Stepping up into a leadership role, Samford-area local Harriet Gow has been named as one of the School Captains this year at Ferny Grove State High School. As part of the Student Executive Leadership Team, Harriet will represent the student body, acting as a liaison between the staff and students.
“I feel extremely privileged and honoured to be chosen by my peers to be their School Captain in 2024. It’s an amazing opportunity for me to be a voice for the students at school and to give back to the FGSHS community which has provided me with so many wonderful opportunities throughout my time in high school,” Harriet said.
Harriet will also act as a representative of FGSHS in the wider community, as well as leading students by example in all aspects of school life.
“Our aim as Captains this year is to encourage students to make the most of their time in high school and participate in every opportunity offered to them. We recently had our school swimming carnival and it was really encouraging to see so many kids participating in races and have
fun throughout the day,” Harriet said.
“We have so many wonderful programs, events and activities here at Ferny which cater to many different fields of interest. I think it’s a real shame when kids are discouraged away from things before they even try them and often it’s because they think they’ll be judged or that they won’t be good at it.”
“To further encourage students to participate, we want to create a space in which people are willing to try new things and explore their interests in a safe and welcome environment.”
One of the Harriet’s favourite subjects is Ancient History, which she says, “teaches
me how to analyse and evaluate sources and information given to us which is really interesting and can reveal things that don’t seem apparent from first glance, such as author bias or societal norms at the time.”
She also loves Physics, to help understand the world around us; “for example, we go from learning about the orbital movements of planets to the forces acting on microscopic particles.”
While Harriet has worked hard to be recognised as school captain, she acknowledges the huge role her support network has played in her achievement.
“I really want to thank my family and friends who had a lot of faith in me and encouraged me to go for this position. They have supported me throughout my entire life and have backed me in whatever endeavours I’ve strived for. That really has made all the difference and has helped me to create a healthy self-image and knowing they believe in me helps me to be more confident in my abilities.”

FAREWELL ANDREW
Like many other Drakes customers, we did not become aware of Andrew’s transfer until after he had left and subsequently did not have the chance to say goodbye.
It would be remiss of us not to acknowledge Andrew’s many years as manager of Drakes Samford.
Every Wednesday, which is when we shop more often than not, we would find Andrew in the lolly aisle with a handful of specials tickets trying to find a home for them. There was an ongoing joke that he should know where they go by now. It was a good opportunity to have a friendly chat.
We will never forget Andrew’s choice of costumes on themed days. Ghoulish Halloween, Superman and the dapper Christmas suit are just some of the memorable ones. He certainly set the bar high for creativity!
Andrew did an excellent job at Drakes Samford. His dedication to providing good customer service did not go unnoticed. We wish Andrew all the best at his new store and hope he knows how much he was appreciated by his Samford customers.

CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 08 MARCH 2024
Celebrating Volunteer Leaders this International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day (IWD) on 8 March celebrates women’s empowerment but is also a chance to recognise those who selflessly give their time to others to make a difference in society. Local women are involved in several community groups and organisations, giving back to something greater than themselves.
This year’s IWD themes ask us to “Invest in Women” and “Inspire Inclusion”. When women are given equal opportunities to earn, learn and lead, entire communities thrive. By taking on management roles in local volunteer organisations, each of the women below continue to harness their capabilities for the wider community.
The Samford and Districts Progress and Protection Association (SDPPA) promotes and protects community interests on behalf of local residents. This year, three women serve on the SDPPA Committee: Leah Hudson (President), Leigh Eagle (Secretary) and Michelle Walsh (Admin and SCHUB Manager).
Leigh Eagle (pictured top middle) has
continually volunteered since her primary school days, most recently finishing her role as the Secretary/Governance Officer for Childhood Cancer Support. After living in the area for the past 11 years, she was keen to share her skills with the SDPPA in a similar role when the position became vacant.
“I have worked in the not-for-profit sector over many years and undertook post graduate studies in Philanthropy and Not-for-Profit studies to support me in those roles. There is so much more to volunteering than just taking the minutes or attending meetings,” Leigh said.
Apart from sharing her skills for a greater purpose, Leigh has found numerous advantages to volunteering.
“For me, it’s about connecting with
people and having a good laugh with likeminded colleagues, being across local issues that matter to the wider community and putting my 40+ years of work experience to good use.”
Michelle Walsh (pictured below) similarly volunteers her time as she believes in the ideals of the SDPPA and has found a range of benefits to volunteering for an organisation with larger community interests at its heart.
“Volunteering with the people where you live, work and play is important to all parties involved. You can see the need when it arises and want to help immediately if required,” she said. Continued over
Page 4 - THE VILLAGE PUMP 08 MARCH 2024
“As a child, I witnessed my mother helping at Tuckshop and Meals on Wheels and my grandmother helping at the local thrift shop. I now realise the gratification one receives from bringing happiness to others,” said Michelle.
Putting her baking skills to a greater purpose, Margerite Ungerer (pictured below) volunteers at the QCWA as treasurer, show coordinator and district judge. She is also well-known locally for donating her homemade cakes and biscuits to local fundraisers.
“I like the sisterhood and serving the community. CWA is an interest group that aligns with my personal interests and values,” Margerite said.
After moving to Australia from South Africa, Margerite was keen to connect with the local community, meet new people and learn more about the local area.
“It is important when you retire or move interstate or from overseas (like myself) to get involved to feel connected. It also keeps you busy and gives you a purpose in life while meeting wonderful people and other supportive women.”
The Samford Support Network (SSN) provides a wide range of individual caring and support services within the community, including transport, social networks and
emergency support.
Karen Reid, Margit Rust, Keria Newman and Kate Boddington are four women on the SSN Management Committee, again giving their time to a cause greater them themselves.
“Providing transport in an area that lacks public transport is so vital for our clients whether it is a hospital appointment, a shopping trip, or an opportunity to connect with other local people. It is a privilege to be able to help, support, have fun and care for some of our local community members and help them have that sense of community and connection,” they said.
administrative role for Defence after 43 years of service in the Army, during which time she saw a notable cultural shift in the Defence force, as it continues to work towards greater gender inclusion and further investment in women.
“Women have achieved positive change throughout history by giving their time to a cause they believed in. Every single one of them deserves a medal.”
A growing Samford community means organisations like SSN welcomes new volunteers to help support clients. Anyone interested in joining a small but great team of volunteers can email secretary@ samfordsupportnetwork.com and they will arrange to have a chat about how you can help.
Understandably, there may be a concern about fitting volunteering in with the rest of our busy lives, but each of these women volunteer alongside full-time and part-time jobs, or other voluntary roles.
Michelle Walsh and her husband run a local building contractor business, while Margerite Ungerer volunteers as a delivery aide and fundraising contributor at Meals on Wheels Samford, and also helps out at Samford Bowls Club functions.
Leigh Eagle continues to work in an
“I am proud to have been part of a new age of women entering into the services; we had obstacles to overcome in what was traditionally a male-dominated workplace but the women I worked alongside helped shape and shift that culture so that gender parity continues to develop across the Defence force and wider public service and into our communities in general,” Leigh said.
“IWD is a day for everyone irrespective of gender to reflect on how far we have come and acknowledge that we still have a way to go. When I look at the volunteer groups in our Samford community I see a commitment that heartens me; seeing women and men and children connecting and working together for a common cause. It’s fabulous!”
Leah Hudson was unavailable for interview for this article. We will bring you her story in a future edition.

On International Women’s Day, we remember those women who came before us, challenging the norms and achieving great things. One of them is Pat Marks.
ELIZABETH NESTA ‘PAT’ MARKS AO
(28 April 1918 –25 October 2002).
Born in Dublin, Ireland. Elizabeth was affectionately known as Pat throughout her life. An only child, Pat and her parents returned to Australia in 1920, when she was 2. From an early age, Pat excelled in swimming. At the age of 5 she was given her first horse, where she later became an accomplished horsewoman. While at UQ, she actively participated in hockey. It was her grandfather’s farm at Camp Mountain
near Samford where she spent weekends, enabling her to enjoy the company of horses.
Pat attended St. John’s Cathedral in Brisbane and Glennie Memorial School in Toowoomba. She had dreams of becoming a vet but was persuaded and encouraged by her father, Edward Marks, to pursue entomology, so she attended the University of Queensland. With further studies over a number of years and some time spent overseas, she received many degrees. Parasitology of marsupials, biological control of mosquitoes (I did read she thought Samford was the perfect place to study these blood sucking pests), malaria, dengue fever.
All in all, Pat described some 38 new mosquito species, as well as new species of fruit flies, bugs, cockroaches, and ticks. Dr. Marks (Pat), an entomologist, also fought
many battles with her co-workers and the government to enforce the importance of sharing their discoveries with other museums. Finally, after many years, the regulation would disappear from the Act. An accomplished speaker and an expert in her field, she was a regular speaker at many different organisations. In 1955, two entomologists named a mosquito they collected in her honour, Culex marksae, also the Corethrella midge, Corethrella marksae.
As with us all, age catches up, and so it was time the Marks farm was sold off, but the old cottage now exists at the Queensland University of Technology’s Samford Ecological Research Facility (SERF), at 148 Upper Camp Mountain Road, Samford.
Pat joined the Samford Historical Society. She researched and championed the protection of the Samford Bora Rings (indigenous ceremonial sites) in the 1970s. She retired to Samford in 1982, raising and riding horses until the age of 80.
Dr Patricia (Pat) Marks, a lady well before her time. A respected human being, especially with her fellow scientists. And so much knowledge, which has all been documented and recorded for prosperity.

PLANNING SUSTAINABLE EVENTS
Have you ever been to an event and thought “What happens to all that wasted food”? Maybe you’ve pondered why only bottled water is available, and had trouble finding recycling bins? Or been glad you’re not paying the energy bill for the dazzling displays? Such thoughts hint at opportunities for more sustainable events.
Any event can be planned with sustainability in mind, from a workshop, conference, or sports event to a Christmas party, school fair or wedding. If you’re responsible for an event, your decisions shape its environmental, social and economic impact.
Once you set sustainability goals for an event, you’ll find there are lots of ways to achieve them. Cut carbon, protect natural resources, minimise waste, eliminate plastic and make a positive contribution to the local economy. In the process, you’ll create a more rewarding experience (and reduce costs).
To get started, review which aspects of an event impact sustainability. This depends on the type and scale of an event. For instance, the top contributors to a wedding’s carbon footprint are travel, number of guests, food (especially meat) and imported flowers.
Other negative impacts of weddings include confetti, plastics and balloons. Where do you think a balloon ends up when it flies off into the sky? Sadly, often in the stomach of wildlife. Alternatives include paper streamers, flags, found objects, or bubbles (using eco-detergents). And instead of confetti, throw flower petals.
For any event, even minor decisions impact sustainability. For starters, the time of year/day affects energy needed for lighting and heating or cooling a venue. It also affects who can attend. For inclusivity, choose times that don’t clash with family responsibilities or finish too late for public transport. Try to select a venue with easy access to transport and cycling or walking routes. Offer group transport options like carpooling or minibuses.
Catering is another key aspect. Minimise food waste through effective planning, partnerships with food charities, and composting leftovers. Provide reusable or compostable eating implements and
containers. Offer local, organic, seasonal food with lots of non-meat options. Rather than plastic bottles, provide water refilling stations.
If it’s a formal or themed event, why not insist people wear something they already own rather than buying or hiring a new outfit? That will save resources (and money!). Another area is décor. Choose reusable props and decorations made from compostable materials. Look for local, seasonal flowers from florists who don’t use unsustainable floral foam.
If you’re giving away gifts or freebies, choose those made from recycled or sustainable materials – but only if they are useful! Who wants a plastic bag full of useless nick-nacks? Rather than physical gifts, consider providing experiences that give back to the community (e.g. sponsor a charity, plant a tree, or lay a paving stone).
These are just a few pointers to get you started. For more tips, go to greenstreet.net. au and read the latest ‘Inspiration’ post, or see the comprehensive ‘Guide to Planning Sustainable Events’ in the Resources section.

From Little Things Big Things Grow
There’s a new B&B in the area but not as we traditionally know it. PlantingSeeds is a not-for-profit sustainability program with a mission to help threatened pollinators and plants by creating local B&B Highways: Bed and Breakfasts for Birds, Bees and Biodiversity.
Through a Community Bank Samford grant, the program has blossomed in the Samford and Pine Rivers Region, through partnerships with local schools.
“By working in schools to ‘join the dots’ by planting native species and attracting birds, bees and other pollinators, we can help regeneration. The more schools, the more regeneration,” PlantingSeeds Founder & CEO, Dr Judy Friedlander, said.
“This Community Bank Samford grant has enabled the highway to extend in this vital region. We are aware of pressures of human urban development and we need to impart and teach skills in local plants and pollinators and how to identify and evaluate our initiatives. This funding has helped enable that locally,” she said.
“The Samford area is very beautiful with many areas of thick forest and farmland close to the small town so both amenities and nature are very accessible. Unfortunately, there is also a lot of deforestation for development. There are lots of opportunities to support and enhance unique species and biodiversity.”
PlantingSeeds worked with students at Strathpine State School, Strathpine West School, Pine Rivers Special School, and Samford Valley Steiner School to plant native plants on school grounds and provide constructed habitats.
Each school had its own special connection to environment. Adjacent to a nature reserve and creek, Strathpine State School is no stranger to a local koala in
its school ground trees. Strathpine West School created campus corridors to extend opportunities for pollinators. Pine Rivers Special School sits in a koala corridor, placing it in a unique position to help local wildlife. Each student at Samford Valley Steiner School engages in the vegetable patch as part of their lessons, making observations about animals that visit the gardens regularly.
“Our program is both educational and practical and the resources, developed with the Department of Education and the CSIRO’s Atlas of Living Australia, are evidence-based,” Dr Friedlander said.
“Students learn about the special species in their area and how they can plant shrubs, ground covers and trees to attract native birds and insects. Additionally, they learn how to take citizen science observations to upload to the Atlas of Living Australia.”
The program has been buzzing with positive feedback from other regions where
it has cultivated roots.
“We implemented the B&B Highway program in eight schools in the City of Parramatta in NSW and then was asked to extend the program in five more schools,” Dr Friedlander said.
“Some corporates are starting to take notice and we offer a ‘Lunch and Learn’ session with the companies then sponsoring schools in their area.”
Through its positive, practical and scalable programs, PlantingSeeds is countering biodiversity loss one seedling at a time, with the team under Dr Friedlander teaching a new generation the importance of treading lightly in the future.
“Students and teachers know they are contributing to something local, and larger, in a real highway of regeneration. We hope to do many more educational and practical sessions with Samford as a pivotal hub!”

Bushcare
Our next Councilassisted bushcare working bee will be on Sunday 10 March from 2pm to 4pm. We would love more people to join our group of enthusiastic volunteers. This month we aim to plant more trees and shrubs in the river bank planting P4, thus increasing the density of vegetation to achieve canopy closure sooner, which reduces germination of many weed species. Unfortunately, the very large Sandpaper Fig just below the picnic table collapsed in the recent floods so we will be planting some advanced trees nearby to provide shade in future years. After the recent rain, there is also lot of weeding to do across the whole site, so we are hoping for a big turn out.
Bird survey
During our latest Eco-Corridor survey on 28 February, our team recorded an impressive 68 species following the usual route. This total is just one shy of the record set in March 2021. The undoubted highlight was seeing a male White-headed Pigeon evade a chasing Collared Sparrowhawk (pictured) by landing in the dense canopy of a tall Weeping Lillypilly by the waterhole.
Other notable sightings were three groups of Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos gracefully flying low overhead and two Spectacled Monarchs foraging in vines at the top of the hill. Summer visitors still hanging around included Sacred Kingfisher, Channelbilled Cuckoo, Pacific Koel and Common Cicadabird. Full details are on eBird.

Home Batteries Taking Charge
The increasing cost of electricity has given rise to a growing interest in home solar batteries to store excess solar-generated electricity for use at night or on low-sunlight days. Local residents Richard Llewellyn and Anne Brown recently took charge of their electricity supply, installing an inverter battery storage system and EV charger at their Mount Samson home.
After enjoying the benefits of solar hot water and solar panels for the past 20 years, Richard and Anne were keen to further their transition to renewable energy.
“With the feed-in price for solar now pretty low and as we had just acquired an electric car, the decision to get a battery was pretty clear to us,” Richard said.
Dan Farrell from Tactical Power did the extra work, which included adding more solar panels to take the home’s total to 10kw, as well as installing a 7kw home charger and 24kwh Brisbane-made RedEarth battery.
To mitigate risk, the battery is installed in a well-ventilated spot under the house, far away from any flammable materials.
“Dan and his crew at Tactical Power were great, answering all our questions and they made the installation really easy,” Richard said.
Throughout Australia, batteries are becoming increasingly popular. According to solar analytics company Sunwiz, approximately 180,000 home storage batteries have been installed throughout the country as of 2023. About one third of those were an addition to an existing solar panel system, while the remainder formed part of a completely new solar installation.
While there is still a way to go for government subsidies to be implemented to increase home battery take-up, Richard and Anne are extremely pleased with the results of their latest installation.
“It’s been great. We have been able to charge the car and over the last few weeks used a lot of air conditioning and we still are coming out with a credit on our power bill,” Richard said.
“We have done over 50,000km in the electric car in the last two years; 95 per cent charged from home.”

Native Plants Market Is Back
23 March – Samford Showgrounds
With so much moisture in the ground after the summer rains, now is the perfect time to plant that new garden bed or revegetation project you been thinking about. The timing of NPQ’s Autumn Plants Market on Saturday 23 March at the Samford Showgrounds couldn’t be better. Growers from all over South-East Queensland will be selling a huge range of native plants in the barn at reasonable prices. Many of the species are not commonly available at mainstream commercial nurseries and some are rare in cultivation. There will be bush food plants, butterfly host plants, cottage garden flowers, bird-attracting plants, indoor plants and many more (see list at npq.org.au released a few days beforehand). You will also be able to get expert advice for all your native plant needs.
3289
Mint Bush (Prostanthera sieberi)
Come along and support your local Samford Branch (Grower number 10), who will be able to help you select the right plants for your garden, whether you live on an acreage property or have a smaller block in the village. Doors open at 9am. We recommend getting there early for the best selection.
We look forward to great support from the Samford community again this year.

CEDAR CREEK BUSHCARE
Helping the Bush Regenerate Itself
Many Samford Valley residents and those in Brisbane’s north-west have experienced the natural beauty of Cedar Creek and its surrounding bushland. Unfortunately non-native, invasive weed species are increasingly finding their way into the ecosystem.
Over the last three years, a small but dedicated group guided by the exceptional knowledge and care of the environmental
staff from the Moreton Bay Regional Council, have been caring for the banks of the creek. We remove weeds to allow the native species to thrive, plant new plants to stabilise precious soil and create habitat and food for native animals, including some endangered species.
Keeping the upper catchment of Cedar Creek weed free not only benefits the immediate creek area, the waterways the creek flows into will also have less weeds.
Seeking Additional Volunteers
Our group is small, very friendly, and a mix of ages and genders. New volunteers are always welcome. No experience is necessary, you work at your own pace and the knowledge gained identifying weeds and the many wonderful native species can be used in caring for your own back yard.
If you are looking for a hobby, just want to catch up with a few friendly locals, or can get a few hours off work by doing a volunteer program, we are the group for you. All tools and insurance are provided by MBRC.
We meet every second Thursday of the month 8:30am to 10:30am at Andy Williams Park, Cedar Creek.
Our next meeting is Thursday 14th March. Please phone Fiona on 0421 071 412 with any queries.

Who’s Who @ SAMS Meet Jim!
Born in England to a Welsh mum and Irish dad, he loved sport in the early years but discovered his lack of natural talent the hard way, so became an engineering apprentice for Rolls Royce Aero Engines instead. But he did play rugby for his school, table tennis for the Youth Club Championships, and shared a house in Germany with 11 feisty Irishmen, so did get involved in some type of sport. Later he took up Judo, got his Black Belt, and ended up teaching the martial art in Bahrain, having accepted a job with Gulf Air. While working there for many years, he received a whopping 90% discount on flights and was elevated to the post of Unofficial Lookout for his Sheik boss during Ramadan. He’d probably still be there but his Judo gig was shut down by the government.
Finding himself back in the UK soon after, he was initiated as a Freemason and installed as Master of his Lodge in 2003.
Around that time, his son got a year’s working visa in Australia and liked it so much that he stayed. Then his daughter left the UK for NZ and never went back, and later his sister left for Perth and also never went back. He wonders if he should have taken the hint.
Meanwhile he worked for British Aerospace a bit, then started his own Air Cell manufacturing business. Many successful years later he sold it on a Saturday and flew to Brisbane on the Monday to retire, joining SAMS in 2015. Almost immediately, he put on his hard hat and made it his mission
to engineer the heck out of our Shed and take it from its single working bay to the amazing facility it is today.
Unfortunately he couldn’t engineer his way out of a severe crustacean allergy that goes back to the ’70s, but has luckily kept the attacks to just a handful, thanks to the tireless diligence of his lovely Food Inspector wife. We at SAMS do our bit to help too, constantly reminding him how delicious our giant-sized prawns, crabs, bugs and lobsters are, compared to his wimpy shrimps back home!
Please check SAMS’ website samfordshed. org.au, enquire at samssecretary1@gmail. com, or visit us at 38 Showgrounds Drive, Highvale, next to the Showgrounds entrance.

Pilates Lifestyle and Wellbeing
It was interesting to see Channel 7 reporting on the concern of the Pilates Association Australia regarding injuries that have occurred during Reformer Pilates classes. It has been a long term concern of mine how up until now, little monitoring of Pilates studios, equipment and instructors has been conducted.
High end marketing companies are capitalising on the unsuspecting public who have found affordable, fun classes without realising the real risks involved. Worse still, people without an anatomical background have been “trained” over a short period of time and are led to believe they are a fully qualified Pilates instructor. Nothing can be further from the truth.
On offer is a buffet of different types of Pilates all under the guise of Joseph Pilates’ specific body training. These specific exercises were never meant to be a gym workout. They are specifically designed to nurture a controlled strengthening of the stabilising muscles of the body, as a form of body conditioning, with the aim of being more productive in a chosen physical movement dynamic - be that ballet, contemporary dance, gymnastics, swimming or any field sports. As time has gone by, it also became apparent that Pilates exercises are invaluable in the rehabilitation of both injured bodies, for those with certain pathologies, and for the development of
strong muscle pattern development to assist with everyday demands of the sedentary person.
To become a fully qualified Pilates Instructor takes years and thousands of dollars invested in authorised, internationally recognised training companies. In my experience you will not find a fully qualified Pilates instructor under 30 years of age, it simply cannot be achieved.
Pilates Lifestyle and Wellbeing is committed to continuing to uphold the disciplined and strong understanding of Joseph Pilates’ original exercises. All instructors keep up to date with the latest findings from bio-mechanical research and maintain Continuing Education Credits required by the MERRITHEW training company based in Canada. We offer the best equipment option, kept in pristine condition for our clients to enjoy a professional, safe and individually guided premium Pilates experience. Below are a few words from current clients. More testimonials are on our website.
“Dorothy and Jacq at Pilates Lifestyle and Wellbeing offer both Mat and Reformer classes in a clean, air-conditioned setting. The small sized classes are always well organised with a variety of exercised using a large breadth of ancillary equipment to keep things fun and interesting. This also allows the instructors to offer variations to each exercise that can target the skill level of each participant and focus on personalised corrections of position and technique.” – Amanda
“If you’re looking for caring and experienced instructors then Pilates Lifestyle and Wellbeing studio is the place to go! I had been enthusiastically participating in Mat and Reformer classes at the Pilates Lifestyle and Wellbeing studio for many years and my fitness has never been so good! During the pandemic I suffered a major health setback which hindered my
mobility. I have recently re-engaged with the studio and with Dorothy, who is working with me to rebuild my health and fitness.
Dorothy’s vast experience and attention to detail in developing a suitable program for my needs makes me feel confident I will achieve my goals.” – Janelle

Autumn Home Selling Advantage
As autumn sets in, the question of whether it’s a good time to sell your property arises. Here’s why this season might be opportune.
With the chaos of Christmas and summer holidays behind, autumn marks a return to routine, prompting potential buyers to focus on significant life decisions like buying a home. Many utilise their summer break for research and financial planning, readying themselves for property pursuits in autumn.
The moderate temperatures of autumn, compared to extremes of summer and winter, make home viewings more enjoyable. Additionally, the vibrant colours of autumn foliage enhance the appeal of gardens, attracting buyers who appreciate natural beauty.
Autumn typically sees fewer properties on the market compared to spring, increasing visibility and competition for available homes, potentially leading to quicker sales and better prices.
However, selling timing shouldn’t rely solely on the season. Consider factors like property type, location and target demographics.
For those eyeing autumn sales, consider listing early in the season before distractions like sports seasons and holidays kick in.

Samford Museum
Recently, the Samford Museum received this Dolls House which is now on display. The two sisters who it was made for came to the Museum and spent a couple of hours reliving old memories as they put the furniture back in. Here is the story of how it came to me.
John Featherstone was born in Shoreditch, London in 1924. From an early age, he was always interested in making things, especially from wood. His father was a wood sawyer, as was his grandfather. He was self-taught and later went on to build bigger things like wooden toys and furniture.
The Tudor style doll’s house was made for his granddaughter, Jennifer in 1984. He designed it to look like buildings he had admired around Holborn in London where he had lived as a child. The furniture is modelled on items belonging to John’s grandparents. John came to Australia with his family in 1964.
The doll’s house features living rooms upstairs and the “Berwick Tea Rooms” and “Berwick Bakery” downstairs. It took
around one year of painstaking work to complete the doll’s house and it includes 2640 hand-cut roof tiles and over 900 floorboards.
There is acute attention to detail, including a four-poster bed, a gramophone, baby’s cradle and even a tiny bible on the bedside table. The bakery had miniature sacks of flour, barley and sugar, pork pies, bread, wedding cakes and even tiny paper bags hanging on the end of the counter for customers to put their goods in. The English tea rooms had wooden dressers with knives and forks in the drawers and a lady sitting with her knitting, which John knitted on two tiny nails.
In 2023, John lives in Berwick, Victoria and is 99 years old.

THREE CHEERS
I live at Cedar Creek and have enjoyed its beauty for nigh on 27 years now. It is very important for me to be able to continue living in my little piece of paradise. I suffer from Advanced Emphysema and am on 24/7 home oxygen. My mobility is now very compromised thus making me basically bedridden. Samford Support Network have helped me in so many ways over the years both with their compassion and willingness to help me in whatever way they can to give me quality of life.
I would especially like to thank a couple of the Samford Network team who often pop in for a cuppa and a chat. Their warm disposition and great sense of humour is enough to brighten up anyone’s day.
Samford and surrounds are very lucky to have such a dedicated team of volunteers to help those in need. They are a credit to our community. Let us all give a very big three cheers to all the volunteers of Samford Support Network.

Samford Bowls Club
Our club is full of remarkable members and the Samford community is busting with remarkable people as our voyage through the last flood event has shown. One of our newer, younger members stood up at the club after the massive clean-up and spoke from the heart about the drive from our older members and how it affected him watching them work tirelessly through the week. Thanks David Englebright for your kind words.
We may not be able to use all our rinks, but we are back doing the best that we can with what we have. On 18th February we hosted 50 plus bowlers from the Sunshine Coast Social Club. Samford members joined in to enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by our ladies and an afternoon on the green. Thank you to The Movement Team for their sponsorship of this event.
Another of our Bring a Friend, ‘Friendship Days’ was held on Tuesday 5th March. Proudly and generously sponsored by Samford Grove Retirement Village, these days are a fun way of giving bowls a try before you commit. If you missed this one there will be others during the year, or you can contact our club and Janice will be happy to show you how it’s done.
Village Barefoot Bowls update. Due to the damage to our flood lights caused by the recent flood, we are unable to hold this season of Village Barefoot Bowls. We are investigating all our options and hope to remedy this situation if possible. Check out our Facebook page for any updates or contact Allan 0429 919 486.
Competitions
Samford members are busy representing our club in various competitions that take our members to many different bowls clubs and bring other clubs to ours. We have teams in the K M Smith competition, the BDBA (Brisbane District Bowls Association) Summer Competition, the BDBA Ladies Autumn Pennants, the weekly Vets (70 and Older) competition, and a ladies team nominated for the BDBA triples competition. Bowlers are also playing in the club competitions trying to catch up on delays caused by the flood. This may sound like we don’t have time for a social game of bowls, but many of our members prefer to do just that and enjoy their Tuesday mornings and afternoons, Wednesday mornings and Saturday afternoons having a social game.
Many members stayed behind on Saturday 24th to help celebrate the birthday of one of our special members, Ken Gibson who turned 93. Congratulations Ken from us all.
Lawn Bowls is a game played by all ages. Most people think of it as a game to take up when you retire, but we bowlers know differently. There are many young players playing in the under 12 and under 18 competitions. There is the school competition held each year at Club Pine Rivers. The young workers who are busy with work and families fill the greens to
play Barefoot Bowls in the evenings whilst having a social drink and networking. Then the lucky ones who can play many times a week because they no longer have to work.

NATIVE BAUHINIA
If you are looking for a drought-tolerant plant to take pride of place in your garden, the native bauhinia (Lysiphullum hookerii) is worth considering. This shrub or small tree (growing to 12m high) has a trunk about 50cm in diameter with a spreading crown. It is predominantly evergreen, although in very dry conditions can shed many of its leaves. The natural distribution of this plant is from Central to Northern Qld in habitats ranging from rainforest to open forest. In its natural environment, the indigenous people used to harvest the gum and the flower nectar as a sweet treat. Due to its resilience and attractive appearance, it has been cultivated widely throughout Australia.
Like all bauhinias, Lysiphyllum hookerii has compound leaves with a single pair of leaflets, the arrangement looking like the wings of a butterfly. White flowers with long red stamen and a delicate perfume, that occur at any time during the year after rainfall, form a spectacular display. Flat, brown pods containing many seeds follow. It is a leguminous plant and as such is important in fixing atmospheric nitrogen into nitrates, which promotes better plant growth and general soil fertility.

Announcement:
There will be no Thank Goodness it’s Friday event in March at the Cedar Creek Public Hall.
It’s been a great start to the year with a good turnout for our January and February TGIF events.
it is always wonderful to see so many members of the community coming together to enjoy these gatherings. We are truly grateful for everyone’s support, as these events play a crucial role in fundraising for the hall.
Unfortunately, the March TGIF coincides with Good Friday, and we have made the decision to skip this month’s event. We look forward to seeing you back at the April TGIF and hope it will be a well-attended event to make up for the missed fundraising opportunity in March.
It was lovely to see the hall host another wedding which was held on the 29th of February, recent fund raising has assisted to upgrade lighting around the hall making it much nicer for our hires and our TGIF events.
It is also great to see the yoga classes
back in full swing, or should we say, full stretch! You can check out the halls website calendar for class info.
We are looking forward to hosting our Welcome to Winter Soup Day again this year and hope you can mark your calendar for the 16th of June. We’re excited to announce Asleep at the Reel will be playing again at this event and we’re also putting out a call for anyone interested to have a stall at the Welcome to Winter Soup Day to please send expressions of interest to belinda.worden@ austaron.com.au.

Flood of 5th February
1931 – Williams Street
Floods in January and February are nothing new to the district. The township of Terrors Creek (now Dayboro) as we know it had not been established at the time of the major floods in February 1893. James Kinkead Berry had built a store and residence in what is now McKenzie Street in 1887 and on 6th July 1892 obtained a licence for the original Crown Hotel. Charles Adsett had established his blacksmith shop on the corner of Williams & Bradley Streets by 1892. The Queenslander of 11th February 1893 reported “…great damage is done to
the farms on the South Pine and some on the Upper North Pine…”
The Brisbane Courier of 9th February 1931 reported “…Thousands of pounds’ worth of damage has been caused to roads in the Dayboro district owing to the deluge there on Thursday…Over nine inches of rain fell in nine hours on Thursday morning, and old pioneers state there was more water than in the 1893 flood. Five homes were abandoned, and there was 3ft. of water in the main street. The water was 9in. deep in the Dayboro Butter Factory, and all communication with Brisbane was severed. Several yards of earth was washed away on the railway line, leaving the sleepers
suspended in the air…Several landslides have occurred on the main road to Ocean View, and on the partly constructed road between Dayboro and Mt. Mee.
The damage on the partly constructed Dayboro-Mt. Mee main road is estimated at between £6000 and £8000. Hundreds of pounds’ worth of fencing has been destroyed. Approaches to the new bridges over the Pine River at Lacey’s Creek and Armstrong Creek were badly damaged, and the Petrie road also suffered badly. The telephone service was disorganised from Thursday to Saturday afternoon.”
Note: 9 inches = 228.6mm; 3 feet = 914. mm. “Dayboro Cottage” is the second building on the left in the photo.
The Courier Mail of 1st February 1944 reported “…Rivers Rising…Pine-Dayboro, 5.25 pm., 10ft. 6in., rising…”
The Telegraph of 15th February 1945 reported “…Havoc at Dayboro; Houses and dairy buildings were unroofed in the worst storm in the history of Dayboro yesterday afternoon. Household electric light lines were severed by flying tree limbs and the town was inundated…”
The Brisbane Telegraph of 16th February 1953 reported “…5ins. Already in City…A report from Dayboro, 230 miles north of Brisbane, says that furniture was removed from business houses in the main street this afternoon when flood waters covered the street.
The town has been deluged by more than six inches of rain in less than 24 hours. The water in the street was over the concrete kerbing of the new Terror’s Creek bridge at Dayboro.
The road to Mt. Mee, where seven inches of rain had fallen up to midday, has been badly washed out…”
And one week later The Courier Mail of 23rd February 1953 reported “…Twenty seven miles north of Brisbane, shopkeepers at Dayboro had to move all articles from bottom shelves of their shops as Terror’s Creek flood water poured into the town’s main street. Late last night more than 700 tons of earth blocked the road three miles north of Dayboro. The landslide is not expected to be cleared until late tomorrow…”
Fifty years ago, there was the Australia Day flood in 1974. More recently the floods of 11th January 2011, February 2022 and February 2024 have occurred.

25th Birthday Celebrations
Oh! what a night it was for our VIEW Club ladies, dressed in white and silver with just a touch of bling to make the night sparkle. Our hostess’s Lyn and Trish welcomed members and special visitors -National Councillor Lyall, Zone Councillor Judy, two lovely View members from the Redcliffe View Branch, Rosina and Vicki and the ladies from Arana View Club.
The dinner was not only a Birthday celebration, it was also an opportunity to recognise Helen, Shayne and Denise for their 10 years of continuous service to VIEW. They were presented with a Decade Pin by the Zone Councillor.
Guest speaker Terry entertained us all with a number of hilarious stories relating to his experiences as a local storekeeper before the birthday cake was cut by past Presidents, Helen, Shayne, Christine, Dos, Trish, Lyall and Lyn. There was not a sound to be heard as the ladies enjoyed their piece of cake.
VIEW provides women with the opportunity to meet regularly with other women from all walks of life, establish lasting friendships and help disadvantaged Australian children through supporting the work of children’s charity The Smith Family and their Learning for Life Program.
The Brendale evening VIEW Club meets in the evenings and supports eight Learning for Life students.
Upcoming Events
19th March: Next Dinner meeting and we will celebrate early with an Easter Raffle night. Our guest speaker will be Susanne Jones from Just Better Care, one of Australia’s largest providers of national in-home aged care and disability support.
30th March: All hands on deck for our first Sausage Sizzle fundraising event at Brendale Bunnings, one of many fundraising activities this year.
If you are unable to make the dinner meeting, what about joining us for a ‘Coffee and Chat’ on the first Saturday of the month. We start at 10am at White’s Coffee Co. in the Bracken Ridge Tavern.
Our dinner meetings are held at 7.00pm on the third Tuesday of the month at Aspley Hornets Football Club, Carseldine. Bookings required. You will be most welcomed. Contact Shayne on 0409 991 428 for bookings and further information.

DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT
LOCAL GOVT ELECTIONS
Nominations for the Local Government Elections on 16 March closed on 13 January. I am very pleased and humbled that I will be elected unopposed. The City of Moreton Bay Mayor role also had no other nominations, which means sitting Mayor Peter Flannery will be re-elected unopposed - a very unusual and unprecedented occurrence.
Elections for Local Government are conducted by an independent statutory authority, the Queensland Electoral Commission, and I understand that they will notify residents of Division 11, along with residents in the other divisions across Moreton Bay where Councillors were unopposed, that they will not be required to vote on 16 March.
The last four years have seen some great projects delivered across the Division. It has been such an incredible privilege to work with many community groups, sporting clubs, schools, businesses, organisations and individuals and together we have achieved some fantastic outcomes. This was

certainly evident with the recent weather events, where the community rallied around providing assistance to those affected by flooding.
I am very proud to represent Division 11 and I look forward to working with the community for the next four years. I’ve already hit the ground running to deliver some exciting projects which are in their final phases of design and will soon commence construction.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your continued support. Once the elections have concluded and results are known, there is a lot that is required before the new Council is sworn in and we can kick off with the first General Meeting for the new Council. This should happen some time before the end of April, all going well. If you need to contact me, you can call my office on 3480 6455 or email darren.grimwade@moretonbay.qld.gov.au.

Containers for Change support
Thanks to the generosity of Samford and Dayboro residents, Samford RDA received $859 in total RDA donations from a recent Containers for Change fundraiser, and more than $1,000 with ongoing donations from Containers for Change.
The RDA Day fundraiser held recently by Containers for Change Samford and Dayboro encouraged people to donate one cent to RDA from each container refunded. The response of almost 46,000 donated containers was outstanding, and greatly appreciated.
Samford RDA (Riding for the Disabled Association) is a not-for-profit organisation operating from its centre at Samford
Showgrounds and supporting children and adults living with a disability. The funding of its program relies heavily on fundraising, and Containers for Change has become a key income stream for the volunteer group.
Jason Cartright from Containers for Change Samford and Dayboro said: “Since we started, we have been able to help registered charities, including RDA, raise over $30,000, and over $20,000 for local community groups. It’s one of the best things about what we do.”
The new President of Samford RDA, Michael Costello, thanked the Samford community for its continuing support.
“The residents, businesses and various community groups in the Samford area are our greatest supporters,” he said. “They sponsor our centre and our horses, and they are always willing to support any fundraising events that keep our program operating. Our volunteers and supporters are the backbone of Samford RDA; we couldn’t do it without them.”
Samford RDA currently has about 55 participants. The program uses horse riding to build core body strength and improve balance, coordination, communication skills and self-confidence. Learn more about how we work and how you can get involved. www.samfordrda.com.au

THE READER ON THE 6.27
Jean-Paul Didierlaurent
Translated from French by Rose Swartz.
Every day, Guylain Vignolles catches the 6.27am train to his job at a book pulping factory, the home of murderous Thing, which destroys what he loves most — words. At each day’s end, he rescues a few pages from destroyed books caught in The Thing’s innards, drying them carefully at home so that he can read these random pages aloud the next morning on his daily commute. As Guylain breathes life back into the fragments of dead books, he gradually connects with his fellow travellers.
Outside work, Guylain’s lonely life revolves around his goldfish, and visiting Giuseppe, formerly chief operator at the factory, who lost his legs right up to his thighs in the belly of The Thing, which was accidentally activated while he was servicing it. Giuseppe is determined to locate all the books printed on the recycled paper made on the day of his accident to reclaim himself, Guylain helps him. One morning, Guylain finds a memory stick which holds the diary of a young woman, Julie, who works as a lavatory attendant in a shopping mall. As Guylain reads it to his train companions, he is smitten, and they are entranced. So he must find her.
Didierlaurent’s prose is simple and his characterisation vivid. His novel is about the invisible, the ordinary unnoticed people who often have their own unexpected stories. It underscores society’s prejudices against those who are different, it shows that the clothes do not always make the man. It is, foremost, a declaration of love for words and for reading and how they influence people’s lives. All the characters have a close relationship with words - the words they read, the words they speak and finally their words of love.
Jenni Guse let me read her copy which I, reluctantly, have to return, but a copy will soon sit on my bookshelf. It’s a must read. Chase it down.

I’LL LET MYSELF IN Hannah Diviney
I’ll Let Myself
In , written by Australian author Hannah Diviney, reflects life lived with Cerebral Palsy. It isn’t just about her extraordinary life (so far), but shows readers of all diverse backgrounds that change is possible through advocacy and awareness. It encourages people not to sit around and wait for that change to happen, but instead, to be the change you wish to see in the world.
BOOK REVIEWS
Hannah knew her experiences in life would always be different from those around her. I’ll Let Myself In clearly demonstrates this; but what makes her story so profound and provides evidence of the changes that need to occur, is her attitude and ability to make changes happen regardless of the personal cost to her as an individual. My own autobiography No Ordinary Girl has many similarities. As I read Hannah’s, I could identify with some of her challenges and experiences that living with a disability presents (mainly those relating to education and access).
Hannah’s desire to and success with breaking down barriers is something which I have personally taken from reading this book. Her character is unique, which all of us can take something from. Her journey may have started a little differently and with more difficulty, but now she has not only caught up, but has soared ahead to become a person of influence.
When I was reading this book, I laughed and I cried, but most of all I was left with a feeling of empowerment; a reality check that change is happening.

DICKSON NOTES
A busy few weeks!
The new parliamentary year started on 6 February, and I’m determined to continue to hold the Albanese Labor Government accountable for their growing list of broken promises. I’ve been busy visiting various areas in Dickson, participating in local events and supporting our local businesses. The increasing cost of living is impacting Australian families and small businesses significantly. Therefore, my focus is on finding solutions that benefit both our community and country.
School leaders
Congratulations to all the school leaders in both our local primary and high schools who received Senior Student and Student Leader badges. I wish you all the very best for the year ahead.
Backing Local Businesses
I’m regularly out and about in Dickson engaging with local businesses and community organisations discussing the issues important to them and helping in any way I can. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Nick from The Mini Farm Project, where I took a tour of the farm area. (pictured) We talked about how The Mini
Farm helps Samford, SEQ, and Australia with food security.
I also dropped by Izak and Elizabeth’s space at the Lifestyle Centre Samford. It’s a fantastic spot in our community for local small businesses focused on enhancing health and lifestyle.
Mobile Office
Over the last 23 years, I have helped many thousands of residents from all over Dickson through my mobile office. If you see me out and about with my caravan, please drop in—I would love to meet you and see how I can assist you.
Marquee hire
If you’re a school, sporting club, community group, or organisation looking to host or attend an event this year and are in need of a marquee, the following marquees are available to hire free of charge: one 6m x 3m and five 3m x 3m. To book a marquee for your event, please contact my office. Contact details are provided below.
What’s important to you?
There are many important issues our country faces, including the rising cost of living, so please send me an email at peter. dutton.mp@aph.gov.au or call 3205 9977 if there is anything I can do to help, or any local issues you’d like to raise. You can also pop into the office at Strathpine in person during business hours.
