I understand that Mark has put in a serious amount of time and effort over the past couple of years in his quest for a big Conger from the shore so this capture is richly deserved. FISHING GUIDES DIARY By Craig Butler After a couple of disappointing monthly sessions for Judy I was starting to question my ability in leading Judy to a session with a fish. Tips, tricks and techniques on venues not a problem, getting a fish on the hook seemed a frustrating thing. Thankfully things turned out much more fruitful on this session with Judy bagging herself her 1st bass. Not massive bass, but very welcome non the less.

Fishing 3 hook flappers with rag did the business and it was comforting for Judy to know she didn’t have to be power casting miles out to sea to catch a fish. This is something many anglers go to pieces on thinking they need to launch a bait out of sight. This is just not the case in many situations. In the past sessions Judy’s confidence was dented by thinking she is not casting far enough. Hopefully it has been cast aside for now. Bass, codling and a variety of flatfish and other fish will all move closer in, almost within spitting distance especially on flat shallow beaches.

On this particular day the surface weed was making life hard. Judy fished hard through the floating debris while others would just pack up and go home. Pointing out to Judy that positioning the tripod in a down tide angle helps stability of the rods and stand against such weed problems definitely helped and will help for future sessions.

Also not reeling in as soon as a bit of weed gets hung up on the line and recognising a fake weed bite from a genuine fish bite it vitally important. Judy’ tally of 3 nice school bass at the end of the session was very well deserved for her efforts and determination.

Autumn fishing is fast approaching and to prove that I am writing this report with my fist cancellation today the first forty miles an hour winds and reported to stay that way all week.

Fishing has been great last day out was Sunday most other charter boats cancelled with strong winds forecasted but having a cat we can push the weather a bit more than others and wow was it worth it with plenty of rays boated, hounds and whiting and the weather stayed calm all day and only started to freshen up as we steamed in with our happy anglers.

Cod have been reported in good numbers several miles to the east of us and well out to sea which is good news hopefully they

will come our way in a few weeks.

Whiting are here as usual in good numbers they keep the rods busy in between the benders a few sting ray have also been boated to the horror of some anglers scattering with the Steve Irwin effect.

On our boat we do an all in price for the boat and basic dead baits i.e squid which is a great all round bait catching most species but it always surprises me that half the partys rely on this and the other half go the extra mile and bring a bit of live bait etc they always seem to do better and the other half trying to ponce or buy some from the others, its part of the fun I think getting your baits together a bit of this a bit of that and this often gives you that little bit extra chance of that specimen fish.

SIZE MATTERS

The fact that he managed to land such a large fish on his own over slippery boulders just adds to the achievement. Superb capture Mark, well done chap.

The start of October usually heralds the start of the period when you have the best chance of landing a really decent eel from the local Plymouth shore line. Any of the deep water marks along the River Tamar will produce eels and whilst Devils Point will always prove to be popular, you also have a chance of a real heavyweight eel both at Richmond Walk and anywhere along the Mount Wise sea wall (Mutton Cove providing easy access to deep water). On the open coast rock marks at both Rame Head and Stoke Point also have the potential to throw up very big eels. I have always found the fresh cuttle and squid fish very well early in the season, particularly if the squid are around in large numbers.

This year the seasons seem to be all over the place and this is reflected in the recent captures of some very large Garfish which usually show from the shore between the months of May and July rather than September. The best fish I have heard of is a cracking Gar of 1-15 caught by Ray Hartley of Naval Stores SAC caught during the last round of the monthly Plymouth Veterans

Competition. During the same comp Ray Bryce of Pot Black SAC made the long journey down into Cornwall and was rewarded with a good shore Pollack of 4-1.

Following a bit of a down-turn over the last few months, some larger Bullhuss now seem to be featuring in captures for those fishing from rock marks. Rob Hobbs of Robs Tackle and Bait is on a roll at the moment and during the last round of the Plymouth Shore League he weighed in a cracking Huss of 13-7 which was a new PB whilst fellow club member Ian Bryce managed to find a new PB Huss of 12-5 along with some good Pollack, Mackerel and Garfish. If the weather allows the rock marks down in Cornwall are certainly worth a try over the next few months but please make sure that the conditions allow you to fish safely.

On the boats I have received a report from Kev McKie on Size Matters who tells me that the fishing continues to be excellent out from Plymouth. The sharking has been excellent all season and during the past month Kev tells me he has caught good numbers of Blue Sharks up to a maximum weight of 103lb along with Porbeagles to 60lb. For those wanting to fish the wrecks he has landed Pollack to 14-8 and Ling to 20lb. Kev will shortly be taking Size Matters back up to Liverpool for the Winter season so I wish him well and look forward to receiving reports again next Spring.

CHESIL BEACH

CHESIL BEACH REPORT

The general fishing along the beach has improved a lot compared to last month.

At the deeper end of chesil there seems to be a good number of trigger fish showing.

They are normally caught on small squid baits but be sure to use strong hooks and heavier snoods as they have sharp teeth.

Simon Bristow and a few mates took a trip to chesil earlier in the month with triggers in mind and landed some lovely fish, biggest weighing 3lb 6oz.

The bream fishing has been fairly steady along the beach but is proving to be hard going trying to find some of the better size fish. There can be so many small bream at times they can become a nuisance for some anglers trying to target other species.

On the shallower grounds there has been

a few sole showing but like the bream there seems to be no bigger fish making an appearance.

Andrew Proudfoot and Till Hall have putting the hours in targeting sole and have been rewarded with some reasonable size fish.

Over the past week or so the cod fishing has improved along chesil and with the storms that we’re experiencing at the moment should only improve.

The baits most anglers rely on to target cod are lugworm, crab or squid.

The weather recently has been dangerous on our coasts so be carful if your venturing out on a trip. Chesil can throw up some nasty surprises! Until next time tight lines all…

THE NOMADS On Thursday 30th August The Fickling Cup was fished with 9 adults and 3 juniors fishing at Langney Point. The winner was Gerald Sargeant with plaice ans sole for 2lb 2oz. Second was Arran Aghilli with 1lb 12oz and third Joe Plumstead with 1lb 9oz. The heaviest fish was a plaice of 13 ½ oz for Joe Plumstead with no round fish recorded.

The next round of the Fickling Cup was fished on Tuesday 11th September and was again won by Gerald Sargeant with 4lb 8oz. Second Arran Aghilli with 2lb 8ozand third Arran White with 1lb 5oz. Arran also having the heaviest round with a whiting of 10oz. The heaviest flat was shared between Gerald Sargeant and Arran Aghilli with a sole of 1lb 2oz.

ANDERIDA FISHING CLUB On Monday 27th August 15 fished the match in Pevensey Bay with Keith Erridge The winner landing 3 sole for 1lb 9oz. Second Gary Banfield with 1lb 4oz and third Simon Constable with 1lb 3oz. Simon also winning the biggest fish with his nice sole of 1lb 3oz.

On Monday 10th September 15 anglers fished in Pevensey Bay and White Horses.

The winner was Paul King with 1lb 12oz.

Second Colin Isaacs with 1lb 7oz and third Colin Everest with 1lb 4oz. The heaviest round was an eel of 11 ½ oz for Paul King and the heaviest flat a sole of 1lb 1oz for Kevin Morgan.

Whitehorses recently and both Fred Wassel and Keith Erridge have caught numbers of sizable plaice on several occasions!! Luke Ripley sent in pictures showing plenty of plaice last week at Langney. At night some nice dover sole have been caught again mainly at Langney Point and Whitehorses with Paul Sandalls catching 5 sole recently including 3 over a 1lb. And at last !! some codling are beginning to show wit Gerald Sargeant catching one around 2 ½ lb and Luke Cornelius pictured with a sizable one too! Several have also put in an appearance at Seaford as well as a fish of around 5lb at Whitehorses, so encouraging signs for this season ! The boats are still finding some Turbot off shore as well as plaice closer in!! Bass are showing and as of 1st October anglers will be allowed to keep 1 for the table !!

And inshore local boats are also reporting catches of codling on local rock marks !!

PEVENSEY BAY ANGLING CLUB The match in June saw 21 anglers fishing during the day on Sunday but unfortunately only 5 weighed in. The winner was Gary Banfield with 2lb 2oz including the biggest flat with a flounder of 10oz and the biggest round with an eel of 1lb. Second was Dan Wood with 5 els for 1lb 13oz. Third Wesley Sargeant with 15oz and fourth Ian Hopper with 12 ½ oz.

On Sunday 12th August 19 anglers fished in calm conditions with the winner Colin Isaacs 1lb 7 ½ oz including a gurnard and an eel. 2nd Mark Underhill with 1lb 5 ½ oz.

3rd Keith Erridge with 1lb 4 ½ oz and 4th Tony Bush with 15 ½ oz. The biggest round was an eel of 13 ½ oz for Les Glazzard and the biggest flat a sole of 15 ½ oz for Tony Bush.

GENERAL When there has been a sustained level of calm weather the mackerel are still showing and now on sunny days the plaice are also turning up with some nice fish being caught at Langney Point and some at Whitehorses.

POOLE REPORT

As the 1st of the Autumnal Gales hit home it gives me time to reflect on the fantastic weather we have had this year, from severe snow and cold in March to the hottest summer for years. Fishing has also been so unpredictable with lack of Mackeral to poor offshore wreck fishing and seeing more dolphins in the bay than in previous years.

Dave Colcough does it again with another PB fish this time whilst shark fishing aboard Matt Rowe’s boat Piscary he dropped a set of feathers over to bag a few mackeral and hooked a 6lb 4 ozs Tub Gurnard setting a new boat record and bagging himself a free trip aboard Piscary. A day afloat with the Salisbury Firefighters saw plenty of action with plenty of Rays and Bream to keep the lads occupied. Plaice along the beaches have come in good numbers but they have tended to be on the small or just

sizeable side but have provided plenty of action to keep anglers busy and mixed in amongst them has been lots of Tub, Red and Grey Gurnards some reaching up to 2lb. Tenerife based angler Denis Hanger landed a PB Undulate Ray of 14lb on his last UK fishing trip this year. Local IT specialist Gary decided to try sea fishing for the 1st time and for his rewards came his 1st fish a beautiful 1lb 6 ozs Trigger Fish and on the same trip Pat landed a Pollock of 5lb. Some bonus Codling have also been caught whilst Plaice fishing. Some excellent Gilthead Bream fishing in the harbour has been had by anglers wishing to fish close to Hamworthy Park and Rockley. Looking forward the 1st of the winter species will arrive as the temperatures start to drop and hopefully we will see a few more Cod than last year.

POOLE

SILVER SPRAY REPORT

We have just got back from our last Alderney trip of the year, crossing into Poole harbour safely just a few hours before storm Ali batters the south coast. Strong south westerly winds kept us in sheltered waters to the north of the island for 3 days. The main target species was couch’s sea bream which every angler on the boat managed catch, Jed leaving his until the last minute just as we hauled the anchor up to come home. A surprise catch came in the form of our first and second ever trigger fish landed around the Channel Islands. Andy Armitage’s fish weighed 4lb and was quickly released as it looked to be a female in season. Fishing at anchor mid channel has also been fruitful with plenty of black bream tope and congers on the wrecks. We are seeing an abundance of porbeagle sharks just like last year, although they are proving tough to hook on the correct

tackle usually favouring hooks meant for bream.

In Poole bay plaice fishing has been brilliant of late with fish averaging around the 2lb mark and all the way up to 4lb. I’ve noticed it has been worth sitting it out as they can sometimes be a bit picky about when they come on the feed, sometimes changing from one day to the next.

Elsewhere at anchor the ray fishing has been good also with good numbers of small eyed and undulates about. We are even seeing turbot and brill at anchor regularly which is never a bad thing. It’s well worth bringing frozen mackerel from now on as the they are becoming unreliable to find for bait. We have spaces in the first week of October to target porbeagle sharks as we are going 5 days on the trot in an effort to keep track of them.

Autumn gales are battering the coastline as I type this report making fishing conditions difficult. When the wind subsides fishing should be excellent with fish foraging inshore for food that has been dislodged.

At this time of year big fish baits anchored from beach or rock marks have every chance of being taken by big bass, huss, conger, ray and even tope.

There will be a few smoothound from many marks with crab or squid baits likely to bring success with these hard fighting members of the shark family that have been showing right through autumn into winter over recent seasons.

Grey mullet are often abundant during autumn and can be tempted from harbours and rock marks using float-fished or paternostered bread flake.

Anglers prepared to fish smaller hooks with worm baits can catch a wide variety of fish including sole, red mullet and flatfish with Ilfracombe Pier a proven venue for variety.

Boat anglers off Ilfracombe can expect sport with bass and tope. Triggerfish are likely with small baits close inshore.

Barnstaple Fair week is often linked to the start of the flounder fishing season in the Taw and Torridge Estuary and Barnstaple’s Triple Hook Club have a series of Open matches starting in mid October. Early in the flounder season crabs and small bass strip the anglers hooks with freshwater and lower temperatures required to bring the fishing to its peak.

Combe Martin Sea Angling Club hosted their annual Fun Fishing Event on Ilfracombe Pier in conjunction with the Sea Ilfracombe Maritime Festival. The event once again proved very popular with guests Dominick Garnett from the Angling Trust, Steve Dawe representing the Stroke association and the local coastguard focusing on safety. Ilfracombes’s High Street Tackle and Ilfracombe Aquarium sponsored the event. Ilfracombe Aquarium benefitted from the event with fish caught on the day donated for display.

LANGSTONE HARBOUR AREA BOAT FISHING REPORT

By Neville Merritt, Southsea Marina Angling Club We are now well into September and watching the transition from summer season to autumn. One of the milestones is the Southsea Marina Angling Club summer BBQ which was held on one of the last sunny weekends before the wind and clouds started to make more of an appearance. We had great intentions of doing a beach clean on the day, but our efforts were overshadowed by the amazing work that The Final Straw Solent have been making clearing rubbish from our local beaches and harbours – including entire boats! Watch out for the publicity for their next mass beach cleans. Back to the SMAC BBQ: Esme Andrews represented the club in the beach clean so at least we did something on the day! An impromptu raffle also raised over £70 for the RNLI, which has since increased significantly from donated prizes from the monthly awards.

Shark fishing has attracted more attention this year because threshers are regularly sighted south of the Island. Several charter skippers have been running exploratory trips and with the experienced gained we hope to hear of some interesting catches in due course.

The first codling have been reported, they usually appear in nets and pots before anglers catch them. This is surprising because with the water temperatures so high we were expecting a later arrival, but they seem to be sticking to the calendar.

There are still mackerel and scad around but not in such large numbers as last month. The plaice are feeding well and will still be around for a couple more months before moving offshore, returning in March.

Another seasonal visitor is the trigger fish, which arrive in September, stay around for a month then disappear. Bill Arnold

and Luke Scott both caught some nice specimens. Inshore rocky marks, squid or fish strip baits, small hooks and very strong traces – even wire – are the winning mix.

Triggers have very powerful toothy jaws and can easily cut through light mono.

Some good bass have been caught throughout the year, and we welcome the promised relaxation of the bass rules which we expect will allow us to keep one fish per day over the size limit. Dave Ford caught and released a magnificent 11lb 10oz fish.

Turbot are always a popular target although we don’t get many in the area, or of the size you will find further south. However, Chris Sartow, Tim Andrews and Kev Johnson were very happy to land a few this month.

One of the many wonderful things about fishing in this area is the variety of species available. Heber Crawford shows off some impressive weevers and a red mullet. Luke Scott shows off his first gilthead bream.

It's been a couple of months since my last report, the temperature is starting to drop and the nights are drawing in. Autumn is definitely on the way and with it will bring a change in species. Smouthounds have pretty much left the bay now and in the next month hopefully we will see the first of the codling and whiting. The whiting fishing over the last couple of winters has been fairly good with decent numbers to around 2lb. Hopefully the cod will be plentiful and come October we may even be able to retain a bass if lucky enough to catch one.

July 22nd Seanies Flyer spent the day at Weymouth with Martin Quinn, Andy Georgiou and Nigel Devey on board. First fish on board was a cracking brill of 6lb to Nigel. Other fish caught were plaice, turbot and some decent blondes on the drift over the shambles bank.

August the 5th Seanies Flyer and Ultra White were back down Weymouth. Fishing was a bit slower than last time with small flats off the bank but Nigel Devey did find a nice double figure undulate ray. On the same day Lucky Strike launched at Burnham with Craig Willis and Stephen Saxby on board. They stayed local as it was only a short trip over high water but fishing was busy with plenty of thornies, dogs, eels and a couple of hounds to Stephen the best 17lb.

Mid August and a few members went back to Norway with much better weather than their visit in the spring. Lots of cod mixed in with coalies and halibut with a couple of pb's, Martin Quinn with a cod of 50lb and Nigel Devey with a butt of 55lbs.

September 2nd and Four Buoys made it out for the first time in about 6 weeks. Another short trip with Stephen Saxby, myself and my lad Jack as

crew. Fishing was steady with the usual suspects and Jack came out on top with 11.5 fish (I think his fish counting skills need working on !!).

September 8-9th should have been our 32 hour species comp but with a poor forecast this was cut down to just 9 hours on the Saturday. Only 2 boats with 5 anglers made it out. With conditions against us our options were limited and this was reflected in the species tally. On Four Bouys we couldn't even find a doggie and Sand Piper only had 2 on board all day, very odd. There was a 3 way tie for first with Steve Winters, Barry Beaton and myself on just 4 species.

September 12th 3 members and a couple of friends had a day out sharking on White Waters in West Wales. A great day at sea with 20 blues coming to the boat with 4 over 100lbs with a biggest of 115lbs to me. Lots of dolphins around the boat and we even had a few tuna busting the surface on the way in.

MINEHEAD BOAT REPORT

RECENT CATCHES ABOARD SEAFIRE II

Yet another notable month for the boat fishing out of Minehead. Many great rays including small eyed, blonde, thornback and spotted have been taken close to home. Fish baits including mackerel and squid have proved deadly presented on a flowing trace. Still one or two smoothounds falling to crab and squid baits though numbers are now well down on the last couple of months. Inshore grounds have been exceptional with some cracking black bream. The boys from Veals mail order enjoyed a spectacular day aboard Alykat with over 40 fish with several

double shots. Whilst on the silver subjects, bass have also made a show but alas, our government won't allow us to keep any yet, even though they have admitted that they were wrong again with their calculation, oh to be British eh? Offshore marks still producing the odd tope but they are now all but gone now. Huss remain a major player in most trips providing good sport on mackerel baits and light gear. The first of the cod have also been taken which looks good for the coming though so far they have been smallish.

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT

The autumn is shaping up nicely here in the Bristol Channel.

Many parts of the channel are reporting some good mixed fishing for a whole host of species.

Whether you want to target a specimen fish or bag up a number of fish, there’s something on offer to all anglers.

Most notably the bass fishing has been very impressive for those that target them with either bait or lures. Targeting them with lures in the cleaner water of the channel has produced some great catches. Up in the dirtier water from Minehead to the upper channel the bait fishing has seen many good specimens recorded.

With the nights drawing in with the colder weather moving in codling will be on many anglers minds. It remains to be seen how we will fair in the channel this autumn and winter. It’s got to be better than last year that’s for sure.

The early signs are good though. We had plenty of small codling about in the spring so fingers crossed their numbers have remained safe during the summer . The 25cm -35 cm codling from the spring seem to be pushing 35-45cm at the mo so hopefully we will see a good few showing up over the next month or so.

The Porlock and Bossington area has continued to fish well with plenty of species available. Good Huss, congers and a few rays along with bass, codling, pollock and small black bream are just a handful of species on offer over high and low water.

At Minehead sport has been steady with consistent Ray fishing on offer from mainly small eyed and spotted ray with the odd blonde showing over low water in the Culvercliff area towards white mark.

Minehead golf links through to Dunster beach has started to produce a few codling .sizes seem to be 1.5- 2.5lb. There’s also plenty of bass and a few decent rays showing from the sandy patches.

Blue anchor beach and wall has a good few congers, Thornbacks and a few small Whiting and pout with the odd decent bass available.

Also some good mullet are there for those who like a challenge.

The Somerset reefs have been producing some cracking bass in and around the many gullies and ledges. Small strap congers can be a pest throughout theses reefs at times. Also the good old trusty Thornback can be a reliable target species from the muddy and clean areas.

Burnham on sea has fished well for rays, bass and some good Sole fishing. Neap tides over low water fishing it up has always been the key time to concentrate efforts . Although the sea wall can produce well on the bigger tides. With the arrival of the codling, this next month should hopefully see a few start to show over low water by the lighthouse.

The Brean down and Sandpoint marks have plenty of Thornback ray and congers available with a very good chance of some good bass action for those anglers targeting them. There’s been no word on any codling showing around the Postishead and Severn beach area as yet , but they can’t be far away.

Anyway that’s it for this month. There’s some great sport fishing opportunities on offer in the channel in the month ahead, so get out and enjoy it.

Certainly one of the better years for charter skippers, mid September, high temperatures, mainly settled conditions and plenty of fish.

After piling on weight during the summer months, the Plaice have arrived in good numbers, Not massive fish,but ranging from 8oz to 4lb. Ragworm,Black Lug,uncooked Prawns, and Razor fish,tip any of these with slitther of squid, present it on a trace full of bling and you should catch one of these beautifully marked specimens.

Our last trip over the horizon to fish some sand banks saw a good mixed bag of Rays,Conger, Bullhuss,Tope. All the fish were caught on Mackerel, Squid and Sandeel baits presented on running ledgers.

Good news on the Bass front ! anglers can now keep 1 Bass per a day as of the 1st October 2018. There are still a few shoals of mackerel about and reports of the first Cod and Codling being caught.

Fishing locally and offshore has produced some good sport with Bream Tope Conger and Pollock coming from the offshore wrecks, and the adjacent banks producing Blonde ray Bullhuss Tope and the occasional Turbot. Inshore we have had a late run of Plaice and Dabs which have seen fish up to four pound nothing really big but great fishing.

Port Report The Weymouth Conger Festival took place in the third week of August in decent weather for the first time in the last few years. In 2016, despite the boats bouncing all over the place and dragging their anchors, a formidable 614 conger were recorded. 2017 saw an increase with 807 conger recorded and this year, 2018, the catch rate went up even more with the 11 participating vessels reporting just over 1000 conger coming to the recorders sheets which is a truly staggering total for 3 days of fishing.

Heaviest overall eel went to Weymouth’s Darren Axford on 64lb 4oz. Darren fished from Ryan Casey’s Meercat with anglers on Ryan Casey’s Meercat taking the biggest eels on Days 1 (Nigel Mcloughlin 53lb) and 3 (Darren Axford) as well as a truly splendid blue shark of 170lb on Day 2. The biggest eel on Supanova on Day 2 weighed in at 64lb (Will Smith) just 4ounces less than the winning eel showing how close the competition was.

It’s hard enough to win this competition but Darren Axford has now won it three times which is an amazing achievement.

It’s worth including skipper Lyle Stantiford’s own report on the event. Lyle writes: “Fantastic 3 days in the annual Weymouth conger comp. Bait was hard to come by at times (typical) fishing was crazy one minute and quiet the next. Team Supanova managed to land 181 eels over the three days. 96 on day 1, 60 day 2 and 25 on day 3. Over 1000 eels caught and released on barbless hooks by the 11 competing boats with only 10 fish bought back to the scales over the three days.

Weymouth also welcomed visiting charter boat Kelly’s Hero to the Festival. Kelly’s Hero is based in Hayling Island and skippered by Bex Florence.

Onboard was 15 year old Mary Cairns, daughter of Glen Cairns, well known skipper of Valkyrie.

Mary was the youngest competitor and took the heaviest eel on her boat. She was pleased to meet up with the oldest competitor, 82 year old Sid Smith from Essex. Sid has been fishing the Weymouth Conger Festival for many years and emerged as the overall winner, much to the delight of his fellow competitors, in the Points category with 275 points out of a maximum 300 points over the three days. Sid fished from Offshore Rebel with new Rebel Skipper Jamie Pullin.

Apart from the conger, August was very much dominated by the many black bream which provided exciting fishing from marks all around the Weymouth/Portland sea area. Rays also featured with catches of turbot and the occasional brill remaining steady throughout the month.

September’s weather has carried on being wonderful although, as I write today 17th September, we are in for a big change in the weather with plenty of wind forecast which is a great shame for the 30 strong Belgium contingent here and the four boats due to take them out for a week’s varied fishing.

The weekend just past (15th and 16th Sept) saw the Weymouth Angling Society Boat Festivals taking place. This was an excellent event giving the chance to catch up with members who have fished this local competition for many years. Weymouth Angling Society if the oldest registered club in the country at over 100 years of age and is a very fine organisation enjoying a hard fought for club house. (The usual story; a superb local social and angling centre with a thriving junior section which is under constant threat of the local Council wanting to knock it all down for a car park). The overall men’s Champion was England’s EFSA shore maestro Dave Lovelock with Kannika Chochai taking the Ladies section.

Andy Selby, owner of Weymouth Angling Centre, generates a massive amount of business for the Weymouth charter boats with the various competitions he encourages into the area.

His organisational skills along with the brilliant partnership supplied by his wife Charlotte, have really put Weymouth on the map as THE competition port to fish from.

The 2019 competition diary is extremely impressive with The Home Nations Boat Championships (England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales) taking place over the 10th to the 15th of June with the practice days and actual event 914th and 15th June) involving 8 of the port’s charter vessels.

The British Conger Club’s annual event is moving out of Plymouth for the first time in its long history and is coming to Weymouth which will be its new centre. The BCC’s Championships will take place on the 27th and 28th June., The Weymouth Conger Festival is on 21st to 23rd August. This is over a Bank Holiday so competitors are advised to book their accommodation early!!

Weymouth Angling Society’s Open Boat Competition takes place on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September. There are Charter Boats offering Individual places for this friendly event which will require you becoming a temporary member for a very nominal fee in order to participate.

EFSA (European Federation of Sea Anglers) are bringing 150 competitors to fish the 9th to 13th September which will be an excellent boost to the towns ‘out of season’ tourist economy as many of these competitors bring wives and family with them.

Then there is the five day WIBAC 7th to 11th October followed by the Pairs Open on Thursday and Friday 7th and 8th November.

So there are many competitive events to look forward to next year which may be of interest as well as the normal chartering the port offers.

It’s been a wonderful summer and now we are in line for the very best month of all, October. Thank you to everyone for coming to Weymouth and may you be fortunate in enjoying the excellent inshore fishing offered in this next month.

They were both fishing from locally built wooden Berry boat, Eclipse, owned by Ryan Casey and skippered by Katie Balem, the port’s youngest and first fully qualified working charter skipper.

Katie along with fellow skipper Jack Lott, have been specialising in ‘Beginners’ over this first season and have done amazingly well with many four hour trips taking place. Katie has become a very knowledgeable skipper of the inshore marks as the speed of the old boat restricts her distance of travel. This knowledge really paid off with every competitor on the boat winning prizes.

As one of those who enjoyed the two days afloat with her, I can only express my admiration for the way she handles the vessel and her undoubted knowledge of these inshore marks and their tides. It was a wonderful weekend’s fishing, so very well done to Katie. (You can see her on Facebook…just look up Eclipse Charters).

There’s good news that the pollack are back on the offshore wrecks. Boats returning from amazing bream fishing in Alderney, including a few couches bream, report very lively midchannel wreck fishing.

We are led to believe that anglers MAY be allowed to retain one bass per trip starting on October 1st…but we’ll see if this is true. Apparently the ‘powers that be’ have realised that anglers do not take anywhere near the amount of bass that was being bandied about. So, maybe…just maybe, the resource which is owned by all of us but which the ordinary man is denied, may be available on a one fish basis. I’m sure many of you reading this are furious about the unfair treatment of the Recreational Sector and have been made very aware, if you weren’t already, at the way politics has dominated our sport over recent years.

Even the hint of this total ban being lifted has resulted in a number of lost charter boat bookings being reinstated in the hope this will happen.

October to December was very much bass time with the final trips to the Channel Islands in October being all about the bass and the Individual Specialist Bass trips out of Weymouth and Portland forming a very important end to the season’s charter bookings.

Last week 120 Policemen, many high rankling officers amongst them, arrived for a week of practice culminating in the Police National Finals on Friday 14th. Dragged out of retirement in order to skipper an extra boat needed for the event, I was delighted to have the overall Individual winner onboard with Dave Hawkes amassing 863 points narrowly beating well known visitor, John Wright, who finished second on 826 points with Alan Jones third on 806 points.

October’s fishing will continue to concentrate on the bream along with turbot on The Shambles and rays from various banks around the area.

There’s plenty of conger about during the anchoring sessions along with the usual dogfish and pout with bream appearing all over the place. There’s a surprising amount of decent sized inshore pollack available (up to 4lb) if you know how to catch them. These inshore pollack, in less than 20 metres of water, fight very well on light tackle so they are well worth considering as a target fish on the drift.

This was primarily a Team Event with Met A coming first (Vernon Allen, Tim Ashman, Tim Peerless and Simon Norman) on 385.79 percentage points just beating West Midlands Police who were a very close second (Roger Symons, Don Cambell, Brad Hallowes and Dave Havkes) on 383.94 percentage points. Third placed Gloucestershire Police Force with 351.68

The Weymouth International Boat Angling Challenge (WIBAC) in mid month so expect a wide variety of species to be caught on the light tackle days and rays and conger to feature on the ‘Big Fish; days. NOMURA IN NORWAY Gear Review

It’s a question I often hear from guys going on their first trip to Norway……… ..’What gear do I need’? Those whom are lucky enough to make the yearly pilgrimage to the fish-rich waters of Northern Norway will tell you there is absolutely no place for the heavy 3050lb class boat rods and reels as you seldom lose much gear there. A 2030lb class boat rod definitely gets my vote but more and more anglers are scaling down their tackle to make the most of the superb sport on offer in Norway and that often means a good quality spinning rod and reel. Catching a 20lb+ Coalie on a light spinning outfit is the ultimate in sport and is one of the reasons why I keep going back to Norway.

This year I was extremely fortunate to have been provided with rods and reels from the Nomura range, those being the Kanji Lure Rod 40-80g and the Aichi SW5500FD Spinning Reel.

With the words of Dave Kiddy of Kiddywholesale ringing in my ears..… ’Give it a good hammering and see how you get on’….. I’m glad to say that’s exactly what we did during our week in Havnnes this year.

Looking at the Kanji Lure Rod first, one of the most important matters for me using a spinning rod afloat is the overall length of the rod. You don’t want something too long which makes things awkward (especially when trying to land a large fish alongside the boat) but at the same time you don’t want a rod that is so short that it loses its through action and is more akin to a poker stick. It’s about getting the right balance and at a length of 2.4m I would suggest that the Kanji is the perfect length for use afloat and during a week

of solid use never once did I feel its’ use problematic in a 19ft boat along with 3 other guys.

The casting weight of the Kanji I was using was 40-80g and it certainly had the backbone to cast out lures up to 120g away from the boat with no issues of the rod feeling like it was folding-up as you did so. The rod itself weighs just 151g making it very-much user friendly which is important when you are afloat all day (which is often the case in Norway and making the most of the 24 hours of daylight). The saltwater guides are robust and ideally suited for braided mainlines which is a must in Norway. Good quality white EVA handles and reinforced graphite reel seat complete the rod although in all honesty the reel seat could be a bit more robust and this has been taken on-board by the manufacturer. The rod comes in 2 sections of roughly equal length.

Well how did the rod perform?

Well Nomura state that this rod is unbreakable and having landed some serious fish on this rod over a week I can safely say I have no reasons to doubt this statement. The rod has a great through action bending from tip to butt and handled double-figure Cod and Coalies with relative ease. It always felt as if the rod had plenty more to give if and when required which is what you need when fishing for large specimen fish. This was proven one night fishing a set of sabiki’s for bait when one of the hooks was taken by a very large fish (probably a Cod). The rod more than proved a match for the fish but unfortunately the 50lb snoods on the sabiki’s could not and I was left wondering what could have been.

For a rod retailing for around £50 I can certainly recommend the Nomura Kanji for those looking to purchase a spinning rod that will handle the large fish we come to expect when visiting Norway but one which won’t break the bank.

The Aichi Spinning Reel First impressions of the Aichi SW5500FD reel were that it was the ideal size in terms of complimenting the Kanji Lure Rod (it didn’t feel too bulky when strapped to the rod) whilst the all-metal construction gives a certain degree of robustness which is essential in a harsh saltwater environment. I also liked the large over-size rubber handle which is becoming ever more popular on spinning reels and is an absolute god-send when you have cold wet hands. We often find ourselves wearing gloves in Norway during the colder days so having a decent sized handle with good grip is just what you need in the boat when cranking a fixed spool.

With a total of 11 ball bearings the reel is very smooth, with a retrieve of 5.3:1 which is just about ideal when working large shads or flying collar set-ups. Coalfish apart, I find a steady retrieve works better for most species in Norway. Loaded with 30lb braid I was easily able to fill the reel with over 200m which was more than adequate for the depths we were fishing.

Something that always concerns me when using fixed spool reels on the boat is the potential ingress of saltwater. Using any reel on a boat means they are more likely to be subject to much harsher conditions than those you would experience on the shore with saltwater spray getting

into anything and everything. However this isn’t an issue for the Aichi Spinning Reel as it has been purposely built for the saltwater environment including a main shaft and drive gear built using stainless steel and washers provided where they need to be in order to prevent any saltwater from getting into the internal workings of the reel.

Nomura are so confident that they have cracked this that the reel is known as their ‘Saltwater King’ and having left the reel on the boat all week and subjected it to all sorts of conditions (including a few waves over the side) I can safely say that its’ performance was not impacted upon in any way.

It goes without saying that when using for those larger species like Coalies which hit you hard and fast it is absolutely essential that your drag is smooth (as well as being properly set). The Aichi uses over-size carbon washers in the drag system resulting in the release of line under tension being very smooth and during a week of use I found it to be faultless. I also like the fact that the reel doesn’t have an anti-reverse which is just something that gets in the way and can result in the loss of a fish of a lifetime if it is accidently engaged during the fight – you just don’t need it.

Overall the Aichi SW5500LD reel is a quality bit of kit, purpose built for the saltwater environment and tough enough to deal with the rigours of all aspects of lure fishing (spinning or jigging) from both boat or shore.

Retailing for around £100 it performs better than some reels I have used which have double this price tag and is why it will be in the suitcase for next year’s return to Havnnes!

At Queensferry, the brackish period before the tide starts to flood up the channel is generally reckoned to be the most challenging but John Waugh managed a double of flounders on his first cast and continued to catch throughout. Team England’s Bill Lindfield was on the next peg and worked hard to catch up with the reigning Personal Members champion but John took the verdict by 27 points at the final whistle.

Eels and flounders made up most of the catches on a sultry afternoon with only two school bass caught. Steve Crowder’s 44 cms flounder and John Waugh’s eel (see photo) were the standout fish.

Match Report:4th Round of NWASAC Summer League 2018, Sun 19th August, Dee Estuary Queensferry, (25 anglers) On a fine, sunny day, catches of eels, flounders and bass came from the Blue Bridge section of the narrow Dee channel over high water during this penultimate round of the series.

There was a close result for the top three and Bill Lindfield’s winning bag included the joint longest bass of 33cms. With a dead heat on points between John Waugh and Bill Lindfield, the final match in the league will be fished at the low water Town Hall and Maddock banks in Wallasey on October 21st.

Here is the result of our latest match which was a Shallow Boats comp held on Sunday 9th September.

14 members went afloat but with an increasing South Westerly wind found fish hard to come by but 6 managed to weigh in 15 fish for 4k 576gms. Species were Flounder, Eel, Scad, Bass, Gurnard & Wrasse with the best fish being a Bass of 1k 134gms caught by Gary Thomas. the fish was returned to the water after measuring with the weight coming from our Weight to Length Chart.

Recreational Fishing Trip out of Poole.

On Wednesday 12th September Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a recreational fishing trip out of Poole aboard charter boat “Strongbow” in which 7 club members were hoping for a good day’s fishing.

On Tuesday evening 4th September Lymington &District Sea Fishing Club held a Shingle Bank League competition in which 11 club members signed on.

The weather conditions on the evening were very good with a nice breeze. 7 club members caught fish consisting of undulate ray, black bream, scad, pouting and garfish. 20 fish in total were weighed for a total weight of 26lbs 0.4oz. Only edible fish are retained. All other fish are gently returned to the sea after weighing.

Best fish of the evening was an undulate ray weighing 7lb 12.2oz caught by Danny Panks.

With a northerly offshore wind, sunshine and showers it was decided to drift for mackerel as bait which resulted in 7 being caught plus scad, pouting, garfish and bass.

Then on to fish between the two piers where plaice and a few dab were caught. As the tide eased we moved on to Hengistbury Head where cod, ballan wrasse, baillion wrasse, garfish, conger ell, black bream, dogfish and tub gurnard were caught. A 4lb cod was caught by Anton Emblem.

A2lb 6.4oz black bream was caught by George Dark and a 8oz baillion wrasse was caught by Roland Blomfield which is a new catch and release record.

As the tide started to ebb we drifted for plaice of which one of 1lb 8oz was caught.

Also caught were dabs, garfish, smoothhounds, tub gurnard and mackerel.

All in all 15 different species were caught and a big thank you goes to Vernon Everitt for his help on the day.

AMBASSADOR ANNOUNCED FOR WORLD SHORE ANGLING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2018

The Welsh Federation of Sea Anglers are thrilled to announce Julian Lewis Jones as their Ambassador for the World Shore Angling Championships 2018.

Julian is passionate about fishing and in particular on his home shorelines here in Wales, and with us sees this event as a fabulous opportunity to promote what Wales has to offer” The Federation, along with Conwy County Borough Council welcome the world’s top shore anglers for the 35th World Championship for Men and the 26th World Championship for Ladies to Conwy County next month. The first time for the event to be hosted in Wales.

Julian Lewis Jones, Ambassador for the World Shore Angling Championships said: ”I welcome the opportunity to be Ambassador for this international event here in Wales. The World Shore Angling Championships is a fantastic opportunity to promote our beautiful country, Cymru, Wales, as well as the sport of fishing. Plus educate residents and tourists about what we have in our shorelines. A warm Welsh welcome awaits all 22 countries competing, and I wish all teams the very best of luck.”
