Western Cape Naturist Association chairperson John Skene said the province has Sandy Bay, a nudist beach. “Thereisnoharminhavingadesignatednaturist beach. We provide for our own security,” he said. KwaXolo and KwaNzimakwe tribal councils spokesperson Thanda Ncane said people from the tribal councils are not in favour of their proposal. “They said no to it. HCM Head of Community Services Sibusiso Nzimande said that when they get applications of any kind, they first look at their bylaws, environmental impact and economic spin-offs. He said they know that there are unofficially designated nudist beaches in KZN. “We have one in Umhlanga Rocks and one in Trafalgar. We need to strengthen our enforcementofby-lawstodealwithunofficialdeclaration of these nudist beaches,” said Nzimande. PUBLIC debate heated up on Monday morning when residents of Trafalgar, KwaXolo and KwaNzimakwe made it clear to the National Naturist Association and Western Cape Naturist Association that they do not want the Mpenjati beach turned into a nudist one. “I walk around nude in my house. But when I look at myself in the mirror I think I look like those old naked people on the beach. Everything droops. I don’t want to look at drooping boobs and buttocks on our beach,” Trafalgar resident Reyna Joubert. AnHCMofficialsaidhewasawarethatsome people are already bathing naked at Trafalgar. Both nudist associations are of the opinion that overseastourists, whoarenaturists, would flock to the South Coast and that can have a lucrative effect on the area’s economy. The chairperson of the National Naturist Association, Athol Lutge, said France makes millions from naturist visitors and that once there is a nudist beach on the South Coast, those people will also visit the South Coast and grow its local economy. “TheEuropeanswillspendtheirEuroshere. Nudity promotes human health, sport, environmental health and nature conservation. Walking around naked is not what we do everyday. We don’t want to offend anyone. Mpenjati beach is already known as a naturist beach,” said Lutge. Another nudist, Amanda Sanna, said nudists are not abnormal or weird people with mental problems.

Residents from the area teamed up, pooled their resources and extinguished the fire by themselves. The fire occurred in the bushes behind Ilanga Caravan Park and Resort in Toucan Road at about 1.15pm. The resort owner, Nicky Fou-

Fourie’s husband and people living close to the bushy area acted immediately. “It we didn’t act, the fire would have got out of control, they came together with hosepipes. It took them an hour to douse the fire. SAPS also arrived a short while later and tried contacting Protection Services, but still,

Neighbours up in arms over trucks >> Residents worry about noise and pollution CANDYCE KRISHNA

VONGO residents, who have objected to a property being used as an industrial site in Peter Road, say that the Hibiscus Coast Municipality is not taking their objections seriously. Residents say that for two years they have been subjected to noise and pollution coming from the property owned by civil engineer, Siva Pillay. His property houses a number of trucks and heavy-duty equipment which residents claim is illegal because the area is zoned as agricultural/residential area. Howard Eades of Stephward Estate is neighbour to this property and says there are a number of reasons why he and other residents have ob-

The property on Peter Road which is being used as a light industrial sight, jected. “The Town Planning Board made an area across the national road into industrial usage for this reason. Those roads have been designed to

handle heavy industrial vehicles,” said Eades. He said his establishment, Stephward Estate, experiences noise from early in the morning until late when

Pillay’s vehicles enter and exit the property. “This impacts negatively on my business,” he said. He said indigenous wild-life like the whistling ducks have not bred for the past two years due to the noise. “Mr Pillay is succeeding in lowering the standard of our area and thus reducing the value of our properties.” In response, Pillay said he feels he is being unfairly targeted as there are other residents in the area who also parked trucks on their residential properties. “I am aware of the people who are complaining. If my application is rejected, I will find another property.” He said his application to rezone the property into light industrial is pending but was given permission by the municipality to park his vehicles on the site until a decision is reached. He added that the environmental affairs department had inspected his property numerous times and

The schedule includes a new return flight on a Saturday and a new return flight on a Monday. “We have increased the schedule in line with market expectations and Cemair’s commitment to the South Coast community,” said Miles van der Molen, CEO of CemAir. “The company is very pleased to be working closely with the Hibiscus Coast Municipality and will soon be announcing additional exciting developments.” Cemair first launched its scheduled flights to

Margate Airport less than a year ago on 1 November2013withtworeturnflightsaweekand has steadily increased this number to match customer enthusiasm for the service. The flights offer direct access to the KZN South Coast thereby eliminating the lengthy 160km drive to King Shaka Airport which is located in La Mercy, north of Durban. During the upcoming December holiday season, Cemair’s schedule will again be increased to two flights a day. This will accommodate the large number of holidaymakers expected to travel to the South Coast.

Alarmingly low blood stock levels TRADITIONALLY,themonthofSeptemberis a difficult time at the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) owing to preliminary exams and preparation towards the final quarter of the year, as a result blood drives at schools and universities are generally not possible at this time of year. This together with poor turnouts at company‘s and organisational blood drives has placed immense pressure on the blood stock levels. “SANBS needs to maintain a blood stock level of five days at all times by collecting 3000 units of blood per day to meet the demand of the thousands of patients who are reliant on blood transfusions for their survival. However at the moment we have only 1.6 days of blood stock available, and we are concerned that should this continue we are looking at a major crisis as we head towards the festive season,” said Sifiso Khoza, re-

gional marketing manager of SANBS. It is only with the help of the selfless blood donors that we are able to help this situation. PORT Shepstone man says his love for books and reading is what kept him going when he was homeless in the cold streets of Johannesburg as a result of an addiction to drugs. Dubbed the ‘pavement bookworm,’ Philani Dladla (25) says he moved to Johannesburg in 2008 and worked at different places as a waiter as well as with the Association for the Aged but because of his addiction he soon found himself roaming the streets as a homeless man. “I started doing drugs while I was still in Port Shepstone, but the addiction got worse when I arrived in Johannesburg.” Besides his two siblings and his mother he left back home, he had no other relatives in the big city to go to after he was kicked out of his apartment. “I almost had no possessions while I was on the streets but I never got rid of my books.” He said he carried them with him wherever he went. Dladla says he developed the love for books at a very young age and would be very happy when he received a book as a birthday gift. “Instead of begging from passing motorists

He read them first before selling them so he could provide a perfect synopsis. Other motorists and passers-by started noticing what he was doing and started donating and trading books with him, which made his business continue. As word of what he was doing spread, he says some of the self-help books he was selling helped him get over his addiction. The municipalities trained facilitators that will drive the community participation programmes ahead of the formulation of the Integrated Development Plans of municipalities (IDP). The trained people will go out and retrain their own communities in various local municipalities on how to craft their own community or ward plans for development and prioritisation with regards to service delivery. Ugu District Municipality spokesperson Sipho Khuzwayo said the municipality has seen a need to prioritise community involvement in drafting (IDP). “We want all wards of local municipalities to have their own ward plans which will inform the IDP of the municipality and help the municipalitytodelivertherequiredcommunityneeds. In this workshop we have invited community development workers, public participation practitioners, ward committee members and IDP managers,” said Khuzwayo. Linda Xulu of Ethekwini Municipality said community and ward based service delivery plan will help the community to give municipalities what they need. “Ward committees, the community leaders and stakeholders need to be trained on putting together their wards plan of needs so that they canbeintegratedintotheIDPofthemunicipality. When that happens, the public protests will be eliminated or ended,” said Xulu.

A community development worker Sithembiso Mzindle said the workshop has empowered them to train communities in forming their own ward plans of what they need to be addressedintheirareas.“Itisaveryfruitfuland beneficial workshop. We appreciate this initiative by the municipalities,” said Mzindle.

Retailer is the best AS a regular customer of Bargain Wholesalers, I wish to pledge my support for this business. I am a pensioner, on a static pension who thanks to the affordable prices of this wholesaler, can afford to purchase a few luxuries in addition to basic necessities. It is understandable that with alterations, construction there will be noise and some inconven-

Yet, when I committed the samemistakeinalocalsupermaket, it took me more than an hour for the money to be restored to me, after I indicated my error.

DespitethefactthatIspendon average less than R100 per visit, the management has always assisted me to obtain desired products. Thank you Bargain Wholesalers for not closing the doors during the construction process. I am eagerly anticipating the “re-opening” of the new, extended premises which promises to cater for all our needs. Dr L.J.Peltz Ramsgate

Reed dance is significant Whentheyweartheirtraditionalattire theylookbeautiful holding the reeds. I attended the reed dance as a young girl, and enjoyed the experience and the symbolic nature of the ceremony. At the same time, I am a thoroughly modern young lady, with my tertiary studies nearly completed, yet I will never deny the importance of tradition in a child's upbringing. Modern young women should carry on going to the reed dance and encourage other young women to wear the traditional attire and be proud of their culture there. Being proud of who you are is special because every human being is special. Dancing bare breasted for the king is something that young women do to show their

purity. The young women enjoy themselves at the reed dance because they have a passion and love what they are doing as young women. When the young women are dressed in their traditional attire they look delightful. The people of the Zulu nation are world famous for their impressive dancing and singing skills, the young women perform to the best of their ability and I think it’s magnificent of them to show they appreciate what they are doing. Being purified is one of the most amazing things you could ever wish for, as purification is the key to healthy and powerful living. Andile Sithole South Coast

I AM a big reader of classic science fiction authors such as Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clark, H.G. Wells and who could forget Edgar Rice Burroughs’s A Princess of Mars. These authors have all delved into Mars, the red planet closest to planet Earth. Arguably the most famous fictional work on Mars is Wille’s rendition of the Wells classic War of the Worlds book in a radio drama that scared the living daylights out of many Americans and Brits in the late 1930s. I recently had a discussion with my boss asking her if she would leave everything behind to go to Mars and colonise the planet. While not many people would agree to this, 705 lucky souls have been shortlisted for the Mars One project due to launch by 2025 bound for the red planet to establish a permanent human colony. “That stuff is for the adventurous type,” my boss said, to which I agreed. But then I wondered if I would go, but remembered that it is too late for me. Let’s hope we don’t have a ‘Hal’ accident on the way to Barsoom. John Carter

WITH a new year soon upon us, many parents have applied to schools of their choice in the hope of educating their children to secure their futures. Yet every year there are those who are faced with a letter of rejection. The autonomy of our schools is crucial. It is a large factor in the success of many of our schools. This includes the right to set their own admissionspolicy, amongothers.Butwhenthat autonomy is used to gatekeep or reserve space for certain types of pupils it becomes a problem. The law is very clear about schools denying access to a pupil based on discriminations set out in our Constitution. The National Education Act says specifically of admissions: “The admis sion policy of a public school and the adminis tration of admissions by an education depart ment must not unfairly discriminate in any way against an applicant for admission.” It is therefore disconcerting that some schoolsseemtoroutinelydenyadmissiontopu pils, who in some cases live less than a kilometer from the school to which they have applied, seemingly on the grounds of race, religion and other spurious claims. I am currently dealing with many frustrated parents who have been denied the ability to en rol their children into schools most convenient for them on such grounds. While, in these cases, there will be a followup with the Department of Education, it is worth reminding ourselves of the inherent advantages of diversity in our schools. Studies show that children brought up or schooled in diverse environments whether so cially, class, race or religious and others, display a far better understanding of the world. They are able with relative ease to navigate the many nuanced complexities of a society with a history such as ours.

It is therefore the duty of parents, school governing bodies and school authorities to actively strive to pro vide a holistic and diverse school environment for our pupils. Our country sorely needs more tolerance and em pathy towards one another. We will only be stronger once we are able to honestly say we understand each other. Schools, due to the ability and scope they have to shape young lives and instill values, are our nation's biggest hope in fostering a generation of citizens who will lead this country forward, united. GINISILE NDOVELA

>>news1@feveronline.co.za A YOUTH pastor from Merlewood, Ger ald High, has raised concerns about the terrible state of Merlewood Primary School’s facilities. High said both health and building inspectors were shocked at the state of the school when they visited recently.

“The roof is still untreated asbestos which is a real risk to the children and the toilets are not working,” said High. He said government departments have been promising to fix the school for a while but nothing has been done. KZN Department of Education spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa had not yet responded at the time of going to press.

HLABULUNGILE Primary School staff, in KwaBhokodisa outside Ramsgate, bought new school uniforms for 56 its needy pupils. School principal Vangeli Ngcungama said the school is currently being renovated and that at a stakeholders meeting a decision was taken to sell the old building material to the community so that the proceeds would be used to buy new uniforms for the pupils from poor families. School governing body chairperson Ngcane Mkhungo appreciated the co-operation between the school and the community, while thanking the principal for his idea. “The parents were firstly called for a meeting where they analysed the idea and agreed to support it. We appreciate the bond the school has with its community” said Mkhungo. The parents were present at the handover of the new uniforms to their children and witnessed the acceptance thereof by the children with smiles in their faces.

The South Coast brand JUSTIN MACKRORY: CEO SOUTH COAST TOURISM

R

EADERS may have noticed that our logo has changed albeit we still use the slogan “Paradise of the Zulu Kingdom” and it is this brand that we utilise on all our marketing tools, promotions, in the media and at events we support. Our brand (and associated visual teasers and promotional items) is the primary thrust that firstly draws consumers towards our large destination. People when asked where they are going for a break will normally say “to the South Coast”. Within the consumer purchase response, tourists will first decide on the broader destination (which is the South Coast) then refine their choice to a specific location such as Scottburgh, Margate, Oribi Gorge or Hibberdene. Then decide which product to support for accommodation, tours, experiences and the likes. It is the primary brand- the South Coast

brand that starts or reinforces the process. This brand has a visual component and also represents the reputation of the greater South Coast and reputation is fragile and needs to monitored and nurtured each day. Tourism practitioners often think we are responsible for their business success - we are in fact the facilitator of the process described above and unless products and services are within the information, adverts and listings we provide, the consumer response to their enterprise may not occur. Within a hierarchy of brands, many tourism areas are pressured to profile not only their tourism brand but also the brands of administration ( local government) which is an on-going debate in tourism circles. Tourism does not confine itself to geo-political boundaries. Tourism brands often overlap many such boundaries and the all important consumer is not interested for example in going to Umgungundlovu or Mngeni, they respond to the lure of the Midlands Brand (mainly the Midlands Meander). Thankfully we have a simple yet strong brand which we present at every conceivable opportunity so when you see our logo, please consider that it is Ugu South Coast Tourism alongwithourgovernmentandprivatesector partners that keeps the brand dynamism going. Just a closing comment - last week I hosted an old university friend whose family lives in Hermanus.

Being a former diplomat with extensive touring experience he was very complimentary aboutthepresentation, lookandfeeloftheSouth Coast.

Comingfromthesometimes“superior”Cape folk I think we can take it as a real compliment. So let’s savour the joys of Spring in our lush paradise and really gear up for the big season.

types of vegetables. Keep it real Mother Nature never needed chemical cocktails before, so stay away from pesticides, weed killers and chemical fertilizers and use allnatural compost instead. Organic matter helps improve the water retention and permeability of your soils, making them easier to work with. It also provides plants with high nutrient levels for better seed germination and good root development. Companion planting is a good way to get around the pest problem. For example, Nasturtiumsplantedwithpumpkins, squash and cucumbers deter beetles, aphids and other insects that attack the

S South Africa celebrates Heritage Month, we have an opportunity to reflect on what heritage really means to us as individuals, and as a nation. It is the multitude of cultures, races and languages, together with our countries historical democracy and its heroes which makesHeritageDaysuchawidelycelebrated public holiday in South Africa. There is, however, another side of the “heritage” coin – the natural resources that we have both inherited and squandered. Heritage Day is a good time to remember the land that has been entrusted to us and the legacy that we as a nation and as individuals can leave behind. With this natural heritage in mind, the composting experts, Farmyard Organics, give some tips on how to take your heritage into you own hands by making eco-friendly decisions in your home, garden, work place and community. Grow your own and buy locally Sustainable farming is about meeting the needs of South Africans today and in the future. The recent global rise in food prices reinforces

the basic importance of the agricultural sector for social and economic stability in South Africa. So, although it takes time and effort – make the decision to read the labels of products andbuyonlywhatisproducedlocally. You can take it a step further and support KZN producers. In this way, we can collectively make a significant difference to the local agricultural industry. However, for many, organic produce is simply too expensive. Homemade food gardens are a great way to eat organically and save on the grocery bill. Why not start a community food garden and get your neighbours or colleagues involved? Use the frames of old doors to build a neat garden and to separate different

Create a nursery your baby will love

IT’S an incredibly exciting time – setting up a nursery for your unborn child. You’re filled with a sense of wonder that you’re about to bring a child into the world, and you’re also anxious and excited to meet this new little person. Of course, any parent will want the nursery to be just right – filled with everything your baby could possibly want and need. However, this isn’t always

the reality. Furniture is expensive, toys are also priceyandyouwillprobablyhavetowatchyourbudget very carefully. Babies aren’t cheap. You also have to consider the costs that are involved in making your entire home child friendly. That being said, there are a few ways to cheat the system and ensure that you have a wonderful nursery for your bundle of joy.

plants. Traditionally there is a tendency for open spaces and parks in cities and towns to be planted with exotic plants.Thismakesthemhighmaintenance areas, requiring lots of watering, weeding and fertilization. Already equipped to natural conditions, indigenous plants are easy to grow and maintain, generally need less fertilizer and water and need less effort to fight off pests. Be water wise – inside and out Adopt a few smart watering habits to add to your gardening regime. Use organic mulch in garden beds and around trees to retain moisture and prevent weeds. Water your garden in the early mornings to give the plants a good supply of water to face the heat of the day. An easy way to save water is to collect rainwater runoff from your roof in rain barrels or even better, a Jo Jo tank next to your home (and office if you are a business owner). Use that free, naturally soft water for your garden and other household needs. Reuse and recycle

Start with the essentials Therearecertainitemsthatyoucan’tdo without. A cot, storage, a changing table and a chair for you to sit on when doing late night feeds. It’s important to get those in place first, before you start decorating or adding any other furniture. The great thing is, you’re already scoring with these essentials. If you put in a chest of drawers or a cupboard that’s got a flat top and is the same height as a table would be, you don’t need to buy an extra changing table. Make sure you have visual stimulation

It will take some getting used to, but by separating your plastics, paper, tins and glass into different bins you will reduce the amount of waste that ends up on dumps. Set up a recycling station at your office or complex and get others involved. The garden is the perfect recycling centre for almost any organic waste, includingfoodscrapskeptinseparate bins and transported to your compost heap. You can even recycle inorganic householdwasteintorealorpotential garden equipment. For example, no special, expensive equipment is needed to give your plants the benefits of reflected lightproved effective in helping to repel plant-eating insects, including aphids. Shiny metal lids cut from food cans, for instance, placed on the ground under the foliage of sunlightloving plants like tomatoes and peppersreflectlightandenhancegrowth. So this Heritage Month, proudly buySouthAfricanproducts, getwaste and water smart and make informed decisions about your consumption after all, this is not only a celebration of our heritage but the opportunity to start preparing for the heritage we leave behind.

in the room A baby needs to be in an environment that is bright and has lots happening. This visual stimulation is so important for their development. This is why mobiles hanging over cots and lights that cast shapes on the walls are favourites for a nursery. If these kinds of items don’t fit into your budget to begin with – don’t worry. A great way to bring in visual stimulation is just by painting the walls in bright colours. Try picking a fun theme – under water or a jungle – and painting shapes on the walls that match. This will be much cheaper than buying lots of toys. Borrow as much as you can There’s nothing wrong with second-hand furniture from friends, family or neighbours whose children have out grown their nursery. In fact, the parents will probably thank you for taking the cot or changing table off their hands so that they can make room for items that their toddlers now need. Shop around for the best price Take your time when shopping, and go looking for the bargain. You don’t have to get the latest and greatest gadgets for your baby, so rather see if you can get slightly older item at a reduced rate. You can also check sites like Gumtree or BidorBuy for deals. Just be sure to go and see the items before you actually agree to buy them. Sourced: www.homemakersonline.co.za

What to consider when choosing a school >> Make sure you take these factors into consideration

T

HERE is a lot to think about when choosing the right school for your child. Whether you are moving them to a new school or just choosing a school for them to start in, it is a big decision. How do you know what option is best?

Class Size: The number of children in each classroom may make a difference in how much your child is able to learn. Generally, state schools have large classes, butifyoulookaroundyoumayfind some that have smaller classes. Inde-

pendent or private schools tend to have smaller classes. School Size: Some children do better in large schools where they have many other children to play with and many choi-

ces for classes. Others like smaller schools, where there aren’t as many choices for classes and closer relationships with students and teachers can be made. Again, state schools tend to be large, with large classes and fewer teachers. However, many of those teachers are dedicated and hard-working people who will do their best to give your child the individual attention they need.

for a school to be racially, ethnically, and culturally diverse. AlthoughstateschoolsinSouthAfrica are not allowed to exclude anyone based on race or cultural background, some schools are mainly white, black, Indian or coloured simply because that is the way it has workedout.Youmayneedtolookoutside of your own community if you want your child to experience a truly multi-ethnic, multicultural school.

Location: Most families will try to choose a school close to them for convenience. You should also consider your child's safety on the trip to and from school, and whileatschool, andwhatfacilities are in the area as well (library, swimming pool and so on), if you can.

School Fees: Some state schools charge fees, but if youareunabletopaythefeestheywill still accept your child - no child may be denied basic education. Ask at the local schools about fees, ‘hidden costs’ such as books, stationery and so on, and fee exemptions or discounts (many schools offer discounts for siblings). Independent schools charge higher fees and do not offer fee exemptions, but many offer bursaries.

Diversity: To some parents it is important

Michaelhouse for boys excels

Michaelhouse, the Anglican Di ocesan College of Natal, was founded in 1896 and is a South African boarding school for senior boys, with an in ternational repu tation.

>> School aims to provide a dynamic and progressive education

T

HEMichaelhouseboardingschoolfor boys is a school of established heri tage with an innate respect for the individual. It is this long held tradition that distinguishes Michaelhouse from other senior boys' schools. This boarding school for boys is set amongst the rolling green hills of the KwaZuluNatal Midlands, providing sec ondary education from E Block (Grade 8) to A Block (Grade 12). The 2013 class set a new benchmark for Matriculation success with an average of 2.8 A symbols per student. This achieve ment is truly remarkable and along with being the highest average of any inde

pendent boys' school in the country. Of the 107 boys who sat the examina tions last year, 101 achieved degree entry certificates with the balance of six boys passing with diploma entry certificates. An average grade of 73% was achieved by the class. The results reflected an incredibly bal ancedgroupwithanincredible42ofMaths students achieving a distinction, more than half the Physical Science class earn ing an A symbol and both Music students taking home an A symbol for the subject. All this goes in hand with the school's mis sion which is "to provide a dynamic and progressive education for boys that re

spects individual needs and embraces di versity and change in pursuit of academic, sportingandculturalexcellence, whilepro viding social and leadership skills and nur turing spiritual growth." Leadership training also forms an inte gral part of the education programme of fered at Michaelhouse. With a view to en couraging growth and individual leader ship skills, all boys are regularly involved in developmentally appropriate tasks and experiences. Extended hikes and dynamic adventure challenges are designed to en courage teamwork and cooperation and to foster selfdiscovery and esteem. They fo cus on building confidence in each boy so

Tips for seniors

WE WILL BEAT ANY ADVERTISED PRICE ON THE SOUTH COAST WHILE STOCKS LAST

>>Don’t fall for con artists’ tricks

U

NSCRUPULOUS fraudsters and petty criminals are increasingly preying on vulnerable senior citizens who are seen as “soft targets”. Here are some valuable hints and tips to bear in mind: Senior safety begins at home: Install and use good locks on doors and windows Don’t hide keys under the doormat, in the mailbox or in a pot plant. If needed, leave a spare key with a family member or a trusted neighbour When service or delivery people come to the door, ask for identification and check with their company if you’re still not 100% certain about their identity Make sure that the street number on your house is large, welllit and unobstructed so that emergency personnel can find your home quickly when needed If you decide to install an alarm system, consider

one that is monitored for burglary, fire and medical emergencies If you live in a retirement home, ensure you have communication with the guard at the main gate Don’t fall for con artists’ tricks: Be wary of offers if they sound too good to be true, such as a free vacation, miracle cure, surefire invest ment, etc. Be wary of anyone requesting personal informa tion such as your credit card and/or banking details. If necessary, ask them for their details and call them back once you have verified that it is a legitimate re quest If someone tries to rush you into signing an insur ance policy, sales contract or any other contractual agreement, be suspicious. Read the documentation very carefully, and if possible ask a trusted friend or an advisor to check it too. Senior citizens can follow easy steps to be safe in their homes and outside. PHOTO: SOURCED

Beer this — a pint really is good for you YOUmightalreadybeawareofthehealthbenefits of moderate alcohol consumption, but did you know that your favourite pint (around 470 ml) may actually have some amazing health benefits you were probably not aware of? This could be really good news if you are a beer drinker, but before you get too excited about that next drink and order a keg, remember that alcohol is a double-edged sword — with moderation and responsibility being the key to a healthy balance. Johannesburg-based private practising dietician Ashleigh Caradas says that the research shows that people who consume alcohol moderately live longer than those who don’t drink alcohol at all. “Whilesomeofthehealthbenefitsassociated with moderate beer drinking can be attributed to the ether portion of alcohol itself, some of the benefits can be uniquely attributed to your favourite beer,” explains Caradas. Regardless of your alcohol choices, Caradas warns that in excess, alcohol can raise blood pressure and triglyceride levels (thus increasing heart disease risk) and can leach calcium from the bones (thus increasing osteoporosis risk), or could lead to liver or kidney damage. “Thekeythereforetoenjoyingbeer’shealth benefits, is moderation. And what is moderation? It means no more than two to three 340 ml cans of beer per day for men and no more than one to two for women,” she says. For those who can practise moderation, these are some of the health benefits you may enjoy. • INCREASED INTAKE OF PROTEIN, B VITAMINS AND ANTIOXIDANTS From a nutritional standpoint, beer contains more protein and B vitamins than wine. According to a 2001 antioxidant food review in Nutrition Reviews, beer contains around double the amount of antioxidants as whitewinebuthalfofthatofredwine.Thespecific antioxidants in beer are different because the barley and hops used in the production of beer contain flavonoids different from those in the grapes used in the production of wine.

• HEALTHIER BOWEL FUNCTION Beer is a good source of soluble fibre, which is derived from the cell walls of malted barley. One litre of beer can contain up to six grams of soluble fibre, which is a third of the recommended daily intake. Solublefibreaidsinhealthybowelfunction, and also helps mop up excess cholesterol and sugar in the digestive system. A 230 ml can of beer will contain about 5,7 grams of total carbohydrates. Of those, just 2,5 grams will be residual sugar and the rest dietary fibre. In comparison, a standard (175 ml) glass of wine contains 5,9 grams of carbohydrate but 5,6 grams of that will be free sugars and wine has no dietary fibre. • REDUCED RISK OF HEART DISEASE The topic of heart disease and alcohol is controversial because it can be both a protective and a causal factor, explains Caradas. It really depends on the mechanism of action and what the individual is going to benefit from most — either moderation or abstinence. It has long been known that moderate alcohol consumption reduces the risk of heart disease, when comparedtoheavydrinkersandeventeetotalers. The main mechanisms by which beer lowers heart disease risk is by increasing our levels of HDL, or good cholesterol and by preventing clotting (by lowering clotting factors like fibrinogen) and therefore thinning the blood. However, people with high triglycerides or hypertension are still encouraged to exercise caution when drinking alcohol, which exacerbatesthesetworiskfactorsforcoronaryartery disease, explains Caradas. • STRONGER BONES Beer is high in the mineral silicon, which can act as a powerful bone strengthener. In fact, beeristheonlynaturalsourceofsilicaforpost– menopausal women. According to a 2009 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutri tion, moderate beer drinkers had a higher bone mineral density when compared to peo-

ple who drank more or fewer beers. Pale ale tends to have the highest silica content of all the beer types. “Don’t use beer as your anti-osteoporosis plan. High intakes of calcium, lots of vegetables and weight-bearing exercise are key to a healthy bone density,” advises Caradas. • REDUCED CANCER RISK Heterocyclic amines (HCAs) are carcinogenic compounds produced when meat is cooked at high temperatures. Marinating meat or chicken in beer or wine has been shown to reduce the formation of carcinogenic HCA’s by up to 88% with beer to be the more effective HCA-reducing marinade according to a 2009 study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. At the same time, high alcohol intake has been linked to certain cancers, like those of the mouth and digestive system as well as breast cancers. • REDUCED RISK OF DIABETES “Contrary to what you might think, alcohol actually lowers blood sugar rather than raising it,” says Caradas. Alarge2011Harvardstudyofabout38 000 middle-aged men found that when those who drank moderately (around two drinks per day), dropped their diabetes risk by 25%. Beer, however, has a high glycemic index of 100, which means it can cause spikes and then drops in blood sugar levels. In moderation, however, the effect is not severe because beer has a moderate glycemic load of six, due to its relatively low carbohydrate content. • IMPROVED COGNITION “In high amounts, alcohol can cause brain damage, but in moderation it can actually sharpen the mind and even prevent dementia,” says Caradas. Results from the Nurses Health Study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2005, which looked at the health of 11 000 older women showed that moderate drinkers (those who consumed about one drink a day) loweredtheirriskofmentaldeclinebyasmuch as 20%, compared to non-drinkers. In addition, older women who drank moderately were found to benefit the most from moderate drinking. • CAN BEER BE USED AS PART OF A CALORIE-CONTROLLED DIET? The term “beer belly” is somewhat of a myth, explains Caradas. “We cannot blame our size on just one thing. The real reasons for increased weight gain are too many calories relativetotheamountofenergyburntoff,”sheexplains. Whilebeermaycontributetothiscalorieintake, itisonlyasmallpartoftheequation. Beer drinking is often accompanied by heavy eating, whichcouldcauseissueswithweightgain. Abeercontainsaround150calories(or630 kilojoules), and around 12 grams carbohydrates, which is less than that found in a slice of bread. Moderate consumption in conjunction with a healthy diet should not therefore lead to weight gain, provided calorie and carbohydrates are controlled elsewhere in the daily diet. If you are a habitual beer drinker, do so always in moderation. If you have hypertension or any pre-existing heart condition, always consult your physician especially if you tend to drink in excess, says Caradas. — News24.

The new Toyota Yaris.

Eschewing supermini stereotypes for a highly dis tinctive exterior, the new Yaris sees the most dramatic execution of Toyota’s contemporary frontal design language to date with sharpedged detailing. The narrow upper and large grilles, a hallmark of Toyota’s current design, are present but they now merge at the point of the Toyota emblem to form a powerful cross shape. Eight exterior colours are available, including new AvanteGarde Bronze Metallic (petrol models only) and Pacific Blue Metallic. Lava Red Metallic and Pearl White Metallic are Hybrid exclusive colours. The upper instrument panel has been made thin ner, and the upper surface of the driver’s instrument binnacle has been restyled to give a slimmer appear ance. New seat trims are provided, with a new fabric pat tern and colours. Befitting its rangetopper status, the Hybrid is decked out in a leather and cloth combo. ThenewYarisisavailablewiththreeenginechoices – two petrol, and a hybrid. The full hybrid system, a first for this segment, benefits from adjustments which have brought its CO2 emissions down further, from 88 to 82g/km. Extremely fuel efficient (3,6 litres in the combined cycle) and clean (virtually zero NOx and particulate emissions), this innovative powertrain is at the cutting edge of technology. Planets and meteor showers in October

>> Don’t miss the meteor shower on the morning of October 21, with meteors every three minutes. RADO MOSKOV radomoskov@gmail.com Mercury THE best time to observe it is in the beginning of the month on the west after sunset, sets at 7.47pm. Mercury is not only the nearest planet to the Sun, according to Kepler’s third law it is also the fastest one orbiting the Sun. You can visually see this by watching daily and seeing it disappear in front of the sun by the 16th, when Mercury will be at inferior conjunction, lined up with the Earth and the Sun, at perigee the smallest distance from Earth, 99 Million km.

For more info see www.crocodilecrazy.co.za For tickets please phone 039 3166204

Venus Can’t be seen during October because it will closer to the sun. On the 23rd it will be at superior conjunction at its greatest dis tance from us, behind the Sun. Mars Can be seen high on the west, keeping more or less the same distance from the horizon through the month and moving in Ophi ucus. On the 21st it will enter Sagittarius, where it will stay till for rest of the month. Don’t miss the night of 27th, when Mars is going to be within the same field of view of 48X telescope to gether with the beautiful Lagoon Nebula,. Jupiter Is in Cancer, can be seen before sunrise on the northeastern horizon. Can be easily confused with Venus as a morning star but Jupiter’s royal gold brightnessbetraythatitisthebiggestplanet.By14th will enter Leo. In the beginning of the month rises at 3h12, by the end of the month at 1h30. Saturn Can be seen low on the western horizon in the evening in the beginning of the month, and during the month will go lower and lower with each passing day, so that by the end of the month will disappear in the rays of the setting Sun. Uranus In October the conditions to see Uranus are the best. On the 7th is at opposition and it will be at its nearest to us directly opposing the Earth as seen from the Sun, and that will be the best time to see it, available throughout the whole night in Pisces, just 2.4° from the faint star Delta Piscium. Neptune Is high enough by sunset in the beginning of the month on the east, setting at 6H02, at the end of the month 4H00, in Aquarius. METEOR SHOWERS Orionodis From 2nd October till 7th November in constella tion Orion. On 21 August at 4H21 is the maximum, 23 meteors per hour. The tiny crescent Moon will be very low on the horizon and its weak light will not interfere with the glorious view. Hope to be a cloud less morning as to enjoy the spectacle.

Cycle your heart out >> It’s a first for the South Coast

T

HIS year’s Africa Marine & Leisure Expo will see one very important addition to the traditional stalls, markets, activities and conservational speakers, which will take the spotlight at the event. The SouthCoast Strongman Triathlon will be the main sporting focus at the expo, which takes place in and around Scottburgh during the first weekend of November. The event is being held in association with Triathlon Plus SA Magazine and SouthCoast Tourism and will follow an innovative format not previously seen in South Africa, with its three separate stages being held over the course of three days. This new format, as well as the event’s status as one of only a few triathlons currently held in southern KwaZulu-Natal, will act as a draw for top calibre triathletes while also keeping the event accessible for more casual entrants. With Scottburgh’s spectacular beaches providing a fitting backdrop for such displays of sporting prowess, the triathlon is sure to be a real hit with spectators as well. The SouthCoast Strongman Triathlon will run from Friday 31 October through until Sunday 2 November, with each day dedicated to one of the event’s three disciplines. By spacing out the running, swimming and cycling, competitors will be able to approach each section of the competition feeling fresh and able to perform to their very best. Additionally, each discipline will have separate categories catering to entrants of every age bracket, and those that take part will have the opportunity to compete either singly or in teams. The format of the new triathlon lends the event an exciting flexibility, meaning that competitors can choose to take part in one, two or all three elements. their times added together over the course of the weekend to determine the eventual overall champion. Thanks to the extended nature of theSouthCoastStrongmanTriathlon, the individual events on each day will be relatively short- giving spectators ample time to appreciate the rest of what the expo has to offer whilst still lending their support to competitors. The expo aims to celebrate humanity’s relationship with the ocean, whilst simultaneously exploring and promoting the concept of marine conservation. To this end, the event will also include tented stalls and exhibitions illustrating the work of both local and international conservation organisations, and a programme of

lectures by renowned and influential speakers on the subject of environmentalism. Other highlights of the event include a children’s rock angling competition, an Outdoor Expo dedicated to all of the water sports for which the KwaZulu-Natal area is so famous, a Craft Market, and the Food Truck Revolution Market. With plenty of fun activities on offer for visitors of all ages, the event promises to be not only educational and inspirational, but a great day out for all the family as well.
