FRONT COVER: THE QUAY THEATRE THE HISTORY of this building is associated closely with the river Stour. On the 16th Feb 1705 The River Stour Act was passed to make the River Stour navigable from Manningtree in the county of Essex to the town of Sudbury in the county of Suffolk. Two granary warehouses were built in 1791 and 1806 to facilitate the navigation’s boom period. They are still standing, one owned by the River Stour Trust for its headquarters and the other now the Quay Theatre in Sudbury.

In 1920 the Old Granary building (the Quay Theatre today) fell into disuse as the river barges, which operated along the river Stour from Sudbury to Mistley, ceased to be viable as the railways took over as a means of transport. The old East Anglian Supply Company acquired this building and in it came one of the first public generating stations. The Old Granary was fitted with a thick concrete base on which an ex German U-boat diesel engine was mounted and coupled to a dynamo. So successful was this new Station, the generators in the Old Granary eventually became overloaded.

It was sold to the Gas board in 1955 for £300.

Later, in 1963, the building was to be demolished, but it was bought by Mr Harry

Turner for conversion to an indoor cricket net. Before it could be fitted out there was the small problem of the concrete base on which the generator stood. This defied many attempts at removal after some Pneumatic Drills were damaged in the effort to break the block. A total of 90 sticks of gelignite were detonated in order to finally break the concrete. The walls of the building did not suffer from this explosions. This is perhaps not so surprising when you realise that they are over half a metre thick In the late 1970s, the River Stour Trust restored part of the old basin with the aid of a government-sponsored job creation scheme.

At the same time a separate group acquired the adjoining derelict granary building and converted it into an amateur theatre. The Quay Basin was opened for use in 1980.

Pet advice ‘KENNEL COUGH’, which is more correctly called infectious bronchitis is an infectious condition that is caused by a number of organisms, both bacterial and viruses. It is generally spread from close contact with infected animals and as such kennels are traditionally associated with its spread and hence give rise to its common name of kennel cough.

The signs which are seen are a characteristic cough which is described as dry hacking in nature, a raised temperature and the dog being quite low in its overall demeanour. During the first week it is considered to be infectious to other dogs, especially those which are unvaccinated. In older, the very young and sick animals it can result in a more pronounced signs.

Consequently most kennels have started to request dogs are vaccinated prior to being boarded to reduce the possibility of its spread. This vaccine is against the main bacterial component of kennel cough in the UK, called Bordetella Bronchiseptica. It is given by a few drops of liquid into the dogs’ nostrils and will provide a local immunity within 5 days and last approximately 12 months. If your dog is entering kennels or likely to be going to areas where there are a lot of dogs present then it may be wise to vaccinate or at least speak to your vet.
