Bringing music to life

2022 2023
mcgill.ca/music 555 Sherbrooke Street West Montreal, Quebec, Canada @schulichmusic Instagram | Facebook | Youtube You wait in anticipation. Instruments raise. Hands lift. Eyes meet. Inhale. Release. Music sounds. You’re transported. 2022 2023 season You present your ticket. You find your seat. The hall grows dim. Slowly the lights come up on stage. Musicians enter. Applause. Then silence.

It’s the thrill of discovering something new and the joy of hearing a long-loved masterpiece. It’s the energy of playing in an ensemble and the fun of improvising a solo. It’s watching masters at their craft and up-and-coming talents hone their skills. It’s unforgettable and exhilarating. And it’s what we do.

Welcome to the 2022–2023 season at the Schulich School of Music. On these pages you’ll find all the ways our community will move you with sounds and stories. It’s your invitation to a year of exploration and a promise of time well spent.

We are privileged to provide the highest standard of musical education to the young artists and scholars who pass through our doors. Every teacher at the Schulich School of Music is devoted to being their best as an artist, educator, and mentor. It is through this motivation to excel in research, pedagogy, and performance that we are able to offer the variety of events you see here. You’ll want to save the dates for our Schulich in Concert series to catch our professors front and centre. But it’s not just what the faculty gives, it’s what the students bring. Our students are remarkable. Their desire and drive come alive in every opportunity put before them. They flourish in ensembles large

and small and will astound you in their solo recitals. As they travel through our concert halls, recording studios, classrooms, and labs, they build a repertoire of abilities that encourage their individual excellence.

When you’re deciding which event to attend, we suggest all of them! And if you aren’t able to enjoy a performance in person, tune in to any one of our select student-led webcasts to really get a sense of how devoted everyone is to their craft.

We love seeing our graduates spread the knowledge they’ve gained through their experiences at Schulich out in the world — but it’s also great to welcome them back. Alumni shine throughout our season in the Intermezzo and Musical 5 à 7 series and more.

For a change of pace, take in Research Alive, conferences, and masterclasses to witness the diverse perspectives that will shape what’s next for music. It’s the exchange between our faculty, students, and guests — such as Schulich Distinguished Visiting Chair Daphne Leong — that results in us all building the future of music together.

Another incredible season is here! Everything is waiting to be read, to be played, to be heard. All that’s missing is you. It’s time to pick your concerts and reserve your place.

There is nothing like a concert. bring music to life with us!

What is essential to making music?

The exhilaration of creating music out of thin air and sharing it with others. For me, music is a social activity that enriches the lives of those who are lucky enough to make it and those who are lucky enough to experience it.

Sean Ferguson Dean, Schulich School of Music

Going beyond music. Having a life beyond the practice room and the classroom; trying new things and not being afraid of difficulties.

Ellen Bakulina Associate Professor of Music Theory, BMus’07, MA’10

A fundamental feature in the best music-making spaces is trust: trust between the performers that they will support each other while working together to push the boundaries of their artistic practice.

Megan Batty MA’20, current MMus

Curiosity breeds open-mindedness and a willingness for collaboration, both of which are essential to making and learning music.

Theodora Nestorova Current PhD

Be a human first, then a musician second. We’re just small specks in this vast universe. Lead with compassion, grace, and genuine kindness. And with that, speak through your music.

Solina Lee BMus’21, GDip’22, current MMus

How does music move you?

I believe music is the art that transcends the imperfect nature of our world and allows us to forget for a while our urge and longing for peace.

Elizaveta Miller Assistant Professor of Music Performance in Early Music, Harpsichord

Music moves me particularly by its ability and power to communicate an artistic message in such a direct way, regardless of where we come from.

Jonathan Dagenais Course Lecturer of Instrumental Conducting, Artistic Director Conductor the McGill Wind MMus’10

Music is energy, is rhythm, is constant motion even when there is silence... We just have to listen to it and let the rest do its thing...

Juan Sebastián Delgado MMus’13, DMus’17

20 Schulich School of Music
and
of
Orchestra,

I think music is a language that everyone can communicate and understand, so I feel moved when I can feel that connection.

As a listener, music is the soundtrack of my life, transporting me through different landscapes and moods. As a composer, music offers me an outlet to organize and express my thoughts, emotions, and experiences. As an improviser, music offers me the ability to channel raw emotion into spontaneous creation.

I especially love what music brings up in listeners’ own individual minds, such as associations and memories, and things we have trouble putting into words.

What is your favourite moment in a concert?

I love the moment of expectation just before the performer plays their/her/his first note.

As a performer, I always look forward to that moment when we get in “the zone”. It’s hard to put into words, but it feels like complete self-abandonment in the music. It doesn’t always happen, but when it does, it’s quite special.

Jazz Guitar Instructor, Artistic Director of the McGill Chamber Jazz Ensemble III, BMus’06, MMus’08, current DMus

My favourite moment in a concert is the beginning — the expectation of presenting something for an audience. What will it be? The excitement of not knowing what is ahead.

Lisa Lorenzino Assistant Professor in Music Education, Music Education Area Coordinator

Watching the performer and wondering “how is this possible” or how could anyone compose/improvise this music. Hearing an ‘out of this world’ sound, experiencing catharsis.

Frédéricka Petit-Homme BMus’02, MMus’04, current PhD

When the hall falls totally silent because of the depth of the audience’s involvement in the music – this is the performer’s ultimate reward. For me, it is greater than applause...

Ilya Poletaev Associate Professor of Music Performance, Piano

What do you hope audiences experience at

our concerts?

I hope that the audiences allow themselves some time to get away from other matters of life. I hope that Schulich concerts help audiences “bring down the tempo” a little bit, and that people can put their worries aside, and just immerse themselves in the beautiful music and all the wonderful emotions it’s bound to bring.

Seungwoo Han MMus’22

I hope the audience finds something there that nourishes their souls.

Marianne Trudel Artistic Director of the McGill Jazz Orchestra I, BMus’01

I hope that people will feel like they’re transported elsewhere for a moment in their busy schedules. Lara Deutsch BMus’12, MMus’14

I hope that everyone leaves the concert with at least one morsel of something unfamiliar; a timbre, a lyric, a chord progression, or even a whole new composer.
