Percussion Flute (doubling Piccolo)

Percussion • List of instruments : - 1 vibraphone (4 octaves) - Ossia : 1 vibraphone (3 octaves) - 1 set of crotales (1 octave, the hightest) notation : 1 octave lower - 1 high rotating cymbal, or else 1 small tam-tam (diameter approx. 30 cm) - 1 medium-low tam-tam (diameter approx. 65 cm) - 1 Thai gong : "B 4" (English notation) see bar 136, or else 1 cencerro, with the same pitch - 3 tom-toms (1 medium, 1 low and 1 contrabass) - 3 cymbales without stand. The diameter of each corresponds to the diameter of the 3 tom-toms. Do not place the cymbals upside-down. Place the edge of each cymbal on the skin of each tom. The cymbals should be chosen with regards to the diameter of each tom. - 1 pair of soft timpani sticks (for playing on the bass strings of the piano). • Vibraphone preparation a) From bars 183 to 191, the timbre of the vibraphone is modified in order to produce strange "sizzling" sounds (the normal sound of the vibraphone must become mysterious). b) In order to obtain these sounds, prepare two sufficiently solid strips of adhesive tape, on which will be stuck 26 1-Euro coins (or equivalent) corresponding to the 26 notes indicated in bar 146 : - Stick 10 coins to the first adhesive strip corresponding to the 10 altered notes of bar 146. Adjust their position whilst taking into account the spacing of the 10 altered vibraphone bars. - Do the same thing with the 16 remaining coins on the second adhesive strip, adjusting them to fit the 16 diatonic vibraphone notes of bar 146. c) Starting at bar 146, place each adhesive strip in such a way that the coins are in direct contact with the vibraphone bars.
Piano preparation 1 - For bars 97 to 104, a smallish coin (such as a 1-cent piece or something similar) should be woven through the 3 strings of the note E3 (English notation) at approximately 16 cm (for a medium grand piano) from the dampers to the tail of the piano. This coin should remain held in place by the 3 piano strings: the left and right strings underneath the coin, the middle string above. The sound of this note should be reminiscent of that of a mystic gong (with harmonics and a very beautiful timbre). 2 - At bar 176, prepare 35 or 46 large wooden pencils and place them just beyond the dampers, perpendicular to the strings, in such a way that the pencils, thusly arranged, cover all of the notes indicated in bar 176. In this way, from bar 183 to 191, the habitual timbre of the piano must disappear completely, the result being a continuous colored "sizzling".
A few words concerning "The Harmony of the Spheres" I borrowed the title from Pythagoras and Kepler. In my score, what interested me was not the theoretical aspect of their work, but rather the poetic and metaphorical aspect of their thoughts, turned toward the kinetics of the celestial bodies turning over on themselves, and the various geometric lines they draw in the universe. The work is written in 3 parts which are played one after the other, without a break. In the 1st and the 3rd part, I tried to preserve the idea of the three dimensions of space, by writing a purely instrumental work, and by creating true sonic perspectives, without making use of electroacoustic spatialization, or even the specific positioning of the musicians in the concert hall. The 1st part "Symmetries" develops the interlacing of multiple “ribbon figures” (in arabesque shape) split by various types of mirrors (flat, oblique or distorting). The evolution of these “ribbon figures” is controlled by a piece of software (3a-table) created in the context of work on OpenMusic at Ircam. The 2nd part "Malaise d'adolescent" is a musical parenthesis. It attempts to describe a nocturnal phenomenon, which has obsessed a part of my adolescence, by waking me brutally and by putting me in extreme fright. Here, everything is composed around a straight line which has no ending. Several jolts, as violent as they are brief, occasionally perturb the apparent calm of this section. The instrumentation (with certain specific sounds and layers of shadow…) complete the composition of this musical fresco. Finally "Quantic Movements" (3rd part) takes us to another universe, that of the infinitely small, where the universe was probably created. In this part, I tried to realize what Giacinto Scelsi had sought to develop in his music: "the sound is spherical and round". Turning independently on themselves, these "sounds", multiplied in a very large number, have been distribute onto 4 lines in shape of counterpoint. Each of these lines describing a trajectory which is unique to it and evolves in a sort of spatial canvas, beaded, demultiplied, and ends in the centre of a galaxy. Here, in this scorching nucleus, in the "black hole" the infinitely small and the infinitely vast join and merge.

At bar 176, prepare 5 or 6 large wooden pencils and place them just beyond the dampers, perpendicular to the strings, in such a way that the pencils, thusly arranged, cover all of the notes indicated in bar 176. In this way, from bar 183 to 191, the habitual timbre of the piano must disappear completely, the result being a continuous colored sizzling.
