked themselves away between two boats and hoped for the best.

Literally 5 minutes after their arrival Lily was into a fish.... A big fish!, with the rod bent double. after a few heart in mouth moments Patrick managed to net the fish for her.. An absolute cracking mullet of 4lb 1oz. They weighed the fish in at the Padstow fishing clubs scales at the harbour and quickly returned it. The fish swam off none the worse for the experience.

After such a good start to her fishing year she was keen to get out and keep fishing, she had some success catching a few nice bass and other bits and pieces although nothing in the same league as the mullet...

Her dad knew that if Lily could catch 4 good sized fish she would be in with a good chance of doing well within the Cornish Federation of Sea Anglers. Something she was keen to do so as the end of the summer drew near.

Lily, her mum and dad all headed off down to Padstow quay one evening armed with more bait and fishing rods than one family could possibly need, Lily lobbed her float out maybe 15 yards and sat patiently waiting for a bite, a (she didn't have to wait long) when Lily stood up on the quay playing a fish. 'Fish on dad' she shouted, 'it's not very big though'.. A garfish,she was made up with catching one of those odd looking creatures. It was returned. Lily put a bit of mackerel flesh on her hook and she lobbed the float out again.. A while went

past and Lily was into another fish, a better fish, and so it was, a scad of 14oz, which in the scad world is a very respectable size and more importantly one to weigh in at the fishing club... Now Lily had two good fish weighed In. Patrick and Lily kept scouring the. C. F. S. A. Website to see how the other youngsters around Cornwall were getting on and it appeared that Lily was right up there in the top three in Cornwall.

With it coming towards the end of the year Patrick knew that two big fish could see her win so a trip to Newquay headland to try and catch a dogfish was in order, luckily Newquay headland is quite a safe venue for kids to fish, some nice level platforms and you don't need to cast far to be in with a good chance of catching. Patrick and Lily fished there into dark with Lily casting out and winding in dog fish after dogfish which wasnt easy work for Lily. Unfortunately none were big enough to meet the minimum weight requirement to be able to put on the club scales.. Just as all hope of catching a big one was fading she caught one of 2lb 2oz.. A weighable fish.. They headed home to Padstow and back to the club and scales at headquarters of Padstow Angling Club the Golden Lion public house. The fish was carefully weighed and recorded Now the pressure was really on Lily. With a month left Lily had to catch one monster fish. It was very close in the under 11 league with some little lads from other clubs catching some superb fish too.

The only option left was flounder. The weather in December was very wet and windy and Lily and her dad couldn't get out fishing. Finally a break in the weather came in between Christmas and the New year...

Thus was her one and only chance.

This final session of the year proved to be a real 'red letter day', on her first cast Lily had a flounder of 1lb. Later she was Into a much bigger flounder that knocked the scales around to 2lb 7 oz a real cracker!! , half an hour later she was Into an absolute stonking fish and, rod bent double, line peeling off her reel her dad knew that 'this was one", Lily skilfully played the fish, tiring it enough for her dad to net it, he couldn't believe the size of it!, by far the biggest flounder he had ever seen and at 3lb 1oz a new under 11yrs Cornish record.

NWASAC Match report- 3rd round of NWASAC Personal Members Championship 2018, Sun 15th April 2018, Crosby, Merseyside (24 rods) The brick beach at Crosby at the mouth of the Mersey Estuary, fished reasonably well despite the south easterly wind; most anglers caught.

All the fish caught (except for a solitary whiting) were flounders, mostly caught on worm baits.

Neil Cutler made the trip over the Pennines worthwhile with a win from the seaward Zone B with a bag of eight flounders for 269 points while John Waugh was runner-up from Zone A with similar bag of eight fish for 203 points.

Alex Campbell's last cast flounder of 740 gms was very welcome as it was his only fish and earned him the flatfish pool. Fears that there would only be flatfish recorded in the match were dispelled when Steve Trish located a whiting in the closing stages.

Young Daniel Parker scored enough points to take the championship lead.

peg 04 . Ben had 2 rockling, 7 pout and a whiting with 15 topups, Nick had 7 sizeable and 14 topups. Third place was Riley Price from Bournemouth peg 05 with 4 sizeable and 5 topups for 2lb 2oz12dr. Penn points on weight will be awarded to Ben Arnold, Nick Hayter and Riley Price . Heaviest round was Dave Lanes 13oz Eel and there was no heaviest flat. Zone Winners picked up £100, nominated fish pool winners with pout John Davis with 27cm.

The SLO had it’s third competition at Highcliffe on Saturday the 17th of March 2018 from 6pm until 11pm Sponsored by Christchurch angling. 74 anglers fished in 4 zones with 71 anglers weighing in. The sizeable fish consisted of 92 Rockling, 37 Pouting, 1 Eel and 45 Whiting. The heaviest fish brought back to the scales was a plaice of 2lb 3.2oz caught by Robert Miness. The best specimen was a pouting of 1lb 14.2oz (62.5% of specimen) caught by Adrian Moody.

Gary Loveless from Three Counties SAA was top with a small eyed ray of 52cm for a total of 2kg 599g; runner up was James Madsen with 1kg 576g and third was Dave Lane with 1kg 361g.

On Sunday 25th March Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a Shallow Boat Competition.

There were some very pleased faces as this was the first competition since last November owing to bad weather conditions causing many cancellations.

6 club members fished the competition on a dry, cold, cloudy day with light winds.

Fish caught consisted of plaice, dogfish, pouting and blonde ray.

the pontoon in Bath Road and headed for the Shingle Bank 1 mile off Milford-on-Sea. This recreational fishing trip was just a trip for new members, some of whom had not fished before, and some who just wanted to improve their fishing skills.

The plan was to fish on the Shingles for plaice and the weather played it’s part with sunshine and a very light north easterly wind. Ben dropped anchor on one of his marks, a nice sandy spot.

The first fish caught was a nice thornback ray weighing 8lb 8oz by Paul IbbersonGroves on ragworm and squid. It wasn’t long before Paul’s rod bent again. This time a couple of plaice were caught the biggest weighing 2lb. Other catches of plaice followed. These included Brian Rose, whose best plaice weighed 1lb 10oz, Roy Eaton’s weighing 1lb 5oz and Robin Lane’s weighing 1lb 6oz. There were 15 plaice caught in total. Other species which were caught included Cliff Williams a pouting of 1lb 10oz, Robin Lane a spotted ray 3lb 3oz and some small smoothhounds.

Thanks goes to Ben for a good days fishing and keeping us all supplied with tea and coffee.

Only edible fish were retained. All other fish were released.

The flatfish pool was won by James Madsen with a plaice of 876g and the round fish pool was won by Gary Loveless with a small eyed ray of 2kg 599g.

West Bay SAC’s Chesil Champs On Sunday 25th March, seventy five anglers signed on for the 46th Chesil Champs hosted by West Bay Sea Angling Club and sponsored by The Angling Centre West Bay. The competition was fished along Chesil Beach from Burton Bradstock to Dragon’s Teeth, Abbotsbury. It also included the East pier at West Bay to accommodate those less able to fish the beaches. After six hours of fishing twenty anglers had managed to catch weighable fish, species caught were; plaice, whiting, ray, dab, pout, dogfish & rockling.

All those that came back to the presentation and did not manage to weigh fish in were entered into the no fish draw.

Top ten places were as follows: 1st, Gary Loveless, (2kg 599g); 2nd, James Madsen, (1kg 576g); 3rd, Dave Lane, (1kg 361g); 4th, Julian Shambrook, (1kg 342g); 5th, Daniel Crump, (1kg 207g); 6th, Adam Cullingford, (1kg 198g); 7th, Rick Dorgan, (872g); 8th, Chris Equall, (782g); 9th, Rob Marshall, 682g; 10th, Dave Hatcher, 425g.

On Wednesday 11th April Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a recreational boat trip out of Lymington aboard “Rebecca May” skippered by Ben Matthews from the Isle of Wight.

Shingle Bank League Competition 27th March On Tuesday evening of the 27th March Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a Shingle Bank League competition. The weather was dry with a south/west wind, and the water very dirty. 13 club members signed on and only 4 weighed in fish, which consisted of pouting and rockling.

Four fish were caught for a total weight of 10.8oz. The best fish of the competition was a pouting of 0-3.8oz caught by Gavin Sloper.

Results: 1st Gavin Sloper 1 fish for 0-3.8oz 2nd Ollie Hopkins 1 fish for 0-2.8oz, 3rd Chris Ellis 1 fish for 0-2.6oz 4th Keith Panks 1 fish for 0-1.6oz.
