WINNER Fishing Platte Saline beach on the north coast of Alderney local angler Scott Audoire hooked and landed a 25.0.0. female blonde ray.

The fish was weighed on digital scales and returned immediately unharmed. Scott was using a Zziplex M4 and a Daiwa Mag 7HT. Line was Daiwa Tournament 20lb. He was fishing for undulates using a garfish/sandeel wrap to a size 1 Sakuma Manta. The hook was bent landing the fish and on straightening after unhooking snapped!!! This is Scott’s largest shore caught fish and very well deserved. This is also the third largest blonde ray ever caught from the Alderney shoreline.

It was 30 years ago this year that the RNRMAA Sea Angling Section won the Boat and Shore Inter Service Championships in the same year. The first Armed Service to achieve that historic feat.

To commemorate that occasion a new Facebook group has been set up by the then Secretary, Master at Arms Trevor

Sutch. Trevor’s intention is to recruit past members of the RNRMAA and get them fishing again with their old shipmates.

A reunion match has been set up for Saturday 1st December 2018 at Eastney/ Southsea Beach, Portsmouth, which will see a new Veterans Champion inaugurated

at the 1st RN & RM Veterans Shore Championship. Already many archive photographs are flooding the Facebook group and old shipmates have contacted friends from all over the world. The group are now looking to sign up more Royal Navy and Royal Marine retired or serving sea anglers and encourage anyone wanting to join to contact Trevor Sutch via Facebook.

After the beast from the east had left our shores we were out on the following few calm days after, but trying to catch some fish was next to impossible and I am afraid many customers were frankly disappointed with our efforts going home empty handed, but after a week the weather started to warm up and a slight improvement in angling was forth coming, until we were hit by another dump of snow. Well that put us back again by a week same problems no fish, we were burning far more fuel ranging the Thames estuary for miles hunting down a few fish and believe me we were trying hard for

our customers. Wow how its changed the last few days up to thirty rays a trip a lot of big doubles many returned with a few kept for the pot just none stop sport.

Some big channel whiting also being caught but codling few and far between I think it’s been too cold for even for them maybe they have gone to Norway it’s probably warmer there. So I can say with confidence now that it’s safe to book a few trips and dust them rods off bass won’t be far behind not that we will be targeting them though !!!!!!!!! so its all good happy angler leaving the boat happy skipper driving home wife now smiling.

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE

I think this will probably be my shortest ever report for SAN over the 3 or so years I have been doing this as I can’t recall any noteworthy fish having been caught from the shore during the past month. A combination of March being a relatively quiet fishing month combined with the freezing temperatures has resulted in many anglers not bothering whilst those that have ventured out have blanked. It’s certainly one of the slowest months I have ever known and hopefully with Easter just around the corner we will see an up-turn in angling activity.

Plaice should now start showing from venues such as Chesil (West Bexington and Cogden being the favoured venues), Beesands and at the mouth of the Salcombe Estuary around East Portlemouth. I understand that a recent Teignmouth SAS Club Match at the latter

produced a nice early-season Plaice of 2-12 for Adrian Diment. The smaller tides are generally more favourable for East Portlemouth and its’ the perfect venue if there is any wind coming out of the East (which seems to be every weekend)! Rag and lug baits tipped with small strips of squid should help you find a fish or two.

From speaking to Malcolm Jones of Sea Angler 2 it is a similar issue on the boats, with the weather limiting the opportunities for the charter fleet to head out. Malc has managed a few trips on the local reef and wreck marks during quieter spells and managed to find some nice-sized pollack and ling.

CHESIL BEACH REPORT

By Gareth Mayers Finally spring is upon us!

With temperatures slightly on the up and the final patches of snow melting away on the beach, I’m sure most anglers reading this report cant wait to get out in the sun and try for an early plaice. All be it slightly skinny fish due to the time of year they still provide decent sport on a lighter set-up and theres always the possibility of that better sized flattie!

The west end off the beach are the best areas to target the species with the preferred baits being lugworm, ragworm or a combination of the two. The only problem at the moment is that the water clarity isn’t at its best and with the “beast from the east” bringing subzero temperatures and bitter winds everything pretty much came to a stop including the fishing.

Many anglers were unable to get out as roads were covered in snow drifts and ice making driving conditions far from ideal!

Saying this a few hardy anglers were able to get to the beach and was able to land a few early fish. Wayne Hand’s been putting in the hours while the beach was still covered in snow resulting in some lovely early plaice.

The only good thing to come from the cold is that I’ve not heard of the dreaded spider crab turning up as of yet but I’m sure they will. As soon as they arrive there’s really not a lot you can do to combat them, try and make your rigs as simple as possible with very little bling as this could attract the crabs more than the fish. Going from past experiences rigs like fixed clipped downs can become a nuisance because as soon as the crab cuts through the snood you’re left messing around tying new rigs and simply wasting tackle. Rigs like an up & over are ideal as you have a nice long snood which will be led on the sea bed and if snipped off you can easily replace the hook.

At the other end of the beach (ferrybridge) you will still pick up the odd plaice but this tends to be caught as by catch, as not many anglers target them at this end.

While fishing a club match in the middle of February I managed to put a few bonus points on the card with a surprise flattie of 37cm. There have also been a few pollack

caught while fishing closer in the gutter, nothing big but another species to try and target if your day isn’t going the way you’d hoped. Pop-up rigs are a favourite whilst targeting pollack in matches but I have seen these greedy fish caught on big squid baits targeting other species such as rays.

Staying on the subject of targeting ray, the fishing at ferrybridge has been exceptional over the last few weeks with a lot of double figure fish being reported. On a recent trip to the beach I bumped into Ben Stockley who had a brilliant days angling and ended up with a total of 7 rays and four species (blondes, undulates, small eyed and thornbacks). Myself and Danny Hardwick managed a few fish the same day with the biggest being a blonde going nearly 13lb and a nice surprise spotted which made a total of 5 species of ray between us in daylight hours.

A few days later, charter skipper Ryan Casey from Weymouth managed to land a monster blonde ray weighing 23lb 11oz on his last cast just as he was packing his beach shelter away!

I usually target these fish in daylight simply because you have less chance of nuisance fish picking your bait up like dogfish and strap conger.

It pays to use a pulley rig as there are a few snags present with the sea bed becoming more rough and broken the further you head towards Portland. Preferred bait would be sandeel with a slither of squid elasticated to it, but you can catch ray on a whole manor of fish baits. I tend to use a nice strong hook coupled with strong snood especially if theres a swell present as this could prove difficult trying to beach the fish.

Fishing is generally hard work this time of year but there are fish out there if your willing to put the hours in and with the cold weather finally on its way out and the temperatures on the increase the fishing can only improve. More numbers of plaice should start to show as the water clarity improves and dare I say the odd mackerel may even make an early appearance!

ANGLERS DEN OPEN The annual Anglers Den Open Beach Fishing Competition was held on Sunday 4th March in Pevensey Bay on a catch and release basis ( to size limits) with 70 pegs.

After a period of cold/snowy weather with poor catches, the settled weather resulted in good catches during the comp, mainly dabs, flounder and plaice, which have continued since. The continental style prize structure meant that the over-all winner is taken out of the zone prizes. All other prize money is then paid out in equal zones.

The over-all winner fishing in B zone was Darren Newland with 217 points. Including a lovely 47cm plaice!! Winning £300.00 SECTION WINNERS A ZONE 1st Ralph Crosby 152 pts. 2nd Darren Bond 144 pts. 3rd Colin Isaacs 142 pts. 4th Tim Relf 117 pts. 5th Paul King 78 pts. 6th Colin Pickard 71 pts. 7th Mick Webb 56 pts.

B ZONE 1ST Glyn Morgan 162 pts. 2nd Mel Adrian 86 pts. 3rd Gerald Sargeant 76 pts. 4th Mick Perfect 74 pts. 5th Dan Mogridge 70 pts.

Pairs winners were Darren Newland and Dan Mogridge with 287 pts. 2nd were Glyn Morgan and Ian Hopper with 222 pts.

Biggest flat was a plaice of 47cms for Darren Newland, 2nd was a plaice of 40cms for Glyn Morgan. Biggest round was a ling of 25cms for Barry Sinden, 2nd was a ling of 22cms for Colin Isaacs.

ANDERIDA FISHING CLUB On Wednesday 28th February the club held a match in very cold icy conditions, with sub zero temperatures and a strong easterly wind chill only 7 anglers braved the conditions. Unfortunately only 1 fish was caught ! a small 7oz flounder for the lucky angler Kevin Morgan.

The presentation night for 2017 was held on Thursday March 8th at the Ocean View cafe in Pevensey Bay. With a good turnout and plenty of good food it was a really nice evening enjoyed by the members !

Top winners included best bass Joe Plumstead with 2lb 5oz also winning the biggest smoothhound with 9lb. Joe also picked up the most species caught by a member in 2017 with 15 species. Harvey Plumstead won the junior title as well as the junior species title! The biggest ray went to Dennis Puttick with a Thornback of 7lb 14oz. The Plaice was shared between Ian Hopper and Gerald Sargeant with fish of 2lb 9 ¼ oz. Paul King Picked up the dab trophy with 10 ½ oz and Glyn Morgan the

pout trophy with 1lb 1 ½ oz. Colin Everest won the whiting trophy with 15oz. The sole was won by David Tame with 1lb 14oz and the flounder by Tim Lane with 1lb 3 ½ oz. The best specimen fish was awarded to a club record eel of 2lb 12oz for Paul Christopher ! Other trophies included the biggest flatfish in club matches which was a sole of 1lb 9oz for Tim Lane and the biggest round was a bass of 2lb 5oz for Joe Plumstead.

Colin Isaacs picked up the spring cup as well as the championship runners up trophy.

Trevor Rooney won the most species in club matches with 9 and also became the Anderida 2017 Beach Champion!

Congratulations to Trevor and all the other trophy winners for 2017!!

OVER FIFTIES BEACH MATCHES The Fourth Over fifties match was fished at White Horses, Pevensey Bay On Monday 19th February with 27 anglers taking part.

The winner with 2lb 11oz was Fred Wassell, including the biggest flatfish, a plaice of 1lb 15 ½ oz as well as the biggest round a bass of 11 ½ oz ( catch and release on bass).

Second was John Ungar with 2lb 2oz, third Keith Erridge with 2lb 1oz and fourth Mike Perfect with 1lb 9oz.

The fifth match was held on Monday 5th March, also fished at White Horses with 18 anglers fishing! The winner with an excellent bag of flatfish was Tony McDonald with 5lb 1oz. Second Alan Smith with 3lb 5 ½ oz. Third Colin Sargeant with 3lb 1oz and fourth Mike Perfect with 2lb 13oz. Heviest flatfish was a plaice of 1lb 4oz for Alan Smith and the heaviest round a ling of 3 ½ oz for Ian Hopper.

GENERAL Still plenty of plaice as well as some nice plump flounders and dabs showing throughout the region. Some good plaice still at Seaford with fish to 5lb being reported!! On Monday February 19th I managed to catch some nice plaice at Seaford with a 55cm fish weighing 3lb 5oz as well as a 45cm fish plus others. There were bigger fish than mine caught the same day!! I saw a lovely 3lb 8oz plaice near me and heard of a 5lb fish caught that morning ! (i only started at 13.30 pm to fish the ebb tide!) Some good catches have been reported from Langney Point and on Friday 9th March Fred Wassell caught some nice Plaice and flounder including a plaice of 3lb 3oz. ON Monday 12th March Gary Banfield managed a treble shot of sizable plaice and went to catch quite a few!! Its nice to see some quality flatfish being caught and we continues through the spring !!

Not a great deal to report as the fishing has been hampered by constant strong winds and severe weather warnings keeping most anglers tucked up in the warm. Our thoughts are with those charter skippers and boat anglers in Holyhead. On the odd occasion anglers have been able to get afloat the offshore fishing has been very good with plenty of Spurs, Congers and a few Rays, many of the Spurs are in ‘pup’ so please avoid unnecessarily handling and support their bodies properly if you need to them onboard for a photograph. Local VI angler Dave Colcough landed a Spurdog of 19lb, Dave is an inspiration to all as the only his dependency upon others is to help him onto the boat and tell him what species of fish he has landed, he cuts all his own bait, ties his rigs is very quick witted and is not shy on giving it out when needed. The highlight of this month was the AGM of the Professional Boatmans Association (the only association representing this countries charter boat industry) held this year at the RNLI college which included a tour of their wonderful facilities and a quick turn in the simulator.

SILVER SPRAY REPORT

With all the wind, rain and snow we have been having over the last month this is going to be a brief report. We have managed 4 days afloat since mid February, thankfully the quality of the fishing has more than made up for the lack of opportunities to get out there. We have focused our efforts on the wrecks mid channel and that has paid off with good numbers and some quality fish making appearances. Biggest so far is around the 15lb mark with average sat at about 8lb, a key ingredient for success seems to be a very long trace sometimes

as much as 15 feet. We managed to beat one of our longest standing boat records in early March as Pete Knight battled a 9lb 8oz coalfish to the surface. The record has been at 6lb ever since Silver Spray 1’s first trip to Alderney in 2006. Elsewhere we did have a couple of hours on the spurs whilst doing some filleting one day and they are still on the grounds in abundance with a few blonde rays thrown in for good measure. Over the next month we shall see the arrival of the flatfish on the banks and the bream on the reef grounds.

A great night last night at our presentation evening in Honiton at the hare and hounds pub.

Best fish of the year went to Tom Travers with a shore pollack of 9lb 14oz. Senior shore winner was Ken sparks and the boat winner was Bill Cassar. Junior winners were Jack Squance and Archie Sweetland.

The recent cold spell of weather with bitter North East Winds and snow has decimated angling sport along the North Devon Coast with angling effort at an all time low. Those that have ventured out on the shoreline since the Beast from the East one have struggled to find any feeding fish.

Even dogfish have been thin on the ground. This has undoubtedly been a severe blow to local tackle shops who will have sold very little bait and tackle over a month long period when angers are normally starting to prepare for the coming spring.

Before the weather turned anglers were still finding a few spurdog and ray. Dick Talbot won Bideford Clubs twenty-four hour rover with a thornback ray of 9lb 6oz.

In runner up spot was Nathan Clements with a small-eyed ray of 9lb 5oz and in third Kyle Blackmore with a spurdog of 9lb 14oz.

Combe Martin Sea Angling Clubs end of

winter rover was held over the weekend of the second major weather event and was won by Ross Stanway who caught a rockling of 1lb. Appledore Shipbuilders monthly rover was won by Andrew Atkinson who caught a 2lb dogfish.

When conditions have permitted John Barbeary has taken anglers to mid channel marks off Ilfracombe where they have found spurdog to 18lb in reasonable numbers. Toby Bassett boated a fine conger of 44lb. Sport with spurdog, huss and conger should be good when conditions allow boats to get out. Reel Deal Charters will also be arriving back in Ilfracombe for the spring and summer season and will undoubtedly be taking anglers in search of porbeagle off the North Cornish Coast.

Shore angling prospects should steadily improve as temperatures slowly climb. Ray should start to show from local beaches.

The Bristol Channel federation of sea Anglers recently held their annual presentation at the Royal Hotel on the seafront at Weston Super Mare.

Guests for the evening were the family of their President Don Metcalfe who sadly passed away last year after many years of service to the federation. Don was a founder member of the federation that was set up in 1961 to bring together the many clubs that fish the Bristol Channel waters.

A cheque for £600 was presented to Dons wife Sandra for passing on to the RNLI in memory of his and the federations support for them. The moneyed been raised at the Winter Open held in Minehead. The cheque was presented by John May who has recently taken on the role of President in succession to Don. Cups and Trophies were awarded to member clubs and their members for fish caught within the Bristol Channel although recognition is given to fish taken out of the area.

Major awards for local fish / events included Vincent Coles Trophy best shore specimen - Darren Bell - Seawest - 21lb 10oz blonde ray - Minehead.

Isambard Trophy best shore specimen - George Martin - Portishead boats Silver Eel - 3lb 8oz - Portishead.

Bridgwater Conger Shield - Shore Ross Stanway - Combe Martin SAC 30lb 3oz - Ilfracombe.

Don Metcalfe Shark Trophy - Mark Watts - Reff Raiders - 350lb Ilfracombe.

George Gale Flatfish Trophy - John May - Dover Sole - 3lb 2oz - Portishead.

Browning Trophy teams of 10 - West Coast and Watchet.

In total 301 specimen claims had been submitted by the member clubs and Minehead was recorded as the most prolific venue with 36 boat claims and 72 from the shore.

This week I welcomed Luke Coles from Midsummer Norton for a guiding session.

Luke wanted to get familiar with one of the local shore marks. Luke is a competent sea angler generally fishing further up channel closer to home and occasionally visiting the Minehead area and popping into see me at West coast Tackle for a bit of info. So it was nice to be able to get out and show him a new area that should reward him for future visits , even if we drew a blank on the day.

Joining us at the last minute was Devon angler John Crotty for another session looking to find a codling or two after a frustrating session last month.

This area was also new for John and with it being very rough and broken ground rotten bottom rigs armed with mustard uptide Viking hooks were the order of the day. The reason for using these hooks in rough ground is simple. When snagged up. Its either the lead or the hook. With the lead on a weak link it will break off easily with a gentle pull. But if it’s the hook that’s snagged these hooks will bend out.

I’ve found out on average 8/10 snags I’ve witnessed have been the hook snagging after the lead breaking off , and often it’s just the hook that’s bent out and the lead

still on. I must add that in 25 years of using these hooks I’ve never lost a fish with one snapping or bending out on a fish. Unlike other hooks.

Both Luke and John benefited from this on the day with only a few hooks replaced and the odd lead being left in the rocks and weed, and both lads having a few codling each. Ok the 2-4lb spring codling that are about didn’t show up for them on the day but there’s every chance they will on another day. Now, I rarely fish during guiding sessions, but always go fully prepared too, if I feel I need to lead the session by example and also, occasionally my client wants or asks me to have a go and fish along side them. So with about an hour to go I lobbed one out. 50m away from the other rods as not to interfere and I bagged one about 2.5lb. Feeling guilty I didn’t cast back out for about half hour until Luke said just have another cast. So I did and quickly bagged one of 4lb7oz. This is why I don’t make an effort to fish during guiding unless for reasons mentioned. I know both John and Luke take a lot of confidence from the mark from seeing these two fish caught. And I hope they will both return and get the same results next time .

LANGSTONE HARBOUR AREA BOAT FISHING REPORT

By Neville Merritt, Southsea Marina Angling Club I thought writing the February catch report was a struggle, but March has been even more of a challenge! Wind and weather have been very much against boat anglers venturing out, except for the fortunate few who have more flexible arrangements and can take advantage of a weather window midweek. Those that did make it out headed for the Channel wrecks where some good pollack were caught. Tim Andrews and Kev Johnson provided photographic evidence.

Inshore, whiting have all but gone away now and many boats have struggled to catch anything worthwhile (that is, other than pout and dogfish). Plaice should be putting in an appearance and a few have been caught on the usual marks by The Blocks and in Hayling Bay. It is likely that the storms have disturbed the shellfish beds that attract plaice, so we may have to search out new marks that hold them. If we have a few days of settled weather maybe we can go and find out.

This is the time of year for boat maintenance while the fishing is quiet, and a number of the charter boats have been ashore for their annual overhaul and antifoul. This is also the time of year for the local clubs to celebrate successes over the past year and award prizes.

Here are some highlights from the Southsea Marina Angling Club awards night. Club Champion Cup was won by Mark Banks, Runner Up Kris Scott, who also won Best

Specimen with a bass of 11lb 3oz. Mark also won the Bream Cup with a 3lb 5oz fish caught while wreck fishing. Cod Cup was won by Steve Kelly 17lb 1oz and son Jake took the Junior Cup with and Undulate Ray of 14lb. Tim Andrews bagged both the Plaice Cup and Pollack Cup. For the ladies, Martina Haughton took both the Ladies Cup with an Undulate Ray of 14lb 6oz and the Ladies Species cup with 10.

On the subject of Species, the Crawford family nailed it with Heber smoking out a staggering 54 species to win the Species Cup and son Archie with 28 for the Junior Species Cup. Southsea Marina Disabled Angling Club prizes were dominated by George Dominy who won the Champion, Combination (boat and lake) and Specimen Cups (the latter with a smoothhound of 16lb), and Jon Leythorne who won the Champion RunnerUp, Three Oaks and Hambrook Cups. John Wearn won the Best Cod award with 11lb 15oz.

The Eastney Cruising Association overall Champion this year was again Colin Kidd, who also won Specimen, Cod and the Pairs Cup with M. Davis. Other cups went to S. Emery – Flounder; T. Baker – Plaice; M. Argyle – Bream; D. Pine – Bass; W. Comben – Ray; K. Bowden – Whiting; D. Sissons – Wrasse; T. Ward – Variety and M. Davis – Tiers Cup. The Ladies Cup was won by K. Wheatcroft and Junior Cup went to J. Kelly.

Burnham on Sea

The last month has been an absolute disaster weather wise with no boats managing to launch from Burnham. We can only hope that things improve as it is getting depressing working all week, often in light southerly winds only for the weekend to come around and the wind pick up and turn northerly keeping the boats on their trailers.

By now there should be the first bass in the bay and some fresh spring codling we just need to be able to get out there and find them. The first of the smouthounds should make an appearance further down channel which will add a bit of variety for those prepared to steam down there.

Six club members have just paid Skjervoy in Norway a visit and although they experienced some fairly severe weather restricting their fishing on a couple of days they still managed to land some good fish.

MINEHEAD BOAT REPORT

Plummeting sea temperatures have sent boat catches to a seasonal low.

Even dogfish are proving hard to get.

This is typical for the time of year with most species going into a temporary hibernation period. All that said, for the die hard, there are still one or two codling and whiting though the next couple of weeks will see the last of them. Offshore grounds are similar with the spurdog shoals moving out. They will now have

laid their pups and will be heading for the deeper waters. Conger are also on a go slow with the few that have been taken showing signs of lethargy, biting very shy and with very little for a fight. With a bit of luck, the next month or so will see the water temperature start to increase when we can expect the spring ray run to hit the headlines. Until then, I'm afraid we will just have to keep trying and hope for the best.

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT

This month I could possibly fit my report on the back of a match box.

Obviously the weather has played a major role.

Most serious Bristol Channel anglers deal with a bit of crap weather thrown at them. But heavy snow and the evilest east winds killed off any bit of enthusiasm left in the tank.

On the occasions when the foul weather has eased off and anglers have ventured out, the codling have been obliging from many shore marks from Porlock to Portishead.

During my recent guiding sessions that have taken place over the past month. Codling have been the main target and the my clients have been successful with a good few codling making an appearance. And with the modest amount present in the channel, it’s likely my spring codling guiding sessions will still be on offer at least until the end of May for those interested.

Apart from that it’s been hard going. I’ve never seen the beaches so void of anglers. It’s no wonder many anglers are put off from going with the lack of fish being reported because of the lack of rod hours being put in . Hopefully with spring upon us this will change.

at Minehead which was a nice surprise for the lucky Angler.

The month ahead holds good potential for some classic Bristol Channel spring codling sport as well as positive ray action.

Many anglers will be looking forward to the returning packs of Smoothounds. It’s that time of year again with the Smoothound season only a matter of 4/6 weeks away. With the crab being plentiful and of a good size at this time of year.

Its a wise idea to squirrel a stash away for when the demand is high and the crab are small and hard to find . In the mean time the spring codling love a juicy crab.

We should also start to see more bass feature in catches throughout the channel. Minehead Angler Paul James has spent the winter targeting the bass on lures and has enjoyed several good sessions during the colder months with plenty of bass to 3lb. This is encouraging to know it’s not all about the cod and other species during the winter.

Anyway I hope the month ahead is a positive one for all those fishing in our mighty Bristol Channel.

LAUNCH OF CALDECOTTE XPERIENCE’S NEW ACCESSIBLE WHEELYBOAT Launch on Thursday 15 March of Caldecotte Xperience’s new accessible Wheelyboat provides access to waterbased activities to disabled people for the first time A brand new wheelchair accessible powerboat is soon to be launched at Caldecotte Xperience in Milton Keynes, the first fully accessible power boat to operate at this outdoor activity centre, strengthening existing provisions for people with disabilities. The two charities, The Wheelyboat Trust and Action4Youth, are working together to provide young people with mobility impairments with the ability to participate fully in waterbased activities at this centre.

The new Coulam V20 Wheelyboat, aptly named ‘The Wheel of Opportunity’ in a competition won by local school, Great Linford Primary, will be officially launched at 11:00am on Thursday 15 March and will be the first V20 to operate in the Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire region. The event will be attended by local MP Iain Stewart, as well as the boat builder Jim Coulam, and engine provider Ade Coulam who are brothers. This vessel will provide safe, dignified and easy access to the water for all disabled visitors.

The V20 can be powered by an outboard up to 140hp enabling it to provide high speed action.

The Wheelyboat Trust and Action4Youth partnership started in 2015 when an instructor from Caldecotte Xperience saw a Coulam V20 Wheelyboat being towed along the M1. The instructor realised this might be the perfect vessel to fill a significant gap in provision for mobility impaired people at the outdoor education centre. After Googling the model name, the instructor discovered this was the boat’s builder, Jim Coulam, on his way to the Southampton Boat Show.

This twist of fate led The Wheelyboat Trust and Action4Youth working together to fund the Coulam Wheelyboat V20. The total cost of the project was £41,000 for features including folding bench seating, wheelchair anchorage for the helmsman’s seat, and a 4-wheel braked trailer, with the Wheelyboat Trust raising £10,500 towards the overall cost. Caldecotte Xperience can now enrich the lives of their learning, sensory and mobility impaired visitors with this new roll-on, roll-off access power boat, which will enable them to enjoy the excitement of water sports, without the need to leave their chairs.

Caldecotte Xperience prides itself in being fully inclusive, with a team of experienced staff who have been specially trained to work with disabled people and understand their complex needs. They endeavour

to tailor every activity and course to meet the needs of each individual attending, ensuring that everyone, regardless of disability, can enjoy the challenge of adventurous outdoor activities. The special features of the Wheelyboat will provide users with mobility impairments with complete independence, as disabled users will be able to learn to drive the boat themselves, as well as participating as members of the crew, acting as lookout and helping moor the boat. Caldecotte Xperience is confident that at least 700 young people will use the V20 in its first year of operation. In fact, Barnados has already signed up to use it to offer training and qualifications to its beneficiaries in the 19 to 24 age range.

Developed by The Wheelyboat Trust and J M Coulam Boatbuilders, the Coulam V20 offers flexible seating, level deck and a watertight bow door that lowers to form a solid ramp for extremely easy and safe wheelchairfriendly access. The craft allows people with mobility impairments to participate in waterborne activities alongside and on equal terms with their non-disabled counterparts, an important factor in the quality of life they are able to lead.

Our new Wheelyboat is the first of its kind to be launched in the region and will enable all children and young people to have an equal opportunity to experience the excitement and adventure of water sports activities."

This project will benefit in particular those with the most limiting mobility impairments, improve their well-being and broaden their horizons through challenges, independence and thrills!”

Port Report What a grim and terrible start to the season for the charter fleets around the UK and for you anglers that are longing to go fishing with them.

In Weymouth, as everywhere, conditions have been grim with bitterly cold winds and sub zero degrees. Snow and ice have prevented customers reaching Weymouth and the conditions have been such that angling would have been an endurance test and certainly not much fun for much of the month.

There have been a handful of pleasant days when wrecking has taken place and results have been very good with pollack well into double figures taking a variety of lures fished on the drift. Apart from pollack there has been no mention of any other species from the wrecks.

There will be an increasing chance of ling taken on the drift.

Inshore, April has been good for turbot with a slim chance of a brill. The sandeels on The Shambles will make an appearance which will encourage a return of the rays, spudogs, pollack and maybe even a longed for plaice to this particular location.

The Adamant, 10 fathom and Kidney Banks will be fished with rays as the main intended target species although stray conger, a bonus turbot, dogs and hounds will be taken.

The rough ground marks south of the Shambles and close to The Bill are usually very quiet in April but marks to the east of Weymouth will start to produce bream.

Inshore fishing has also suffered from the weather conditions with the very few trips that have taken place producing rays, a final whiting or two, strap conger, pout, dogfish, spurdog and a few small turbot.

This has been a very tough start to the 2018 for everyone involved in the UK angling scene. There must be many of you who have already experienced cancellations an must wonder if you will ever be able to go to sea again.

Skippers have used this unfishable weather to prepare their vessels in readiness for a much hoped for improvement in conditions. Our beloved Facebook postings show the port’s newly polished and anti-fouled vessels being gently lowered back into the sea at Portland.

The forecast for Weymouth today, Sun 18th March as I write, is awful with 25 to 32 mph easterly winds and 0 or -1 degree temperatures but there is a bit of hope for mid week with winds easing to light northwesterlies and the temperatures leaping up to 4 to 7 degrees! Maybe some of you will go to sea…let’s hope so.

April is now upon us. It seems an impossible task to predict what will be caught because of the ever changing weather so I refer to past years in the hope that some of this may allow some degree of accuracy in what might be caught.

The British are famous for the ‘stiff upper lip’ and pulling together in the face of adversity. Those qualities are certainly required now in the face of everything being thrown at the Charter Boat industry, both natural as in the weather and manmade as in the grossly unfair restrictions being imposed on Recreational Angling.

This is indeed a testing time and a time when the skippers really do appreciate your support and custom.

The 11th RNLI Annual Fishing Open Dr. John O’Connor

The 11th RNLI Annual Fishing Open, organised by members from Pembroke & District Angling Club, Osprey Sea Angling Club and Saundersfoot Sea Angling Club, was held on Sunday 18th February 2018 on Amroth beach in South Pembrokeshire. This year, despite the weather producing a drizzly day but not as bad as was forecast, attendance was quite good at 73 which included 3 Ladies & 4 Juniors (2 boys and 2 girls). However, despite what looked like excellent sea conditions, catches were fairly poor, but in fact better than 2017, with 11 Flounder and 6 Five Beard Rockling weighed in by 15 anglers compared to 14 sizeable fish by 13 out of the 84 anglers, but again only 1 angler managed to weigh 2 fish the other 14 having just one.

The winning angler, who managed to land the 2 Flounder for 675gms, was again this year a local rod from Tenby, this time Gareth Protheroe, netting him the first prize of £200. Second, who had the biggest fish, also a Flounder of 590gms, allowing him to pick up the runner’s up prize of £100, was Andrew Wilson from Pontardulais but a Saundersfoot Club angler. In third place was another local angler, Hughie Sweeney, a veteran from the Pembroke Club with a Flounder just 60 grams lighter at 530gms, winning him £50. Also, this year both a Lady and a Junior managed to weigh in, a Flounder of 335gms for Jaden Brinn, netting him the junior prize and a Rockling of 65gms netting June Howell the Ladies prize. The Pair’s Competition was won by one of only 2 pairs both to weigh in, as stipulated on the poster, both visiting rods,

Chris Isaac and Barry Beatrup, with a Flounder and a Rockling for 405gms, with 2 other visitors, Dai Loder and Neil Evans in second with 2 Rockling for 110gms.

However, the most important result on the day was that the event raised £615, for the local lifeboats.

Caterers Called On To Take Wild Sea Bass Off The Menu Angling Trust

The Angling Trust has written to the British Hospitality Association calling on it to make sure its members aren’t supporting illegal fishing by selling or serving protected spawning sea bass in February and March.

A ban was introduced by the EU on February 1st this year to protect wild bass when they come together to spawn and are particularly vulnerable to fishing.

The spawning stock of bass in northern European waters has declined by twothirds since 2010.

Unfortunately, despite the ban on bass being landed, members of the public have reported fresh wild bass from northern European waters being sold by fishmongers and restaurants in February.

As a result, the Angling Trust is raising awareness of the ban with the catering industry in the UK. In a letter, the Angling Trust has called on the British Hospitality Association to inform its members that the buying or selling of fresh wild northern sea bass in February and March risks supporting illegal landings of a stock which is so threatened that it may not be able

regenerate itself for an extended period.

Members of the public can help by informing any restaurants or retailers selling wild bass from northern European waters that the fish they are selling or serving in February and March has been landed illegally. In order to support the campaign the Angling Trust’s partner, Save Our Sea Bass, has set up a Facebook group, Sea Bass – Prohibited Species, for members of the public to report incidences of wild bass being sold during the closed period during February and March.

David Mitchell, Head of Marine at the Angling Trust, said: “Retailers and caterers may not be aware of the ban on landing any bass during February and March this year. We are trying to help raise awareness that any purchasing, selling or serving of wild bass during these months risks supporting illegal fishing as well as threatening the future of the stock. The catering industry can play an important role in cutting out demand for illegal landings of bass and helping to inform consumers about regulations put in place to prevent wild sea bass being removed from menus permanently.

The National Teams and Competition Group are seeking further England Applications for the Ladies, Youth and Masters (new category) teams to compete in the FIPS-M World Shore Championships this year. Unfortunately, there has been a decline on applications received for these categories and in order to send full squads the Angling Trust would need to receive more applications. The closing date for entries is 5th May 2018. Anyone interested in applying must have individual membership of the Angling Trust.

The Angling Trust is also seeking applications from anyone interested in taking part in the 2019 World Ladies Shore Championship, the 2019 World Shore Pairs Championship and the Masters Shore Championship all taking part in the World Games in South Africa. The closing date for entries is 5th May 2018.

Anyone interested in applying must have individual membership of the Angling Trust.

There have been no FIPS-M World Clubs teams that have applied for the 2018 World Championship, however if any member clubs in affiliation as membership to the Angling Trust wish to apply then they may be considered for the World Club Championship in Catanzaro, Italy from 19th – 26th May 2018.

Sea Anglers Demand Fair Deal in new Fisheries Bill The Angling Trust has called on the government to give sea angling a fair deal ahead of the publication of a white paper setting out proposals for a new UK fisheries bill.

In a briefing sent to the Fisheries Minister, George Eustice, the Trust has urged the government to follow the example of other countries and recognise the potential of developing world-class recreational fishing in the UK now that the country will no longer be constrained by the EU Common Fisheries Policy.

Approximately one million members of the public spend well over £2bn annually on sea angling in the UK, supporting tens of thousands of livelihoods, many in deprived coastal communities. English sea anglers pay as much into the Treasury as the entire value of English commercial fishing landings, for which they receive no acknowledgement or proper consideration in terms of resource allocation.

The Trust wants to see management objectives, or recreational fishery development goals, which support and grow recreational angling. An example of this from overseas is in the USA where recreational fishing for striped bass has been allowed to thrive as the major stakeholder in the fishery and is now valued at a staggering $6.5bn supporting an estimated 63,000 jobs.

Measures designed to support and develop angling, such as the restored presence and abundance of the UK’s inshore fish stocks, with naturally occurring age structures, including mature, adult, fish would motivate the angling public to fish more often and spend more money supporting coastal communities and businesses throughout the UK. The government’s objective of fishing at ‘maximum sustainable yield’ isn’t, on its own, a suitable objective for stocks most valuable to members of the public fishing with rod and line.

Peg 13 proved a winning draw for match organiser, Richard Burrow, who landed two codling on his first cast, adding five more plus a whiting to lug and creeper fished hard on the seabed. Promising youngster, Daniel Parker, won Zone B for runner-up place and Steve Bonner’s 4th place was enough to retain his series lead.

Reigning champion John Waugh finished in 7th place but won the flatfish pool with the best flounder of the match at 480 gms (weight conversion).

Despite the evidence of the importance of recreational fishing to people, communities and the economy, Defra still focuses its efforts on managing stocks wholly for commercial fishing, excluding the recreational sea angling sector from participating equitably in the process of formulating management policy or management measures. Recreational angling nearly always gets overlooked in government policies about marine fisheries.

David Mitchell, the Angling Trust’s Head of Marine, said: “There’s no reason why the UK couldn’t follow the path of the USA, New Zealand and Australia, to name a few countries, and officially recognise that the public, many of whom fish for their own pleasure or personal consumption, are, as well as being the owners of public fishery resources, also the major economic players in many fisheries and must be considered on an equal footing with commercial fishing in the management of publicly-owned fish stocks. The evidence in support of this is overwhelming. The only thing holding this back is a lack of political courage to make it happen.”

In a number of recommendations, the Trust is calling on the government to recognise the public’s right to access publicly-owned fish stocks and to allocate fishing opportunities based on the social, economic and environmental benefits to society, based on the principle of ‘optimal utilisation’.

Evidence already exists that for some stocks members of the public fishing recreationally delivers the optimal use of the resource generating the highest economic and employment benefits and contributing the lowest biological impact on stocks. This evidence now needs to be acted on and turned into policy so that the government’s objectives of leaving the environment in a better condition for the next generation and regenerating coastal communities can be delivered.

Catch & Release record broken twice in one day.

On Friday 16th February Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a recreational charter boat trip aboard Dick Peckham’s boat “Strongbow” out of Poole.

It was a cold, frosty and sunny morning with light winds and 5 club members hoped to have a good day’s fishing. The first spot started of well with a number of pouting and dogfish coming aboard. After a couple of hours we moved 3 miles out to a deep mark just by a wreck hoping for big fish.

Soon after dropping anchor Paul IbbersonGroves was into a big spurdog which sadly he lost. Then Dick caught a good size spurdog which when landed weighed 19lbs 10oz and broke the catch and release record.

Malcolm Stote landed a double shot of a whiting and a thornback ray of 8lb 7.5oz.

Then Roland Blomfield caught a spurdog weighing 21lbs 5oz which was a new catch and release record. As the tide turned catches of whiting, dogfish and conger eels of 20lbs plus were being caught.

When the tide started to run Roland Blomfield caught an undulate ray of 14lbs 2oz.

We then moved closer inshore to a ray mark off Old Harry’s rock’s. The first fish aboard was a plaice of 1lb 13oz caught

by Roland. Then Dick Peckham caught a blonde ray of 4lb 8oz and Paul a small eyed ray of 7lb 1oz.

There is a photo of a rock which at one point was a spurdog then it was a ray. Dick was ready with the net but alas it was still skillfully landed by Roland. It may not feature in his report but l think it is worth a mention. {He didn’t} It made us laugh any way so we nicknamed it Rolly’s Rock.

On the day 11 different species were caught spurdogs, undulate rays, small eyed rays, blonde rays, thornback rays, conger eels, dogfish, whiting, pouting, smoothhound and plaice.

Only edible fish were retained. All others were put back into the sea.

Southern League Opens Round 2

Here is the report of our latest match which was a Shallow Boats comp held on Sunday 18th February.

The SLO had it's second competition of 2018 at Highcliffe Sponsored by Lonis Angling on Saturday the 17th of Feb from 7pm until 12pm. 77 anglers fished in 4 zones with 74 anglers catching fish. The sizeable fish consisted of 2 flounders, 123 whiting, 74 Pout, 1 SE Ray, 1 Undulate, 2 Bass and 84 Rockling. The Winner of the match was Matthew Ashbridge with 13lb 15oz from peg 29 consisting of one Undulate,2 pout, a whiting and 1 topup.

Second was Chris Clark on peg 86 with 7lb 11oz 8dr consisting of 2 rockling, 3 pout and 12 whiting with 19 topups.

Third place was Paul Phillips with SE Ray, 1 pout and 3 topups for 5lb 8oz 8dr.

This time 12 members managed to get out on a much calmer day with 5 weighing in 34 fish for 16k 650gms. Species were Pout, Whiting & Dogfish with the best fish being a nice Dogfish of 1k 080gms caught

by Adrian Groves.

Kings Arms Junior S.A.C. (Previously Warren S.A.C) The juniors fished the Town Quay, Southampton and the only fish a Blenny was caught by 3 year old Logan Bellard.

The Juniors presentation for 2017 was held at the Kings Arms.

On Monday evening 26th February Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a Shingle Bank League competition.

The weather on the night was bitterly cold with a temperature of – 4 and a light north east wind which left the sea flat, calm and with clear waters.

9 club members signed on and 3 weighted in fish consisting of whiting, pouting and rockling. As it was so cold the competition was shortened to 2.5 hours.

Results.

1st Terry Kempton 2 fish for 9.2oz, 2nd Gavin Sloper 1 fish for 5.6oz 3rd Keith Panks 1 fish for 3oz.
