MASSIVE STINGER LANDED ON CHESIL BEACH

CHESIL BEACH REPORT SEE PAGE 25 SIMON HART MP TRIES OUT PEMBROKESHIRE'S BASS FISHING WITH LOCAL EXPERT Shortly before the General Election the Angling Trust, as the sport's national governing body, acknowledged the 'sterling work' of seven MPs from the Conservative, Labour and LibDem parties in pressing for measures to save threatened bass stocks. Among them was Pembrokeshire MP Simon Hart who last week met up with local bass guide Matt Powell to try his hand at bass fishing in his constituency. Simon was accompanied by the Angling Trust's National Campaign Coordinator Martin Salter. Matt Powell, who runs Fishing and Foraging Wales took them to one of his favourite bass marks in the south of the county and very quickly they found some fish by casting lures into the surf and over the edge of some rocky gullies. Five fish were landed in all and several more escaped or turned away from the lures at the last moment. Simon Hart said: "I have caught many species of fish but bass is not one of them, which is bit of an oversight considering that I live in one of the best bass fishing spots in the UK! It was a real delight to learn from an expert like Matt and it has served to reinforce my determination to do what I can to protect and promote this wonderful species." Matt Powell added: "It was great to have an opportunity to meet with Simon and show him the fantastic potential of the bass fishing that we have available here in Pembrokeshire. However, this precious resource needs careful protection as bass stocks across Europe are in trouble. That's why it's important that our politicians understand why we are so passionate about the conservation of these beautiful sporting fish." Angling Trust Campaigns Chief Martin Salter said:

"Without the strong political support from MPs like Simon Hart we would not have got the UK government to propose the recent EU winter trawling ban on bass spawning aggregations nor would we have won an increase in the bass minimum landing sizes from 36 to 42 cms which has been a demand of anglers for the last 15 years. However, there is much more that needs to be done including getting far greater protection for our inshore habitat and estuaries as well as better enforcement of the rules governing illegal netting."
