Alan Hovhaness
Alan Hovhaness was born Alan Vaness Chakmakjian on 8 March 1911 in Somerville, Massachusetts, to an Armenian father and a mother of Scottish descent. He was one of the most prolific composers of the 20th century, with his official catalog comprising 434 opus numbers, including 67 numbered symphonies. Widely travelled, he incorporated stylistic influences from European, Asian and Polynesian traditions into his music, which has been performed by major organizations all over the world. Hovhaness was inducted into the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1951, and received honorary D. Mus. degrees from the University of Rochester, Bates College and the Boston Conservatory. He died in 2000, aged 89.
Alan Hovhaness wurde am 8. März 1911 als Alan Vaness Chakmakjian in Somerville, Massachusetts, geboren. Sein Vater stammte aus Armenien, seine Mutter hatte schottische Vorfahren. Mit einem Schaffenskatalog von 434 Werken mit Opuszahl – darunter 67 nummerierte Sinfonien – war er einer der produktivsten Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Inspiriert durch zahlreiche Reisen, verarbeitete er in seinem Schaffen stilistische Einflüsse aus europäischen, asiatischen und polynesischen Musiktraditionen. Seine Werke werden von führenden Künstlerinnen und Künstlern in aller Welt gespielt.
