Special Awards: Harold Keen Award for Outstanding Contribution to Journalism Jeff McDonald Investigative Reporter The San Diego Union-Tribune Jeff grew up near Santa Monica and was bitten with the news bug at an early age. He relocated to San Diego County in high school and freelanced at the Valley Roadrunner covering Pop Warner football and Little League baseball. He also tinkered with creative writing, so when it came time to pick a college major settled on English.

By graduation, he “figured it might be fun to get paid to ask questions of powerful people and to write about what they say and do.” His first job was a small weekly on the Northern CA coast and from there moved up to night general assignment slot at The UnionTribune in the late 1990s. He says, “I still feel privileged to represent the public in a small way and help inform voters and taxpayers about their elected officials.”

Some of his most impactful stories over the years include: • Rampant theft at the San Diego Food Bank • A deep-dive series on lax regulation of CA and San Diego assisted-living homes.

• The illegal deal over the failed San Onofre nuclear plant that wrongly assigned $5 billion in closure costs to ratepayers rather than utility shareholders • The ongoing deaths inside San Diego County jails, which has the highest mortality rate among CA’s largest counties • The city of San Diego’s terrible record with real estate, which most notably culminated in the now-infamous Ash Street project that has cost $60 million-plus for a building that cannot be occupied.

Special Awards: Andy Mace Award for Outstanding Contribution to Public Relations Scott McGaugh Retired Marketing Director USS Midway Museum Scott McGaugh was the founding (2004) marketing director of the USS Midway Museum and for 16 years was its brand architect. Today, Midway is one of the ten most-popular museums of any type in America. Prior to that, he volunteered with other community leaders for eight years to bring the historic aircraft carrier to San Diego.

Scott worked from 1985 to 1996 for two local San Diego marketing firms, serving clients in hospitality, recreation, agriculture and real estate. He was co-owner of MacCracken & McGaugh from 1996 to 2002, building the marketing communications firm with co-owner Peter MacCracken, expanding by merger on several occasions before focusing fulltime on writing books and the USS Midway Museum.

He has served on several San Diego nonprofit boards of directors and is the author of 10 nonfiction books. He is working on his 11th book, “The Brotherhood of the Flying Coffin,” about the courageous volunteer combat glider pilots of World War II. . The movie rights to a previous book, “Honor Before Glory,” have been optioned and another, “Surgeon in Blue,” was a New York Times bestseller Upon his retirement, Scott said “I’ll forever be grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Midway Magic embodied by the museum’s leadership, staff, volunteers, partners, and members.

They are a remarkable group of San Diegans and I salute each one.”

Special Awards: Jim Reiman Award for Outstanding Media Management Phyllis Pfeiffer President and General Manager U-T Community Press Phyllis Pfeiffer is a long-time champion of community journalism. As president and general manager of U-T Community Press, she is an important member of the executive team that steers not only the community papers, but the efforts of The San Diego Union-Tribune. Her industry credentials and personal character make Phyllis a person of rare insight with good judgment and exceptional leadership skills.

Phyllis began her newspaper career at the La Jolla Light, where she served as publisher from 1977-1987. Phyllis left The Light 34 years ago to become general manager of the Los Angeles Times San Diego Edition. After The Times closed in San Diego, Phyllis headed north to become president and publisher of the Marin Independent Journal. She later became vice president of advertising for the San Francisco Chronicle.

Phyllis’ strategic and brand direction has turned the publications of U-T Community Press into a strong, hyper-local community franchise that includes eleven community newspapers and magazines. Print titles include: La Jolla Light, Del Mar Times, Rancho Santa Fe Review, Solana Beach Sun, Carmel Valley News, Poway News Chieftain, Rancho Bernardo News Journal, Ramona Sentinel, Encinitas Advocate, PB Monthly and Point Loma-OB Monthly.
