Cards for Good Causes – which sells charity cards across the UK every year opens its Sudbury shop from 2nd October to 18th December. The shop, staffed by local volunteers, is open Monday to Saturday from 9.30am until 4pm in Sudbury Library.

Shoppers can buy cards from more than 30 charities including: Alzheimer’s Society, Breakthrough Breast Cancer, East Anglian Air Ambulance, St Nicholas Hospice and Suffolk Wildlife, giving customers a varied choice of designs and the ability to help the charity of their choice.

LAVENHAM CHRISTMAS FAIR Fri 5th, Sat 6th & Sun 7th December Light up your Christmas early this year by coming along to the Lavenham Christmas Fair for a festive extravaganza of entertainment, exhibitions, shopping and wining and dining. The fun starts at 6pm on Friday with the traditional Lighting Up Lavenham ceremony in the Market Place, when Father Christmas arrives in his sleigh and the whole village is instantly lit up with thousands of twinkling white lights.

It’s also the signal for serious shopping to begin : there will be more than 80 craft and food stalls over the whole weekend, selling a huge variety of gifts and locally-sourced food and drink. The fair will be open for late-night shopping on Friday until 8.30pm, Saturday from 11am to 5pm and Sunday from 11am to 4pm Last year was a huge success for the stalls and all the shops and galleries in the village and this year the fair will be even bigger with more fun events for children, including donkey sleigh rides, a bouncy castle, vintage fairground rides and Father Christmas himself in his grotto. There will also be a craft fair in the village hall, an exhibition in the Little Hall museum, a guided Lantern Walk of the village on Saturday at 4.30pm, a choir singing carols in the Market Place at 1pm on Saturday and a carol service in the village hall on Sunday.

Our lovely medieval village is a wonderful place to shop and stroll and sight-see at Christmastime. Especially if you dress up Dickensian-style! Last year the village was full of people wearing Victorian fancy dress and it really added to the fun of the fair. So come along, join us again in Christmas Dickensian spirit! There will be a prize for best costume.

A lot of new stalls, different ones each day, will be at the fair this year, with a mouth-watering array of food and drinks and a wide variety of craft stalls. You will be able to tuck into a variety of local and French food and drink and mulled wine as you stroll around and -- take note! -- all the stalls will be under marquees whatever the weather!

EXHIBITIONS AT GAINSBOROUGH’S HOUSE

Tel: 01787 372958 www.gainsborough.org 7 June 2014 to 11 January 2015 KARL FRIEDRICH ABEL In Gainsborough’s age, Karl Friedrich Abel was one of the most important musicians in London. He is best remembered as a practitioner of and composer for the viola da gamba (a bowed instrument similar to a cello). He was such a talented performer that after his death in 1787 The Morning Post reflected that the viola da gamba would ‘probably die with him.’

Through portraits, drawings and caricatures, this exhibition explores the life and career of Abel and his relationship with Thomas Gainsborough Open Monday to Saturday 10am-5pm, Sunday 11am-5pm The visitor entrance to the museum is on Weavers Lane and leads into the Gift Shop and Coffee Shop.

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION SUDBURY & DISTRICT BRANCH Remembrance Sunday 9th November Two Remembrance Services are being arranged by the Branch.

St Andrews Church Great Cornard 10.15am start. A Parade will form up opposite the Kings Head in Bures Road to leave at 9.50am to March along Bures Road take the Salute at the Old Post Office and into the Church. Following the Service inside Church the congregation will gather around the War Memorial and Wreaths will be laid after Last Post is played at 11am. The Parade will then form up to travel back to the Stephenson Centre for refreshments courtesy of Gt Cornard Parish Council.

The Service at St Gregory’s Church Sudbury will start at 2.30pm. The Parade will form up on the North side of the Market Hill to leave at 2pm and be led by The Colchester Pipes and Drums to travel down Gainsborough Street into Gregory Street and on to the Church.

After the Service Wreaths will be laid on both the British and American Memorials.

The Parade will then form up to march along Croft Rd into New Street, North Street and back to the Market Hill. The Salute will be taken outside the Town Hall by the Mayor and our Branch President.

After the dismissal of the Parade Teas will be served in the Town Hall.

TUESDAY 11TH NOVEMBER 2014 Two Minutes Silence will be observed outside the Town Hall Sudbury joined by the Mayor with Prayers led by Rev Canon Gregory Webb. We welcome everyone who wishes to join us and pay their Respects.

Pet advice KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE THIS FIREWORK SEASON

By Ardmore Veterinary Group WITH FIREWORKS season fast approaching, and the time for fireworks being much longer than simply November 5th, amongst all the fuss and frolics care must be taken to ensure our pets are safe and sound. Veterinary surgeries throughout the UK see an increasing number of pets requiring medications to calm them during this stressful time and for injuries resulting from fireworks. Because animals have such an acute sense of hearing, loud bangs and whistles are not just frightening but can even be painful to their ears. Therefore the general advice below can help to keep your pets stress free and safe during fireworks.

• Always keep dogs and cats inside when fireworks are being let off.

• Keep doors and windows locked to prevent pets escaping and to keep any noise to a minimum.

• Drawing curtains and putting the TV/radio on –can help to drown out the unfamiliar noise of fireworks.

• Never take your dog to a firework display.

• Always make sure your pet is wearing some form of identification so that if they run away they can easily be returned to you.

• Rabbits/guinea pigs/birds etc should be brought inside to a quiet room or to a garage/ shed, and their hutches or aviaries covered with blankets to block out some noise and bright lights, but ensure there is adequate ventilation.

In addition there are a variety of treatments available for this stressful period that can be helpful, and it is worth talking to your vet about these for both this year and future events. So please have a wonderful fireworks night, but please don’t forget your pets.
