This notation indicates a natural harmonic on an open string, with TWO “harmonic stops”.

Place the two fingers as notated on the indicated string. The resultant sounding pitch (ONE pitch) is given in bracket. All pitches like this are natural harmonics and have accordingly “natural pitch” based on the fundamental tone of the open string. Normally, a natural harmonic on the open string is fingered with just one harmonic stop, but with the two-stop-technique employed here it should be possible to reach quite high-numbered (especially the 7th) harmonics and bring out their special sound and their natural pitch. The natural 7th is about 1/6 tone lower than the “equally tempered” seventh.

It was the Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen who discovered and drew my attention to this new technique.

2) VIBRATO ETC. vibr. = normal vibrato s.v. = senza vibrato (without vibrato) grande vibrato = “exaggerated” large vibrato, almost ¼ tone pitch-changes

3) DIVISI / TUTTI unless clearly marked divisi (abbreviation: div.) the part must be played in unisono, with double stops as indicated.

4) SORD. / SENZA SORD. The sordini are used independently for various sections of the string orchestra – follow the instructions as indicated in the score.

Forord / Programnote Begrebet lysning omfatter (for mig) en tilblivelse, eller rettere tilsynekomst, set i forhold til en mørkere baggrund. Lysningen viser sig som en tilstand der afviger fra de(n) foregående ved at være – ja: lysere – hvad det så vil sige…

At jeg har valgt denne titel (efter at have komponeret værket, som altid) skyldes naturligvis min subjektive oplevelse af den musik jeg under kompositionsprocessen både læste og spillede mig igennem adskillige gange.

Det tydeligste, tidligere eksempel der kunne kaldes lysning (efter mit gehør) ville være Sibelius’ RAKASTAVA (for strygere, 2. sats), hvor der forekommer konstante vekslinger mellem lyst og dunkelt.

Vekslingerne i mit værk er ikke regelmæssige, men lader lysningerne (for der er flere) vise sig efter en foregående proces i et organisk (men af den grund ikke nødvendigvis gnidningsløst eller for den sags skyld smertefrit) forløb (måske som organisk netop ikke smertefrit?).
