There’s nothing more we enjoy here at the Sea Angling News than hearing about record breaking fish being caught from the shore here in the UK. Well this month we can tell you about a true monster that has been landed in Wales. Ryan Wingfield who is no stranger to landing specimen fish has caught a potential welsh record tope from a welsh shore mark.

The current record is 63lb and with Ryan’s fish tipping the scales at 64lb 8oz he’s sure to have it in the bag. Congratulations Ryan from all of us here at the SAN.

As match day one arrived, the Men’s teams were to fish Aberach, an area that had been lightly fished during practice and expectations were high. As the day unfolded it was apparent there were a number of hotspots producing wrasse in good numbers, unfortunately for England none of the team were drawn to fish the pegs however results were encouraging and the team made up for a lack of wrasse by catching good numbers of bream.

The 2017 SALC Home Nations Shore Angling Championships for Men’s, Ladies, Youth and Junior was held in Pwllheli, Wales from the 4th-9th July, 2017. Team England competed in the Men’s, Ladies and Youth categories and their performances were rewarded with team silver, bronze and bronze in those respective categories. The gold medals were spread between Scotland and Ireland in the Men’s and Ladies categories respectively while Wales dominated the Youth and Junior competitions winning gold medals in each category.

Day two was altogether different with the teams fishing Pwllheli Beach. Anglers were met with crystal clear and flat calm water and practice sessions in these conditions had been challenging - and this proved to be the case as the results arrived. Only seven anglers weighed in at the end of the day and it was Scotland who came from third place on day one to win the gold medal, pipping England to the post by two points. England’s Ian Bowell finished first in his zone while Andy Gallagher finished second in his zone while Bill Linfield, Toby Oldfield and Ian Dancey did not register a fish.

Team Manager Richard Yates commented: “The team all worked very hard and the team spirit was one of the best I've experienced and I thank them for their efforts. It was a very good event which we very nearly won with an excellent team. Our thanks also go to the organising committee for hosting the event.”

and were drawn to fish two beaches on following days. On day one Pwllheli Beach was their venue with Aberach beach for day two. Both of these beaches were sandy with patches of eel grass where the team were hoping the wrasse were to be found. The information was that wrasse would be the main target with perhaps small bass and garfish The practice days went well with all members looking for the best rig combinations but it was noticeable that the fish were conspicuous by the absence, possibly due to the weather conditions which were flat calm, gin clear water and hot sun.

Day one of the Ladies match was held on Pwllheli and as the men found out on day two of their match, it proved to be a challenging match for the team however Rebecca Adams won her zone with small wrasse, Heather Linfield finished second while Nikki Frewin and Kimberley Lawn did not weigh and England finished day one joint third with Scotland on 8 points.

Day two on Aberach beach it was all to play for, the team were five points away from silver and seven points away from gold. The team enjoyed a better day with Kimberley Lawn winning her zone and Heather Linfield recorded consecutive second place in her zone, a third place and a did not weigh meant England finished with 22 points and the bronze medal.

Mark Hurcombe led Team England Youth on their quest for a fourth gold medal in four years however it was not be as the team finished in third place taking the bronze medal. England’s team was made up of captain Thomas Wartnaby, Adam Howard, Ryan Wall, Jack Cairns and Tony Williams.

The Youth championships was contested on Pwllheli beach on both days, conditions made for a difficult match and England struggled on day one. However a variety of species were caught such as bass, bream, gurnard, dab, mackerel and dragonet. Host nation Wales, under the guidance of Ben Price, were excellent throughout scoring 17 each day and securing gold with a total of 34 points.

Summer fishing is now well and truly under way with plenty of nice hounds coming to the net not massive fish but good fighting medium fish great fun on light tackle hermits a must for bait.

I don’t know about any other charter boats in our area but we on Sophie Lea are catching some really nice bass and plenty of them mostly to worm baits but they are taking dead baits too.

Tope fishing once again with only a few trips done has been a flop with nil big fish to report and I am beginning to think it may be due to the mass of wind farm cables on the sea bed with resulting electrical currents flowing through them, before these were erected we would have had numerous doubles to report, one wonders what other problems these cables are having on fish migration, let’s face it there has been no studies on the affects this has on species like

sharks that are very finely tuned to hunt prey with receptors under their noses, I aint no scientist but I do know what’s going on out there and big changes have happened since erection of these windmills.

Still plenty of rays to be had if you’re not sick of the site of em !!!! plenty of smaller fish but the big ones seem to have moved away. Lots of mackerel about but they seem to be in deep water now rather than on the sand banks and everyone want to catch them and of course they are great on the bbq.

Gulls working every wear on big shoals of tiny school bass but to be honest getting the feathers over on them is not the way to go as many fish get damaged by being foul hooked and besides they are way too small to keep and best left alone until they pack a few pounds on and its not really bass fishing is it.

The Species League was formed in 2002 when a small group of friends decided to organise a species hunt, once a month on a Friday. Since then the group has grown and now has a keen membership of 30 with over 800 followers on Facebook.

The League holds twelve events per year made up of ten trips out of Beer, Lyme Regis, Weymouth, Poole, Langstone and Minehead and then a final weekend session that this year will be out of Penzance.

The fishing is varied, often using 4 or 5 different fishing techniques per trip and takes in most species, from rays, congers and tope, down to the mini-species and everything in between. Occasionally a trip will target one specific species, such as an evening trip for sole. The League has a two-hook rule and bait packs are supplied by local tackle shops in an attempt to keep the cost down.

The main aim of the League, other than catching as many different species as possible, is to have fun. A fish of a few centimetres can bring just as big a grin to an anglers face as a two metre one can.

The first competition of 2017 took place on the 17th of February, when 27 keen anglers set out from Weymouth in ideal conditions aboard Meerkat, Wild Frontier and RW2. Fish caught included Spurdogs, Congers, Huss, Thornback, Spotted and Undulate rays, Pout and Dogfish. Congratulations go to Perry Dack who came top overall and to the other two boat winners, Vernon Allen and Billy Short.

The next League event is on Friday 31st of March out of Lyme Regis with 3 boatful’s of anglers targeting Huss, Pollack and Whiting, with the chance of an early Plaice or two.

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE

I always said when I first signed-up to do these reports almost 2 years ago now that I would be honest and tell it like it is because that’s what anglers want to know and I have to say that the majority of the fishing so far this summer has been total pants!

One of the biggest concerns so far this year has been the lack of mackerel showing from the usual shore venues and I do hope that they start to show in greater numbers shortly. Just recently I made a short evening trip up to Berry Head on a Friday evening to get a few macks for the freezer and the fact that I was just 1 of 3 anglers there told me all I needed to know and needless to say the bait freezer is still empty! Going forward I hope this is just a blip and the mackerel shoals (which all of our fishing is dependent on) start to make a recovery.

The one fish that seems to be dominating the catch reports are the smoothhounds, especially for those making the journey up the fish the low water reefs of Kilve and Lilstock on the Bristol Channel. Grahame Tippett of Castaways SAC has certainly put in a lot of effort for the hounds this year and was rewarded with a cracking starry of 17-10 which is a new Castaways SAC club record and PB. Nice one Grahame, plenty of lost leads for that one I’m sure!

It’s starting to get close to the time when the ray fishing from the South Devon shoreline kicks-off and

Dave Downs from Castaways SAC landed a cracking Blonde of 18-6 which was a new C&R club record for his club whilst fellow shore legend Jack Hillon landed a nice SE of 11-4. Also congratulations to Jack on his big spur of 17-7 being confirmed as a new British Record. Nice one mate.

On the boats Malc Jones of Sea Angler 2 tells me that the conger fishing is good on the wrecks with large numbers of eels being boated and that the first blue shark trip of the season produced 11 fish up to a very good size which bodes well for the rest of the season.

The reefs also continue to fish well with Pollack up to 15lb on live launce.

Over on Size Matters Kev McKie also confirmed how good the recent eel fishing has been over the wrecks, with congers up to 90lb being landed and hopes for a ‘ton-up’ eel this season. One thing that has been hampering the bait fishing is the inconsistent mackerel fishing, with shoals there one day and gone the next.

On a recent trip back from Guernsey anglers on-board Size Matters found some nice Cod to 16lb along with ling to 28lb, Pollack to double figures and some John Dory. Shark fishing has also started well for Kev with blues up to 105lb.

Just use a grip lead to stop any movement, also please don’t strike any bites from Sole as they can be seen giving you amazing bites, without actually having the hooks due to the weird mouth formation, So wait until you get slack lined or you are 100% sure they are hooked.

Lots of locals use braided snoods and hook lengths to avoid losing multiple hooks. When we are able to keep a bait in the water the fishing has been rather slow, the shallow marks along Cogden and West Bexi have seen small amounts of Plaice compared to recent years.

David was sponsored to catch as many species as he could in the week and managed 10 species !! Many people sponsored him both anglers and passers by which resulted in David raising over £600 for the charity that week. Well Done !!

ANGLERS DEN SPECIMEN HUNT The specimen hunt was fished from Sunday 9th July until Sunday 16th July with 27 anglers trying to catch the biggest fish in 7 named categories. The bass was won by Jason Anderson with a sizable fish of 1lb 9 ½ oz. The pout was 8 ¾ oz for Peter Cornwall. The silver was shared between Ian Hopper and Danny May with 14 ½ oz. Dab/Plaice was won by Peter Cornwall with a plaice of 13oz. Sole won by David Tame with 1lb 14oz. Smoothound/ Ray won by Tony Kirrage with a hound of 8lb 2 ½ oz(392pts) and best any other species also won by Tony Kirrage with a black bream of 1lb ½ oz (74%).

Fishing was hard with plenty of blanks, despite fishing catch and release to 18cm size limits. With one round to go the leaders are 1st Anglers Den with 98pts. 2nd Anderida Aces 65 pts. 3rd Railway Club 64pts. 4th Team Franks and Tonys Tackle team Sonik with 63pts. 6th The Smugglers 59pts. 7th Twitchy Tips 59pts. 8th Tonys Tackle Team Sonik 49pts and 9th Railway A 48pts.

EASTBOURNE NOMADS The first round of the species cup was fished on Thursday 25th May with 18 anglers fishing at Langney Point. There was a three way tie on 22 points so the winner with the heaviest weight was J.Sporanson, second P. Elstone and thirds T. Kiragge. The heaviest flat was a sole for P. Elstone of 9 ½ oz and the heaviest round a smoothound of 7lb 12 ½ oz for Wesley Sargeant.

On Monday 5th June The second round of the species cup was fished at Langney Point with 14 anglers fishing a catch and release match. The winner with 43 points was Tony Kirrage with a smoothound pout and sole. Second Gerald Sargeant with 38 points and third Arran Aghilli with 21 points. Heaviest round was a smoothound of 2lb 7 ½ oz for Arran Aghilli and heaviest flat a sole of 9oz for Tony Kirrage.

On Monday 19th June the species match was won

by Ian Hopper with 2 species for 22 points. Second

was Arran Aghilli with 16 points and third Deckland Moulding also with 16 points and a smaller weight.

The heaviest round was a Gurnard of 6 ½ oz for Ian Hopper and the heaviest flat a sole of 11oz for Arran Aghilli.

On Friday 23rd June the match was again won by Ian Hopper with 50 points and 3 species. Sole, eel and Smoothound. Second was Dan Wood with 3species for 38 points and third Paul Parsons also with 3 species and 38 points . The heaviest round was a smoothound of 5lb 15oz for Ian Hopper and also the heaviest flat a sole of 15oz for Ian. Mon 10th July was fished as a catch and release points cup with Wesley Sargeant winning with 193 points.

Second was Paul Parsons with 188 points and third was Gerald Sargeant with 170 points. Heaviest flat was a sole of 1lb 6 ½ oz for Steve Frost worth 100 points and the heaviest round a bass worth 56 points for Wesley Sargeant.

ANDERIDA FISHING CLUB On Thurs 22nd June the 12th match in the series was fished in Pevensey Bay, with 20 anglers fishing. The winner was Trevor Rooney with 2 sole and an eel for 2lb 1oz. Second was Geoff Rooney with 1lb 11oz and third Jim Whippy with 1lb 10oz. The heaviest flat was a sole of 1lb 4 ½ oz for Trevor Rooney and the heaviest round an eel of 13oz for Andy James.

The 13th match proved hard fishing with only 5 anglers catching fish. The winner with 3 fish for 1lb 11oz was Les Glazzard. Second Andy James with 15 ½ oz and third Colin Findley with 15 ¼ oz. The heaviest round was an eel of 15 ½ oz for Andy James and the heaviest flat a sole of 8 ¼ oz for Colin Findley.

On Thursday 20th July The winner was Colin Everest with 2 sole and an ell for 1lb 13oz. Second was Trevor Rooney with 1lb 11oz and third Jim Whippy with 1lb 2 ½ oz. The heaviest round was an eel of 14 ½ oz for Ian Hopper and the heaviest flat a sole of 13 oz for Colin Everest.

PEVENSEY BAY ANGLING CLUB On Sunday 24th June The club held a match and some good size Dover sole were caught! 1st was Paul Parsons with 3lb 9 ½ oz including the biggest fish, a lovely 1lb 15 ½ oz Dover sole. 2nd Terry Taylor with 2lb 7oz and 3rd Tony Kirrage with 2lb 3 ½ oz.

GENERAL Friday 23rd June!! Ryan Smart fished along Eastbourne seafront and caught an excellent 11lb+ Thornback Ray. The ray measured 65cm across the wings and using the pts system comes out about 10 ½ lb, but with find with experience that its usually an underestimate for rays. On the weekend of July 15th Ed Howarth fished at Langney Point with Mackerel head and caught a lovely bass of 8lb 14oz. Denis Errington was fishing at Whitehorses on Thurs 20th July and caught a lovely sole of 1lb 10oz on frozen lug. Joe Plumstead fished along Eastbourne Seafront on Friday night 21st July and caught a nice Smoothhound of 9-10lb using peeler crab. Darren Chapple fished in early July in West Sussex and managed to land a PB shore caught conger eel of 28lb.

SILVER SPRAY REPORT

I’m writing this month’s report from the hotel on Alderney as we couldn’t get out to sea today due to strong north-easterly winds. It seems like the last 2 weeks have all been pretty similar, although we do have more shelter in Poole Bay than most places so we are still able to get out. First trip out to target the bass after the ban was lifted on July 1st was met with some tough conditions with both the tide and the weather not in our favour. We fished for about an hour before the stiff westerly picked up and the tide dropped away, fishing was successful on the lures in that time with plenty of smaller fish taking the tronix lures wound quickly up 10 turns and back down. As usual the bigger fish fell to the guys who stuck with the large live baits. Kelvin Hindmarch’s new PB hit the deck at 9lb

12oz and is still our biggest of the season so far. The cod are thin on the ground out in the channel with the last 2 trips only producing 3 each but we are still getting some good pollock and the ling are starting to show more frequently. We should see the first of the big wreck bream soon on certain wrecks, could this be the year we see another one over 6lb? Back in the sheltered waters of Poole Bay the variety of fish available is amazing with most trips producing at least 15 species. Plaice brill and turbot are coming to the net both at anchor and on the drift. Rays and tope are in abundance now with undulates being the most plentiful. Packs of 20lb+ male tope roam around about 12 miles out and are providing excellent sport when we can get to them.

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins The weather has seen some unseasonal highs and lows ranging from record high temperatures to excess rainfall and lightning storms which has affected the fishing dramatically. Mackeral were being caught in reasonable numbers have become very hard to find and we are having to rely on frozen baits as back up, at this time of year we should be catching enough to put some by for the winter months not draw down on our stocks. The wreck fishing has been very poor this month with a few Pollack being caught and hardly any Cod. Now the Bass ban has been lifted allowing an angler to retain 1 fish per day some very good Bass have been caught, Carl Hurren landed a PB Bass of 10lb 2ozs in the Swash Channel on very light spinning tackle whilst Plaice fishing. Dave Colcough landed a 3lb Common Eel whilst sitting on board Piscary on the mooring waiting for a lift home. Ray fishing has

continued to be excellent and working in conjunction with the Undulate Ray Project we are now seeing repeat landings of the same fish in the same areas.

An angler fishing aboard Andy Adams boat Randon Harvest landed a lovely Blonde ray weighing just over 30lb, on the same day another local angler fishing on-board Adie Ponchards boat Sea Trader landed a Undulate Ray of 15lb. Further inshore and within the Harbour some very good Plaice fishing has been experienced with up to 50 in one session most are on the small side but for one angler from Romsey fishing on board Mistress Linda using a tiny bit of worm as small Bream were devastating the baits landed a Plaice of 4lb. Along the beaches there are lots of small Bream and Gurnards and as a bonus the 1st Trigger fish has been caught by Martin Bailey fishing from his own boat near Durley Chine weighing 3lb.

James Howell from Somerset Shore Angling Club with 3 sole he had from the Bristol Channel last Sunday. The sole were caught in consecutive casts and weighed 1.13, 1.14 and 2.1. All caught on ragworm.

Junior angler Jack Reynolds age 10 caught his first ever starry smooth hound weighing in at 11lb 14oz.

The Fishing 4 Schools (F4S) Derbyshire and Yorkshire team and local chef Ben Atkinson challenged the pupils to a MasterChef style cook off on the first day (6 July) with Year Seven pupils creating dishes including mackerel burgers, a whole baked fish and Thai fish broth.

Chef Ben, who until recently worked at the Spencer Arms in Cawthorne, Barnsley, said: “I started my career in Cornwall so I have a lot of experience cooking fish. It was brilliant how they got stuck in and really enjoyed it – working with fish and vegetables some of them had not even seen before.”

Then it was off to Press Manor Fishery near Matlock, Derbyshire on the Friday for the youngsters to try their hands at fly tying, knots and casting and then angling.

F4S instructor Ben Fox of Huddersfield, who is a member of the Team England Youth Fly Fishing team, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed taking them fishing. At 17 I am not that much older than them and I think they saw my England shirt and were encouraged to ask me questions about how you get into fishing and get good enough to fish for your country.”

Fishing 4 Schools founder and director Charles Jardine said: “This is one of the first events held by the new Yorkshire and Derbyshire F4S group and we are delighted it was at Dearne ALC. I was so impressed by the bright energetic attitudes of the students and the incredible quality of the work produced – it was one of the most enjoyable courses I have been part of in the 10 years of Fishing 4 Schools.”

Tim Poat has set a potential new British Record landing a 15.8-gram connemara clingfish whilst fishing North Devon’s top LRF mark Ilfracombe Pier.

The current British record stands at 10grams and Tim has submitted a claim to the Angling Trust’s record fish committee.

Tim tempted the fish on a small piece of ragworm fished down the side of the wall on a very calm evening as the tide was ebbing. LRF(light rock fishing) has grown in popularity over recent years and offers a whole new perspective to sea angling with the use of ultra light tackle and finesse not traditional associated with sea angling.

Combe Martin SAC members are competing in a species hunt during July and August. At the time of writing this the current leader is John Shapland with a total of 25 species ranging from tompot blennies to tope. Runner up at this point is Daniel Welch with 24 species that includes a rare leopard spotted goby.

Combe Martin SAC member Dan Spearman landed a fine lure caught bass weighing 11lb to set a new personal best. The lure was a Savage Gear 3-D Mullet.

The fish was returned carefully to the water. Dan also lost another large fish during the session. Bass have also being tempted on bait fishing tactics with mackerel, spider crab and squid baits all successful.

Shore fishing has produced some quality smoothound from many marks. Combe Martin SAC’s Fish of the month competition for June was won by Dan Spearman with a smoothound scaling 12lb 14oz.

of 4lb 1oz. James Hunter won Combe Martin SAC’s Summer Rover with a specimen thin lipped grey mullet of 4lb 1oz.

Large numbers of dogfish make fishing after dark hard going with these scavengers often locating baits before any better quality fish get the chance.

Ross Stanway tempted a ballan wrasse of 4lb 14oz when fishing a rock mark. Specimen wrasse have proved elusive over recent seasons.

Boat sport has been excellent off Ilfracombe with mackerel now more plentiful and tope and bass numbers increasing as a result. Charter Boats Reel Deal and Bluefin are both venturing to the shark grounds in the mouth of the Bristol Channel where porbeagle shark hunt the Pollock that frequent the reefs. Large numbers of tope can be caught in this area along with Pollock and black bream.

Cameron Atkinson won Appledore Shipbuilders latest Boat Competition with a fine tope of 35lb 4oz. In runner up spot was Michael Hammett with a tope of 33lb. Third place was taken by Michael Toogood with a bull huss of 10lb 4oz.

Mullet anglers have enjoyed some fine sport spinning with baited spinners for thin-lipped grey mullet in the Taw and Torridge estuaries. Several specimens have been landed above the local specimen weight of 3lb 8oz one of the best reported was a fine fish of 4lb 2oz to the rod of John Shapland.

The last month has again been blowy with only a few opportunities to get afloat. There are still loads of fish in the bay with hounds, rays, eels, dogs and bass all within 5 miles of the slip and many more species if the weather allows us to put the hammer down and steam down channel.

Sunday June 18th and 7 boats with 16 anglers towed down to Brixham for a friendly comp with Brixham sea angling club. The weather for once was amazing with sunshine and flat seas all day. It made a pleasant change to fish in clear water and we started the day mackeral bashing for bait before moving on down to the skerries. There were plenty of plaice caught but mostly on the small side. Most boats had a spell at anchor off Start point catching huss, dogs, pout and a few rays and straps. Winner on the day was Brixhams Rob Caunters with a SE ray and Brixham won overall.

There haven't been any comps from Burnham since the last report but a few boats have made it out when possible. July 9th 3 boats launched from Burnham all staying local as the forecast was not great. Nonetheless they all caught lots of fish with Mark, Kelly and Leah

Bowden finding a nice bass each on Vicoue and plenty of hounds for everyone out there. Highlight of the day must be our club secretary Simon Stroud getting his boat out for the first time in 14 YEARS after an extensive (and lengthy) re-fit.

July 22nd and 2 boats made it out in a brisk southerly.

No bass were found but fishing was very busy. On Four Buoys we had 30+ rays with a large amount of small ones around 2lb which can only be good for the future. Biggest hound went 15-4 to Stephen Saxby.

The next club competition is on Sunday 20th August and will be our 4th attempt at the Fred Peters Trophy.

Our next club meeting is on Thursday 21st September at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club.

BRITISH RECORD (ROD-CAUGHT) FISH COMMITTEE RATIFY TWO NEW CLAIMS The BRFC met at The Natural History Museum, London, on 27th June 2017. Present were: Mike Heylin OBE (Chairman), Nick Simmonds (Secretary), Oliver Crimmen (Scientific Advisor, Natural History Museum), Andrew Nellist (Freshwater Specialist), Paul Coulson (Freshwater specialist), Will Barnard (Freshwater Specialist) and Tim Froome (Marine Specialist).

The following claims were ratified by the committee as new records: Gary Hillon – Spurdog (Squalus acanthius) – Shorecaught – South Devon, on 4th March 2017.

Gary’s fish was ratified at a weight of 17lb 8oz 8dr, adding 12oz to Mr Legg’s 53-year-old shore record from Chesil Beach.

RECENT CATCHES ABOARD SEAFIRE II

Shane Salmon – Spurdog (Squalus acanthius) – Boatcaught – off Hastings, East Sussex, on 9th April 2017.

Shane’s record is confirmed at the weight of 25lb 4oz, adding 15oz to Tom Walsh’s 2013 record from Northern Ireland waters.

The committee also considered a claim from Duncan Paul to have his capture of a shore-caught common skate (Dipturus batis) estimated to weigh 188lb recognised on the Notable Fish List. James’s fish, caught from a rock mark on the north Scottish coast, was measured at 84 inches in length and with wingtip to

wingtip measurement of 66 inches. The committee agreed to add Duncan’s capture to the Notable Fish List.

The Committee has two outstanding record claims awaiting completed paperwork from the captors: Chris Davey has made a claim for a garfish at 3lb 10oz caught from a South Devon beach and Dale Dudhill has claimed the 3-spined stickleback record with a specimen 9.5cm long and claimed to weigh 7.5 grams.

Will Barnard became the newest member of the British Record (rod-caught) Fish Committee, attending his first BRFC meeting and bringing his extensive coarse angling experience to the group. We were also pleased to welcome Tim Froome, the Committee’s Channel Islands representative to the meeting, who gave us some interesting insights into current sea angling in the Channel Islands.

The Committee would like to remind anglers that in the event of the capture of a potential record fish, the captor should first contact the British Record (rodcaught) Fish Committee without delay. Captors of potential record fish should contact the Secretary, Nick Simmonds, at the Angling Trust, on 01568 620447 or by email at brfc@anglingtrust.net Nick will record the details of the capture and advise the claimant on progressing the claim.

July can be a funny month here in the Bristol Channel as the smoothounds that have kept us so busy for the last few months seem to move off and everything seems to quieten down a bit. Most charter boats in the minehead area tend to head west to areas around porlock and Lynmouth and even as far as Ilfracombe in search of the summer species. The main target for the sporting angler is the tope which make their way into our waters in early summer gorging themselves on the shoals of mackerel that make their way up the channel. Most charter boats have accounted for some cracking specimens already this year and things should only improve into August. The bass fishing is now in full swing with plenty fish gracing

the decks when drifting the reefs and ledges with artificials or live sandeels. The majority of these fish will be returned due to current legislation. The ray fishing can be frantic right through the year but this last week we've seen some cracking specimen small eyed rays. As we move into August we should see the water temperature stabilise and hopefully we will start to encounter some of the smaller seasonal visitors which is an exciting prospect for any species angler.

The bream fishing has been patchy to say the least but there is still time and hopefully we might start to see the odd trigger fish turn up. Good luck if you are getting out in the coming weeks and don't forget to keep us posted with your catch pictures and reports.

MPS URGE PARENTS TO TAKE KIDS FISHING THIS SUMMER With the school holidays looming and the prospect of restless youngsters looking for ways to spend their time over the long six week break, fishing enthusiast MPs from the All Party Parliamentary Angling Group have urged parents to "take your kids fishing" this summer.

To get the message across, MPs Scott Mann and Charles Walker joined Will Barnard, Angling Development Manager at Thames Water, and Martin Salter, Angling Trust Head of Campaigns, at College Lake in Hampshire where they treated a group of youngsters to a special day out catching some beautiful carp and roach on a variety of methods.

Best fish of the day was a stunning 11lb 8oz common carp caught by Charles' son James floatfishing luncheon meat in the margins.

The students were from the John Madejski Academy in Reading where Thames Valley Angling boss Allan Clark and Martin Salter have set up a fishing club.

Thames Water is one company that believes in promoting angling on its waters and offers a number of ‘Try Fishing Days’ throughout the year at their angling academy at Walthamstow Reservoirs in London as well as at the famous fly fishery at Farmoor near Oxford.

Charles Walker MP, Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Angling, said: "My son James and I had a fantastic time down on the

lake and I can honestly say there are few things I'd rather be doing than taking my children fishing and helping them learn about wildlife and nature.

“I just wish more parents would take the time to go fishing with their children. There are a host of great schemes and projects out there for beginners so it really couldn't be easier."

Martin Salter, Head of Campaigns at the Angling Trust, added: "It is always great when youngsters catch their first rod-bending fish and we hope that the experience will ignite the same lifelong passion for our sport that still burns inside us older anglers.

“Young people have a lot of other distractions in this day and age but simple, outdoor pursuits like angling have been proved time and time again to be good for health and well-being and for gaining a greater understanding of the countryside and the environment."

This summer there are a host of projects and events which offer opportunities to discover the joys of fishing, including the Angling Trust’s ‘Get Fishing’ campaign, Get Hooked on Fishing’s ‘Family Fishing’ initiative and National Fishing Month, run by the Angling Trades Association. Children aged between 12 and 16 can now get a FREE Environment Agency rod licence to fish in stillwaters, canals, rivers and streams so it’s now even less expensive for families to start fishing.

By John Skeggs Good Weather ! Good Fishing ! Good Results ! It is not often fishermen are blessed with all three,not to mention Mackerel as well.

Inshore: Christchurch Ledge,Bream continue to be caught in good numbers albeit a bit smaller. Pollack can be caught in the deeper water on baited feathers.

There are plenty of Smoothounds in the Western Solent,all you need is a bucket of hard backs.

In the bay, the odd Small eyed rays are being caught

on frozen sandeel.

Mid Channel: The Cod haven't really shown in numbers this year, the ones that we have caught have been in double figures. Pollack and Ling are still quite plentiful.

Bass fishing: Our first trip of the season, float fishing live-baits,resulted in 9 quality fish (4 were returned).I'm looking forward to the next session.

Point. The shark was about ten plus feet long with a tail of over six feet thrashing about on the surface, I don't think I have ever seen anything so spectacular around our area before, it only lasted about two to three minutes but one for the memory bank for sure.

Inshore marks are still producing, however it can be a little hit or miss so it pays to have a look around if your usual marks are not producing.

This month has seen us having to travel that few miles further to find the fish but it does pay off in the long run. Wrecking is still very patchy all over, however some long runs down to the east did produce some good fish to bring home. The off shore banks have also produced some good catches of Blonde ray Thornback and Undulates with Bullhuss and none stop Tope. the Tope are so prolific that you don't have to go to your usual Tope mark as they are just about everywhere. This week we were given a spectacular show from a Thresher Shark, on the surface alongside the boat, we were anchored just south of St Catherines

Port Report August is the month when the Weymouth wrecking/ offshore charter boats traditionally join the inshore fleet to enjoy the terrific variety of species on offer.

This year, many of us have tried to steer our customers towards inshore fishing much earlier than usual because the wrecking has been awful since early June.

Offshore skippers are seen weeping on the quayside when our fuel man presents his bills.

We have all travelled stupid distances for very little reward and then, with nothing showing on the chosen wreck, gone haring off in a different direction adding yet more miles to what has become a fruitless search for the cod. The belief that there is a secret area where all the Channel cod are hiding has now finally been dispelled….we must reflect on the 2015 season as outstanding and the 2016 season as good…..and that the 2017 season has been the worst since the earth worked out how to revolve.

Because of the lack of cod there have been more pollack than usual but that is not to say there are many of them. A good day will see 20 fish caught and often it’s no-where near that. There have been some good ling catches and the conger anchoring sessions (yes, I know only 3 people like congering) have been very lively.

The inshore fishing has been much better than the wrecking although that also cannot be called ‘easy’.

We are very lucky the bream have shown up early and there has been reasonable catches. Regular ground baiting pays dividends so it is well worth making the effort to try and attract the bream to the boat. The bream marks also produce a few strap conger, small bull huss and an occasional pollack and gurnard.

The ‘grounds’ to the west of Portland and south of the Shambles have offered the more consistent fishing with a mixture of tope, hounds, rays, conger and bream. These marks require anchoring and, as is often said, our main problem is getting anglers to fish with using weight. The fish are often feeding in the tide and sometimes up to 2lb lead is required to fish through

the most productive time. Light tackle fishing has resulted in many really not wanting to fish ‘heavy’ but with today’s amazing gear, including twin speed reels, there should be no problem.

August is all about congering on the wrecks with the Weymouth Conger Festival due to take place 16th, 17th and 18th of the month. Anchoring will produce ling. There is alos always a very good opportunity to fish a lure over the wreck at anchor on the neap tides. Often 12oz lead is adequate and can be very productive for pollack and a stray bass. Be prepared to lengthen traces and step them up to 30lb as you must bring the fish to the anchored boat against the tide which does not happen when on the drift.

August has always been the start of the ‘inshore season’ with ray fishing on the various banks, mixed ground anchoring for the usual mixture of fish that favour a rocky bottom, drifting on the inshore wrecks for pollack if live eels are available and of course aiming for a good sized bass in the Portland Race using lures or live mackerel. Drifting will continue on The Shambles with an increased chance of brill with the turbot and the search for plaice will continue.

It has been very difficult for the skippers right along the south coast this year and it’s good to see our young skippers trying new things. Anglers will note young Ryan Casey’s success on Meercat with blue sharks on a multi-day excursion well to the south west of Weymouth. It’s great to see a bit of innovative experimentation paying off and I hope floods of anglers will immediately look up Ryan’s number and demand he takes them sharking.

Thank you to everyone for sticking with us Weymouth skippers over what I believe to have been the most difficult two months of fishing I have ever experienced.

We have often fished through cycles when the fish have been hard to find but somehow it has always turned around and we experience a dramatic improvement.

Tough going in daylight but the odd plaice flounder and school bass coming up!

Night fishing is providing some good catches of sole and pouts ... also some good thornbacks and hounds been caught in the rough ground near the pier..

Crab for the hounds fish baits for the rays and black lug for the soles...

BRIGHTON MARINA AND BEACHES.......

There's been some amazing catches of Bass the last few weeks along with some sole gurnards plenty of bream and the odd plaicd.. also the odd good hound coming up!

Always check with the Tackle Box in the marina before setting off just incase of closure due to bad weather....

When the water has a bit of colour or night fishing there are plenty of dog fish plus a fair few undulate rays and the odd hound and good size bass..

Things have been a bit slow in the day but some nice catches of undulate rays and hounds on the night tides... crab for the hounds and fish baits for the rays..

Selsey can produce a fair few species of rays incliding undulates small eyed spotted and sting rays... there has also been the odd Blonde ray caught as well....

HOVE BEACHES...

Plenty of beam plaice and some nice bass at night along with gurnards and the odd flounder...

Day fishing can be a bit tough witj the odd plaice bream and flounder but in the right conditions the undulate rays are still there to be caught....

Charter Vessel 'Good Day' Trying to describe capture the essence of an outstanding 10 day fishing expedition to the far side of the world, in just one article, isn’t easy as there are many different component parts (accommodation, the wildlife, the food, the country, the people and of course the fishing) that come together that make it a holiday to remember.

Having “done” West Africa for the past three years, we (that’s Mick Arrowsmith, Jon Mattick and myself) decided it was time to head for pastures new. We had two main criteria. Big game fishing wasn’t for us, we wanted to catch as many different fish species as possible (top of the list was the Roosterfish) and when not fishing we wanted to see/photograph plenty of wildlife.

With this in mind I contacted Benn Gilmour of Jackpot Sport Fishing. Benn has been advertising in the Sea Angling News for some time now and had been posting some amazing photos and reports on YouTube, FB and his website. Contact was very easy and it seemed no time at all from that initial email enquiry being made, to Mick, Jon and myself heading down the M4 towards Gatwick for the 10 hour + flight over to the countries capital, San Jose.

Flights & Accommodation British Airways fly direct to Costa Rica from Gatwick, twice a week (Wednesday and Saturdays). Tip…keep an eye on the ticket prices. By booking early I managed to save ourselves a lot of money.

Benn was able to offer us a choice of accommodation, from boutique hotels, to cheap hotels, B & B’s and self-catering villas. He is currently searching for a property to buy to turn into a fishing lodge and so be able to offer an all inclusive package.

In the end we opted to go self-catering in the luxurious Casa Luna villa on the outskirts of Quepos. The photos of this place did not do it justice, yet this place was one of the key components to our holiday. Three bedrooms (sleeps 7), all en suite, aircon, swimming pool and all the wildlife you could need (monkeys, birds, lizards, frogs, snakes etc), at the edge of the patio. A truly beautiful place to stay that went a long way to “making” the holiday.

Our Host From the moment we met our host Benn we realised that we’d met a diamond. Benn is a 36 year old Manxman who has travelled extensively, fishing in some of the world’s most exotic locations. In the course of his travels he met and married Cathy. It had long been his wish to set up a charter business and 20 months ago he realised his dream by buying the Good Day and setting up Jackpot Sport Fishing in the Marina Pez Vela (a very well equipped and new marina) at Quepos on the Costa Rican Pacific coast. To our knowledge, he is the only British charter boat skipper in Costa Rica.

We had arrived with the bare outline of an itinerary and a wish list. Benn had carried out extensive research on our behalf and when we met up over a beer on the first night, all the options were discussed and a plan was put into place.

Nothing was too much trouble for Benn and it was his clear intention to make sure that we had a holiday to remember (I also know that Cath was working hard in the background … thank you Cath!).

Our plan was to fish out of Quepos for two days, both in and off shore, to get our Roosters, have two days visiting some of the many National Parks, then three days fishing off the OSA Peninsula (staying at the aptly named Poor Mans Paradise) and end up with a final couple of chill out days.

The Good Day GOOD DAY is a 31’ Costa Rican custom built Sportfisher, equipped with the latest electronics, live-tank, tuna tubes, outriggers, fighting chair and quality tackle from Shimano.

The boat is a good size for 3 serious anglers but fine for 4-5 people if it’s a family just looking for a day’s fishing. The boat is fully equipped with all the tackle you will need, from heavy-duty game gear down to very lightweight gear and fly rods. Lunch and cold drinks are provided.

When he bought the boat, Benn retained the services of the previous owner, Manuel, as skipper. In doing so he ensured that a wealth of local knowledge was kept at his fingertips.

Fishing Day 1 ROOSTERFISH………. our target species. We went, we sought, we found. Fishing inshore just 20 minutes south of the Marina, the first came onboard within half an hour of the live baits going overboard. I cannot describe in words the power of these fish and the fight they give, especially when fishing with light gear. The relief is palpable when they are finally boated. Quick photos were taken and the fish returned to the water as soon as possible (they are a protected species).

4 were caught with the heaviest fish being a whopping 50 pounder ( note: a 95 pounder was caught last week). Using different fishing tactics and gear a further 6 species were caught, Trigger Fish, Cortez Grunt, Spot Tail Grunt, Lane Snapper, Spotted Scorpion fish and Grouper.

Fishing Day 2 This time we were 30 miles off-shore. A small time spent trolling took care of lunch when I latched onto a 25lb Yellow Fin Tuna. After that we put some sardines and bonitos down onto a reef. The action was fast and furious with Mick and Jon latching into some nice Jacks and the Rainbow Runners providing some excellent sport. Also accounted for were Groupers, Silky Snappers and rabbitfish.

Fishing Days 3 to 5 Travelling 60 miles south, stopping and fishing at various marks on the way, we arrived just past Drakes Bay on the OSA Peninsula. Arriving in the bay at Poor Mans Paradise we suddenly realised that the only way we were going to get ashore was by surf riding a local panga boat through the waves and straight up the beach…what a ride! It turned out we were the only guests at this Lodge, located just off the beach and surrounded by rain forest and therefore had the undivided attention of both the barman and the chef, Consuela, who superbly cooked up our daily catches. The wildlife in and around the Lodge, (a collection of wooden cabins) was second to none, but we were there primarily for the fishing.

A variety of fishing techniques were used from ultra lightweight with Sabikis, to live bait trolling and dead baits on the bottom (sometimes in 400ft+). This resulted in a wide variety of fish being caught, including rainbow wrasse, split tailed bass, groupers, triggers and panamanian sergeant fish.

At the end of holiday, between us, we’d caught 39 species of fish (7 Roosters) and estimated that at least that many species remained uncaught…we may need to go back!

Summary We experienced a trip that will remain in our memories for a very long time and I haven’t even mentioned the wildlife.

Benn’s organisational skills, his enthusiasm and skill with the cameras played a major part in us having a holiday to look back on and relish.

West Bay S.A.C. held their annual R.N.L.I. open match on Sunday 9th July. We chose this year to move it to a Sunday and to fish 13:00 - 18:00, with the boundaries being West Bay to the Dragons Teeth (excluding the cliffs from East Beach West Bay to Burton Bradstock due to risk of falling rocks). Sadly only 18 anglers turned out to fish the match. The anglers where greeted with lovely sunny weather and a flat calm sea. Anglers were hoping for some summer species to show I.e garfish, mullet, mackerel, and plaice. Unfortunately the fishing was poor with only two anglers returning fish to the scales. The winner of the match was Dave Lane. With a garfish and second was Steve Harwood with a plaice. Great work was done by Frances, Johnny and Martin Jones for selling raffle tickets.

On Friday the 7th July Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a shore competition at Friars Cliff which was kindly organised by Roland Blomfield.

The weather for the evening was dry and warm. 9 club members signed on and 6 weighed in fish consisting of smooth hounds, scad and pout. 6 fish were caught in total for a weight of 4lb 15.6oz.

The best round fish of the competition was a smooth hound of 3lb 7oz caught by Colin Saunders.

West Bay SAC 1st July 2017, Saturday Juniors, East Pier West Bay 12:00 - 15:00 Five junior members and one guest signed on to fish the latest Saturday junior match on East pier on a sunny but breezy day. Five of the six competitors managed to catch fish, species caught were; weever, wrasse, shanny, blenny, flounder & plaice.

17th June 2017, Saturday Juniors, East Pier West Bay 12:00 - 15:00 six juniors turned out to fish on this HOT HOT Saturday, everyone of them managing to find a fish or two..

It was a tight fight for first place all through the match until a legal Ballan wrasse made an appearance.

On Wednesday evening the 5th July Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held an Adult Win-Sum League competition which was kindly organised by Colin Saunders.

The competition was held on Lymington Sea Wall in sunny and calm weather conditions and 14 club members signed on.

The longest round fish was an eel of 75cm weighing 1lb 9 5/8oz caught by Andy Hopkins.

The 2nd longest round fish was a bass of 58cm weighing 4lb 61/8oz caught by Gavin Sloper.

No flat fish were caught.

Species caught on the day were; wrasse, shanny, weever, rockling & blenny.

The weather for the evening was dry, cloudy and windy. There was a fair amount of weed but it was fishable.

9 club members signed on and 3 weighed in fish consisting of dogfish, pout and bream. 5 fish were caught for a total weight of 3lb 3.6oz. The best fish of the evening was a dogfish caught by Chris Ellis.

On the evening of Monday 19th June Lymington & District Sea fishing Club held a Shingle Bank League competition which was kindly organised by Andy and Ollie Hopkins.

The weather was hot, sunny with calm clear water and no wind. Shorts and T shirt weather all evening. Sadly there was a lot of weed which spoiled things abit.

10 anglers signed on and 6 weighed in 9 fish consisting of pout, sole, black bream and dogfish for a total weight of 6lb 6.6oz.

even junior members and one guest signed on to fish this years Frank & Peggy Daw Memorial Match from East pier West Bay on 15th July. The competitors enjoyed a cloudy but dry day the wind was a south-westerley, the sea was lumpy. Six of the entrants managed to catch fish, As last year Eden Lynham took an early lead with a legal shore rockling of 240g & ended the match with a legal weight of 240 g and a total weight of 1 kg 12 g. But this year he was unable to fend of the challenge from Aaron chambers who managed to finish the match with a legal weight of 306 g a total weight of 1 kg 53 g. to take the trophy. The winner Aaron walked away with a new rod and reel worth £300 kindly donated by the Daw family who also donated the second & third placed prizes.

A better than usual run of school bass in addition to the usual flounders and eels enlivened this match on a breezy and sunny evening on the upper Dee estuary.

Fish were slow to feed on the flood tide and England International, Heather Lindfield took an early lead with a flounder and a bass for 100 points.

As the tide turned, there were more fish (albeit mostly near the opposite bank) and Preston’s Stuart Dewhurst, who is finding great form on this estuary, landed an unbeatable twelve fish from downriver Zone A. Team Wales Youth International, Tomos Hughes, who won here in 2016, headed Zone B for second overall.

Reigning champion John Waugh’s third place gave him the series lead.
