Pet advice by Ardmore Veterinary Group AT THIS time of year, a very popular treat is chocolate, especially in the form of Easter eggs.

However pet owners should be cautious, especially with dogs. Chocolate in certain forms and quantities can make animals very unwell and can sometimes be fatal.

The toxic component in chocolate is something called ‘Theobromine’, which is used as a drug in certain medical conditions but can be fatal in excessive amounts. Many people have heard that chocolate is poisonous to animals but a common misconception is that they have to eat a lot. This does vary according to the type of chocolate and its theobromine concentration, and also the variation between each individual.

Therefore if there is a possibility that your pet has consumed any chocolate then it is essential to act fast and contact your vet. It is useful to give the vet some idea of the amount and the type of chocolate; they can then calculate if they require further treatment or just ongoing monitoring. If they require examination the vet will assess for signs of toxicity, which vary from gastrointestinal upsets through to seizuring and comas and instigate appropriate treatment. This treatment will depend upon the clinical signs but will often combine emetics to make the dog sick, activated charcoal to reduce theobromine absorption for the intestines, intravenous fluids and supportive care for at least 24 hours. It should be remembered, as with all poisonings that the faster the animal is seen and treated the better are the chances of successful treatment.

drops sold as treats? Well the concentration in milk chocolate is low and dog chocolate is even lower and therefore is considered safe to use as treats in relatively small concentrations.

Fantastic annual food & drink event is back

TASTE OF SUDBURY, the town’s fantastic annual event, held in the centre of Sudbury, is all about celebrating, promoting and showcasing the very best producers, restaurants and chefs that we are so lucky to have in this part of Suffolk.

This year, due to popular demand, the event has been extended to run until 6pm and, with some vital sponsorship from Hollow Trees Farm and Ernest Doe, we are going to have a new area outside the Town Hall with a small farm area, a huge tractor, a second kitchen theatre area run by the ICE Chefs and KSL Kitchens, a beautiful flower stall and a selection of street food trucks. There will be plenty of space for tables and chairs and we’ll have music too!

The fabulous main kitchen theatre will be back with an amazing line up of some of Suffolk’s very best chefs including award winning baker, Will Wooster, Greig Young, Head Chef of The Northgate and Fiona Murphy of Moo Moo Cakes. The award winning team from Hollow Trees Farm Butchery will be running a butchery masterclass and we’ll be joined by the Head Chef at The Long Melford Swan plus we have some surprises up our sleeve too!

Justine Paul, of Taste of Sudbury is delighted that The Long Melford Swan is headline sponsoring the event for the third year plus there is investment in 2019 from Hollow Trees Farm, Ernest Doe, Drage and Tozer and Suffolk Hideaways; ‘Having financial support and investment from such successful and well regarded local businesses has a huge impact

on this event. Essentially it means it can remain free for all to attend and we believe that offering such a top quality event, free of charge to the community, is what makes this food festival different to any other.’

Almost sixty stalls will be filling Market Hill and St Peters on June 9th selling a whole range of top quality produce including Lavenham Red Poll beef, culinary, medicinal and aromatic fresh herbs, wild boar sausage rolls, locally grown summer soft fruits, award winning sourdoughs, Suffolk and Essex sausages, jams, marinades, conserves and pates, freshly baked cakes and locally distilled gins and vodkas. There will also be a number of quirky vans and horseboxes selling Mac and Cheese, Uruguayan Empanadas, Middle Eastern Mezze platters, Buttermilk Fried Chicken, chilled glasses of Prosecco and delicious award winning ice cream.

Inside St Peter’s you’ll find a wonderful selection of local stallholders selling a range of produce including brownies, macaroons and scones, oriental sauces, Suffolk wines, local apple juices, Norwegian pastries, Suffolk biltong and local venison.

Entry to the event is totally free of charge.

Parking in town is free and there will be a free Park and Ride system in place, all day, starting at 9.45am from The Delphi Car Park, Newton Road, Sudbury, CO10 2RR. The free bus will run every 15 minutes throughout the day.

NOW IN its 12th year, the Suffolk Walking Festival (11th May to 2nd June) has established itself as one of Britain’s premier walking festivals with over 120 walks and events across our county. Last year all walkers collectively walked 24 million steps over 23 days across Suffolk!!

The 2019 festival is going to be the most creative, imaginative and ambitious one to date. From a dawn chorus to hidden orchids, Arthur Ransome to John Constable, and from Anglo-Saxons to naval heritage, there’s even murder, myths and a little bit of magic.

The festival has something for everyone: short strolls, gentle rambles, long hikes; family walks, history walks, nature walks; story-telling, art lessons, photography courses; walks with boat trips, walks with breakfasts, walks with train rides. Some of the highlights include:

• A walk with Kite, the Orford Ness sheepdog, her shepherd owner who will explain how they manage the reserve for wildlife.

• Night Safari will enter an ancient woodland just after sundown to experience the wood’s nocturnal life and talk to owls!

• A walk to Eye Airfield will reveal its war time history with a ride back in vintage military vehicles!

• And a walk discovering the fascinating history of Ipswich’s Waterfront, followed by a Thames Barge cruise down the River Orwell.

All walks are ticketed, and all tickets must be purchased in advance.
