Important Features of MRI About Dr. Chao Dr. Philip Chao graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Yale University and was Scholar of the House. He continued his studies at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, receiving his medical degree in 1983. After a transitional internship year at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY, Dr. Chao did his residency in Radiology at Brooklyn’s SUNY Health Science Center (1984-1987), where he became Chief Resident. He stayed on to complete a fellowship in Neuroradiology (1987-1988). Dr. Chao has been interested in MRI technology since its very beginning – the first MRI scan took place in 1981 while he was pursuing his medical studies. The University of Pennsylvania, where Dr. Chao was both a Body MRI Fellow (19881990) and a Neuroradiology Fellow (1989-1990), was at the heart of the development of this technology and Dr. Chao was able to work with pioneers in MRI on the first GE Signa 1.5T (tesla) scanner. His advanced research and specializations complete, Dr. Chao left the University of Pennsylvania for a position as Director of MRI in Wilmington, DE – a position he held for 14 years. Dr. Chao eventually left that position to create the best MRI Center in Delaware which uses the very latest technology: 3T MRI. While 3T (tesla) scanners have been used for scanning research patients since 2002, these advanced, more powerful MRI scanners only became available for clinical use in 2004. Dr. Chao worked hard to bring 3T technology to Delaware and in February 2007, MRI Consultants, LLC began operating the first 3T scanner in the State. 3T is the newest horizon for MRI. By: Dr. Philip Chao As we start the summer, we at MRI Consultants would like to point out a few important features of MRI. As we saw in one patient this week, high quality MRI can detect fractures that x-rays might miss. A woman fell and hit her shoulder resulting in symptoms that were very much like those of a rotator cuff tear. I should perhaps mention that such a tear is relevant in approximately 20% of patients over the age of 65. Sadly, many never find out they have a tear until it is too late to be treated effectively. Most orthopedic surgeons and family doctors miss RCT in elderly patients. If you are over the age of 65 and have persistent shoulder pain, you need to INSIST on an MRI. Another important use of MRI is related to ACL injury (twisted knees) and subtle fractures. A patient recently had a poor quality 1.5T MRI and was told that there was nothing wrong. Her specialist subjected her to months of physical therapy, three steroid injections and the whole time there was no relief and severe pain. A repeat MRI done on a 3T MRI scanner showed 5 different abnormalities missed by the initial 1.5T scan. The higher resolution and clearer images of 3T MRI makes a huge difference in musculoskeletal problems. (It’s the difference between DVD and Blu-Ray: one is “okay” … the other is so much better!). In my 30 years experience a good quality 3T MRI is better than any other examination and can save you other, unnecessary—and expensive—tests. Lastly, it is important to keep in mind that IV sedation can make a huge difference in an MRI study. The quality of

an image is at least partially linked to a patient’s ability to remain completely still. Sedation can help. At MRI Consultants, we offer IV valium sedation for a mere $50. It is monitored by Dr. Philip Chao and we have been doing this since 1990. Ask your MRI facility if they offer this necessary service. For those who are claustrophobic, this is particularly important. These days, it is increasingly important for patients to educate themselves about the tests their doctors order. Is it the best test? Is it the best facility? Your insurance company will sometimes only pay for the test the first time, so it is important to make sure it is done right. Otherwise, it may need to be repeated and you may be responsible for the additional charge. Many doctors now know about diffusion tensor imaging or susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) for microhemorrhages. A recent paper said many more cases of Alzheimer’s dementia could be detected if SWI is used. When performing an MRI related to Alzheimer’s, MRI Consultants includes proton spectroscopy for free with an MRI with and

without contrast. For the record, we use the safest MR contrasts available, and have, since 2007. A recent article (AJR) from the University of Pittsburgh found Multihance (the contrast we use) is very safe. The adverse reactions (0.07%) over nearly eight years were “infinitesimally small.” (www.safecontrast.com) As we’ve recommended time and time again, ASK questions. Inform yourself. In a time of high deductible plans, it is

increasingly important to arm yourself with information and reduce the number of unnecessary tests. We can help with this. We are more than happy to answer questions. Also, if your insurance plan has a VERY high deductible—or if you do not have insurance—please contact us to discuss our discounted rate. We offer a very competitive Same Day Pay Discount. It could save you hundreds of dollars.

A New ERA In Lens Choice For Cataract Surgery

Charles Curry, MD Cataract surgery is, by far, the most frequently performed procedure by the general ophthalmologist. This, of course, makes it imperative that the surgeon hones his or her skills and utilizes the most advantageous technology to attain repeatable and exceptional results at this most common and, arguably, most important surgical procedure. Here at Delaware Eye Institute, all of our surgeons are dedicated to doing just that. Our surgeons bring years of dedicated service learning their craft and have demonstrated a commitment to openness to the newest technologies to improve our surgical results. Technology has been especially kind to the field of ophthalmology over the last 40 years. Our surgeons here at Delaware Eye were among the first in Delaware to pioneer modern small-incision, no-

stitch surgery with foldable intraocular lens implants. This took us from a time where cataract surgery was routinely an inpatient surgery requiring sandbags to immobilize the head for several days postoperatively and a healing process that stretched over several months, to a point of outpatient surgery typically lasting 10-20 minutes with rapid results, oftentimes showing significant improvement in visual function within a few days of surgery. We have also been among the leaders in the use of premium intraocular lenses that enable more glasses-independence for those with significance astigmatism and for those who desire less need for glasses for near vision activities. We are excited to, most recently, be the first practice in Delaware to offer ORA Wavefront Aberrometry to our cataract patients to improve their results, i.e. possibly reduce their need for glasses for some activities after surgery. Each of our cataract surgeons now has about two years of experience frequently using this exciting new tool in the surgical suite. This revolutionary system is the first of its kind to gather information in real time during the course of the cataract procedure which helps guide the surgeon in the choice of lens power and type to be used to improve our odds of meeting the patients’ goals for visual function after surgery. Traditionally, surgeons have relied on

measurements made prior to surgery by instruments measuring through the cataract of the patient to determine best lens choice. While this method of measurement has been effective and accurate for a good portion of patients, there is an inherent flaw to measuring through a cataract that can skew these measurements, which must be very precise to attain the best results. The ORA works by making the calculations of lens power while in the operating room after the surgeon has removed the cataract. This permits much more reliable measurement that requires, typically, only a couple of extra minutes of time while in the operating room. It does not require any repositioning of the patient in the midst of surgery because the ORA is attached to the operating microscope that is being used throughout the procedure. It does not require a second trip to the operating suite for lens implantation, because a full consignment of lens types and powers are kept on hand in our surgical suite. For the patient and surgeon the process is seamless, while the improved results are dramatic. Studies looking at the results after use of the ORA versus with traditional lens measurements find that the number of patients with excellent (within 0.5 diopters of the goal) results improved by about 50%. In addition to the improvement in lens power selection, the ORA provides valuable information for dealing with

astigmatism. Astigmatism is a natural irregularity of the shape of the front of the eye that leads to a distortion of images both near and far without glasses correction. Traditional intraocular lenses used at the time of cataract surgery are incapable of correcting astigmatism, confining the patient with significant astigmatism to constant glasses wear, even after cataract surgery, for all distances. The ORA measures astigmatism while in the operating room, permitting two useful strategies for reducing astigmatism postoperatively in these patients: 1) specialized premium lens implants called toric lenses can be chosen and accurately positioned in the eye to maximize reduction of astigmatism, 2) standard lens implants can be used, but supplemented with corneal incisions guided by the ORA to help reduce astigmatism. These strategies can reduce or eliminate astigmatic glasses need after surgery. It is always important to keep in mind that no technology or surgical procedure is perfect. The ORA Wavefront Aberrometer is one more tool that improves our results after cataract surgery. No machine or surgeon can guarantee a patient perfect glassesfree eyesight after surgery. Almost all patients, regardless of technology used, will find they require glasses for near vision activities after cataract surgery. Almost all patients will find their distance vision could be improved, at least slightly, by a mild pair of glasses for the distance after surgery. The ORA and other technologies we use at Delaware Eye Institute permit a larger number of patients to function more comfortably for more activities without the use of spectacles. We are committed to continued advances that facilitate continued improvement in these results. The most ringing endorsement I can give is to echo Dr. Robinson’s statement that “If I, or my family members, were having cataract surgery I would insist on my surgeon use the ORA System intraoperatively”.

Sunglasses Protect Your Vision By: Glenn Courtney, A.B.O.C. of Delaware Eye Optical Did you know that the human eye is less than 2 percent of the bodies surface, but is the only organ that allows visible light in to the human body. Even with evolution and the development in defenses such as recessed eyes, eyebrows, squinting and eye lashes too much UV light still reaches the eye passing through the cornea on the way to the retinas at the back of your eyes. The need to protect the eyes from such maladies as photokeratitis (sun burn of the eyes) , Pterygium ( Growth of the conjunctiva on the surface of the eye), Cataracts ( a leading cause of blindness in the world today), and cancer of the eye, ( which science increasingly believe life long exposure to the sun increases risk). Sunglasses can help decrease the risk of these health issues associated with exposure to ultraviolet A & B , and infrared light. Concerns of exposure to ultraviolet A & B are known, infrared is a more recent concern due to longer life spans and it’s association with macular degeneration. The public’s awareness and knowledge of these issues with sun exposure and its affects is around 75 percent , but only 31 percent actually follow through and wear sunglasses to protect their eyes. Sunglasses are the primary way to protect your eyes from exposure to UV light and in most cases today’s sun-wear both in non prescription and prescription block up to 100 percent of ultraviolet light. Today there are countless companies selling verious qualities of sunglasses that are reflected in the price and in some cases protection. Price does not necessarily determine protection from UV but can reflect quality of materials in both the lens and frame. So if you are someone who losses their sunglasses often lower price might be your choice, but if you enjoy boating, ride a motorcycle , hike, go to the beach , drive or just spend a lot of time outdoors enjoying

other activities high quality sun wear should be your selection. Lens designs vary from CR39 a simple non prescription tinted lens to a Trivex, Polarized, backside Anti Reflective, double gradient mirrored lens. These two lenses are at opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to price, material durability, filtration of light, comfort of vision and protection of your eyes. Companies today are spending a great deal of money to design lens systems for sunglasses that provide unique ways of filtering light that’s carving out a niche to promote their sales position. Sports brands such as Maui Jim, Costa, Oakley, Kaenon, and Addias all have unique properties their lenses provide. Maui Jim our most successful sun glass line use glass, polycarbinate and 1.60 index lens materials with bi gradient mirrors, water proof and oleophobic coatings ( sheds water and repels grease), Anti-reflective treatment (blocks reflective light from behind), Clearshell (scratch-resistant treatment front and back), and most importantly a polarized film (eliminates reflected glare). The “ vivid performance “ using “Polarized Plus 2” Technology comes in 4 colors, Neutral Gray, Maui Rose, HCL Bronze, and Maui HT (Green), and other various options to select from. These sport brands each offer their own unique lens and frame designs but all protect you from UV up to 100 percent. The trend of providing your eyeglasses prescription in SV and progressive lens design continues and all of these mentioned companies have their own propitiatory in house labs matching the nonprescription lens appearance. So your prescription sun lens looks exactly like the non prescription lens when we order through Maui Jim lab for instance and the performance is duplicated in your single vision or progressive prescription lenses. There are limitations on prescription availability though theses labs but in some cases we can provide your high powered prescription though our lab and design a close duplicate to the companies in house lab. Delaware Eye Optical also carries a huge inventory of fashion sunglasses with non prescription lens blocking up to 100 percent UV light. If you would like to put your prescription in one of our designer frames we can suggest the appropriate lens design

either in polarized or non polarized. Available lens variations include solid colors, tints, or the new gradient polarized now available in three colors. Mirrors and back side antireflective coatings can be added. We have a huge selection designer eye wear available and can order specific frame colors for your

BY R. ALBERTO ROSA, M.D., FACC Dr. Ramon Alberto Rosa is a graduate of the University of Santo Domingo in his native Dominican Republic. He completed his post-graduate medical education at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia with a residency in internal medicine (1991-1994), Chief Medical Resident (1994-1995), and cardiology fellowship (1995-1998). Dr. Rosa has practiced cardiology in Sussex County since July 1998. He has served as Medical Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and as Chief of the Department of Cardiology at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, DE. Dr. Rosa is trained in non-invasive cardiology, Nuclear Transesopageal Echocardiograms, as well as invasive diagnostic procedures and pacemaker implantations. Dr. Rosa is board certified by the American Boards of Internal Medicine and Cardiology. He is also a Certified Aviation Medical Examiner and is Board Certified in Nuclear Medicine.

There are a number of popular beliefs out there about your cardiovascular health that might be misleading and dangerous when it comes to keeping your heart healthy. Here are some of the most common ones: 1. “Heart disease runs in my family, so it’s only a matter of time until I get it too” No question there is a strong genetic component to heart disease, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do something about it. On the contrary, a strong and consistent set of measures should be taken early to dramatically reduce your risk: stay active, don’t smoke, strict cholesterol control, treat diabetes and hypertension, reduce salt intake, change and stay on a healthy diet. 2. Chest pain is a sure sign of a heart attack”. Not quite. Chest pain remains the most common symptom of a heart attack, but there are many others just as important that can be subtle: Shortness of breath,

8 I Summer 2016

Ten Common Myths about Cardiovascular Disease

dizziness, nausea, pain or discomfort in the arms, shoulders, jaw, mid upper back, or palpitations. It’s important to recognize any so these symptoms and to call 911 immediately.

3. “ I can get to the hospital just as fast ( or faster) than the ambulance can” Wrong and very dangerous for many reasons: The emergency medical system staff will initiate the right treatment and activate the hospital system ahead of your arrival in the hospital. You will get into the emergency department much faster. Don’t be a fool, call 911 and let them help you instead. People have had cardiac arrest while driving and have become unconscious, causing fatal accidents. 4. “ I am too young to worry about heart disease”. An early adoption of a healthy life style will have a tremendous impact in the prevention of cardiovascular disease later on. The heart attack someone might have in their 40’s or 50’s began as a process of plaque accumulation in the coronary arteries and others in childhood and adolescent years. So, educating your children for life long healthy living is perhaps the most important legacy.

8. “ I stopped my medicines because my blood pressure was normal, or my cholesterol was normal or I feel good now”. Very often people assume that once your blood pressure and cholesterol reach the recommended levels, then the job is done and the medications are no longer needed. The reality is these are chronic problems and need maintenance and continued treatment. Please consult with your doctor before stoping any medication on your own. Feeling better is fine, but it might be because you have been on that treatment in the first place. If you are having trouble affording medications, talk to your doctor to be switched to a less expensive alternative or they may have certain discount programs available to you. 9. “Aspirin is a good blood thinner to prevent strokes if you have atrial fibrillation”. This is a common one. The truth is that if you have this heart rhythm problem you are at a much higher risk for a stroke and you need to be on a true blood thinner, such as warfarin or one of the newer

agents now available on the market. Aspirin alone is not an effective treatment in this situation. 10. “Drinking a glass of wine a day reduces your risk of heart disease.” The question is -- how big is your glass of wine? The recommended amount of daily consumption of wine is 5 ounces for women and men over the age of 65. For men under age 65 they can have 2 glasses of 5 ounce each. The standard wine glasses hold between 12-14 ounces of wine, so it is very easy to consume more than intended. Red wine contains the antioxidant resveratrol, which has been studied in animals to potentially reduce the risk of heart disease, but recent research has discredited some of this claim. The same antioxidant can be obtained from eating grapes and drinking grape juice, so wine consumption is not necessary for this potential benefit. Just some food for thought. Maybe over a glass of red wine, or maybe not.

5. “Diabetes won’t affect my heart so long as I take my medicines”. It’s critically important to keep a very strict control of diabetes and sugar levels to reduce the risk of a heart attack and stroke. However, you still remain at high risk for those events. Weight loss, regular exercise, smoking cessation, controlling blood pressure and cholesterol become even more important if you are also diabetic. 6. “ I will know when my blood pressure is high because I will have a headache” High blood pressure continues to be a “silent killer” and most people will have no symptoms, until it’s late and other organ systems are involved. Early detection and effective treatment of high blood pressure are absolutely critical in preventing stroke, heart attacks, heart failure, and kidney failure. Check your blood pressure regularly and discuss it with your health care provider.

7. “ Cholesterol checks are for older people”. Not exactly. The American Heart Association recommends an initial cholesterol check at age 20. Early detection and intervention are very important. If you have a very strong family history for heart disease, checking before age 20 is a good idea as well. Again a healthy diet and regular exercise are the cornerstone of treatment.

Blood Bank of Delmarva’s Summer of Rock and Roll 2016 Blood Challenge But while we’re playing, relaxing and enjoying the great outdoors there’s a large segment of the population of the Delmarva region who won’t be experiencing those pleasures of the season and need our help. They’ll need blood! Blood recipients come in all shapes, sizes, colors and ages and their needs are unique. Some are the victims of accidents or trauma and need the lifesaving gift of blood to replenish what they’ve lost in an emergency situation and THEY NEED IT IMMEDIATELY! There are those afflicted with cancer, particularly leukemia, who may need multiple transfusions of red blood cells and platelets. Sickle cell patients, especially with severe complications, have been known to use up to 15 units of red blood cells to treat their condition. Newborn babies, especially if they’re prematurely born, have been known to need blood products to stay alive. And one of the largest uses of blood takes place when complications occur during and immediately following childbirth. As you can see by these few examples there are hundreds of local residents on a weekly basis who need blood. In the Delmarva region alone, over 20,000 patients a year are saved by the precious gift of life given by dedicated Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD) blood donors. But to keep that supply at an adequate level requires the dedication of thousands of donors every year who selflessly give of their time and of themselves, literally, to make sure our local blood supply is sufficient for whatever may come our way. Here’s something else you may not know, 65% of the US population cannot donate blood! And, of the 35% who qualify, only around 5% actually do. That means there’s a very small percentage of people who in fact donate and those numbers are starting to dwindle as many of our most dedicated donors start to “age out” of the donor pool. What concerns most every blood organization in the country is that we’re not seeing younger donors coming in to replace our lifelong donors. In other words, the next generation is not showing up to “carry the torch” and donate blood. No matter how advanced modern science becomes, there is still no substitute for human blood. The 20,000 plus local patients a year we serve would be in serious trouble, if not deceased, if it wasn’t for those dedicated individuals who continue to answer the call and return time and again to our centers to donate. That’s why we are making an urgent plea for you to seriously consider becoming a blood donor. Starting in May and continuing through September 24th, 2016, you will have the perfect opportunity to try donating blood while also being incentivized to do so. Blood Bank of Delmarva’s Summer of Rock and Roll 2016 Blood Challenge will give you a chance to Rock at Firefly 2017 or Roll in the Cash from our friends at TD Bank. All you have to do is donate blood during our 2016 Summer Blood Challenge and you’ll automatically be entered for a chance to win 2 Four Day Passes to attend the Firefly Festival at Woodland of Dover in 2017 along with a nice pile of spending money in the form of a $1,000 gift card courtesy of TD Bank. If you’re not into music festivals and would prefer something a bit more akin to your personal tastes, then we’ll hook you up with a chance at a TD Bank gift card worth $2,000. There’s no sense in winning something you won’t use or enjoy and since we figured EVERYBODY can use some extra dollars in their pocket, we’d give YOU the option. BBD’s Summer Blood Challenge, now in its 14th year, is an opportunity for us to reach out to the corporations, employers, civic groups and other community minded organizations who understand the critical importance of an adequate, safe blood supply. Because of the nature of the season, blood collection during the summer is always more difficult and with high schools and colleges being out of session, it’s vitally important that we find donors to replace the blood collected from those students during the school year. As I mentioned before, 65% OF THE US POPULATION DOES NOT DONATE BLOOD AND ONLY ABOUT 5% OF THOSE ELIGIBLE ACTUALLY DO. If only an additional 1% of Americans donated, blood shortages would be a thing of the past for the foreseeable future. Since

10 I Summer 2016

about 43,000 pints of blood are used each day in the US and Canada, you can see the need to provide this lifesaving gift is never ending.

At Blood Bank of Delmarva, we take great pride in the fact that for over 60 years we have never suffered a significant shortage of blood in our region, but with less people willing to roll up their sleeves to save a life, that situation could change rather quickly. I’ve written this before but it bears repeating: Giving blood is the most personal gift you’ll ever give because you are literally giving of yourself. We invite you to Be Someone’s Hero and Give Blood this summer. You’ll find just about all the information you’d ever want to know about blood donation on our website at DelmarvaBlood. org. If you’d rather talk with someone about how you can join us in our mission to save lives, you can reach us at 1 888 8-BLOOD-8. We also have a convenient mobile app that you can use to schedule a donation appointment. And if you happen to be part of that 65% of the population that is unable to donate blood but believe what we do is worth supporting, you can become one of our Friends for Life. Friends for Life also realize the critical importance of having a safe and adequate blood supply on hand at our local hospitals. They know that although they may not be able to give, they or a loved one may need a transfusion someday and so they get involved by supporting BBD financially. More information on our Friends for Life program is also on our website, DelmarvaBlood.org. In the meantime, we wish you all a safe and happy vacation season.

What is Ultherapy? is a face and neck treatment that improves skin laxity in a meaningful way but completelynon–surgically.

Jowls

Michelle Parsons, MD

is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia and received her residency training from the State University of New York in General Surgery, and Christiana Medical Center in Emergency Medicine. She also served as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force. Dr. Parsons specializes in Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy and treatment of Thyroid disorders as well as Aesthetic Medicine and Laser Medicine. Here at ReNove Medical, Dr. Parsons offers Ultherapy, a state of the art medical procedure utilizing focused ultrasound energy to lift and tighten sagging skin. No scalpel or anesthesia is needed. Ultherapy is great for people who would like tightening and lifting of facial skin without have a surigcal facelift. The Ulthera sound energy passes right through the skin and targets the areas you want lifted. During a typical 30-60 minute Ultherapy treatment session, an ultrasound applicator is passed over each region of the face. The sound waves emitted deliver small, controlled amounts of energy into the deep layers of skin and soft tissue. The beauty of Ultherapy ‘uplifting ultrasound’ is that it

Ultherapy works great for sagging jowls, where the skin is fatty, heavy and drooping. Ultherapy is able to reduce this fatty heaviness, tapering the jaw line, for a more youthful look. Ultherapy can restore a more youthful shape to the face from a square to the inverted triangle.

Nasolabial Folds

Ultherapy also works well to minimize the drooping of excess skin that we get along each side of the nose, or lower cheeks. You may think that you need to fill in these areas with a filler, but the real problem may be that fat and loose skin is just falling down due to the effects of gravity. With ultherapy we can target this area and minimize the fattiness and tighten up that skin. Again this will restore the more youthful balance of the face with the center of gravity higher in the cheek areas.

Neck

Ultherapy can tighten up that loose skin underneath our necks as well. The area that Ultherapy works the best is that area just underneath the chin and extending into that curve of the neck. Ultherapy won’t duplicate the results of a surgical neck lift. But if you have somewhat loose and fatty skin in your upper neck, hanging just beneath your chin, Ultherapy can improve this area, and improve your profile.

Perhaps one the most dramatic areas that Ultherapy can improve on without surgery is the eye area and creating a brow lift, helping to lift heavy drooping eyelids. Ultherapy can make the eyes appear more open,

more awake, rested and more youthful. This may be subtle change but this small difference can have a significant effect! Our clients really love this part of the Ultherapy results.

Before

Overall Ultherapy works wonders to taper, redefine your facial contours, while eliminating fatty, droopy areas, and lift and tightening skin around the eyes and underneath the chin, for a more youthful sculpted look. The stars in Hollywood do this treatment, and now you have access to this age defying procedure right here in Delaware at the beach. Dr. Parsons is pleased to bring this cutting edge highly sought after technology to you to help you look your best. If you think you may be candidate for Ultherapy, please give us a call to set up a complimentary consultation with Dr. Michelle Parsons. 302227-1079.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect from Ultherapy?

After just one treatment with no downtime, your skin will gradually shift back into a more youthful position. Improvements include a sleeker, more defined jawline and tighter skin on the neck under the chin. Sagging skin on the cheeks can be tightened and lifted, which in turn can

After

improve folds from the nose to mouth, folds from the mouth to jaw, and drooping corners of the mouth. Tightening of skin on the forehead can reduce the sagging skin on the eyelids and promote a more open, refreshed look in general. The results of Ultherapy are permanent, just as the results of a face-lift are permanent, 0f course, your skin will continue its natural aging process. While Ultherapy is not a replacement for surgery, it is an inviting alternative for those who are not ready for surgery but looking for meaningful results.

TESTIMONIAL One week after my Ultherapy Treatment, my husband, after being out of town for a couple of days asked me “what’s different about you,” he was staring at my face! Not having told him about my treatment I innocently said “what do you mean?” His response was “I am not sure but your face looks different.” I asked “different good or different bad?” He replied “different good, looks stretched.” I was surprised that the results were noticed that quickly. I found the treatment to be bearable, certainly wasn’t pain free, but tolerable. I was very happy when it was over! For the past 2 weeks following the treatment my face has been tender which is a reminder that the treatment is continuing to work! I would highly recommend it to all! K.M. – Ocean City, MD.

Recognizing National Stroke Month What is a Stroke? Strokes occur when the

blood supply to the brain is reduced by a “blockage” of a blood vessel (Ischemic Stroke) or when a blood vessel in the brain “bursts” (Hemorrhagic Stroke). The lack of oxygen and nutrient supply to the brain causes the brain tissue to die. The injured part of the brain ceases to perform its function. According to the American Heart / American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA), Stroke is a leading cause of death in women. In 2010, 60% (77,109 of 129,476) of deaths related to stroke occurred in women. The national mortality rate estimates, stroke kills about 137,000 people each year.

The AHA / ASA estimate each year, approximately 795,000 people in the United States experience a stroke which translates to a stroke occurring every 40 seconds! Stroke is the leading cause of disability for all Americans with nearly half of the people who survive experiencing significant deficits such as weakness or cognitive dysfunctions. Prevention is the key! Each person should be aware of their risk factors and make all possible attempts to decrease their threat for stroke.

Stroke risk factors that are controllable:

cigarette smoking; diabetes; high blood pressure; artery disease; atrial fibrillation (irregular heart beat); high cholesterol; poor diet; obesity; and lack of physical activity. Risk factors that cannot be changed: age; heredity; prior stroke / TIA / heart attack; race; and sex. According to the AHA / ASA, specifically for women, studies have shown the “use of birth control pills, pregnancy, history of preeclampsia/eclampsia or gestational diabetes, oral contraceptive use and smoking, and postmenopausal hormonal therapy may pose a special stroke risk”. High blood pressure (hypertension) is one major contributing factor in women. According to the AHA / ASA “2014 Guidelines for the Prevention of Stroke in Women”, studies have suggested high blood pressure is seen more in men until after the age of 55 at which time women meet or exceed men in the numbers. Some research studies have also found as many as 75% of women after the age of 60 become hypertensive. Currently there is no evidence that there is a difference in the treatment plan of high blood pressure of women versus men. The medications and diet plans are similar. However, there are studies that indicate it is more difficult to control high blood pressure in women, so women should be closely monitored. The hormonal differences and other physiological mechanisms may be influencing factors in difficulties to control the blood pressure.

12 I Summer 2016

Sometimes stroke is not preventable. The important point to remember is to recognize the signs of stroke and to take immediate action. The signs and symptoms of stroke are similar in men and women. The AHA / ASA recommend remembering “FAST”:

F – Facial droop A – Arm weakness S – Speech difficulty T – Time; Time to call “911”

A person loses approximately 2 million brain cells per minute during a stroke. There are treatment options that may be able to save brain cells if the person arrives quickly to the hospital by calling “911”. Specialized treatment options may be available for patients whose symptoms started less than 4.5 hours before arrival to the hospital but the real goal is as “FAST” as possible.

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) What is it? Why does it matter?

Each year, millions of people across the country are diagnosed with Peripheral Artery Disease or PAD. PAD occurs when the peripheral arteries - like those in the legs and arms - become narrowed due to a buildup of plaque. Plaque is made up of deposits of fat, cholesterol or other substances. When plaque deposits build up over time on the inside walls of the arteries is blocks blood flow or “narrows” the artery. PAD is a common condition in the United States in those over 50 years of age or those who are smokers, have high cholesterol or blood pressure, or have diabetes. About half of those with PAD don’t have symptoms or mistake their symptoms for something else. PAD most often occurs in the legs or lower extremities, and the most commom symptoms are: • Cramping, pain or fatigue in the legs when you are walking. This pain usually goes away when you are resting and comes back when you walk again. The pain can be sever and limit your ability to participate in activities. • Burning or aching pain in the feet and toes while resting, especially at night while lying flat. • Cool skin on your feet or a redness or color changes in the skin. • Sores on your feet or toes that do not heel. Left untreated PAD can lead to gangrene or amputation. PAD is dangerous and can be life threatening. These blockages can limit blood flow to the limbs, organs, or brain. When the blockage occurs in the carotid artery, it can lead to a stroke.

You can help reduce your risk of developing PAD by: • Not smoking • Controlling your diabetes • Controlling your blood pressure and cholesterol • Maintaining a healthy weight • Maintaining an active lifestyle • Eating a heart healthy diet

If you have symptoms of PAD, talk to your doctor right away.

While PAD can be a life-threatening condition, it can often be managed or even reversed with proper treatment. If you have PAD, your doctor can help you control symptoms of PAD through recommended diet and exercise plans. If you are 40 year or older and haven’t exercised in a while, your doctor may put you on a supervised exercise plan to start. He or she can also help by providing information about resources to help you quit smoking. For some patients, prescribed medications such as those to help control blood pressure and cholesterol are used to reduce the risk for PAD. Occasionally, a patient may require a minimally invasive treatment such as angioplasty or stent placement to help clear a blockage and maintain blood flow.

For more information about PAD or if you think you may be a risk for PAD, talk to your doctor. Visit www.nanticoke.org or call Nanticoke’s SAVE program at 302-628-6222.

HEART ATTACK –

A WOMAN’S WORRY

For many, when they talk about heart attacks, they think it is a man’s problem. In truth women are just as likely to die from a heart attack as men and two thirds of women having a heart attack did not have any previous symptoms. Women also tend to wait longer before seeking medical help. Like with men a woman may experience chest pain or discomfort when having a heart attack. But women are more likely to experience some other common symptoms as well, such as: • Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in center of chest lasting more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back. • Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, back, neck, jaw or stomach. • Pressure or pain in upper abdomen or back. • Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort. • Extreme fatigue. • Breaking into a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness • Restlessness, insomnia or anxiety • Bluish skin or numbness in lips, hands or feet • Nausea or vomiting

If you think you might be having a heart attack, call 911 right away.

Delaware Palliative Delaware Palliative, a program of Delaware Hospice works as a trusted community partner in end of life education and support in Delaware. Delaware Palliative has joined the collaborative effort of national, state, and community organizations committed to ensuring that all adults with decision-making capacity have the information and opportunity to communicate and document their healthcare decisions. Unfortunately, only about 25% of Americans have documented their future healthcare wishes in writing in the form of an advance directive. It is important to understand that the right time to make your wishes known is while you are still in good health. While making healthcare decisions is often difficult in the best of circumstances, having others make the decision for you is even more difficult. Each of us has the right and ability to make our wishes known. By allowing our healthcare

providers and our loved ones to know what we want, you’ll ensure the right decisions are made. Advance directives give you the ability to document the types of healthcare you do and do not want, and to name an “agent” to speak for you if you cannot speak for yourself. When we put off documenting our wishes through an advance directive, too often the result is family conflict, stress and confusion at a time when you are most vulnerable and cannot speak for yourself. The Delaware Palliative team is an expert at guiding people through the process of Advanced Healthcare Planning. We can provide assistance to you, a loved one or your healthcare provider. Delaware Palliative can be reached by calling: 1-800-838-9800 or www.delawarepalliative.org. Don’t wait for “the right time” to talk about advance directives with your family; here are a few suggestions to open the door for you and start the conversation today.

My dad taught me to fly, to never fear tomorrow. So I will teach my son to soar and not to accept limitations. That’s why I chose Delaware Palliative. If you’re coping with a serious illness Delaware Palliative can help alleviate symptoms and stress. Even if you’re still receiving active, curative treatment. We help keep the focus where it needs to be- life lessons between a father and son. See how palliative care can improve quality of life at www.delawarepalliative.org or call 800-838-9800.

Allan, Delaware Community Foundation, Senior Vice President for Southern Delaware, and Metetwa Shakur, LRHC’s Case Manager for the Homeless Program.

Written by Kevin Loftus Director of Development, Marketing & Communications La Red Health Center, (LRHC) received a 2016 $100,000 Collaboration Grant from the Delaware Community Foundation, (DCF) in support of its Comprehensive Case Management for the Homeless Program. The grant is designed to coordinate the delivery of a range of services to the homeless population in Sussex County through a collaborative effort with Tap Faith,(TF) and the ACE Peer Resource Center, (ACE) known as the Sussex County Coalition,(SCC). Previously, in 2015, the DCF provided $50,000 in seed money to help get the SCC started. Per William Allan, SVP for Southern Delaware, “DCF helps communities identify their most critical needs, and then we facilitate collaborative efforts to address those issues. We are particularly proud of this collaborative grant since it results in organizations working together and leveraging charitable dollars most effectively.” Working together, the SCC objectives include: identifying the homeless, providing individual case management assistance, emergency supplies, housing placement, healthcare, mental health counseling, life-skills training, and job readiness support to build the individual resilience needed to maintain independent living. In addition, the SCC provides support to encourage clients to create and implement

Recently, LRHC was awarded the Mountaire Farms, Better Delmarva Award for its Comprehensive Case Management for the Homeless Program and specifically for the collaborative effort with Tap Faith and the ACE Peer Resource Center. The Mountaire Farms, Better Delmarva Award is designed to highlight individuals, businesses, organizations or classrooms who are going above and beyond to assist others in their community or to improve/ protect the environment.

From left to right are members of the Sussex County Coalition: Metetwa Shakur, LRHC’s Case Manager for the Homeless Program, William R. Allan, Delaware Community Foundation, Senior Vice President for Southern Delaware, Prue Albright, President of LRHC’s Board of Directors, Roger Marino, Mountaire Farms, Brian Olson, CEO of LRHC, Gene Louis, Chair of Tap Faith, and Linda Williams, A.C.E. Peer Resource Center.

Per Brian Olson, LRHC’s CEO, “We were delighted to receive this recognition from Mountaire Farms, and are very appreciative of the funding from DCF and all of the hard work and commitment of our partners in the Sussex County Coalition.”

Going forward, LRHC’s Case Manager for the homeless will continue to conduct community outreach in schools, businesses and churches and outreach into areas where high risk for homeless populations reside and congregate.

ACE will continue to provide peer support, support groups, health and wellness workshops, donated clothing, support in obtaining documentation, and emergency survival supplies.

LRHC’s Case Manager will also conduct intake interviews to assess the needs of the client to determine which clients are in need of primary medical and dental care and substance abuse and/or mental health services.

In addition, ACE will provide access to an educational job readiness and job search computer lab with free Internet access, and assist clients with resume writing and online job applications. Jim Martin, Director and Program Manager of ACE indicated that, “By teaming up with other peers in recovery, the community formed at ACE creates a hospitality net of kindness, compassion and empathy”

Tap Faith will provide guidance and hope for the homeless and those in need by utilizing established emergency transitional housing and outreach services, leading to self-sufficiency and self-worth. Assist and refer people in crisis to various programs including: shelters, food, clothing, counseling, lifeskill education, education and job training services, and housing.

According to Gene Louis, Chair of Tap Faith, “We’ve learned about hopelessness from the tears of homeless mothers and the long stare of homeless men. We exist to help the less fortunate, particularly those rich hearts, clothed by the poor coat of homelessness. We are chained, driven and called to do this work. We are blessed to work with the ACE Center and La Red Health Center and to be supported by the Delaware Community Foundation and also honored to have our work recognized by Mountaire Farms.”

An estimated 6,000 individuals are homeless in Delaware throughout a year, and on any given night, it is estimated that as many as 650 people experience homelessness in Sussex County, with many more individuals and families at risk to experience homelessness. And as Prue Albright, President of LRHC’s Board of Directors explains, “ LRHC through its collaboration with the SCC will continue to work tirelessly to address this situation throughout Sussex County, Delaware” To help LRHC continue its mission to be a Center of Excellence, which provides quality patient centered care to the diverse members of our community, please consider making a donation by visiting our Web-Site at www.laredhealthcenter. org or Facebook page at www.facebook. com/laredhealthcenter and clicking on the Donate button.

Introducing A Breakthrough Treatment for Gum Recession grafts in order to rebuild the gum line. This soft tissue would be sutured in place and would join with existing gum tissue as it healed.

Dr Stewart Perim D.M.D., M.S.

What is gum recession? Gum recession refers to the loss of gum tissue along the gum line. This can occur as a result of periodontal disease (gingivitis, periodontitis, advanced periodontitis), the natural aging process, or abrasive habits when it comes to brushing the teeth. Why should gum recession be taken seriously? When gum recession occurs, the root structure of the tooth becomes exposed. This means that tooth decay and other problems can affect the teeth along the gum line and beneath it. Since healthy gums are essential for a healthy mouth, getting gum recession treated is important for lasting dental wellness. What is the Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST) ? The Pinhole Surgical Technique is a minimally invasive option for treating gum recession. Unlike traditional grafting techniques, PST is scalpel and suture free. Traditional gum recession treatments involve the use of donor tissue or soft tissue

While this traditional grafting treatment is effective, comparable results with better patient experience can be achieved through the Pinhole Surgical Technique. How is Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST) performed? During the Pinhole Surgical Technique, a needle is used to make a small hole in the patient’s existing gum tissue. Through this pinhole, special instruments are used to gently loosen the gum tissue. These tools help expand and slide the gum line to cover the exposed root structure.

There are no grafts, no sutures, and no incisions needed with the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique. It simply involves the adjustment of the existing tissue. Dr. John Chao is the inventor of the Pinhole Surgical Technique and has designed a special set of instruments to perform “periodontal minimal invasive techniques”. He

is world renowned and trains dentists to utilize his instruments for Pinhole procedures. Dr. Stewart Perim, a graduate of his program, is working with Dr. Chao to utilize the Pinhole technique for bone grafting and accelerated osteogenesis. This will improve periodontal and orthodontic outcomes (growing bone and gum).

The benefits of the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique are many: • Less discomfort for the patient after treatment • Faster recovery for the patient than traditional grafting • No need for uncomfortable sutures • No need for scalpels or invasive surgical tools • No need to take donor tissue from the patient’s palate

to Spread Awareness of Elder Abuse By Carolyn O’Neal CHEER COMMUNITY RELATIONS DIRECTOR Elder abuse refers to intentional or neglectful acts by a caregiver or “trusted” individual that lead to, or may lead to, harm of a vulnerable elder. Elder abuse can occur anywhere – in the home, in nursing homes or other institutions. It affects seniors across all socioeconomic groups, cultures, and races. Every year, an estimated five million, or 1 in 10, older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Experts believe that for every case of elder abuse or neglect reported, as many as 23.5 cases go unreported. (Yes – I said 23.5 go unreported.)

The first World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was launched on June 15, 2006 in an effort to unite communities around the world in raising awareness about elder abuse. CHEER is joining the effort on Wednesday, June 15 by distributing purple ribbons at its CHEER Activity Centers and asking everyone to wear purple in recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. CHEER encourages everyone to learn the warning signs of mistreatment. Red flags of elder abuse are: Neglect: • Lack of basic hygiene, adequate food, or clean and appropriate clothing • Lack of medical aids (glasses, walker, medication, etc.) • Person with dementia left unsupervised • Person confined to bed is left without care • Home cluttered, filthy, in disrepair, or having fire and safety hazards

• Home without adequate facilities (stove, refrigerator, heat, electricity, plumbing, etc.) • Untreated pressure “bed” sores/ulcers Financial Abuse/Exploitation: • Lack of amenities victim could afford • Vulnerable elder/adult “voluntarily” giving uncharacteristically excessive financial reimbursement/gifts for needed care and companionship • Caregiver has control of elder’s money but is failing to provide for elder’s needs • Vulnerable elder/adult has signed property transfers (Power of Attorney, new will, etc.) but is unable to comprehend the transaction or what it means Psychological/Emotional Abuse: • Unexplained or uncharacteristic changes in behavior, such as withdrawal from normal activities, unexplained changes in alertness, other unexplained behavior • Caregiver isolates elder (doesn’t let anyone into the home or speak to the elder) • Caregiver is verbally aggressive or demeaning, controlling, overly concerned about spending money, or uncaring Physical/Sexual Abuse: • Inadequately explained fractures, bruises, welts, cuts, sores or burns • Unexplained sexually transmitted diseases CHEER also encourages you to protect yourself from abuse, neglect and exploitation. Anyone can be victimized. However, there are things you can do to help protect yourself from abuse and neglect. Plan! Talk with family members, friends and professionals that you trust and plan for your future. Consider doing the following: • Have your income directly deposited into your bank account. Go to www. godirect.org for help. • Only allow someone you trust to manage your finances. Visit www. aadmm.com for information on professional money management services.

• Talk with an attorney about creating a living will, a revocable trust, and a durable power of attorney for healthcare and/or asset management. Visit www.agingwithdignity.org for more information. • Consult with someone you trust before making a large purchase or investment. Do not be pressured or intimidated into immediate decisions. • Don’t sign any documents that you don’t completely understand. • Do not provide personal information over the phone unless you placed the call and know with whom you are speaking. • If you hire someone for personal assistance, in home care services, etc., ensure that they have been properly screened with criminal background checks completed. (CHEER’s Personal Assistance Services Direct Care Workers have all undergone an extensive background check before being employed.) • Stay Connected. Keep in touch regularly with others. Build a network of family, friends and neighbors that you can interact with. Keep active and busy. Get involved with your CHEER Activity Center or other groups. Create a buddy system with other elders. Call each other daily for reassurance and friendship. Isolation can make you vulnerable to abuse. If you suspect an elder abuse situation, report it immediately. Do not tell the caregiver or family – they may be the ones doing the abuse. Contact the Delaware Health and Social Services (DHSS) Adult Protective Services at 1-800-223-9074. The agency will ask what you observed, who was involved, and who they can contact to learn more. You do not need to prove that abuse is occurring; it is up to the professionals to investigate the suspicions. Making a report in instances of abuse or neglect is the right thing to do. Don’t be afraid. Elders have a right to be safe! The Weight is Over: To Sleeve or Not to Sleeve? Thomas P. Barnett, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Barnett graduated from Princeton University in 1983 and obtained his medical degree from George Washington University in 1987. He completed his surgical training at Thomas Jefferson University affiliate Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia in 1992. He served in the U.S. Air Force at Dover Air Force Base (DAFB) from 1992-1996 where he started the Laparoscopic/ Minimally Invasive & Ambulatory Surgery programs. Dr. Barnett was Chief of Surgery at DAFB Hospital in 1995 and 1996. He has continued to practice surgery in Dover, Delaware ever since being honorably discharged and he founded his private practice, Surgical Associates, P.A., in 1999. Dr. Barnett is Board Certified in Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Society for Metabolic Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Medical Society of Delaware. Dr. Barnett has special interests in weight loss surgery. He currently serves as the medical director of bariatric surgery at BayhealthMilford Memorial Hospital and the Delaware Surgery Center in Dover.

Weight loss surgery has evolved over the last 30 years. Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (”Sleeve surgery”) or taking out a portion of the stomach (see diagram 1) has emerged as the most common weight loss procedure in America over the last couple of years. It is estimated that in 2017, 70-80% of the weight loss surgeries done in the US will be the sleeve gastrectomy. This surgery is done through a series of incisions, most of which are the diameter of a dime. The Sleeve surgery basically converts the stomach from football size to banana size. The decreased size of the stomach

causes a restriction feeling to the patient when they eat and therefore they will eat less. In addition, the surgery removes a part of the stomach that produces a hormone called ghrelin, which is secreted by the oxyntic cells of the fundus in response to fasting. Ghrelin stimulates appetite. The Sleeve decreases the amount of ghrelin produced and therefore patients are able to better control their hunger. Patients who have weight loss surgery have significant positive metabolic effects as well. Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea improve and therefore decrease obesity related morbidity and mortality. Many patients will be able to decrease or completely get off medications for high blood pressure and diabetes. Back and knee pain also improve with weight loss. In a recent study from the Netherlands on 1000 patients undergoing sleeve surgery, they found on average, an excess weight loss of 86.6% in the first postoperative

year, 84.2% after two years, and 84.5% after 3 years. Pre-existent comorbidities appear to improve or even resolve after sleeve surgery. Resolution of type 2 diabetes occurs in 60-96% of the patients. Dr. Sandra Costa is not only a family physician, but a sleeve surgery patient of Dr. Barnett’s herself. She has lost 108 pounds since starting her “sleeve journey.” She had her surgery in November 2015 at Milford Memorial Hospital. “I consider that day my rebirthday. I was born obese at almost 12 pounds and put on weight every year until my sleeve journey began. I feel much better and more energetic.” Francis Fooks, another patient of Dr. Barnett’s, has gone from 318 to 183 pounds 10 months after her Sleeve surgery. “I was able to get off all my medications and get rid of my sleep apnea machine. This surgery has given me my life back! Dr. Barnett, Nicole Fisher ,PA-C, the team at Surgical

Associates, and Milford Hospital have been extremely supportive throughout my weight loss journey.” There are risks with all weight loss surgical procedures. These include, but are not limited to bleeding, infection, obstruction, leaks, and the need for reoperation. Death has occurred in rare cases. Fortunately, with the sleeve gastrectomy, safety profiles have been proven to be high with few serious complications. Sleeve surgery causes less nutritional deficiencies post-operatively compared to the gastric bypass. Complications after Sleeve surgery in the literature vary from 2.9 to 9.5% which appear to be lower than the complication rate after gastric bypass, varying between 4.6 and 20.5% in the literature. Free Information Seminars are offered the 4th Tuesday evening of each month from 6:00-7:00 PM at the Eden Hill Medical Center in Dover. No registration is required. Questions? Please call Dr. Barnett’s office at (302) 674-0600.

Connect And Protect: Helping Seniors Here, Children Around The Globe

Come in and get your Vaccine at

Walgreens recently launched “Connect and Protect” program (through June 30), which is educating our senior patients over age 65 on the need to get two other vaccinations: shingles and pneumonia. Shingles is an extremely painful skin rash that can last upward of a month and cause other complications such as nerve pain or, in more severe cases, pneumonia, blindness, hearing problems, brain inflammation and even death. Through informational brochures and pharmacist consultations with patients, Connect and Protect also brings seniors up to speed on the pneumonia immunization, which now consists of two doses based on a new CDC recommendation announced this year. Most seniors aren’t aware of the change and their age group is particularly atrisk for pneumonia, an upper-respiratory tract infection and a leading cause of vaccine-preventable illness and death in the U.S. Because so many of our patients are over 65, Walgreens is at a key spot to help fill in that information gap. Closing the immunization gap is also the theme of World Immunization Week (held every April), a global initiative by the World Health Organization to raise awareness of the importance of being fully immunized throughout life. Walgreens is no stranger to closing immunization gaps as we continue to partner with the U.N. Foundation through our Get a Shot. Give a Shot campaign. For every vaccine administered at a Walgreens – including flu shots and the shingles and pneumonia vaccines we’re encouraging through Connect and Protect – the value of a potentially lifesaving polio or measles vaccine is donated for a child in an underdeveloped part of the world.

Talk to Your Pharmacist BY ELIZABETH DATTOLI, PHARM.D WALGREENS PHARMACIST

Look at any stock photo of a pharmacist and she’ll probably be counting pills or filling a pill bottle. As a pharmacist, dispensing medications accurately and safely is as important as anything we do. But most people do not know how much more a pharmacist can do for you.

Good pharmacists will make themselves available to answer your questions and dispense advice as well as medicine. Here are a few ways a simple conversation with your pharmacist can make your life easier, your health better and your mind more at ease. And remember, a growing number of Walgreens pharmacies now have private consultation rooms so you can have that talk in private.

Interactions and Side-effects.

One pill can have multiple effects, depending on the patient. If you’re feeling an unexpected side-effect, such as a rash, nausea or depression, ask your pharmacist. There may be alternate medications, different

dosage levels, dietary changes or other solutions. Additionally, other medications you may be taking may interact in ways not anticipated. Your pharmacist can review with you your entire regimen of prescription and non-prescription drugs and identify possible problems. In consultation with your physician, we can find alternatives.

Control Costs. The drug you are

taking may have a less-expensive generic equivalent. Your pharmacist can find out. They can also talk to you about your insurance coverage, Medicare Part D and programs such as the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club.

and affordable way to get a flu shot or other immunizations. They can also get your blood pressure checked and do other screenings. Many pharmacists specialize in certain chronic diseases, such as diabetes, and can provide an advanced level of consultation.

And more. In addition to services

Seventy-five percent of Americans live within five miles of a Walgreens drugstore. That puts most people close to a much wider range of health care services than they may know. And your pharmacist will be happy to tell you all about them.

like these, you may be surprised by the widening range of services your community pharmacist now provides, some of them thanks to changes in laws governing the role of the pharmacist in health care. For example, pharmacists are an easy

Adherence. Non-adherence to medications is one of the most significant and costly barriers in treating illness in the U.S. today, estimated at approximately $300 billion per year. Non-adherence is a key contributor to repeat physician visits, hospitalizations and adverse patient outcomes. Your pharmacists can play a critical role in helping you or a loved one improve adherence through a number of programs and services available in store, online and through our mobile platforms. Some Walgreens services include in-pharmacy, phone and online chatbased pharmacist counseling for both Elizabeth Dattoli, Pharm.D. (Veith) was born and raised in Sussex County, Delaware. Prevent Falls and Stay Independent at Home with Home Care

Dawn Sbriglia, LPN,

Director of Caring Hearts Home Care, LLC

Ashley Parker, Assistant Director of Caring Hearts Home Care, LLC

Important Facts about Falls The Center for Disease Control and Prevention -CDC- reports that • Each year millions of older people—those 65 and older—fall. In fact one out of three older people fall each year, but less than half tell their doctor. Falling once doubles your chances of falling again. • One out of five falls causes a serious injury, such as broken bones or a head injury. • Each year 2.5 million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries. • Over 700,000 patients a year are hospitalized because of a fall injury, most often because of a head injury or hip fracture. • More than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falling, usually by falling sideways. • Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries (TBI).* Although many falls do not cause injuries, it is reported by the CDC that one out of five falls does cause a serious injury. These injuries include head injuries and/ or broken bones. These types of injuries can cause persons to be unable to do their normal activities of daily living, such as cooking, cleaning, shopping, and personal care. Often the person loses their ability to live independently. There are many risk factors that contribute to falling; which includes both prescription and over the counter medications, vision problems, difficulties with balance and walking, memory deficits, and many home hazards.

To help prevent falls: • Have you eyes checked regularly • Talk to your doctor about medications you are taking both prescribed and over the counter, to see which one may be high fall risk medications, such as sedatives, pain relievers or antidepressants • Always get up slowly after sitting or lying down. Take your time and make sure you have your balance. • Wear proper fitting shoes with low heels. • If needed, use a correctly measured walking aid. • Remove or tack down all scatter rugs. • Remove electrical or telephone cords from traffic areas. • Avoid using slippery wax on floors. • Wipe up spills promptly. • Avoid standing on ladders or chairs. • Have sturdy hand rails for all stairs inside and outside the home, or, if necessary, purchase a stair lift. • Make sure that all staircases have good lighting with switches at top and bottom. • Staircase steps should have a non-slip surface. • Be sure you have enough light to see where you are walking. Keep a night light on or keep a flashlight by your bed. • Add grab bars inside and outside your tub or shower and next to the toilet. • Skid-proof the tub and make sure the bath mat has a non-slip bottom. • If possible, bathe only when help is available. Although, many risk factors can be changed or modified to help prevent falls, there are no guarantees. Older adults may have lower and/or upper body weakness that prevents them from standing or walking without someone assisting them, or those with memory deficits may not remember to use hand railings or their ambulation devices such as a walker or cane. This is where home care agencies can help. They provide personal care services to include: Personal Care: assistance with bathing, grooming, shaving, dressing, toileting and incontinence care. Alzheimer’s and Dementia care: safety monitoring for wandering, falls and home hazards. Assisting with transfers and walking. Homemaker services such as cleaning, cooking, and many more services. Their goal is to assist clients to remain safe, fall free and independent in their home. *Reference http://www.cdc.gov/HomeandRecreationalSafety/Falls/adultfalls.html

Testimonial Dawn Sbriglia’s team of ladies saw my father through several weeks where he could do nothing for himself. Each and every one of these ladies went above and beyond what anyone would expect. The level of “caring” for my father was stellar. He was taken outside when he was able to go. His favorite CDs were played for him. Attention to small needs as well as larger needs were cheerfully met. My father’s team from “Caring Hearts” were also good listeners and always seemed interested in what he had to say--which was a help to him as well. Anyone who engages this team of ladies can rest assured that their loved one is in extremely capable hands. ~ Nadine T., Formerly of Dover, DE

Often we are in need of some words of encouragement or just a little bit of knowledge to help us live a stress free, happy and balanced life. I like to use quotes from the Dali Lama to keep balance and harmony in my life. I am happy to share this with you.

By: Terri Pippin, The Medicine Woman

3. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to achieve it. A lot of times we succeed because we choose to give up one thing to make room for another. The harder the sacrifice the more meaning the success, if what you are trying to accomplished comes from the heart, your sacrifices will be easier. 4. You have to start giving first and expect absolutely nothing in return. In order to grow on the prosperous plane of life we have to give before we get. Our Souls growth comes when we give unselfishly to others. 5. Kindness is the key to peace and harmony in family life. We need to start treat family like guest and guest like family. Kindness is essential to live in harmony with all those around us especially with those that we are related to. 6. Love and Compassion are the pillars of world peace. All you have to do is pick up a newspaper to see that there seems to be a lack of love and compassion in the world today. There is nothing wrong with quietly sending positive energy and well wishes to our world leaders. Give it a try, what do you have to lose? 7. The purpose of our lives is to be happy. As you go thru your life, what you accomplish should bring you happiness. If you have all the riches in the world but are not happy, then it is time to define what you consider as true happiness. 8. Once a year go someplace you have never been. The more we learn about the lifestyle of those in the world the easier it is to understand their belief and ways. You can do this in your own back yard. We are lucky to live in a country that is so different, you can travel 300 miles and be in an area that the way of life is totally different from yours. So get out and explore. When you are in need of spiritual guidance incorporate these eight quotes from the Dali Lama in your life. Sometimes we need a starting point to have the life we want and desire.

Also when things are really good and prosperity is smiling on you enjoy and make the most of that period. 2. Remember sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck. Healing Touch

H

ealing Touch is an energy therapy in which the practitioners consciously use their hands in a heart-centered and intentional way to enhance, support and facilitate the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health and selfhealing. It is a biofield (magnetic field around the body) therapy that is an energy-based approach to health and healing. Healing Touch uses the gift of touch to influence the human energy system, specifically the energy field that surrounds the body, and the energy centers that control the flow from the energy field to the physical body. These non-invasive techniques, using gentle, light or above the body touch, employ the hands to clear, energize, and balance the human and environmental energy fields, thus affecting physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. It is based on a heart-centered, caring relationship in which the practitioner and client come together energetically to facilitate the client’s health and healing. The goal of Healing Touch is to restore balance and harmonies in the energy system, placing the client in a position to self-heal. The chart below demonstrates the full perspective of the body’s reactions to energy medicine. It explains the physiological response during an energy medicine treatment. Follow the chart in a clockwise direction starting with “Relaxes Body” and ending with “Regulates Immune System”. •

Energy medicine treatment initiates relaxation to the body. • The relaxation response releases endorphins in the brain. • The endorphins relax the muscles. • Relaxed muscles create more space between cells providing increased circulation. • The increased blood flow elevates oxygen levels throughout the body. • Accelerated blood flow allows nutrients to be absorbed more efficiently. • Enzymes build for proper digestion. • Hormones regulate to strengthen the body’s constitution. • Toxins release from the body.

The County Woman’s Journal

• Healthy cells begin to regenerate. • A sense of well-being is established which promotes healing. • When the body has a stable physiology, the immune system is regulated. The resulting stability within the immune system affects the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual facets of the body’s energy field supporting self-healing. Healing Touch Research has been conducted in a wide variety of settings and with a number of different problems and situations including: • Cancer • Cardio-vascular disease • Death and dying • Endocrine/Immune function • Pain • Patient satisfaction and experience • Psychotherapy/Psychology • Post-operative recovery • Stress Healing Touch research has been supported and/or funded by hospitals, universities, colleges, professional organizations, private foundations, and the National Institutes of Health, Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

Chiropractic and Sciatica Dr. Tracy Hudson Dr. Hudson is a ’95 Cape Henlopen High School graduate and continued her educational career at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. While attending UNCW, Dr. Hudson suffered an injury playing softball and she sought treatment with a local chiropractor. After a few adjustments, Dr. Hudson was back on the field. Now being a true believer, she decided to further her education in the natural healing art. She attended Life University in Atlanta, GA for 3 years, and then transferred to Texas Chiropractic College in Houston. After graduating in 2004, she moved to Clearwater, FL, where she was in private practice for 8 years. During that time, she also became a Fellow of the International Academy of Medical Acupuncture. She has now moved back to her home town to share her love of chiropractic with our community.

What is sciatica?

One of the most common things people complain of, when the come to see us, is sciatica. When we ask where it hurts, some point to their leg, some to their back and a few to their shoulder. Clearly, not everyone is exactly sure what it is, so what is sciatica? Sciatica is not, technically speaking, a medical diagnosis; it is a symptom of an underlying medical condition. It is a lay term for pain that extends down the leg; pain that can really, really, really hurt!

Common symptoms of sciatica:

• Most often it starts in the lower back and travels into the thigh; it can travel further down the leg to the foot and toes • Sciatica is not only felt as pain, it can be felt as a burning or tingling sensation • In advanced cases there can be numbness or weakness of the leg muscles • Sciatica mostly affects one leg, rarely does it affect both

What causes sciatica?

A bit of anatomy to begin with…. Sciatica gets its name from the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve runs from your low back down each of your legs to your toes. It is formed from the nerve roots (nerves that come out of the spine) L4-S3 at the bottom of the spine. All these nerve roots join together to form the largest nerve in the human body; about the size of your index and middle finger together. The sciatic nerves feed each of your legs with messages from the brain and back again. This allows you to move your legs and walk, feel sensation when something touches your leg, quickly move your leg away when you stand on your kids Lego in the dark, and so much more! In conclusion, it’s a very big and important nerve.

The most common causes of sciatica:

• A trapped nerve in the lumbar spine affecting the sciatic nerve • A disc herniation – one of the discs in the spine bulges out to the side (‘slipped disc’) and presses on the lower lumber nerve roots (that form the sciatic nerve) • Piriformis syndrome – the piriformis is a muscle in your buttocks that the

Dr. Sheila Burek Henlopen Chiropractic Center is pleased to welcome Dr. Sheila Burek to our practice. Dr. Burek is a Buffalo, NY native, who received her Bachelors of Science degree in Biology at D’youville College. She then worked as a medical research assistant in Cardiology at the University Of Buffalo School Of Medicine. It was at that time that Dr. Burek suffered an injury at the gym, for which she sought chiropractic care. It was through this experience that Dr. Burek became interested in furthering her healthcare career in alternative medicine. She attended Palmer College of Chiropractic, graduating in 1995. After 18 years of private practice in Pennsylvania, working in a multi-disciplinary setting, including orthopedic surgeons and physiatrists, she relocated to our beautiful beach town.

sciatic nerve runs under, and sometimes through, and if it gets tight it can irritate the sciatic nerve • Trigger point referral – knots in the muscles of the buttocks or low back, called trigger points, can cause the sensation of pain down the leg (referral) that can mimic sciatica

How do you treat sciatica?

With the causes listed above, in our humble opinions, a combination of Chiropractic adjustments, massage, stretching and cryotherapy (using an ice pack). With this approach you are addressing any misalignments of the spine and pelvis through the Chiropractic adjustments which takes the pressure off the nerves and aides the recovery of any disc herniation (“slipped disc”). Massage relaxes the tight muscles around the spine and the piriformis if needed, which compliments what the Chiropractic adjustments are doing and relaxes any trigger points in the muscles of the lower back and buttocks. Stretching at home helps between seeing your Chiropractor and massage therapist, and the ice pack reduces the inflammation around the nerve, again aiding a speedier recovery. An important final note: The symptom sciatica can be caused by serious underlying conditions and should be checked thoroughly by

a trained physician who performs a complete physical examination of your muscles and joints and neurological examination of your nerves. If you have any change in your bowel or bladder habits (unusually can’t control or go!) or numbness in your “saddle” area, coupled with severe back or leg pain, then you potentially have something called cauda equina. This is a medical emergency and you should contact the emergency services immediately. As a Chiropractor, it is our job to ensure that the complaint you have is a Chiropractic case. At Henlopen Chiropractic & Acupuncture, we ensure that we give you the best treatment and advice to help you with your sciatica, and in those few cases that we feel that physical interventions like Chiropractic and massage are not the most suitable option, we refer you to the person who is right for you.

TESTIMONIAL I’ve been experiencing many arthritis issues and just general malaise secondary to my hypothyroidism, seen endochronoligists took many different supplements, and then was advised to see dr Tracy Hudson , she listens, ask questions offers advice and gives great body manipulation , she’s the best chiropractor I’ve found! CoolSculpting Non-Surgical Fat Removal fat. This non-invasive procedure represents an alternative to surgical liposuction by using a novel cooling technology that permanently removes fat cells from treated areas.

The biggest trend in cosmetic surgery for 2013 is the expansion of non-invasive body countouring technology, the best of which is CoolSculpting, which is now available at ReNove Medical in Rehoboth Beach. CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved, non-surgical device that uses precisely controlled cooling to destroy fat cells, thereby eliminating unwanted love handles, bra rolls, and stomach fat. Arms and legs can be treated as well. Unlike some other non-surgical technologies that release fat from fat cells, such as Vasershape and I-Lipo, Coolsculpting destroys the fat cells thereby eliminating treated fat permanently, as our body does not make new fat cells. Coolsculpting is a unique non-surgical treatment for removal of fat from localized pockets of excess

How does CoolSculpting Work? The technology behind CoolSculpting was developed by Harvard scientists who noted that fat was destroyed by cold under certain conditions. CoolSculpting is a result of their efforts to harness and refine this application of cold to selectively remove unwanted fat deposits in a safe manner. During a treatment, your unwanted fatty area will be pressed and chilled to a temperature 12 degrees above freezing. At this temperature the fat within fat cells crystallizes. When the fat within the cells crystallizes, it damages and kills the fat cell. Skin and other tissue is not damaged as the water in other cells is not crystallized, only fat. The body will then eliminate the killed fat cells over time. The best news is that we do not make new fat cells. Fat cells merely get bigger or smaller as they store more fat or lose fat. So in essence the fat removal from CoolSculpting is permanent. And we have seen instances of patients who if they gain weight, the weight will not return to the treated areas. What are the most common areas to be treated? Many people on a weight loss program continue to have stubborn hard to lose areas, no matter how much dieting, sit ups or weight they lose. Such stubborn areas are typically around the abdomen, the love handles and inner thighs. Once you are over forty, losing fat in these areas is extremely difficult. These are the areas that CoolSculpt can address. Basically if there is an area you can pinch several inches, that area can be treated and eliminated

by CoolSculpt. Most of our patients are interested in losing fatty areas in the upper and lower abdomen, the muffin top, waist, brat fat, back fat, love handles, and “mommy pooches.” We can also treat arms, thighs and saddle bags.

Are there any side effects from CoolSculpting? The side effects from a CoolSculpting treatment are minimal. It is possible Before to have bruising after the treatment, which resolves in a week. It is common to have numbness or decreased sensitivity in the treated area lasting 1 to 2 weeks. In some instances patients will develop a burning tingling sensation 5 days after the treatment which can be controlled with a Lidoderm patch. There are virtually no long term negative side effects. What does CoolSculpting feel like? Our treatment room is very comfortable where you will relax on a padded recliner. When the CoolSculpting is applied to the fatty area to be treated there is a sensation of pulling that feels slightly uncomfortable for the first 5 to 10 minutes. Gradually this sensation lessens to the point during the treatment any uncomfortable sensation is minimal. There seems to be a natural endorphin release during the treatment so patients are very relaxed during the treatment, which takes an hour. Some people have fallen asleep during the treatment! A typical treatment session lasts between 1 and 3 hours, depending on how many areas are treated. During the treatment, we have Netflix available so you can watch a movie or catch

After up on your favorite television program. Busy moms find this time to themselves a real treat! We also have Wi-Fi.

How quickly do people see results? After a CoolSculpting treatment, the fat cells are actually killed and will be eliminated by the body over time. Many report seeing changes in as little as 3 to 4 weeks. The full benefit will take as long as 60 to 90 days. How long to results last? Once the fat cells are frozen, killed and naturally eliminated by your body, the results are permanent. You can still gain weight in other areas if you over eat and don’t continue to try to remain fit. If you are interested in learning more about CoolSculpting and would like to see if you are a good candidate for this effective treatment to lose unwanted fatty areas, please call us today to set up an appointment to meet with Dr. Michelle Parsons at ReNove Medical, Health Rejuvenating Spa, in Rehoboth Beach, 302227-1079. We will be offering an introductory Special this season, so please inquire.

New Study Finds Travel Consultants Save Vacationers an Average of $452 Per Trip 2016 research proves that travel agents save consumers time and money. A new study by ASTA compiled data showing consumers report trips reserved will the assistance of travel agents saved them an average $452 per trip in addition to an average of four hours in travel planning. Perhaps most importantly, consumers said that agents help them avoid costly and irreversible mistakes. The independent study, “Best of Both Worlds: Quantifying How Travel Agents Save Consumers Time & Money,” was funded by Carnival Corporation and conducted by market research firm TNS Global. Says Stellhorn, owner of locally owned Accent On Travel in Rehoboth Beach, DE, “cruise lines will solicit business and take direct bookings from consumers but admitted believe that a professionally trained travel advisor ‘in the loop’ will help a consumer have a better overall experience.” Notes TNS Global report: “For the third year in a row, travel agent usage has increased. At this point, consumers have tried it all. They’ve booked online, they’ve gone direct, and they’ve used an ‘in person’ travel agent. This study dispels the myth that booking direct with suppliers or spending hours online yourself gets you a better deal, or gives you a happier travel experience. Consumers told TNS Global that if you want a better travel experience, use an agent.”

Why Do I Need Gutter Protection? Gutters become useless when they are clogged with debris. They become unable to channel water properly into your drainage or rainwater collection system. The resulting buildup of water can then become a breeding ground for insects, overow into and damage your landscaping, or seep into your roof, siding, basement and foundation. Why coat your garage floor?

Why apply an epoxy garage floor coating? Because your garage will look so cool! A primary motivation for coating your garage floor is aesthetic. Your choices in color are limitless; you can put your team or car logo in the floor or chose a compliment to the color scheme of your home. Trick out your garage to make it the envy of the neighborhood. There are a lot more reasons to coat your garage floor. A professionally applied epoxy garage floor extends your living area! When unexpected rain comes during your backyard crab feast, move the party into the garage and be proud. Guaranteed your garage floor will be a topic of conversation among your guests in addition to your wonderful food and hospitality! Concrete floors constantly shed dust. A quality epoxy floor completely contains the dusty concrete. No more concrete dust is tracked into your home or settling on your tools, equipment, and cars. Go to the refrigerator in your bare feet! Cleanup is a snap. Mopping with plain water and maybe a little ammonia will keep it looking great for many years. Even winter road grime and salt crust washes away easily. “Hot tire pickup” that many have experienced with home improvement store coatings or paint is not an issue with industrial strength floors applied after professional surface preparation. A modern quality elastomeric floor coating is resistant to automotive chemicals like gas, oil, hydraulic fluid, and anti-freeze. Just wipe them up and they won’t leave a trace. Here are a few things to look for when you are shopping for a floor coating. The floor coating should have a dry film thickness of 40 – 50 mils. This is about 5x thicker than the homeowner applied coatings. As such, the coating is able to cover minor imperfections in the floor and withstand dropped wrenches without damage. Surface preparation is the key to any successful coating. The professional will use a diamond grinder or shot blaster to put a profile or “tooth” on the floor to help the epoxy coating adhere. Surface preparation also opens up the pores of the concrete allowing the epoxy coating to soak into the concrete and create an even stronger bond. An epoxy formulation for the base coat and a poly aspartic top coat is the ideal combination. The epoxy is able to absorb into the prepared floor surface creating a strong mechanical bond. The urea-based poly aspartic top coat formulation resists ambering from the sun and provide a fast curing, extremely tough and clear topcoat. The texture of the “full broadcast” flake floor provides some degree of slip resistance especially compared to a solid color smooth floor. If higher slip resistance an aggregate material can be added to the top coat to increase the traction.

Are You a Tilter or a Lifter? That’s a question we have asked many times through the years. What we are really asking is whether you are looking for blinds or shades. That is a major dividing line when choosing window coverings and there are pros and cons to both especially when you are speaking about function. Shades are limited by only having the ability to be raised or lowered whereas blinds can be raised, lowered, or tilted to provide a more variable level of light control and privacy. That being said, shades are better at completely blocking out light because they are one piece of material and are not slatted like blinds and shutters. There are so many little things to consider like blinds can be heavy where shades are light and easy to lift and lower. Questions like “which one would be easier to clean?” have gray answers because the answer is so dependent on how the covering will be used and where it will hang. The number of factors to contemplate is considerable so we will not even talk here about hybrids which are coverings that have benefits of both blinds and shades. People often go that route when they discover that they are neither tilter nor lifter but a combination of both. Calling a professional to help you figure it out is always sage advice when dealing with custom work. We make it easy to find the consultant in your area. All you have to do is go to www. budgetblinds.com, enter the zip code in which you would like your new coverings to be hung and presto!, you will get the phone number of your local consultant. You can call to get the answers to questions you may have and or to set up a complimentary in home consultation where we will bring tons of samples and knowledge right to your doorstep. We really try hard to find the best window covering for the person and the given situation. We enjoy working with both tilters, lifters, and those in between so please let us help you make the best selection and let us worry about the measurements and installation. Once your coverings are installed you can feel confident that we are but a phone call away if any problems ever arise. Our warranties are the best available and we run a full service shop. You are dealing directly with us through the entire process. Call Budget Blinds today to schedule your free in home consultation. A tip for tilters…….If you close your blinds but still see lines of light on the floor, simply tilt the louvers up and due to the downward angle of the sun, the light will be blocked thus saving your floors from that uv damage.

Patio SystemsYour shade and porch solution! In the mid-90s decks started to become a desirable lifestyle upgrade as many homeowners began to have them built. Today, decks, concrete or hardscape patios have become a “standard feature” on the many homes being built. Although a deck, or patio, is a great place to relax in the gentle weather of spring and fall, unfortunately in summer, unless you’re sunbathing, most folks find that the deck is just too darn hot to endure. The result is that an investment of several thousand dollars may only pay off for a few short months each year. Many homeowners have sought to solve the problem with an umbrella, portable tent, or may even decide to build a roof or a complete enclosure over the deck or patio. Umbrellas let the sun chase you around and then blow away before you can fold them down. Stationary roofs are costly, block your view and darken the indoors permanently.

There is a more useful and practical solution – the motorized retractable lateral arm awning, which has been used in Europe for decades due to their much greater cost of air conditioning. An affordable alternative, retractable awnings are there when you need shade and gone when you want sunlight and winter solar gain.

comfortable under the awning, then it will usually be alright, as they are rated for up to 20 mph winds and light rain usage. The last one to leave the house simply taps the remote to the retract position and the awning will safely roll in to the house wall and stop. What could be simpler?

In recent years these gorgeous motorized awnings have become popular here in the US and domestic fabricators now assemble the best awnings from European components. The retractable awning industry is growing tremendously each year and now offerings include retractable fabric window or porch droparm awnings, vertical or horizontal solar shades, and retractable canopy structures. When selecting an awning in this coastal area, you should be aware that unpredictable high winds and storms, as well as the deteriorating effect of salt air are factors to keep in mind. While automatic wind sensor control systems are available, the best protection for your investment is to remember to use it sensibly. If you are

Comfortably enjoy the outdoors – Enclose your screen porch! Your screen porch may be useful you can enjoy your back yard and now, but it will be getting cooler in your view. Today’s enclosure systems can be more sophisticated in terms the fall and it’ time to plan ahead. Homeowners are familiar with the popular sunroom additions on the market today, and those who have purchased one enjoy the extra living space available for family gatherings or evening relaxation as well as high return on investment value. However did you know that your existing screen porch can be enclosed as well? Many of today’s homes have decks or are now often being built with screen porches as a standard feature. Exposed to the elements, decks and patios are often simply too hot or too cold to use much of the year. Screen porches offer shade and some bug protection, but summer heat, dirt, rain, and winter cold with snow and ice again restrict comfortable usage to a short while out of the year.

of thermal efficiency and ultraviolet protection.

The building industry is strongly committed toward pre-fabricated, panelized, or modular enclosure systems. This is due to the many advantages of making the product indoors in a controlled environment, to close tolerances, using modern equipment and techniques. The jobsite work is greatly reduced for a quick installation to eliminate the stress and mess of a stick framed construction project at your home. They are built in days rather than months. While all factory made sunroom additions offer a degree of standardized quality control, there are so many variations of the old 60’s Florida room, that it must be extremely confusing to a homeowner to select the best product for your money. Inexpensive aluminum screen or glass enclosures may install quicker and have less maintenance than a stick built addition, but they conduct heat and cold, the finish can scratch or the kick-panels can easily dent. Better rooms with aluminum structure are now being built by many fabricators

using vinyl clad insulated panels and powder coat finishes (like a car) for added durability. The best have thermally broken wall frames, insulated foam core kick-panels and can be purchased with insulated UV blocking glass.

North America’s fastest growing sunroom and window company, Sunspace Sunrooms has made it easy to select from their state of the art hybrid enclosures with residential aluminum and vinyl products. They offer glass slider systems, 4-track vinyl-pane enclosures, traditional aluminum or glass railings, patio covers and the new translucent BRING THE OUTDOORS INDOORS, WITH AN ENCLOSURE BY PATIO SYSTEMS acrylic roof system.

Studies and testimonials indicate that a sunroom addition, or conversion of an existing porch, is very likely to become the most enjoyed and well used room in the house. They offer protection from bugs, dirt, pollen and bad weather while preserving the breezy outdoor feel of a deck or patio. Sunrooms maximize the seasons so

“Shasta Shutterbug” Has Arrived!

BY: MIKE BAKER I always like to do things with my photography just a little different or something more my way. My “Shasta Shutterbug” camper photo booth was an idea I saw online from California and Florida. My niece, Ashley, had sent a couple of pictures to me, and I started to research. It’s also something popular in Europe. Most of those are from the back of a VW bus or a similar style vehicle. I initially spotted this 1969 Shasta Compact Camper for sale about a year ago alongside a local road. Not knowing what I could do with it, I somewhat shelved the idea of buying it. After I had seen some ideas online, I knew I needed that “Shasta.” I was sure it was already sold. I took a 15-minute drive where I saw it previously. There it was still sitting there waiting for me. I immediately jumped on the idea. I purchased the camper and started looking at different ones all over the US. There are not many “camper photo booths” out there. I never realized how big photo booths are becoming. I shoot many weddings throughout the year and started noticing the appeal. I figured photo booths would be more of a short-term fad and dwindle away. Not true! They are getting more and more popular. So this was my winter project! So ideas started rolling through my mind. I had my daughter, Courtney, listen to my ideas. Not good. Seems like she had better ideas then I did. Most 21 year olds know more about what attracts the younger crowds. She’s the designer, I did the engineering and labor. My 21-year-old daughter knew what was “in” more than I did. She was attending UD while I worked on it and came home to check on it (and my work). I was blessed with a relatively warm fall and winter. One never knows what’s underneath until you start pulling it apart. I replaced some walls and floors from 47 years of weathering. Put new ceiling and wall coverings with a hardwood floor. It is decked out with a stereo system inside and outside, a photo booth and seating. Sorry no room for rest rooms. After Courtney placed it on Facebook, it was booked instantly the next day for 2 bookings. It was an instant hit at the 2016 Heart Ball in Dover. We also made a 2 day appearance at the Dover International Speedway on the recent race weekend. We have gotten many bookings already for weddings, gala events and other outdoor events. We also have the standard photo booth, but I think this one has gotten much attention. After all, this is the first one in the First State!

As the sign says in the camper...

Your Quality of Life is Our Top Priority Susan D’Alonzo Ament is a partner with Morris James LLP and has practiced for 33 years representing personal injury victims. Over the years, Mrs. Ament has found that some women don’t understand the crucial need to have adequate automobile insurance coverage in the event of a serious accident. Susan Ament educates women on these needs every day in her practice and in seminars that she presents throughout the year. By Susan D’Alonzo Ament, Esquire

Being injured in an accident, whether in a motor vehicle accident or at work, can be a frightening experience, especially when someone else is ultimately to blame for your injuries. You may be facing medical bills, lost wages, and other significant expenses, all because of the carelessness of someone else. Fortunately, you and your family may be entitled to seek financial compensation following your injury. At the Personal Injury Group of Morris James LLP, our attorneys and staff understand how difficult it can be to live with an injury. This is why we have dedicated ourselves and our group to protecting our clients and ensuring that they and their families are fairly treated and compensated. The Morris James Personal Injury Group is comprised of seven attorneys: Susan D’Alonzo Ament, Keith Donovan, Kevin Healy, Francis (Pete) Jones, Clayton E. Bunting, Steven L. Butler and Michael G. Owen who have a combined total of over 150 years of legal experience dealing with litigation related to motor vehicle accidents and Industrial Accident Board litigation experience for clients injured on the job. Our lawyers practice in all Delaware Courts. Certain members of our group are admitted in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Our Morris James Personal Injury Group Manager, Al Ament, is a retired Delaware State Police Officer. When an attorney in the Morris James Personal Injury Group represents you, there is more than an attorney/ client relationship formed. There is a personal bond. Our attorneys want to

get to know each client in order to be able to effectively communicate and demonstrate the impact your injuries have had on all aspects of your life. For example, we need to understand how the accident and injuries impacted your life, such as pain and suffering, loss of earning capacity, home nursing care or child care. Mainly we need to know what you can’t do now in your activities of daily living that you regularly did before the accident. The Morris James Personal Injury Group attorneys not only litigate, we counsel. We believe an effective personal injury lawyer must keep each and every client well informed and advised throughout each phase of their case. In addition to legal knowledge, we believe compassionate effective communication skills are vital to the attorney/client relationship. Our attorneys are good listeners and all attorneys and their staff respond to client inquiries promptly and respectfully, whether that inquiry is by telephone, e-mail, text, or an in-office visit.

Our attorneys are also very active outside the practice of law in community service, having been appointed to many church and community service organization boards. The compassion, understanding, and respect they feel toward clients also drive them to serve their community and others in need.

the advantage of over 150 years of legal experience; the knowledge to anticipate insurance company maneuvers, knowledge of police investigation procedures, and most importantly, caring, professional attorneys who have a personal relationship with each client. We are pleased to report that the majority of our new clients are referred to us by satisfied existing or past clients. We think that shows just how hard each attorney and their staff work to gain the highest level of confidence of every client.

At the conclusion of every personal injury case, our group surveys each client for feedback. We are not afraid to learn what our clients think. On the contrary, we value their opinions. We constantly strive to improve our services. We value client input from one who has gone through the litigation process with us. We believe that person is in the best position to keep us informed regarding their reaction to such things as: office location, support staff, lawyering, technology, etc. We are very proud of the client confidence the Morris James Personal Injury Group has worked so hard to achieve.

If you or a loved one suffers the unfortunate event of a motor vehicle accident or work related accident, the Personal Injury Group Attorneys at Morris James LLP will guide you through the process of obtaining the maximum compensation for your injuries to which you are entitled under the law. Lifelong Learning—A Key to Successful Aging BY NORA RIEHL ZELLUK, Professional and Continuing Studies, University of Delaware “Some people have said ‘successful aging’ is an oxymoron,” noted Dilip Jeste, director of the Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging at the University of California, San Diego. Current research says otherwise. Stein Institute researchers, along with many other scientists, believe that the future of successful aging will increasingly depend on cognitive and emotional health. Researchers now widely agree that cognitive decline is not an inevitable part of the aging process. Research on aging offers a striking model of aging as a potential time of brain health and growth. Mental stimulation and creative outlets can provide the opportunity to lead better quality lives filled with more knowledge and wisdom — and an

increased capacity to contribute to society.

expertise and talents as volunteer instructors and through committees.

In one study, participants in creative programs like poetry writing, painting, or choral singing classes reported better physical health than those in the control group, and reported learning “new skills and new ways of looking at and expressing things.”

An amazing variety of courses are offered through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes at UD. Students take courses in art, history, literature, health, computers, yoga, philosophy, memoir writing, music, languages, genealogy, and much more. There are no exams or homework – just learning for the fun of it.

“Getting creative in your later years is a self-fueling engine,” is the message of Dr. Gene Cohen, founder of George Washington University’s Center on Aging, Health & Humanities. “The more you do, the more you can do.” The University of Delaware has been a leader in lifelong learning programs that offer mental stimulation, creative outlets and social connections that positively impact quality of life. The programs feature an academic cooperative model which encourages age 50 plus members to share their

It’s not all about the classroom, though. It is now common knowledge that robust social relationships are one of the keys to staying healthy as we age, and members often mention how highly they value the friendships developed through the program. One student commented, “There is a youthfulness of spirit here that is palpable – a joie de vivre that you cannot believe.”

Osher Lifelong Learning programs are at the following locations: • Fred Thomas Building, 520 Dupont Avenue in Lewes • Ocean View Town Hall and Community Center, 32 West Avenue, Ocean View • Modern Maturity Center, 1121 Forrest Avenue in Dover • Arsht Hall on the UD Wilmington Campus at 2700 Pennsylvania Avenue More information can be found at lifelonglearning.udel.edu, by writing to continuing-ed@udel.edu or calling 302-831-7600. Spring classes begin in January (Lewes and Ocean View) or February (Dover and Wilmington).

Nora Riehl Zelluk is the web/communications coordinator for Professional and Continuing Studies at the University of Delaware.

Not all dogs like other dogs. Not all dogs like any dog. But then again there are the dogs that just want to play, play, play!

If the dogs are lunging, barking, jumping, snapping, stiff body, stiff ears (ears up and back than usual) or a stiff neck, baring teeth, growling, whites of eyes showing, and yes, wagging tail, a stiff wagging tail, then the Meet and Greet will not be positive and good intentions will turn ugly and bad fast! It is best to move on and not bother the other dog or let your dog be confronted with the other dog.

Remember if the dogs playing ‘reciprocate the play’ then all is good and every one is having fun! For example, one dog chases the other dog and then they turn and the other dog chases the one dog that started out chasing. Some dogs play are very vocal. It sounds like a real fight. However, if you watch, you will see that the mouths are open yet neither dog are nipping or bitting the other. This is play too. They just use their voices in play. It is important for a proper Meet and Greet with all dogs/puppies in order to communicate that You as their owners, have control of the situation and that You will not allow anything to happen to them. You’ll protect your dog. This is important to communicate so your dog learns to Trust you and Respect you. Once again, dogs Play should always be reciprocated with both and all dogs. If it is not and you see tension and/or rough play, always call your dog back to You for a ‘Settle’ and give them ‘Me’ time.

“ GIVE US ONE TRY, AND YOU WILL KEEP COMING BACK ” A conversation with Shawn Xiong of Confucius Chinese Restaurant

Confucius Chinese Restaurant was opened in the spring of 2004 in downtown Rehoboth Beach. Shawn Xiong, the owner, had previously owned a Chinese restaurant in Wilmington prior to relocating to the beach area. Since then, Confucius has been named the best Chinese restaurant in the Delaware Today magazine and favorably mentioned in various newspaper and magazines. We had a chance to talk with Shawn XIong and the following is the summary of our conversation. Q: Why do you call your restaurant “Confucius”? X: When I started Confucius, I wanted to offer a menu that most “generic” Chinese restaurants offer. Wherever you go, you probably will

find a Chinese eatery in every shopping center that offers pretty much the same items such as lo meins & chow meins. Our menu is more focused on items you don’t usually find in those places. So I decided that I will not name my place “ wok” or “great wall” or “palace”, yet I want people know it is Chinese. And everybody knows who Confucius is. Q: What made you decide to relocate to Rehoboth? X: When I had my previous restaurant in Wilmington, I was working 360 days a year, 12 hours a day. After I had my son, I decided that I wanted to spend more time with him, more time with his education. Coming to a resort town, it allows me to take some time away from work without feeling guilty about it. Q: What was your biggest challenge coming to Rehoboth? X: There were plenty of challenges

I have faced. The biggest of all was not knowing the market when I first opened. The other challenge was (and continues to be especially during the summer) to convince people that Chinese restaurant IS INDEED more than just Fried Rice and Eggrolls. There are more than 40000 Chinese eateries in this country (more than McDonalds’, Pizza Hut and all other fast food restaurant COMBINED). While this has made Chinese food popular in this country, it has made Chinese food a stereotype (think “$5.99 eat all you can eat,” “free deliveries” for example). I have to explain to people what we do, but once people give us a try, they keep coming back. Q: What are your most popular dishes? X: This is a hard question to answer. There are different popular dishes to different customers depending on their own personal taste. If you like spicy food, we offer dishes

such as Hot Pepper Chicken, Cumin Beef or Kung Pao Shrimp. If you like fish, Salmon with Black Bean Sauce, Steamed Halibut or Crispy Whole Black Sea Bass are all excellent choices. If you are a first time customer, we encourage you to tell our server or what you do or do not like, and we will offer the right recommendation for you. I believe every customer deserves special attention at my restaurant. If they order something they don’t quite like, they are welcome to send it back for exchange AT NO COST. I want customer to have a pleasant dining experience at my place. Q: What are your hours and Specials? X: Confucius is open 7 days a week. Call for hours and reservations.

When we first met she listened to my issues about my home, and was totally helpful and did not judge me or my mess. She gave me a checklist of what she would accomplish at each visit; and advised me on how to best keep my home tidy in just 15 minutes a day, Jackie is working with me and not for me. She truly cares about her work and my family. That sense of pride and ownership in her work, makes all the difference. - Kim Nixon

Women Publishing Entrepreneurs Wanted Pamela J. Rizzo Thirteen years ago I had never even heard of the Women’s Journal, and today I can honestly say the Women’s Journal most definitely changed my life. I had always made good money with my different business ventures, but the Women’s Journal has given me the freedom to control my own financial life, and also have the freedom to enjoy my family. I took a concept and gave it my own touch, and with hard work and consistently following the concept that I was trained in I have built an extremely successful paper.

Robin Coppinger I have been the owner of the Bucks County Women’s Journal for 7 years. It has been a pleasure to be part of the National Women’s Journal family. I have enjoyed publishing the paper, and have had a rewarding and successful career. I also appreciate the continued help and support I have received from both Bob Kapke and other owners over the years. I look forward to working with Bob for many years to come.

Celeste Kline Purchasing the Women’s Journal has been the best decision I have ever made. Not only giving me financial freedom, but allowing me to make my own schedule and my own business decisions. I only wish I had done it sooner.

Linda Hunsicker Publishing three Women’s Journals is very rewarding and fits with my high energy lifestyle. It allows me to be my own boss, be creative and work with the public. Recently, I opened the Finger Lakes Woman and it has been very well received. Now, I can go to my vacation home in upstate NY, make money and be respected and recognized as a local business woman with a great educational publication.

Lynn K. Wolf With the experience of publishing nine different County Woman publications, I can confidently inform you that this is one of the most exciting, rewarding, and successful business ventures for women entrepreneurs in any part of the nation. I originally born and raised in Minnesota and I have lived on the West Coast and the East Coast and many states in between. Some of my past careers include being a National Insurance Account Executive, Retail Operations Manager, Certified New Jersey Teacher and Teacher of the Year, but of these, I have being a County Woman Publisher to be the most gratifying on many levels. I guarantee that you will meet many incredible business owners and community leaders. Your publication will be the critical component in helping to launch a new business and/or successfully grown an existing business. The personal rewards are endless.

Dorri C. Scott Becoming a Publisher has been a dream come true for me. Always a writer, I am an educator and continue teaching as a college Professor. Every two months, I “Give birth and deliver a new child” – my magazines in 2 counties. YES! I love what I do and am growing. The opportunity has been lucrative - though the learning curve has been keen, the support from Bob Kapke has been priceless. Passionate about what I do, over the past 18 months I have met, connected and helped so many people. The powerful resource is one that I highly recommend if you want to work hard, stay focused and make money too. Have the heart and work ethic to do something for both you and others? I highly recommend that you take the step and join a phenomenal group of publisher/owners who are happy going to work every day. Do it and don’t look back!

Lea Southwick I was new to publishing but the training provided was excellent & fun! Most importantly I was given a clear, step by step system to follow that ensured my success. The beauty of the Woman’s Journal is that it is rewarding for everyone; the publisher, the contributing advertisers & the readers. No wonder its been around so long! I am very happy with my decision to become a publisher!

You Don’t Have to Do It Alone! Sometimes life does not go according to plan, but sometimes it can turn out to be the greatest gift in the world. This was the case for Angela and Andy when they gave birth to their daughter, Brinley, and found out she had Down Syndrome.
