Special Awards: Harold Keen Award for Outstanding Contribution to Journalism

Diane Bell

For 28 years, Diane Bell relayed stories that were upbeat, off-beat and captured the heartbeat of the San Diego region. Her thriceweekly column showcased items of human interest, behind-the-scenes happenings, humorous incidents and highlighted ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

Diane arrived at The San Diego Union from the University of Missouri School of Journalism where, in pursuit of her master’s degree, she resided in Brussels and covered the Common Market and NATO. Afterward, she joined Copley Newspapers' year-long training program and hop-scotched from beat to beat learning from veteran reporters.

Various roles followed education writer, general assignment reporter, feature writer and consumer columnist. After a stint in the mid-‘80s as senior deputy editor of U.S. News & World Report in Washington D.C. and completion of the Stanford Publishing Course, she returned to The San Diego Union in 1989 to become the newspaper’s first op-ed page editor and an editorial writer. Diane was active in the national Association of Opinion Page Editors and served as its president.

After Union-Tribune items columnist Tom Blair, who had replaced Neil Morgan, left in 1995, Diane was invited to take his place on page B-1. In 1997, she earned an items column award from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists.

Diane continued writing columns – more than 4,000 in total – until retiring in July 2023. She also contributed to locally published books, “Aztec Uprising” and “Don Coryell: Win with Honor,” and authored a children’s travel book for Harcourt Brace Jovanovich.

During her reporting career, Diane went undercover to write an expose’ on weapons in San Diego city schools, was driving to work when she witnessed the devastating crash of PSA Flight 182 in 1978 and was one of the first on the scene, sailed on a racing yacht with an all-female crew during the 1995 America’s Cup and, for a travel story, tracked mountain gorillas in Uganda. But she most enjoyed highlighting San Diegans of interest, along with ordinary people doing good deeds and random acts of kindness.

Special Awards: Andy Mace Award for Outstanding Contribution to Public Relations

Georgeanne Irvine

San Diego native Georgeanne “George” Irvine has devoted her career to raising awareness about animals and wildlife conservation.

She is the director of publishing for San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, where she has worked for 45 years, as well as the author of nearly 30 children’s books about wildlife. Her award-winning Hope & Inspiration collection features true stories about individual animals from the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park that have overcome challenges in their lives. These hardcover books are illustrated with photographs and include wildlife facts and conservation information. Her newest book, Teaching Tornero: The True Story of a Sloth Superstar, debuted in May 2023 and Amazing Omeo: A Baby Koala’s True Story of Survival debuts in November 2023.

Prior to publishing, George served in many capacities during her tenure with the Zoo--she worked in public relations and marketing as well as philanthropy. Her duties ranged from being a media spokesperson to escorting celebrities around the Zoo and animals to television shows (such as Johnny Carson’s “Tonight” show) to creating collateral that helped the Zoo raise millions of dollars each year for conservation and new habitats.

Major passions for George include traveling, photography, storytelling, Broadway musicals and, of course, wildlife. She lives for adventure travel and loves seeing animals in their native habitats. Her worldwide expeditions have taken her to many of the wildest places on earth from the jungles of Borneo and South America to the mountains of China and the forests of India to the Outback of Australia and the savannas of Africa. She also enjoys spending time in Alaska’s wild places to observe and photograph brown bears and other North American wildlife.
