ESIDENTS living in certain sections of Uvongo have been left high and dry for nine days (by Wednesday) due to a water interruption which started a day before the Easter weekend.

Ugu District Municipality says it’sworkingtirelesslytorestorethe water supply, but residents are irateandhaveventedtheirfrustrations to the Fever and on social media sites.

Manaba was also affected by the problem.

Residents complained that they cannot cook, bath and clean their homes.

One also complained of waterrelief trucks doing rounds at 11pm when residents had retired for the night.

Tasmee Hylkemi, a Uvongo resident, said she had forwarded several emails to the DD Naidoo’s officeandwaswaitingtomeetwith him. “As a property and business owner, I refuse to invest any more money on the South Coast. I have put building plans on hold until Ugu can show me its plan of action to stop these ridiculous water interruptions. They are driving tourism away and there are many others who feel the same way ,� she said.

Teenage girl stabbed to death A 17-YEAR-OLD girl, who arrived at the gate of a Marburg house, was stabbed several times on Tuesday at about midday.

The girl lived in Friesland Drive, where the incident took place, and had returned from Lusikisiki.

“A 22-year-old man allegedly approached her and tried to rob her of a bag at knife point. When she allegedly resisted, he stabbed her several times and she died,” said po-

Community members who saw what was happening, ran after the perpetrator. They also notified police and a description was given.

He was caught in Jesus Location, Bhoboyi with the teenager’s bag, cellphone and wallet.Aknifewasalsorecovered.

The arresting officers were Sergeant Melvin Newell, Constable Sibusiso Cele and Constable Zonwabele Mpofana who are stationed at the 10111 call centre, Port Shepstone.

Accident in Oslo Beach, one seriously injured A MAN is fighting for his life after his vehicle went off the road, airborne, and landed on its side in Oslo Beach on Tuesday.

“Specialised extrication equipment were used to free the patient from the wreck,” said Kwazulu Private Ambulance spokesperson Belinda Catchpole.

Paramedics stabilised the patient on scene and transported him to hospital.

EVEN people died, one a child, after a head-on collision on the freeway at the Shelly Beach offramp on Friday.

Netcare 911 and KZN EMS paramedicsandotheremergencyservices arrived found carnage, accident debris and the twisted frames of the vehicles spread over a large area with some occupants trapped in the wreckages.

After triaging it was found that six people had died while a man sustained critical injuries.

After the man was extricated and immobilised on a trauma board, he

was taken to hospital.

Two people were seriously injured after a vehicle overturned along the R61 between Margate and Shelly Beach on Thursday afternoon.

Netcare 911 paramedics and the fire service found that the vehicle had veered off the road, overturned and smashed into a tree causing the wreckage to come to rest on its side.

On Thursday evening, a man trying to cross the road on the freeway between Ramsgate and Southbroom, landed in front of a vehicle.

The by-law states: “No person shall be on the sea shore or in the sea or any other place to which these by-laws apply, other than a booth, toilet or change-room, unlesssodressedthat,ifafemale,her nipples are concealed from view and, if a male or female, his or her private parts are concealed from view, and in each case by a suitable article of opaque clothing.”

When the Fever visited Trafalgar on Saturday, several naturists had settled on Mpenjati beach and said they were enjoying the sand, sea and sun very much.

HCM spokesperson, Simon April,saidwhencounciltookaresolution to approve the application on 28 October, it relaxed Section 5.1 and 5.2 of the beach bylaws for that demarcated beach.

“The issue of officially opening the beach is optional and the municipality has taken a stance of indefinitely postponing it as there are engagements with the Concerned Citizens of HCM who made a representation to council for it to rescind its decision,” he said.

There has been no decision in that regard yet.

“Thereforecouncil’sdecisionto approve the nudist-friendly beach still stands,” added April.

He said while the municipality discourages use of the beach until everything is finalised, it should be noted that “there was nothing wrong done by the naturists as the decision of council is still in existence”.

“The municipality, for now, together with the naturists have erected warning signs on the beach and also the code of conduct that one has to abide with when on that beach,” said April.

He added that HCM is still processing the submissions by the Concerned Citizens and “one hopes that the council will be able to take a decision on it in the near future”.

Water leak fixed after Fever intervention AN Albersville woman, who complained for months about water that had been flowing from above her house in Pellican Road says the problem was fixed after reporting the matter to the Fever.

Ulleta Ogle reported the matter to the Fever on Friday andbySundayithadbeenfixed after phone calls from Fever to Ugu. “Ihadreporteditrepeatedly since December and nothing happened. It was frustrating and absolutely impossible to live in that condition.”

She said Ugu visited the place twice over the past few months after laying complaints, however nothing had come from the visits.

Ugu operations manager in charge of the case Malibongwe Luswazi said delays in the process had been due to the complexity of the case and the municipality had to do “a lot of troubleshooting”.

“We had to go on a four-hour inspection of the area searchingfortheleakingpipeandother residents were complaining about damage to their pavements,soweweretryingtofind a way to pin-point the exact station of the leak with as little collateral damage as possible.”

He said that the municipality empathised with the woman’s frustrations and staff would work on resolving the matter diligently.

The leakage was resolved a few days later.

90-YEAR-OLD pensioner has beengiventherun-aroundfor a rebate on his water account.

The elderly man from Sunwich Port said he applied for a pensioner’s rebate on his water account with the Hibiscus Coast Municipality, but instead the amount was increased.

The pensioner said he has been paying his water account regularly every month.

“I have been paying R432.92 every month, but I still receive statements and letters from the municipality saying I owe them money.”

Alleged murderer arrested

A MAN sustained a serious fracture after he jumped from a sand bank on Mtwalume beach on Wednesday afternoon.

A report indicates that the man tried to jump from a large sand bank when his leg gave way and fractured.

Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene and in a combined effort the man was stabilised and carried through the water and across rocks to get to the ambulance, he was then transported to hospital.

A MAN, wanted for murder, three house robberies and a theft case in the Pennington area, finally faced the long arm of the law when he was arrested on Sunday in Chabane, near Hibberdene.

“The suspect went on a crime spree in December 2014 and January 2015 in the area and robbed residents in Pennington at gunpoint at night,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

During one of the house robberies, a man was stabbed to death.

The arresting officers were Sergeant Eugene Blankenberg, Constable Kavithasen Naidoo, Constable Thulaz Mayeza and Constable Simingaye Mavundla from the Hibberdene task team.

They were assisted by members from Crime Intelligence Gathering and Public Order Policing.

“When I went back to the municipality in February to ask about a letter I received the lady there told me that I have outstanding documents for my rebate application and that is why my rebate has not been granted.”

The pensioner paid his bill for February and was told that he owes R2 064.60, which he had to pay by the end of March.

The pensioner said his greatest concern is that the balance keeps accumulating and he has never missed a payment.

“The amount keeps going up and they keep sending me back for my rebate - how can this happen,” he asked.

All he wants is for the municipality to rectify this, he said.

The Fever contacted the municipality regarding this issue, but at the time of going to press no response had been forthcoming.

Hospital invites males for circumcision

HE Port Shepstone Regional Hospital invites males aged 14 and older to participate in a circumcision drive on 11 April. Hospital public relations officer Phumza Morai said the free procedure is aimed at helping participants’ sexual health.

It has been proved that circumcised males are considerably less likely to contact HIV from their female partners. The circumcision process will start at 7:30am in the hospital’s outpatient department.

Morai said the hospital will take necessary precaution to ensure safety of all participants.

Theprocedureisperformedbytrained health-care professionals who are specially trained to perform circumcisions.

She also said as a value-added healthcare service, males attending this campaign will be educated on men’s sexual health and correct wound care before the procedure is done.

Minors between the ages of 14 and 17 are required to come with their parents or guardians to sign a consent form.

A

YEAR has passed and the Marburg Youth Centre has grown drastically.

The first brick was laid in 2009 on the property of the Norwegian Settler’s Church and the centre officially opened in March 2014.

It consisted only of a gym at first, where members of the surrounding communities could train at low cost.

It now boasts a music academy, leadership academy, an after-school programme, Siya Sebenza (skills development for the unemployed) and a conference facility.

These programmes provide constructive activities for the youth to do as many are unemployed.

“It is amazing to be a part of a structure that gives opportunities to different people. Because of the diversity of our programmes, there is something for everyone to become involved in,” said Richard Harrell, Marburg Youth Centre manager.

He added that he was proud of the centre and its dedicated staff who work tirelessly to secure sponsorships and funding to make each programme successful.

“We have many ideas for more programmes which we can only implement once we have secured funding for them.

We don’t want to implement anything that we’re unable to sustain,” he said.

The youth centre also provides office space for other Genesis Trust programmes

Gym and Live It The gym has about 300 members who attend regularly and look forward to the annual Strongman competition.

A recent addition is the Live It fitness programme which offers high intensity training, traditional weight training and short work-out sessions.

Music academy This programme has proven that music improves attention span, achieves the ideal brain state for studying and memo-

rising and relieves stress. The academy has acquired over 150 registered members in just nine months. It offers keyboard, guitar, drums and vocal lessons as well as a choir and band development in various schools.

Leadership academy Initiated by Pastor Trevor Downham of theNorwegianSettler’sChurch,theacademy offers a three-day course for pupils in Grades8to11andaimstoequipyoungsters with the skills and values required to become effective leaders.

Genesis After-school Programme (Gap) Primary-school children attend the “reading room” after school to participate in arts and crafts, physical activities, Bible

study and reading. Gap moved from the youth centre to Merlewood as children from the area were crossing the main road in heavy traffic. The children are also given a meal and a beverage.

Siya Sebenza Work 4 a Living Through this initiative, unemployed people are trained and equipped to be effective, professional and valuable in the work place.The centre also networks with localbusinessesthathaveaneedforexcellent employees, and students who have shown potential during the course are recommended for vacancies.

Conference facility This forms part of a sustainability plan where the conference room is marketed to local businesses for meetings, workshops and staff activities.

AVING a healthy relationshipwithyourchildren occurs when they feel valued, understood, accepted and is helped by you to make choices. This allows your children to develop selfesteem and a capacity to think and manage their thoughts, feelings and behaviour in an acceptable way.

Babies and tots need appropriate physical contact like hugging and cuddling, as well as face-to-face contact like playing ‘peek-aboo’. Sing and repeat rhymes to them, use a softer tone of voice and as they grow work with them to develop age appropriate skills.

With our older children, there are more methods to develop strong and healthy relationships, through understanding, encouragement recognition, behaviours that encourage closeness, consistency, listening, sensitivity, reliability and predictability, helping children and young people express their feelings and lastly positive pro-social behaviour and modelling such behaviour.

Children are well versed in their rights, but some choose not to know their responsibilities. Parents need to know their children’s right as well as

their responsibilities. Building onto these healthy relationships our children have rights and responsibilities, such as: •Children have the right to be taken seriously.

• And the responsibility to listen to others.

As for having to cope with destruction from monkeys, porcupines and wild pigs in a large garden compared to an ordinary town garden, it is not comparable.

If HCM decides to use human control methods on these monkeys that are now truly becoming a pest, I will be one of the first to request their help.

I AM writing this on behalf of my friend who is in desperate need of some extractions of a few top teeth and a top plate. He is a lovely man and unfortunately, when he applies for a job he doesn’t get it because his teeth are decayed and some are missing.

THOBISI Khumalo says he can’t express enough gratitude towards the Port ShepstonebranchoftheDepartmentofSocial Welfare.

Khumalo was taken under social welfare when he was 15 after his parents died.

Khumalo lived with his grandfather when he was in his final school year in 2010, but his grandfather died just before he passed matric.

“Before my grandfather passed away we survived on a social welfare grant. After he passed away I had no means of survival as my grant had also stopped because I was over age,” he said Khumalo was then taken care of by his brother who was able to get part-time employment, even though this didn’t bring in much money.

“Mybrotherwasluckytogetpart-timework doing road-work jobs and was able to buy groceries, but unfortunately, he could not pay my registration fees for my tertiary education after I completed matric in 2010,” said Khumalo.

His brother has also died however.

In2011Khumalowasforcedtostayathome and try to raise money to get into a tertiary education institution.

Khumalo said raising registration fees was difficult so he sought help from social welfare.

“I took three gap years before going back to social welfare this year asking for assistance.”

Welfare did not disappoint Khumalo as the staff knew his background from when he was under their care. The department provided him with registration money and now he is a social science and housing pupil at the University of Kwa- Zulu-Natal.

The department also managed to get him sponsors who are paying for his accommodation and food.

“I knew that my social welfare family would never disappoint me. I am a full-time student through the support I receive from them. Its all up to me to work hard as they have given me a foundation for the future,” he said.

Khumalo said he would like all the children under welfare care to not give up.

He encouraged them to work hard and use him as an example and appreciate what they are receiving from the department.

Don’t buy stolen property, SAPS warn A HIBBERDENE resident, Eugene Halliday, received information that a person wanted to sell a generator which was stolen from a Hibberdene business over the weekend.

On Wednesday at around 8pm, he wenttoanareaneartheHibberdenetaxi rank and was just in time to see the suspect carrying the said generator.

However, when the perpetrator saw Halliday’s vehicle approach, he ran off, leaving the generator behind.

Hibberdene police took the generator for safekeeping and the owner, who did not open a criminal case, went to identify it.

“We warn people to report incidents whereindividualswanttosellsuspected stolen property to them.

“Buying stolen property is a crime and you may be arrested and charged for possession of stolen property,” said police spokesperson LieutenantColonel Zandra Wiid.

Let’s face it, back ache is certainly not for sissies, after falling in a cave in Spain 30 years ago and breaking her back, my mom is no stranger to back problems. With her recent woes I had no option than to check her into the Marina Beach rest home for 10 days whereby hopefully she will be able to maneuver again with more ease.

En route to the rest home I had no idea what to expect and was in fact quite nervous, thankfully the home was far beyond what I imagined. The facility itself portrays a pleasant farm atmosphere and had none of the usual clinical scents that usually prevail in such establishments.

The fact that my mom has to be cared for a short while is quite daunting especially since just last week we were at home in Cape Town recharging the batteries and catching up with old friends, Some of whom are so larny they feed their dogs ostrich fillet for treats.

Anyway they were all sitting at our counter, completely oblivious to me the man servant, reminiscing on past husbands and the pros and cons of female orgasm, when my mom pointed to a wooden rooster in the kitchen, saying girls what you all say is meaningless for as long as I have a cock in the window I’m doing fine. Surely she realised her comment literally made me choke and all I wanted to do was play ostrich and bury my head in the sand.

Thankfully, someone steered the conversation to a particular day where they, after listening to jazz at the Winchester mansions in Cape Town left the building straight into the famous Cape southeaster that is capable of blowing buses over.

After much laughter, death as always entered the fray and a toast was made to my great aunty Lena who recently died in

Wait, I am a parent as well and my child just turned 21 which makes me feel quite ancient at times.

So mom, I think together we should get a remember diary and this way I will come to realise that I forget more things than you do, similarly lets tackle each task with the thinking that failure is not an option and we will get it done.

I fondly remember my late grandmother whom I visited as often as I could in Holland - she was a remarkable woman who had seven children, Sadly she lost her only son when he was seven and was so strong she remarked that it is better to lose a child at seven than at 17.

My mom and her twin sister witnessed one encounter when they were about 10 by seeing their slightly inebriated father giving my grandmother a pair of blue turquoise panties as a peace offering-comepresent. To the horror of the twins her reaction was to promptly hit him with a frying pan on the head and tell him in Dutch to compare the blues.

ETS very often carry viruses, bacteria and parasites into the house, which can be harmful to your health. Animals also have body odour, just as we do, and the bigger the animal, the stronger the odour may be. As such, the first rule of owning a pet is that you keep them clean and well washed at all times to allow you to live happily side by side. However, it is also important not to wash them too regularly, as this could have a nasty effect on the animal's skin, causing eczema, rashes and irritations. Most vets agree that giving your dog or cat a good wash once every two weeks should suffice. Also, if your pets are living indoors, it is essential that you conscientiously keep up with anti-tick and flea treatments as prescribed by your vet.

Prevention Prevention is always better than cure, so try and limit the amount of time your pets are indoors and the areas in your home that they can access.

Animals should be left outside to run around during the day while you are at work. This is not only good for your home, but it is healthy for your pets andwillensurethattheygetadequate exercise and exposure to the sun. Be sure however, that your pets have a

It contains agents that will kill the bacteria and remove the bad smells. If the stain and odour are stubborn, keep repeating the process until they are gone. Now, using paper towel, press down on the area until all

the moisture is completely removed.

Then, pour a lot of salt on the affected area and leave it until the area is completely dry. Once it is dry, vacuum up the salt and the carpet should be as good as new.

Cleaning tiled, paved or concrete surfaces If your cat has managed to urinate onto a tiled, paved or concrete surface, wash it down with a cleaning liquid that has no ammonia in it. Once this is done, repeat the process and then dry the affected area. Now mix 10% bleach with water in a spray bottle. Open all windows and doors and spraytheentireareadown.Thismust be left to stand for about five minutes and then wipe the area down with a damp rag. This should get rid of the smell once and for all. The animals will not be able to smell that they were messing there before, and so should leave the area alone.

How to tile wooden bathroom floors >> Your tile supplier will tell you what adhesive and grout you will need

ILES are clean, hygienic and water-resistant and look beautiful in a bathroom, however, notallfloorbasesaresuitablefortiles.

For example, laying tiles on wooden floors can often be problematic - here are a few things to look out for if you would like to tile your wooden bathroom floors: Ceramic tiles will suffer drastically if the floors are bouncy. They should thereforebelaidonarigidbasetoprevent any cracking.

Check for movement Check your floors and if they have movement of any sort, you need to reinforce them or choose another form of more suitable floor covering.

Carpet and vinyl flooring can be successfully laid over these kinds of floors. Ceramic tiles will suffer drastically if the floors are bouncy. They should therefore be laid on a rigid base to prevent any cracking.

Reinforcing If you are going to tile over a floor that does not feel very rigid, it is important to reinforce the floor from underneath. If you cannot get under your floor, forget about tiling it, because no matter what you do to the surface of the wooden floor, it will still move.

If you have space under your floor thenyoucangetacarpenterintoreinforce the floor with more support beams installed closer together. One canalsousesteelI-beamstoreinforce the floor - this will immediately stiffen the floor, and allow for the use of ceramic tiles.

Subflooring Oncethefloorhasbeenreinforced, remove all the old tiles and tile glue from the floor boards.

Check around the bath and basin for any water damage to the wood. If all is fine, check for any loose planks and screw them down. Ensure the screws are recessed well below the surface of the wooden floorboards so they cannot cause the tiles to crack.

Once all the boards are screwed down, use a lightweight, gypsum levelling compound to fill and level voids or low spots. This is time consuming, but will ensure that your tiles don't crack over time.

Backerboard Now you need to lay the cement backerboard over the wooden floor.

This is relatively inexpensive and can be bought at most hardware shops.

Measure your area and get the board cut to size at the shop you buy it from. The boards need to be screwed down with corrosion-resist-

Your floor should now be a level, smooth and solid surface that is perfect for laying tiles.

Fix the doors Before the tiles are laid the bathroom door needs to be removed and a section needs to be cut off the bottom, as your floor will now be considerably higher than before.

If you have any vanity or built-in cupboards in the bathroom, these doors will also need to be cut.

Tiling The tiler can now lay the tiles as he normally would.

Speak to your supplier and find out the correct adhesive and grout that you will need for laying the tiles on the wooden floor.

Do not walk on the tiled floor until all the grout has dried, to prevent the floor from cracking.

Because the wooden floor will expand and contract, all the areas around the bath, basins and along the walls, need to have silicone strips inserted in between the last row of tiles and the edge to keep it flexible and prevent cracking.

Choosing tiles A good tip to remember, is if you are still unsure whether the floor is stableenough,chooseasmallertileas this will not crack as easily if there is any movement in the floor.

Your tiles should now last as long asiftheywerelaidonconcrete.Stability is the key, so ensure that the floor is rigid and you will have no problem with your tiles laid on the wooden floor. - Property24.

GCILIMA acapella group, White Bread, seeks sponsors and support from the community of the South Coast.

The four young singers say they wouldappreciateitifthemunicipality and the community would assist themwithfundingorfindingastudio to record their demo.

The group recently performed at the Hibiscus Coast Municipality

Mayoral Awards.

They also went to the auditions for the Sing Off in Durban on Sunday which did not go so well for them as they were asked to sing other artists songs.

One of the members, Lindokuhle Mgedezi, told the Fever that they prefer writing and composing their own songs. He said they do have the talent but no studio for them to record their songs.

The group pleads to the community to support them and assist them

in which ever way is possible.

Mgedezi also told the fever that they have entered singing competitions in Durban. “We have entered a few competitions and one of them was the ushaka Marine search for stars of which we competed with other singing groups from across the province andwetookfirstplaceinthatcompetition,� said MgedeziThe young talents said they are willing to sing at shows and community events during the holiday season.

EXUS’S fourth generation RX made its debut at the 2015 New York auto show, sporting a new body, redesigned interior, longer wheelbase and the latest in safety and technology from the automaker.

The RX SUV, the best-selling model in Lexus’s 26-year history, measures 4.8m long, 1.8m wide, 1.6 tall and has a wheelbase of 2.7m. The range will be powered by 3.5-litre V6 petrol and V6 petrol-hybrid engines.

It’s expected to be launched later in Europe towards the end of 2015. Details and specifications for South Africa will be announced later.

At the front it has new a version of Lexus’ signature spindle-grille design, chromed trim and triple L-shaped LEDs. It has redesigned foglights and assertive flares to its front wings. Its blacked-out C-pillars, create what Lexus calls a “floating roof” effect, and its new 20” alloy rims can be fitted with coloured inserts.

At the rear, the all-wheel drive RX has been enhanced with L-shaped taillights that wrap around its flanks.

Inside it has new laser-cut wood ornamentation, sunroof, a large head-up display and a 31cm screen. The rear seats can be heatable and power-adjustable.

The new RX will be available (depending on market) with an upgraded 3.5-litre V6 petrol capable of 223kW, mated to a new eight-speed auto driving power to all four wheels.

A hybrid version of the 3.5 litre V6 will also be available.

The RX chassis has been strengthenedtoprovidebetterstabilityandcontrol through bends. The body structure hasbeenmadestrongerwithimproved rigidity, handling and reduced road noise.

Its Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) is designed to, Lexus says, “recognise potentially dangerous situations and make automatic adjustments to ensure the car is kept under control” when entering/exiting corners.

According to Lexus: “Most RX versions will be available with Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), which electronicallymonitorsandadaptssuspension damping and steering to secure the best handling and ride according to the driving conditions.”

The system integrates several existing Lexus active safety technologies; pre-collision system, lane departure alert and automatic high beam.

Optional safety kit includes adaptive high-beam system and blind spot monitor.

The spindle grille and lower centre section of the rear bumper have a new F Sport mesh and it has new alloy rims.

Insideitgainsanewinstrumentcluster, leather,sportssteeringwheelwithpaddle shifts. Exclusive colour options and trims are also available.

The RX F-Sport receives an active stabiliser system and AVS. The drive mode select adds a Sport S+ mode with AVS, in addition to eco, normal and Sports S. - Wheels24.

Merc pick-up coming - 60 years behind SA MERCEDES-BENZ has surprised the automotive world by announcing its intention to build “the first mid-sized pick-up from a premium manufacturer” before 2020.

ItisofspecialinteresttoSouthAfrica as this Benz bakkie is specifically aimed at our market, as well as AustraliaandsomecountriesinLatin America and Europe.

South Africa should follow the development of this new pick-up with interest but actually MercedesBenz bakkies were already built over 60 years ago – also in South Africa.

Okay,theydidnotreceivespecific model codes, but were built with the fullblessingofDaimler-BenzAGand in a South African context the basic donor chassis was exported here solely for the purpose of a bakkie conversion.

Also, while many conversions of Benzes were done over the years, the SA conversions were the first and one of few with a sustained production run in the manufacturer’s long history.

The first “bakkie” with a Merc badge was converted from the W136 170V model. It was assembled in Germany from 1946-49, 1098 were built, mostly for government services.

This platform was also the basis for vehicles converted in Argentina and South Africa, with small numbers exported to Australia, New

Zealand and the erstwhile SouthWest Africa (Namibia).

In South Africa the idea of producing a pick-up, as described by the late Fred Schnetler in his book Progress, Passion and People, the Making of Daimler Chrysler South Africa,originatedintheearly1950’s with the six original post-war independent Mercedes-Benz importers.

At that time Cargo Motors in Johannesburg, NMI in Durban, Stanley Porter in Cape Town, Haaks Garage in Pretoria, Ronnie’s Motors in East London and John Williams Motors in Bloemfontein were all selling Mercedes and other German makes.

However, they were severely limited by the by the strict allocation of car import permits (for example, in 1955 they could only sell 100 cars) while bakkies, classified as commercial vehicles, were exempt from these strict regulations.

With the assistance of engineer Heinz Grossman and MercedesBenz’s central office in Johannesburg the importers concluded a deal with Daimler-Benz AG to, instead of fully built-up cars, import so-called “chassis-cabs” or “half-cars” –a built-up vehicle without the body section behind the B pillar.

Initially some 170D/SD’s were imported in this fashion but it soon changed to the iconic W120 Mercedes 180D Ponton model.

Production ceased when Daimler-Benz, recognising the potential

of the SA market, started local assembly of the 180 sedan in East London and thereby annulled the import quota restrictions.

It’s estimated that Binz produced around450pick-ups;somewereexported to South Africa. According to Daimler-Benz files 2439 of the 180D were produced from 1955-62; 136

of the 190D body type were apparently also converted.

In total around 550 Benz 180D bakkies were on South African roads by the end of the 1950s. Not many have survived - today they have great collectors value.

His progress has been gradual and steady over the years and he says he attributes consistent support and understanding from his uncle Paepae Raopaepae for his faith and patience.

“I started writing around 2005. I started recording my work around 2009 and only started performing in 2011 however, I’ve been exposed to hip-hop from a young age by my uncle who has always understood and supported my interest in music, so eventually I was bound to end up where I am now.”

There is still much more to come from this avid writer he says.

“Right now I am working on a few international features from Africa and the United States and I’ll be dropping a lot of singles around June and July with a music video for one of those singles also in the ranks.”

Local swimmers do well in Durban

OUR Blue Ocean Aquatics swimmers participated at the Level 1 regional championships in Durban recently. Emma Kunhracedinsevenfinalsandcame home with three bronze medals for her efforts. Her medals were acquired in the 50m and 100m breaststroke and in the 100m butterfly.

Not only did she place well in her events, she also took off 17.49 seconds from her time in her swims.

Tamara Venter made it into four finals in the 50m and 200m backstroke as well as 100m and 200m

freestyle events. Her best placing was in the 200m backstroke where she came fourth. Tamara also improved on her times by 8.7 seconds.

Leah Wilkins has improved this season so much by starting the seasonasaLevel0swimmer,qualifying to Level 1 and making two finals at Level 1 regionals. She swam a personal best in the 100m backstroke in the final.

Test for young Sharks GARETH JENKINSON IT seems as though the rugby gods are out for blood and they are hitting the Sharks hardest as two more senior players face lengthy spells on the sidelines.

Pat Lambie was ruled out on Monday for six weeks after injuring a neck vertebrae during the Sharks 52-10 loss to the Crusaders last weekend. But the gods demanded another sacrificial lamb and flank Jean Deysel yesterday received what is effectively a seven-week ban for kneeing Matt Todd during the same ill-fated game.

That means the Sharks have lost four of their most senior players in just four weeks. Frans Steyn and Bismarck du Plessis still face four and five weeks on the sidelines respectively for their red-card bans, while the newest losses leave the Durban outfit thin on experienced campaigners.

Eighthman Ryan Kankowski looks set to become the fourth captain this season, after Du Plessis, Deysel and Lambie have all worn the captain’s armband. Continuity is what the Sharks need most and it’s going to be left to greener faces to make that happen.

What is most worrying is that two of those captains — well, three considering that Frans Steyn was also named as a cocaptain in the pre-season — are out due to ill-discipline.

While their actions were deplorable, they seem isolated and circumstantial which director of rugby Gary Gold was adamant about on Saturday night.

Deysel pleaded guilty yesterday to Sanzar for his red-card offence which was accepted by judicial officer Nicholas Davidson. He will take no part in the Sharks campaign until after Saturday, May 23, the day after the Sharks host the Reds in Durban — ruling him out effectively for the rest of

the season as the Sharks only have a clash against the Rebels and Stormers after that.

According to Davidson’s findings, Deysel’s offence was categorised as “midrange” which calls for an eight-week suspension. However, a number of circumstances were considered before Davidson reached his conclusion.

“IaddedanadditionalweekforDeysel’s recent offending as an aggravating factor.

He was suspended for three weeks for foul play last Super Rugby season. I then addressed mitigating personal circumstances and the discount available for an admitted breach, not that there was any defence for his actions,” Davidson’s findings read.

“Deysel, to his credit, did not seek to minimisehisactions.Hesaidhewasdeeply ashamedandthathisactionswereagainst everything he stands for, despite his earlier breaches.

“He could only refer to his emotional and irrational response when frustrated at the breakdown, and he asked himself why he acted in such an extreme manner.”

There seems to have been an off-thefield issue that Deysel had also been dealing with that ended up lessening his sentence.

“After my preliminary considerations, I was advised of an off-field mitigating circumstance which may in rare circumstances be brought to account under Regulation 17.

“In this case, there are truly exceptional circumstances associated with the health of his immediate family which must bear on his state of mind, and go some way to explain his irrational actions. This is not an excuse but a basis to exercise some small leniency in the sanction applied.

mitigating factors. I took into account that the Sharks have a bye in Round 11, in effect making this a six-match sanction. Therefore, the player is suspended from all forms of rugby up to and including Saturday, May 23, 2015.”

A positive is the Sharks have all this newsearlythisweekandcansetaboutpreparing for the Lions with the hand they have been dealt.

If fringe players in the squad were complaining about minimal opportunities, they now have their chance to prove their worth.

Fred Zeilinga is set to start at flyhalf until Lambie’s return. The young pivot has performed fairly well in the two short cameos he’s had off the bench this season.

“It’s exciting for a young man like Fred.

Pat is a big player for us, he was an outstanding captain while Bismarck has been out, he’s a Springbok and his value in the team is massive,” Sharks winger Odwa Ndungane said yesterday.

“But in saying that we’ve got a good squad, we’ve got youngsters like Fred who’s also played a few games – it’s not like he’s new in the system. He knows what is expected of him and he’s got everyone’s backing.”

PORTWENI Sport Academy offers sport coaching and training during school holidays.

This need was initially felt by rugby-playing schools only, but with the introduction of other sports the need moved to sporting codes at school and club level.

Throughout the holidays the academy hosted various schools for the Easter season.

On Thursday the Fever visited Hoërskool Suid-Natal where teams held training sessions.

Randfontein High School’s first hockey team boys were being trained by a Sportweni coach who conducted a tactical training session, teaching them how to pass the ball, attack and defend.

Also practising for a tournament on Saturday was Bloemfontein’s President Steyn High School’s netball team.
