Dear Guests, Welcome to the 5th Annual Silicon Valley Wine Auction. Thank you for joining us for an evening of celebration, wine and food supporting transformative and innovative education programs. At this year’s Auction we invite you to THINK about education in a way that you may have never thought of before. First we would like you to THINK of yourself as a life-long learner that is a part of a community of leaders from the education, business, philanthropic, nonprofit, winegrowers, civic and grassroots communities, guided by a transformational vision for the future of education that is individualized and learner-led. THINK about the impact of quality education and the power of working together to transform anachronistic systems of learning into ones that are innovative and transformative for the future of our children. All funds raised will benefit the Oxford Day Academy’s (ODA) new teacher training program, the Oxford Teacher Academy (OTA) and the Silicon Valley Education Foundation (SVEF), Elevate Math program. These programs provide documented results with learner-led educational programs serving underprivileged students throughout Silicon Valley. We’re honored that you chose to join us, and hope you have a wonderful evening. Warmest regards, Mark Vernon President, Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Education Foundation CEO, Ridge Vineyards Jim Cargill President, Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association (SCMWA) Winemaker/COO, House Family Vineyards

Eden Estate Wines

Eden Estate Wines is a family-owned winery located in the heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains, just minutes from Saratoga, California. Silicon Valley veteran and longtime Apple executive John Couch has teamed up with esteemed viticulturist and winemaker Bill Brosseau to create limited-production Cabernet Sauvignon wines – all from organically grown fruit, harvested by hand, and bottled onsite. For more information contact us at: www.edenestatewines.com

We invite you to come and explore! The Santa Cruz Mountains wine region is nestled in one of the most unique and natural environments in the world. With its mountainous terrain, marine and valley influences, varied micro-climates and diverse soils, the Santa Cruz Mountains offer our vintners the ideal place to grow high quality grapes and to produce some of the world’s most distinct terroir driven wines. The Santa Cruz Mountains Appellation encompasses more than 850 square miles from San Francisco down the Peninsula to Silicon Valley and Gilroy – over to Watsonville, Monterey Bay and back up through Santa Cruz to Half Moon Bay.

Fact:

Our highest, well-known vineyard is at 2700’.

Fact:

The Santa Cruz Mountains was the first American Viticulture Area (AVA) to use the European model of climatological and geophysical aspects instead of political boundaries.

Fact:

In the judgment of Paris – 1976 a blind tasting proved that California wines could equal and even surpass the great French wines. Out of twelve wines chosen to represent California, two were from the Santa Cruz Mountains – Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello Cabernet and David Bruce Winery Chardonnay. scmwa.com

t h e si l ic on v al le y W i n e A u c tio n All contributions directly impact education in our community by providing essential support to local students and educators. There are several ways in which your support helps improve education in Silicon Valley.

COUNTING ON SUCCESS e le vate ( Math) S i l i co n va l l e y e d u cat ion f oun dat ion This results-driven program brings new math understanding and confidence to students who’ve been drowning in math class. Your gift gets results: A 2015 study found Elevate [Math] to have 2x the impact as compared to other math intervention programs. Not only does the curriculum, established by the Silicon Valley Education Foundation (SVEF), sharpen skills, decrease math anxiety, and build positive mindsets, it exposes 3rd-10th grade students from low-income families to careers that require and reward math skills.

RURAL TEACHERS FOR THE 21st CENTURY OXF ORD te ach e r s ACA D EM Y Help scale innovations piloted at Oxford Day Academy to other schools in underserved communities across the US, particularly those in forgotten rural communities. Roughly the same number of students are in urban as in rural schools, and they face many of the same barriers to academic success; despite this, roughly 90% of education reform funding has flowed into urban communities. The Oxford Teachers Academy catalyzes rural education reform by training rural residents in the best practices developed at Oxford Teachers Academy as they become credentialed, lifelong teachers for their local community.

Six Liter bottle of Monte Bello Donated by Ridge Vineyards

6 Lit e r of 201 1 Mont e Be llo, R idge Vine yards - P ure Ve lvet The cool grape growing season of 2011 turned out to be a pristine vintage of Monte Bello, made from cabernet (88 percent) grown on a limestone-inflected ridge high above Silicon Valley. Following an early October storm, the team at Ridge let the fruit recover for two weeks before picking, and were more aggressive in their extraction, drawing as much color and structure from the delicate fruit. At first breath, the aromas are of oak, anise, wood smoke, cedar bark, and cinnamon. At first sip, the wine grows gradually toward bright fruit finishing long of floral aromas and a tang of tiny, concentrated black currants. With a day of air, the tannins turn to velvet, allowing acidity to take the lead and brighten the wine’s savory, tones of wet wood and forest mushrooms. “... for half a century, Ridge has made one of California’s greatest cabernet sauvignons, Monte Bello, in a remarkably consistent style independent of the twists and turns of fashion.” — Eric Asimov, NY Times
