Life is SO good now...

I would never have believed I could do it ...Until I went along to Rosemary Conley Food and Fitness

classes and saw how motivational and supportive the group leader was. She explained how easy the portion pots are to use ...No weighing food...what a relief... I was encouraged to do a little exercise (optional) even though I was so unfit, I enjoyed the music. I knew from being a nurse that exercise was the way to succeed but at 21 ½ stone I did not think I could do it, but it was not as bad as I thought, in fact, I felt it really did me good.

I had got to the stage where I was very miserable, my confidence was zero... I cringe when I remember at a work ‘do’ I overheard someone say "Get to the buffet quick before Nicky, as there will be nothing left."

I was desperate to do something. I had tried most slimming clubs and lost weight but then regained it. I just did not think I would ever be slim. I was so ashamed of my size. My works ‘scrubs’ had to be especially made because even the XXL would not fit. I used to be a size 32 but the dress you can see me in is a size 10!!

I encourage anyone who wants to lose weight to come along, you will not look back, I lost 6 lb in my first week and had lost a stone in just over the month...MAKE that first call.

Before joining I was waiting for a knee operation and had severe back pain. Amazingly now I do not have back pain or any knee trouble: I did not need an operation I simply needed to lose weight.

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION SUDBURY & DISTRICT BRANCH The 100th anniversary of the first shot fired in WW1 which was on 4th August 1914. The weekend of 2nd and 3rd August will be commemorating the 100 years and to this end there will be a Service of Commemoration on Sunday 3rd August at both St Andrews Church Gt Cornard at 10am and at St Gregory’s Church Sudbury at 3pm The Sudbury Service will be a Civic Service and we are reminded to be seated by 2.45pm to allow for the entry of the Mayor and Councillors. Both Services will be followed by Wreath Laying at the British Memorials.

To commemorate the centenary of the First World War there will be a display in Sudbury Library from 28th July - 9th August arranged by two of our members Shirley Smith and Alan Brockbank. The display will give an insight into the impact of the war on Sudbury and about some of the men who lost their lives. The book ‘No Glorious Dead, the impact of war on Sudbury, a Suffolk Market Town’ written

by Valerie Herbert and Shirley Smith is available from Sudbury Tourist Information Centre and Kestral Bookshop priced £9.95, all proceeds to Sudbury Royal British Legion and Sudbury Heritage Museum.

PARTY IN THE PARK Sunday 20th July starting at 11am at Belle Vue Park, Sudbury This free all day event, now in its sixth year, is run by the Town Council and aims to raise the profile of the diverse range of clubs and groups in and around the town.

Thousands of people are expected to attend this year’s event, which will see displays from several local groups including martial arts, dance, keep fit, exercise routines, a children’s entertainer and BMX riders. Out of the main arena there will be a range of activities including circus workshops, football skills, music drop-in sessions, trampolines, tennis and hockey coaching, rugby skills, bungee runs, Punch and Judy shows and bouncy castles.

By Ardmore Veterinary Group A VERY common hormonal disease seen in middle aged to older cats is hyperthyroidism.

The disease is caused by an increase production and release of hormone from a benign tumour in the thyroid gland. This gland is located by the windpipe at the base of the neck.

Thyroid hormone controls the cat’s rate of metabolism, when it is in excess the body will go into ‘overdrive’ and left untreated it would eventually be fatal. The first indication anything is wrong is the cat has an increase in appetite, but is still losing weight and has a very poor hair coat. Other signs, which may become obvious, are hyperactivity and restlessness, an increased heart rate with an abnormal rhythm, more frequent drinking, urination and vomiting.

If some or all of these changes are apparent I would suggest getting the cat assessed by your vet. To confirm hyperthyroidism a full examination followed by a blood test is usually performed to rule out other diseases and also to measure the thyroid hormone levels.

Once diagnosed there are three approaches to treatment. The first are anti thyroid drugs, in the form of tablets, usually given twice daily to block the production of the hormone. These will be required for the rest of the cat’s life. The second treatment is to surgically remove the abnormal gland. This will remove the benign tumour producing the excessive amounts of hormone and therefore often cure the problem, but a general anaesthetic and surgery will need to be performed. The third treatment is radioactive iodine. This is performed at specialist centres, due to the care required and the management of radioactive material and waste. Obviously your vet will discuss and help you decide on the most appropriate course of action for each individual case.
