Intheaftermath,asBurrylayon the ground, Nyawose approached the elder Stander and repeatedly asked how long it would take before he could leave the scene as he was in a hurry to return to his job.

“While we were still attending to the injured man and also making phone calls, the taxi driver went to the father and asked how long the whole thing would take.

He asked if he could go because he was in a hurry and that he was at work.

“Emotions were high, and the father of the deceased [man] got angryandstartedyellingatthetaxi man. The driver commented that he had done nothing wrong. He was insensitive and he gestured at us,” said Stergiopoulos.

OUTHPORT police are investigating a possible link where two murders, involving two SAPS employees, occurred on Monday in Southport.

In the first case, Jabu Cele (40), an administration clerk working at crime intelligence in Port Shepstone, was found with multiple gunshot wounds to her body at Madlala Location near Southport.

Later than morning, SAPS attended to another scene where a police officer allegedly killed his wife and two children before turning the firearm on himself. Police received the first murder report at about 2am.

“A case of murder was opened at the Southport Police Station,” said police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane.

At about 7.30am, members of the Southport PoliceStationbecamesuspiciousafterWarrant OfficerLindaShange(49)failedtoreportforduty and calls to his phone went unanswered.

been shot and killed in the house,” said Zwane.

They were identified as Fikile Shange (47) and her two sons Snakekelo (10) and Snakhokonke (15). Shange was in the house and had gunshot wounds to his body, but was still alive with his service pistol lying next to him.

He died on the way to hospital.

“It is alleged that the police officer had an argument with his family and allegedly shot and killed them before turning the gun on himself,” said Zwane.

Three counts of murder and an inquest docket was opened at Southport Police Station for further investigation.

“The recovered firearm will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if it was used in the killing of his family and the admin clerk who had been shot earlier that day,” he added.

Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni was shocked when she learnt that five people had been found dead in Southport in the early hours of 21 October.

“I extend my condolences to the relatives and will personally visit the effected families and pay my respects. I have instructed members of our employee health and wellness [department] to provide immediate assistance to the relatives,” she said.

Njabulo Nyawose (24) was charged with culpable homicide and appeared for trial at Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Monday before magistrate Char­ maine Barnard. State prosecutor Christelle Rossouw called Andries Josh Fourie to the stand.

He testified that he was travel­ ling south in his car at the time of the accident and had witnessed Stander slide under the left rear side of the taxi.

“The cyclist [Stander] had just ridden past me and five seconds later I heard a bang. I looked into my rear­view mirror and saw the cyclist slide under the taxi. The left rear wheel went over him,” said Fourie.

At this time Stander’s mother Mandie put her head down trying to hold back tears.

The witness said he then made a U­turn and rushed over to Stander.

“I’m not a doctor but there were no signs of life. He sustained bad head injuries,” he said. He said Stander’s helmet came off his head and landed about 15 metres away from the scene.

He added that an ambulance arrived 25 minutes later, and he then left.

During cross examination Fou­ rie told the accused’s attorney, Xo­ lile Nsthulana, that the collision occurred “five to 10 seconds after the cyclist rode past” him.

Nsthulana said Fourie did not

give a statement or his details to SAPS at the time of the accident and left. Fourie responded that he had contacted family members who came to the scene.

“I assume they [witnesses’s family] must have told police of­ ficers after I left that I was one of the first people on scene,” he said.

Warrant Officer Hendrik Ludick from the SAPS K9 Unit in Port Shepstone, a member of the acci­ dent response unit and a vehicle examiner, said he tested the mini­ bus taxi that Nyawose was driving and found it to be in roadworthy condition. He said he also “had a look at the bike”, but had not com­ piled an official report on its road worthiness.

“As far as I know, the bicycle was supposed to be sent to Preto­ ria for testing. but it wasn’t,” said Hendrick.

He said the bicycle was in good condition.

Forensic pathologist Dr Lindani Wilson Nyawose testifiedthatBurryhadsustained multiple minor injuries to the surfaces of his head, neck and chest.

“His right lung was bruised

and the joint in the upper part of the spine, which controls the movement of the head, was fractured. His spinal cord was severed, but not entirely.

“The deceased’s external injuries were too superficial, but his organs were filled with blood so he suffered internal

bleeding.”

Stander (25) was returning from a training ride when he was hit by the minibus taxi.

He died at the scene of the accident.

The trial resumes on November 28 and 29 for further testimony.

“I obeyed this instruction as the one man had a pistol. I was scared. When they left, I went to a house and used the telephone. I then reported the matter to the Gamalakhe Police Station,” he said.

Although the victim received confirmation of the case being reported within three hours, he said he was unhappy with the “don’t care attitude” of the police officers.

“I asked them [police] to come with me to the area where I was robbed because the robbers had fled on foot and the cops may have been able to catch them, but nobody was interested,” he said.

According to the victim, the alleged robbers had not been wearing gloves.

“The vehicle was not dusted for fingerprints. I’m disappointed with the police,” he said.

Police spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka said a case of robbery with aggravating circumstances has been opened.

“I cannot comment further as the case is being transferred from Gamalakhe to Port Shepstone, which is another cluster,” he said.

A 64-YEAR-OLD man was robbed at gunpoint in Shelly Beach on Monday morning.

He had parked 30 metres away from a bank near a shopping centre and was on his way to make a bank deposit when two men approached him and ordered him to “drive”.

The victim’s daughter posted on the Hibiscus Coast SA Crime Alert Facebook page, asking anyone who saw the incident to come forward.

“I am so traumatised. One man got into the front [of the car] and held a gun to my head while I was still in the parking lot, and told me to drive. The other got into the back seat. This happened just as I was about to alight from the vehicle,” he said.

The man, who does not want to be named, said he drove towards a fresh produce store when one of them shouted saying he was going the wrong way.

“I quickly swerved into another street, and later found out we were going to Gamalakhe,” he said.

He said the men ducked down in the vehicle while he drove, only looking up from time to time to check if he was following their directions.

He said the man in front opened the cubby hole and took the cash.

“They were constantly talking and when they saw the cash they laughed,” he said.

He was then told to stop on a dirt road a few metres from Gamalakhe.

“They took the keys, my wallet, watch and the cash. They dumped the keys in a certain area, which I could see, and told me to only get them once they were out of sight,” he said.

HE Ugu District Municipality manager, DD Naidoo, is alarmed and concerned about reports that he failed to respond to the deadline regarding the recent South African Municipal Worker’s Union (Samwu) grievances as reportedinlastweek’sFevertitled“Municipal manager fails response deadline”.

Naidoo visited the Fever this week to set the record straight.

A statement issued by Naidoo reads: “On Thursday, 3 October, about 120 out of 890 Ugu employees embarked on an illegal work stoppage and gathered outside the Conner Street office. They requested to be addressedbythemunicipalmanager, who responded notwithstanding.

They howled, heckled and taunted in the most disrespectful manner.

“A memorandum was handed to the municipal manager, wherein staff wanted immediate responses. The municipal manager advised that a response in writing will be forwarded to theunion,Samwu,withinsevendays.

“Samwu requested permission to hold a general meeting with its members on Friday, 11 October at 2pm.

This request was granted as it was in keeping with the Organisational

“On Friday 11 October, Ugu employees once again, led by Samwu, abandoned their general meeting and gathered outside the Ugu offices demanding to be addressed by the municipal manager as they were not happy with the responses to their grievances. This was not possible as the municipal manager was in Durban at a meeting.

“On Monday 14 October Ugu employees returned to the Connor Street offices and once again demanded to meet with the Ugu municipal manager.

“The management committee met and resolved that given this was an illegal work stoppage and gathering and further, due to the unbecoming conduct of employees on Tuesday, 3 October, the municipal manager will

not address employees in the street and must follow due process for such engagements.”

The municipal manager showed the Fever a list of written grievances given to him by Samwu and his written response which was timeously given as per signed-off dates as correspondence shows, which was seen by the Fever.

Incorrect information as had been

given in the previous Fever, hurt his integrity, he said.

“I kept to my agreement, but I do not have to respond to a public meeting which is irregular and unlawful and then be portrayed as failing in my duty,” said DD Naidoo.

DD Naidoo said to the Fever that by some of his actions, like cutting overtime work, he expected to be unpopular, but had no choice.

Njwambe said Statistics SA is a government department accountable to the minister in the presidency responsible for the planning commission.

Njwambe explained that statistics help the government plan its intervention to improve programmes aimed at responding to service delivery issues.

“Stats SA produces statistical information to inform stakeholders planning, policy formulation, reporting, monitoring, evaluation and decision-making.Wehaveanumberprogrammes that we run throughout Ugu, hence we appeal to residents to welcome our teams as they visit

them.

“Stats SA collets data in large-scale surveys, censusesandregisters,processes,analysesand disseminates it to the users. In 2011, Stats SA conducted census 2011 and the results showed that the Ugu district has a population of about 722 484 which amounts to seven percent of the KwaZulu-Natal population. The Ugu population increased from 704 030 to 722 484.

“The Umzumbe Municipality has 160 975 people which showed a decline from 193 768 in 2001.TheUmuziwabantuMunicipalitypopulation has increased from 92 327 to 96 556. The Ezinqoleni Municipality population has dropped from 54 775 to 52 540. The Hibiscus

With 151 bikers, organisers’ expectations were exceeded.

Jacobus “Jake” Putter (33) and Douw van der Walt (33) were acquitted on charges of murder and assault with intent to do grevious bodily harm while the third accused, Carel Volschenk (49), was acquitted on assault with intent to do grevious bodily harm. Volschenk only faced that one charge.

In September the fourth accused, Petrus Opperman (47), pleaded guilty to assault with intent to do grevious bodliy harm. He was asked to pay a R10 000 fine or serve three years’ imprisonment, half of which was suspended for five years.

MM kept to ‘grievance’ deadline THE Fever apologises to the Ugu Municipal Manager DD Naidoo for portraying the in­ correct perception that he did not respond to the South African Municipal Worker’s Union (Samwu) seven­day deadline of having their grievances addressed within this time line. In the true form of being reli­ able and acting with the integrity the MM is known for, Mr Naidoo did respond to Samwu’swithinitsdeadline,butinwriting.

What he did not do was to jump into their illegal work stoppage, but answered their questions fully and timeously.

The report of the 64­year­old man who was robbed at gunpoint in Shelly Beach this week while going to the bank is parti­ cularly disturbing (see page 3).

Dear Fever, ON Saturday while driving, I saw a man in Uvongo on a motorcycle with two little Jack Russells. He fell off the motorcycle and was too intoxicated to get on it again. When passing that way an hour later, he was still sitting or sleeping next to the road with the two dogs at his side. He was not hurt as people investigated.

Fireworks ban nothing to do with racism Dear Fever, FIREWORKS were banned in Port Edward two years ago by the then committee of the ratepayers’ association.

I don’t remember any fuss being made of this, as, although much canvassingwasdonearoundthetownas well as large signs being erected, it made not the slightest bit of

difference to the Hindu community or the residents of Port Edward.

There is an Hibiscus Coast Municipality by-law prohibiting the use of fireworks as well as the sale of fireworks without the correct permit being arranged from the police.

With regard to stocking and selling of fireworks, the law is most stringent regarding the safety of the

People have to tranquillise their pets priortotheonslaughtofloudbangsandfire­ works, not to mention the birds, buck and the like that are equally traumatised.

If you think for one minute that fireworks and loud bangs will build bridges between communities, you are sadly mistaken.

As a postscript — I am considering sending my CV for the position of a bus driver should the Ugu Municipality expand its fleet of buses.

Although I do not have a bus driver’s licence for buses without passen­ gers, I have been in possession of an fish­ ing licence since 2006, and I think this job could be very satisfactory.

I was making notes at the meeting about what was being said when I was subjected to a two-pronged and prolonged personal attack by the Ugu mayor, Cllr Gumede, and the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee, Cllr Shushu, whotookitinturnstocastigate,insultandbelittle me in the presence of the municipal manager and officials present.

I then took this matter up with Cllr S. Cele the Speaker and asked him to carry out an investigation. To this day I have had no response from the Speaker whose job it is to protect his councillors from this form of attack.

In conclusion I think that Olliver Ransome has a problem with noughts. The last time I checked Ugu’s budget it was more like a billion rands than a trillion rands.

THE Port Shepstone Regional Hospital held its Infection Control Campaign last week and focusedoneducationandthemonitoringofinfection control practices in the hospital.

The purpose was to ensure strict infection control practices as an essential manner for reducing hospital-acquired infections.

Public relations officer Phumza Morai said as part of this campaign various units in the hospital presented and showcased their infection control and prevention measures.

“An infection control trophy was won by

ward 3 for achieving 100% compliance in hand-washing practice in 2013. The runnersup for the hand-washing award were the labour ward staff in second position. The dropin centre came third.

“The other departments such as ward 5, post-natal and gynaecological, ward 2, C ward, A ward, the specialist outpatient department, sterilising and distribution unit and therapies were awarded with certificates of participation and active involvement during the Infection Control Week,” said Morai.

Those who attended the day completed a quiz which was entered in a lucky draw whichwere won by different staff categories.

Dear Fever, I REFER to the letter from Olliver Ransome in the paper last week.

I believe that it is unfair to lump all the councillors together in apportioning blame for the district council’s bankruptcy.

As far back as 29 September 2011, the DA hadaletterpublishedinthelocalpressdrawing attention to the insolvency of the district council. All of the information and figures quoted in the letter were lifted straight out of Ugu’s Annual Financial Statements for the year ending 30 June 2011.

In December of the same year I was personally served with a notice by the municipal manager informing me that I had allegedly breached the code of conduct for councillors by making libelous statements as well as discrediting the municipality in such a way that the credibilityandintegrityofthemunicipalitywas compromised.

A special investigation committee, chaired by the mayor, Cllr NH Gumede, had been appointed to carry out the investigation, and I was given seven days to prepare my defence which Idid,anddulyrebuttedtheallegationstogether with supporting documents. The matter rested until May 2012 when I was given access to the minutes of the in-committee meetings of coun-

FTER showing off their cooking skills and winning the regional title in the Feedem Pitseng Culinary competition recently, chefs at the Bon Vivant Restaurant were sent to Cape Town for the competition finals where they won second place.

Bon Vivant is situated in the Mbango Valley Retirement Village in Oslo Beach and is managed by a contract catering company, Feedem Pit-

seng. The culinary competition is an internal competition only open to chefs within the Feedem Pitseng group.

“The theme had to do with all things natural and this was well received in our presentation by the judges,” said chef Sanjeev Sewnarayan. Sewnarayan and his team, comprising Gcobisa Madolo and Tracey Lee-Williams, went all out to wow the judges.

They decorated their table in a green and hessian theme complete with wooden embelishments, boxes

and place mats. The centre piece was an old-fashioned scale which complimentedthesetting. Theteam served a deconstructed carpaccio (a dish of raw meat or fish, thinly sliced or pounded thin) for the starter, spiced tuna for mains and finished with a chocolate ginger pecan-crusted blueberry torte.

“We took first place for team spirit which is no surprise because we work well together,” said Sewnarayan. “We are really excited about this achievement and will be back with a bang next year,” he said.

Hospice’s wonderful ambassador

ALAMA Asman of Gamalakhe tells her story of her journey with breast cancer.

In November 2009, Asman discovered a lump in her right breast after a random self­examination. Be­ ing fairly familiar with her body and knowing that this lump was alien, she made her way to the clinic, which in turn referred her to Murchison Hospital for tests. The doctorsdiscussedtheoptionswithheranditwasdecid­ ed that Asman had to undergo surgery to remove the lump for a biopsy.

Being a mother of four, Asman knew that she need­ ed to take this road less travelled and often feared the worst as early detection is key in the fight against can­ cer.Whatevertheodds,Asmanwasgoingtofaceithead on, not only for her children’s sake but for her as a wom­ an, a mother, a daughter and a sister. Her life was still so young and she was not ready to be defeated by this often misunderstood disease.

The operation revealed that the lump was cancer­ ous,andalsorevealedanotherlumpinthesamebreast.

After a biopsy she was diagnosed with cancer of the rightbreast.Anaggressivecourseofchemotherapywas started and knowing that treatment is never easy, was referred by her doctors to join the Hospice programme.

She embraced our integrated community home­based care teams with every visit and leaned on the mobile teams for the support and home­based care she would

need in the coming months. This year the battle proved too great and on 22 September Asman’s right breast wasremovedastheonlyalternativetopreventthecan­ cer from spreading.

Today, this remarkable woman of strength wel­ comed us into her home with a huge smile on her face.

She is no less of a woman today than she was before her journey with breast cancer. She continues to live with the same passion and zest for life as she did a few years ago and is only too pleased with the path she has taken to get to this point. Her attitude towards life is a humbling experience considering that she is a woman with few means who earns a living by running a small day­care business from home. She cares for 15 children and even though she has only the basics to offer, she is able to provide the warmth and love they need while their parents are away.

Asman’s message to all who walk this life is that early detection is critical and her only regret is that if she had done regular breast examinations she may have had a very different result today.

“I was not scared. I was ready to fight for my children and for me,” says Asman. She is due for a follow­up examination on 28 October and we, the South Coast Hospice community, assure her and her family that we will be there to offer all the support she needs. John Richard Johnson, also known as “Riek”, has owned many a butchery over the years. Growing up in Rustenburg, Riek previously owned three butcheries before moving his family to the coast.

“I love working with meat, I love butcheries,” Riek says. Pursuing his dream of owning a butchery on the coast Riek, his wife Isabel, daughter Valerie and son-inlaw Jurie Smit, opened Margate Butchery, next to FNB. “Having my family working together is such a pleasure and we share common goals — to keep customers happy and sell only the freshest meat.”

Use of Fireworks as per the New Amended Explosives Act

Fireworks that are used as trick devices, booby traps, or as a joke; Hand-held fireworks other than Christmas crackers, novelty matches and sparklers; Fireworks exploding violently such as firecrackers containing chlorate or metal powders, including but not limited to “Bombs” and “Indian Kings”; Table bombs and table rockets; Fireworks with fuses that burn less than three seconds or longer than eight seconds after lighting the fuse; Fireworks with electric initiation or their own means of ignition such as match crackers; Fireworks not marked in accordance with these Regulations.

Fireworks in Class 1.4G as provided for in the UN Default Fireworks Classification Table, listed in Annexure “K”; Amorces and toy pistol caps, consisting of plastic or paper caps in shells, strips, rolls or individual caps where the pyrotechnic composition may not exceed 5,0 grams per 1 000 caps for paper caps, and 6,5 grams per 1 000 caps in the case of plastic caps; and Christmas crackers consisting of an over wrapped cracker containing a pull-type cracker or cracker snap, which may not contain more than 1,6 milligrams of friction-sensitive pyrotechnic composition.

Limitations on the use of fireworks are as follows: (1) (2)

No person may allow any person under the age of 18 years to acquire, transport, keep, handle or use consumer fireworks except under the direct supervision of a person 18 years and older.

No person may use consumer fireworks — (a) within 1 000 metres from any airport, explosives manufacturing site or workplace, fuel depot, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) depot, gasometer, hospital, old age home or home caring for the aged and frail; (b) within 500 metres from any industrial premises, kennels, any filling station or retail premises where flammable gas containers are used, stored or filled; (c) within 500 metres from a South African Police Service Community Service Centre; (d) in any building, or public thoroughfare; or (e) at any public place unless written permission has been obtained from the local authority.

No person issued with a permit issued in terms of section 15 of the Act, may use consumer fireworks after 23:00.

Paragraph (3) above may not prohibit the use of fireworks during a period determined by the Minister.

In this Regulation a “period determined by the Minister”, means a period — (a) beginning at 16:00 on the first day of the Chinese New Year and ending at 00:30 of the following day; (b) beginning at 16:00 on each day of Diwali and ending at 00:30 of the following days; (c) beginning at 16:00 on 31 December and ending at 00:30 of the following day.

No person may operate a public display of fireworks on any premises without the written permission of an inspector.

The permission referred to in paragraph (4) above must stipulate the conditions to be complied with.

No person may keep or allow more than 40 kilograms gross mass of consumer fireworks on any premises for private use.

The ACT does not anymore accommodate Guy Fawkes day.

Any person who contravenes or fails to comply with the provisions of any other Regulation shall, upon conviction be liable to a fine or imprisonment of five years or to both such fine and imprisonment.

Hibiscus Coast Municipality subscribes to the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Act (BBBEEA), Act 53 of 2003, Preferential Procurement Policy Framework Act, 2000 (Act No 5 of 2000). The 80/20 preference point system shall be applicable during the evaluation and adjudication of this tender proposal.

The procedure for evaluation of responsive tender offers will be a Method 4: Financial Offer, Preferences and Quality (functionality). Evaluation of tenders will be done in two stages. Firstly, eligibility and quality (functionality) will be assessed: whereafter tenders with a minimum of 60 points will be evaluated using the 80/20 Preference Point System for Financial Offer and Preference. The Preferential Procurement Policy Framework Act (PPPFA) applies to this tender.

Tenders are hereby invited for the upgrading of bulk water supply system to increase water pressures in Mtentweni township in Port Shepstone. The scope of work summarily involves the upgrading of certain water pipe lines with associated fire hydrants and the provision of a water tower with a capacity of 54.5 kL within Hibiscus Coast Municipality.

The minimum specifications are detailed in the Tender Document. Tenderers should be registered and have a CIDB contractor grading designation of 4CE or higher and appropriate experience in water reticulation and elevated steel tank construction. The works shall be completed within 16 weeks. Assisi bridges need

AMAGED bridges to the Assisi Ugu Water Treatment Plant is cause for concern says local resident Paul Reynolds.

Reynolds said the approaches to three bridges that were washed away on the road to the plant have made driving very difficult.

“The bridges have been like this for more than six months. It is not a major job to fill in the gravel that has washed away and make them passable again,” said Reynolds.

He said that is not only normal vehicles that are affected, but also Ugu vehicles that need to get to the Assisi Water Treatment Plant.

“Currently they [Ugu vehicle drivers] drive through the river beds around these bridges.

When it rains the vehicles take a detour of an extra 40 kilometres to get there as they cannot drive through the river. Ugu cannot afford this crumbling infrastructure in its current financially stressed time. Who is responsible for repairing this road? Let’s help Ugu in this re-

spect,” said Reynolds.

The Fever forwarded the photos of the damaged bridges to the Ugu District Municipality spokesperson Sipho Khuzwayo for comment, but no response has been received at the time of going to press.

Are international visitors worth it?

ESTINATION marketing to the inter­ national segments and niches can be a very expensive exercise and at timestourismpractitionersask,“isitworth the effort and cost when most of our cus­ tomers are South African?”

There is some merit in such a comment however, we do need to recognise that visitors, say from the United Kingdom and Europe, generally have a higher spend per capita per day and as such South Africa’s foreign tourism revenue earnings (stated

by Tourism KwaZulu­Natal for 2011 as R71 billion) far exceeds the corresponding figure for domestic tourism, which was in­ dicated at R20.3 billion.

The long­haul visitor also tends to stay in a destination for long periods and has a propensity to use a broader variety of services while here. Their interests are of­ ten wider than many South Africans, par­ ticularly in terms of cultural heritage and nature­based experiences. These explora­ tory habits take them to many areas we

could consider isolated and too rural. This travel characteristic certainly sustains many livelihoods in some of our poorer areas.

The emersion and first­hand seeing of communities in tourism has in some in­ stances led to what is termed “Philan­ thropic Tourism” whereby tourists become benefactors for a project or non­govern­ ment organisation’s social programmes.

With the rand exchange rate being fa­ vourable for overseas visitors, holiday and

leisure destinations like the Greater South Coastdocometotheforeasrealvalue­for­ money options. Often when overseas visi­ tors enjoy a particular area, they have been known to invest in properties as perma­ nent or holiday homes.

I have noted a great number of ex­pats from all over the world living here and in many cases the interest was pricked from a holiday to our shores.

Are overseas visitors worth it? You bet they are, and for that reason Ugu South

DEVON Flanagan of Oribi Gorge and his partner Jurie Pohl will undertake a daunt­ ing expedition of Lesotho in November to raise awareness and funding for the Spirit of Adventure Leadership Trust (SALT).

The duo will be transecting the whole of Lesotho, from the north to the south, hugging the Senqu River from its source in the Mnweni region of the Drakensberg to the southern border where the Senqu changes its name to the Orange River.

Flanagan looking to conquer Lesotho for a good cause They will run the first 100km and will be supplied with kayaks and support equipment in Mokhotlong, from where they will paddle 434km to the southern border. If the water levels are too low to paddle the river, they will run the 520km on foot.

“We are undertaking a project that par­ allels what SALT is equipped to do. It is not an easy feat, but neither is SALT’s mission and we are excited and honoured to be un­ dertaking this expedition for as noble an organisation as SALT,“ said Flanagan.

SALT is a non­profit organisation that

aims to provide a sustainable opportunity for all youth in KwaZulu­Natal to receive leadership training. The trust delivers world­class leadership theory ­ that previ­ ously could only be afforded by the more affluent educational institutions ­ into ru­ ral and previously disadvantaged educa­ tional establishments.

Through well trained and experienced personnel, SALT then uses multiple differ­ ent practical objectives and activities to further concrete the theory and make it more applicable and relative to the stu­ dents.

OUTH Coast riders finished the South African National Enduro Championship on a high in Matatiele on Saturday.

Rocky hills, dry riverbeds and grasslands served as the last battlefield where the championships and titlesforthe2013seasonweredecided and it was the youth who ruled at the Matatiele WFO National Enduro as scholars Blake Gutzeit (Sherco Racing) of Oslo Beach and Travis Teasdale (Brother Broadlink KTM) finished on the overall podium of this toughbutenjoyablefinalroundofthe national championship.

At 17 years old, Paddock’s Wade Young (Husaberg Alfie Cox Racing) is likelythefirstscholartowinanational enduro title as he clinched the overall title for 2013 as well as the E2 (200cc) Championship title.

He had to settle for 10th place overall and third in E2 in Matatiele after he crashed during the fifth of 10 Special Stages, injuring himself and

damaging his bike.

The talented teenager will, however, be fit to defend his Roof of Africa title.

New E1 (Open Class) champion Altus de Wet (Husqvarna Racing) claimedhissecondracevictoryofthe season and fifth successive E1 victory to secure his second place on the overall standings after a tough 2013 season in which he had to fight from the back due to a small mechanical issue preventing him from finishing the season opener.

De Wet posted the fastest times at three of the special timed stages while his time for Special Stage Nine was identical to that of Gutzeit, who made a little history by finishing second overall and second in E1. There were70points(seconds)betweenDe Wet and 18-year-old Gutzeit.

Port Edward Bass Classic coming up THE Port Edward Bass Classic presented by the South Coast Bass Association (SCBA) will be held on private farm dams on 9 and 10 November.

Last year’s inaugural classic was met with great enthusiasm, which prompted the SCBA to continue with this initiative. The De Wet twins won the women’s division in 2012 and caused double trouble when they each weighed a bass of the same weight.

He had to settle for second place for the day behind his teammate, Paddock rider Kyle Flanagan, who won this class for the second time this year. Paul Simon (Rocket Racing KTM) completed the podium.

Local youngsters who also compete in the Junior National Off-Road Championship, Dylan Barker (CriterionYamahaPortableShade)ofKokstad and Henco Botha (Pa Ma Racing Kawasaki) of Matatiele, finished fourth and fifth respectively.

ADDOCK Polocrosse Club players ended the season on a positive note at the Junior Classic that took place in Mooi River recently.

The club sent several juniors to the event who played from the A Division to Sven Bunge in the Pee Wee Division. The classic was very wellrepresentedwith90juniorplayersfromall corners of the country participating in the season-ending event, where fine polocrosse was coached and played.

Players enjoyed two days of top-notch coachingandteambuildingfromSouthAfrican coaches and players prior to the games, which were played over two days.

Players were drafted into different teams in different divisions, thus Paddock didn’t play as a team.

A partnership consisting of one player from each of the three divisions was also drawn and these were the teams for the tournament. Each division had a winner, and the overall partnership scores determined the partnership winners.

Paddock pair Amber and Paige Pretorius

played key roles for a formidable Rhinos team, who boasted seven national players in their team of eight. With the Paddock sisters in top form, the Rhinos - sponsored by Rhino Truck Sales, Abantu Capital Holdings and Criss Cross Security - won all three of their A Division games, beating Branson 31-21, Russel James 32-14 and Du Pont 31-20 in the final to be crowned Junior Classic champions.

The star duo and their Paddock clubmate Jessica Heaver, who was part of the C Divisionwinning Shaw side, were the partnership winners. Kenan Classen was a member of the B Division-winning Gilson team, Kyla Biggs and Bunge played for B Division team Engen Greytown, Pierre Scheepers played for B Division teamSandwithandLaraBouverierepresented C Division runners-up Armitage.

Paddock players also played in the recent Richmond family tournament, where several teams made up of family members or ‘adopted’ families faced off. Kyla Biggs, Jason Biggs and Kennedy Stone won their division, while Kyla Biggs and her horse were named the most improved rider and horse of their division.

Young guns shine for SKZN XI TWOyoungstarsemergedfortheSouthernKwaZulu­ Natal XI in their Round Four 50­Over Premier League clash against Uthangulu District in Empangeni on Sunday.

Although they suffered a 60­run loss, the per­ formances of schoolboys Ross Theron and Yogeshan Pillay showed Southern KwaZulu­Natal have ade­

quate depth to remain competitive in their maiden Premier League season.

Southcity Christian College’s Theron took the gloves in his debut match and produced a near fault­ less performance with two stumpings, a run out and a run out assist. Port Shepstone High School’s Pillay, in turn, showed impressive maturity, bowling well against the senior Premier League batsmen and tak­ ing two wickets for 42 runs in 10 overs. He also dis­ played potential with his batting capabilities before being bowled for 11.

The hosts batted first and finished on 205/9 after someeconomicalbowlingbythevisitors.GarethBish­ op took two for 12 in five overs and captain Raja Kazi two for 38 in 10 overs, while Niko Potgieter conceded just 20 runs in his 10 overs.

The top order did well to keep Southern KwaZulu­ Natal in the running with dark clouds rolling in. The rain eventually started to fall and with the visitors be­ hind with their run rate, they had no choice but to go for broke.

Bishop top­scored with 29 and the in­form Lionel Jali scored 26, however, Southern KwaZulu­Natal lost too many wickets and were ultimately bowled out for 145.

Southern KwaZulu­Natal will host DHS Rhythm at Port Shepstone Country Club on Sunday with the ac­ tion getting underway at 9am.

Meanwhile, Round Three of the Southern Natal Clubs CricketTwenty20tournamentwasrainedoutandwill be played at a later stage.
