a look round buildings of historical interest, some of which are otherwise closed to the public. The 2014 programme locally includes a chance to view inside the Grade II listed mortuary chapel in Loughton Cemetery on Sunday 14 September between 1pm and 4pm. In a year when we commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of World War I, visitors may also visit the many graves maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Buried here in a family grave is Private Sidney Godley, recipient of the Victoria Cross medal in August 1914 for his bravery to defend the Nimy railway bridge at Mons in Belgium. On 23 August, as part of the Government’s national scheme, a commemorative paving stone was laid in his birth place, East Grinstead, to honour his bravery. The town council also held a ceremony to mark the centenary of his award. Visitors can also enjoy a tree trail around Loughton Cemetery and, a new innovation this year, will see a classic car display in the adjacent car park of St John’s Church. Lopping Hall at 189 High Road, will be opening its doors to the public on Saturday 13 September from 10.30am to 4pm. Since 1884 the Hall has stood at the very centre of
Loughton and is one of the most important public buildings in the town. Despite fronting the busy High Road it is also, sadly, one of the town’s greatest secrets! This day offers the chance to visit the hall, meet some of the regular users, find out about its history and also to discover what recent improvements have been made and what the Trustees hope to achieve in the future. Entry is free and refreshments will be available. For details of other local openings visit www.loughton-tc.gov.uk or www.heritageopendays.org.uk
