Stewart Muted Blue Tartan - Tartan Finder | Scottish Kilt A Brief History of Clan Stewart The Stewarts descend from the seneschals (stewards) of Dol in Brittany. The earliest members of this family mentioned are Flaad and his son Alan, who were probably recruited into the retinue of the future Henry I and accompanied him to England in 1100, where they were rewarded with lands. Alan’s son, Walter, traveled north in the retinue of the Scottish Prince David, when he claimed the Scottish throne in 1124. In reward for his services, he was created Steward of Scotland and granted extensive estates in Renfrewshire and East Lothian. From Walter the major branches of Stewart descend.
