Airs and Fanfares was written for a young orchestra and the orchestration can be varied as circumstances suggest. Less usual instruments (eg bass trombone, tuba) can simply be omitted, if need be; oboe 3 and bassoon 3 could also be omitted. The percussion can be adapted according to what is available: eg the tenor drum could be replaced by a conga or a tom-tom, and glockenspiel could take the xylophone part, or vice versa.
