Computing

What is a Computer? An introduction to digital devices, hardware, software and operating systems.

Control and Programming - Students develop an understanding of the key concepts of sequence, iteration and selection using Flowol, Logo and Microbits.

English

Twisted Tales over time - Students study the similarities and differences between texts written over different centuries and cultures.

Writing the world - Students will explore and develop their transactional writing skills through the study of animals in articles; travel writing guides; and documentaries.

Geography

Our Local Area - An introduction to Geography and Map skills, followed by exploring the Geography of the local area of Leyland.

Our Island Home - Students to explore the physical and human features of the British Isles, investigating rivers, coasts and capitals.

History

The Riccall Mystery - How do we carry out Historical Enquiries?

Students carry out a mock ‘dig’ and produce a theory of what happened.

Rulers and ruled in Medieval England - Students develop an understanding of power, monarchy and democracy within England.

Modelling - Students are introduced to spreadsheets and use them to calculate the costs, profit and revenue of an event.

English

Introduction to Shakespeare - Students will study the impact and relevance of Shakespeare and develop analytical skills through extract exploration.

Alter ego's fiction - Students will study characters that have alter ego's through literature extracts. They will then use this as inspiration for their own short story opening.

Our Island Home - Students to explore the physical and human features Our European Neighbors - Students to go on a virtual road trip of Europe, exploring of the British Isles, investigating rivers, coasts and capitals. the continents many human and physical features.

History

How did William go from Hastings to control all of England? Students continue with the key theme of power, monarchy and democracy but investigate how England developed after 1066.

Music

Funky Flying Fish - Students will investigate the work of the artist Niki De Saint Phalle. They will design and construct their own fish in the style of the artist with reference to her use of shape and colour.

Students will finally paint their work using their original colourful and interesting designs.

Food Hygiene and Food Safety - Students will explore food hygiene and safety to identify the outcomes of bacterial contamination, including an investigation into cross-contamination. Students will engage in food preparation practicals to demonstrate effective food handling practices.

Introduction to musical instruments, notation and performance Basic keyboard skills, exploring rhythm/pulse, musical structure and African Music (using djembe and other percussion instruments.

Pupils'/teacher's music choice - listening/analysing/playing.

Carousel 2 Expressive Composition - Students will investigate the work of the artist Wassily Kandinsky. They will experiment with the process of expressive mark-making stimulated by emotional responses to work associations and pieces of music.

Students will then go on to create their own abstract painted compositions using the music they listen to everyday.

Food, Nutrition and Health - Students will explore nutrition and health through government initiatives, including The Eatwell Guide and 8 Tips for Healthy Eating.

Students will continue to develop effective food handling practices.
