members, and students from Doherty and Lotspeich to identify some of the best and most beloved aspects of each division. Teachers and administrators traveled far and wide on visits to peer schools, learning about innovative programming and building design. We partnered with our architects and builders to expand the Taft Early Childhood Center and to design the new Doherty Lotspeich Lower School. Situated at the green north end of the Hillsdale Campus, this state-of-the-art building will be the centerpiece of a Lower School "campus within a campus." A major goal throughout this past year was to engage the whole community, making sure that our planning processes involved all of our constituents in genuine and rewarding ways.

Over the course of the year, the Board and administration developed a plan that will direct our work for the next five years: "Strategic Plan 2025-2030: Heart, Mind, Community." This new plan focuses on four key priorities:

3. Deepen our Sense of Community
4. Foster Student Well-being, Engagement, and Fulfillment
With its focus on culture, community, and the student experience, I believe this plan speaks to our moment in history as a school and as a country. Now more than ever, we need to focus on our mission of engaging hearts and minds. Each of the plan's four priorities will challenge and inspire us to deliver an educational experience that lasts a lifetime and that shapes young people into adults who are prepared to live meaningful lives in a rapidly changing world.
ACADEMIC RECOGNITIONS AND COLLEGE ADMISSIONS
Our college counseling program engages students in identifying colleges and universities that will be a great fit for their interests and aspirations. We were thrilled with the institutions that the graduates of the Class of 2025 chose to attend; see the graphic on page 4 for a comprehensive list.
ATHLETICS, ARTS, AND EXTRACURRICULARS
A Seven Hills education extends beyond the classroom, with athletics, fine and performing arts, and extracurricular clubs and activities representing a vital part of our young people's formative experiences. This past year, we fielded 103 athletic teams, two teams and two individuals played in four state championships, staged plays and held concerts in every division, and engaged students in activities ranging from Lego Robotics to the Junior Classical League. Offering a wide array of enriching activities encourages each student to develop their unique capabilities.
On a personal note, I would like to say how much I enjoyed my first year as Head of School. Highlights of the role for me included spending time with our Lower Schoolers, reconnecting with many of my former students at alumni events, and working with the Board on important projects such as unification and our new strategic plan. I am grateful for everything that we accomplished this past year!
Best, Matt

LAIR KENNEDY Board Chair
Dear Seven Hills Families and Friends,
LAIR KENNEDY
The 2024-25 school year was a transformational one, as Seven Hills began a process of campus unification and adopted a new five-year strategic plan to chart our course going forward. As Board chair, I'm happy to report that the school is well-positioned to undertake this important work.
Strong Enrollment
Demand for a Seven Hills education remains very strong. We opened the 2024-25 school year with enrollment of 1,028 and a remarkably high retention rate of 95%. The school continues to be recognized as a premier college-preparatory, PK-12 program.
Strong Financial Position
Seven Hills continues to operate from a strong financial position, having no long-term debt, an endowment of $50 million, and ample cash reserves. The Board has continued to prioritize innovative educational programming and competitive faculty salaries, allowing us to attract and retain a superb faculty and to offer a life-changing academic program.
Campus
Unification Building Projects
The first of a series of campus unification building projects got underway last summer, as we broke ground on the addition to the Taft Early Childhood Center. Later this year, we will begin construction of the Doherty Lotspeich Lower School. The building will be set at the wooded north end of the Hillsdale Campus, on land that the Board acquired over the past 18 years.
The Sale of the Doherty Campus
Last spring, we announced the sale of the Doherty Campus to the Springer School and Center. Seven Hills teachers and students will remain at Doherty through the summer of 2027, after which they will move to the newly completed Doherty Lotspeich Lower School on the Hillsdale Campus. It was a priority of the Board to find a partner that would honor the legacy of the College Preparatory School and the Doherty Campus. I'm proud to say that with Springer, we found that partner.
Strategic Plan 2025-2030: Heart, Mind, Community
Our new strategic plan focuses on four priorities to guide the school's work over the next five years (see previous page for details). Thank you to Amy DeWitt and Angie Apple for co-chairing our strategic planning process and to the many members of the Board, the leadership team, and the school community who contributed to this plan.
Our Gratitude for Your Support
On behalf of the Board, I'd like to express our deep gratitude for everything you have done to support Seven Hills. You play an integral role as we live out the school’s mission of engaging hearts and minds.
Sincerely,
Lair Kennedy Chair, Board of Trustees

REIMAGINING
AT THE SEVEN HILLS SCHOOL
WE REIMAGINED WHAT IS POSSIBLE FOR SEVEN HILLS. THERE WERE NEW HEIGHTS IN ACADEMICS, ARTS, AND ATHLETICS, WITH NUMEROUS AWARDS, STELLAR PERFORMANCES, AND STATE CHAMPIONSHIP APPEARANCES.
For the Seven Hills Class of 2025, they have opened themselves up to a wide range of possibilities as their academic futures have taken them to 57 incredible colleges and universities throughout the country and around the world, where opportunities for growth and achievement are endless.
To better serve the needs of the students still on campus, Seven Hills teachers shared a dedication to continuously developing their lessons and methods based on new research and best practices. They incorporated immersive and intensive learning through field trips, May Terms, robotics, and real-world applications.
As the unification process began, the Seven Hills community was hard at work reimagining the Hillsdale Campus. A new location was selected and a name was given to the new Lower School, creating a campus within a campus for generations of future Lower School students.
In addition to physical changes, students, parents, teachers, administrators, architects and nature experts conducted research and shared ideas on innovative classroom designs, the best use for common spaces, and outdoor learning opportunities taking advantage of our green spaces.
Our community balanced new technologies with the arts and
169 DAYS FORTHE2024-25 SCH O O L Y EAR, WE WEREGIVEN 2024-25
incorporated moments of togetherness for students to unwind and be mindful in their school environments through hygge in the library and 7Hills Unplugged.
Students strengthened their sense of community, bonding across divisions and grade levels through Hives, joint Arts Alive performances, Beekeepers, the Locks for Leonard Hair Fair, and so much more.
We refocused our Portrait of a Learner around the mind, heart, and community for each and every student who becomes a part of Seven Hills. We identified the qualities and values we strive to foster in students not just by the end of their journey, but at every step and milestone.
As the events and accomplishments unfolded throughout the 169 days of the 2024-25 school year, all members of our community encouraged and supported each other and celebrated our strength and friendship as we reimagined what possibilities the future will hold.
In the stories found throughout the Annual Report, we invite you to reflect with us and reminisce on some of the highlights of the transformative and exploratory 2024-25 school year.
Financial Report 2024-25
The Business Office of The Seven Hills School is responsible for the preparation, integrity, and fair presentation of the financial statements and other accounting information in this annual report.
The school maintains a system of internal controls over financial reporting, which are designed to provide assurance to the school’s management and Board of Trustees that assets are protected and that transactions and events are recorded properly in the financial statements.
The Board of Trustees, through the Finance Committee, comprised of trustees not employed by the school, has adopted an Audit Subcommittee whose duties include engaging an independent accounting firm, Mellott & Mellott, P.L.L., to ensure that the financial statements are accurately presented.
The school has again maintained a balanced budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025. In the strategic effort to maintain the affordability of the school, the administration, faculty, and staff continue to find ways to reduce costs while persisting to prioritize teaching and learning.
School-wide operating efficiencies have been gained by increasing energy conservation, pruning unnecessary administrative positions, rethinking studentfaculty ratios, and removing under-enrolled programs.
The overall financial health of the school was again aided by the growth of the endowment, which provides funding for teacher salaries, financial aid, faculty professional development, and distinctive programming and technology.
Both annual giving and capital gifts enrich every part of the school. Most importantly, these gifts bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of educating each child.

Financial Report
The Seven Hills School points with pride to the latest endowment report that places our invested assets of $50 million. The infusion of new gifts, combined with professional portfolio management and thoughtful leadership by the school’s Investment Committee, chaired in 2024-25 by Nolan Bean, continues to produce desirable returns.

REIMAGINING .
REIMAGINING
AT SEVEN HILLS, OUR EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY DRIVES EVERYTHING WE DO . AS STUDENTS CONTINUE TO GROW UP IN A RAPIDLY CHANGING WORLD, OUR COMMITMENT TO DELIVERING THE HIGHEST QUALITY EDUCATION REQUIRES US TO REIMAGINE HOW TO BEST REACH STUDENTS.
SEVEN HILLS TEACHERS SHARE A DEDICATION TO CONTINUOUSLY DEVELOPING THEIR LESSONS AND METHODS BASED ON EVIDENCE-BASED RESEARCH AND BEST PRACTICES. THE RESULT IS AN INTENTIONAL, FUTURE-FOCUSED CURRICULUM THAT HELPS STUDENTS BECOME SKILLED PROBLEM SOLVERS, EMPATHETIC LEADERS, AND COMPASSIONATE HUMAN BEINGS
EDUCATION ON THE GO
Given our emphasis on helping our students become responsible global citizens, there are numerous opportunities throughout the year for students to gain hands-on experience through field trips.
Upper Schoolers Travel to Paris
In May, French teachers Meghan Stevens and Michele Laude traveled with 18 Upper Schoolers to Bondues to expand their knowledge of the French language.
While in France, the Upper Schoolers spent time at Institution De La Croix Blanche to learn about the school and visited Lille, Paris, the Cathedral de La Treille, and Arras. The students also learned about everyday life in France and practiced their language skills in practical applications, from taking public transit to buying a patisserie in a boulangerie in Paris.
Seventh Graders Tour Washington, D.C.
Seventh graders journeyed to Washington, D.C., for an in-depth look at our nation’s capital.
Students visited monuments and memorials and discussed
the history and meaning behind each one.
This year, students witnessed the House of Representatives in session and watched in real time how representatives debate bills before voting.
“Aside from the curricular relevance and importance that this trip offers, the chance for students to be away from school and experience, together, a place like Washington, D.C., serves to create memories that will last a lifetime,” former Head of Middle School Bill Waskowitz said.
Lotspeich Fourth Graders Visit Camp Kern
In April, fourth graders in Sara Snyder and Shane Marsan’s classes continued the Seven Hills tradition of an annual trip to Camp Kern. Students spent two days and one night learning about Ohio history through hands-on experiences. Students visited Fort Ancient, searched for fossils, tried archery, and participated in team-building activities.
“Lotspeich fourth graders have been going to Camp Kern for over 40 years,” Snyder said. “Our trip not only enhances the social studies curriculum but also allows an opportunity for social growth and a new way to connect with their fourth grade community. The trip reinforces the Ohio history curriculum outside of the traditional classroom in a hands-on way.”
Unit III Journey to Glen Helen
Doherty Unit III students explored Glen Helen’s 1,000-acre nature preserve in Yellow Springs, Ohio. With the help of naturalists and their Doherty teachers, students enjoyed themed hikes, up-close animal encounters, outdoor games, and classic campfire fun — complete with songs and skits.

IMMERSIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCES
At Seven Hills, we believe that our students learn best when they work in an atmosphere of open inquiry and mutual respect.
May Term Intensive Program
The May Term Intensive Program is innovatively designed to provide students with an immersive learning experience. Taking place during the five school days after Upper School final exams, this program offers an exciting departure from the traditional classroom setting. It allows teachers to become creators of specialized courses, tailored to their expertise and passions, and students to
pursue their interests and enroll in these intensive courses for a week of deep exploration and skill development.
During the five days, Upper School students visited historic Cincinnati landmarks, learned how to build their own furniture, explored different cooking techniques from around the world, tinkered with combustion engines, traveled to Broadway, and studied animal behavior, to name a few of the adventures.
Mini May Terms
Inspired by the Upper School’s May Terms, the Early Childhood Center held mini-May Terms for pre-kindergarten students during a morning in May. The young learners participated in numerous stations that provided opportunities for them to try new things. From Lego STEM activities to helping make and frost cupcakes to a nature scavenger hunt, students enjoyed the chance to explore their interests in immersive ways.
ENGINEERING A FUTUREFOCUSED EDUCATION
At the beginning of each school year, the Lower School robotics teams learn the scientific and real-world challenges they’re charged with researching for the FIRST Lego League Challenge competitions. FIRST Lego League Challenge is an international robotics competition, specifically designed for Lower and Middle School students, that presents an annual challenge for teams to research, design, and program Lego Education robots to complete tasks.
During the Seven Hills FIRST Lego League official qualifier in January, the Stinger Robotics Blue and Yellow Teams showcased their robotics skills.
The Stinger Robotics Blue Team, also known as The Amazing Axolotls, won the Robot Design award. The Stinger Robotics Yellow Team, also known as The Flying PencilZ, won the Innovation Project award.
The Upper School robotics team, called 7 Hills Robotics, continued the winning streak when they won the INSPIRE Award, the most prestigious award given to the best team that represents the FIRST Tech Challenge’s spirit, strong engineering skills, excellent teamwork, community outreach, and gracious professionalism. FIRST Tech Challenge, like FIRST Lego League Challenge, is an international robotics competition, but for ages 12-18. Students are tasked with learning how to code autonomous commands and steering their classroomscale robots in two-on-two matches.

REIMAGINING
REIMAGINING
“I’m so proud of the students who have worked hard in our scrappy start-up team, and have qualified in just our second season,” said coach and computer science teacher Marcus Twyford.
The team also competed at the state tournament. In only its second year, the Seven Hills team was among the top three at the regional event to qualify for State.
SEISMIC SCIENCE AND REALWORLD APPLICATIONS
In a powerful example of real-world learning, seventh graders in Kristin Suer’s science class combined creativity with engineering as they designed earthquake-resistant mini-towers — carefully balancing budgets, materials, and seismic science in a hands-on challenge.
Using a variety of materials they could “purchase” with a set budget, students worked in teams to create cost-effective structures designed to withstand simulated earthquakes.
After presenting their designs, students strapped their towers to a shake table, where Suer and a student volunteer recreated the three types of seismic waves — primary, secondary, and surface — to test each structure’s resilience.
To deepen the learning, Suer led the class in analyzing why certain towers performed better than others, discussing everything from column placement to material choice, and offering insight into the complex considerations real architects must navigate when designing earthquake-proof buildings.
Across every grade level and subject, Seven Hills students are immersed in experiences that bring learning to life. Whether they’re exploring seismic science in the classroom, building robots to tackle real-world environmental issues, or practicing language skills on the streets of Paris, students are empowered to think critically, collaborate meaningfully, and connect their learning to the world around them. These dynamic, hands-on opportunities reflect our belief that education should not only prepare students for the future — it should inspire them to shape it.

REIMAGINING
REIMAGINING 169 DAYS
THE 2024-25 SCHOOL YEAR BEGAN THE THREE-YEAR UNIFICATION PROCESS THAT WILL TRANSFORM SEVEN HILLS INTO ONE SCHOOL AND ONE COMMUNITY ON ONE CAMPUS. WHILE THE DOHERTY CAMPUS WILL CONTINUE ON AS PART OF THE SPRINGER SCHOOL AND CENTER, THE SEVEN HILLS COMMUNITY, ALONG WITH ARCHITECTS AND NATURE EXPERTS, HAVE BEEN HARD AT WORK REIMAGINING THE HILLSDALE CAMPUS.
REIMAGINING OUR BUILDING POSSIBILITIES
Ground broke on the Taft Early Childhood Center addition in June 2025. Construction will not impede instruction during the school year.
“The Early Childhood Center was built so that an addition could be seamlessly added to it later,” Head of School Matt Bolton said. “It has been exactly 10 years, and I am grateful for the foresight of the Board of Trustees to realize we might want to expand onto the building without having to shutter it for a year.”
Construction for the expansion is estimated to take a year, with the heaviest construction conducted during the summer, allowing Early Childhood students to remain in the building during the 2025-26 school year.
Remaining in their school buildings for the 2025-26 school year is now also a reality for the Lower School students as well.
Originally planned to sit on the site of the current Lotspeich Lower School and former Briggs Administration buildings, the new Lower School building — called the Doherty Lotspeich Lower School — will now be built
on the green and wooded north end of campus to create a “community within a community,” set against the backdrop of a grove of 300-year-old oak trees.
Bolton again expressed his gratitude to previous members of the Board of Trustees and school administration for working to acquire the land at the north end of campus to create the location for the new Lower School.
“The Lower Schoolers and the Early Childhood students will have a part of campus that feels uniquely built for them and their development stage,” Bolton said. “It gives them a lot of space and integrates nicely with the outdoors and gives them easy access to green space.”
REIMAGINING OUR CAMPUS’ GREEN SPACE
Utilizing green space has been top of mind throughout the unification process.
On a chilly Friday afternoon in December, Bolton and more than 20 faculty and staff members went on a nature walk around the Hillsdale Campus with representatives from the Cincinnati Nature Center.
“We have a really wonderful campus that offers us a lot of natural amenities, from the cross country course to the Duck Creek watershed, and we are looking to meaningfully incorporate these aspects into an educational context,” Bolton said.

REIMAGINING
Teachers shared how they currently use the campus’ green space and brainstormed ideas with Cincinnati Nature Center’s school program manager Melissa Sabo and nature areas project coordinator Carolyn Ramseur about ways the green space could be used and improved.
“We want to think about how we can be deliberate about the design of the new Lower School so that we surround it with green spaces, play spaces, and gardens and all of the things that might ground it in the outdoors,” Bolton said.
Science teachers from across divisions discussed how they would use the spaces and shared projects they have done in the past. Upper School environmental science students have conducted water testing
and Middle School science students have searched for fossils in the Duck Creek watershed.
REIMAGINING OUR CLASSROOM DESIGNS
For more than six months, the visioning groups, a think tank of teachers, students, parents, and administrators, participated in visioning meetings, constructed 3D models of classrooms, and discussed the latest in classroom design with architects from SHP, who are overseeing the Early Childhood Center expansion, construction of the Doherty Lotspeich Lower School, and renovations to Founders Hall and the Hillsdale Commons.
Head of Lotspeich Susan Miller and Head of Doherty Tracy Murch attended many of the sessions and were particularly impressed by the Lower School students, who designed their ideal classrooms, with a mixture of imagination and thoughtfulness, and presented them to the architects.
“Too often, we overlook the wisdom of children yet their years of classroom experience give them valuable insight into what truly supports their learning,” Miller said.
As part of the Upper School’s Experiential Learning program, Upper Schoolers with an interest in architecture and interior design assisted the Lower Schoolers during the sessions, in addition to working directly with the architects and attending sessions with teachers.

169 DAYS
REIMAGINING
Teachers and administrators took part in the learning process as well through site visits and tours of peer schools throughout the country, taking note of natural lighting, classroom furniture, and purpose built spaces for group work and private reading.
REIMAGINING OUR CAMPUS’ COMMON SPACES
The new location of the Doherty Lotspeich Lower School provides enough space to include a dedicated Lower School cafeteria, creating a more comprehensive experience for Lower School students.
The change will allow Founders Hall and the Hillsdale Commons to be renovated, allowing them to better accommodate the Middle and Upper School students.
Founders Hall will be transformed with updated culinary equipment allowing for a wider variety of options and an expanded seating area for students. The renovation will create a student center on campus and open
up the Hillsdale Commons to a new use — a weight and fitness room for the students.
With its close proximity to Kalnow Gym, the Commons’ light-filled space will become a centralized facility with exercise equipment, weights, and machines for our students and student athletes.
The unification process has created a wonderful opportunity for all members of the community to think outside the box about their indoor and outdoor surroundings, the best ways to learn, and how to be a strong and unified Seven Hills community.

Parents of Alumni Donors
The generosity of the parents of our alumni fills SevenHills with gratitude. Their ongoing support beyond their children’s graduation stands as a powerful testament to their confidence in, and the lasting value of, the Seven Hills experience. We take immense pride in recognizing and thanking these devoted parents for their loyalty and philanthropy to the Annual Fund.

169 DAYS REIMAGINING
ONE OF SEVEN HILLS’ SEVEN VALUES IS OUR COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY . THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, WE PRESENT STUDENTS WITH A MYRIAD OF OPPORTUNITIES TO UPHOLD THIS COMMITMENT, WHETHER IT’S THROUGH SERVICE, BUILDING CONNECTIONS ACROSS DIVISIONS, OR SPENDING TIME WITH PEERS.
REIMAGINING
CARING FOR THE LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY
In the Middle School, two of the largest service initiatives during the 2024-25 school year were the annual Walk-a-Thon and the resurgence of the Locks for Leonard Hair Fair.
Over the course of several weeks, sixth through eighth graders walked thousands of laps around the upper field track and collectively raised $25,856.06 during this year’s Walk-a-Thon. The five year total amounts to $115,291.42.
Students donated the funds to The Caring Place, a local organization that provides services to Cincinnati neighborhoods, and Leja Bulela, a nonprofit that provides humanitarian relief to people in the KasaiOriental Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In October, the Middle School kicked off Locks for Leonard with a raffle, allowing one lucky student, then eighth grader Zoya Samawi, to cut PE teacher Hannah Hanley’s two-year hair growth during an assembly.
The Hair Fair honors the memory of former Middle School PE teacher Ms. Leonard, who passed away from cancer. Hair donations collected from the Locks for Leonard Hair Fair were donated to organizations that create wigs for children undergoing cancer treatment or suffering from autoimmune diseases.
The Middle School collected donations until May 1, and a total of 16 members of the Seven Hills community donated their hair. Participants included Middle School students, faculty and staff, and a Middle School parent.
FACILITATING COMMUNITY ACROSS GRADE LEVELS
At the beginning of the 2024-25 school year, Lotspeich and Doherty students gathered to meet their new Hive members.
The Hives are multi-age buddy groups with students in kindergarten through fifth grade, each with their own name and color. Through monthly get-togethers, students built friendships across grade levels, fostered a sense of belonging and identity in their school community, and worked on community service projects together.
At the Doherty welcoming ceremony, kindergartners were sorted into Hives, given a bandanna of their Hive color, and celebrated with a confetti cannon.
“It’s truly a great introduction to their group,” said Head of Doherty Tracy Murch.
“We see how excited the students are to join their Hives, and the energy is contagious. They keep that level of passion for their Hive members and their community service project consistently throughout the year.”
In addition to the community service project, the 10 Doherty Hives worked on activities at assemblies and competed against the other Hives on Olympic Day in the spring.
While Hives have been at Doherty for three years, Lotspeich introduced Hives during the 2024-25 school year. The Lotspeich Hives followed a similar pattern, with the exception of including pre-kindergarten students in Lotspeich’s 12 Hives. Kindergarten through fifth grade students were assigned a Hive Home for their time throughout Lotspeich. Monthly Hive gatherings included various

games and activities that strengthened their sense of community, identity, and belonging around the Seven Hills values.
Pre-kindergartners were accompanied by their pre-kindergarten teacher or teacher assistant in their Hive to provide extra support to them as needed.
“Our Honeybees in pre-kindergarten also participated in Hives,” Assistant Head of Lotspeich Danielle Necessary said. “Each pre-kindergarten class was split into two groups, each student group joining a Hive along with a trusted adult. This allowed pre-kindergarten students to participate with the flexibility, consistency, and trusted support appropriate for that age group.”
FOSTERING COMMUNITY BETWEEN NEW AND RETURNING STUDENTS
Creating a sense of community and belonging is also at the heart of the Upper School’s Beekeepers.
The Beekeepers are 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students who volunteer to be the
first point of contact for incoming ninth graders and Upper School students new to Seven Hills.
“We want it to be a transition program and a mentorship program for students,” Upper School counselor Christine Stier said. “We’re trying to help students feel plugged into Seven Hills immediately and keep that sense of belonging throughout the years they’re here. Everything about the program is very intentional and purposeful to achieve that goal.”
The program officially began at the beginning of the 2023-24 school year during orientation. Beekeepers benefit from the program by being able to
meet freshmen they otherwise wouldn't have met before.
“It goes beyond their group, and they socialize outside of the structured time, such as attending one another's sports events, having a group chat, asking me to get lunch for the group, and more,” Stier said. “They also learn leadership skills and how to engage students. I hope students see themselves as part of the solution for helping others understand they belong at Seven Hills.”
BUILDING COMMUNITY OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL DAY
Building community beyond the school day is also part of the mission of 7Hills Unplugged, a free-play initiative on the

On Thursday afternoons, first through eighth grade students had the opportunity to participate in sports pickup games, gaga ball, board games on the deck; hang out on the hill; walk the cross country course; and more.
7Hills Unplugged is only one of the multiple ways students form communal bonds outside of the classroom. From an Upper School and Lower School joint performance, Lower School students providing designs for the new Lower School, or Upper School students leading
clinics with Lower School athletes, students were able to enjoy camaraderie with their peers.
PERFORMING TOGETHER AS A COMMUNITY
During Arts Alive, Upper School and Lower School students delighted their audience with the hilarious and heartwarming performance of “The Day,” a play written by rising senior Evie Horner when she was in fifth grade. The play was about a student recounting their misadventures and unfortunate experiences to their family.
“Collaborating with Lower School drama teacher Natalie Bird and her students was absolutely one of the highlights of the year for our Upper School theater students in the masterclass in theater course,” Upper School theater teacher Marc Raia said. “It gave the masterclass students an opportunity to teach the Lower School theater students, and we all benefited from that. The older students were mentoring the younger students, and it allowed us to build a bridge from Lower School theater to Middle School theatre to Upper School theater. It was a great opportunity to practice and experience the unification process right in the classroom, by encouraging our older students to nurture and guide our younger Seven Hills students.”
DESIGNING COMMUNITY SPACES
In special sessions with SHP, the architecture firm that Seven Hills has partnered with for our Early Childhood Center expansion and the new Lower School building, Doherty and Lotspeich students worked together to create their ideal classrooms. Working in multigrade groups, the young architects discussed reading nooks, the importance of natural light, and the possibility of class pets. After discussing their ideas, SHP provided materials for students to bring their visions to life via dioramas.
USING SPORTSMANSHIP TO GROW COMMUNITY
Celebrating and encouraging our young Stinger athletes is the highlight of our Youth Spirit Nights, where, throughout the year, Lower School athletes are

honored. Crowds cheered on the young Stingers as they ran through the tunnel of varsity athletes and cheerleaders between varsity games.
The varsity boys and girls soccer teams also helped foster the next generation of Stinger athletes by dipping their cleats into coaching with weekend clinics.
On Saturdays in September and early October, the varsity soccer players and their coaches hosted clinics, known as the Kindergarten Kickers, to teach basic skills to Seven Hills’ youngest athletes.
“The weekend clinics focused on soccer skills and aimed at introducing young students to the sport in a nurturing environment,” said Interim Athletic Director Brandon Williams.
The boys and girls teams split the duties of running the clinics. The varsity players coached the kindergartners through shooting, dribbling, and passing drills, and provided encouragement to give them a positive view of what playing a sport for Seven Hills can be like.
“It allowed the varsity athletes to step into leadership roles, gain coaching experience, and serve as role models for the younger students. The clinics help build community and encourage a passion for soccer across different age groups,” Williams said.
The weekend clinics grew out of the popular sports clinics held each year at
Homecoming, where the members of the varsity soccer, golf, volleyball, and cheerleading teams lead first through eighth graders in basic skills and beginner moves.
The concept of community is constantly evolving at Seven Hills in order to meet the needs and goals of our students. Throughout the many ways students experience community at Seven Hills, one thing remains constant: every opportunity is intentionally designed to engage the hearts and minds of our students.

169 DAYS REIMAGINING
AS PART OF THE SCHOOL-WIDE GOALS FOR THE 2024-25 ACADEMIC YEAR, SEVEN HILLS UNDERTOOK A COMPREHENSIVE REVISION OF WHAT WAS FORMERLY KNOWN AS THE PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE. THAT INITIATIVE EVOLVED INTO WHAT IS NOW CALLED THE PORTRAIT OF A LEARNER — A CHANGE THAT REFLECTS A BROADER AND MORE INCLUSIVE VISION FOR STUDENT GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT.
The basis for the Portrait of a Learner is Seven Hills’ mission: to engage students’ hearts and minds, support them in developing their unique capabilities, and prepare them to lead meaningful lives in a rapidly changing world.
Throughout the first semester, interdisciplinary teams of teachers and administrators from across all four school divisions — led by Division Heads — collaborated to rethink and redesign the portrait to ensure it reflects the school’s mission and educational philosophy. The goal was to create a document that speaks to the most essential aspirations the school holds for its students, both now and in the years ahead.
“This felt like one of the first important steps leading up to the new five-year strategic plan,” Head of School Matt Bolton said.
“We wanted the Portrait of a Learner to be more than just a document — it needed to be a guide for our work in classrooms and conversations across the school. It reflects not only who our students are today, but who they are becoming, and the values we believe will carry them forward into the world.”
The Portrait of a Learner is intended to serve as a guiding star for all members of the school community — teachers, coaches, administrators, and staff — as they design learning experiences that support and inspire students. It articulates the key values, skills,
and mindsets the school strives to cultivate in students at every stage of their educational journey — from early childhood through senior year, from pre-kindergarten to precalc. The portrait reflects a holistic view of student development, honoring growth from the first spark of curiosity to a fully realized sense of purpose and capability.
“I would love for students to be able to use this document for self-evaluation, helping them identify which areas they excel in and which areas they can strengthen,” Bolton said.
“We aligned three areas: the heart, mind, and community. This document is a portrait, but it can also be used as a mirror, aiding students in understanding where they are in relation to this idealistic vision.”
The revised portrait was designed to be concise, accessible, and actionable, so it can be meaningfully integrated into curriculum design, instructional planning, and broader school initiatives.
“Throughout this project, we used processes we encourage students to implement in their learning, such as collaboration, brainstorming, and revisions,” Bolton said. “Drafts and iterations were field tested with parents, students, and faculty, ensuring that a wide range of voices helped shape the final result. It was essential that the portrait captured our aspirations for academic and social programs, while authentically embodying who we are today. The widespread work from parents, teachers, and students is what enables this to work in the end.”
2024-25
REIMAGINING A PORTRAIT OF A LEARNER
The new Seven Hills Portrait of a Learner now stands as a shared vision of the qualities and values the school seeks to nurture in every student. It will serve as a compass for teaching, learning, and decision-making as the school continues to fulfill its mission of engaging hearts and minds and honoring each student’s distinct potential.

169 DAYS REIMAGINING
AT
SEVEN HILLS, WE’RE REIMAGINING A FUTURE WHERE STUDENTS GROW NOT ONLY IN CREATIVITY AND TECHNOLOGY BUT ALSO IN THE MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS THAT PREPARE THEM TO THRIVE IN A RAPIDLY CHANGING WORLD.
BUILDING LOCAL AND GLOBAL CONNECTIONS
Middle and Upper School librarians strengthened students' understanding that meaningful connection doesn’t require screens or devices by introducing the Danish tradition of hygge.
Hygge — pronounced hue-gah — is a feeling of warmth, coziness, and contentment found in life’s simple pleasures. For two days in January, students quietly gathered together between classes and during free periods to deepen friendships, journal their reflections, and complete small crafts. Blankets, journals, and warm beverages helped set the scene, encouraging students to relax and connect.
“I decided to run it because I've always liked the Danish concept of hygge, especially in Ohio when winters can be tough for folks,” Middle and Upper School head librarian Megan Whitt said. “I love the idea of making the most of the bad weather by getting together with friends and enjoying books, hot drinks, and cozy spaces. In short, I was just hoping to bring students and faculty some joy in the winter months, and I definitely plan on doing it again. The students loved it.”
By allowing students the opportunity to slow down, create with their hands, and share quiet time together, the library offered a thoughtful reminder of the joy found in unplugged, intentional experiences.
During Cultural Connections Week, Doherty students immersed themselves in the rich
history, traditions, and daily life of the Philippines — this year’s featured country.
Unit I students learned key facts and worked together to create jeepneys and a Philippine flag, while pre-kindergarten for 2-year-olds students practiced the traditional tinikling dance and visited their Unit I reading buddies during the jeepney activity. Unit I also welcomed special guests, student Clay Schaefer’s grandparents, who read books about Filipino culture and life.
Unit II students studied the colorful Pahiyas Festival and created vibrant houses decorated with symbols of fruits, vegetables, and kiping to celebrate the harvest tradition in Lucban, Quezon.
The week concluded with an assembly and a hallway tour, where students walked through beautifully decorated displays representing the diverse landscapes of the Philippines.
BALANCING ART, TECHNOLOGY, AND CREATIVITY
While Doherty students explored global traditions through hands-on experiences, Upper School art teachers Jason Knarr ’86 and Daniel Vance highlighted how technology can thoughtfully complement and enhance artistic expression.
“Within the arts, we’re always using technology,” Knarr said. “Whether it’s screen printing, logography, movable type, 3D printing, or something else, you can always rely on artists to gravitate towards exploring how they can use technology. Screen printing used to be looked down on when it first came around, and so was photography, just to name a couple of examples. Stone logography, which has been around for ages, is still a
REIMAGINING THE FUTURE
valuable skill to learn because of its versatility and low skill level.”
The iPad is a great resource, according to Vance, especially when it comes to drawing.
“Sometimes, I’ll have students take a photo of an object and then they trace the image,” Vance said. “They’re developing muscle memories that transfer when they draw on paper or a different medium.”
By blending traditional methods like screen printing with digital tools such as iPads, students learn to balance innovation and craftsmanship, developing foundational skills while exploring new creative possibilities.
During Lotspeich’s second grade Arcade Day, students apply design thinking from start to finish — designing, testing, and refining their arcade games while building collaboration and critical thinking skills. Through this low-tech, high-imagination experience, students discover that innovation can come from the simplest materials.
Leading up to the arcade’s opening day, students analyze the functions of arcade games, which ones people gravitate towards and which ones they prefer. After reviewing their findings, students work in groups to create their very own game.
“The students do an incredible job of working together and coming up with solutions whenever they hit a block,” Lotspeich’s Project Math teacher Jacquie Berting said. “They view one another as resources and teammates with this type of project. It’s incredible to see them grow as learners and as leaders when they discover a part of the unit that really resonates with them.”
A Seven Hills education enables students to explore the world without leaving the classroom, build connections that last a lifetime, and learn how to implement technology through artistic expression. These dynamic, hands-on opportunities reflect our belief that education should not only prepare students for the future — it should inspire them to reimagine it.
