SOUTH VS WEST IN THE BATTLE OF THE BIG FISH WINNER

Avid SAN reader Kevin Reay caught this record breaking 24lb 8oz Spurdog whilst fishing on a Weymouth based charter boat. After a quick photo this magnificent specimen was released to fight another day.

Jed Grears of plough SAC bagged this belly busting 36lb 7oz cod using a lug and squid cocktail aboard Watchet based charter boat Real Deal skippered by Dan Hawkins. The fish was released unharmed.

On Thursday 18th February Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a Junior Winter League competition at Avon beach. The weather on the night was dry but cold. Species caught included whiting, pout and rockling. Four club members signed on and all four caught fish. The best fish of the competition was a whiting of 26cms, and three of the four all managed to catch a whiting of the same size. They were Oliver and Robert Savin and Max Munden.

Results: 1st Oliver Savin 213cm 2nd Flora Munden 79cm.

3rd Robert Savin 65cm.

4th Max Munden 49cm.

The optional pool for best round fish was a whiting of 26cm shared by Robert and Oliver Savin and Max Munden.

THAMES ESTUARY REPORT

A lean few weeks since our last report and when we have been able to get out when the weather has allowed there has been very few cod to catch with the odd one here and there, however in the last few days there has been a definite improvement with some boats catching between twenty and thirty rays.

A few more whiting also showing up and one or two codling per trip but that’s it so if its cod you want in numbers it’s not happening here in the Thames estuary.

It will I am sure of that and it should be a good spring run but nothing will surprise me this year it really has been one to forget.

Some of our local fishing boats with drift gear have been catching some very nice cod but nearly all of the fish have been caught in the top part of the net indicating the fish are still feeding off the bottom, also interestingly catching some very nice place perhaps it might be worth a go for them if i can persuade my anglers to ditch the heavy cod rigs and down size hooks etc but anglers in our part of the world are very set in their ways sometimes experimenting can bring surprises and set trends.

The river black water is devoid of life so if your offered the chance to fish in there my advice would be don’t let any skippers talk you in to it not yet any way.

So I am sorry this is a short report but hopefully next month I will be able to fill a whole page.

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE

Well a combination of the recent dire weather we’ve been experiencing and general slow-down in the fishing which we usually get as we go into February has left me scratching around in terms of this months’ report. I guess the one exception to the rule has been the early ray fishing and in particular the spotteds.

I don’t think I will be giving away any trade secrets if I was to say that Devon’s own mini Chesil is the place to go for the spotteds on the right conditions, with Beesands being the prime venue over the low water period. Local angler Gary Mitchell got the ball rolling with a cracking spottie of exactly 6lb that was released after weighing.

Pat Fulton of Castaways SAC also weighed-in a cracker of 6-8 whilst Will Ansari also registered a good one of 6-14. Finally Ray Bryce of Pot Black SAC landed a nice spottie of 6-1 which was a new PB and was released after weighing on certified scales. Not to be outdone fellow club member and local tackle shop owner Rob Hobbs weighed in a superb early season SE Ray of 10-15 which again was released after weighing.

Despite having gone out with the intention of targeting the rays, Andy Webb and Lee Treeby of Rodbenders SAC found bullhuss in the feeding mood on one of their south coast ray marks with the pair landing a number of fish to a top weight of 13-2 and losing one or two larger specimens. In between writing reports I managed to get out myself recently and found the huss in a feeding mood although the overall size was quite small. A live rockling cast back out as bait did manage to entice a nice huss that looked into double figures but unfortunately being on my own I wasn’t able to secure the fish due to the swell – no fish is ever worth your life. Over the coming months the huss fishing should steadily improve with any of the rock marks being worth a go. Inner and Outer Frowards Point at the mouth of the Dart is definitely worth a go for a large huss as are the various rock marks around Scabbacombe Head.

With February shortly giving way to March many anglers will soon be turning their attention to the plaice and whilst many will be making the pilgrimage up to Chesil there is still just as good a chance to latch into a decent one at the various rock marks around the South

Hams. In particular the rock ledges between East Portlemouth and the mouth of the Salcombe Estuary will produce plaice as well as decent thornback ray.

Another popular spot on the western sides of the estuary are the ledges at Starehole Bay. Robs Tackle and Bait month long flounder comp was won by Steve Wilkinson with a nice flounder of 3-3, with Rob Batten coming second with a 3-2 and John Brownlow third with a 2-8. Alfie Cruse won the junior section with a beauty of 3-3.5.

A total of 79 anglers and 7 juniors fished the month long Seaview Whiting Comp. Ben Luscombe took first prize with a whiting of 900g followed by Andrew Olliman with a fish of 575g and third Piran Stark with one of 500g. The junior section was won by Charley Stanley with one of 230g.

Finally with an all too brief window in the weather Malc Jones managed to get Sea Angler 2 out over the wrecks, with a party of anglers from Seafarers SAC landing a good number of Pollack to a top weight of 17lb.

The ‘Fishing for Life’ National Angling Strategy was published by the Angling Trust in November 2012 with the support of the Environment Agency and informed by the national surveys undertaken by the research company Substance. The strategy was also partly underpinned by the ‘Fishing for Answers’ report, published by Substance in January 2012, to which the Angling Trades Association and the Angling Trust were significant contributors. The new MoU both embraces the sentiments of this strategy and uses the detail to frame the actions to be undertaken.

Exciting developments following on from a number of discussions have resulted in the recent announcement that the Angling Trades Association (ATA) and the Angling Trust (AT) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The strategic aim of this collaboration is to secure a sustainable future for angling by recruiting and retaining more anglers, campaigning to protect and improve fish stocks and the rights of anglers to fish for them and thereby generating more customers for the trade.

EAST SUSSEX DIARY

By Kevin Morgan THE RAILWAY The first match of 2016 was fished on Sunday 10th January with a good turnout in nice conditions. The winner was Joe Plumstead with 11lb 12oz of mainly whiting. Second was Phil Metcalf with 10lb 11oz and third Jason Anderson with 10lb 6oz. The heaviest flat was a 5oz dab for Gary Windeat and the heaviest round a 14oz whiting for Fred Puttick.

The second match was fished on 24th January and the winner was Fred Puttick with 2lb 11oz, second Ken Filtness with 2lb 6oz and third Mat Brown with 2lb 4oz. Heaviest round was a whiting of 7 ½ oz for Karl Puttick and the heaviest flat flounders of 11oz for both Jason Anderson and Mike Adamson.

PEVENSEY BAY FISHING CLUB On Sunday 24th January The first club match was fished in Pevensey Bay. The winner with a mixed bag 6lb 9 ½ oz was Tony Kirrage. Second Malcolm Payne with mainly flounders for 6lb 5oz. Third Paul Christopher with 5lb 12oz and fourth Colin Isaacs with 5lb 10 ½ oz. The heaviest round was a whiting of 14 ½ oz for Tony Kirrage and the heaviest flat a flounder of 1lb 3oz for Malcolm Payne.

The annual PBAC OPEN was held on Sunday 14th February with 56 pegs, 28 in Pevensey Bay and 28 at Billy’s Tower. The winner from peg 1 was Sam Samsom with a total of 5lb 10 ½ oz including whiting flounder and dabs. Second was Tony Bush with 5lb ½ oz. Third Mike Perfect with 4lb 14 ¾ oz and fourth Colin Isaacs with 4lb 13 ½ oz. Section winners were ZONE A 1st Sam Samsom 5lb 10 ½ oz, 2nd Mike Perfect 4lb 14 ¾ oz, 3rd Colin Isaacs 4lb 13 ½ oz.

ZONE B 1st Tony Bush 5lb ½ oz, 2nd Terry Taylor 4lb 10 ½ oz, 3rd Joe Plumstead 4lb 1 ½ oz.

The heaviest flat was a flounder of 1lb 2oz for Sam Samsom and the heaviest round a whiting of 12oz for Richard Cleal. The pairs winners were Sam Samson and Mick Tims with 8lb ½ oz and the runners up were Gerald Sargeant and Paul Christopher with 7lb 15oz.

ANDERIDA The first match of the new season was held on Thursday 21st January, in cold conditions fishing was slow with a few whiting, founder and dabs showing.

The winner was Glyn Morgan with 2lb 3oz, second Keith Bean with 1lb 10 ½ oz and third Martin Payne with 1lb 8 ½ oz. The heaviest flat was a flounder of 11oz for Gary Banfield and the heaviest round a whiting of 7 ½ oz for Martin Payne.

The second match was on Tuesday 9th February and the winner was Colin Isaacs with a mixed bag of whiting, dabs, flounder and a dogfish for 3lb 8 ¾ oz. Second was Ian Hopper with 3lb ½ oz and third Darren Mitchell with 2lb 9 ¾ oz. The heaviest flat was a nice flounder of 1lb 3 ½ oz for David Tame and the heaviest round was a dogfish of 1lb 2oz for Colin

Isaccs.

THE EASTBOURNE NOMADS On Sunday 10th January a members only match was held at Langney Point in rough windy conditions. The winner from peg 32 was Dan Wood wit 8lb 11oz 12dr.

Second Paul Parsons from peg 21 with 8lb 5oz 12dr.

Third Regan Stanton from peg 6 with 7lb 15oz and fourth Tony Kirrage with 7lb 12oz from peg 7. The heaviest round was a dogfish of 1lb 11oz and the flat a flounder of 9oz 8dr both caught by Regan Stanton.

The 1st Slater Cup was fished on Wednesday January 20th at Langney Point with Trevor Rooney catching 12 fish for 4lb 12oz. Second was Keith Erridge with 3lb 10oz 4dr and third Malcolm Payne with 3lb 7oz 4dr. The heaviest flat was a flounder of 9oz for Neil Marshall and the heaviest round a whiting of 15oz 12dr for Keith Erridge.

The second Slater Cup was fished on Monday January 25th with Keith Erridge winning with a weight of 6lb 11oz 4dr. Second Tony Kirrage with 6lb 3oz 4 dr and third Dan Wood with 4lb 14oz 4dr. The heaviest flat was a sole of 15oz 4dr and the heaviest round a dogfish of 1lb 14oz both caught by Dan Wood.

OVER FIFTIES The first over fifties match of 2016 wa fished on Wednesday January 13th at Whitehorses. The winner was Gary Hazelgrove with 8lb 11 ½ oz. Second Tony Kirrage with 8lb 1 ¾ oz, third Malcolm Payne with 7lb 15oz and fourth Gerald Sargeant with 7lb 1 ¼ oz.

The heaviest round was a whiting of 12 ¼ oz for Tony Kirrage. The heaviest flat was a flounder of 1lb 2oz for Mike Perfect.

The second match also held at Whitehorses was again won by Gary Hazelgrove with 4lb 5 ¼ oz. Second Norman Message with 3lb 7 ½ oz. Third Mike Perfect with 3lb 4 ½ oz and fourth Tony Rose with 2lb 12 ¼ oz. The heaviest round was a pout of 15oz for Gary Hazelgrove and the heaviest flat a flounder of 13 ½ oz for Mike Perfect.

The third match was fished at Billy’s Tower on Thursday 11th February with Les Glazzard winning with 4lb 1 ¼ oz. Second Tony Bush with 7lb ¼ oz, third Trevor Rooney with 3lb 5 ¼ oz and fourth Norman Message with 3lb 2 ½ oz. The heaviest flat was a flounder of 1lb ½ oz for Trevoir Rooney and the heaviest round a pout of 13 ¼ oz for Tony Bush.

GENERAL Some plaice are already starting to show with some around 12oz+ being caught as well as plenty of small dabs from the shore at the moment. The boats have rarely put to sea but when they can some nice cod and Pollack have been caught. A superb cod of 40lb 13oz was caught by John Povaos on Deep Blue on January 19th weighed at Tony’s Tackle.

PLENTY OF PARKING

Although we have mostly been kept in port with the weather over the last few weeks I’ve managed a couple of trips out to see what is biting. The banks are fishing well offshore with our first 20lb spur of the year hitting the deck (catch and release style) and a steady stream of congers rays and huss too. As well as the usual blonde rays we have been getting a lot of undulates and thornbacks , a welcome addition to what is sometimes a quiet time of year. We have pretty much

seen the last of the cod now inshore for this winter season, a decent number landed but perhaps not to the usual size we are used to at this time of year. Looking forward to getting back out on the wrecks in search of the first of the years pollack in the coming weeks, providing we get some better weather.

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins As the winter rolls on we have now got to the letter ‘I’ (Imogen) in the alphabet for naming the winter gales and this one was the worst of the lot so far. The offshore banks have produced some good catches of Spurdogs and Rays on the occasions we have managed to venture that far. The inshore whiting fishing through January produced some very good catches mixed with the odd Cod, plenty of Congers and Rays. Ian Napier fishing aboard the Mistress Linda landed a Conger of 65lb after a 20 minute fight in shallow water on light gear. The catch of the moment was caught by a local nets man fishing just south of Bournemouth Pier when hauling his nets he found a large Porbeagle shark entangled in it, almost unknown for this time of year. In Poole Harbour the Flounder fishing has been spectacular late January early February with some boats managing 50+ per day thankfully most are being returned.

The Southern IFCA Recreational Angling Sector Group met on the 27th January 2016. The meeting was dominated by a discussion about the bass management measures introduced by the European Commission which now mean that there is now a catch and release only recreational fishery until the 30th of June 2016.

The group discussed how Southern IFCA, alongside the Marine Management Organisation, is now required to implement the measures.

The recreational anglers on the Recreational Angling Sector Group felt strongly that whilst they generally supporting the increased minimum legal size and last year’s catch limit (as part of the overall package aimed at achieving a recovery of bass stocks), the 2016 increase in commercial allowance for fixed netting sector mean that many anglers feel their allowance (or lack thereof) unfair. The group agreed that this is a difficult place from which to develop the aim with any regulation; to develop a culture of voluntary compliance. Notwithstanding this difficult starting point, and recognising that this is an ‘emergency’, Southern IFCA explained their compliance strategy which is focussed upon the ultimate aim of the regulation: to reduce mortality and the group discussed how, using the IFCAs ‘risk based approach’, the IFCA resources will continued to be deployed in a proportionate way to the risk to the stocks. The group

urged the IFCA to focus their limited resources on unlicensed illegal fishing.

The group heard how the Southern IFCA, like all other IFCAs in England, are working to achieve the domestic reform of the management of commercial fisheries in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Although often not perceived to be a ‘recreational issue’ effective management of Marine protected Areas achieves benefits for all users. Measures introduced by Southern IFCA mean that large areas of our nearshore seabed habitats are better protected: in Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight, large areas of seagrass and reef communities are now managed, through byelaw, from damaging fishing activities, and the IFCA is working on a wider suite of measures to better manage fishing activity in estuarine environments.

The habitats protected in the Marine Protected Area network are the very basis of our coastal ecosystems and themselves the nursery areas for a wide variety of recreationally and commercially important fish. Recent work by Siân Rees et al. from Plymouth University, CEFAS and the Marine Biological Association demonstrates that the measures introduced in the Lyme Bay Marine Protected Area have, for example, benefitted a wide range of recreational users within the MPA area. Although, not immediately perceived to be an issue relevant to the bass debate, the measures will support the future management of these stocks by protecting the habitats on which the juvenile fish depend. There are many challenges for inshore fisheries management yet to come, and the developing dialogue and relationship between Southern IFCA and The Recreational Angling Sector Group remains important in realising these opportunities.

As we start to look ahead towards the approach of spring the 1st run of Plaice followed by the Black Bream in Poole Bay will soon be here, reports from commercial operators is that they are already catching lots of small Plaice , this usually happens about 3 weeks before anglers start to catch them in numbers.

Offshore the wrecks and deep water marks will start to produce Pollack, boats venturing to the west will be targeting the highly prestigious Turbot and Brill.

FLATTIE FANTASTIC! Nine Club members of Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club took advantage of the unseasonably mild weather to continue the hunt for flounders in Poole harbour aboard ‘Strongbow’ skippered by Dick Peckham on the 24th of January.

A good crowed gathered to see all our awards handed out from last year. The evening started with a great talk from Mark Criddle of the RNLI at Torbay, Mark showed us all what happens when the lifeboat is called out on a shout. This was followed by the awards to all the winner with some 100 presentations being made.

At the end of the night a free buffet was put on for all to enjoy.

Following on from the Club’s success two weeks previous (where a good number of 2lb plus fish were taken, including a new Club record taken by Jamie Munden at 3lb 3oz), members continued to enjoy fast and furious sport on the outer reaches of the harbour.

In total 30 flounders, as well as eels, bass and scorpion fish were landed, with the majority of the flounders of a good size and in superb condition.

Top tactics included static & popped up rigs, as well as slowly retrieved spoons baited with ragworm- a very exciting method as the founders were seen chasing the bait to the surface on several occasions.

All the awards were made by Mark Criddle. The picture shows winner the Castle Trophy winner Bobby Drew of Teignmouth SAS who caught a shore caught Pollack of 11lb 12oz, this was the best fish caught in the year. The other picture shows juniors Ciaran Farley (R) and Maitland Criddle (L) who won the the best Junior fish from boat and Shore. Maitland had a boat Conger Eel of 53lb 9oz and Ciaran had a Shore caught Three Bearded Rockling of 1lb 9oz.

Shirley SAC Poole Dolphins SAC We had a Home Shore comp at Holes Bay Friday 22/01/16. The forecast was right for once with rain most of the day dying out in the afternoon to leave a dry night with next to no wind. Bites were hard to come by with baits coming back in practically untouched, A few crabs were taking the odd hook bait but very little else. Star on the night was junior Curtis Driver ( aged 9 ) catching two Flounder and a Rockling for 93cm winning the Junior Section.

Showing ever one how its done including his Dad who couldn't catch a cold fishing next to him. Brian Read won the senior section with a nice flounder of 38cm. A good number of members fished along the cycle path with very little coming in but a few fish were caught by independent anglers at either end of where we were fishing. Hard to put a finger on exactly why? using same bait, similar rigs and tactics, just being in the right place at the right time. Most unlucky angler on the night was Simon Holloway who stayed on after the comp to fish a little longer had his rod bent round after the end of the comp to land a cracking Flounder of 2lb 12oz. This would of won the senior section on the night but was 15minutes too late. Surprising when the tide had dropped and the water was running out. Well done to ever one who turned out to brave the elements on what was a very windy night after postponing the comp 24hrs because of the weather.

Members fished along the beach at low water with an incoming tide. Bites were a little slow with the wind rattling the rod tips making bite detection a problem.

Nigel Back romped to victory on the night with an impress 277cm all Whiting. Dave Draper came second with 182cm with a catch of Whiting, Bass and Smooth Hound. Second, Third and Forth places were only separated by one fish all very close. Whiting made up the majority of the nights catch with a few Bass and a Couple of Smooth Hound. www.fishingpoole.co.uk

Here is the result of our latest match which was to be a Shore at Calshot Beach on Sat 6th Feb but was turned into a Rover due to the gale force winds with many heading to the more sheltered waters up Southampton Water.

21 Members fished with 13 weighing in 140 fish for 24k 210gms. Species were Pout, Dogfish, Rockling, Cod & Whiting with the best fish being a Cod of 2k 500gms caught by Wayne Bulley.

Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club celebrate their 80th Anniversary

mentioned that only recently the club had lost one of its early members, Denis Curtis, who joined the club in 1947 and had been club secretary and treasurer and president over the years. ‘Members like him helped pave the way and I’m sure they would all be proud - as are we all - of the way the club has moved forward,’ Derek added. He thanked Jackie Saunders for organising the event and Shorefield for the use of the venue and lovely meal. He thanked all the committee members and officers for organising and running the numerous competitions, sections and leagues, thus ensuring that the club would continue into the future.

He thanked Garry Mann of Loni’s and Tom Bagnall of Christchurch Angling Centre for their continuing sponsorship. He explained that the club’s secretary, Georgina Moody, was unable to attend the evening due to the fact that she had been in the clubhouse all day, looking after the Angling Trust selection committee, who were using our clubhouse for their meeting. He said that Georgie, together with her daughter Sue, did a marvellous job, not only the secretarial work but all the other jobs they took on, with great efficiency. ‘This will be Georgie’s thirty-fifth year as our secretary,’ he proudly told the audience.

Following on from 2014, the past year had once again seen several club members representing their country at national and international levels. He congratulated the following on their success on the shore: Rhys Hayward (in the England Junior Shore Team that won gold in the Home International Shore Angling Championships held in Co. Wexford in July); Jaon Voller (in the Junior World Team in the FIPS-Mer World Championships in Holland, where he won an individual silver medal); Callum Graham and Toby Oldfield (in the England Youth Team.which won team silver, with Toby also in the Youth Home Team in Ireland, where they won a spectacular gold and Callum took an individual third place); Ollie Hopkins (in the England Adult World Team). On the boat angling scene the president was proud to say that the club had its first member, Steve Batchelor, to be called up to theTeam England World Boat Squad to fish in Ireland, who came away with a team silver. Praise also went to Malcolm Stote, who not only managed the England Youth Team but also personally fished the Home Internationals in Ireland, winning bronze, and was in the fifteen-man Sea Angling Match Federation Team that fished in Holland against Belgium and won. Two further club members David Graham and Chris Clark were mentioned too for their respective managerial roles in these events. He finished by wishing them all the best for the future.

In thanking Derek for his speech, chairman Alec Harmer reflected on how the club was started by a few enthusiastic anglers meeting at the Rising Sun at Wootton back in 1936. He tendered apologies from Cllr Jacquie England, who was to be their dinner guest, but unfortunately was unable to attend. He thanked Carol Moody for being the club’s newsletter editor for the past eleven years before stepping down from the role and invited her to present the trophies.

Collecting their trophies and prizes on the night were: Juniors Leo Chamberlain, Rhys Hayward, Ollie Savin and Ollie Warren (Ollie Warren is also the Angling Trust Wessex Region 2015 Junior Angler of the year and has won an award for the best specimen shore caught fish for 2015). Ladies Laura Blomfield. Men Robert Flicos, Paul Watson, Dick Peckham, Tim Clark, Alec Harmer, Malcolm Stote, Roland Blomfield,Keith Warren,Malcolm Gerrish and Adrian Moody.

The Clubmanship Award for services rendered by a club member during the year deservedly went to Robin Lane for organising both the match and recreational boat fishing trips from Lymington and Poole, and the popular tackle demonstration evenings held regularly at the clubhouse.

Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club’s 80th anniversary year got off to a good start with fifty-one members and guests attending the annual dinner and prize presentation at Shoreffield’s on the 6th February.

On Thursday 4th February Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a Shingle Bank League competition. For a change the weather was good with no wind which has not happened many times so far this year. The fishing was also good because 15 out of the 16 who signed on caught fish, which consisted of undulate ray, dogfish, pout, whiting and rockling. The best fish of the evening was an undulate ray weighing 14lbs 8.2ozs and caught by Gavin Sloper.

NWASAC Mersey Anglers Open, Otterspool Sat 13th Feb 2016 (48 rods) (Report by Ian Griffiths) After all the speculation of fishing Otterspool on a 9.6m tide and only four days after Storm Imogen had hit the UK, we were unsure how it would fish. As it happened, it fished better than anyone could have predicted, even though the weed did cause a problem to some anglers, The anglers started booking on from 8am on a cool Saturday morning with a moderate easterly wind and we all knew the higher pegs (Zone D )would fish a lot better than Zone A. With Billy Lindfield drawing peg 66 up by the pumping station he was in with a good chance of winning.

Out of the 48 anglers who booked on we had 42 match cards back, a 20cm measure and release format in place 734 fish were caught, 656 codling, 70 whiting, 5 flounders, 2 dabs, and 1 eel.

Ian Hooper landed the biggest cod from the North Devon Coast so far this winter a fine specimen scaling 18lb 6oz. The fish was tempted from a popular local mark on a peeler crab and squid cocktail. Kyle Blackmore fishing the same mark on the same night also enjoyed success landing a fine smoothound of 9lb. It is debatable whether the smoothound is an early visitor or a late leaver? Smoothound normally show from early May and leave our shores heading south for the winter months during October or November.

Finding quality fish along the coast this winter has been hard work and only those who put in the hours are likely to succeed. I visited a rock mark near Ilfracombe as heavy seas pounded the shoreline. We were rewarded with a few dogfish, small conger and a rockling. Despite the lack of success there is something special about being out there in the elements as the waves crash against the shoreline the rod tips a focus of optimism in the darkness of the winter night.

Combe Martin SAC member Ian Laird enjoyed a short session at a North Devon rock mark where he landed a small-eyed ray of 7lb 9oz along with a double figure conger and plenty of the inevitable dogfish that are showing in huge numbers from many marks. Ian Laird followed this catch up a few days later with a specimen conger of 25lb.

Kevin Legge triumphed in Combe Martin SAC’s specimen brace match at Clovelly where fish were

hard to find. A dogfish of 1lb 12oz combined with a 10oz whiting was sufficient to secure a narrow victory ahead of Matt Jeffery who landed an 11oz dab and a 7oz whiting. All who fished managed to land fish including dogfish, whiting, dab and shore rockling.

Thomas Atkinson won Appledore Shipbuilders monthly Rover with a dogfish weighing 2lb 2oz the only weighable fish brought to the scales by the nineteen competitors.

Taz Wotton secured top spot in Bideford and District Angling Clubs monthly Rover landing a specimen bull huss of 10lb 111/4oz. Nathan Clements was runner up with a dogfish of 1lb 151/2oz.

Cameron Atkinson fished a shore mark in Bideford Bay to land a specimen bull huss of 10lb 9oz whilst his brother Josh Atkinson landed a huss scaling 10lb 13oz.

The predominantly Westerly winds have made life difficult for Ilfracombe charter boats. When conditions have permitted John Barbeary has ventured out into the deep-water offshore with his charter boat Bluefin finding the spurdog packs on the feed along with goodsized conger and the occasional huss. David Atkinson landed a spurdog scaling 14lb 12oz and Josh Atkinson also enjoyed success landing a spurdog of 14lb. On another trip Ali Laird tempted a fine spurdog of 15lb one of over twenty brought into the boat including a 10lb 2oz spur for Ian’s young son Ollie.

ALDERNEY REPORT

By Mark Harding We’ve seen something of a transition with our shore angling over the last 3 weeks, we have moved away from the cartilaginous species we were catching to more delicious tasting fish! It adds to the spice and variety of angling here in Alderney. We have moved away from the Undulates and Tope, the Undulates though were still being caught at the start of this reporting period although the Tope have disappeared now. We’ve not had a report of a Small Eyed being caught neither but we are now getting some good numbers of Bass being caught with fish, in the main, between 2lb and 3lb 8oz landed. These are being caught mainly on worm baits targeted for other species and this has meant one or two bigger fish hooked have been lost so at this moment now as I write bigger baits are being presented to land those bigger ones now that we know they are there. The species being targeted though have been Sole and Red Mullet. With the Sole even being caught in daylight with have seen a smattering of 2lb fish – the magical 3lb barrier not being broken yet but who cares so long as the rod tip is rattling after the awful weather we have had! Bags of up to 8 fish in a session of Red Mullet too so we have had some fun here and of course some good eating fish! Also we have seen a few Plaice too, not many and not big fish – all around the pound mark and very welcome. Bream have been showing too, 3 types – Black and Couches with the latter becoming common here now and the odd Gilthead thrown in for good measure.

Plenty of Thick Lipped Mullet to target too with fish in the 3lb to 6lb bracket common. Nothing much bigger though.

By the time you read this we’ll be looking to welcome the first of the charter boats. Let’s hope the weather is on our side and we don’t reciprocate the cancellations of last year – the fishing was pretty good though so that CAN be reciprocated!!

Alderney Angling Shore League 2016 We’ve managed to get the 2016 League off and under away, two matches fished which is amazing given the weather until lately, the first one was the Heaviest Fish which the weather made conditions so difficult result wise, and then we followed it up with a fairly good match on Platte Saline with a longest length pegged match. Both reports below: Heaviest Fish Comp A bit of a damp squib this one but it’s one down and we’re off and running! Thanks to all those that turned out despite the weather and gave it a crack.

Conditions were best at the start and very quickly various rock marks filled, several having the idea to go and have a go for the Mullet at Doyle. For those that didn’t make it then it was plan B, either Pollack or Bass. Both species were difficult to find but the Mullet were a little easier. As darkness approached so the weather deteriorated which was compounded by the swell making conditions almost impossible on any exposed rock mark so another Quay match it was. Fishing continued to be difficult but rewards were there for most for sticking to the task in the form of points if not sport.

In the end Darren’s persistence early doors won the day with a bass he nearly lost to the incoming tide as he put the fish in rock pool which nearly got washed out. Mark was second by a whisker with James a full 2oz behind ;-).

with clear skies and no wind. 14 anglers turned out making it a fairly social comp, with most people having at least another angler close by to measure their fish and have a good chat.

As always in these matches, the peg draw has the potential to be crucial and with the two end pegs at each end of the beach being pulled out, it was always going to be interesting to see where the fish were holding. As it turns out, there were a couple of hotspots on the night, with Darren pulling out a steady stream of bass and red mullet at the reef end, a group of anglers in the middle of the beach catching well and Adam Salmon holding his own at the Doyle end.

At the end of 4.5 hours fishing there was a group of 7 anglers who had managed to break over the metre mark, with some cracking fish caught between them. Most notably a bass of 2lb 10oz for Michael Bohan (who is doing his best to avoid consecutive wooden spoon awards) and a bass of 3lb on the dot for James Clarke, which also took the pool for heaviest fish on the night. Well worth a mention though was a cracking Sole of 2lb 3oz for Norman Butel, which will be a difficult target to beat for the Smith/Johnson Flatfish trophy!

In the end though, there was one angler who stood head and shoulders above the rest on the night.

With a winning margin of 223cm, that was Darren Braby, which makes it 2 in 2 for the man on a mission!

GOVERNMENT PLANS FAIL TO PROTECT PLAN TO RESTRICT EXE ESTUARY ENGLAND’S RIVERS ACCESS IS SCRAPPED Plans published today setting out the future management of rivers, lakes and coastal waters in England are woefully unambitious and fail to tackle the main threats facing them, say WWF-UK and the Angling Trust. (1)

He continued: “If the government continues at this snail’s pace, it will take nearly a century to get most of our rivers healthy. This will be devastating for both the people and wildlife that rely on these special places.”

Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive, The Angling Trust & Fish Legal, said: “While these plans set out clearly the range and scale of the issues affecting rivers across the country, such as farm pollution, key effective solutions to tackle them are absent. Following our successful legal challenge last year, the government must now assess the use of targeted local regulations to make sure our most precious rivers and wetlands are protected and restored for the benefit of fish, wildlife, people and the rural economy.”

Currently, only 17% of water bodies, such as rivers and lakes (2) are at good health. The new targets released today by the Environment Agency show that by 2021 it intends only 21% to be healthy. This lowly ambition does not even get them back to where they were in 2009. (3)

Dominic Gogol, Water Policy Manager, WWF-UK, said: “By publishing such woefully unambitious plans, Ministers have squandered a huge opportunity.

The government’s own data shows that getting three quarters of rivers, lakes and wetlands to good health would boost the economy by £8.5 billion.”

In terms of the stresses facing our rivers, lakes and coastal waters, the plans show that farming is responsible for nearly a third of all pressures. This includes pollution running off farmland and taking too much water from already stressed rivers. (4) However, the government has failed to work with farmers to effectively tackle these issues whereas the water industry, also a big polluter and responsible for a quarter of all pressures, has had to take significant steps to address them. (5)

BIG DAY OUT FOR BASS AT PARLIAMENT: MPS BACK MOTION OVER UNFAIR RESTRICTIONS ON SEA ANGLERS North Cornwall MP Scott Mann today led a threehour backbench debate in the House of Commons to highlight the unfairness of the current bass measures on recreational sea anglers.

The debate was entitled: "Conservation of sea bass and the effect of related EU measures on the UK recreational fishing industry.”

Scott moved the motion which was agreed without dissent: “That this House believes that the recent EU restrictions on recreational sea bass fishing are unfair and fail to address the real threat to the future viability of UK sea bass stocks; and calls on the Government to make representations within the Council of the EU on the reconsideration of the imposition of those restrictions.”

The Angling Trust and their supporters have been lobbying MPs to attend this important parliamentary debate to speak in support of introducing revised measures that reduce bass mortality by restricting rather than increasing harmful commercial harvesting methods such as gill netting and instead promote sustainable methods such as hook and line fishing for both the commercial and recreational sectors.

Thousands of anglers are now at risk of criminalisation if they try to keep the self-same bass that a netsman is free to kill during the January to June moratorium.

The current situation cannot endure. The recreational bag limits are grossly unfair, they make a mockery of the law and fail to acknowledge that recreational sea angling is the most sustainable form of bass fishing which delivers the best economic return.

Introducing his debate, Scott Mann said:"I lead this debate on sea bass conservation not just as an MP, but as an angler.

"I see recreational sea anglers and fishermen as part of a collective community. Both need healthy fish stocks.

Both activities benefit the economy in different ways and in differing amounts and both have the same passion for catching fish. The current situation we find ourselves in is grossly unfair on anglers. Both fishermen and anglers want to see bass stocks preserved and grown, but one party shouldn’t have to suffer when they actually have very little impact on stocks.

"We need to have a different approach to this, and I hope my debate will highlight to the government why change is needed. It's only fitting that the source of these qualms for anglers is at the root of problems for

fishermen on a wider scale too - the EU." "The reaction I’ve had to securing this debate is amazing. Within hours I was getting emails from anglers around the country expressing their thanks and showing their support, and I'm honoured to be fighting for the angling community."

The vast majority of MPs who spoke were in favour of calls by the Angling Trust and the Bass Anglers' Sportfishing Society (BASS) for bass to be managed primarily as a recreational species alongside a sustainable hook and line commercial fishery. Many newly elected MPs highlighted the importance of recreational fishing and attacked the way that anglers had been treated as opposed to the exemptions handed out to the gill netters.

Replying for the government, environment minister Rory Stewart conceded that they may have to revisit commercial catch limits next year in order to comply with scientific advice. He also repeated the government's offer to work with recreational angling organisations on a long term management plan for bass which builds on the lessons of the recovery of the striped bass fishery in the USA where a greater proportion of the stock is reserved for recreational fishing.

Martin Salter, Angling Trust's National Campaigns chief, said: "The Angling Trust has put a huge amount of effort into getting this debate and briefing MPs so that they understand the genuine anger and frustration of recreational sea anglers at the appalling way they were treated last year by the EU fisheries ministers.

"We welcome the commitment from Rory Stewart on behalf of the government to revisit the commercial catch limits and to work with the recreational sector on a long term plan for bass, learning the lessons of proper professional fishery management from places like Ireland and the USA." Nigel Horsman, from BASS, added: "It was an excellent debate and really heartening to see so many MPs making the case for bass to be managed recreationally - a cause that we have been espousing for more than 20 years. The government now need to follow up their warm words with some practical action to rebuild bass stocks and properly recognise the economic value of recreational fishing."

The Angling Trust will be writing to thank all the MPs who spoke up for angling and to ask them to keep up the pressure on the government ahead of this year's European Council Ministers meeting in December.

Boat anglers on the River Exe can breathe a sigh of relief as a proposed Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) – a kind of spatially-defined ASBO restricting the use of a slipway into the estuary – has been kicked into touch.

East Devon District Council consulted local residents and users of the slipway on the introduction of the PSPO after complaints by local residents of anti-social behaviour by water craft users of Shelly Beach and Belshers slipway in Exmouth.

Anglers, spearheaded by the Angling Trust’s Wyvern Marine Region, responded to the consultation which could have seen the only slipway into the river closed.

Ninety four per cent of individuals responding to the consultation said that there would be a negative im-

pact on them if they were prevented from accessing and driving over to Shelly beach to launch craft. In the end the Council has concluded that there was little or no requirement for a PSPO. The introduction of a new harbour control vessel for the area is now being considered by the Council which will also be meeting local water craft users to draw up a code of conduct in order to deal with antisocial behaviour.

Belshers became the only access point to the river for angling boats after the slipway at Mamhead was closed. However, the Angling Trust understands that reconstruction of a new slipway at Mamhead will begin this April – good news for South Devon boat anglers.

IN IT TO WIN IT! The Angling Trades Association has welcomed the recent, successful House of Commons Debate on Bass, secured by Scott Mann (Conservative MP for North Cornwall and a sea angler). Now put your hand on your heart and ask yourself – did you really do your best as members of the angling trade, and as individual anglers, to add your voice and support the debate?

Historically, the factual value of recreational sea angling to the trade and the economy speak for themselves. The Drew Report into sea angling in 2003 stated that £538 million pounds was spent annually by 1.1 million sea anglers. The CEFAS report for Defra titled ‘Sea Angling 2012’ revealed that there were 884,000 recreational sea anglers in England, directly spending £1.23 billion per annum (£2.1 billion including induced and indirect impacts). After deductions for tax and imports, the direct annual expenditure was calculated to be £831 million. The VAT receipts received by the Treasury were £166 million p.a. and bass angling was calculated to be worth £200 million each year in England alone.

In 2015 the Blue Marine Foundation published a report ‘Defining the Economic & Environmental Values of Sea Bass’, focussing on Sussex. It revealed that sea anglers fishing in the county spent £31.3 million on tackle, charter boats and hotels, creating 353 full-time jobs whilst retaining just 15 tonnes of bass. In the latest ‘Tackle Trade Survey 2015’ published by the Angling Trades Association, which reported on research into the value of the UK sales of tackle and associated equipment (rods, reels, line, bait, lures, clothing and accessories), sea angling accounted for 10.63% of sales (£60.7 million of the total annual sales figure of £570.4 million).

So why are we in this position now? Naidre Werner,

Chair of the Angling Trades Association (ATA), thinks the answer is simple: ‘We aren’t shouting loudly enough, either as businesses working within the sector or as individual anglers.

We don’t need to get embroiled in a fight with the commercial fisherman - our immense value in numbers speaks out for itself. But what we do need to do is add our voices to the messages that the Angling Trust (AT), BASS and the European Anglers Alliance (EAA) are trying to get across.

‘It doesn’t matter what your personal opinion is of these organisations or their teams of people. The fact remains that the Angling Trust is the recognised National Governing Body for anglers in England and the EAA is the recognised body for anglers in Europe, and they are the organisations that are being invited to sit in front of the right people in Parliament (both in the UK and the EU) to put across our opinions.

‘Defra, Cefas and the Council of the EU have absolutely no interest in trawling fishing forums late at night to find ‘relevant’ comments and useful information written by ‘keyboard warriors’… I don’t blame them.’

Naidre continued: ‘So we need to be in it to win it - together. If as angling businesses and angling individuals we support the organisations that are there to represent our interests, then this will only add decibels to the noise we make.’

The scenario set by Adler & Allen involved a commercial aggregate vessel, such as might periodically transit the harbour (played for the exercise

by Brightingsea Harbour's Pilot Vessel), suffering a fire onboard which the ship's crew extinguished, but which resulted in injuries to those fighting the fire and one casualty in the water. The scenario then called for the vessel to strike a submerged object which punctured an onboard fuel tank resulting in a release of marine gas oil into Brightlingsea Creek. The vessel issued a May Day distress call that was received by Brightlingsea Harbour, which then put into place their planned response, calling on other emergency services and agencies for support.

Prior to the exercise only base line information about the incident was shared with the Brightlingsea Harbour team, with additional scenarios and objectives being added by both Adler & Allen and representatives from other organisations during the exercise. These additional scenarios included a road traffic incident delaying the arrival of equipment, members of the public entering the water to assist wildlife and becoming casualties, and an injury to a key member of the response team. In addition to these fictional scenarios the response team also had to contend with a real life surprise element in the form of a tidal surge above predicted height, which made effective deployment of equipment more challenging.

Overall the exercise was successful, with invaluable lessons learnt that will allow additions and improvements to be made to the Oil Spill Contingency Plan. The exercise allowed the Harbour team to gain valuable expertise to ensure a real life incident is handled as rapidly and efficiently as possible. Among the lessons learned were:

Amongst the elements of the exercise which were particularly praised by the assessors were: On scene communications between the incident command centre and on scene personnel The speed and efficiency of both the initial incident response and subsequent equipment deployment The high level of engagement by the emergency services and other agencies who were all well represented at the exercise The positive attitude of Brightlingsea Harbour's team and their commitment to learning and to evolving their major incident response plan Over the coming days each of the services and agencies involved in the exercise will produce a feedback report to Brightlingsea Harbour Commissioners for review and action as appropriate.

On conclusion of the event Jim Addison, Chairman of Brightlingsea Harbour Commissioners, noted, "It has been a most constructive and useful day for both Brightlingsea Harbour Authority and our partners in major incident control. It is only through exercises such as this that we can check and improve our plans for handling incidents and we have been very impressed by the work carried out by all parties today.

In particular, I would like to praise the Brightlingsea Harbour team who undertook this exercise in the wake of the recent sudden death of Harbour Master, Steve Chick. Postponing the exercise in light of Steve's death was considered, but the team, led by our newly-appointed Deputy Harbour Master, David Boughton, felt confident the event should go ahead. A decision that has been more than vindicated today."

Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association The last month has again been rather frustrating with the wind stopping boats getting out most weekends.

The once reliable XC Weather site seems to be all over the place making it even harder to find a window in the weather.

Three boats did manage to sneak out for a short trip over high water on 17th January for a winner takes all cod bash. Lucky Strike failed on the cod but had some thornies, straps, whiting and dogs. Four Buoys faired similar but Steve Saxby found 1 codling of just over 5lb. Pete Nicholson and Mark Bowden had a better time of it with 9 codling, the biggest of 9lb 4oz going to Pete with rays, whiting, dogs and straps making up the rest of their catch. If boats can get out then there are enough fish to make it worthwhile. Hopefully we will have a fresh run of spring codling and then the

bass will be just behind them so prospects are looking ok.

Fish of the month for January was won by Pete Nicholson with his cod of 9lb 4oz.

February 21st will be a re-run of our Presidents cup and in March we have the Wilf Dunstone Trophy on the 6th and the Vicoue Trophy on the 20th so hopefully this wind will start to ease and we all get to fish a competition.

Our next club meeting is on Thursday 17th March at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club.

Historically, this time of the year can prove hard work for the boat angler. Temperatures drop and the general feeding program seems so go into melt down. This year, however, the fish seem to be remaining active for a longer period. Offshore grounds are fishing very well when weather allows with spurdogs up to around the 20lb mark almost commonplace. Conger also surprisingly still very active with plenty of 20+ fish around in the deepwater gulleys along with bull huss and rays. On the cod scene, there have been a good number of doubles taken with several big fish over the 20lb mark. All the usual marks both offshore and inshore are quite capable of turning out a real lunker.

Though February usually marks the last of the big cod, I think this year it will drag out giving the ardent cod angler a real chance of that fish of a lifetime for some weeks to come yet! Sticking with those big

juicy lug and squid cocktails will probably give you the best chance. In the last few days, there have been some real cracking whiting taken from grounds close to Minehead with the best so far a fine fish of over 4lb. So all is not lost in the |Bristol Channel by a long way, If you fancy a last minute crack before its time to pack away your flotation suit, give us a ring and we will find a day for you!

On the boat front, I have now sold the “Alykat Too” to a Norwegian dive company which means I am back with my original Southcat “Alykat”. She is being refitted with brand new Yanmar diesels giving a total horsepower of 630bhp and a top speed of around 25kts!

By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle What a contrast this past month of February has been compared to January. Admittedly the weather has played its part with some outrageous unsettled bouts.

One day freezing sub zero Arctic blasts followed by crazy Atlantic gales and heavy rain fall that has dried up the enthusiasm of many. With less rod hours there's been less fish reported.

The steady stream of quality cod we were seeing during January eased up , but the numbers of smaller codlets or tumbling's as they were referred to years ago, have been making their presence felt throughout most parts of the channel. A great sign for the future for sure.

The bigger cod haven't dried right up as a few anglers have bagged some quality fish with James Trevett bagging a fantastic cod of 21lb13oz (see page 10) from the reefs near Hinkley point. Fishing with his brother Barry it was the only bite of the day, but there were no moans about that bit though.

West Coast Tackle / Angling owner and my boss Steve Liddel got stuck right into a very nice fat bellied beauty of 11lb8oz. Steve on a spare of the moment short 2 hour session fishing over low water near Watchet , persistence over the past months fishing the same spot finally paid off . It was a fine conditioned fish and it's given him great joy and the bragging rights on me, as I've failed to find a double so far this winter.

Ian Preater has also found a few better cod with fish of 7-9lb on the low water reef marks.

Minehead angler Lloyd Creech finally got rewarded after putting in many sessions over the past few months with a fine condition cod of 8lb12oz from Minehead.

Dawlish angler Gary Whittle found some quality cod on a trip up to the ledges at Ladye bay with fish up to 8lb. This area around Clevedon has been spoiling local angler this year with regular catches being made.

The good old thornback Ray has continued to give some good sport along the reef marks around Hinkley point and Weston and has made an ideal target species if the cod are being a bit elusive.

The prospects for the coming month are positive with some great Spring codling on the cards from many of the normal haunts. Crab baits along with worm baits will give the edge as will be being in the right place at the right time.

Bull Huss will figure in catch in the Bossington and Porlock area and down into the North Devon rock marks.

With a bit of luck we will get some better settled weather this coming month with a sprinkle of early warm spring sunshine.

That's about it this month, I hope you all get stuck into some decent fish.

The fortunate thing is that the inshore marks are still fishing ok, not as productive as they were mid season but for the hardy anglers who want to go there are fish to be caught On the outer banks we have managed a few Blondes over twenty pound plus spurs into double figures with Conger and Channel Whiting.

Inshore banks are a similar story with Thornback ray Undulates and the occasional Cod which is still in the area.

We also had Smoothound up to twelve pounds which sounds very early in the season, but I don't think they have ever left the area as we had them last month and the month before.

Port Report Allan Yates of Seabooms fame is a very regular angler out of Weymouth and has given the port a good deal of positive and excellent publicity over the years with his detailed write-ups of his charter boat trips.

Allan’s latest trip took place on Saturday 20th aboard Clem Carter’s Wild Frontier and sums up the current Offshore Wrecking fishing.

His report tells us that the day started off with a glorious winter sunrise, low winds and a temperature of 6 degrees C. The forecast was for this to all change by midday with increasing winds and rain coming in.

Indeed the sea was already developing a lump to it on the way out to the chosen mid-channel wreck.

I know we take it somewhat for granted now that the charter boats can handle these conditions which just shows how much things have progressed with modern boat development. To head out mid channel knowing that time is limited but that with the speed and stability of the Cats it is still well worth the effort and, with a following sea to return to port, the ride home is no big deal.

At 1000 Wild Frontier was lined up for the first drift and everyone, apart from Allan who wasn’t ready, was into fish. The session was described as being pretty hectic with skipper and crew running around with the nets and bringing in a very good run of double figure winter pollack up to 19.5lb. Fishing continued until 1300 when it was decided to run for home because enough fish had been caught and conditions were worsening.

It’s very nice that Allan even mentioned skipper Clem having a quick go to catch a fish for tea. It’s always a bit debateable about us skippers having a go…some anglers don’t mind and others get cross about it as they feel they have paid for the day and the space on the boat for themselves.

So, the wrecking reports have been good. And, as ever, it is all down to when the boats can go to sea with all the rotten weather that continues to affect the UK. Previous wrecking trips earlier this month have all been with a good run of pollack so there have been a few days when the offshore marks could be reached and the forecasts for the coming week indicate a bit of mid-week calm.

Like many I have enjoyed reading young Ryan Casey’s shore angling successes and share his obvious enjoyment of his sport. It’s great to see how many Facebook ‘likes’ he receives for his postings and I am sure his exploits must encourage others to try their luck from the beach. (I remember that I actually caught a fish from Chesil once…many years ago). The spin-off is that Ryan’s beach angling may encourage shore anglers to have a go at the boat fishing with him.

Because the fishing has been so restricted by the weather the results, when boats do get out, has been really outstanding. Ryan’s ‘jolly’ with his family out on Meercat last week resulted in 4 blonde rays to a superb 34lb 9oz (150% of specimen weight), a thornback of 13lb 5oz (102% specimen weight) an undulate ray of 16lb 6oz (116%) with the three specimen weight rays all coming within 30 minutes of each other. In addition Ryan landed 10 congers!

So a really amazing inshore fishing session followed by another lively session two days later peaking with a 58lb 8oz (146% specimen eight) conger. Please bear in mind this is inshore fishing just half an hour out of Weymouth Harbour!

Dave Pitman’s Atlanta has been to sea at every opportunity throughout February with blonde rays, undulate rays, conger and whiting featuring in the inshore catches.

I do hope that by the time this report goes to print the weather would have allowed the skippers to go to sea for a few more trips. It has been stupidly hard on everyone this ‘winter’. Skippers have to accept spending many days at home and face, along with anglers, the disappointment with so many trip cancellations. It used to drive me crazy which is why I am over here in Phuket where a bit of Weymouth comes to me and I can keep busy with fishing and diving.

So…March. Well, March was always the month when the pollacking and plaicing was at its best and the aim was to fill every single day in the calendar with either offshore wrecking trips or inshore plaice/turbot outings. It’s not so easy to do that now because of the complete change in the plaice fishing patterns.

Plaicing used to start in late February and was at its best throughout March. This inshore fishing took place on the Shambles Bank and so was easy fishing with the plaice chasing the sandeels. This all changed a few years ago and the best plaice fishing was in September and October…until last year when the mussel beds were wiped out and only a thin scattering of flatties turned up. With the constant heavy seas this winter it will be a miracle if the mussel beds have managed to recover.

Maybe plaice will return to The Shambles but what has developed is the inshore ray fishing and congering with the eels coming from the same shingle based open ground as the rays during the ‘dirty water’ months. A whole range of bank marks seem to be offering very productive fishing all along the south coast. It is fishing that has always been available to a degree but has now become the mainstay for the January-April period.

The offshore pollacking will be the main feature throughout March. From mid-March onwards the ling should start to show. Frozen baits will be required as mackerel are unavailable and are increasingly unlikely to turn up until very late summer. Ling fishing has been very good over recent years with the mid- March to early May period the best time. Ling and anglers are a complete mystery to me. When we don’t find any, everyone wants them and then when you do catch them it’s a struggle to encourage anglers to take them home….even though they are filleted.

I have set aside a prime date for Individuals to go ling fishing at anchor. The date has been advertised fore 8 months and just two people have responded??

Baffling!

There have been Februarys and definitely Marches when the turbot have arrived on The Shambles. The best fishing has been on the ebb tide and the best catches when the tide is running with fishing taking place at either anchor or on the drift with the boat slowed down using the ‘drag weight’ method. When the plaice were on the bank, then this was a good combination trip. Fishing goes in cycles and it’s about time the plaice/turbot/Shambles cycle returned as it was a very good day out….maybe this March??

Chesil beach has yet again been victim to some severe southwesterly wind and the water clarity has been the same as the Bristol Channel for most of the month. February most years is certainly not the most productive month but this year when the beach has been fishable it has produced some pretty good sport. The main reason I think the beach is still producing some good fishing is to do with the sea temperature being well above average for the time of year also the the storms have played a big part creating coloured water and littering the sea bed with natural food.

Ferrybridge to Abbotsbury has still been producing some nice cod, not in great numbers but they are still about and worth targeting, with blow lug and peeler being the best option of baits for the species at present. Another advantage of using peeler is there has been a fair few extremely early smooth hound showing lately also the ray and conger love them. I don't know what it is with peeler at Chesil beach but they always seem to find the better fish so its always worth having half a dozen with you on a visit any time of the year. The dog fish and pout are still about in fairly large numbers and can be a nusance at time, as for the whiting there is a lot about on the western stretches of Chesil to Abbotsbury although they are mostly smaller fish, the further east towards Portland you go the less likely you will see any. A short lob with a slivers of mackerel on a pop up will give you a very good chance of getting amongst the pollack, there has been alot about lately especially on the deeper marks from Abbotsbury to Portland nothing massive but some nice fish up to 3lb.

The conger don't look like they want to leave us this year, the average fish has'nt been as big lately but there is still a lot coming out up to 15lb. To target them, a good sized fish bait cast 70+ yards with high water in the dark and you won't go far wrong. As for the rig I tend to use a pulley pennel on a minimum of 100lb hook length or wire with a set of good strong 6/0 hooks. If lip hooked you will land conger on a lot

lighter hook length but if you are out to target the species its certainly a good idea to step up your end tackle. The ray also seem to be making an early apperance. I have heard reports of undulates and thornback ray being caught at the eastern end of Chesil but haven’t heard of any caught from Abbotsbury as of yet. I’m sure if you targeted them near the bomb shelter area you stand a very good chance of finding one or two with sandeel and peeler being the preferred baits, a long distance cast can also be a great advantage in targeting them. Wayne hand of sea SAC had a brilliant early bass session at Cogden.

He was fishing blow lug and rag baits cast 20 yards out in the gutter at night. He had 14 good wrap round bites on the rod tip and managed to hook and land 8 bass up to 6lb 4oz which is awesome bass fishing for the time of year.

As we move into march all the talk is going to be focused on the western stretches of the mighty Chesil. As the beginning of march usually produces the first of our best looking flat fish the plaice. Cogden and Westbexington usually produce the the better numbers of fish. All we need is the sea visibility to improve as the water temperature is already plenty warm enough for them. I predict that as soon as the water clarity improves we will see the first of the plaice from these areas.

There is only one problem with the early plaice and that is they tend to be very skinny fish but can still provide some great sport during the daylight hours. A lot of anglers tend to target the plaice with multi hook rigs, which is fine when theres a lot around later in the year. At this time of year I find that one generous worm bait on no bigger than a size 2 hook clipped down and sent to the horizon works a lot better targeting single fish. The extra few yards you can get with a single bait opposed to multiple baits can make all the difference between catching and not catching your target species. Worm baits is your best bet for the plaice although I would mix it up a bit using both rag and blow lug as on there day they can both work equally as well. ANGLING TRUST SECURES £131,000 GRANT FROM ESMÉE FAIRBAIRN FOUNDATION TO CAMPAIGN TO PROTECT FISH STOCKS OVER NEXT TWO YEARS The Angling Trust has successfully applied for £131,000 funding from charitable trust the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation to spend on increased campaigning to protect dwindling marine and freshwater fish stocks over the next two years.

The funds will be matched with membership subscription income and fundraising from other sources to pay for political advocacy, campaign materials and staff time, including for a new Campaigns Officer who will support the work of our National Campaigns Coordinator Martin Salter and existing staff in the Angling Trust and Fish Legal.

This new post is being advertised this week at a salary of up to £25,000 and the closing date for applications is Tuesday, 23rd February. Applicants should be based in or around the West Midlands or London and have the ability to work from home.

The focus of the campaigns funded by the charitable trust will be in three key areas: Protection of marine fisheries - reform of legislation on inshore netting, new conservation measures for sea bass and

to protect sensitive estuarine environments.

Reversal of decline in salmon stocks - regulatory measures to tackle agricultural pollution, removal of fish barriers (e.g. weirs and dams), restrictions on commercial netting for Atlantic salmon as part of the Save Our Salmon campaign Restoring natural flows of rivers - reform on water abstraction to lead to the restoration of natural flow regimes on more rivers Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust & Fish Legal, said: “We are very grateful to the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation for its generous support of our work over the next two years and very excited by the opportunity to continue to extend the reach and impact of our campaigns and legal action to protect marine and freshwater fish stocks.

"This level of funding is a major vote of confidence in our organisation and will, I hope, encourage more anglers to support us with donations and membership subscriptions because they will know that their funds will be matched from a charitable trust. If we are successful with these ambitious targets, we may be able to secure further funding in the future from the Foundation and other sources.”
