Important Features of MRI About Dr. Chao Dr. Philip Chao graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Yale University and was Scholar of the House. He continued his studies at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, receiving his medical degree in 1983. After a transitional internship year at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY, Dr. Chao did his residency in Radiology at Brooklyn’s SUNY Health Science Center (1984-1987), where he became Chief Resident. He stayed on to complete a fellowship in Neuroradiology (1987-1988). Dr. Chao has been interested in MRI technology since its very beginning – the first MRI scan took place in 1981 while he was pursuing his medical studies. The University of Pennsylvania, where Dr. Chao was both a Body MRI Fellow (19881990) and a Neuroradiology Fellow (1989-1990), was at the heart of the development of this technology and Dr. Chao was able to work with pioneers in MRI on the first GE Signa 1.5T (tesla) scanner. His advanced research and specializations complete, Dr. Chao left the University of Pennsylvania for a position as Director of MRI in Wilmington, DE – a position he held for 14 years. Dr. Chao eventually left that position to create the best MRI Center in Delaware which uses the very latest technology: 3T MRI. While 3T (tesla) scanners have been used for scanning research patients since 2002, these advanced, more powerful MRI scanners only became available for clinical use in 2004. Dr. Chao worked hard to bring 3T technology to Delaware and in February 2007, MRI Consultants, LLC began operating the first 3T scanner in the State. 3T is the newest horizon for MRI. By: Dr. Philip Chao As we start the summer, we at MRI Consultants would like to point out a few important features of MRI. As we saw in one patient this week, high quality MRI can detect fractures that x-rays might miss. A woman fell and hit her shoulder resulting in symptoms that were very much like those of a rotator cuff tear. I should perhaps mention that such a tear is relevant in approximately 20% of patients over the age of 65. Sadly, many never find out they have a tear until it is too late to be treated effectively. Most orthopedic surgeons and family doctors miss RCT in elderly patients. If you are over the age of 65 and have persistent shoulder pain, you need to INSIST on an MRI. Another important use of MRI is related to ACL injury (twisted knees) and subtle fractures. A patient recently had a poor quality 1.5T MRI and was told that there was nothing wrong. Her specialist subjected her to months of physical therapy, three steroid injections and the whole time there was no relief and severe pain. A repeat MRI done on a 3T MRI scanner showed 5 different abnormalities missed by the initial 1.5T scan. The higher resolution and clearer images of 3T MRI makes a huge difference in musculoskeletal problems. (It’s the difference between DVD and Blu-Ray: one is “okay” … the other is so much better!). In my 30 years experience a good quality 3T MRI is better than any other examination and can save you other, unnecessary—and expensive—tests. Lastly, it is important to keep in mind that IV sedation can make a huge difference in an MRI study. The quality of

an image is at least partially linked to a patient’s ability to remain completely still. Sedation can help. At MRI Consultants, we offer IV valium sedation for a mere $50. It is monitored by Dr. Philip Chao and we have been doing this since 1990. Ask your MRI facility if they offer this necessary service. For those who are claustrophobic, this is particularly important. These days, it is increasingly important for patients to educate themselves about the tests their doctors order. Is it the best test? Is it the best facility? Your insurance company will sometimes only pay for the test the first time, so it is important to make sure it is done right. Otherwise, it may need to be repeated and you may be responsible for the additional charge. Many doctors now know about diffusion tensor imaging or susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) for microhemorrhages. A recent paper said many more cases of Alzheimer’s dementia could be detected if SWI is used. When performing an MRI related to Alzheimer’s, MRI Consultants includes proton spectroscopy for free with an MRI with and

without contrast. For the record, we use the safest MR contrasts available, and have, since 2007. A New ERA In Lens Choice For Cataract Surgery

Charles Curry, MD Cataract surgery is, by far, the most frequently performed procedure by the general ophthalmologist. This, of course, makes it imperative that the surgeon hones his or her skills and utilizes the most advantageous technology to attain repeatable and exceptional results at this most common and, arguably, most important surgical procedure. Here at Delaware Eye Institute, all of our surgeons are dedicated to doing just that. Our surgeons bring years of dedicated service learning their craft and have demonstrated a commitment to openness to the newest technologies to improve our surgical results. Technology has been especially kind to the field of ophthalmology over the last 40 years. Our surgeons here at Delaware Eye were among the first in Delaware to pioneer modern small-incision, no-

stitch surgery with foldable intraocular lens implants. This took us from a time where cataract surgery was routinely an inpatient surgery requiring sandbags to immobilize the head for several days postoperatively and a healing process that stretched over several months, to a point of outpatient surgery typically lasting 10-20 minutes with rapid results, oftentimes showing significant improvement in visual function within a few days of surgery. We have also been among the leaders in the use of premium intraocular lenses that enable more glasses-independence for those with significance astigmatism and for those who desire less need for glasses for near vision activities. We are excited to, most recently, be the first practice in Delaware to offer ORA Wavefront Aberrometry to our cataract patients to improve their results, i.e. possibly reduce their need for glasses for some activities after surgery. Each of our cataract surgeons now has about two years of experience frequently using this exciting new tool in the surgical suite. This revolutionary system is the first of its kind to gather information in real time during the course of the cataract procedure which helps guide the surgeon in the choice of lens power and type to be used to improve our odds of meeting the patients’ goals for visual function after surgery. Traditionally, surgeons have relied on

measurements made prior to surgery by instruments measuring through the cataract of the patient to determine best lens choice. While this method of measurement has been effective and accurate for a good portion of patients, there is an inherent flaw to measuring through a cataract that can skew these measurements, which must be very precise to attain the best results. The ORA works by making the calculations of lens power while in the operating room after the surgeon has removed the cataract. This permits much more reliable measurement that requires, typically, only a couple of extra minutes of time while in the operating room. It does not require any repositioning of the patient in the midst of surgery because the ORA is attached to the operating microscope that is being used throughout the procedure. It does not require a second trip to the operating suite for lens implantation, because a full consignment of lens types and powers are kept on hand in our surgical suite. For the patient and surgeon the process is seamless, while the improved results are dramatic. Studies looking at the results after use of the ORA versus with traditional lens measurements find that the number of patients with excellent (within 0.5 diopters of the goal) results improved by about 50%. In addition to the improvement in lens power selection, the ORA provides valuable information for dealing with

astigmatism. Astigmatism is a natural irregularity of the shape of the front of the eye that leads to a distortion of images both near and far without glasses correction. Traditional intraocular lenses used at the time of cataract surgery are incapable of correcting astigmatism, confining the patient with significant astigmatism to constant glasses wear, even after cataract surgery, for all distances. The ORA measures astigmatism while in the operating room, permitting two useful strategies for reducing astigmatism postoperatively in these patients: 1) specialized premium lens implants called toric lenses can be chosen and accurately positioned in the eye to maximize reduction of astigmatism, 2) standard lens implants can be used, but supplemented with corneal incisions guided by the ORA to help reduce astigmatism. These strategies can reduce or eliminate astigmatic glasses need after surgery. It is always important to keep in mind that no technology or surgical procedure is perfect. The ORA Wavefront Aberrometer is one more tool that improves our results after cataract surgery. No machine or surgeon can guarantee a patient perfect glassesfree eyesight after surgery. Almost all patients, regardless of technology used, will find they require glasses for near vision activities after cataract surgery. Almost all patients will find their distance vision could be improved, at least slightly, by a mild pair of glasses for the distance after surgery. The ORA and other technologies we use at Delaware Eye Institute permit a larger number of patients to function more comfortably for more activities without the use of spectacles. We are committed to continued advances that facilitate continued improvement in these results. The most ringing endorsement I can give is to echo Dr. Robinson’s statement that “If I, or my family members, were having cataract surgery I would insist on my surgeon use the ORA System intraoperatively”.

Sunglasses Protect Your Vision By: Glenn Courtney, A.B.O.C. of Delaware Eye Optical Did you know that the human eye is less than 2 percent of the bodies surface, but is the only organ that allows visible light in to the human body. Even with evolution and the development in defenses such as recessed eyes, eyebrows, squinting and eye lashes too much UV light still reaches the eye passing through the cornea on the way to the retinas at the back of your eyes. The need to protect the eyes from such maladies as photokeratitis (sun burn of the eyes) , Pterygium ( Growth of the conjunctiva on the surface of the eye), Cataracts ( a leading cause of blindness in the world today), and cancer of the eye, ( which science increasingly believe life long exposure to the sun increases risk). Sunglasses can help decrease the risk of these health issues associated with exposure to ultraviolet A & B , and infrared light. Concerns of exposure to ultraviolet A & B are known, infrared is a more recent concern due to longer life spans and it’s association with macular degeneration. The public’s awareness and knowledge of these issues with sun exposure and its affects is around 75 percent , but only 31 percent actually follow through and wear sunglasses to protect their eyes. Sunglasses are the primary way to protect your eyes from exposure to UV light and in most cases today’s sun-wear both in non prescription and prescription block up to 100 percent of ultraviolet light. Today there are countless companies selling verious qualities of sunglasses that are reﬂected in the price and in some cases protection. Price does not necessarily determine protection from UV but can reﬂect quality of materials in both the lens and frame. So if you are someone who losses their sunglasses often lower price might be your choice, but if you enjoy boating, ride a motorcycle , hike, go to the beach , drive or just spend a lot of time outdoors enjoying

other activities high quality sun wear should be your selection. Lens designs vary from CR39 a simple non prescription tinted lens to a Trivex, Polarized, backside Anti Reflective, double gradient mirrored lens. There are a number of popular beliefs out there about your cardiovascular health that might be misleading and dangerous when it comes to keeping your heart healthy. Here are some of the most common ones: 1. “Heart disease runs in my family, so it’s only a matter of time until I get it too” No question there is a strong genetic component to heart disease, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do something about it. On the contrary, a strong and consistent set of measures should be taken early to dramatically reduce your risk: stay active, don’t smoke, strict cholesterol control, treat diabetes and hypertension, reduce salt intake, change and stay on a healthy diet. 2. Chest pain is a sure sign of a heart attack”. Not quite. Chest pain remains the most common symptom of a heart attack, but there are many others just as important that can be subtle: Shortness of breath,

dizziness, nausea, pain or discomfort in the arms, shoulders, jaw, mid upper back, or palpitations. It’s important to recognize any so these symptoms and to call 911 immediately.

3. “ I can get to the hospital just as fast ( or faster) than the ambulance can” Wrong and very dangerous for many reasons: The emergency medical system staff will initiate the right treatment and activate the hospital system ahead of your arrival in the hospital. You will get into the emergency department much faster. Don’t be a fool, call 911 and let them help you instead. People have had cardiac arrest while driving and have become unconscious, causing fatal accidents. 4. “ I am too young to worry about heart disease”. An early adoption of a healthy life style will have a tremendous impact in the prevention of cardiovascular disease later on. The heart attack someone might have in their 40’s or 50’s began as a process of plaque accumulation in the coronary arteries and others in childhood and adolescent years. So, educating your children for life long healthy living is perhaps the most important legacy.

8. “ I stopped my medicines because my blood pressure was normal, or my cholesterol was normal or I feel good now”. Very often people assume that once your blood pressure and cholesterol reach the recommended levels, then the job is done and the medications are no longer needed. The reality is these are chronic problems and need maintenance and continued treatment. Please consult with your doctor before stoping any medication on your own. Feeling better is fine, but it might be because you have been on that treatment in the first place. If you are having trouble affording medications, talk to your doctor to be switched to a less expensive alternative or they may have certain discount programs available to you. 9. “Aspirin is a good blood thinner to prevent strokes if you have atrial fibrillation”. This is a common one. The truth is that if you have this heart rhythm problem you are at a much higher risk for a stroke and you need to be on a true blood thinner, such as warfarin or one of the newer

agents now available on the market. Aspirin alone is not an effective treatment in this situation. 10. “Drinking a glass of wine a day reduces your risk of heart disease.” The question is -- how big is your glass of wine? The recommended amount of daily consumption of wine is 5 ounces for women and men over the age of 65. For men under age 65 they can have 2 glasses of 5 ounce each. The standard wine glasses hold between 12-14 ounces of wine, so it is very easy to consume more than intended. Red wine contains the antioxidant resveratrol, which has been studied in animals to potentially reduce the risk of heart disease, but recent research has discredited some of this claim. The same antioxidant can be obtained from eating grapes and drinking grape juice, so wine consumption is not necessary for this potential benefit. Just some food for thought. Maybe over a glass of red wine, or maybe not.

5. “Diabetes won’t affect my heart so long as I take my medicines”. It’s critically important to keep a very strict control of diabetes and sugar levels to reduce the risk of a heart attack and stroke. However, you still remain at high risk for those events. Weight loss, regular exercise, smoking cessation, controlling blood pressure and cholesterol become even more important if you are also diabetic. 6. “ I will know when my blood pressure is high because I will have a headache” High blood pressure continues to be a “silent killer” and most people will have no symptoms, until it’s late and other organ systems are involved. Early detection and effective treatment of high blood pressure are absolutely critical in preventing stroke, heart attacks, heart failure, and kidney failure. Check your blood pressure regularly and discuss it with your health care provider.

7. “ Cholesterol checks are for older people”. Not exactly. The American Heart Association recommends an initial cholesterol check at age 20. Early detection and intervention are very important. If you have a very strong family history for heart disease, checking before age 20 is a good idea as well. Again a healthy diet and regular exercise are the cornerstone of treatment.

Blood Bank of Delmarva’s Summer of Rock and Roll 2016 Blood Challenge But while we’re playing, relaxing and enjoying the great outdoors there’s a large segment of the population of the Delmarva region who won’t be experiencing those pleasures of the season and need our help. They’ll need blood! Blood recipients come in all shapes, sizes, colors and ages and their needs are unique. Some are the victims of accidents or trauma and need the lifesaving gift of blood to replenish what they’ve lost in an emergency situation and THEY NEED IT IMMEDIATELY! There are those afflicted with cancer, particularly leukemia, who may need multiple transfusions of red blood cells and platelets. Sickle cell patients, especially with severe complications, have been known to use up to 15 units of red blood cells to treat their condition. Newborn babies, especially if they’re prematurely born, have been known to need blood products to stay alive. And one of the largest uses of blood takes place when complications occur during and immediately following childbirth. As you can see by these few examples there are hundreds of local residents on a weekly basis who need blood. In the Delmarva region alone, over 20,000 patients a year are saved by the precious gift of life given by dedicated Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD) blood donors. But to keep that supply at an adequate level requires the dedication of thousands of donors every year who selflessly give of their time and of themselves, literally, to make sure our local blood supply is sufficient for whatever may come our way. Here’s something else you may not know, 65% of the US population cannot donate blood! And, of the 35% who qualify, only around 5% actually do. That means there’s a very small percentage of people who in fact donate and those numbers are starting to dwindle as many of our most dedicated donors start to “age out” of the donor pool. What concerns most every blood organization in the country is that we’re not seeing younger donors coming in to replace our lifelong donors. In other words, the next generation is not showing up to “carry the torch” and donate blood. No matter how advanced modern science becomes, there is still no substitute for human blood. The 20,000 plus local patients a year we serve would be in serious trouble, if not deceased, if it wasn’t for those dedicated individuals who continue to answer the call and return time and again to our centers to donate. That’s why we are making an urgent plea for you to seriously consider becoming a blood donor. Starting in May and continuing through September 24th, 2016, you will have the perfect opportunity to try donating blood while also being incentivized to do so. Recognizing National Stroke Month What is a Stroke? Strokes occur when the

blood supply to the brain is reduced by a “blockage” of a blood vessel (Ischemic Stroke) or when a blood vessel in the brain “bursts” (Hemorrhagic Stroke). The lack of oxygen and nutrient supply to the brain causes the brain tissue to die. The injured part of the brain ceases to perform its function. According to the American Heart / American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA), Stroke is a leading cause of death in women. In 2010, 60% (77,109 of 129,476) of deaths related to stroke occurred in women. The national mortality rate estimates, stroke kills about 137,000 people each year.

The AHA / ASA estimate each year, approximately 795,000 people in the United States experience a stroke which translates to a stroke occurring every 40 seconds! Stroke is the leading cause of disability for all Americans with nearly half of the people who survive experiencing signiﬁcant deﬁcits such as weakness or cognitive dysfunctions. Prevention is the key! Each person should be aware of their risk factors and make all possible attempts to decrease their threat for stroke.

Stroke risk factors that are controllable:

cigarette smoking; diabetes; high blood pressure; artery disease; atrial fibrillation (irregular heart beat); high cholesterol; poor diet; obesity; and lack of physical activity. Risk factors that cannot be changed: age; heredity; prior stroke / TIA / heart attack; race; and sex. According to the AHA / ASA, specifically for women, studies have shown the “use of birth control pills, pregnancy, history of preeclampsia/eclampsia or gestational diabetes, oral contraceptive use and smoking, and postmenopausal hormonal therapy may pose a special stroke risk”. High blood pressure (hypertension) is one major contributing factor in women. According to the AHA / ASA “2014 Guidelines for the Prevention of Stroke in Women”, studies have suggested high blood pressure is seen more in men until after the age of 55 at which time women meet or exceed men in the numbers. Some research studies have also found as many as 75% of women after the age of 60 become hypertensive. Currently there is no evidence that there is a difference in the treatment plan of high blood pressure of women versus men. The medications and diet plans are similar. However, there are studies that indicate it is more difficult to control high blood pressure in women, so women should be closely monitored. The hormonal differences and other physiological mechanisms may be influencing factors in difficulties to control the blood pressure.

Sometimes stroke is not preventable. The important point to remember is to recognize the signs of stroke and to take immediate action. The signs and symptoms of stroke are similar in men and women. The AHA / ASA recommend remembering “FAST”:

F – Facial droop A – Arm weakness S – Speech diﬃculty T – Time; Time to call “911”

A person loses approximately 2 million brain cells per minute during a stroke. There are treatment options that may be able to save brain cells if the person arrives quickly to the hospital by calling “911”. Specialized treatment options may be available for patients whose symptoms started less than 4.5 hours before arrival to the hospital but the real goal is as “FAST” as possible.

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) What is it? Why does it matter?

Each year, millions of people across the country are diagnosed with Peripheral Artery Disease or PAD. PAD occurs when the peripheral arteries - like those in the legs and arms - become narrowed due to a buildup of plaque. Plaque is made up of deposits of fat, cholesterol or other substances. When plaque deposits build up over time on the inside walls of the arteries is blocks blood flow or “narrows” the artery. PAD is a common condition in the United States in those over 50 years of age or those who are smokers, have high cholesterol or blood pressure, or have diabetes. About half of those with PAD don’t have symptoms or mistake their symptoms for something else. PAD most often occurs in the legs or lower extremities, and the most commom symptoms are: • Cramping, pain or fatigue in the legs when you are walking. This pain usually goes away when you are resting and comes back when you walk again. The pain can be sever and limit your ability to participate in activities. • Burning or aching pain in the feet and toes while resting, especially at night while lying flat. • Cool skin on your feet or a redness or color changes in the skin. • Sores on your feet or toes that do not heel. Left untreated PAD can lead to gangrene or amputation. PAD is dangerous and can be life threatening. These blockages can limit blood flow to the limbs, organs, or brain. When the blockage occurs in the carotid artery, it can lead to a stroke.

You can help reduce your risk of developing PAD by: • Not smoking • Controlling your diabetes • Controlling your blood pressure and cholesterol • Maintaining a healthy weight • Maintaining an active lifestyle • Eating a heart healthy diet

If you have symptoms of PAD, talk to your doctor right away.

While PAD can be a life-threatening condition, it can often be managed or even reversed with proper treatment. If you have PAD, your doctor can help you control symptoms of PAD through recommended diet and exercise plans. If you are 40 year or older and haven’t exercised in a while, your doctor may put you on a supervised exercise plan to start. He or she can also help by providing information about resources to help you quit smoking. For some patients, prescribed medications such as those to help control blood pressure and cholesterol are used to reduce the risk for PAD. Occasionally, a patient may require a minimally invasive treatment such as angioplasty or stent placement to help clear a blockage and maintain blood ﬂow.

For many, when they talk about heart attacks, they think it is a man’s problem. In truth women are just as likely to die from a heart attack as men and two thirds of women having a heart attack did not have any previous symptoms. Women also tend to wait longer before seeking medical help. Like with men a woman may experience chest pain or discomfort when having a heart attack. But women are more likely to experience some other common symptoms as well, such as: • Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in center of chest lasting more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back. • Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, back, neck, jaw or stomach. • Pressure or pain in upper abdomen or back. • Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort. • Extreme fatigue. • Breaking into a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness • Restlessness, insomnia or anxiety • Bluish skin or numbness in lips, hands or feet • Nausea or vomiting

Delaware Palliative Delaware Palliative, a program of Delaware Hospice works as a trusted community partner in end of life education and support in Delaware. Written by Kevin Loftus Director of Development, Marketing & Communications La Red Health Center, (LRHC) received a 2016 $100,000 Collaboration Grant from the Delaware Community Foundation, (DCF) in support of its Comprehensive Case Management for the Homeless Program. The grant is designed to coordinate the delivery of a range of services to the homeless population in Sussex County through a collaborative effort with Tap Faith,(TF) and the ACE Peer Resource Center, (ACE) known as the Sussex County Coalition,(SCC). Previously, in 2015, the DCF provided $50,000 in seed money to help get the SCC started. Per William Allan, SVP for Southern Delaware, “DCF helps communities identify their most critical needs, and then we facilitate collaborative efforts to address those issues. We are particularly proud of this collaborative grant since it results in organizations working together and leveraging charitable dollars most effectively.” Working together, the SCC objectives include: identifying the homeless, providing individual case management assistance, emergency supplies, housing placement, healthcare, mental health counseling, life-skills training, and job readiness support to build the individual resilience needed to maintain independent living. In addition, the SCC provides support to encourage clients to create and implement

Going forward, LRHC’s Case Manager for the homeless will continue to conduct community outreach in schools, businesses and churches and outreach into areas where high risk for homeless populations reside and congregate.

ACE will continue to provide peer support, support groups, health and wellness workshops, donated clothing, support in obtaining documentation, and emergency survival supplies.

LRHC’s Case Manager will also conduct intake interviews to assess the needs of the client to determine which clients are in need of primary medical and dental care and substance abuse and/or mental health services.

In addition, ACE will provide access to an educational job readiness and job search computer lab with free Internet access, and assist clients with resume writing and online job applications. Jim Martin, Director and Program Manager of ACE indicated that, “By teaming up with other peers in recovery, the community formed at ACE creates a hospitality net of kindness, compassion and empathy”

Tap Faith will provide guidance and hope for the homeless and those in need by utilizing established emergency transitional housing and outreach services, leading to self-sufficiency and self-worth. Assist and refer people in crisis to various programs including: shelters, food, clothing, counseling, lifeskill education, education and job training services, and housing.

According to Gene Louis, Chair of Tap Faith, “We’ve learned about hopelessness from the tears of homeless mothers and the long stare of homeless men. We exist to help the less fortunate, particularly those rich hearts, clothed by the poor coat of homelessness. We are chained, driven and called to do this work. We are blessed to work with the ACE Center and La Red Health Center and to be supported by the Delaware Community Foundation and also honored to have our work recognized by Mountaire Farms.”

An estimated 6,000 individuals are homeless in Delaware throughout a year, and on any given night, it is estimated that as many as 650 people experience homelessness in Sussex County, with many more individuals and families at risk to experience homelessness. What is gum recession? Gum recession refers to the loss of gum tissue along the gum line. to Spread Awareness of Elder Abuse By Carolyn O’Neal CHEER COMMUNITY RELATIONS DIRECTOR Elder abuse refers to intentional or neglectful acts by a caregiver or “trusted” individual that lead to, or may lead to, harm of a vulnerable elder. Elder abuse can occur anywhere – in the home, in nursing homes or other institutions. It affects seniors across all socioeconomic groups, cultures, and races. Every year, an estimated ﬁve million, or 1 in 10, older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Experts believe that for every case of elder abuse or neglect reported, as many as 23.5 cases go unreported. (Yes – I said 23.5 go unreported.)

The first World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was launched on June 15, 2006 in an effort to unite communities around the world in raising awareness about elder abuse. CHEER is joining the effort on Wednesday, June 15 by distributing purple ribbons at its CHEER Activity Centers and asking everyone to wear purple in recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. CHEER encourages everyone to learn the warning signs of mistreatment. Red flags of elder abuse are: Neglect: • Lack of basic hygiene, adequate food, or clean and appropriate clothing • Lack of medical aids (glasses, walker, medication, etc.) • Person with dementia left unsupervised • Person confined to bed is left without care • Home cluttered, filthy, in disrepair, or having fire and safety hazards

• Home without adequate facilities (stove, refrigerator, heat, electricity, plumbing, etc.) • Untreated pressure “bed” sores/ulcers Financial Abuse/Exploitation: • Lack of amenities victim could afford • Vulnerable elder/adult “voluntarily” giving uncharacteristically excessive ﬁnancial reimbursement/gifts for needed care and companionship • Caregiver has control of elder’s money but is failing to provide for elder’s needs • Vulnerable elder/adult has signed property transfers (Power of Attorney, new will, etc.) but is unable to comprehend the transaction or what it means Psychological/Emotional Abuse: • Unexplained or uncharacteristic changes in behavior, such as withdrawal from normal activities, unexplained changes in alertness, other unexplained behavior • Caregiver isolates elder (doesn’t let anyone into the home or speak to the elder) • Caregiver is verbally aggressive or demeaning, controlling, overly concerned about spending money, or uncaring Physical/Sexual Abuse: • Inadequately explained fractures, bruises, welts, cuts, sores or burns • Unexplained sexually transmitted diseases CHEER also encourages you to protect yourself from abuse, neglect and exploitation. Anyone can be victimized. However, there are things you can do to help protect yourself from abuse and neglect. Plan! Talk with family members, friends and professionals that you trust and plan for your future. Consider doing the following: • Have your income directly deposited into your bank account. • Talk with an attorney about creating a living will, a revocable trust, and a durable power of attorney for healthcare and/or asset management. Do not be pressured or intimidated into immediate decisions. • Don’t sign any documents that you don’t completely understand. • Do not provide personal information over the phone unless you placed the call and know with whom you are speaking. • If you hire someone for personal assistance, in home care services, etc., ensure that they have been properly screened with criminal background checks completed. (CHEER’s Personal Assistance Services Direct Care Workers have all undergone an extensive background check before being employed.) • Stay Connected. Keep in touch regularly with others. Build a network of family, friends and neighbors that you can interact with. Keep active and busy. Get involved with your CHEER Activity Center or other groups. Create a buddy system with other elders. Call each other daily for reassurance and friendship. Isolation can make you vulnerable to abuse. If you suspect an elder abuse situation, report it immediately. Do not tell the caregiver or family – they may be the ones doing the abuse. Contact the Delaware Health and Social Services (DHSS) Adult Protective Services at 1-800-223-9074. The agency will ask what you observed, who was involved, and who they can contact to learn more. You do not need to prove that abuse is occurring; it is up to the professionals to investigate the suspicions. Making a report in instances of abuse or neglect is the right thing to do. Don’t be afraid. Elders have a right to be safe! The Weight is Over: To Sleeve or Not to Sleeve? Thomas P. Barnett, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Barnett graduated from Princeton University in 1983 and obtained his medical degree from George Washington University in 1987. He completed his surgical training at Thomas Jefferson University affiliate Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia in 1992. He served in the U.S. Air Force at Dover Air Force Base (DAFB) from 1992-1996 where he started the Laparoscopic/ Minimally Invasive & Ambulatory Surgery programs. Dr. Barnett was Chief of Surgery at DAFB Hospital in 1995 and 1996. He has continued to practice surgery in Dover, Delaware ever since being honorably discharged and he founded his private practice, Surgical Associates, P.A., in 1999. Dr. Barnett is Board Certified in Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Society for Metabolic Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Medical Society of Delaware. Dr. Barnett has special interests in weight loss surgery. He currently serves as the medical director of bariatric surgery at BayhealthMilford Memorial Hospital and the Delaware Surgery Center in Dover.

Weight loss surgery has evolved over the last 30 years. Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (”Sleeve surgery”) or taking out a portion of the stomach (see diagram 1) has emerged as the most common weight loss procedure in America over the last couple of years. It is estimated that in 2017, 70-80% of the weight loss surgeries done in the US will be the sleeve gastrectomy. This surgery is done through a series of incisions, most of which are the diameter of a dime. The Sleeve surgery basically converts the stomach from football size to banana size. The decreased size of the stomach

causes a restriction feeling to the patient when they eat and therefore they will eat less. In addition, the surgery removes a part of the stomach that produces a hormone called ghrelin, which is secreted by the oxyntic cells of the fundus in response to fasting. Ghrelin stimulates appetite. The Sleeve decreases the amount of ghrelin produced and therefore patients are able to better control their hunger. Patients who have weight loss surgery have significant positive metabolic effects as well. Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea improve and therefore decrease obesity related morbidity and mortality. Many patients will be able to decrease or completely get off medications for high blood pressure and diabetes. Back and knee pain also improve with weight loss. In a recent study from the Netherlands on 1000 patients undergoing sleeve surgery, they found on average, an excess weight loss of 86.6% in the first postoperative

year, 84.2% after two years, and 84.5% after 3 years. Pre-existent comorbidities appear to improve or even resolve after sleeve surgery. Resolution of type 2 diabetes occurs in 60-96% of the patients. Dr. Sandra Costa is not only a family physician, but a sleeve surgery patient of Dr. Barnett’s herself. She has lost 108 pounds since starting her “sleeve journey.” She had her surgery in November 2015 at Milford Memorial Hospital. “I consider that day my rebirthday. I was born obese at almost 12 pounds and put on weight every year until my sleeve journey began. I feel much better and more energetic.” Francis Fooks, another patient of Dr. Barnett’s, has gone from 318 to 183 pounds 10 months after her Sleeve surgery. “I was able to get off all my medications and get rid of my sleep apnea machine. This surgery has given me my life back! Dr. Barnett, Nicole Fisher ,PA-C, the team at Surgical

Associates, and Milford Hospital have been extremely supportive throughout my weight loss journey.” There are risks with all weight loss surgical procedures. These include, but are not limited to bleeding, infection, obstruction, leaks, and the need for reoperation. Death has occurred in rare cases. Fortunately, with the sleeve gastrectomy, safety profiles have been proven to be high with few serious complications. Sleeve surgery causes less nutritional deficiencies post-operatively compared to the gastric bypass. Complications after Sleeve surgery in the literature vary from 2.9 to 9.5% which appear to be lower than the complication rate after gastric bypass, varying between 4.6 and 20.5% in the literature. Connect And Protect: Helping Seniors Here, Children Around The Globe

Walgreens recently launched “Connect and Protect” program (through June 30), which is educating our senior patients over age 65 on the need to get two other vaccinations: shingles and pneumonia. Shingles is an extremely painful skin rash that can last upward of a month and cause other complications such as nerve pain or, in more severe cases, pneumonia, blindness, hearing problems, brain inflammation and even death. Through informational brochures and pharmacist consultations with patients, Connect and Protect also brings seniors up to speed on the pneumonia immunization, which now consists of two doses based on a new CDC recommendation announced this year. Most seniors aren’t aware of the change and their age group is particularly atrisk for pneumonia, an upper-respiratory tract infection and a leading cause of vaccine-preventable illness and death in the U.S. Because so many of our patients are over 65, Walgreens is at a key spot to help fill in that information gap. Closing the immunization gap is also the theme of World Immunization Week (held every April), a global initiative by the World Health Organization to raise awareness of the importance of being fully immunized throughout life. Look at any stock photo of a pharmacist and she’ll probably be counting pills or ﬁlling a pill bottle. As a pharmacist, dispensing medications accurately and safely is as important as anything we do. But most people do not know how much more a pharmacist can do for you.

Important Facts about Falls The Center for Disease Control and Prevention -CDC- reports that • Each year millions of older people—those 65 and older—fall. In fact one out of three older people fall each year, but less than half tell their doctor. Falling once doubles your chances of falling again. • One out of five falls causes a serious injury, such as broken bones or a head injury. • Each year 2.5 million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries. • Over 700,000 patients a year are hospitalized because of a fall injury, most often because of a head injury or hip fracture. • More than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falling, usually by falling sideways. • Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries (TBI).* Although many falls do not cause injuries, it is reported by the CDC that one out of five falls does cause a serious injury. These injuries include head injuries and/ or broken bones. These types of injuries can cause persons to be unable to do their normal activities of daily living, such as cooking, cleaning, shopping, and personal care. Often the person loses their ability to live independently. There are many risk factors that contribute to falling; which includes both prescription and over the counter medications, vision problems, difficulties with balance and walking, memory deficits, and many home hazards.

To help prevent falls: • Have you eyes checked regularly • Talk to your doctor about medications you are taking both prescribed and over the counter, to see which one may be high fall risk medications, such as sedatives, pain relievers or antidepressants • Always get up slowly after sitting or lying down. Take your time and make sure you have your balance. • Wear proper fitting shoes with low heels. • If needed, use a correctly measured walking aid. • Remove or tack down all scatter rugs. • Remove electrical or telephone cords from traffic areas. • Avoid using slippery wax on floors. • Wipe up spills promptly. • Avoid standing on ladders or chairs. • Have sturdy hand rails for all stairs inside and outside the home, or, if necessary, purchase a stair lift. • Make sure that all staircases have good lighting with switches at top and bottom. • Staircase steps should have a non-slip surface. • Be sure you have enough light to see where you are walking. Keep a night light on or keep a flashlight by your bed. • Add grab bars inside and outside your tub or shower and next to the toilet. • Skid-proof the tub and make sure the bath mat has a non-slip bottom. • If possible, bathe only when help is available. Although, many risk factors can be changed or modified to help prevent falls, there are no guarantees. Older adults may have lower and/or upper body weakness that prevents them from standing or walking without someone assisting them, or those with memory deficits may not remember to use hand railings or their ambulation devices such as a walker or cane. Healing Touch

ealing Touch is an energy therapy in which the practitioners consciously use their hands in a heart-centered and intentional way to enhance, support and facilitate the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health and selfhealing. It is a biofield (magnetic field around the body) therapy that is an energy-based approach to health and healing. Chiropractic and Sciatica Dr. Tracy Hudson Dr. Hudson is a ’95 Cape Henlopen High School graduate and continued her educational career at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. While attending UNCW, Dr. Hudson suffered an injury playing softball and she sought treatment with a local chiropractor. After a few adjustments, Dr. Hudson was back on the field. Now being a true believer, she decided to further her education in the natural healing art. She attended Life University in Atlanta, GA for 3 years, and then transferred to Texas Chiropractic College in Houston. After graduating in 2004, she moved to Clearwater, FL, where she was in private practice for 8 years. During that time, she also became a Fellow of the International Academy of Medical Acupuncture. She has now moved back to her home town to share her love of chiropractic with our community.

What is sciatica?

One of the most common things people complain of, when the come to see us, is sciatica. When we ask where it hurts, some point to their leg, some to their back and a few to their shoulder. Clearly, not everyone is exactly sure what it is, so what is sciatica? Sciatica is not, technically speaking, a medical diagnosis; it is a symptom of an underlying medical condition. It is a lay term for pain that extends down the leg; pain that can really, really, really hurt!

Common symptoms of sciatica:

• Most often it starts in the lower back and travels into the thigh; it can travel further down the leg to the foot and toes • Sciatica is not only felt as pain, it can be felt as a burning or tingling sensation • In advanced cases there can be numbness or weakness of the leg muscles • Sciatica mostly affects one leg, rarely does it affect both

What causes sciatica?

A bit of anatomy to begin with…. Sciatica gets its name from the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve runs from your low back down each of your legs to your toes. It is formed from the nerve roots (nerves that come out of the spine) L4-S3 at the bottom of the spine. All these nerve roots join together to form the largest nerve in the human body; about the size of your index and middle ﬁnger together. The sciatic nerves feed each of your legs with messages from the brain and back again. This allows you to move your legs and walk, feel sensation when something touches your leg, quickly move your leg away when you stand on your kids Lego in the dark, and so much more! In conclusion, it’s a very big and important nerve.

The most common causes of sciatica:

• A trapped nerve in the lumbar spine affecting the sciatic nerve • A disc herniation – one of the discs in the spine bulges out to the side (‘slipped disc’) and presses on the lower lumber nerve roots (that form the sciatic nerve) • Piriformis syndrome – the piriformis is a muscle in your buttocks that the

How do you treat sciatica?

With the causes listed above, in our humble opinions, a combination of Chiropractic adjustments, massage, stretching and cryotherapy (using an ice pack). With this approach you are addressing any misalignments of the spine and pelvis through the Chiropractic adjustments which takes the pressure off the nerves and aides the recovery of any disc herniation (“slipped disc”). Massage relaxes the tight muscles around the spine and the piriformis if needed, which compliments what the Chiropractic adjustments are doing and relaxes any trigger points in the muscles of the lower back and buttocks. Stretching at home helps between seeing your Chiropractor and massage therapist, and the ice pack reduces the inﬂammation around the nerve, again aiding a speedier recovery. An important ﬁnal note: The symptom sciatica can be caused by serious underlying conditions and should be checked thoroughly by

a trained physician who performs a complete physical examination of your muscles and joints and neurological examination of your nerves. If you have any change in your bowel or bladder habits (unusually can’t control or go!) or numbness in your “saddle” area, coupled with severe back or leg pain, then you potentially have something called cauda equina. This is a medical emergency and you should contact the emergency services immediately. As a Chiropractor, it is our job to ensure that the complaint you have is a Chiropractic case. How does CoolSculpting Work? The technology behind CoolSculpting was developed by Harvard scientists who noted that fat was destroyed by cold under certain conditions. CoolSculpting is a result of their efforts to harness and reﬁne this application of cold to selectively remove unwanted fat deposits in a safe manner. During a treatment, your unwanted fatty area will be pressed and chilled to a temperature 12 degrees above freezing. At this temperature the fat within fat cells crystallizes. When the fat within the cells crystallizes, it damages and kills the fat cell. Skin and other tissue is not damaged as the water in other cells is not crystallized, only fat. The body will then eliminate the killed fat cells over time. The best news is that we do not make new fat cells. Fat cells merely get bigger or smaller as they store more fat or lose fat. So in essence the fat removal from CoolSculpting is permanent. And we have seen instances of patients who if they gain weight, the weight will not return to the treated areas. What are the most common areas to be treated? Many people on a weight loss program continue to have stubborn hard to lose areas, no matter how much dieting, sit ups or weight they lose. Such stubborn areas are typically around the abdomen, the love handles and inner thighs. Once you are over forty, losing fat in these areas is extremely difﬁcult. These are the areas that CoolSculpt can address. Basically if there is an area you can pinch several inches, that area can be treated and eliminated

by CoolSculpt. Most of our patients are interested in losing fatty areas in the upper and lower abdomen, the mufﬁn top, waist, brat fat, back fat, love handles, and “mommy pooches.” We can also treat arms, thighs and saddle bags.

Are there any side effects from CoolSculpting? The side effects from a CoolSculpting treatment are minimal. It is possible Before to have bruising after the treatment, which resolves in a week. Gradually this sensation lessens to the point during the treatment any uncomfortable sensation is minimal. In 2006, Rosa received the Hispanic Professional Achiever Award from the Latin American Community Center and in October 2007 she received an award from ABC Channel 6 Community Advisory Board for her outstanding community service. Appointed by Governor Minner, Rosa served in the Delaware Healthy Mother and Infant Consortium and was a former member of the Governor’s Consortium on Hispanic Affairs. She also served as a volunteer Board Member for the Neighborhood House, Inc. in Wilmington. A graduate from Wilmington’s University, she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and graduated with honors Cum Laude. Rosa was named Henrietta Johnson Medical Center’s CEO in 2005 following 18 years with the health center. Rosa now serves as the Operations Officer of La Red Health Center. Rob Nicholson Rob Nicholson has spent the last 15 years working with various technologies in the military and private industry. He was raised in New Castle and graduated from Salesianum High School. Rob then joined the Navy to be a meteorologist and worked extensively with propagation modeling for atmospheric radar systems & oceanographic acoustics. After six years of service, Rob moved to Lewes with his fiancée to be close to his family and put down roots. He started a photography business and enrolled in the new Entrepreneurship program at Delaware Technical Community College where he was awarded Outstanding Entrepreneurship Student of the year. He was published in several magazines, received dozens of awards, and photographed 100+ events including a private function in Jamaica with Prince Charles. Rob then created a nationwide photography group of over 4,000 members and conducted Internet marketing presentations to thousands of photographers. In 2011, Rob decided to complete his degree and enter the job market. He went on to obtain his bachelor’s degree in Natural Science & Mathematics 2012 and a master’s degree in Management of Marketing in 2015. Southern Delaware Advancement Officer & Grant Writer, Ronald McDonald House of Delaware Laura Marek is the Southern Delaware Advancement Officer & Grant Writer for the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware. She resides in Magnolia, DE, but spends a lot of her time traveling throughout Sussex County, raising awareness and funds for the Ronald McDonald House. The Ronald McDonald House of Delaware is a “home away from home” for families with seriously or chronically ill or injured children receiving medical treatment at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children or Christiana Hospital. The House is located in Wilmington, however, the families who stay generally live 25 miles or further from their child’s hospital. On an annual basis, more than 26 percent of the families who stay at the Ronald McDonald House reside in Sussex County. That’s about 600 families per year. Laura has worked in the non-profit arena her entire career and is passionate about her work. Every dollar raised for the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware helps in keeping families close to the care their sick children need, and to each other. Laura is a member of the Bayhealth Patient Partnership Council and is a founder and volunteer for the Fund for Women. Laura is originally from Buffalo, NY, but moved to Delaware in 2013. Why coat your garage floor?

Why apply an epoxy garage floor coating? Because your garage will look so cool! A primary motivation for coating your garage floor is aesthetic. Your choices in color are limitless; you can put your team or car logo in the floor or chose a compliment to the color scheme of your home. Here are a few things to look for when you are shopping for a floor coating. The floor coating should have a dry film thickness of 40 – 50 mils. This is about 5x thicker than the homeowner applied coatings. As such, the coating is able to cover minor imperfections in the floor and withstand dropped wrenches without damage. Surface preparation is the key to any successful coating. The professional will use a diamond grinder or shot blaster to put a profile or “tooth” on the floor to help the epoxy coating adhere. Surface preparation also opens up the pores of the concrete allowing the epoxy coating to soak into the concrete and create an even stronger bond. An epoxy formulation for the base coat and a poly aspartic top coat is the ideal combination. The epoxy is able to absorb into the prepared floor surface creating a strong mechanical bond. Are You a Tilter or a Lifter? That’s a question we have asked many times through the years. What we are really asking is whether you are looking for blinds or shades. That is a major dividing line when choosing window coverings and there are pros and cons to both especially when you are speaking about function. “Shasta Shutterbug” Has Arrived!

BY: MIKE BAKER I always like to do things with my photography just a little different or something more my way. My “Shasta Shutterbug” camper photo booth was an idea I saw online from California and Florida. My niece, Ashley, had sent a couple of pictures to me, and I started to research. It’s also something popular in Europe. Most of those are from the back of a VW bus or a similar style vehicle. I initially spotted this 1969 Shasta Compact Camper for sale about a year ago alongside a local road. Not knowing what I could do with it, I somewhat shelved the idea of buying it. After I had seen some ideas online, I knew I needed that “Shasta.” I was sure it was already sold. I took a 15-minute drive where I saw it previously. There it was still sitting there waiting for me. I immediately jumped on the idea. I purchased the camper and started looking at different ones all over the US. There are not many “camper photo booths” out there. I never realized how big photo booths are becoming. I shoot many weddings throughout the year and started noticing the appeal. I figured photo booths would be more of a short-term fad and dwindle away. Not true! They are getting more and more popular. So this was my winter project! So ideas started rolling through my mind. I had my daughter, Courtney, listen to my ideas. Not good. Seems like she had better ideas then I did. Most 21 year olds know more about what attracts the younger crowds. She’s the designer, I did the engineering and labor. My 21-year-old daughter knew what was “in” more than I did. She was attending UD while I worked on it and came home to check on it (and my work). I was blessed with a relatively warm fall and winter. One never knows what’s underneath until you start pulling it apart. I replaced some walls and floors from 47 years of weathering. Put new ceiling and wall coverings with a hardwood floor. It is decked out with a stereo system inside and outside, a photo booth and seating. Sorry no room for rest rooms. After Courtney placed it on Facebook, it was booked instantly the next day for 2 bookings. It was an instant hit at the 2016 Heart Ball in Dover. We also made a 2 day appearance at the Dover International Speedway on the recent race weekend. We have gotten many bookings already for weddings, gala events and other outdoor events. We also have the standard photo booth, but I think this one has gotten much attention. After all, this is the first one in the First State!

Lifelong Learning—A Key to Successful Aging BY NORA RIEHL ZELLUK, Professional and Continuing Studies, University of Delaware “Some people have said ‘successful aging’ is an oxymoron,” noted Dilip Jeste, director of the Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging at the University of California, San Diego. Current research says otherwise. Stein Institute researchers, along with many other scientists, believe that the future of successful aging will increasingly depend on cognitive and emotional health. Researchers now widely agree that cognitive decline is not an inevitable part of the aging process. Research on aging offers a striking model of aging as a potential time of brain health and growth. Mental stimulation and creative outlets can provide the opportunity to lead better quality lives ﬁlled with more knowledge and wisdom — and an

increased capacity to contribute to society.

In one study, participants in creative programs like poetry writing, painting, or choral singing classes reported better physical health than those in the control group, and reported learning “new skills and new ways of looking at and expressing things.”

An amazing variety of courses are offered through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes at UD. Students take courses in art, history, literature, health, computers, yoga, philosophy, memoir writing, music, languages, genealogy, and much more. There are no exams or homework – just learning for the fun of it.

“Getting creative in your later years is a self-fueling engine,” is the message of Dr. Gene Cohen, founder of George Washington University’s Center on Aging, Health & Humanities. “The more you do, the more you can do.” The University of Delaware has been a leader in lifelong learning programs that offer mental stimulation, creative outlets and social connections that positively impact quality of life. The programs feature an academic cooperative model which encourages age 50 plus members to share their

When a car comes in that is not regularly washed, " we see damage from the bugâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;remainsâ&#x20AC;? on front bumpers and grilles. Even plastic headlamps and side view mirrors can be dam aged from whatever the bugs leave behind. Remember if the dogs playing ‘reciprocate the play’ then all is good and every one is having fun! For example, one dog chases the other dog and then they turn and the other dog chases the one dog that started out chasing. Some dogs play are very vocal. It sounds like a real fight. However, if you watch, you will see that the mouths are open yet neither dog are nipping or bitting the other. This is play too. They just use their voices in play. It is important for a proper Meet and Greet with all dogs/puppies in order to communicate that You as their owners, have control of the situation and that You will not allow anything to happen to them. You’ll protect your dog. This is important to communicate so your dog learns to Trust you and Respect you. Once again, dogs Play should always be reciprocated with both and all dogs. If it is not and you see tension and/or rough play, always call your dog back to You for a ‘Settle’ and give them ‘Me’ time.

“ GIVE US ONE TRY, AND YOU WILL KEEP COMING BACK ” A conversation with Shawn Xiong of Confucius Chinese Restaurant

Confucius Chinese Restaurant was opened in the spring of 2004 in downtown Rehoboth Beach. Shawn Xiong, the owner, had previously owned a Chinese restaurant in Wilmington prior to relocating to the beach area. Since then, Confucius has been named the best Chinese restaurant in the Delaware Today magazine and favorably mentioned in various newspaper and magazines. We had a chance to talk with Shawn XIong and the following is the summary of our conversation. Q: Why do you call your restaurant “Confucius”? X: When I started Confucius, I wanted to offer a menu that most “generic” Chinese restaurants offer. Wherever you go, you probably will

ﬁnd a Chinese eatery in every shopping center that offers pretty much the same items such as lo meins & chow meins. Our menu is more focused on items you don’t usually ﬁnd in those places. So I decided that I will not name my place “ wok” or “great wall” or “palace”, yet I want people know it is Chinese. And everybody knows who Confucius is. Q: What made you decide to relocate to Rehoboth? X: When I had my previous restaurant in Wilmington, I was working 360 days a year, 12 hours a day. After I had my son, I decided that I wanted to spend more time with him, more time with his education. Coming to a resort town, it allows me to take some time away from work without feeling guilty about it. Q: What was your biggest challenge coming to Rehoboth? X: There were plenty of challenges

I have faced. The biggest of all was not knowing the market when I ﬁrst opened. The other challenge was (and continues to be especially during the summer) to convince people that Chinese restaurant IS INDEED more than just Fried Rice and Eggrolls. There are more than 40000 Chinese eateries in this country (more than McDonalds’, Pizza Hut and all other fast food restaurant COMBINED). While this has made Chinese food popular in this country, it has made Chinese food a stereotype (think “$5.99 eat all you can eat,” “free deliveries” for example). I have to explain to people what we do, but once people give us a try, they keep coming back. Q: What are your most popular dishes? X: This is a hard question to answer. There are different popular dishes to different customers depending on their own personal taste. If you like spicy food, we offer dishes

such as Hot Pepper Chicken, Cumin Beef or Kung Pao Shrimp. If you like ﬁsh, Salmon with Black Bean Sauce, Steamed Halibut or Crispy Whole Black Sea Bass are all excellent choices. If you are a ﬁrst time customer, we encourage you to tell our server or what you do or do not like, and we will offer the right recommendation for you. I believe every customer deserves special attention at my restaurant. If they order something they don’t quite like, they are welcome to send it back for exchange AT NO COST. THE FOOD Chef Mark Buchanan and his culinary team introduced the Brick’s Spring and Summer menu at the beginning of April. “We always work to source our ingredients locally, so updating our menu to reﬂect the ﬂavors of the season supports that initiative. We’re also a Local on the Menu participating restaurant and we plan our Spring/ Summer Menu to capitalize on the available bounty of fresh, local produce and goods.” Brick Cobb Salad - The Brick Cobb includes Grilled Chicken, Bacon, Bleu Cheese Crumbles, and Hard Boiled Egg nestled in a bed of Romaine Lettuce and fresh Vegetables. Paired with your choice of dressing, this is a salad that eats like a meal!
